When Megatron called for the most ferocious Insecticon, Hardshell put his name forward, and was sent with three other Insecticons to a volcanic region near the equator to search for an [[Iacon (polity)|Iacon]] relic. He encountered [[Bulkhead (Prime)|Bulkhead]] and fought the Wrecker, but came off second best and lost a mandible into the deal. After recovering, he and his Insecticon companions found the relic containing a small amount of [[Tox-En]], an [[energon]] variant. They attempted to track Bulkhead, who had taken most of the Tox-En, and after following a false trail the [[Autobot]] had left, eventually caught up with him in a volcano's crater. Though Bulkhead was weakened by the Tox-En, he managed to expose Hardshell to enough Tox-En to severely weaken him. The Autobot hurled the Tox-En at Hardshell, knocking him into a volcanic vent. Returning to the ''Nemesis'', Hardshell faced Megatron's wrath by failing to produce the Tox-En, but mollified his master by relating the news that Bulkhead had been terminated, but Knock Out got on Hardshell's nerves by stating that his Insecticon partner [[Tunnel Vision|turned out to be useless]]. As he gloated about his victory to two of his brothers, a few Vehicons then got on his nerves when they called him and the Insecticons " pit-loving scavengers and scrap-eaters", resulting in a brawl which made Knock Out want them contained after a minor scratch to the chest. As Cybertron's core shut down, the Insecticon's made their way up further to the surface to find Energon. Shockwave was able to come across Hardshell, Sharpshot and Kickback and convinced them to join the ranks of the Decepticons along with his other brothers.

Hardshell was sent by [[Shockwave (Prime)|Shockwave]] in order to challenge a recently escaped [[Grimlock (Prime)|Grimlock]] and [[Swoop (Prime)|Swoop]]. Using a battlesuit he attempted to blast the two Dinobots away, but luckily Swoop provided Grimlock explosive fuel pods to fling at the Insecticon. [[Teletraan-1]] reactivated Omega Supreme to fly the Plasma Energy Chamber to safety. Omega was horrified to be informed by the [[Communication Grid]] that the [[Decepticon]]s held eighty-five percent of the planet; that only three of the High Council lived and all of them were Decepticons; the [[AllSpark]] had been ejected from the [[Well of All Sparks]]; and Sentinel Prime was dying. Omega killed four [[Dark Energon]]-infused Decepticons, but Megatron hammered him in the knee causing him to collapse and allowing a swarm of gladiators to crawl on him. Omega fell, crushing the gladiators, but the Dark Energon left their bodies to power Megatron to the point he could turn Omega on his back. Omega Supreme was the guardian of the [[Omega Gate]], which gave access to the Core of Cybertron. Omega lay inactive during the war until Megatron's forces invaded [[Iacon (polity)|Iacon]] seeking what they thought was the [[Omega Key]] (which would allow access to the Core), forcing [[Sentinel Zeta Prime|Zeta Prime]] to activate the false Omega Key and awaken the sleeping giant. His mission: Destroy Megatron.

Omega followed the homing signal of the false key and destroyed the fleet of Decepticon ships Megatron was using to search for him. As the Decepticons were securing their wounded, the mighty Autobot attacked, destroying their rescue ship and killing the survivors. At first, the Decepticons seemingly defeated the Guardian of Iacon when they destroyed the supports for a section of bridge Omega was standing upon, but the Autobot returned with a vengeance, using his main gun to disintegrate what remained of the bridge and forcing Megatron's squad to flee to safety.

Omega Supreme attacked Megatron wherever he went, destroying a cargo lift the Decepticon rode, smashing his way through a tunnel and laying landmines upon a bridge that was the only route to safety. Eventually, Omega Supreme tracked the Decepticons to an Autobot anti-aircraft battery on a terrace and attacked with his main gun, heatseeking missiles, [[Aerialbot (WFC)|Aerialbots]] and briefly defending himself with an impenetrable energon barrier. However, the Decepticons discerned the pattern of Omega's attacks and breached his armour thanks to the terrace' turrets, forcing him to crash down into a sub-level of Iacon below.

Sure that the Autobot was destroyed and eager to get his hands on the means to open the Omega Gate, Megatron led his squad down, only to find that Omega Supreme had transformed and re-energized himself with energon batteries drawn from underground. Omega Supreme battered the Decepticons with a combination of missiles, laser turrets, his main gun and a powerful arm-mounted tractor beam, until [[Soundwave (Prime)|Soundwave]] deduced that Omega's defensive weakness were his turrets - destroying them forced the Autobot guardian to draw upon the energon batteries to regenerate. Seizing the advantage, the Decepticons infected the batteries with a charge of Dark Energon, corrupting Omega Supreme's systems when he drained the batteries. While Omega dealt with the Dark Energon with a counter-virus, Megatron attacked, severely damaging the Autobot's armour. Down, but not out, Omega Supreme drew energy from Cybertron's core itself and unleashed a withering multitude of missiles upon the Decepticons. However, with his internal shielding exposed, Omega was vulnerable, and eventually the Decepticons brought him down by blasting his exposed chest cavity. Gloating in victory, Megatron blasted Dark Energon into Omega Supreme's chest, and the Autobot, helpless to fight against it, was corrupted. Omega Supreme was taken underground where he was forced to open the Omega Gate, allowing Megatron to corrupt Cybertron's core with Dark Energon.

The rumours of Omega Supreme and Zeta Prime's defeats spread through the Autobot camp, leaving the Autobots direction-less and dispirited. Just when hoped seemed to die for the Autobots, a new hero stepped up to lead them: [[Optimus Prime (Prime)|Optimus Prime]], the last of the [[Prime (rank)|Primes]].

Charged by the [[Autobot High Council]] with destroying the infection to Cybertron's core, Optimus Prime lead a team consisting of [[Ironhide (Prime)|Ironhide]] and [[Warpath (WFC)|Warpath]] to the chamber outside the Omega Gate, where Omega Supreme was being imprisoned. There they found the Decepticons torturing the giant Autobot and force-feeding him Dark Energon to prevent him from repairing himself and escaping his bonds. After his captors were destroyed, [[Ratchet (Prime)|Ratchet]] began repairing Omega Supreme's damage and Dark Energon corruption, but the party were set upon by dozens of Decepticon reinforcements. Just as they were attacked by a Decepticon [[Destroyer (WFC)|Destroyer]], Omega Supreme regained enough functionality to rip the foe to pieces with one hand.

With the present Decepticon threat removed, Omega Supreme opened the Omega Gate to Cybertron's core. At the climax of the Great War, Decepticon Leader Megatron defeated and stole the Omega Key from Zeta Prime. Immediately, sirens began ringing, and Omega was awakened, and immediately went for Megatron. Omega Supreme decimated the Decepticon forces in Iacon, much to Megatron's horror and fury. Omega Supreme was left to find the Decepticon leader with Autobots Jetfire and Cliffjumper at his side.

Megatron returned with his team, defeating Jetfire and Cliffjumper, but Omega finally found them, and began to swipe at them through entire walls. Thundercracker observed the titan had somehow grown huger, but Megatron led his hesitant Decepticons onward nonetheless. Omega Supreme fell, and Megatron claimed a decisive victory in the war.

Back on [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] in the latter part of the war, Smokescreen was keen to be a soldier and underwent training with the [[Cybertron Elite Guard]] though it was more of a boot camp at the time. To his disappointment, he ended up on security detail at the [[Iacon (polity)|Iacon]] [[Hall of Records]] guarding [[Alpha Trion (Prime)|Alpha Trion]]. Though he learned much, he still yearned for combat. He thought his chance had come when the [[Decepticon]]s attacked Iacon directly, but instead he was immediately knocked into stasis by a Decepticon bomb, and woke up much later on one of their transports. Giving the guard the slip, Smokescreen stole an escape pod which took him to [[Earth]].

Upon landing, he joined members of [[Team Prime]] in fighting off some Decepticons who had converged on the pod. His wild, reckless fighting ignited the pod's spilled fuel, which sent the Deceptions packing, but did little to impress Team Prime. Though the others were suspicious, Optimus accepted him upon his recounting of tales only Alpha Trion and Optimus would have known. They took him to [[Autobot Outpost Omega One|Outpost Omega One]] and the [[human]] [[Jack Darby]] gave him a tour during which he recognized some of the relics from the Hall of Records. Due to Smokescreen's inexperience, Optimus refused to let him go on a mission to recover [[Red Energon]], and instead he and Jack went to find him a new [[alternate mode]]. When Prime's team got into trouble, Smokescreen had the idea of using the [[phase shifter]] to help and convinced [[Ratchet (Prime)|Ratchet]] to let him try. On the battlefield, he succeeded in using it to separate [[Starscream (Prime)|Starscream]] from the [[Apex Armor (Prime)|Apex Armor]], ultimately resulting a victory (more or less) for the Autobots. [[Bulkhead (Prime)|Bulkhead]] rebuffed Smokescreen's suggestion of using the Apex Armor while mending. When the Decepticons got hold of a [[Project Damocles]] satellite, Optimus led a team including Smokescreen to a military base in [[Colorado]] to protect the satellite's control codes. They ended up tangling with Decepticons, and Smokescreen was almost hit by the laser from the orbiting satellite. Smokescreen tried a solo attempt to get to [[Soundwave (Prime)|Soundwave]]'s location but was almost hit again before being called to join Bulkhead in fighting [[Silas|Cylas]] and they succeeded in driving the [[MECH]] commander off. After Smokescreen threatened a human driver and had his picture taken, he was assigned Jack to teach him the ropes. He managed to talk Jack into pulling pranks on several humans, and when Ratchet detected an Iacon homing beacon, Smokescreen volunteered to investigate and took Jack along too. When it turned out the relic in question was the [[Star Saber (Prima)|Star Saber]], Smokescreen charged in and was promptly captured by the Decepticons. After the rest of the Autobots saved the day, they gave Smokescreen a stern talking to. {{storylink|Legacy}}

When Optimus decoded the location of the first [[Omega Key]], Smokescreen volunteered to go fetch it, and secretly took the phase shifter with him. After he and [[Arcee (Prime)|Arcee]] found the key, they were ambushed by Megatron, who struck Smokescreen with a wave of energy from the [[Dark Star Saber]]. Though the other Autobots thought Smokescreen dead, he had instead survived thanks to the phase shifter and found his way out of the ruins in time to help Optimus retrieve the Omega Key from Megatron. Smokescreen remained exuberant after his victory, getting on the other Autobot's nerves, and was disappointed when he was left at base while Arcee and [[Bumblebee (Prime)|Bumblebee]] went to get the next key. He got his chance when he and Bulkhead were sent to get Key number 3, but after an encounter with [[Dreadwing (Prime)|Dreadwing]], Smokescreen was knocked out in the process of retrieving the key. He was upset at the loss, and after Arcee lectured him, went out for a drive, unaware that both sides were about to discover that he himself was the final relic. Metroplex had been lying dormant in what would become Autobot City for thousands of years, and inadvertedly became a part of the battlefield when [[Megatron (Prime)|Megatron]] attacked the [[Ark (WFC)|Ark]]. After pulling a switch or two, Autobot leader [[Optimus Prime (Prime)|Optimus Prime]] observed the interior of Metroplex constantly shifting and transforming to accomadate him. After using a turret to help fight the Decepticons, Optimus found himself herded to a mysterious bright light by the shifting interior. Sensing a Cybertronian prescence, Optimus desperately ordered the entity to help the Autobots in their time of need. After a final switch, an entire city began to transform into an immense, powerful Autobot - Metroplex, who had heeded the call of the [[Prime (rank)|Last Prime]].

Metroplex's prescence on the battlefield proved invaluable to the struggling Autobots. The titan easily wiped out much of the Decepticon army, including the deadliest of foes such as tanks. Metroplex would launch a devastating air strike on whatever target Optimus marked for destruction, and the colossus was able to wipe out Megatron's equally massive guns that were giving the Autobots a hard time. However, just as he was to destroy the last of the towers, it shot Metroplex point blank in the chest, felling the mighty giant. Fearing for the worst, Optimus pushed on, but was captured by the Decepticons, and brought to Megatron, who mocked and berated the helpless Autobot leader.

However, the villain [[Dark Designs|gloated too much]], and Metroplex revealed his survival by ominously approaching from the back of Megatron's base. After breaching - alright we'll be honest, crushing - the walls of the base, the Decepticons were quick to back away from the huge threat, but Megatron ordered them to stand their ground. It was at this point that Metroplex had enough of the tyrant, and crushed him several times with his enormous fist, killing Megatron to the shock of the Decepticons, who were soon led in a retreat by [[Starscream (Prime)|Starscream]]. Unfortunately, the Energon used to fuel Metroplex and the Autobots' defense of Autobot City drained their supply, preventing the Ark from being launched. Still, Optimus was glad to have an ally like Metroplex on their side.

Days later, after the Autobots located another source of Energon - only for it to be halved thanks to the Decepticons - Metroplex offered to sacrifice his life, donating the Energon inside him to give the Ark enough juice to launch. Optimus protested, but Metroplex had made his choice. Connecting his Spark to the Ark's fuel tanks, there was enough Energon to launch the ship. The heroic titan collapsed for a final time, but was happy to see the Autobots finally leaving Cybertron, and in his dying moments, Metroplex's last words were, [['Til all are one|"'Til all are one."]]

Optimus sadly swore that Metroplex's sacrifice would not be in vain.
