Blitzwing not only has three modes (robot, jet, and tank), he also has three alternate personalities (a cold strategist, a short-tempered hothead, and a total nutcase) along with the faces rattling around in his head to go with them. He's as liable to have a conversation with himself as he is to say a word to his fellow Decepticons. Pretty much the only thing that keeps him in line is that all three of his personalities are scared to death of Megatron.

Blitzwing's cold personality is represented by a long, blue face with a monocle and talks with quiet disdain. His easily angered personality has a red face and is gap-toothed, making him look and sound like a certain Austrian musclehead. Finally, his crazy personality's face looks like nothing so much as a black jack-o'-lantern and just sounds hysterical. All three personalities have a German accent, and apparently he has trouble flying in a straight line.

Blitzwing's special power is based on ice-rays, flame-rays, or laser-rays, depending on which personality is dominant at the time.

Basically, he's the Purple Baron.
Blitzwing was aboard the Nemesis with the other Decepticons at the time of the All Spark's re-discovery. He partially froze Blackarachnia's arm, commenting on how her demeanor was as unpleasant as her organic beast mode. When Blackarachnia advised him to blow it out his actuator, Blitzwing angrily demanded that she refer to him by his proper name, or else he would...express his feelings in song! His out-of-tune rendition of "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" got all the Decepticons arguing until Megatron entered, prompting Blitzwing to fall silent with the rest.

When it became clear the Nemesis was going to crash into an exploding space bridge, Blitzwing fled in an escape pod. Transform and Roll Out!

After Megatron's disappearance, Blitzwing placed a bounty on Optimus Prime, intending to punish him for destroying Megatron. Fifty solar cycles later, the bounty hunter Lockdown contacted Blitzwing, saying he had Prime. Blitzwing promised that Lockdown would receive payment once Blitzwing received Prime—then asked if he could please, please please see Prime turn into a fire truck. Thrill of the Hunt

Blitzwing and Lugnut followed a beacon to the Moon to find the wreckage of the Nemesis. The pair of them had similar problems determining the dominant species on Earth as the Autobots did, mistaking Earth's automatons and machines for sentient beings. During an encounter with the Autobots, Megatron opted to radio Lugnut exclusively, leaving Blitzwing struggling to work out what exactly was going on. Blitzwing believed Lugnut was only listening to voices in his head, so Lugnut had to take him along forcibly. Uncertain of the number and strength of the Autobots' "reinforcements" (the Detroit Police Department), the pair scanned Earth vehicles for disguises so they could lay low. Blitzwing's calculating persona wanted to scan a fighter jet, while his aggressive side wanted a tank. After a brief argument, his crazy side won out and scanned both.

The two Decepticons followed the Autobots to Lake Erie, where Blitzwing froze the lake. When the Autobots submerged, he followed them in tank form. Blitzwing was lured by the Autobots towards the Ark and blasted by one of its weapons systems. He and Lugnut were left fragmented but functional and floated to the surface, only to be met by Starscream, who offered to repair them in exchange for a pledge of undying allegiance... Lost and Found (Animated episode)
Trivia
* Marty Isenberg originally envisioned a character who could change into anything. When that (obviously) proved unworkable in toy terms, the character of Blitzwing as a triple-changer was suggested for the role.

* His helmet is an obvious nod to a World War II-era German Stahlhelm helmet and goggles. Given the overall design in robot mode, the nature of his personalities and even his name itself, this really isn't very surprising.

* Blitzwing's face-changing gimmick was in part inspired by Man-E-Faces from Masters of the Universe. He's not the first Transformers toy to feature multiple rotating faces; Alpha Q, inspired by the five-faced Generation 1 Quintessons, holds that distinction. Whether Blitzwing (or the Quintessons) have any roots in such larger cultural currents as the many three-faced depictions of the Buddha and various gods from the Hindu pantheon (or at least Japanese cartoon characters from the 80s based on them) remains unknown.

* Blitzwing's decision to scan both a tank and a jet in Lost and Found was an interesting one, possibly implying that Blitzwing wasn't a Triple Changer to begin with, and perhaps that other Animated-era Transformers can take on multiple forms if they just scan other vehicles. He's only a tank when he's in angry mode, and only a jet when in his colder, calculating personality, so if a requirement to being a Triple Changer is having a few bolts loose, maybe that's not a road other Transformers wish to take.

The Dinobots are a three-member subgroup consisting of the leader Grimlock, Swoop, and Snarl. Violent and primitive, they were granted sparks by Sari's key, and a range of combat abilites by Megatron. Now they inhabit an island in the middle of Lake Erie, sometimes simply living in peace, other times getting involved in the thick of things alongside the Autobots.

Fiction
Grimlock and the Dinobots were originally animatronic dinosaur models at the Dino Drive theme park that were badly damaged by the clumsy Autobot Bulkhead. The remains were brought to Isaac Sumdac's lab for repair, where the disembodied Megatron took an interest in them and attempted to turn them into robotic attack drones as practice for re-creating his own body. Thusly rebuilt, the Dinobots went on a rampage at Dino Drive, but were restrained by the Autobots when Ratchet and Bumblebee captured them in an electromagnetic field. When Sari's All Spark key reacted by tugging her toward her Autobot friends, she plugged it into Bumblebee's weapons systems to boost their powers, but this only resulted in the Dinobots being blasted with All Spark energy. The three robots were apparently left deactivated by the blast and were returned to Sumdac's lab once more. It was there, however, that the full extent of their exposure to the All Spark's energy was revealed, as the three Dinobots suddenly came to life!

The Tyrannosaurus dubbed itself Grimlock and declared itself to be leader of the group, despite Megatron's attempts to give the trio orders. In contrast, the lab's other occupant, the Tutor Bot, happily responded to Megatron's cries for obedience and began a lesson on dinosaurs, their connection to fossil fuels, and the use of fossil fuels in cars. The simple-minded Grimlock took this to mean that cars "ate" dinosaurs, and Megatron convinced the trio to destroy these "fossil feeders", including the only thing worse than cars...cars and trucks that turn into robots. Equipped with deadly fire-breath thanks to Megatron's enhancements, the Dinobots set about their task immediately, inevitably drawing the attention of the Autobots. At Bulkhead's suggestion, the Autobots drew them to a deserted parking lot, where the Dinobots wound up defeating themselves by melting down the lot's maccadam surface into tar and getting stuck in it.

Sumdac intended to destroy the Dinobots, writing them off as mindless machines, and Optimus Prime agreed with his decision, but Prowl could sense the spark of life within them. With Bulkhead's help, he relocated them to a deserted island where they could live peacefully and undisturbed. Grimlock took an almost immediate dislike to some birds that defecated on him, but his anger had an unforeseen effect: It triggered another of Megatron's enhancements and caused him to transform into robot mode! Snarl and Swoop were quite shocked, but Grimlock was rather pleased with the results. Blast from the Past

Survival of the Fittest

Some time after the Dinobots were deposited on the island, Meltdown arrived to use the island as a hideout to create transformable humans. With his acid touch, he forcibly made the Dinobots his servants under threat of pain. In addition to having them serve as guards, Meltdown sent Swoop to kidnap Sari Sumdac. When Prowl and Bulkhead arrived to investigate, the Dinobots attacked them. After being dropped into Meltdown's base, Captain Fanzone, who had followed the Autobots, grabbed one of Meltdown's protective suits, which he used to trap the villain. Now free of Meltdown's control, the Dinobots transformed into robot mode and prepared to take their revenge on him. This wasn't totally unexpected; Prowl even offered Meltdown a choice: prison or the Dinobots. Then Colossus Rhodes and two of Meltdown's early transforming-humans experiments walked out, and the Dinobots turned their attention toward them, terrifying the trio of mutants right before pulverizing them. Captain Fanzone decided that as long as the Dinobots stayed out of Detroit, he didn't have a problem with them being on the island, but Bulkhead and Prowl remained unsure whether or not they should inform Prime of what happened. Survival of the Fittest

Summary
With Ravage and his Transwarp Cruiser backing them up, the Predacons unleash a full assault on the Maximal base. It doesn't take long for Ravage and Rampage to bring down the base's shield. Ravage has Tarantulas transfer all the cruiser's power into one enormous missile. Before it can fire, Rattrap bursts into the ship's weapons hold and tosses a pair of magnetic bombs that adhere to Tarantulas's hands. The bombs obliterate Tarantulas, the ship's interior, and Ravagem-who faces the onrushing fireball with a stoic cry of "Decepticons forever!" The cruiser falls out of the sky, coming to rest mere feet from Rampagem-who is then blasted by the still-armed missile.

With the cruiser destroyed and his minions out of commission, Megatron flees. Optimus notes that he's not headed back to base, realizes where he's probably going, and orders the Maximals to pursue.

Meanwhile, Blackarachnia and Silverbolt make their way into the caves of the volcano, uncovering the object of Blackarachnia's questm-the Ark. Blackarachnia explains to Silverbolt that the ship contains the Autobots' "finest heroes", but was attacked by Decepticons, with members of both factions stored inside, who will awaken in the distant future to re-start the Great War. Blackarachnia is concerned only with the power it possessesm-but Megatron arrives just then, blasting Silverbolt offline and sealing the entrance to the caves behind him.

The Maximals arrive hot on his heels, find the sealed entrance, and start digging their way in. Inside, Megatron threatens to vaporize Silverbolt, convincing Blackarachnia to use the access codes to gain access to the Ark (though she vehemently maintains it's only so they'll have some cover in the face of the imminent Maximal attack). The Maximals burst through in time to see the two Predacons sealing the Ark behind them.

Blackarachnia activates the ship's defenses to hold off the Maximals, while Megatron goes to "effect a more permanent solution." Entering the main bridge of the ship, he hovers among the fallen Autobots and Decepticons, eulogizing the Decepticons and cursing the Autobots, until he comes face to face with his intended targetm-Optimus Prime, the original leader of the Autobots, who kept the Decepticons from victory (and therefore left their Predacon descendants in a subservient position to the dominant Maximals). Megatron charges his main weapon and prepares to fire.

In the caves, the Maximals are pelted by fire from the ship's cannon, till Rattrap manages to force a backblast that deactivates the cannon and shields. Rhinox struggles to open the mighty doors of the Ark. But the Maximals are too latem-Megatron unleashes a full-power blast at Optimus Prime's head, destroying it.

A time storm immediately wells up, spreading outward from the Ark and into space. The Maximals find themselves phasing in and out of past bodiesm-as well as out of existencem-as Megatron emerges from the Ark, triumphant.
* This episode called into sudden question the location of the Maximal and Predacon bases. The events of "Code of Hero" seem to firmly place the series somewhere in Africa, where early humanity evolved; the templates for the Maximals' beast modes (gorillas, cheetahs, rhinos) would seem to back this up. However, the Ark is traditionally seen to have crashed in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. If this is the case, the Maximals pursued Megatron across the Atlantic Ocean and over an entire continent!
:Beast Wars, however, does not use a strict interpretation of any Generation 1 storyline; it could be that in this version of the Generation 1 history, the Ark also landed somewhere in Africa. The question is never directly addressed in the show.
* Either way, it doesn't make much sense that the Maximals make no attempt to shoot down Megatron while he's still on the run, rather than waiting till he reaches his destination.
