Wheeljack was a member of the Wreckers black ops. After the [[Great Exodus]], the Autobots remaining on Cybertron encountered the inventor and engineer wandering outside [[Crystal City]]. They took him in, with [[Alpha Trion (Prime)|Alpha Trion]] theorizing that he had escaped from [[Shockwave (WFC)|Shockwave]]'s facilities there. Eventually he reached [[Earth]]'s [[Solar System]] and was hailed by the Autobots stationed there, including Bulkhead. As he was coming in to land at the coordinates provided by [[Optimus Prime (Prime)|Optimus Prime]], his ship was attacked and shot down by [[Vehicon (Prime)|Vehicons]]. Wheeljack emerged from the ''Jackhammer'' and proceeded to trash the Decepticons, but was eventually overwhelmed and taken back to the ''[[Trypticon (Prime)|Nemesis]]'' where he was imprisoned. He was amused to find that [[Starscream (Prime)|Starscream]] was in command of the Decepticons, and almost goaded Starscream into killing him.

An opportunity allowed him to kill his guard and break free from his bonds. He scaled to the top of the ship, where Starscream was waiting for [[Makeshift (Prime)|Makeshift]], who'd taken on Wheeljack's appearance, to open the Autobot [[GroundBridge]]. Wheeljack smashed a bunch of Vehicons and assaulted Starscream before escaping through the GroundBridge to the [[Autobot Outpost Omega One|Autobot base]]. There he confronted Makeshift and the pair dueled with swords until Wheeljack was victorious. Bulkhead tossed Makeshift back through the GroundBridge along with a "present" for the 'cons.

Though the Autobots welcomed Wheeljack, he revealed that he intended to return to space. He invited Bulkhead along, but Bulkhead was too attached to his friends on Earth to leave. Bulkhead was sure Wheeljack would return someday... {{storylink|Con Job}}

When Miko was trying to stir Bulkhead's memory after he absorbed the data from the [[Cybertronian data cylinder]] she mentioned Wheeljack, and showed Bulkhead the picture she took of them together before he left. Sadly, this did not jog Bulkhead's memory. {{storylink|T.M.I.}}

During his travels, Wheeljack made contact with fellow Wrecker [[Seaspray (Prime)|Seaspray]] only for [[Dreadwing (Prime)|Dreadwing]] to destroy Seaspray's ship. Wheeljack chased Dreadwing to Earth where they battled near a gas station, which was destroyed in the conflict as [[Optimus Prime (Prime)|Optimus Prime]]'s team arrived. Filling the other Autobots in, Wheeljack found himself chafing over the need for secrecy. When Dreadwing called him to arrange a meeting, Wheeljack took Bulkhead to try and trap the Decepticon. The encounter instead left Wheeljack buried.

Once Optimus dug him out, he accompanied the Autobot leader to the port where Bulkhead had been taken by Dreadwing and attempted to remove the bomb the Decepticon had placed on his comrade. Eventually he was forced to concede only Dreadwing could remove the bomb, and he and Optimus played a gambit that forced Dreadwing's hand. Convinced to stay on Earth by the other Autobots, Wheeljack adopted a new alternate mode and drove off to explore the planet. {{storylink|Loose Cannons}}

As the Autobots split up to retrieve the four new Iacon relics, Optimus told Ratchet that he'd need Wheeljack's help for the mission ahead. Remembering his past experiences with the Wrecker, Ratchet was naturally reluctant to go through with the idea, but Optimus reminded the medic that he would need a capable warrior like Wheeljack to watch his back. {{storylink|Triangulation}}

Ratchet rendezvoused with Wheeljack by the ''Jackhammer'', and they headed out in the ship to find the relic. Wheeljack quickly got on Ratchet's nerve by calling him "doc" and "sunshine" but soon encountered [[Soundwave (Prime)|Soundwave]]. The Wrecker engaged Soundwave in a dog fight using some fancy aerial flight moves, but against the advice of Ratchet, Wheeljack let Soundwave go and attacked [[Laserbeak (Prime)|Laserbeak]]. After a lengthy dog fight, Wheeljack shot the [[Mini-Con]] down, but the ''Jackhammer'' was also disabled. On the ground Wheeljack found Laserbeak and suggested planting a grenade inside of the Mini-Con to kill Soundwave, but Ratchet had a better idea: A virus which would download the entire Iacon data base into their systems.

While Ratchet set about implanting the virus into Laserbeak, Wheeljack went after Soundwave, soon locating and attacking the Decepticon. Though he almost got the upper hand, Soundwave hit him with the [[Resonance Blaster]], and Wheeljack barely had time to warn Ratchet before falling unconscious. Despite the damage, Wheeljack refused to return to base for treatment and instead set about fixing his ship. ==Synopsis==
With other teams dispatched to find relics, [[Megatron (Prime)|Megatron]] visits the [[Insecticon (Prime)|Insecticon]] hive and calls for a volunteer. [[Hardshell]] steps forward and Megatron sends him and three others to find the fourth and final relic. The four Insecticons arrive in a volcanic region on the equator and immediately split up.

At the Autobot base, [[Bulkhead (Prime)|Bulkhead]] watches [[Miko Nakadai|Miko]] leave [[Jack Darby|with]] [[Bumblebee (Prime)|her]] [[Arcee (Prime)|team]] before he is dispatched to the area at the equator. Though he arrives at the correct coordinates, there's no relic there, but his search is interrupted by the approach of Hardshell. The Insecticon attacks Bulkhead and, after a brief exchange of words, the pair fight. Although he takes a few hits, the Wrecker flattens Hardshell, knocking a mandible off the Insecticon in the process. Bulkhead then heads downhill, realizing that an old lava flow may have taken the relic in the same direction. He keeps [[William Fowler|Agent Fowler]] updated back at base via radio. Meanwhile, Hardshell comes to and heads off with the other Insecticons to find their target.

Though leaking energon from his fight, Bulkhead manages to find the relic. Unfortunately, it turns out to be a toxic form of [[Energon]] known as [[Tox-En]], which Megatron could refine into a lethal bioweapon. Though Fowler suggests bringing it to base, Bulkhead realizes that he's going to have to dispose of it himself, "Wrecker style". Hardshell and the other Insecticons find the vessel shortly after, but as one of them goes to grab the small piece of Tox-En within, the grenade Bulkhead left behind explodes, leaving him fatally riddled with Tox-En shrapnel. Hardshell lets Megatron know about the Tox-En, but Megatron wants to know why Hardshell doesn't have the stuff yet.

Bulkhead, meanwhile, runs away from the volcano with the rest of the Tox-En, leaving a trail of leaking energon to throw off the Insecticons. As he turns and starts to head up the volcano, Bulkhead strikes up a conversation with Fowler about their past war-time careers and discovers they've more in common than they'd previously thought. However, as Bulkhead continues his journey, he begins to feel the effects of the toxic energon and almost succumbs to its spark-sapping properties. After Agent Fowler convinces him to keep going for the sake of duty and family, namely Miko, Bulkhead trudges on.

Meanwhile, Hardshell figures out the false trail, and he and the other Insecticons fly uphill. They catch up to Bulkhead, who has just arrived at the volcano's mouth, and surround him. Bulkhead throws a grenade at one Insecticon and jabs the Tox-En into Hardshell. The third Insecticon charges in bug mode, but Bulkhead decks it with the Tox-En and jabs the chunk into its shell before turning back to face Hardshell. Receiving the news that Miko is safe, Bulkhead begins sparring with Hardshell, though they are both now weakened from the toxic energon. Though Hardshell manages to get the better of Bulkhead, as he moves to finish the Wrecker off, Bulkhead works up the strength to throw Hardshell over to the Tox-En before flinging the monster towards a hole in the caldera crust leading down into the molten lava. Bulkhead then throws the Tox-En to Hardshell, and the dizzied Insecticon falls into the volcano, destroying the toxic relic. As Bulkhead heads for the [[GroundBridge]], Hardshell climbs out of the volcano and shoots the Autobot in the back, sending him flying through the GroundBridge to land within the Autobot base, his back burning. Ratchet, Raf, and Fowler see the smoke coming out of Bulkhead and run to his aid.

* After Hardshell punches Bulkhead during their first fight, the latter's cannons transform into maces without the usual sound effects.
* In the establishing shot of the Tox-En before the commercial break, there are two samples in the container; the larger one which Bulkhead takes with him, and the smaller one he leaves as a booby trap. After the commercial break, the same shot shows only the larger sample.
* When Megatron receives Hardshell's report on the Tox-En, [[Soundwave (Prime)|Soundwave]] is standing behind him, with his visor undamaged. This clashes with the continuity of the arc; Soundwave should either be absent from the ship (if he's still embroiled in his relic hunt) or sporting a cracked visor from his battle with [[Wheeljack (Prime)|Wheeljack]], as a later scene in this episode indicates that [[Knock Out (Prime)|Knock Out]] is still on his own relic hunt.

===Continuity errors===
* In "[[Triangulation]]", Bulkhead is shown running through the GroundBridge for his mission. However, in this episode he is shown just walking through the bridge.
* It has been shown previously that Insecticons have blasters in their beetle mode (and, as Hardshell demonstrates at the end of the episode, in robot mode), and they show awareness of Tox-En's debilitating effects on their bodies... so why don't any of them try attacking Bulkhead from range, reducing the risk of Tox-En exposure? Even if they're trying to avoid hitting the Tox-En, they could certainly at least flank Bulkhead and attack from opposite sides.
* As Fowler tries to contact Bulkhead during the battle in the volcano's caldera, we see Ratchet and Raf downloading the Iacon database in the background (as seen in [[Triage|the previous episode]]). However, when the same scene was shown in "Triage", Fowler was silent for the duration of Ratchet and Raf's conversation.

===Continuity notes===
* This is the final episode of the four-part relic-hunting arc, all four parts of which happen concurrently. This episode focuses on Bulkhead and Fowler. Fowler's handling of [[Vogel]] in "[[Tunnel Vision]]" and the Antarctic research base in "[[Triangulation]]" are shown from his point of view. Raf is also seen programming the virus that Ratchet installs in [[Laserbeak (Prime)|Laserbeak]] in "[[Triage]]". The ending scene is the same as in "Triage".
* The room currently occupied by the Insecticon hive was previously used to store [[Dark Energon]] way back in "[[Darkness Rising, Part 2]]".
* During Bulkhead's first fight with Hardshell, the Insecticon delivers an attack that looks eerily similar to how [[Starscream (Prime)|Starscream]] killed [[Cliffjumper (Prime)|Cliffjumper]]. The actual hit is obscured (the camera is set behind Hardshell), but it doesn't seem to do any visible damage (although this could be why Bulkhead was leaking energon after the fight).
**At the end of the fight, Bulkhead clocks Hardshell with a wicked uppercut, knocking off one of his mandibles. The scene plays out in a suspiciously similar fashion to how [[Cliffjumper (Prime)|Cliffjumper]] lost one of his horns to a [[Vehicon (Prime)|Vehicon]] in "[[Darkness Rising, Part 1]]"; the mandible even sticks point-first in the ground.

After Wheeljack dogfights with Soundwave for a few minutes, Soundwave releases [[Laserbeak (Prime)|Laserbeak]] to take over the attack on the ship. Wheeljack is more than happy to chase Laserbeak instead, though as they chase the drone, it almost causes them to hit the side of a mountain, much to Ratchet's panic. He finally scores a hit on Laserbeak, but as it goes down, a random shot hits the ''Jackhammer'', bringing the ship down as well.

Ratchet is keen to resume the search for the relic, but Wheeljack spots the downed Laserbeak. They examine it, and Wheeljack hits on the idea of planting a grenade in it to provide the Decepticons with a surprise. It gives Ratchet a better idea—implanting a virus to get them access to the ''[[Trypticon (Prime)|Nemesis]]'' computer and hack the [[Iacon (polity)|Iacon]] database. He contacts base and asks [[Raf Esquivel|Raf]] to prepare a virus. At Raf's suggestion, they implant a grenade into Laserbeak as well to provide a decoy that the Decepticons will find and throw them off the scent of the virus. Wheeljack leaves Ratchet to find Soundwave so he can buy Ratchet time.

Meanwhile, Soundwave has located the relic, the [[Resonance Blaster]], and dug it up. Wheeljack quickly locates him and attacks. They trade blows until Soundwave relieves Wheeljack of a sword and uses his tentacles to throw the Autobot around. Wheeljack manages to use Soundwave's tentacles against each other and cracks the Decepticon's visor with his head. They go flying off the cliff, but Wheeljack finally has Soundwave at his mercy, at least until Soundwave grabs the Resonance Blaster with a tentacle and uses it on Wheeljack.

Ratchet and Raf begin uploading the virus into Laserbeak, but as they need it online to do so, the drone activates and tries to fly off, forcing Ratchet to hold it down. Soundwave is about to finish off Wheeljack when he detects activity from Laserbeak and heads off to investigate. Wheeljack has time to warn Ratchet before falling unconscious, and the virus download finishes in time for Ratchet to hide before Soundwave arrives. After some tense moments, the Decepticon picks up Laserbeak, but appears to be alerted to Ratchet. Soundwave's tentacles venture into Ratchet's hiding place, but as it turns out they're merely after a lost piece of Laserbeak. Having retrieved it, Soundwave heads off back to the ''Nemesis''. Ratchet, unable to raise Wheeljack, goes to help his comrade.

[[Megatron (Prime)|Megatron]] is happy with Soundwave's find, though disappointed at [[Dreadwing (Prime)|Dreadwing]]'s and [[Knock Out (Prime)|Knock Out]]'s performances. Megatron has Knock Out examine Laserbeak and they find the grenade which Knock Out disposes of (after some initial panic). Soundwave returns to working on the Iacon database, where Megatron and Knock Out have a conversation in the back about Soundwave, that he WILL provide the coordinates of the remaining relics. After that, Megatron orders Knock Out to repair Soundwave's vizor. Knock Out frowns at Soundwave secretly.

Returning to the ''Jackhammer'', Ratchet calls for a [[GroundBridge]], having forged a mutual respect with Wheeljack. He bridges back to base, where the computers are busily downloading the Iacon database. However, her primary directive was to protect Cybertron, but since Megatron was Cybertron now, her loyalty was misplaced. Built at the same time as Obsidian, Strika remained silent as [[Thrust (BM)|Thrust]] admired the two new recruits (though she did give him a dirty look). Attacking a topside [[Silverbolt (BW)|Silverbolt]] and [[Nightscream (BM)|Nightscream]], she went after the bat when they split up, grounding him with cannon fire. After they'd barricaded themselves in the Citadel, [[Optimus Primal]] realized they had been herded there, at which point Obsidian contacted them and revealed himself and Strika. Only the timely intervention of [[Botanica (BM)|Botanica]] saved the Maximals, her seeds disrupting the drones' targeting systems. Strika was upset to discover her side's scans of Botanica were drastically incomplete. When Optimus split his team to investigate a vision from the Oracle, Strika was waiting for [[Rattrap]] and Botanica at the Citadel. Ambushing the Maximals, she gave chase but temporarily lost them when they hid in a building. However, it didn't take long to locate them, and she mercilessly attacked Botanica while Rattrap was plugged into a [[Holo-chip|holographic pleasure terminal]]. As Megatron prepared to enact his plan, Strika and Obsidian were assigned to guard the [[Grand Mal]]'s exterior. When the Maximals attempted to enter the Grand Mal, Silverbolt, Cheetor and Nightscream caused some major problems for the two with Rattrap's signature-altering devices—until Strika used one of the devices to send feedback through the other units, allowing the Maximals to be detected. With Megatron's seeming destruction, Obsidian and Strika were at a loss. Offered a place with the Maximals by Cheetor, Strika was incredulous at the notion, but she and Obsidian accepted after a crazed mutant zombie thing tried to scrap her and everyone else present. Thrust slagged them off for this, pointing out they were loyal to everyone and that meant loyal to no one. When Megatron's crazed spark entered the Grand Mal, Obsidian and Strika moved to intercept. It wasn't too successful. However, when Megatron's spark was repolarized and bonded to a Diagnostic Drone, Strika and Obsidian seized him and vacated the premises, swearing their loyalty to Megatron once more: Thrust's words had made an impact on them. They were primitive to the point of barely possessing a sentient consciousness, but surprisingly capable fighters. The way they moved together gave away their nature as combiners even when separate. Even with one of their number dead, the remaining two could combine into a hovering attack mode.

The trio competed in the [[gladiatorial combat|gladiatorial]] [[Tournament of Champions]] when they encountered Megatronus. He allowed them to [[trans-scan|scan]] a vehicle form before attacking. One emerged from a scrapheap as an all-terrain vehicle with magnetic studded tracks and sought a vantage point on the combat pit's wall, while another sprayed acid on Megatronus's shoulder. Megatronus caught the third Insecticon's multiple, vibrobladed hands and tore an arm off, flinging it into the audience and causing havoc.

Taking fire from the other two, Megatronus made the wounded Insecticon fire his own ion cannon into its neck, killing it in an attempt to ensure there would be no combination. He then slammed the acid-spitter to the floor, but it wriggled away and managed to combine with the ATV, wiring itself into girders while blasting and spitting acid at the gladiator. Megatronus transformed and blasted them, before pinning them down in robot mode and smashing them to pieces with two [[energon mace|maces]]. An Insecticon was left in stasis on Cybertron, acting as a Decepticon sentry. It was awakened by [[Jack Darby|Jack]] and [[Arcee (Prime)|Arcee]]'s arrival in [[Kaon]], and began pursuing them. {{storylink|Orion Pax, Part 2}}

As they used the [[Key to Vector Sigma]] to reveal a hidden passage under the city's arena, the Insecticon attacked. Arcee attempted to distract it so that Jack could escape into the newly-revealed entrance, but she was soundly beaten when it slammed her into the arena wall. The Insecticon then tracked Jack to [[Vector Sigma]], but was horrified to see the supercomputer covered in [[scraplet]]s. Jack hurled one of the scraplets at the Insecticon so that they would stop feeding on Vector Sigma, and the rest of the swarm followed it in attacking the larger beast-bot. When [[Starscream (Prime)|Starscream]] was seeking Energon scraps in an old mine, he noticed an Insecticon doing the same, and was surprised that one was on [[Earth]]. Starscream demanded that the Insecticon hand over the Energon it had found, though it instead turned on him and attacked, before [[Airachnid]] called it off. Airachnid had managed to control it, due to their being related. Though Starscream suggested that they all team up to end [[Megatron (Prime)|Megatron]], Airachnid instead ordered the Insecticon to attack him, however he escaped. Sometime later, the Insecticon attacked Megatron as part of Airachnid's trap, refusing to obey him instead. The Insecticon had the upper hand on the Decepticon leader, particularly when Airachnid removed his fusion cannon from the equation, however Megatron eventually triumphed as he beheaded the Insecticon.

As they continued their mission, one of the Insecticons fell prey to a grenade and some [[Tox-En]]. Hardshell and the others were mislead by a false trail left by Bulkhead, but eventually caught up with the Wrecker at the top of a nearby volcano. He managed to acquit himself well against the trio, finishing off one Insecticon and throwing Hardshell and the Tox-En into the volcano. Even with one of their number dead, the remaining two could combine into a hovering attack mode.

He then slammed the acid-spitter to the floor, but it wriggled away and managed to combine with the ATV, wiring itself into girders while blasting and spitting acid at the gladiator. ==Synopsis==
[[Silas]] and three MECH soldiers are searching through a wooded area for a Decepticon. They jump into a web-shrouded ravine, but the three soldiers are snatched from the ground and stuck on one of the webs by [[Airachnid]]. Silas takes a shot at her, but is promptly thrown against a rock wall and webbed there. The Decepticon threatens to eviscerate him for what MECH did to [[Breakdown (Prime)|Breakdown]], but wants his help in finding [[Jack Darby]] and will give them [[Arcee (Prime)|Arcee]].

Jack arrives home with Arcee, to find [[June Darby|his mother]] mad that he's been breaking curfew and neglecting his job and schoolwork. She believes he may have been racing his motorcycle and grounds him for the next few weeks—with no motorcycle use. Arcee says she'll miss Jack during that time, but he points out that if she doesn't stay in the garage, his mom will think he's breaking her rules. Arcee promises she'll try to be back in the garage before his mom gets home each night.

The next day, as Jack's leaving [[KO Burger]], he gets a call from his mother, who is on her way home early to make dinner for him. He frantically contacts Arcee, who's with [[Bumblebee (Prime)|Bumblebee]] in the middle of a fight with some [[Vehicon (Prime)|Vehicon]]s. Arcee leaves Bumblebee to it and [[GroundBridge|bridges]] out. June arrives home to find the garage empty, and she blows up at Jack as he arrives on his bicycle. Arcee bridges into the garage behind her, but this merely results in June thinking one of Jack's friends snuck the motorcycle in. Jack spills all about the Autobots, but when Arcee refuses to transform, Jack's mom asks if he's been hanging out with a science fiction club. She leaves to return to work, the conversation unfinished.

Silas uses images from the black box from Airachnid's ship to track down information on Jack, including the identity of his mother. A MECH vehicle soon arrives to abduct June as she leaves the [[Jasper Hospital|hospital]].

Jack arrives home on his cycle to find Arcee, but no mom. There's a package waiting for him, which turns out to be a MECH communicator. Silas tells the pair that MECH has June, and there are GPS coordinates that will lead them to the temporary MECH facility. Arcee attempts to contact base and gets an instant headache. Silas explains the communicator will scramble her brain as well as Autobot communications. Jack and Arcee follow the communicator's map to a disused factory, where they're met by Silas and a bunch of MECH goons. They race past the MECH guys to look for Jack's mom and instead find Airachnid. Airachnid webs Arcee, who is then zapped by a MECH soldier. The 'Con tells Jack he has until midnight to rescue his mother. Jack tries to plead with Silas for help, but the MECH leader pushes him back. Jack then races off to find his mom, followed by Airachnid. Silas tells his men to start working on Arcee, as he suspects Airachnid will double-cross them.

Jack runs through the factory, but is unable to find June until Airachnid points her out, dangling in a web cocoon from a building. At this point, June awakens both to discover her predicament and to spy Airachnid. Jack tells Airachnid he's found his mom, but she points out the task was to ''rescue'' June. Webbing Jack's hand to the ground, she prepares to destroy his family.

The MECH surgeons finish cutting through the web holding Arcee, and Silas instructs them go for the heart, as they only have time to take one part. Arcee has recovered consciousness by this point, and she tosses the MECH personnel aside before leaving to help Jack.

As Jack continues to try to free his hand, Airachnid moves in on June. Before she can lay a hand on mom, however, Arcee comes barreling up a nearby roof and tackles her. Jack gets free and goes to help June, while Arcee and Airachnid battle on the factory superstructure. They eventually reach the ground, but Airachnid's laser fire damages the platform June is dangling from, and Jack has to scramble to avoid falling. Jack accidentally knocks against a lever, pouring concrete into a concrete truck on the ground. Arcee manages to kick Airachnid into a container nearby, and with Jack's help, pours concrete in on top of her. Airachnid starts climbing out, but is frozen by the quick-drying substance. Arcee goes to help June, but the concrete isn't enough, and Airachnid webs her back to the ground. Luckily, the cavalry arrives in the form of [[William Fowler|Agent Fowler]] with three helicopters armed with chain guns.

Silas wonders how Fowler was alerted, and then realizes Jack stole his radio earlier.

The helicopters stop firing, but this just allows Airachnid to [[scanning|scan]] Fowler's chopper and make her escape in her new [[alternate mode|altmode]]. Her scanning process is also observed by Silas.

Fowler introduces himself to June and attempts to weave a cover story, but June doesn't buy it. Jack introduces her to Arcee, and the next day, they go to the [[Autobot Outpost Omega One|Autobot base]] so she can meet the rest of the Autobots.
