Action Masters are Transformers that traded in their ability to transform to become harder, better, faster, stronger and more alive. As the partners and vehicles to aid them in battle.

A few Action Masters managed to retain (or possibly regain) the ability to transform; they are known as Action Master Elites.

Action Masters are the only Transformers to feature Power Plans on the packaging, in addition to the more traditional Tech Spec and bio.

Alt-modes are for WIMPS!

Fiction
Toy packaging blurb
According to the toy packaging Optimus Prime went searching for new energy sources and, within the heart of a black hole discovered Nucleon: a miracle fuel that made Transformers stronger, faster, and more alive, but cost them the ability to transform. Soon the Decepticons stole the technology and created Action Masters of their own.

This story was later referenced with the Japanese release of Nucleon Quest Super Convoy, a black repaint of Powermaster Optimus Prime who was given the backstory of being Prime specially outfitted for this trip into the black hole.

Marvel Comics continuity
noteukonly
Grimlock heard rumors of a new miracle fuel on the planet Hydrus Four. Against orders he stole the non-functioning bodies of his fellow Dinobots and headed there to find out. What he discovered was a ruined world filled with creepy, obsessive, rotting zombie-like beings warning him that it was all because of Nucleon. Being Grimlock, he then went ahead and used the fuel anyway, first on himself and then to revive his fallen teammates.

Grimlock soon found parts of his body inexplicably seizing up, and began to fear that he should have listened to the creepy dying robots after all. After returning to the Ark Grimlock used the Nucleon to repair all the damaged Autobots in the ship's medical bay (as well as Megatron, whom he didn't know was there). Following the Transformers' battle with Unicron Grimlock froze up entirely. It was then that Hi-Q (in the process of merging with Optimus Prime) saw with "Powermaster eyes" that Grimlock wasn't malfunctioning, but changing. He used his Powermaster abilities to speed up the process and Grimlock burst forth in his new, more-powerful Action Master form.

Meanwhile, Hi-Q's own mental merger with Prime was also accelerated by his contact with Nucleon. Soon afterward, the Last Autobot re-created Hi-Q as Optimus Prime, looking very much like his Action Master toy and never being seen to transform. However, while Grimlock explicitly said that his own transformational abilities had been lost, there was no such statement for Prime. So while the involvement of Nucleon and Prime's general appearance suggest that he had become an Action Master too, the uniqueness of his re-creation makes things less certain.

As time progressed more and more Autobots, including Prime, Sludge, Snarl and Swoop, also succumbed to mode-lock. Prowl and Slag were among the few that could still transform, but they had doubts that this would remain much longer. Hearing rumours of further developments on Hydrus Four, Grimlock led the Dinobots there to see if a cure could be found. Amidst a Decepticon ambush, he discovered a new version of Nucleon that lacked the side effects of the original and restored the ability to transform. Another Time and Place

Timelines Classics comic
As in other fiction, neither Grimlock nor Prime kept their Action Master bodies for long. However, Snarl is seen as an Action Master (and his partner Tyrannitron even gets a mention). Given Snarl's hatred of his own dinosaur mode, his remaining an Action Master was likely a matter of taste.

Japanese continuity
Optimus and Megatron's pre-G2 bodies share a striking similarity to their Action Master toys. Likewise Optimus Prime has been documented as searching out a New Energy source called Nucleon that's located within a black hole. Finally, Optimus Prime's Action Master was sold with New Years Convoy, and described as the intermediate form between Prime's various G2 Bodies. G-2 (story page)

Fandom reception
The Action Master toyline, depicting the obvious oxymoron of "Transformers who don't transform," generated initial ire ("BLASPHEMY!") from some fans. This was magnified as Action Masters were released in the final year of the original Transformers toy line in the US. When Transformers was summarily canceled in North America, some fans blamed the gimmick for the death of the franchise (despite the wide variety of other factors that doubtlessly were involved).

One aspect Action Masters is notable for, however, is the mass reintroduction of "classic" characters. New toys for old characters was not a theme the original toy line visited very often–in fact, 1988's Powermaster Optimus Prime and the Classic Pretenders from 1989 were the only notable exceptions. In other words, to have a single sub-line with so many recurring favorites was, at the time, a novelty. In addition, the classic characters were designed to resemble their cartoon counterparts more closely. For much of the Season 1 and 2 cast, the original figures having been designed years before they were stylized and simplified for the cartoon, these Action Masters were the closest likenesses of their fiction representations ever.

As with many other changes to the Transformers brand, initial hostility towards Action Masters from the fandom eventually became less intense and diversified into a broad range of opinion. Some of the most in-demand vintage (and therefore expensive) Transformers toys are Action Masters, and new characters from this subgroup are still hearkened back to in newer toy lines. For example, Axer showed up in the Robots in Disguise toyline; Armada Overload has design elements based on Rollout (with his Mini-Con companion actually named Rollout); Cybertron Smokescreen's colors are a partial homage to Rad; and a new version of Banzai-Tron was an exclusive at 2009.
No mountain is tall enough, no river treacherous enough to give him pause. Alone against rough terrain, be it on land or in the sea, is where this Wrecker's fuel pump really gets going. Though he loves the challenge he's not fixated on conquering new terrain, he simply enjoys pitting himself against it. As he says, "The thrill is in the journey."

As a Jumpstarter, Topspin can transform between modes in a fraction of an instant, significantly faster than most Transformers.
Topspin was a member of the elite Autobot force the Wreckers. Topspin played a bit-part in Operation: Volcano. Target: 2006 After delivering a few pointless lines to establish his personality, he achieved very little until he suffered from a bad case of death by Megatron in the Time Wars, being the first of many casualties inflicted upon the hopelessly out matched Wreckers and Mayhems. Topspin wasn't seen again... at least, with his head attached.

Marvel UK future timelines
In the year 2510, Topspin witnessed the end of the old war and the start of a new one. With the last Decepticon destroyed, the Autobots began arguing among themselves as to whether Springer or Ultra Magnus should be Rodimus Prime's chosen successor. A scuffle broke out and casualties happened on both sides, leading to a new Autobot Civil War between the Technobots and the Wreckers, with Rodimus sitting in the middle of the war zone bawling like a baby. Peace

Dreamwave comics continuity
In the Dark Ages, Topspin split off from the Autobots with his fellow Wreckers to act as an independent faction. Under Springer's command, they frequently clashed with Ratbat's Ultracons for territorial control, especially in the manufacturing area known as the Tagan Heights. War Within: The Dark Ages

In the modern era, Topspin continued serving with the Wreckers in the new Unified Cybertronian forces. The Wreckers now operated under Ultra Magnus as his personal guard. Brothers' Burden When the Stunticons were unleashed on Cybertron as Menasor, the Wreckers took arms to bring him down. After Twin Twist drilled the combiner in the foot and brought him down to ground level, Topspin shot Menasor right in the face with his electro-blasters. Passive Aggression The Jumpstarters remained in Magnus's command after Shockwave's deposing. The Route of All Evil
Topspin fired heavy artillery at the Decepticon siege mode armature on Varas Centralus. Stormbringer issue 2 He medically treated Nosecone on Cybertron after the Wreckers rescued him and Afterburner from Centurion droids. He then voiced the Wreckers' PR campaign to the Technobots. ("Leave it to the professionals".) Stormbringer issue 3

He also led the hit and run against Thunderwing. He is a true Robot of All Trades. Stormbringer issue 4

When the Wreckers were again called upon to battle Thunderwing on Corata-Vaz, Topspin was there, trying alongside his comrades to get past the massive Pretender to a Nega-Core it was guarding; a device essential for bringing forth the Expansion. Spotlight: Hardhead Spotlight: Doubledealer

Jetfire managed to remotely override Thunderwing's predetermined directives for a brief time, so the Wreckers got by and found the Nega-Core. Topspin and Twin Twist then began attempting to decommission it, ultimately prepping it for transport through a space bridge portal. Once Autobot teams on different planets had reached the other Nega-Cores, it was Topspin who carefully explained to everyone the process by which to properly unlatch and move them. Jetfire lost control of Thunderwing by this point and it turned back to resume attacking the Wreckers, but they survived. Spotlight: Sideswipe

After a battle with the Decepticons, Topspin was taken prisoner by Turmoil alongside several other Autobots. Kup and Springer sprung them from the detention block on Turmoil's cruiser, but the Wreckers apparently went their separate ways after this mission. Spotlight: Drift

Over two years later, the Wreckers were reformed and were taking on new recruits; Topspin and Twin Twist were still part of the team. While meeting the new guys, they saw Ironfist briefly fall unconscious. Topspin was concerned, but Ironfist claimed he was fine... while Guzzle revealed that Ironfist was the secret identity of "Fisitron", the historian behind the Wreckers: Declassified datalogs. They were amused to find their official files were top secret, with Topspin joking (badly) he should call himself Top Secret. When Ironfist raised the idea of finding out what was in their files, Topspin remarked there was nothing special: they were just two normal guys. Last Stand of the Wreckers issue 1
* The portraits of Topspin and Twin Twist on their box-back tech-specs were originally reversed, causing some children a bit of confusion. This was eventually fixed.
* Early versions of Topspin contain the letters "D.A.R." on the wings. There are a holdover from the original pre-Transformers Diaclone release, where the Jumpstarters were called "Diaclone Attack Robo".
I realize that there are not 3 actual Skystalkers, but there are many other names that could easily be confused with it. Is the 3 characters sharing a name an absolute rule or a more general guide? The following may need disambiguating with Skystalker: Denebian Stalker, Stalker, Nightstalker, Snowstalker, and Sparkstalker. Also Luke Skywalker and Skyscorcher seem very similar (more so than all the other "Sky" names anyways). Sharp Edge is a raging warrior on the brink of psychotic. He prefers to frighten the mortal hell out of his enemies to gain the mental edge before he strikes. His drive to fight, however, reveals his insecurity. Sharp Edge believes that fighting is all that proves you are alive and secretly does not wish for the war to end. He fears that he may cease to exist if this happens. Sharp Edge never questions his orders and follows them to the letter, but is always dragged down by that nagging feeling that if he does too good a job he will no longer exist.
