Across the various continuities, Optimus Prime dies a lot. This happens for various reasons:

* It allows for him to be replaced by a new character (and thus a new toy).
* It allows for him to come back from the dead in a new body (again, a new toy).
* It's dramatic (in theory).
* It makes him into something of a Christ-figure.
* It allows for numerous memorials to be constructed in his honor (though they're some times built even before he dies, morbidly enough).

Nearly every continuity family has featured Prime dying at least once; the only exceptions are the Optimus Primes from Robots in Disguise (though only just), Shattered Glass (since in that case, it's Megatron's job), and Transformers: Prime (if one does not count the loss of his memories in the Season 1 finale ).

Some examples:

Generation 1 cartoon continuity
Generation 1 cartoon
* Orion Pax died (or was at least severely damaged by Megatron) and had to be rebuilt into Optimus Prime by Alpha Trion. It's possible that if Orion had not been repaired, Optimus Prime would have ceased to exist. Pax's girlfriend Ariel was also heavily damaged, and rebuilt into Elita One. They were with their friend Dion when they were attacked by Megatron, although it is unknown if he was likewise rebuilt.

The Transformers: The Movie
* The best-known example is from The Transformers: The Movie, in which Optimus Prime dies of wounds from his battle with Megatron. Famously, his body turns gray as he dies. (Urban legend says his body also crumbles, but no such footage is known to exist.) Being the first time he died, it was actually unexpected.

Kiss Players
*Sometime between 2005 and 2010, Marissa Faireborn revives Optimus using the Galvatron cells in her body. Ultimately, all the cells are put back into Galvatron, and without them, Optimus promptly dies again.

Season 3
* He returns from the dead twice; first as a zombie under Quintesson control in "Dark Awakening" as part of a plan to destroy the Autobots, only to die again when he overcomes the Quintesson control through the power of the Matrix and possibly the strength of his will, and sacrifices himself to save the Autobots.

* He then was brought to life again in "The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 1".

The Headmasters
* In The Headmasters, Prime's death in The Transformers: The Movie was sort-of recreated in a flashback montage at the beginning of "Four Warriors Come out of the Sky", but not really. Rather than die while taking down his ultimate nemesis in a one-on-one struggle to the death to defend his city, his comrades, the planet Earth, and freedom itself, he just kind of gets randomly shot while in the middle of an ordinary battle outside of the Autobot Headquarters, and turns gray. Nobody else seems to notice this. It's not clear that Prime himself notices it. It's about the most half-hearted death ever.

* Optimus Prime later died again—in another act of self sacrifice, of course—when he walked into Vector Sigma and tried to bring it back under control directly in "Birth of the Fantastic Double Prime". His body turned gray as he died, followed by a (likely only symbolic) scene of him telling Rodimus Prime that it would be his responsibility to keep leading the Autobots and to continue his work, seen as a transparent, light-haloed figure against the sky and heard in third person narration as Rodimus stared into the sky. (Then again, given the proven existence of ghosts...)

Return of Convoy
*The Battlestars managed to restore Optimus's life with the power of the Zodiac, evolving him into Star Convoy in The Battlestars.

Generation 2
* In the Japanese version of Generation 2, Optimus Prime was badly wounded by Megatron's fusion cannon and almost died, but was resurrected and evolved yet again, this time into Laser Rod Optimus Prime, by the power of the Reconfiguration Matrix. G-2 (pack-in manga)

Marvel Comics continuity
Generation 1
*In "Afterdeath!", Prime, after failing to live up to his moral principles while playing a video game, volunteers to be killed. The Autobots launch his funeral bier into space. Fortunately, the creator of the video game, Ethan Zachary, saves a backup copy of Prime's mind on a floppy disk. We first meet this virtual Prime sixteen issues later in "Pretender to the Throne!". He gets his new Powermaster body two issues thereafter, in "People Power!".

*A previous attempt was made at making virtual Prime a new body in "Totaled!". The body spontaneously blew up.

*About thirty issues later, Prime sacrifices himself to defeat Unicron, in "On the Edge of Extinction!". But he didn't actually die until "Still Life!". However, his Powermaster partner, Hi-Q, survives, and almost immediately begins babbling about how he's really Optimus Prime. This turns out to be true, and the Last Autobot metamorphoses Hi-Q into Prime (with a new Action Master body) in the last issue of the original Marvel US series.

Generation 2
*This Prime wasn't done dying yet. His adventures continued in the G2 comics, and he died defeating the Swarm in the final issue of that series, "A Rage in Heaven!". The Swarm reconstituted him three pages later (in a body based on his then-current Hero toy).

IDW Comics continuity
*In his first battle with the Ore-13 powered Megatron, Optimus was killed. Escalation issue 5 Or at least, his main body was: by quickly downloading his consciousness into Combat Deck (and then back again), Optimus was able to survive. Being that close to death meant he briefly existed in a limbo state, which got him noticed by Nova Prime in the Dead Universe. Escalation issue 6

*He then spends the first half of All Hail Megatron badly damaged and near death. He is revived however when Kup and his crew arrive.

*A rare metaphorical version occurs when he leaves Cybertron to appease the anti-Autobot NAILs. With no duties or lives to mind but his own, he claims that Optimus Prime is dead, but Orion Pax has been reborn. The Death of Optimus Prime

Beast Wars cartoon continuity
Beast Wars cartoon
In Beast Wars and Beast Machines, you could mark the end of a season by the near-death experience of one Optimus or another...

*At the end of the first season of Beast Wars, Optimus Primal piloted a bomb-equipped stasis pod in an attempt to destroy the Planet Buster. Unfortunately, Megatron had sealed the pod's hatch, and Optimus blew up with it. Early in the second season (a few hours later as far as the characters were concerned), Rhinox managed to unite Optimus's drifting spark with a blank protoform, thus bringing him back to life (and in a new Transmetal body, too).

*At the end of second season, the Beast Wars Megatron came very close to killing the original Optimus Prime. But Prime didn't quite die, so we really shouldn't count it.

Beast Machines cartoon
*At the end of the first season of Beast Machines, Optimus and Megatron had a cataclysmic battle, using the energies of Vector Sigma and the Plasma Energy Chamber. This would have destroyed Cybertron, but Optimus took the warring energies into himself and disintegrated. However, his spark was trapped within the Oracle, and the other Maximals convinced him to return to the real world at the start of second season. The Oracle kindly gave him a new body (which, believe it or not, was not a new toy).

*At the end of the series, Optimus gave his life to defeat Megatron once and for all, pushing him into the technorganic core of the planet. In assorted ancillary media (convention comics, text stories), he comes back to life yet again.

(Strangely, the end of the third season of Beast Wars had no Optimus deaths whatsoever! A half-dozen others died, but not Optimus.)
He's one of the only Primes that didn't die! However, it came very close in the final battle, when he planned to sacrifice himself to stop Galvatron.

* In the Armada episode "Crisis", Optimus Prime used his body to block the blast of Megatron's Hydra Cannon, protecting the Earth. When the cannon's energy is spent, we see Optimus turn grayish-white, then actually crumble to bits. A bunch of Mini-Cons use the Matrix to resurrect him three episodes later.
Yep, practically all we know about this Optimus is that he died. He doesn't turn gray, but his colors are faded.

* The corpse of an Optimus Prime (killed by Megazarak) from an alternate universe was cloned by Unicron to create Nemesis Prime. The clone, before he became Nemesis, appeared in Cybertron comic issue "Balancing Act, Part 2". Perhaps the most brutal Prime death to date. To protect Sam Witwicky, Optimus Prime engaged in a brutal battle with Starscream, Megatron and Grindor. Despite literally disarming Starscream and destroying Grindor, Optimus is run-through from behind by Megatron and killed. While dead, Optimus' body is depicted with faded colours in reference to his history of turning grey upon death. This event causes Sam to follow the symbols the AllSpark sliver placed in his mind to find the ancient Matrix of Leadership, the only thing that could restore life to Optimus. Unfortunately, it crumbled into dust upon touching it in the Tomb of the Primes on the border between Egypt and Jordan. During the climactic battle in Egypt between NEST and the Decepticons, Sam was seemingly killed by Megatron, only to be taken to another plane of existence where he met the Primes who died to prevent The Fallen from achieving victory, and they bestowed upon him the true Matrix, which allowed Sam to revive Optimus. Revenge of the Fallen (film)

Synopsis
A confused and disoriented Optimus Prime awakens on what seems to be Cybertron, though the planet is now convulsing with primordial energies and is missing some of its characteristic features. He assumes he has somehow been transported into the distant past, but spotting the wreckage of Galvatron's Sweeps reveals that something even stranger is afoot. Prime soon discovers that Iacon still exists, though it is now populated by Cybertronians whom he does not recognize and who mostly seem equally ignorant of himself. One of them, however--Noddy--certainly recognizes Optimus and berates him for Cybertron's sorry state. The situation is defused when Sideswipe and Whirl arrive, intimidating Noddy and introducing Optimus to the newly-adopted acronym "NAIL" - Non-Aligned Indigenous Lifeforms, the multitudes of Cybertronians who evacuated their planet in the early stages of the civil war rather than picking and fighting for a side. Optimus was then reunited with Hot Rod and Bumblebee, who described the relative ease with which they captured the disoriented, post-Deceptigod Decepticons. They also expressed both their awe at the never-ending hordes of NAILs now returning to a pacified Cybertron and their tension at the situation, since they realize the NAILs perceive the Autobots to be nothing but symbols of the war they hate so much. That's certainly how Metalhawk feels--though the harshness of his contempt for the Autobots is certainly matched by Optimus' own declarations that Metalhawk was a coward who abandoned his own race in its time of greatest need. Some of the Autobots recommend that Optimus demonstrate the power of the Matrix in order to convince the NAILs of the justness of their cause, but this is clearly impossible as the Matrix is totally depleted.

Optimus visited with the captive Decepticons, now imprisoned within the gun chamber of the crashed Kimia station. Ratbat tries to impress Optimus with his own record of Senatorial service, but Optimus tersely cuts him off by noting that regardless of his pre-war history, he is now just as much a criminal as the rest of his faction.

Day by day, the standoff with the NAILs grows ever more tense; for all his own dislike of the Autobots, Metalhawk is forced to play peacemaker when other NAILs such as Zetca begin to openly rally for violence against them. Perceptor and Rewind finish their examination of the empty halves of the Matrix shell, and determine that it is actually an ancient cosmic map that leads to.... something. Drift immediately declares that it must be pointing out the location of the Knights of Cybertron, whose awesome power could surely help unite all Cybertronians and restore stability to the planet. The fact that these Knights are widely believed to be mythical does not dissuade him, and he gradually manages to convince some other Autobots of the necessity of undertaking such a quest. Prowl is outraged at the thought of leaving Cybertron in control of the NAILs, whom he considers to be lazy and opportunistic ingrates - though Metalhawk retorts that Prowl is only bitter because he had tried and failed to remain unaligned during the war. Suddenly, the crowd of NAILs outside attacks the Autobot base. Though disorganized, they could present a threat - emphasis on "could," as Prowl fixates on the potential of Autobot lives being at risk as being sufficient justification for releasing the captive Decepticons to beat back the crowds. Ratbat pleads with the other Decepticons not to obey Autobot orders and, instead, to attack their old enemies then and there; Starscream countermands that order, pointing out that they would easily be destroyed by an Autobot / NAIL teamup. With their transformation capabilities and heaviest weapons disabled, the Decepticons use sheer brute force to push back the NAILs, and thereafter are held in line by Prowl's warning that they have each been fitted with remote-controlled detonator chips.

In despair, Optimus addresses the entire populace of Cybertron. Though he means only the best for all of them, he grudgingly admits that in a way he himself has become just another aspect of endless war, and that he is willing to leave Cybertron forever in the hopes that its society will be able to restructure itself peacefully without him. As Optimus prepares for his departure, Hot Rod and Bumblebee continue to disagree over the wisdom of manning an expedition to seek out the Knights of Cybertron - and in the end decide to split their forces, with some Autobots going on the quest and others remaining behind to try to rebuild. Optimus Prime's last act among his old cohorts is to leave the empty halves of the Matrix shell in their hands.

On his lonely flight away from Cybertron, destined for parts unknown, the former leader of the Autobots reflects on how, for the first time in eons, he is no longer responsible for the life and death of any other person - let alone millions of people and entire planets. At last, he feels free. Optimus Prime is dead; Orion Pax has been reborn.
Notes
*This issue was originally advertised as "issue #125", but was instead sold as a standalone one-shot with a banner that simply identified it as a "celebration" of 125 issues. This count includes all of IDW's different Generation 1 universe series, mini-series and one-shots, with the exception of crossover projects Infestation and New Avengers/Transformers.
* The generic Nail who accosts Optimus Prime at the start of the issue, and who is seen again during the battle, is based on the famous British children's book character Noddy, sporting his conical blue "hat" topped in a bell, red torso, blue "shorts" and coloured cheeks. Moreover, his visible alternate mode components, including a chest grill and large red wheel wells on his shoulders, indicate that he transforms into Noddy's car, itself one of the most well-known aspects of the character. He also shares the same character model (with the exception of his head) as Dipstick.
* Sideswipe is now sporting a body based on the 2010 "customizing class" toy: his 2008 Universe body in his Generation 2 colors. He's also wearing the bandolier he wore in the Generation 2 comics.
* A generic Nail on page 16 has a striking resemblance to that of movie Barricade. A mostly black body with a partially bronze face as well as red and blue siren lights. This generic is seen being held by Ironhide in a sort of Full Nelson. On the IDW boards, Josh Burcham confirmed that while the character wasn't specified to be Barricade in the script, he looked so much like him that he used Barricade's colors.
* This is the first fiction Zetca's ever gotten. Though, as a Masterforce Warrior, he should technically be a human...
Quoting the article:

"Grimlock took his name by forming a portmanteau out of a sentence spoken by Megatron: "My prospects are grim, locked in this prison of a lab." Who knew he had it in him? In fact, he's the only Dinobot shown to have a name in the cartoon at all."
Seriously, is there any reason this wiki should discuss minute changes from prototype to production mold such as this? It's not even an officially released toy yet. :Galvatron II is a Decepticon from an alternate future of the Generation 1 continuity family.

When Megatron was defeated, betrayed, and cast helplessly adrift in deep space, Unicron reshaped his remains into Galvatron. In one possible timeline, the Chaos-Bringer succeeded in consuming Cybertron and granted his faithful herald freedom and the rule of Earth. But Galvatron has found, to his great chagrin, that his servitude would not end there. Unicron reached through time itself and plucked his creation away from his triumphant reward, forcing him to repeat his old mission. Rebellious and scheming, his mind slowly being eaten by madness, this "Galvatron II" is a rogue danger to all.

Fiction
Marvel Comics continuity
In the year 2005, Megatron fell in battle against an Optimus Prime and was cast into space by Starscream. His mind still functioned, but barely. Wracked by madness, he welcomed oblivion, but that relief was denied him by Unicron. Desiring a flawless servant, Unicron re-created Megatron into the cold and clinical Galvatron. But the remnants of Megatron's insanity remained, eating away at Galvatron's precision. A Savage Circle

This did not prevent Unicron from achieving his goal, however. Cybertron was destroyed, and Unicron freed Galvatron to do with Earth as he pleased. By the year 2009, the Decepticons had conquered the Americas, but Galvatron's madness had grown. One benign symptom was a tendency to give impromptu speeches about himself in the third person. And more alarmingly, he once rescued Cyclonus from an Autobot attack and then immediately destroyed him for having needed to be rescued at all. He also continued to "kill" a long-dead Rodimus Prime, whose remains he'd strung up on what was left of the World Trade Center. He knew that the humans' European Crisis Coalition was planning a nuclear strike, but he was glad for it, believing the Decepticons' force-field could absorb the energy of the attack. Some other Decepticons were not so confident.

On the eve of the nuclear launch, a small team of Autobots and humans struck at the Decepticon Powerbase (East Coast) in New York, hoping to send a message to the world that there was still an active resistance movement in North America. The battle took its toll in casualties, but the plan succeeded as Spike Witwicky unfurled an American flag atop a Decepticon tower, causing the Crisis Coalition to call off the strike with just a few minutes remaining. Galvatron took aim at Spike, but Hook, Line, and Sinker suddenly materialized and subdued Galvatron, then whisked him away. Rhythms of Darkness! They took him back to their own time, the year 1990. There, Unicron was planning an imminent attack on Cybertron, and, as per his modus operandi, he wanted a herald. However, in an unusual move, he had decided to pluck one from a "possible future". Galvatron was understandably angry at being forced back into servitude, but he acquiesced when reminded of Unicron's capacity to torture him. Eye of the Storm

Unicron sent Galvatron to attack Cybertron, and there Galvatron soon began to work against him. He followed Emirate Xaaron beneath Cybertron's surface, believing the Autobot knew a way to defeat Unicron. Surrender! He ambushed Xaaron and explained his situation, then braced for Unicron's torture. When the pain did not come, Galvatron took it as proof that being inside the body of Primus made him invisible to the Chaos-Bringer. Xaaron told him the legend that all the Transformers, united together, could defeat Unicron even without the Matrix of Leadership. ...All This and Civil War 2 Galvatron decided the only way to achieve that would be to awaken Primus, so he and Xaaron went to the chamber deep within the planet where Primus' head rested. Meanwhile, Unicron, indeed blind to Galvatron's whereabouts, sent Hook, Line, and Sinker to find him and bring him back. The trio tracked him to the chamber, where Xaaron was attempting to contact Primus psychically. Galvatron immediately attacked Unicron's servants, destroying two of them before Hook gained the upper hand (so to speak). But Hook spontaneously combusted as Primus entered Xaaron's body. Galvatron beseeched Primus to gather the Transformers before Unicron arrived, and Primus, seeing that his supplicant was a Decepticon, believed that the time was right for unity. He teleported the Earthbound Transformers to Cybertron, and Galvatron reveled in his own ability to "con" a god. Out of Time!

As the Transformers prepared for the impending apocalypse, Galvatron secretly helped fight some Unicron cultists who tried to assassinate Optimus Prime. The Void! (US) But despite his covert assistance, the Transformers still scattered helplessly when Unicron arrived. Realizing that he needed to make a public appearance to set an example, Galvatron powered himself up with energy from Cybertron itself, then attacked Unicron with a single, mighty blast. Unicron swatted him aside, and he would not be seen again for the course of the battle. But he had succeeded in inspiring the other Transformers to unite against their planet-eating enemy. On the Edge of Extinction!

During the battle, the Ark arrived with Autobot reinforcements, but it was abandoned by the time Unicron was destroyed. Starscream and Shockwave commandeered it to conquer the newly-undefended Earth, and Galvatron was inspired to stow away, with the goal of eventually re-creating his own lost Terran empire. However, none of them were aware that Megatron was in a stasis tube in the ship's medical facility, and that he had been mistakenly re-energized with Nucleon. Galvatron encountered the disoriented Megatron wandering down a hallway, and all of Galvatron's repressed insanity erupted. Exodus!

Galvatron very nearly destroyed Megatron, fueled by a desire to excise the madness from his own mind, but he stopped himself for fear of disrupting his own history. He believed that the timeline he was in was not the one that would one day produce him, but he still didn't want to take any chances. Megatron, his own mind a chaotic mix with Ratchet's, was barely aware of anything that was happening to him. He was helpless when Shockwave saw him and attacked him, but Galvatron saved him by smashing Shockwave's head against a wall. Galvatron offered a truce to Megatron in the hopes that working with his past self would help him come to grips with the source of his madness. Megatron accepted, but their alliance was cut short when the Ark crashed on Earth again. A Savage Circle

Venturing out of the wreckage into the wilderness of northern Canada, Galvatron was set upon by the Canadian army. He did away with them easily, but he was soon confronted by another human, one whom he had almost vaporized in his own time: Spike Witwicky. This younger Spike had been drawn to the area by his Headmaster partner, Fortress Maximus, who was inside the Ark. Rejoined, the human/Autobot duo attacked Galvatron as he began to threaten a town. Galvatron, his madness utterly consuming him, fought Maximus with a feral rage, but Maximus defeated him and threw him into a frozen lake. The Last Autobot?

Earthforce
Seeking Autobots that he could mould into a new army, Galvatron sent a "mind bug" probe aboard the abandoned Ark to scan the minds of the comatose Autobots held in stasis there in order to find suitable candidates. He was taken with Prowl's willingness to fight fire with fire, Ironhide's ability to kill when required, Sunstreaker's lack of concern for humans, Wheeljack's willingness to put the needs of the many ahead of the few and Silverbolt's ferocity.

But as he studied their dreams aboard his ship and played back scenarios in which these traits had come to the fore, his mind bug suddenly ceased transmitting. Little did Galvatron realize that the device had inadvertently awoken the five sleeping Autobots and when he headed across to the Ark to investigate, he was confronted by the quintet.

During the battle that followed, he planted mind-controlling devices on Wheeljack and Prowl, designed to bring out the mental flaws in them that he had observed and shape them into a form he could use. Being Autobots, however, they proved to be much better beings than Galvatron had given them credit for, easily overcoming his control and turning their weapons on him. Downed by the blast, Galvatron was immediately leapt upon by Prowl, who planted a device hastily constructed by Wheeljack on his head, plunging the Decepticon in a "sleep" mode of his own. Placed in a stasis capsule, Galvatron slumbered... trapped in a recurring nightmare by the Autobots, in which Rodimus Prime dismembered him over and over again. Perchance to Dream
Mostly the Decepticons simply cowered before his might, their fear preventing them from even thinking about following anyone else. ==Notes==
*The "Galvatron II" name originates from "Alignment", a non-official story written by Simon Furman, where it was used as a way to distinguish the two different Galvatrons that emerged in Marvel UK continuity. It was made official years later with the release of the e-Hobby "Galvatron II" toy.

*Galvatron II's end in the Marvel comic is unintentionally similar to Galvatron's final fate in "The Emperor of Destruction Vanishes on an Iceberg" from the Headmasters anime.

* We know it's Galvatron II in "...Perchance to Dream" because Transformers: Dinobot Hunt says so.

*Which Galvatron was more impressive? After the movie, "Galvatron I" went on in the UK comic to be shot by just about every Transformer you can name, buried in a volcano, soundly beaten by Ultra Magnus on more than one occasion, then half-decapitated before finally being destroyed by a rift in space and time. The cartoon timeline was kinder to him, but he still blew up two planets and drove another one insane. On the other hand, Galvatron II helped Unicron win, then killed Rodimus Prime and conquered the Americas, successfully lied to Primus (who, as a god, can be expected to know everything), used that lie to set the entire Transformer race against Unicron (whom he then shot in the face), got a divine bitchslap in return, bounced through a building and across Cybertron's surface but survived without a scratch, then was the only one to walk away from the Ark's second crash on Earth.

*The human child Makoto can be seen brandishing a Galvatron-themed wrist-communicator in "Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers issue 7", a story which takes place before Galvatron's creation. Later retcons make it possible that the device is designed after Galvatron II, who had dimension-hopped into the Japanese continuity around that time. Considering the nature of wrist-communicators, devices which allow the user to contact and summon the Transformer they're shaped after, that would mean that a small Japanese boy had the power to command the most batshit insane Transformer in history. Hmmmm.
His plans crumbling, Megatron takes a final stab at winning the Beast Wars and changing history.

Synopsis
With Ravage and his transwarp cruiser backing them up, the Predacons unleash a full assault on the Maximal base. Rattrap changes to beast mode and jumps onto the back of the transwarp cruiser, where he begins cutting into the ship's hull. On the battlefield, Optimus and Cheetor are pinned down by the Predacons' firepower, but the autoguns manage to knock Quickstrike from his perch atop Rampage and a short time later the larger Predacon runs him over.

It's not long before Ravage and Rampage bring down the base's shield, and Rhinox emerges to fire on Rampage. Ravage has Tarantulas transfer all the cruiser's power into one enormous missile. Before it can fire, Rattrap bursts into the ship's weapons hold and tosses a pair of fusion grenades that adhere to Tarantulas's hands. The bombs obliterate Tarantulas, the ship's interior, and Ravage—who faces the onrushing fireball with a stoic cry of "Decepticons forever!" The cruiser falls out of the sky, coming to rest mere feet from Rampage—who is then blasted by the still-armed missile.

With the cruiser destroyed and his minions out of commission, Megatron flees. Optimus notes that he's not headed back to base, realizes where he's probably going, and orders the Maximals to pursue.

Meanwhile, Blackarachnia and Silverbolt make their way into the caves of the volcano, uncovering the object of Blackarachnia's quest—the Ark. Blackarachnia explains to Silverbolt that the ship was launched long ago, containing the Autobots' "finest heroes", and was shot down by Decepticons. The ship has members of both factions stored inside, who will awaken in the distant future to re-start the Great War. Blackarachnia is concerned only with the power it possesses—but Megatron arrives just then, blasting Silverbolt offline and sealing the entrance to the caves behind him.

The Maximals arrive hot on his heels, find the sealed entrance, and start digging their way in. Inside, Megatron threatens to vaporize Silverbolt, convincing Blackarachnia to use the access codes to gain access to the Ark (though she vehemently maintains it's only so they'll have some cover in the face of the imminent Maximal attack). The Maximals burst through in time to see the two Predacons sealing the Ark behind them.

Blackarachnia activates the ship's defenses to hold off the Maximals, while Megatron goes to "effect a more permanent solution." Entering the main bridge of the ship, he hovers among the fallen Autobots and Decepticons, eulogizing the Decepticons and cursing the Autobots, until he comes face to face with his intended target—Optimus Prime, the original leader of the Autobots, who kept the Decepticons from victory (and therefore left their Predacon descendants in a subservient position to the dominant Maximals). Though the risk is incredible, Megatron decides to carry out his namesake's instructions, charges his main weapon, and prepares to fire.

In the caves, the Maximals are pelted by fire from the ship's cannon, until Rattrap manages to force a backblast that deactivates the cannon and shields. Rhinox struggles to open the mighty doors of the Ark. But the Maximals are too late—Megatron unleashes a full-power blast at Optimus Prime's head, destroying it.

A time storm immediately wells up, spreading outward from the Ark and into space. The Maximals find themselves phasing in and out of past bodies—as well as out of existence—as Megatron emerges from the Ark, triumphant.
Unwilling though I was to follow my namesake's instructions, it has all come down to this: the ultimate risk, for the ultimate prize. ==Notes==
Animation and technical errors
* During the opening battle scene, Optimus Primal takes several shots to the chest, leaving it blackened and dented. In the shot of the Maximals watching Ravage's ship explode, his chest is undamaged-and then it goes back to damaged as he talks about why Ravage betrayed them.
* After Ravage's ship goes down and the Maximals decide to chase after Megatron, Optimus transforms to flight mode. His front, back, and upper torso are all messed up, to the point that he has to spin around a few times after transforming. (While this is happening, the scene mostly switches to Rattrap climbing on Cheetor.) Optimus is normal again when he tells Rhinox to "Get on."
* In the first close-up of Megatron's face in the volcano (after he shoots Silverbolt and Blackarachnia), his face is very dark-almost black.
* After Megatron blasts the entrance shut and the Maximals get off and find it covered, for a split second, the colors on Rattrap's wheels (on his back) and his rat legs are reversed.

Continuity errors
* This episode called into sudden question the location of the Maximal and Predacon bases. The events of "Code of Hero" seem to place the series firmly somewhere in Africa, where early Humanity evolved; the templates for the Maximals' beast modes (gorillas, cheetahs, rhinos) would seem to back this up. However, the Ark is traditionally seen to have crashed in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. If this is the case, the Maximals pursued Megatron across the Atlantic Ocean and over an entire continent! Even if the Ark touched down in Africa in this continuity, in "Possession", Starscream's spark is clearly shown landing in the southwest United States. Also, the early humans still appear after any theoretical "crossing of the Atlantic" took place.
** In an early script of the Nemesis Part 2 the Maximals would launch not the Autobot shuttle, but the Ark itself. This variation would perhaps provide some sort of explanation to the mystery, as the Ark might, for example, end up in North America after fight with the Nemesis.
* Either way, it doesn't make much sense that the Maximals make no attempt to shoot down Megatron while he's still on the run, rather than waiting till he reaches his destination. In his defense, Optimus may have thought that they were at a disadvantage during the chase: Only Rattrap is in any position to attack (Optimus and Cheetor being in flight mode and Rhinox probably having enough problems balancing on Optimus's hoverboard), and Megatron would be hard to hit (he's pretty far away, and not presenting much of a target from Rattrap's position). Of course, that still doesn't explain why Optimus doesn't just let Cheetor and Rattrap fly ahead and get a better shot—after all, a later episode would prove that the espionage expert has pretty good aim even when hitching a flight.
* Blackarachnia claims that the Great War started in 1984, when Mount St. Hilary erupted. In both the Marvel comics and the cartoon, the war had started long before the Ark even crashed and gone on without interruption. At best, the reawakening of the Ark and Nemesis crews intensified the conflict.
* Ravage was in his cassette mode in the ship at the end of last episode, but is piloting it from the cockpit in this one. Given the nature of the former mode as essentially fanservice, this may not be terribly surprising.

*In reference to the strength of the Ark, Rattrap claims, "That ship wasn't built, it was poured!" Primal replies "Die-cast construction. It's a lost art," in homage to the original Transformer toys, which featured some die-cast parts.
*We get to see the Ark launch from Cybertron, along with a brief glimpse of Optimus Prime, Prowl, Jazz, Ratchet and Ironhide moving about, as well as a glimpse of the Nemesis attacking the Ark.
*The final act features a bonanza of cameo appearances by the original Generation 1 Transformers, including Prowl, Optimus Prime, Megatron, Ironhide, Thundercracker, Soundwave, and Starscream.

Real-world references
* Rattrap refers to his vehicle mode as Knievel mode, a reference to Evel Knievel.
* When Rattrap's torch goes out and he has to break through the ship with his beast mode's teeth, he calls himself the Stainless Steel Rat.
* During the short fight between Rhinox and Rampage, Rhinox dives through the air firing his guns in a homage to The Killer.
* As Rattrap rides the missile connected with Ravage's ship, he lets out a cowboy yell. This is an homage to Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.
Trivia
*Despite every other multi-part episode in Beast Wars using Arabic numerals in its title (including the first two parts of "The Agenda"), this episode opts for the Roman numeral for whatever reason.
* Megatron, to no one's surprise, is perfectly willing to sacrifice most of his team to defeat the Maximals. Blackarachnia, Inferno, Quickstrike, and Rampage were all originally Maximal protoforms (or, in Rampage's case, the product of Maximal science). If his plan to destroy the Autobots and Maximals retroactively had worked, he would have been left with a team consisting of Waspinator and Tarantulas. (Tarantulas's precise origins are unclear, but he's definitely not a descendant of the Autobots.)
*In any event, Megatron's plan would seem to be temporally problematic, since such a drastic change could've wiped out the Predacons (and himself) just as easily as the Maximals. Small wonder he "was reluctant to follow my namesake's instructions" and regards it as "the ultimate risk". Megatron's ending in the Beast Wars Transmetals video game further elaborates on this, stating that with Optimus Prime dead, there would be no Matrix, and, as such, nothing to stop Unicron from destroying Cybertron, an act that would wipe out Autobots and Decepticons.
*Apparently, Rhinox is afraid of heights. While sitting on Primal's hoverboard, he looks straight ahead, occasionally looking down and immediately snapping straight up with what looks like pure horror on his face.
*This episode finally reveals why Optimus has been so worried about Megatron's activities for the past few episodes; he's afraid that Megatron will use the information on the Golden Disk to find the Ark and alter history. Presumably, this is the matter of "great importance" Dinobot wished to speak with Optimus about at the end of "Maximal, No More".
*This episode marks the commencement of an ongoing error, whereby Teletraan I is frequently pronounced "Teletron 1". The issue is resolved with extreme subtlety in "Nemesis Part 2".
*The word "suckers" is written on the giant missile in Cybertronix.
*Bob Forward had originally intended to make Rattrap chew all the way through Ravage's ship in beast mode, rather than using a laser cutter first. In a sly remark on Madman's commentary of the episode, he states "My version would have been cheaper!"
*Megatron stating that "YOU NO LONGER EXIST!!!" could have also been referring to the viewer, given the fact that the show takes place on prehistoric Earth, with prehistoric humans, and the backlash of Prime's death may as well have affected the humans too.

decepticon
:Smokejumper is a Decepticon from the Armada and Universe series. His toy, however, was released under the Robots in Disguise banner.

An intelligence analyst, Smokejumper has a meticulous eye for detail. He is so single-minded, he's unable to think outside of his current mission objective. His partner Dreadwind calls him a geek. Even his fellow Decepticons find him frustrating to relate to. Relatively unarmed and unpopular, he relies on Dreadwind to watch his back when he's wrapped up in his work.

Smokejumper and Dreadwind can combine in the form of Dreadwing,
where Smokejumper's eye for detail and Dreadwind's lust for destruction join to create a dangerous force to reckon with. Depending on continuity, they may also be able to combine with their leader.

Fiction
Universe
Armada
Smokejumper and Dreadwind allied themselves with Galvatron during the Unicron Battles, using the Spark of Combination to form the mighty MegaWing Galvatron. In this form, they are powerful enough to challenge Jet Convoy. When they further combine with Tidal Wave to form Dark MegaWing Galvatron, is there any force which can stop them?

His jet mode fits in the back end of his partner Dreadwind's jet mode as well, forming a complete "flying wing" stealth bomber jet called Dreadwing. His twin spring-loaded missile launchers fit into slots on his legs, putting them under his wings in jet mode.

:Thanks to a screwhole which was new to this version of Dreadwind's mold, Dreadwind and Smokejumper can combine with Armada Galvatron (or any redeco of that mold) to form "MegaWing Galvatron". Instructions for this bizarre, but official mode appeared in the only issue of 3H's Official Transformers Collectors' Club Magazine. The instructions also included a note to check online for "Dark MegaWing Galvatron" directions, combining the whole schebang with Tidal Wave. Due to the disintegration of 3H, this never materialized.

: This set was released in Japan as a ToysЯUs-exclusive "USA Edition".

: The same mold is used by Beast Wars II Starscream and Robot Masters Smokesniper. It was going to be used in Generation 2 as a new form of the original Starscream, but that toy was ultimately canceled.

Notes
* The Dreadwind & Smokejumper set is unusual for having included a peel-and-apply decal sheet: apart from reissues, this was the only use of this feature since the end of Generation 2.
Dreadwind
:Dreadwind is a Decepticon from the Armada and Universe series. His toy, however, was released under the Robots in Disguise banner.

Dreadwind is something of a perfectionist, and will not choose a second target until he is absolutely sure he has finished the first. He is always searching for increasingly interesting and hard-to-find objects to destroy. His obsession in finding targets worthy of his attentions is near pathological, much like a collector of rare items. Unfortunately, what Dreadwind finds interesting to destroy is often at odds with his mission objective. Even worse, if he's forced to stop firing upon a target before he thinks he's finished, he will become madly enraged and fire on Autobot and Decepticon alike.

Dreadwind and his partner Smokejumper can combine to form the superjet Dreadwing, in which form Dreadwind's lust for destruction and Smokejumper's eye for detail join to create a dangerous force to reckon with. Depending on continuity, they may also be able to combine with their leader.

Fiction
Universe
Armada
Dreadwind and Smokejumper allied themselves with Galvatron during the Unicron Battles, using the Spark of Combination to form the mighty MegaWing Galvatron. In this form, they are powerful enough to challenge Jet Convoy. When they further combine with Tidal Wave to form Dark MegaWing Galvatron, is there any force which can stop them?

{{note|Dreadwind and Smokejumper had apparently been slated to make a cameo in the an issue of the Dreamwave Armada comics, but were replaced at Hasbro's insistence by Skywarp and Sideways.
He can also transform into a treaded "tank" mode. In jet form, he can combine with Smokejumper's jet mode to make a complete aircraft, Dreadwing. Dreadwind and Smokejumper are notable for being the only toys in a U.S. main line to include decal sheets, that must be peeled and applied by their purchaser, since the end of Machine Wars.
