:Devil Z is a super-energy being from the Super-God Masterforce portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

The origins of the self-styled "Decepticon God" Devil Z are shrouded in mystery. Seemingly lacking any corporeal form, he exists purely as a pulsating globe of iridescent energy and is only ever identified as a "super-energy being" hailing from the far reaches of the galaxy. As the "Führer of Darkness" (闇の総統 Yami no Sōtō), he commands the Decepticons on Earth, via his "Ambassador of Destruction", Overlord, and the main Decepticon force in space, through his brainwashed servant, BlackZarak. Although he almost always acts through his pawns, rarely dirtying his own hands (er, metaphorically speaking), he is terrifyingly powerful in his own right, able to generate enough energy to devastate a planet with his Devil Power.

Devil Z's goal is creation of the ultimate lifeform, the Godmaster, which he sought to accomplish by fusing Transformers and human beings into one, thereby creating a lifeform that could wield all three aspects of Chōkon Power. To this end, he stole a collection of eight Transtectors from the G Nebula, and spirited them away across time and space to Earth. With the Transtectors scattered across the planet, Devil Z entered a deep slumber at the bottom of an ocean trench, awakening in the early years of the 21st century to begin his plan. Devil Z quickly built his army by capturing and brainwashing the current Decepticon leader Scorponok (who had just recreated himself as BlackZarak) and liberating the Decepticon Pretenders from the Earthly prisons their Autobot counterparts had sealed them in epochs beforehand, and then recruited a pair of humans named Giga and Mega. Devil Z merged these two humans to the largest of the Transtectors, transforming them into Overlord, the first of the Godmasters, and charged them with locating the remaining Transtectors hidden across Earth.
While Giga and Mega were busy conducting their search for the Godmaster Transtectors, Devil Z resided in the underwater base occupied by the Pretenders, perched atop a tentacled dais from which he silently regarded his subjects. When Blood called upon his power to animate the first wave of Destroids {{storylink|Terror!
After Giga and Mega successfully located and trained the first new Godmasters, Hydra and Buster, he brought his two sets of troops together in his underwater base. Super Warriors - The Godmaster Brothers A Fierce Battle!! The Autobots Are in Trouble The first major obstruction in Devil Z's plan came not long after, when the Autobots recruited a Godmaster of their own, Ginrai. A Hero Is Chosen - His Name Is Ginrai Devil Z was finally heard to speak when he vowed that no more Godmasters would become Autobots, and ordered Ginrai's destruction. Eliminate the Godmaster Ginrai Unfortunately for Devil Z, what he had failed to realize was that all the remaining Transtectors he had stolen had been intended for Autobot use, and consequently, the human beings who merged with them all allied with the Autobots, thwarting his attempt to increase his army. Lightfoot: A Dramatic Encounter {{storylink|An Enemy?
This failure did not sit well with Devil Z, who summoned BlackZarak back to Earth, only to have him forced back into space by Ginrai after a dramatic battle on the moon. God Ginrai - Showdown on the Surface of the Moon However, during this prolonged stay in space, BlackZarak mastered localised gravity manipulation, allowing him to create black holes which he used to teleport himself directly to Earth. Once there, he and the other Decepticons enacted Devil Z's "Operation M-1", rampaging across the planet until the Autobots stopped them. BlackZarak - Destroyer from Space

Having now witnessed the untapped potential for power within human beings, Devil Z formulated "Operation M-2"—the complete destruction of humankind through use of the atmosphere-destroying "Death Para-Machine". The Autobots yet again foiled his plan and destroyed the Death Para-Machine, but the willingness of their emperor to wipe out mankind had already planted a seed of doubt within the minds of Giga and Mega. {{storylink|Crisis!

Not long thereafter, when the Autobots invaded the Decepticon base, an outraged Devil Z played his trump card. Declaring that he would now reveal his true form to the assembled Autobots and Decepticons, Devil Z exploded with light, transforming first into a bizarre embryonic creature, and then into a sinister crimson mist that flowed into BlackZarak. Now in control of the powerful Decepticon's body and mind, Devil Z promptly collapsed the Decepticon base in a failed attempt to destroy the Autobots. The Ultimate Combination!! BlackZarak, the New Lifeform Subsequently, the Decepticons relocated to the Amazon, where the hybrid Devil Z/BlackZarak entity announced his intention to revisit his plan to wipe out mankind. Again, Giga voiced his concern over the drastic nature of the plan, but again, Devil Z ignored him, driving the wedge between the alien and his servant even further. As it turned out, Devil Z's contempt for flesh was even shared by Hydra and Buster, who petitioned Devil Z to purge them of their humanity and merge them completely with their Transtectors so that they could become purely robotic lifeforms. Devil Z complied, and the newly-robotic Hydra and Buster were sent to battle Ginrai while Devil Z unleashed his Devil Power on a devastating attack on North America. Battle to the Death!! God Ginrai VS Darkwings Reborn When the Autobots arrived to stop him, Devil Z responded by turning his Devil Power on the four former Decepticons who had since joined up with the Autobots—Wilder, Bullhorn, Cancer and Clouder—separating them from their Transtectors and bringing the robotic bodies to life as true super-robot lifeforms. Autobots! Desperate Attack!!

For Devil Z's final attack on Earth, he moved the Decepticons to the peak of the Matterhorn in the Alps and unleashed his Devil Power over Europe. The Autobots again gave chase, and Ginrai once again bested Hydra and Buster in combat, leading the enraged Devil Z to take out his frustrations on the two brothers. As he lashed them with his spear and blasted them with energy beams, Overlord finally spoke out against his emperor, but his concern for his subordinate was met only with contempt. Able to bear no more, Overlord attempted to strike Devil Z, but was cut down by the giant Decepticon, and would have been destroyed had Ginrai not arrived in time to save him. Devil Z was kept busy by Sixknight while Ginrai got Overlord to safety, and by the time he had destroyed the Six Changer, Ginrai had returned to the mountain peak to face off against him. Malevolent and Inhuman! The True Form of Devil Z Uninterested in fighting Ginrai, Devil Z transformed BlackZarak to scorpion mode and attempted to depart, intending to head for Antarctica, where he had already planted an amplifier for his Devil Power that would allow him to eliminate mankind with ease. Ginrai, of course, did not let him leave without a fight, dragging him back down to the mountain and prompting Devil Z to inflict the ultimate punishment: he unleashed his Devil Power on Ginrai, intent on transforming him into a true robot as he had done with Hydra and Buster, removing from him the humanity he so coveted. Thankfully, Ginrai was rescued by Grand Maximus, and his revenge was swift, as he punched BlackZarak's head clean off his shoulders.

The Autobots' believed that Devil Z was down, but the loss of his host's head did little to impede the alien's evil, and he simply transformed BlackZarak's body into a new serpentine form to continue the fight. At that point, Overlord appeared and opened fire on his leader, and Devil Z responded by killing Giga and Mega and bringing the Overlord Transtector to life as a true robot. Furious at the unrepentant evil of Devil Z, Ginrai merged his powers with those of the Autobot Headmaster Juniors, and unleashed a super-charged version of his God Fire Guts attack upon the villain, reducing BlackZarak's body to ashes. Without a host to contain it, the energy orb of Devil Z coalesced in front of Ginrai once more, growing to enormous size and raging impotently that the Godmasters were tools that would never be able to defeat their maker. Defiantly, Ginrai and the Juniors summoned up every ounce of their energy for the "Final Fire Guts" attack, and Ginrai dove like a flaming spear into the heart of Devil Z, who screamed and exploded in a coruscating wave of light and darkness.

At the sight of Devil Z's death, the surviving Decepticons immediately turned tail and fled into space. The aliens' death also severed the bond he had forged between the humans and their Transtectors, and the Autobots found themselves separated from their robot bodies. The Autobot Transtectors were brought to life, and they pursued the surviving Decepticons back into space. A Battle... and Then...

Devil Z came into contact with Giga and Mega when the couple drowned at sea, and he elected to use his powers to resurrect them as his emissaries and servants. The Birth of the Super Lifeforms At first, he left most of the work up to them, clinging to the shadows, handing down commands without ever being seen, and being spoken of only rarely by his subordinates. Exactly where he was based was never revealed; he does not appear to have remained on Earth after awakening.

When the Decepticons' attempt to defeat the Autobots with holograms of legendary Decepticons from years past failed, Buster inquired if there were any real troops they could call on, and Giga announced that they would have to wait for Devil Z's order. Burn, Super Soul! The New Commander Super Ginrai! The order came soon, as he instructed the Decepticons on Earth to join forces with the space-based Decepticon forces and attack the Autobots on Athenia. During the ensuing battle, Devil Z's existence was revealed to the Autobots when the Decepticons boasted that they had all been united under his rule. The Battle Begins! The United Earth-Space Troops

Devil Z proceeded to upgrade BlackZarak's powers, Decepticons' Great Counterattack! and brought the giant Decepticon back to Earth. After several further failures on the Decepticons' part, Devil Z took matters into his own hands, transforming Buster and Hydra into true robots, and possessing BlackZarak's body, positioning his glowing orb between the Decepticon's shoulders in place of his actual head. In this form, Devil Z appeared during a battle between Ginrai and the other Decepticons, and transformed BlackZarak's body into a new serpentine mode as everyone looked on in shock. Devil Z then turned on the other Decepticons, and attempted to drain theirs and Ginrai's Jinchōkon, intending to absorb it and thereby transform himself into the ultimate lifeform. His absorption beam was blocked by the sudden arrival of the wholly-robotic Autobot Pretenders, saving Ginrai and the Decepticons from a nasty fate, and the Decepticons all decided to join with the Autobots to defeat their treacherous former master. Climbing aboard Grand Maximus, all the Transformers united their energies in the "Perfect Transform Attack", and the super-charged Grand Maximus charged into Devil Z, destroying him and BlackZarak for good in a blinding explosion of pure Chōkon Power.

The death of Devil Z resulted in the bond he had forged between the humans and their Transtectors being severed, causing the humans to be separated from their robot bodies, and the Transtectors to come to life as true super-robot lifeforms. Additionally, his destruction caused the energies sustaining Giga and Mega to cease, and they died along with him. The now-living Autobot and Decepticon Transtectors resolved to take their war back into space, where they would rejoin their respective factions and continue their conflict. The Birth of the Super Lifeforms
Trivia
* BlackZarak would later be resurrected by the supernatural Violen Jiger for the events of the Zone anime and manga. Whether or not he was revived with Devil Z's consciousness or his own original mind was never expounded upon, but it seems unlikely that Violen Jiger would have taken that risk.
* Devil Z's name is pronounced with the Commonwealth "zed", rather than the American "zee". Or if you were feeling particularly weeabooish, you could pronounce it "zeddo".
* Devil Z holds the…unique honor of being the only Decepticon big bad to have a song dedicated to him: Uchū no Shihaisha - Devil Z (宇宙の支配者・デビルZ "Ruler of the Universe — Devil Z"). This "image song" was originally sold on a Masterforce soundtrack disk in 1988, and was recently re-issued on both the Transformers History of Music 1984-1990 and Transformers Song Universe 5-disk sets. The song was performed by Toshiya Igarashi, who also performed the intro and ending songs for Masterforce. Just in case you weren't clear on how evil he was, the song opens with a screaming refrain of "BAD BAD BAD!" Because…y'know, he's bad.
* Due to the events of Masterforce, the BlackZarak toy also doubles as a Devil Z toy. But then, so does a plasma ball, or even steam from a kettle...

A Battle... and Then...

Super-God Masterforce comic

But then, so does steam from a kettle, and blinking Christmas tree lights...

Synopsis
Continuing to hopscotch around the globe as they pursue the Decepticons, the Autobots set Grand Maximus down at the foot of Mount McKinley in Alaska. While Ginrai hands out orders, Cancer attempts to prevent Wilder and Bullhorn from leaving. Despite having been rescued by Ginrai after being left to certain death thanks to Devil Z, the two punks have no designs on becoming Autobots like Cancer. There is a hint of doubt in Bullhorn’s eyes, but Wilder pushes Cancer out of his way and orders Bullhorn to follow him. The Autobot Headmaster Juniors arrive to try and convince them, but the pair board their Transtectors and depart. Ginrai tries to console the tearful Cancer, telling him that he must believe that they will come to understand the friendship they share.

Meanwhile, with their base destroyed, the Decepticons have relocated to the jungles of the Amazon. There, Devil Z, now inhabiting the body of BlackZarak, announces his intent to revisit his plan of wiping out humanity on Earth, this time using his own powers. Giga again voices his concern over this excessive course of action, but Devil Z silences him. Giga stalks off in rage, vowing to do things his own way. Hydra and Buster, on the other hand, have come to a different conclusion regarding Humanity. They believe that they are weakened by their human bodies, and that is why they have thus far been unable to defeat Ginrai. They petition Devil Z to use his powers to recreate them as wholly robotic beings, and the alien complies, using his "Devil Power" to fuse the brothers with their Transtectors. They reveal their new forms to a horrified Giga and Mega, and Devil Z then orders the Decepticons to begin their next attack.

Soon, news of bizarre disasters all over America reaches the Autobots, and Ginrai realizes that these reports—involving the obliteration of cities by devastating purple lightning—are the work of the Decepticons. (Duh.) Grand Maximus traces this "Devil Thunder" to the Grand Canyon, and the Autobots immediately roll out. Leaving the Godmasters to help in the disaster areas, Ginrai and the Headmaster Juniors venture into the Grand Canyon, where Ginrai is promptly attacked by the reborn Hydra and Buster. The brothers display the new abilities their forms grant them by blasting him with beams of "Devil Power," but Ginrai fights back, appalled at what they have done to themselves.

At the same time, the Juniors and Godbomber come under attack from a swarm of Krakens and Sparkdash drones, but when Godbomber detects that Ginrai is in trouble, the Juniors instruct him to go to their commander's aid. With their numbers reduced, things look bad for the Juniors... until the surprising arrival of Wilder and Bullhorn! With the aid of their former enemies, the Juniors defeat the Decepticon drones, and Cancer is overjoyed to have his friends beside him once more.

Meanwhile, Godbomber speeds to the aid of Ginrai, and the pair fuse into God Ginrai to battle the brothers in the form of Darkwings. With a defiant cry, Ginrai subjects the brothers to massive blast of the power their loss of humanity means they will never be able to use again – Jinchōkon Power! Hydra and Buster take the blast, and return with the flaming "Hellfire Attack," diving right at Ginrai, who activates his God Fire Guts and collides with the Decepticons at high speed, causing a colossal explosion. All the combatants emerge from the blast smoking and scarred, and Hydra and Buster pull out, declaring the bout a draw. The Juniors soon arrive at Ginrai’s side, but there will be no respite for the wounded warrior, as, out of the stormy skies, Overlord descends...
While his transtector is not as big as that of his brother's, he's not that small.
Synopsis
Now that the Autobots have foiled their plans to attack the Earth from space, the Decepticons have begun a series of ground assaults across the planet. As Overlord blasts his way through the southern half of Europe, he meets resistance from Lightfoot, while Ranger contends with Hydra and Buster in northern half of the continent, and the Autobot and Decepticon Pretenders battle in Latin America.

The Decepticon Headmaster Juniors, meanwhile, have been left to sit around the Decepticon base reading and playing cards. Bullhorn voices his concern over Devil Z’s new, deranged plan to wipe out Mankind, but Wilder brushes it off, remarking that in becoming a Decepticon, he’s already sold his soul and has few concerns for the lives of others now. This rather merciless outlook surprises Bullhorn, and he asks Cancer’s opinion, but the youngest Junior is lost in thought and doesn’t reply, until Wilder announces that BlackZarak is about to attack China, Cancer’s home country. Horrified, Cancer (with Browning in tow) races from the base in a helicopter and returns to his hometown in China, where he attempts to encourage the populace to evacuate. Rather than listen to his warnings, though, the crowds simply run from him. Amongst the fleeing crowd members, Cancer spots an old friend of his named Chang and disembarks from his Transtector to greet the boy. The meeting between the two friends is a happy one, and Chang is only too willing to listen to the warning Cancer brings, but the mood darkens when Cancer suggests that they go to their old sensei for help, and Chang is forced to reveal that the old man died six months prior. Cancer’s sensei, it is revealed, had raised Cancer as if he were his own son after Cancer was orphaned, and when Cancer left his dojo to join the Decepticons, he fell ill, thinking Cancer had turned from him. The pair travel to the dojo, where the distraught Cancer cannot even grieve for long before he is attacked by two of the dojo’s pupils, who blame him for everything. Browning flattens the thugs, and he and Cancer prepare to clear out before BlackZarak’s attack, but as they return to Cancer’s Transtector, Road King steps out from behind it. The Autobot Godmaster has been on patrol in the area and overheard Cancer’s story. He attempts to empathise with the boy, but the angry Cancer opens fire on him with Browning, boards his Transtector, and runs.

At the same time, Lightfoot’s struggle with Overlord worsens, prompting Ginrai to take off for Europe with the Autobot Headmaster Juniors. As they are en route, Road King radios Ginrai to inform him of the situation. While Shūta and Cab never waste an opportunity to rag on Cancer, accusing him of lying, Minerva is once again given cause to voice her feelings that he’s not as bad as the other Decepticons.

At the edge of a river, Cancer sadly reflects on his lot in life. He realizes now that he has no place among his old friends, and that the only home he has is with the Decepticons...at which point, BlackZarak erupts out of the river and begins destroying the city! Cancer attempts to appeal to him, but BlackZarak continues to fire, not caring whether or not he hits his fellow Decepticon, and Cancer realizes there truly is nothing he can do. About to depart, Cancer’s attention is caught by cries of help from Chang, who has been trapped in a burning building while looking for him. Cancer transforms to robot mode and lifts them to safety, but is then struck from behind by a stray blast from BlackZarak and knocked to the ground. As he struggles to get up, a building collapses on top of him, and he is trapped beneath the rubble.

Meanwhile, Road King alerts Ginrai to the situation in China, and Ginrai radios Ranger to reinforce Lightfoot while he heads in to deal with BlackZarak. Ginrai arrives just in time to save Road King from becoming a smear on BlackZarak’s claws, and the Headmaster Juniors roll out to perform their usual rescue duties. While searching the streets, however, they are approached by Browning, who pleads for them to save Cancer from the wreckage. Shūta and Cab, of course, is only too happy to let Cancer rot, and a furious Minerva starts digging him out herself. Ginrai instructs the two boys to help her, and before long, they have unearthed Cancer, whose gratitude extends as far as telling them not to butt in where they weren’t wanted. When they tell him that they freed him on Ginrai’s order, however, he falls silent with surprise...

At the same time, Ginrai and Road King’s clash with BlackZarak takes a turn when a new type of Decepticon is summoned into battle—the fire-breathing Sparkdash! Dodging jets of flame, the two Godmasters return fire. Fortunately, the Sparkdash prove to be just as fragile as Seacons, and they explode quite easily. At this point, Devil Z instructs Overlord to pull out of the battle in Europe and aid BlackZarak, and the Ambassador of Destruction races to China to join the fight there. As the fight continues, the combatants find themselves on top of the Headmaster Juniors, and Ginrai ceases fighting to protect them. Overlord is about to open fire when Shūta cries out that Cancer is buried, and a shocked Overlord lowers his weapon. BlackZarak has no such compunction, but with his number of active opponents reduced to one, Ginrai is able to use the God Cannon to push BlackZarak back. Then he seizes the shocked Overlord, flying him into the sky and pile-driving him down right on top of BlackZarak. The two Decepticons are badly wounded, and Devil Z instructs them to retreat.

After some brief celebrations, the Autobots finish extracting Cancer from the rubble, and the young Decepticon asks why they saved him. Ginrai replies that it was because Cancer tried to save the people of his hometown, proving that, like the Autobots and unlike his fellow Decepticons, he has a heart. The Autobots allow Cancer to leave peacefully, and he boards his helicopter and flies away with a sad, lingering look back.
Notes
Transformers references
* After not touching on the sub-plot for a while, this episode sees the series swing some focus back on Minerva and Cancer’s unusual friendship, which began back in “A Strange Friendship: Cancer and Minerva”.

* Cancer refers to his “Super Dragon Fist” attack, which we saw in “A Fierce Battle!! The Autobots Are in Trouble”.

Miscellaneous trivia
* The Sparkdash are the Japanese equivalent of the Firecons. However, while the Sparkdash toys sport different color schemes to the Firecons, the animated series consistently colors them in the Firecons’ hues.
