A combiner is a group of Transformers that assemble and combine their bodies into a single machine, or that composite machine itself. Most combiners form a larger Super Robot with its own unique personality (a character in its own right), but other varieties of combiner exist, forming vehicles, weapons, or other items. Combiners tend to be considerably larger and more powerful than the average Transformer, equivalent to strategic-grade weapons.

There are a number of combiner-related terms that can be easy to mix up, partially because some of them are used interchangeably. Additionally, most of them have no formal definition and thus may be used differently by different fans. Consequently, most of the discussion which follows should not be taken as the word of Primus, but as a rough description of common usage.

Terms for combiners
Combiner: As above, a member of a group of Transformers who assemble into a composite form. Also refers to that composite form itself. This is the most general term for all combining Transformers. "Combiner" is the most common term for combining Transformers that has been used by Hasbro in an official capacity, starting with the Micromaster Combiners from 1990 (with the exception of the more limited "special teams" and a recent official use of the term "gestalt"), having even appeared with its own logo on Robots in Disguise toy packaging.

Gestalt: Fan-terminology for a certain class of combiners—generally used only for "big robot" combiners with emergent personalities. The term is nebulously defined, such that some fans would consider a two-member combiner such as Squawkbox a gestalt, but other fans would not. This is probably the fandom's second most frequently-used term for combining Transformers. Its use in Transfandom is derived from the principle of gestalt psychology, which is sometimes simplified to mean "greater/different than the sum of its parts," though a few fans consider this term pretentious and obtuse. The term remained firmly in realm of fanon for years, although it did appear in some Energon design sketches implying that Hasbro designers used the term occasionally, until in 2007 "gestalt" made its first official appearance, in the bio of the Titanium Series Menasor toy, once more in 2007's "Spotlight: Optimus Prime" referring to Monstructor, and again in 2009 in the "First (and Second) in Flight" comic where Perceptor describes Jetfire's & Jetstorm's combination into Safeguard as a sort of "gestalt powerlink".

Scramble City combiner: A specific type of Generation 1 giant gestalt that follows the five-member design featured in the Japanese "Scramble City" OVA. The team leader is larger than the other members and forms the main body of the combiner, while the others are smaller and form the limbs. The limbs are interchangeable, although there is always a generally-accepted “normal” formation. Further, the limbs are interchangeable from one Scramble City combiner to another, making for a large number of bizarre combinations. (See Abomenaticus, Autobot Super Scramble, Comperian, Decepticon Super Scramble, and Scramble 7.) Limbs are also able to attach to and augment Metroplex & Metrotitan (see “Trivia” below). Note that this term is purely descriptive rather than being a proper name.

Special Team: A synonym for Scramble City combiner. When the Scramble City toys were marketed in Europe they were referred to as Special Teams, and the term even appeared in the UK comic book series. The term was used in some marketing materials in the US, such as packing lists for the toy case assortments, but never appeared in US fiction until the Ultimate Guide was published in 2004.

Super Robot: A robot which is formed through the combination of two or more Transformers. Powered-up robot modes composed of only one Transformer who combines with some of their own accessories are often also referred to as Super Robots, such as Powermaster Optimus Prime or the incarnations of Prime from Robots in Disguise and all three Unicron Trilogy series. It is probably safe to informally refer to any such mode as a Super Robot (thus including, say, G1 Ultra Magnus and Energon Landmine). Note that this means Super Robots are not always combiners and do not have to have their own personality. Rather, Super Robot and combiner are two different categories of Transformer which sometimes overlap. A one-robot Super Robot may also be referred to as that robot's Super Mode.

Fusilateral quintrocombiner: Coined by Simon Furman in issue 9 of the Generation 2 comic to refer to the Combaticons. It presumably is meant to refer to all the Scramble City teams except possibly the Seacons, as their combined forms consist of six robots (not five, so they could possibly be fusilateral hexocombiners I guess...). It may also apply to the Predacons, but it doesn't matter because nobody uses this term anyway.

Amalgam model: Yet another obscure term for combiners first used by Simon Furman via Wheeljack in the "Devastation Derby!" story in the UK comic books.

Types of combiner
As mentioned above, most combiners form a super robot. However, there are many other types of combining in the Transformers multiverse.

In the Energon franchise, most of the Autobot characters were able to combine with each other in pairs much like Victorys Multiforce. These combined forms can probably be considered Super Robots. The combined form was simply controlled by whichever Autobot was "on top". Make whatever jokes you will.

Generation 1 contains many examples of combined alternate modes, including Reflector, Dreadwing, Big Powered, the Battlestar, and the Double Targetmasters.

The Micromaster Combiners are made up of Transformers whose altmodes combine into vehicles, with one partner being the front and another the rear. The combined forms do not have specific names. Thanks to the generic peg-and-socket connection method used, any two Micromaster combiners can be linked (though some such as the dump truck/space shuttle combo may attract comment). These altmode combiners should not be confused with the Micromaster "Sixcombiners", six-robot teams who combine to form a Super Robot.

The Unicron Trilogy's Mini-Cons brought to the fiction combined weapon modes, like the Star Saber & Dark Saber swords, Requiem Blaster cannon, and Skyboom Shield.

Not combiners
Not all cases of multiple things attaching to each other are combiners. As mentioned above, many Super Robots—which are formed through a conglomeration of parts—are not combiners. Energon Landmine, for example.

A similar case can be found in Transformers who have two or more "components" which combine into a single entity. G1 Sky Lynx has lynx and dino-bird components, G1 Omega Supreme has tank, base, and rocket components, and Magmatron has three dinosaur components. However, all of these components are considered to be "part of" the overall Transformer, even through they can act independently. The Duocons are another case of this sort. All of these examples are not combiners because there is only one Transformer involved in each of them, regardless of how many bodies that Transformer may simultaneously operate. Such robots are occasionally referred to as "Reverse Combiners" within the fandom.

(Confusing things further are the comics which treated Sky Lynx and the Duocons as triple changers, able to transform between the combined mode and the ones for individual components without any parts separating off.)

Sometimes a smaller Transformer will attach to and enhance a larger Transformer in some way. This is the case when Mini-Cons powerlink with bulks, as well as with binary-bonded partners like Headmasters, Powermasters/Godmasters, Kiss Players and Breastforce members. Although these examples do include more than one Transformer (or a Transformer and a fleshling), they are not considered "combiners". The simplest justification for this is that, in these cases, the "combined" form is almost exactly the same in appearance as the non-combined form.

And sometimes things just combine for no real reason at all. Just deal with it. We hate it, oh God yes, but there it is. We're sorry.

Unused concepts
Combiners were a very popular idea during the Generation 1 toyline and as such there are loads of scrapped combiner designs that never got past the drawing board. Among them were:
*A Scramble City style dinosaur combiner. The body is a T-Rex, while the limbs are a Pteradactyl (right arm), Ankylosaurus (left leg), Dimetrodon (left arm), and Styracosaurus (right leg)

*A decidedly goofy organic insect combiner composed of a stag beetle (right leg), another beetle (left leg), grasshopper (left arm), fly (right arm), and a cockroach body.

*A cybernetic beast combiner that did not form a robot, but rather a large cybernetic monster. It is formed from a cyber bat, mole, stag beetle, and a couple of fish things.

*A fifteen (!) vehicle Micromaster combiner where the only attached parts not contained by the component robots were the large robot fists. This combiner consists of three uniformly colored teams (in a similar fashion to the vehicular Voltron of the same time period):
**Air team (blue)- two jets, two helicopters, a space shuttle.
**Construction team (green)- a hauler, a bulldozer, a steam shovel, a tank (don't ask), a missile carrier (don't ask).
**Street team (red)- two cars, a motorcycle, a formula racer, a jeep.

*Another, simpler dinosaur combiner composed of a Pteradactyl, a not-really-a-Stegosaurus, and a T-Rex with a very large head. The three combine into a dinosaur thing similar to Magmatron's combined dino mode. It shares many visual characteristics with Tomy's relatively simple robot designs.
*A five vehicle combiner (evidently not Scramble City in nature) composed of a steam engine (right arm), steam boat (torso), car (right leg), truck (left leg), and plane (left arm).

Trivia
*G1 Devastator and Raiden are the only combiners from Diaclone toylines.
*Scramble City-type combiners were initially designed to be a sub-line of Diaclone called... what else... Scramble City. This goes along with their ability to interact with and attach to Metroplex & Metrotitan, the designs of which were also originally intended for the Diaclone line.
*Six of the seven released G1 Scramble City-type combiners were apparently released in themed pairs, themes usually further reinforced by their team members' tech spec bios to some extent.
**Aerialbots (air vehicles) and Stunticons (ground vehicles)
**Protectobots (rescue vehicles) and Combaticons (offensive vehicles... and a space shuttle)
**Technobots (futuristic vehicles) and Terrorcons (fantastical beasts)
**The Seacons are the odd men out, but the above mentioned unreleased dinosaur Scramble City combiner may have been an intended adversary.
*In IDW comic continuity Squawkbox exists before Combiner technology has become available to either faction. This means that either Squawkbox is the core being and he's later split into Squawktalk and Beastbox or um... someone at IDW screwed up.
The Autobots must stop Galvatron from smashing Cybertron into Plains Planet.

Synopsis
Misha stands in a field of dead grass and notes that a planet has been destroyed. Roadblock calls in, reporting that Cybertron is about to emerge from the warp gate.

Remember that painting in the Super Energon Temple? It's still there.

Primus is still glowing within Cybertron, where Kicker and his family anxiously wait for him to awaken. With their energon running out, the Omnicons can't spare any more energon stars for him.

Somewhere in space, the Unicron sphere glows.

The gas grid snaps and crackles.

Planets float in space... and Cybertron emerges from the warp gate, appearing out of the blackness of space.

The Autobots and Decepticons are shooting it out on the planet's surface. Galvatron and Starscream urge Six Shot to finish repairing the energon grid, but he gives them lip, saying that they could win easily if they'd just follow his plan. Galvatron relents; Six Shot advises them to clear the area. Soon, a build-up of gas detonates the planet's surface beneath the Autobots, forcing them into a hasty retreat. Six Shot is pleased with the results; a huge cloud of energon gas emerges in the central city.

The Autobots have been blown into space and are drifting, damaged. Optimus calls in to the others, who promise to prepare energon stars. Misha reports that the planet is accelerating and will soon collide with Plains Planet. The Autobots don't have the manpower to take back the control room. Dr. Jones says to leave it to him, and heads off to investigate the gas grid flow. Kicker follows.

Cybertron impacts three smaller planets, which explode. Misha explains that their atmospheres aren't strong enough to withstand the energon. Roadblock theorizes that if they impact Plains Planet, a worst-case scenario could be a chain reaction that would destroy the entire universe.

Somewhere in space, the Unicron orb glows.

Optimus (still combined with Omega) watches the exploding planets and realizes that "the evil" is still somewhere in Cybertron. He heads that way, despite his troops' urging. Galvatron happily meets up with him in the gaseous atmosphere, gloating at his damaged condition.

Kicker and Dr. Jones work on the gas grid. They plan to cut off some of the towers that are accelerating the planet, but that still won't stop its forward motion. Before they can figure out a way to stop it, Ironhide reports strange activity in the Primus chamber.

Unicron orb? Still there.

Optimus demands to know why Galvatron has kept Unicron's spark alive. Galvatron denies everything, and shoots him. Prime calls out to Primus for help.

Meanwhile, Super Energon Temple painting? Still there.

Unicron orb? Still there.

As Galvatron moves in for a killing blow, the light of Primus streaks forth, enveloping both leaders. The gas is sucked back into Cybertron, and Optimus Supreme stands enormous, almost half as tall as the planet itself. Galvatron just laughs. Six Shot reactivates the energon towers to keep the planet moving forward.

Groaning a deep and guttural groan, Optimus smashes his fists into the planet to try and stop it. Kicker contacts Rodimus's team and has them head for the north sector, to destroy the energon towers there. The recently-recovered Jetfire joins the team and takes command, having Rodimus stay behind to watch Optimus's back.

Galvatron sends his troops to stop Jetfire's team, and attacks Optimus as he strains against the planet. Rodimus engages him, despite his injuries. Jetfire's team keeps the Decepticons at bay, while Kicker and the Omnicons begin destroying towers. Galvatron orders Six Shot to increase the tower output; Six Shot refuses, saying it's too dangerous with the towers exploding. Galvatron responds to this in predictable fashion: with insults. Six Shot basically says "hell with it" and increases the power.

Rodimus is distracted by the sight of Plains Planet looming near, allowing Galvatron to score a hit. Meanwhile the towers are going crazy, exploding left and right, prompting both sides to flee. Galvatron rebukes Six Shot, but he protests that he's just following orders. Galvatron sends Starscream back to the control room to deal with him.

Galvatron happily points out to Rodimus that Optimus has become infected by Unicron; he flies away, saying they'll finish this later. The towers shut down, and Optimus brings the planet to a halt. Rodimus has a brief moment to be relieved... until Optimus continues smashing his arm into the planet's depths. Rodimus urges him to stop, which he does.

Optimus glows green, and his enormous form dissolves into green light, as Alpha Q observes and wonders what Galvatron meant.

Oh, and the Unicron orb? Remember that? Still there.
:—Optimus Prime, watching four planets explode. Gee, ya think?!

Other Notes
Lost in Translation
* It starts right away, as Misha makes the nonsensical observation that "That planet is destroyed!" while standing in a field. She's supposed to be noting that the planet is deteriorating (due to the lack of a sun.)
* As Cybertron exits the warp gate, the dub has Optimus make the sage and timely observation that "It looks like they're about to fire up the warp gate!"
* The dub adds in some talk from Six Shot about how they can use the gas to propel the planet, and has him saying that the explosion released "a huge gust of energy" (conflicting with the animation, which shows that the explosion released the green energon gas.) He's supposed to just say that they no longer need the energon towers (for repelling the Autobots), since the gas is covering the planet again.
* Misha's explanation about the exploding planets omits her mention that they are "unripened", and that the green energon gas is reacting with the energon in the planets.
* Galvatron makes the strange dub observation that Optimus is "over one thousand feet tall"... which, based on the previous shot, would make Cybertron maybe one mile in diameter.
* The dub consistently identifies the planet-propelling energon towers as being in the "north"... but the animation (assuming north is at the top) show them near the planet's equator. Super Link says they're in the east.
* When Optimus smashes his fist into the planet to stop it, sending reverberations through the Primus chamber, Kicker immediately responds with "Hey, what'd you do that for?!"... even though he's inside the planet and could have no idea what caused it. It's a random dub addition.

Pain Count
Continuity errors
Miscellaneous trivia
* Another excellent example of Energons bizarre scene editing. Stock shots of various elements are shown randomly, as if implying some monumental significance, but mainly serving to confuse the viewer and disrupt the story flow.
* Given a chance to actually use their vehicle modes to escape the energon gas explosion, Downshift and Cliffjumper instead choose to just run.
* Yay, magic glowing lights!
* So... Optimus is apparently becoming contaminated by Unicron. You might think this is leading up to something, but no, after a two-second scene in which Optimus smashes a bit of Cybertron, the (totally unexplained, by the way) Unicron power within him is never mentioned again except as just another magic mushroom power-up device. It did crop back up in Super Link, in the episode "Spark" (only to be mangled out for the dub), but even there, it served little purpose besides causing Optimus and Galvatron to fight one another, which... they would have done anyway.
Ultra Magnus hates his brother, Optimus Prime, because Prime got the Matrix and he didn't. They combine all the time anyway, either because Magnus can't deny his noble Autobot nature, or because if Prime gets blown to tiny bits, the Matrix could get blown to tiny bits with him.

Ultra Magnus was created by Alpha Trion and brought online at the exact same moment as his brother, Optimus Prime. They both served with distinction during the Cybertronian Civil Wars, presumably against the Predacons. Afterwards, when the time came for Vector Sigma (also referred to as the Allspark in this continuity) to choose a new Matrix Bearer and Autobot leader, Magnus was passed over in favor of Optimus. Magnus was infuriated by this, and left Cybertron immediately afterwards. He became increasingly embittered, both towards his brother and mainstream Autobots in general, causing him to come off as something of a jerk when dealing with them.

Some time later, he tracked down his brother to the planet he was currently charged with protecting, Earth. There, he first encountered the Decepticons and singlehandedly defeated them all, even when they combined into Ruination, becoming the first being to beat Ruination without any sort of help. Ultra Magnus (episode) He then challenged Optimus Prime for possession of the Matrix of Leadership and command of the Autobots. Optimus refused to fight his brother, however, not that that stopped Ultra Magnus from blasting him with his powerful weapon, Blue Bolts. Optimus was only saved by the intervention of Side Burn, Prowl and X-Brawn, who rescued their commander and transported him to a remote island to recuperate. It was there that Optimus revealed to Side Burn his relationship to Ultra Magnus, much to the young Autobot's shock. Unfortunately, the Predacon Sky-Byte had used a hidden tracking device to locate Optimus Prime, and he, Megatron and the Decepticons ganged up on the weakened Autobot leader. Ultra Magnus then showed up, having followed Sky-Byte, and forced Optimus Prime to merge with him, becoming Omega Prime, with the intention of absorbing the Matrix's power. However, he was shocked to discover that Optimus Prime had just as much control over Omega Prime as he did, and they were forced to cooperate to use their combined form's firepower to drive off the Decepticons. Ultra Magnus: Forced Fusion!

Although he remained a free agent, Ultra Magnus would come to the aid of the Autobots whenever he felt they required assistance, though he was always quick to deny that he actually cared for their safety. He also often combined with Optimus when the situation required it. These frequent combinations apparently had some unexpected side effects, as Ultra Magnus seemed to unconsciously channel the energies of the Matrix into the Autobot brothers, upgrading them to their new "supercharged" forms. Although this was never explicitly explained in the show, afterwards, Optimus speculated that he and Magnus were now somehow "sharing" the Matrix.

Ultra Magnus once pretended to join the Decepticons in an attempt to infiltrate the group, however, this plan failed due to the interference of the Autobot brothers, who believed that Magnus had genuinely betrayed them. An all-out battle between Autobots and Predacons/Decepticons soon erupted, with Ultra Magnus proving that his true loyalties lay with the Autobots. The Two Faces of Ultra Magnus

He would constantly appear out of nowhere whenever the Autobots were in trouble, using his strength, guns and combining power to help save the day. How he always managed this is unknown.

By the end of the series, Optimus and Ultra Magnus had more-or-less reconciled, and merged into Omega Prime one last time to defeat Galvatron at the Earth's center, ending the conflict at last. Ultra Magnus then took custody of the prisoners aboard Fortress Maximus to return them to Cybertron. The Final Battle (RID)

Cybertron comic
However, this was not the end of Ultra Magnus's story, for both he and his brother were abducted by the chaos-bringer himself, Unicron, and pitted against his legion of minions as part of an elaborate attempt to revitalize himself. This war ended abruptly when Unicron's physical form was destroyed in another universe, resulting in the Unicron Singularity, which threatened the very multiverse itself. Ultra Magnus and Optimus Prime were among the Transformers who were displaced in the Unicron Trilogy universe in the wake of this event. There they joined forces with the Autobots Sentinel Maximus, Vector Prime, and even that universe's version of their creator, Alpha Trion. When Nemesis Prime attempted to destroy Primus himself using the Dead Matrix, they intervened as Omega Prime. Later, while his brother helped Primus recover, Ultra Magnus defeated Nemesis Prime in one-on-one combat.

He later became involved in the Mini-Con Civil War that erupted on Cybertron's moons, and even fought against the reincarnated Unicron himself as Omega Prime.
:Magnus' alternate mode is a massive car-carrier vehicle (akin to his G1 counterpart). He is able to carry all three Autobot Brothers when in "carrier mode". In robot mode, Magnus is a rather towering figure due to his oddly long legs (made up of the carrier component to vehicle mode). His "Blue Bolts" weapon can be configured into three different modes and, when plugged into the proper connectors, generate different sound effects. A button on his back also allows for an additional shout from Magnus (in either Japanese or English, depending on the version of the toy). The Japanese release is slightly different in that it uses different missiles, lacks tampographed Autobot symbols on the sides, and features darker, metallic-flaked plastics. Magnus can combine with the large Robots in Disguise Optimus Prime toy to create Omega Prime.

:This black repaint of Ultra Magnus is hugely rare, to the extent that its very existence is occasionally questioned. Only ten units are known to exist, having been offered in a TV Magazine prize draw that seemed to slip under everyone's radar. The figure would later be included in a "Black God Fire Convoy" giftset with Black Super Fire Convoy.
*Black God Fire Convoy (Giftset, 2000)
:This two-figure giftset includes the Black God Magnus figure, plus the black version of the Optimus figure (itself only available through contests and raffles, although in significantly larger numbers than Magnus had been), who together combine to form Black God Fire Convoy. It was just as limited in its availablity as the original Black God Magnus figure, with the only ten units known to exist being offered as prizes in a scratch-card contest that TV Magazine run until early November 2000.
**Accessories: Matrix Blade
:This two-figure giftset includes a unique clear version of the Ultra Magnus figure not available anywhere else, paired with the Clear Super Fire Convoy that had previously been available through other contests, who together combine to form Clear God Fire Convoy. The set also included the Matrix Blade sword, which had previously been available only through various contests and raffles.

:The giftset was exclusive to Japanese Toys"R"Us stores. Released in November 2000, it was limited to 3000 pieces; reportedly, only 100 TRUs carried the set, and limited customers to one purchase on the day of release.

:A simplified, smaller version of Ultra Magnus at the basic price point. It has room for one Spychanger on the top of the carrier mode, such as the smaller versions of Side Burn and X-Brawn, but, of course, they are wildly out of scale with each other. The toy has a surprising amount of articulation for a Spychanger, with joints for the head, shoulders and legs. (Magnus Split action!) He only has 4 moving wheels; the rest are molded in.
**Accessories: "Blue Bolts" cannon, 2 missiles

: The Sam's Club exclusive Ultra Magnus was more-or-less unchanged from its Robots in Disguise counterpart, with the only noticeable difference being that his dark blue parts had become a much darker blue.

Fiction
Cybertron cartoon continuity
When Megatron returned as a ghost after his defeat in the fire dimension, the black fog, revealed to be Unicron's shadow spark, that surrounds him ensnare Leobreaker, creating Nemesis Breaker, a sparkless clone of base animal instincts. Megatron claimed that the beast was created out of Leobreaker's anger and jealousy over Optimus Prime's preference of selling the latest toy that combines with him... er, that is, the latest team member that gives him a new powered-up mode. Darkness (episode)

When Megatron got his ass beat down bad by Metroplex, Nemesis Breaker disappeared, presumably into a plot hole, though it's curious that whatever happened to him didn't have any effect on Crumplezone, who had recently been brought back from death's door as Dark Crumplezone by the use of the same mystery doodah that Megatron made Nemesis Breaker out of. Giant

Later, when Megatron tapped into the Gigantion Cyber Planet Key and upgraded into the über-powerful Galvatron shortly afterwards, it seems he didn't care enough to recreate Nemesis Breaker.

Toys
Cybertron
* Nemesis Breaker (Voyager-class, 2005/2006)
**Japanese ID number: EX-01
**Accessories: Tail/whip, Jungle Planet-type Cyber Key

: A redeco of Leobreaker in the typical-to-evil-clones scheme of black and dark gray with turquoise trim, Nemesis Breaker transforms into a robotic lion with electronic sounds. Plugging a Cyber Planet Key into each of his forelegs/forearms flips down a pair of claws. He can also form something resembling a clawed arm that can be attached to the Cybertron Leader-Class Optimus Prime and Megatron molds. He comes with a silver-bordered Jungle Planet style Cyber Key; the Hasbro version has the Key code "v6f5".

: The Takara version of the toy was released first, as a Toys 'R' Us exclusive. (It was originally solicited as a normal retail release with the ID number "GD-14", but supposedly, low sales of Galaxy Force forced several larger show-toys into being exclusives.) The Hasbro version was released at normal retail, and had numerous small paint application changes, most notably the Decepticon-sigil "tattoo" being on his right shoulder, rather than left.

: This mold was used as the model for the non-toy body for the Generation 1 Predacon Razorclaw in the "Dawn of Future's Past" comic book.

Trivia
* The television CGI model of Nemesis Breaker used during the combiner sequence animation, as well as the representation of the combined arm mode is based upon a modified version of one of the original prototypes of Leobreaker, who had a much more complex and believable 'arm-mode'.

* Despite his packaging marking him as being from the Jungle Planet, Nemesis Breaker never even so much as set foot on that world. Also, the bio states that he was created by Galvatron, whom Megatron did not (re-)assume until AFTER Nemesis Breaker is wiped out in a highly pathetic way.

*The only times he's actually in Robot Mode that does not involve Dark Claw transformation is in the episodes Escape and Warp.
