[[Rufus Madison|General Rufus "Mad Dog" Madison]] storms out of the [[United States Capitol]] building, complaining loudly about how they're shutting down his top grade experimental weapon department. As he's asked to leave, he meets [[Leech|Colonel Leech]] who has news that one of their spies in the [[Pentagon]] has uncovered what appears to be a rival department based in [[Jasper]], [[Nevada]] which has built its own [[robotic battle suit]]s. Madison comes to the conclusion that the rival department has stolen his department's weapon plans.

In [[Autobot Outpost Omega One]], [[Jack Darby|Jack]] is demonstrating the practice of bobbing for apples, which [[Bulkhead (Prime)|Bulkhead]] duplicates by bobbing for engine blocks. Their fun is interrupted by a call from [[William Fowler|Agent Fowler]] who passes on a report that hard-line environmentalists have taken over the [[Deep Driller]] oil platform. Obligingly, [[Optimus Prime (Prime)|Optimus Prime]] leads a team through the [[GroundBridge]] only for them to find that the rig is deserted, except for Mad Dog and several others in robotic walkers. While it's clear to the Autobots that the general has made a mistake, Mad Dog isn't interested in listening to them and opens fire.

While [[Bumblebee (Prime)|Bumblebee]] finds a helicopter isn't adequate cover, Optimus contacts base to consult an amused [[Ratchet (Prime)|Ratchet]] who suggests they use the walkers' lack of speed against them. [[Arcee (Prime)|Arcee]] tricks a couple of the soldiers into shooting each other, while Bumblebee gets a couple of others to bring a crane down on their own heads. Mad Dog and Leech are still spoiling to fight, but Jack has a suggestion for Optimus.

Moments later, Optimus surrenders and asks Mad Dog to help him out of his "battle suit". Madison is happy to oblige until he realises that Optimus is an autonomous robot and not a human in a mech suit at all. Once the storm passes, the military arrives and General Madison is strapped to a trolly and taken away.

When [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] returned from his disappearance at the beginning of the rebirth of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], Tappet angrily confronted "Orion Pax", berating him for the [[Great War (G1)|war]] that lasted the last four million years. He was soon set upon by [[Whirl (G1)|Whirl]] and [[Sideswipe (G1)|Sideswipe]], but Optimus diffused the situation. Later, when a NAIL riot began against the Autobots, the [[Decepticon]]s were released to help with crowd control, and Tappet was attacked by [[Blitzwing (G1)|Blitzwing]]. Tappet still did not care for the Autobot government, taking to graffiti to express his displeasure. The Decepticons [[Needlenose]] and [[Horri-Bull]], acting as "enforcers", caught the NAIL in the act. A group of Autobots soon noticed the two beating up Tappet and diffused the situation before it could escalate further. Nevertheless, Tappet was arrested for vandalism. This attracted the attention of the NAILs, a large number of non-combatant Cybertronians, and drew them back to the planet for the first time in eons. They were expecting to find Cybertron a paradise; instead it was a twisting, primordial wreck, and they were not happy. They demanded that the Autobots leave the planet to them, as penance for ruining it with "their" war.

A riot ensued, with the Autobots reluctantly using their [[Decepticon]] prisoners as additional crowd control. Though they forbid war in any form, they do train and spar with each other using bladed weapons. In addition to ordinary swords, each warrior carries a [[Great Sword]] which is powered by its bearer's very [[spark]].

During the Great War, the [[Transformer]] civilization was split in half on their homeworld of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] as many chose to either side with the Autobots or the Decepticons. Those that did not choose a side had little hope of surviving as carnage engulfed the world in a conflict the likes of which had never been previously seen. It was during this time that the members that made up the Circle of Light gathered in order to contemplate the future. They considered themselves to be the guardians of Cybertron's ancient culture. They preached against the creation of factions and its members believed that the Great War was the result of overwhelming corruption in their nation which led to the civil war. Many that came to the Circle of Light were scholars and scientists though there were some who were simply fleeing for their lives as they did not want to take part in an ideological battle. Thus, they decided to abandon their homeworld during the fighting and headed off into space in order to find a place where they could live in peace. Initially, they managed to settle but as the war expanded to other worlds and systems; the Cybertronians that made up the Circle of Light decided that they needed to find a new hiding spot. Ultimately, they found one on a distant world where they hid their civilization underground and away from prying eyes.

Thus, they rescued thousands in an attempt at preserving what they believed was the true Cybertronian way of life. Underground, they built a new [[Crystal City]], a great city where they lived a utopian lifestyle with no sickness, poverty or a government that left its citizens lost within the cracks of society. To ensure their survival, a set of laws were formed where the Circle did not involve themselves in the affairs of outsiders or even allowed foreigners to enter the city. This was part of a single minded objective of their own survival and the preservation of the lifestyle they had managed to forge in hiding. {{storylink|Drift issue 2|Drift #2}}

The Circle served as the inspiration for [[Metalhawk]] and his cadre in abandoning Cybertron and the war. [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]], on the other hand, considered them a cult. {{storylink|Transformers: The Death of Optimus Prime|The Death of Optimus Prime}}

One of the members of the Circle of Light called [[Wing (G1)|Wing]] managed to save the life of the Decepticon warrior [[Drift (G1)|Deadlock]] who he brought to the underground city. There, [[Dai Atlas (Zone)|Dai Atlas]] was displeased by Wing's actions as he believed the Decepticon could potentially be a corruptive presence for their society or worse, bring more of his kind to their settlement. This led to the burden of responsibility of watching over Deadlock being placed on Wing in order to ensure that their society did not collapse due to his actions. {{storylink|Drift issue 2|Drift #2}}

Unfortunately, their society was quickly threatened when the Decepticon [[Lockdown (G1)|Lockdown]] and a band of alien slavers tracked Drift to the planet. Noticing that Drift had recently been rebuilt, they were instantly suspicious of what company Drift had been keeping on this planet, and they demanded Drift's benefactors be traded for his freedom. Drift returned to the Circle of Light and told them of his dilemma, but swore that he would not betray his new home. Despite this, Dai Atlas was reasonably outraged, and swore off battle even in the face of his civilization's extinction. But Dai Atlas was alone in his fear of war, and the rest of the Circle of Light pledged their allegiance to Drift's plan. Since Lockdown and the slavers did not know the Circle of Light's true number, a decoy spaceship was constructed to make it appear that a few stragglers had recently crash-landed on the planet, protecting the location of Crystal City. Drift, who was rebuilt completely to match his newfound peers, joined Wing, Axe, and a handful of sworded warriors who were willing to face Lockdown and the slavers to protect their way of life. {{storylink|Drift issue 3|Drift #3}}

Sure enough, the two groups met in ferocious battle, and the casualties were quickly mounting up on both sides. Tragically, Wing met his death at the hand of the slaver, [[Braid]], an event which shook both Drift and Dai Atlas to their cores. While Drift attempted revenge (badly), Dai Atlas reconsidered his previous stance on war. Refusing to let any more of his friends die on his behalf, he rose Crystal City to the surface of the planet and unleashed the rest of its inhabitants on their intruders. Lockdown and the slavers were rapidly overwhelmed, and the survivors fled.

Drift was offered to join them, but he refused, reminding Dai Atlas of his promise to the late Wing to return the slaves they'd freed. Still, Dai Atlas passed Wing's Great Sword on to Drift. Dai Atlas had changed his perspective on the Circle of Light, and realized that their civilization was best shared rather than hidden, and he promised a new age of evangelism. {{storylink|Drift issue 4|Drift #4}}

Physically imposing and powerful, '''Axe''' is an influential member of the [[Circle of Light]] housed in the new [[Crystal City]]. He made a decision to leave Cybertron along with other knights in order to avoid the civil war and save his race’s ancient culture. Protective of his home, Axe’s commitment to pacifism would be tested after the arrival of Drift and the threat of attack from an alien army.

Axe's role as protector of his people was evident shortly after their ship landed on an inconspicuous world and his fellow Cybertronians began their plans for building a new home. After bringing [[Drift (G1)|Drift]] into their midst, [[Wing (G1)|Wing]] was confronted and questioned publicly by Axe and [[Dai Atlas (Zone)|Dai Atlas]]. The latter assigned Wing the task of babysitting the visiting Decepticon at all times and keeping him away from their impressionable populace. {{storylink|Drift issue 2|Drift #2}}

When the threat of an alien army of Slavers came to their doorstep, Axe sided with Wing and Drift against Dai Atlas. He declared that he was willing to die to protect the bots, culture and secrets hidden in the city. Axe joined a small group of knights who set up a decoy ship as a ruse. As the enemy army approached their position, Axe introduced a rebuilt Drift to the rest of the knights. {{storylink|Drift issue 3|Drift #3}}

Greatly outnumbered, Axe declared that they would all die good deaths. During the fight, Axe noted to Drift that the enemy wasn't engaging him and that now would be the perfect time for betrayal. Drift responded by slicing the head off of the nearest Slaver, to Axe's rousing approval. At the end of the battle, the Cybertronians emerged triumphant, but not without the loss of Wing. After the survivors gathered around Wing's body, Axe questioned Drift about his future plans. Unlike the others, the current isolation in [[Crystal City|New Crystal City]] does not sit well with him. While the likes of [[Dai Atlas (Zone)|Dai Atlas]] believe that the only duty they have is to protect themselves and their society, Wing sees the concept of aiding those in need as a basic tenet of life. This view has put him at odds with his peers, but also led to his being drawn towards the [[Decepticon]] [[Drift (G1)|Deadlock]]. He sees a being in need of help, and as such, Wing will do whatever it takes to bring Deadlock to the side of the angels.

Wing stumbled upon [[Drift (G1)|Deadlock]] while overlooking a strange facility on an unknown planet. Upon approaching the Decepticon, Deadlock took offensive measures against Wing—who continuously dodged the assault—never laying a finger on his opponent. After convincing Deadlock that he meant no harm, Wing identified the structure as a base for slave traders. Wing struck a deal with Deadlock, offering his assistance in acquiring a ship in exchange for helping him free the prisoners. After the two took down a pair of security guards, Wing's garbs were set aflame, revealing himself to be [[Transformer|Cybertronian]]. He claimed that he was neither Autobot nor Decepticon but simply "alone". Before they struck, Wing asked for Deadlock's name, who used the alias "Drift". As they went into the encampment, Deadlock deserted Wing for a ship to escape the planet, though was stopped by one of the traders. Wing rescued Deadlock from this predicament off-panel and took him back to [[Crystal City]] for repairs. {{storylink|Drift issue 1|Drift #1}}

When Deadlock woke up from his repairs, Wing told him of how when the war started, the [[Circle of Light]] had convened and decided to depart, not wanting to get involved in the civil war. At first they only moved so far, but as the war spread across the galaxy they had to hide, and eventually formed the new Crystal City which Wing deemed a "utopia". Wing was then called to answer to [[Dai Atlas (Zone)|Dai Atlas]] for not only going out to rescue the slaves, but bringing Deadlock back to Crystal City, exposing and therefore endangering their existence. Wing defended his decisions, saying that they had created their own faction and that they were giving up their morals in order to maintain their way of life. In the end, Dai Atlas charged Wing with guarding Deadlock.

Wing had a discussion with Deadlock on what the Decepticon symbol stood for. After Deadlock confirmed Wing's suggestion that Decepticons are more powerful and therefore should rule, Wing told him to prove it and engaged him in a fistfight, neither party using weapons. After Wing subdued Deadlock, he said they will do this every day. If Deadlock ever won, he was free to go. If not, he was to stay in Crystal City. Deadlock claimed this wasn't fair as Wing has trained for years, Wing told him to learn. After weeks of fighting, Deadlock told Wing that he joined the Decepticons not for power, but to change the politically corrupt government. Wing told him that his spark was in the right place, but joining the Decepticons was the wrong way to do things. Wing told Drift to look around and see how the utopia of Crystal City was everything he wanted. Their session was interrupted when they were asked to go to the control room for an emergency.

Later, Wing tracked down Drift and confronted him about leaving the city. Drift's only explanation was that he was a Decepticon. He left and met with Dai Atlas and other leaders of Crystal City to tell them that he had made a deal with alien Slavers to betray them. Dai Atlas demanded that Drift be locked up, despite Drift's insistence that he wanted to help them survive the attack. When questioned why he would be on their side, Drift echoed Wing's own words...that he found something worth fighting for. Despite protests from Dai Atlas, a small group of Cybertronians including Wing declared their intention to fight to save the city. {{storylink|Drift issue 3|Drift #3}}

At the approach of the alien army, Wing explained to Drift the significance of the [[Great Sword]]s that each Cybertronian knight carried. The battle began with Wing coaching Drift to pace his fighting. The [[Braid|leader of the alien Slavers]] singled Wing out as a particular nuisance and challenged him to combat. Drift and Dai Atlas could only watch as Wing was stabbed through his chest at the hands of the alien and perished. Wing's death so moved Dai Atlas that the leader gave the order to open the Crystal City vault where their weapons were kept and raise the city above ground. Dai Atlas led a group of Cybertronians himself against the Slavers, defeating them. Once the battle was over, the survivors gathered around Wing's body and Dai Atlas gave the fallen warrior's sword to Drift as a reminder of his change of heart. {{storylink|Drift issue 4|Drift #4}}

'''Drill Nuts''' (ドリルナッツ ''Doriru Nattsu'') is a self-proclaimed genius (of the [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]] variety) and "Master Inventor of the [[Insectron|Insectrons]]". When he's not making bombs and explosives for use in underground operations, he spends most of his free time building strange and intricate doodads. Most of it is really just junk that doesn't even work that well ("Boomerang Bomb," anyone?) but he enjoys doing it nonetheless. He has a very sarcastic personality that often comes off as rude or insulting, at least to those who fail to appreciate his genius. Drill Nuts is more at home underground than above it and is an expert at laying booby traps or popping up under an unsuspecting foe. His only real flaws are when his inventions backfire (admittedly, a fairly common occurrence) or he gets too paranoid and forgets exactly how many traps he's laid and where.

His name is awesome.

Boltax refused them access, and Megatron punched his fist through Boltax's chest, leaving his lifeless body outside the chamber.

Wheeljack smashed a bunch of Vehicons and assaulted Starscream before escaping through the ground bridge to the [[Autobot Central Command|Autobot base]]. There he confronted Makeshift and the pair dueled with swords until Wheeljack was victorious. Bulkhead tossed Makeshift back through the ground bridge along with a "present" for the 'cons.

Wheeljack emerged from the ship and proceeded to trash the Decepticons, but was eventually overwhelmed and taken back to the ''[[Nemesis (Prime)|Nemesis]]'' where he was imprisoned. He was amused to find that [[Starscream (Prime)|Starscream]] was in command of the Decepticons, and almost goaded Starscream into killing him.

An opportunity allowed him to kill his guard and break free from his bonds. He scaled to the top of the ship, where Starscream was waiting for [[Makeshift (Prime)|Makeshift]], who'd taken on Wheeljack's appearance, to open the Autobot [[ground bridge]]. Wheeljack smashed a bunch of Vehicons and assaulted Starscream before escaping through the ground bridge to the [[Autobot Central Command|Autobot base]]. There he confronted Makeshift and the pair dueled with swords until Wheeljack was victorious. Bulkhead tossed Makeshift back through the ground bridge along with a "present" for the 'cons.

Though the Autobots welcomed Wheeljack, he revealed that he intended to return to space. He invited Bulkhead along, but Bulkhead was too attached to his friends on Earth to leave. Bulkhead was sure Wheeljack would return someday... {{storylink|Con Job}}
