:The Battle of Autobot City is a battle from the Generation 1 continuity family.

The Battle of Autobot City refers to the protracted battle between the Autobots and Decepticons at Autobot City, the base of the Autobots on Earth, taking place in the year 2005 in one reality. By its end, the leaders of both the Autobot and Decepticon forces were dead or dying, numerous combatants on both sides had been killed, and events were set in motion that would lead to the creation of Galvatron and, eventually, the passing of the Matrix of Leadership.

Let the slaughter begin!

Prelude
The Decepticons had succeeded in driving the Autobot army off Cybertron. However, the Autobots retained staging grounds on Cybertron's two moons and were in the final phase of preparations for their counterassault. All that remained was the transport of a final shipment of Energon cubes from Autobot City's production facilities. Optimus Prime dispatched a shuttle to Earth for this purpose, interestingly crewed by most of his command staff.

Unfortunately for the Autobots, the Decepticon spy Laserbeak got wind of the Autobots' plans and warned Megatron, ruler of the Decepticons. In a move reminiscent of the Decepticons' boarding of the Ark on their initial arrival on Earth, Megatron led a sizeable contingent of Decepticons against the small Autobot crew on the shuttle. Heavily outnumbered and outmatched, the Autobots were overwhelmed. Ratchet, Ironhide, Prowl and Brawn all perished (or at least were deactivated) in this attack at the hands of Megatron and Starscream.

Having taken control of the shuttle, Megatron's plan became clear: the shuttle was to be used as a "Trojan Horse", conveying the Decepticons for a surprise attack on Autobot City itself, which Megatron seemed to think would vanquish the Autobots forever. On the other hand, Megatron was never really known for his tactical genius.

The Battle
First Phase
Megatron had calculated correctly in that the Autobot shuttle would not set off Autobot City's automated defences even if carrying a Decepticon crew. It was sheer chance that a small human child noted there was a hole in the shuttle and alerted the young Autobot Hot Rod, who divined the truth of the situation. Hot Rod opened fire on the shuttle, damaging it to the point that it exploded and went into an uncontrolled crash. His actions also allowed other nearby Autobots, including Kup, to realize something was wrong.

With the shuttle's destruction imminent and the Decepticons' cover blown, Megatron ordered his troops to debark and attack immediately. A number of Decepticons transformed to alternate mode, commenced attacks on Autobot City and attempted to pick off those Autobots caught outside.

The Autobots, though surprised and outnumbered, quickly rallied to the defense. Ultra Magnus, commanding the City, ordered Blaster to contact Optimus Prime on Moonbase One to obtain reinforcements, Springer to transform Autobot City into its battle mode, and the only Autobot with an amphetamine problem to assist in alerting Autobots as to the attack (if they weren't already clued in by hordes of Decepticons bringing the rain right down on their heads.)

Springer and Arcee delayed transforming the city for as long as possible to try and allow Hot Rod and Kup to get back inside. Eventually running out of time, they began the transformation, offering the city (and its Autobot defenders) greater capacity to meet the Decepticon assault. It also had the added bonus of taking off Starscream's right foot.

Kup and Hot Rod, speeding toward the city, saw that the two Insecticons Shrapnel and Kickback were eating through one of the doors, but Kickback was taken across a chasm by the retracting bridge. Using the Insecticon as a springboard, Hot Rod and Kup were able to clear the gap and enter the city (crushing Kickback's head and ramming Shrapnel out of the way in the process) moments before the armored doors closed.

Meanwhile, Blaster did manage to make brief contact with the Cybertronian Autobots, but the signal was cut off by the intervention of Soundwave and the four henchmen he had with him: Rumble, Ravage, Frenzy and Ratbat. However, Blaster evened the odds by putting his own quartet of counterparts into the fight: Ramhorn, Steeljaw, Rewind, and Eject.

Unable to penetrate Autobot City's defences by conventional means, Megatron then ordered the Constructicons to merge into the gestalt Devastator. The giant robot quickly made his presence felt, penetrating the first line of defences by literally tearing them open, and shattering one attempt by Springer, Kup, Hot Rod and Arcee to put him out of action. But even so, the two sides were so evenly matched that the battle continued over the course of the remainder of that day and throughout the night.

Second Phase
One shall stand, one shall fall.

However, the City could not hold out forever; by the next morning Autobot defences had been broken by relentless Decepticon assaults, and the likelihood of a mass slaughter was high. It was at this crucial point that Autobot reinforcements commanded by Optimus Prime arrived. The Dinobots were deployed to attack Devastator, with some success, but could not halt the Decepticons' advance into Autobot City.

That task fell to Optimus Prime, who made a heroic solo frontal assault against the massed firepower of the most elite members of the Decepticon army. In tractor-trailer mode, he mowed down Thrust and Shrapnel and nearly Blitzwing, before transforming to robot mode and using his ion blaster to singlehandedly blast the Decepticons Ramjet, Thundercracker, Soundwave, Kickback, and Dirge, fighting his way to engage Megatron in what he assured the Decepticon would be their final battle.

The battle between the two leaders was brief and intense, but resulted in a seeming-victory for Prime. But Megatron had spotted a gun a matter of yards away from him. Stalling for time with false pleas for mercy, Megatron crawled towards the gun. Hot Rod intervened as Megatron grabbed the gun, trying to overpower the Decepticon leader. But his efforts backfired, as Megatron overpowered the young Autobot, used him as a shield and shot Optimus repeatedly. Tossing aside Hot Rod, Megatron prepared to finish his longtime nemesis off. Prime, however, managed to gather his remaining strength to deal a haymaker powerful enough to knock Megatron off a ledge and into a fall that would prove almost-lethal.

Seeing their leader conclusively defeated in this way broke the Decepticons spirit. Starscream, taking interim command, ordered Astrotrain to transform and ferry the Decepticons away in a general retreat. Unsurprisingly, Starscream appeared ready to leave Megatron to die, but Soundwave carried him to Astrotrain. Gathering up their wounded, the Decepticons fled, leaving the Autobots to similarly gather up their own casualties.

Aftermath
Large numbers of Autobots and Decepticons had either been terminated or wounded as a result of the battle. Windcharger, Wheeljack, and maybe Huffer were among the casualties, and even the mighty Optimus Prime soon succumbed to his wounds and perished, but not before passing the Matrix of Leadership to Ultra Magnus as his successor, unaware that the Matrix had chosen Hot Rod to become the new Autobot leader.

The wounded Decepticons—including the Insecticons, Skywarp, Thundercracker, and Megatron—were thrown out of Astrotrain to lighten the load, where they would later be found by the Chaos-bringer Unicron and reshaped into Galvatron, Scourge, Cyclonus, and the Sweeps.

The Unicron War would be the next major Transformer battle, its events spinning directly out of the Battle of Autobot City.

Notes
* The battle is "act 1" of The Transformers: The Movie.
* It's unclear how Megatron managed to beat the Autobot shuttle to Earth's solar system.
* Storyboards that have found their way to the public over the years show additional scenes that were scripted and planned, but (in all probability) never animated:
** At the beginning of the shuttle segment, the Autobot shuttle would have been shown dodging through an asteroid storm, thus explaining why they didn't at least detect the approaching Decepticons. Some of this concept made it into the Marvel Comics adaptation of the movie. Then again, the Autobots never were too big on security. How many times did the Decepticons casually stroll into Autobot Headquarters during the series??
** Hot Rod's adventures outside the city would have been a bit longer and more dramatic. A short scene would also show him getting reprimanded by Ultra Magnus inside the city.
** Mirage would have stealthily blasted Bombshell before getting shot at by Megatron.
** Tracks, Sideswipe, Red Alert and Ultra Magnus would have finally brought down Devastator with a missile barrage. The Constructicons would subsequently kill Red Alert as the Autobots retreated.
** Several Decepticons would have dogpiled Optimus Prime at the start of his confrontation with Megatron, only for him to trounce them all soundly.
** Trailbreaker's lifeless body would have been seen as the Decepticons retreated.
* Scenes appearing in the Japanese trailer for the movie show a much larger Decepticon armada than is seen in the final take, footage of Mirage and Bluestreak, and Skywarp being shot down in an approach to Autobot City.

* Shockwave briefly appears flying over the battle, but nowhere else during it. Whether he was meant to be there or if this was an animation error is uncertain.
* The same sequence apparently shows Ironhide fighting for the Decepticons, and Rumble flying around prior to being ejected. A generic similar to Dirge but using a standard Seeker model appears in another sequence.
* Counting characters who were meant to be there, were seen outside, or were killed, the Autobots had Ultra Magnus, Hot Rod, Kup, Blurr, Springer, Arcee, Blaster, Perceptor, Grapple, Huffer, Trailbreaker, Bluestreak, Windcharger, Wheeljack, Smokescreen, Sunstreaker, Mirage and 4 cassettes - more than enough to counter Megatron, six Seekers, three Insecticons, six Constructicons, Astrotrain, Blitzwing, Soundwave and 4 cassettes from inside a fortified position. Being 'outnumbered' or at a 'distinct tactical deficiency' assumes either that the Autobot cast has been trimmed down or the Decepticons brought along a ton of generics.
* The events of "Five Faces of Darkness" imply that Metroplex was present at the battle, but unable to transform to robot mode because his transformation cog was damaged. Some fiction suggests that Metroplex is part of (or the same thing as) Autobot City. (All sorts of fanon ensues from placing these two facts in close proximity. Use caution.)
* The fight between Optimus Prime and Megatron was remade into the commercial of 2008 Universe toyline, with CGI models based on their Masterpiece toys.
* Okay, we're going to be honest here. The whole point of this battle is to off your favorite characters in violent ways, then replace them with newbies who we've never seen before.

[[Image:battleofautobotcity.png.png|left|180px|thumb|Yea, now this is what i call a battle.

With the Bomber Project completed, God Ginrai heads for the moon, and the battle of his life!

Synopsis
BlackZarak is still on his way to the Moon to meet with Overlord.

As work proceeds apace on the final stages of the Autobots' Bomber Project, Metalhawk follows up on Phoenix's report of a Decepticon attack on the Weather Observatory Moon Base, but proves unable to contact the personnel there. This, of course, is due to the fact that Mega and Giga have attacked the facility and imprisoned its staff. The prisoners attempt to mount an escape, lasering their way through the door of their makeshift cell and splitting into two teams, but Giga and Mega have been watching them via the security monitors. Giga stops the escape of one group by intercepting them in a corridor and blasting them with a freeze ray. A second group of escapees, however, manages to use the time their comrades have bought them to beam a message to Earth, which is received by the Autobots.

The Autobots wonder what Overlord's business is on the Moon, but as Hawk is about to organise a mission to rescue the moonbase staff, they receive a transmission from Grand Maximus. Maximus informs them of BlackZarak's approach on the Moon, and they realize the Decepticons' intentions to meet up with him there. Shūta's mind turns to what would happen to the Autobots if BlackZarak is allowed to reach Earth, and the scenario he imagines horrifies him.

Ginrai, Lightfoot and the Headmaster Juniors review the status of the Bomber Project and its projected end result, which Lightfoot says will have immense power. Still, they decide that Ginrai will have to defeat Overlord before BlackZarak reaches the Moon, as a fight against both Decepticons at once would be terrible odds. Ginrai's thoughts are consumed with his previous defeat at the hands of Overlord and the inevitable impending rematch. When he punches a wall in anger, Minerva observes as he winces, having aggravated the injuries which linger from his battle with Overlord. She tells Shūta and Cab, and when they approach Ginrai in the middle of his training, he asks them to spar with him the following day.

Cab and Shūta are actually able to hold their own against Ginrai until Lightfoot arrives to tell them all that the Bomber Project has been completed. Everyone returns to British Motors to view the finished "Godbomber", and Ginrai is intent on merging with it and heading for the Moon right away. Metalhawk refuses, telling Ginrai that he cannot save the Earth all by himself, but Ginrai presses on regardless, to cries of support from the Headmaster Juniors and affirmative words from the other Pretenders. Ginrai fuses with Godbomber, becoming "God Ginrai" for the first time, and immediately takes off into space.

Devil Z observes the launch of God Ginrai and informs Mega and Giga, who merge into Overlord and intercept Ginrai in space before he reaches the Moon. With the increased power of Godbomber, Ginrai proves much more resistant to Overlord's attacks and is able to mount a powerful defense against the Decepticon's assault, shrugging off the same firepower that so injured him last time. Having taken damage, Overlord retreats back to the lunar surface with the intention of stalling for time until BlackZarak arrives, and Ginrai gives chase, determined to finish it.

Arriving at the moonbase, Ginrai prepares to end the battle with a Chōkon Power-enhanced blast from his God Cannon. Before he can fire the weapon, however, a beam of energy strikes him, knocking him to the ground, and he turns to see the imposing form of BlackZarak towering over him! The Autobots on Earth observe the new arrival and conclude that it's the Decepticon whom Grand Maximus has been battling. The Juniors believe he will be no match for God Ginrai. BlackZarak impales Ginrai's shoulder with his spear and kicks him to the ground, but the Autobot leader is filled with determination to protect Earth at any cost. Rising to his feet, Ginrai is caught between his two greatest enemies yet, ready to take everything they've got!
*Some genius decided that it would be best to have BlackZarak first appear in robot mode in Shūta's daydream. *The Decepticons don't seem particularly surprised that Ginrai is still alive, considering Mega and Giga thought they'd killed him during their first battle with him.
*Metalhawk turn's into a jet. Why the hell cant he fly up with some of the other Autobot's to help Ginrai?.

Synopsis
After his gruelling battle with the roboticized Hydra and Buster in the Grand Canyon, Ginrai is battered and exhausted, but there will be no chance for this weary warrior to rest, as out of the sky, his perennial foe Overlord descends. After a bout of snappy banter, the two combatants engage in a mid-air battle, and Overlord quickly sends Ginrai spiralling down into the canyon. As Ginrai claws his way up the rock face, Overlord patiently stands at the top, and the other Autobots come running up. Overlord happily informs Ginrai that he will wait for him to climb out, that they might finally settle their score in a fair manner. Although somewhat bemused by the offer, Ginrai says that it's what he wants as well, and resumes his battle with the Decepticon after ordering his troops to press on in their mission to find and stop BlackZarak. Ginrai covers their escape, but notices that for some reason, Overlord is not using his weapons...

After successfully scaling the rock face and getting out of the canyon (despite a slight stumble from Minerva along the way), the Autobots survey the terrain. A bolt of BlackZarak's Devil Thunder lances past them, allowing them to identify BlackZarak's location from the blast's point of origin, and they split up into two teams to come at the Decepticon from either side.

At the same time, the four former Decepticons—Clouder, Cancer, Wilder and Bullhorn—have gathered elsewhere in the canyon, and are preparing to make their own way towards BlackZarak, approaching the villain from behind. Clouder and Cancer are happy that they have all broken away from the Decepticons and joined the Autobots, but Wilder interrupts him—he might have been betrayed by the Decepticons, and he might be fighting against them, but he's still no Autobot. Bullhorn is on his side, too, but the two older boys admit one thing: they won't let their two friends get into any more trouble on their own.

Meanwhile, Ginrai and Overlord's battle continues to rage, with both opponents exchanging blows and relying only on their physical strength, stamina and wits. Ginrai demands to know why Overlord refuses to use his weapons, but the Decepticon keeps silent and presses his attack. Dodging a punch, Ginrai draws his gun and draws a bead on Overlord, demanding that he do the same. Overlord refuses, insisting that he will only fight with his physical power, to show Ginrai the might of his human flesh. Ginrai is taken aback, remembering that Devil Z sought the destruction of humans because of their innate strength, but Overlord proclaims that he does not share in his emperor's creed. Ginrai suggests postponing the fight until after he has defeated Devil Z, but Overlord refuses, and the battle continues.

Elsewhere, the team of Lightfoot and Road King continue their approach on BlackZarak, but find their way barred by Gilmer and Dauros, sniping at them from a vantage point in the canyon's outcrops. Road King is able to use his speed to get the drop on them and knock them off the cliff, and is then attacked by Blood, but Lightfoot holds him off. At that point, however, Hydra and Buster enter the fray, with little in the way of concern for Blood as they bomb and blast the two Autobot Godmasters. Lightfoot and Road King take cover in a cave, but the Decepticons collapse the entrance, entombing them.

Back with Ginrai and Overlord, the Autobot leader attempts to appeal to his foeman, asking that he ally with the Autobots against Devil Z. Overlord dismisses the request, claiming that he will be the one to decide how he lives his life, and, seeking to end the battle and move on with his mission, Ginrai draws his gun once more. Overlord does not move, willing to take the blast, but Ginrai cannot bring himself to pull the trigger. Thankfully, the decision is suddenly taken out his hands by the arrival of Grand Maximus, who blows Overlord out of the sky. Although hesitant about leaving the battle on this note, Ginrai departs with Grand, and they head in BlackZarak's direction, moving under his radar.

At another location within the canyon, the team consisting of Ranger and the Autobot Headmaster Juniors find a large rock wall blocking their path. They are about to climb it, when suddenly, it explodes into fragments, revealing King Poseidon lurking in wait. As Cab and Shūta tackle the combiner, Blood, Hydra and Buster fly onto the scene, and Cancer and company appear on the cliff overhead. Observing the scene below, the four boys run to combine with their Transtectors, but just as they leap through the air, a bolt of Devil Power strikes their four Transtectors. The boys are hurled to the ground... and their armor and Master-Braces have vanished! Attempting to fathom what has happened to them, the quartet turn to see their Transtectors loom over them... moving... and talking! The Transtectors tell their former owners that they have been reborn as true super-robot lifeforms, and they seize the boys, marching them down into the middle of the battle and bringing the fighting to a halt. Luckily, the tables are turned by the arrival of Ginrai and Grand Maximus, putting the Decepticons on the defensive. Overlord flies in seconds later, but just as things between him and Ginrai are about to start up once more, Devil Z announces that the attacks on America have been completed, and he orders the Decepticons to retreat. Again, Overlord speaks out against his master, but acquiesces at Devil Z's insistence, and the Decepticons pull out, heading for Europe. Ginrai attempts to pursue the villains, but a parting blast of Devil Power holds him back, and the Decepticons make good their escape as Lightfoot and Road King come running up to rejoin their team-mates.
Synopsis
Continuing to hopscotch around the globe as they pursue the Decepticons, the Autobots set Grand Maximus down at the foot of Mount McKinley in Alaska. While Ginrai hands out orders, Cancer attempts to prevent Wilder and Bullhorn from leaving. Despite having been rescued by Ginrai after being left to certain death thanks to Devil Z, the two punks have no designs on becoming Autobots like Cancer. There is a hint of doubt in Bullhorn’s eyes, but Wilder pushes Cancer out of his way and orders Bullhorn to follow him. The Autobot Headmaster Juniors arrive to try and convince them, but the pair board their Transtectors and depart. Ginrai tries to console the tearful Cancer, telling him that he must believe that they will come to understand the friendship they share.

Meanwhile, with their base destroyed, the Decepticons have relocated to the jungles of the Amazon. There, Devil Z, now inhabiting the body of BlackZarak, announces his intent to revisit his plan of wiping out humanity on Earth, this time using his own powers. Giga again voices his concern over this excessive course of action, but Devil Z silences him. Giga stalks off in rage, vowing to do things his own way. Hydra and Buster, on the other hand, have come to a different conclusion regarding Humanity. They believe that they are weakened by their human bodies, and that is why they have thus far been unable to defeat Ginrai. They petition Devil Z to use his powers to recreate them as wholly robotic beings, and the alien complies, using his "Devil Power" to fuse the brothers with their Transtectors. They reveal their new forms to a horrified Giga and Mega, and Devil Z then orders the Decepticons to begin their next attack.

Soon, news of bizarre disasters all over America reaches the Autobots, and Ginrai realizes that these reports—involving the obliteration of cities by devastating purple lightning—are the work of the Decepticons. (Duh.) Grand Maximus traces this "Devil Thunder" to the Grand Canyon, and the Autobots immediately roll out. Leaving the Godmasters to help in the disaster areas, Ginrai and the Headmaster Juniors venture into the Grand Canyon, where Ginrai is promptly attacked by the reborn Hydra and Buster. The brothers display the new abilities their forms grant them by blasting him with beams of "Devil Power," but Ginrai fights back, appalled at what they have done to themselves.

At the same time, the Juniors and Godbomber come under attack from a swarm of Krakens and Sparkdash drones, but when Godbomber detects that Ginrai is in trouble, the Juniors instruct him to go to their commander's aid. With their numbers reduced, things look bad for the Juniors... until the surprising arrival of Wilder and Bullhorn! With the aid of their former enemies, the Juniors defeat the Decepticon drones, and Cancer is overjoyed to have his friends beside him once more.

Meanwhile, Godbomber speeds to the aid of Ginrai, and the pair fuse into God Ginrai to battle the brothers in the form of Darkwings. With a defiant cry, Ginrai subjects the brothers to massive blast of the power their loss of humanity means they will never be able to use again – Jinchōkon Power! Hydra and Buster take the blast, and return with the flaming "Hellfire Attack," diving right at Ginrai, who activates his God Fire Guts and collides with the Decepticons at high speed, causing a colossal explosion. All the combatants emerge from the blast smoking and scarred, and Hydra and Buster pull out, declaring the bout a draw. The Juniors soon arrive at Ginrai’s side, but there will be no respite for the wounded warrior, as, out of the stormy skies, Overlord descends...

*The character model used for Ginrai's super mode in this episode seems to be different from usual, sporting a noticeably elongated midriff and, during the Grand Canyon fight, a prominent chin on his mouthplate.
*As Cancer dabs at his eyes, his hand is tiiiiiiny. It's also coloured in flesh tones, yet two shots later, he's shown to be wearing magenta gloves.
*Grand Maximus in robot mode is shown to be just slightly taller than Super Ginrai. While his transtector is not as big as that of his brother's, he's not that small. His waist should be at least up to Super Ginrai's shoulders.
*As Ginrai walks though the Grand Canyon, lightning flashes light the landscape. Unfortunately the two painted backgrounds do not match very well, so when the lightning-lit one is used, the rocks appear to move.
*In the first shot of the Sparkdashes, the fire coming from a Sizzle's mouth is drawn too low, making it appear to be coming from the Sizzle's chest.

Continuity errors
*It’s not uncommon for the Pretenders to be off somewhere else, busy not being in the spotlight, but, uh, where’s Clouder?

Continuity notes
*Clips from "Super Ginrai Gets Blown Away in the Desert!?" and "Disaster! The Autobot Base Explodes" are used to illustrate Hydra and Buster’s repeated defeats at the hands of Ginrai.
*The fusion of BlackZarak and Devil Z, the betrayal of Wilder and Bullhorn and the destruction of the Decepticons’ underwater base all occurred in the previous episode.
*Devil Z last attempted the destruction of human life in "Crisis! The Day of Human Extinction". Giga didn’t think much of it then, either.
*The Sparkdash previously appeared in "God Ginrai - Save Cancer!?" where only one of each type appeared. This episode establishes that, like the Seacons, they’re mass-produced drones.

Miscellaneous trivia
*The insert song "Super Ginrai no Theme" is reprised for this episode.
*Having started the series as the Autobot Commander on Earth, Metalhawk is now relegated to patrol duties.
Transformers: The Headmasters is a Japanese animated series that aired from July 3, 1987 to March 28, 1988 for 35 episodes, in support of the toyline of the same name. It shares its name with its opening song, "The Headmasters", and the ending song is titled "Kimi wa Transformer".

Overview
The Headmasters was the first Japanese-exclusive Transformers franchise, and as such, marks the departure of the Japanese animated continuity from that of the US. Planned out by TV Magazine writer Masumi Kaneda, who had previously worked on the Transformers manga, the series follows on from the events of "The Return of Optimus Prime", ignoring "The Rebirth" and introducing the Headmaster characters in a distinctly different way than their American counterparts. Emphasizing the difference between east and west, the series (and its accompanying manga) employed different character models designed by Ban Magami, illustrator of numerous Transformers manga.

The "-master" concept was entirely re-imagined for the series, discarding the Western idea of Nebulans, and establishing the Headmasters not as Transformers who bonded with organic beings, but as diminutive Transformers who connected to and controlled large, lifeless bodies named "Transtectors". Drawing on a plot point established in American episodes such as "Desertion of the Dinobots, Part 2" and "Fight or Flee", the Headmasters were introduced as refugees who fled Cybertron millions of years ago and settled on the planet Master, where they developed this new technology and trained hard in order to survive the harsh environment. Kaneda notes that he chose to give the Headmasters non-combatant origins in order to add an extra layer of meaning to the concept of "transformation," as the young 'bots grew from civilians into fully-fledged warriors. Consequently, it was Chromedome—a character essentially overlooked in the West—who was chosen as the lead of the series and cast as a "fiery youth" in order to emphasize this "personal transformation" theme, as well as to carry on the pattern of leaders with automotive vehicle modes. His opposite number, and perhaps the true breakout character of The Headmasters, was Decepticon Six Changer Sixshot, a powerful ninja character who also embodied the “personal transformation” concept with his shifting allegiance.

According to the booklet included with the Pioneer DVD release of the series, the earliest episodes of the series were based on aborted scripts written for the unmade fourth season of the American cartoon, and indeed, after an opening three-parter that introduces the new characters, the series does indeed adopt the American format of individual episodic stories. As the series progresses, however, it develops an ongoing story and style that Kaneda openly admits is steeped in Toei's history of sci-fi robot anime—likely due in no small part to the involvement of production staff who had a history of work in the genre, including writers Keisuke Fujikawa, Toyohiro Ando and Yoshihisa Araki, and producer Kenji Yokoyama.

Storyline
When Optimus Prime released the energy of the Matrix of Leadership to cure the Hate Plague, he could not have predicted the consequences of his actions. In 2011, without the energy of the Matrix to regulate it, the mega-computer Vector Sigma begins to destabilize, opening the planet up to an invasion by the Decepticons and their new Headmaster warriors. Although the Autobot Headmasters, led by Fortress, arrive to help turn the tide of the battle, the day will not be won without the Matrix, and so Hot Rod and the Headmasters scour the Earth in order to recover the talisman and stabilize Vector Sigma once more. During the course of the conflict, Optimus Prime dies once again, and Hot Rod again becomes Rodimus Prime.

The status quo of the renewed war sees Rodimus Prime in command across Cybertron and the Autobots' secondary command post on Athenia, with Ultra Magnus leading his own individual squad on Earth and operating out of Autobot City. In contrast, the Decepticons are based out of their old base on Chaar, with Sixshot leading the Decepticons' Earth forces, operating out of Trypticon. Operating in the shadows is Galvatron's secret ally, the Decepticon Headmaster leader Scorponok, who has a vendetta against Fortress for exiling him from Master. The first major shift in the direction of the series occurs when Vector Sigma develops a new alloy named Cybertonuron, and Scorponok arranges for the destruction of Cybertron itself in order to keep the alloy from falling into the hands of either the Autobots or Galvatron. Galvatron is caught in the planet-destroying blast and believed dead, while Rodimus Prime decides to venture into space and search for a new homeworld for the Transformers, leaving Scorponok and Fortress in control of their respective factions.

Scorponok immediately begins a plan to harness the power of plasma energy, destroying Mars in pursuit of his evil scheme. However, Galvatron soon reveals that he has survived and returns to take control of the Decepticons, leading them on a series of interplanetary raids for the purpose of gathering up enough energon to enact his master plan. In battle in Alaska, the Autobot Headmasters collapse a glacier on the villain, removing this threat, but allowing Scorponok to take leadership once more.

The Decepticons withdraw to planet Master, leading several refugees to escape to Earth to alert the Autobots to their plight, where a plasma energy explosion fuses the refugees and a group of Autobots and Decepticons together, creating the Targetmasters. The Autobots head for Master, where Scorponok is attempting to construct a weapon that can counter Fortress's mighty Master Sword, and engage the Decepticons in a series of battles. When Scorponok's weapon, the Zarak Shield, lays Fortress low, the Decepticons return to Earth in order to destroy the planet and gather its plasma energy. In a final battle at the South Pole, Fortress is super-charged with the combined energy of the entire Autobot army, and is finally able to defeat Scorponok and foil his plans.
