The Seven Primes were the seven original leaders of Cybertron. Each possessed a form which differed greatly from their descendants. They traveled the galaxy looking for suns from which they could harvest Energon. However, they tempered their search for energy by vowing they would never take a life in its pursuit.

One of their number was The Fallen.

In 16,000 B.C., ancient beings known as the Seven Primes reached a solar system in their quest to build a Solar harvester that would replenish their race's life enery. However, they discovered the chosen system contained a life-bearing world, and so six of the Primes objected to using the harvester on the system's sun. The seventh, however, insisted on using the harvester anyway, and turned on his brothers and their creed, attacking them and slaughtering many of the world's semi-sapient creatures. He was thereafter ever known as The Fallen. The remaining Primes battled off the Fallen and hid the Matrix of Leadership, without which he could not activate the harvester, in a tomb composed of their own bodies.

In the present day, their descendant Optimus Prime perished in battle whilst protecting to the human adolescent Sam Witwicky, the chosen one of the All Spark Cube and the six Primes. With the confusing knowledge of an alien civilization in his mind, Sam and his companions set out to find the Matrix of Leadership after learning it may be the only thing that could resurrect the last of the Primes, who was the only being who could defeat The Fallen. Travelling to Petra in Jordan, Sam discovered the Tomb of the Primes hidden inside, but when he touched the Matrix, it crumbled into dust. Nevertheless, he held onto his faith and gathered up the dust, intending to revive Optimus with it somehow.

During the climatic battle around the Solar harvester between the Autobots and The Fallen's Decepticons, Sam sacrificed his life in an attempt to use the remnants of the Matrix to resurrect Optimus Prime. As he left his body, the six Primes appeared to Sam in a vision, telling him that they had been observing him for a long time, and pronounced him worthy of receiving the Matrix, that which is not found, but earned. Sam's soul was sent back into his body, and he was able to fulfill his destiny by reviving Optimus Prime, bringing about the defeat of The Fallen. Revenge of the Fallen (film)
Trivia
*A Sentinel Prime mentioned during Sam's rapid-fire, All Spark-induced lecture in class may have been one of these Primes.
*In the novelization and comic adaptation, Jetfire explains that there were Thirteen Primes, and The Fallen killed eleven of them, with the twelth Prime sacrificing his spark to seal the Matrix in the Tomb.
