Original Air Date: December 19, 1984

Summary
On the island of Bali, there is a swamp through which people rarely travel. It is the Demon Swamp, and in that swamp lie monsters who appear to be enormous insects. But they are not insects, they are Shrapnel, Bombshell, and Kickback, and they are robots in disguise. They are driven by a single, unrelenting desire: food. Attacking a trio of boats, the insects feed on the grain, but quickly become interested in the reports of a farm. At the Autobot base, Spike overhears the reports of "robot insects", and a team is taken aboard Skyfire to investigate while Sparkplug remains to alert Optimus Prime and the rest of the Autobots.

However, Laserbeak comes across the transmissions, and Megatron is intrigued. He takes a group of Decepticons to Demon Swamp, where Soundwave dispatches Ravage to locate the robots' lair. The Decepticons discover that the lair is not a hollowed-out rock, as it appears, but an escape pod ejected from the Decepticon cruiser that brought them to Earth. Thundercracker realizes what Megatron has already figured out: The robot insects are Decepticons who have been modified to take insect beast modes&mdash;Insecticons, if you will.

Meanwhile, Optimus Prime is leading the rest of the Autobots to the farm, but they are blocked by a local festival. Sideswipe leads the Autobots down a shortcut...which turns out to be a dead end. Refusing to admit defeat, Sideswipe decides to drill his way through the solid rock. Arriving at the farm the Insecticons are attacking, Bumblebee, Windcharger, and Brawn attack, only to discover that the Insecticons possess some impressive weapons systems. Worse, they can make clones of themselves by using shells and scrap metal. Overwhelmed, the Autobots take cover amid the crops, but Shrapnel releases a fragmentation grenade which cuts the crops down to size. Finally, Megatron and the Decepticons arrive. The Autobots realize they're in over their heads, but Skyfire has been damaged and cannot transform. Shrapnel finds something familiar about the Decepticons, and when Megatron explains that they came from Decepticon science, Shrapnel extends his hand in friendship...an alliance which will be solidified by destroying the Autobots at the farm.

Elsewhere, Sideswipe is getting nowhere slowly with his drilling, so Optimus Prime decides on a simpler tactic and drives right through the rock wall. Coming up on the farm just in time, Sideswipe and Sunstreaker tackle the Decepticons, who withdraw to a nearby oil refinery to recharge before they destroy the Autobots. During the respite, Wheeljack repairs Skyfire, who follows them in the air while the Autobots follow from the ground. The Insecticons attack Skyfire, and Wheeljack goes to help but is knocked out of the air by Kickback. Shrapnel takes control of Sunstreaker and Sideswipe, causing them to drive toward the Autobots, but Trailbreaker disrupts Shrapnel's control with his force field. Optimus throws Brawn at Shrapnel, but Kickback knocks him off. Fortunately, Skyfire is able to catch Brawn.

At the refinery, the Decepticons are busy making some energon cubes. Megatron offers the Insecticons a tanker filled to the brim, and the trio gorge themselves. Unfortunately, it also cause the oil to leak into the ocean. As the Autobots arrive, the Decepticons force them to take some cover. Shrapnel uses a shrapnel grenade to knock Optimus, Brawn, and Wheeljack into the ocean, where the Autobot leader warns that the oil could ignite. On cue, Thundercracker lights the oil on fire, only for the Autobots to knock him into the flaming water. Before the ship goes kaboom, Ironhide is able to douse the flames. However, storm clouds appear overhead, and Shrapnel uses them as a means to fire electricity at the Autobots. Spike realizes that the rubber in their tires will serve as insulation. Some Autobots go to vehicle mode, while others stand on them, neutralizing Shrapnel's abilities. In addition, Trailbreaker uses his force field to neutralize Shrapnel's control over the clones, causing them to go to pieces. Megatron realizes that he's losing, so the Decepticon leader employs a time-honored strategy: "If I can't have it, no one can." Megatron sets the tanker on fire and pushes it toward the refinery. However, Optimus pushes the tanker underwater, and Megatron with it. Rising to the surface, Megatron prepares to blast Bumblebee and Spike, only for Optimus Prime to throw the tanker through the air at Megatron.

The Insecticons observe the deteriorating situation and decide to cut their losses. They begin to feed off the energon, but Megatron, his rage overwhelming his common sense, orders the Decepticons to attack the Insecticons. As the Insecticons flee with the Decepticons in pursuit, the Autobots claim victory. Optimus Prime still worries that the Insecticons will inevitably be drawn back towards the Decepticons, but when and if that happens, the Autobots will be ready.

Notes
Technical/Animation Glitches
* When the Ark is first seen, it's colored silver instead of orange.
* When Sideswipe and Sunstreaker get ahead of Optimus Prime after breaking out of the tunnel, both are coloured in Sunstreaker's yellow color scheme for a brief moment.
* When the Autobots and Spike board Skyfire, Bumblebee and Spike remain visible for a split second as the door closes behind them, not in front of them as one would expect. They inexplicably disappear in the very next shot, when Skyfire takes off.
* When the Decepticons and Insecticons flee from the field, Thundercracker in jet mode is colored in Skyfire's white-and-red palette.
* When Sunstreaker and Sideswipe are controlled by Shrapnel, for a couple of seconds Sunstreaker is coloured black instead of yellow.
* Just before Brawn asks Optimus to throw him, he is in vehicle mode, then he transforms from robot to vehicle mode, and is then standing in robot mode.

Continuity Errors
* If the Insecticons had landed four million years before the crash of the Ark, and have presumably been active throughout all previous episodes, how come neither the Autobots nor the Decepticons ever learned of their existence until this episode. And when they did learn, how did they find out simultaneously?
* How does Skyfire manage to hide in the bushes with the other, shorter Autobots? He's about four Bumblebees tall!
* Why do the Decepticons and the Insecticons not know each other if they were all on board the Nemesis? Even if you assume that there were lots of Decepticons on board and Megatron didn’t know them all personally (which in itself is doubtful), the Insecticons must surely know who Megatron is! It's entirely possible to retcon this by claiming that the Insecticons were protoforms who had not come online and were activated by the pod as a method of preserving them. However, the protoform concept hadn't been introduced yet, so...
Miscellaneous trivia
* Brawn is facing Megatron, Soundwave, Thundercracker, and all three Insecticons, and he still sees a bright side: They didn't bring Rumble along. Ah, if only Gears and Huffer were more like that.
* Optimus Prime really is the strongest of the Autobots: He throws a massive oil tanker through the air at Megatron. Have you ever seen Devastator do something like that?

:Hello, I kinda think that all the points in the continuity errors section are no really continuity errors:

* If the Insecticons had landed four million years before the crash of the Ark, and have presumably been active throughout all previous episodes, how come neither the Autobots nor the Decepticons ever learned of their existence until this episode. And when they did learn, how did they find out simultaneously?

:A (kinda poor) explanation might be that the Insecticons had so far limited their activity to the "Demon Swamps" of Bali (which must have earned that named for some reason) and some surrounding landscape. The Decepticons and Autobots simultaneously found out about their existence because both of them caught the same SOS radio signal send by the Balinese farmers. Or maybe the Insecticons were, like the rest of the season 1 maincast, simply inactivated until recently.

* How does Skyfire manage to hide in the bushes with the other, shorter Autobots? He's about four Bumblebees tall!

:How about kneeling?

* Why do the Decepticons and the Insecticons not know each other if they were all on board the Nemesis? Even if you assume that there were lots of Decepticons on board and Megatron didn’t know them all personally (which in itself is doubtful), the Insecticons must surely know who Megatron is! It's entirely possible to retcon this by claiming that the Insecticons were protoforms who had not come online and were activated by the pod as a method of preserving them. However, the protoform concept hadn't been introduced yet, so...

:It's at no point said that the so called "Decepticon Escape Module" was launched from the Nemesis. Megatron says "It was launched before our own Starship crashed the earth four million years ago." To me that sounds like it was actually launched from Cybertron, not the Nemesis. Remember, the Ark and the Nemesis were not the first time Transformers visited Earth, as at least Starscream and Skyfire had been there long before. Megatron and his Decepticon followers want to find energy to "reboot" Cybertron. The Insecticons against that simply want to feed on energy. They have no interest in reviving Cybertron, conquering the universe or whatever. They simply left Cybertron and for a random place with lots of energy, which by coincidence was the Earth. This must not have taken place immediately before the crashlanding of the Ark, it could as well have happened millions of years before. Of course that's all my personal guessing, but that's what I myself figured out when I watched the episode (before consulting this article). --134.76.63.1 13:57, 8 February 2008 (UTC)<div id="wikia-credits"><br /><br /><small>From Teletraan I: The Transformers Wiki, a Wikia wiki.</small></div>

Despite his humble "Bot Next Door" persona, he performs his job with a dedicated seriousness. Prime and his crew came across the All Spark while repairing a Space Bridge and brought the artifact aboard their ship. During transport, they were discovered by the Decepticons, and Megatron came after them. He proved too strong to take head on (in spite of his subordinate planting a bomb on his chassis), but when the Autobot ship neared Earth, Prime knocked Megatron overboard. The Autobots stayed in stasis for the next 50 years until they were accidentally awakened by an apparent intruder. Optimus and the Autobots took on Earth vehicles as alternate modes in an attempt to assimilate with what they believed to be the local dominant culture. Prime and his team were able to dispatch a bio-mechanical insectoid that was attacking Detroit. They were hailed as heroes for it. Eventually, Starscream came for the All Spark, and Optimus found that the schemer could pack quite a punch. The Autobot officer was still able to keep Starscream from getting the artifact, though at the cost of his life. However, he was quickly revived by Sari and her All Spark-influenced key. Later, the Autobots helped rebuild parts of Detroit that were destroyed in their battle with Starscream. Transform and Roll Out!
:Based on his pre-Earth Cybertronian look, the first version of Animated Optimus Prime transforms into a half-track Cybertronic truck loosely based on the Mitsubishi Fuso Hybrid concept truck. As a half-track, instead of rear wheels, he has molded, caterpillar-linked tracks with smaller wheels inside for rolling along smooth surfaces. Prime's axe weapon is stored by partially folding the axe at the grey hinge near the handle peg, then placing the handle peg in a hole on the back of the cab (actually his two fists' holes, thus helping them holding in position) with the blade facing down and a grey peg facing up, acting as a "fifth wheel" (known as a trailer hitch among fans), should one find a suitable trailer to attach onto it.

:In robot mode, his head has a retracted mouthplate. He has a superb range of articulation, as is the standard with Animated toys, due to the extensive use of ball joints and universal hinge joints. As stated above, the hitch assembly becomes his axe, which can be wielded with one blade (for the rocket-boosted look) or have the single blade split to form a double-bladed axe. The truck roof is mounted on his left arm as a shield or can be separated in two and be attached to the axe to become giant energon blades.
Generation 1
:(Note: Events in italics occurred only in the Marvel UK books.)

Blades and the other Protectobots were created on Earth by Wheeljack and the Autobots after they stole a recording of Devastator's combiner transformation sequence and modified it (and after Optimus Prime and Buster Witwicky shared a Matrix-induced vision of the future with the Special Teams in it).

Shortly after the Protectobots were given life by the Matrix, Optimus and Wheeljack learned of a cerebro-shell implanted in Prime which had allowed Megatron to tap into the Matrix and eavesdrop on their conversations. Reversing the signal, the Autobots learned of a Decepticon plot to steal the energy-converting hydrothermocline. Taking the Protectobots with him for the mission, Optimus moved to intervene on Megatron and his Combaticons' plans.

At the industrial site, a human named Ethan Zachary broke a stand-off between the two forces by suggesting they battle for the hydrothermocline in a virtual game program he had created, so that nothing of value to either side would be damaged in the melee. With their consent, Zachary uploaded Optimus, Megatron, and the two Special Teams into his computer game environment called Multi-World. Blades was teamed with Groove, and they maneuvered through an area called the Cloud-Steppes, where cities floated on clouds and absurdly long walkways were supported underneath them. The Combaticon flyers cut loose one of the walkways, sending the ground-bound Groove and a group of Cloud-Steppers flailing and falling. Against his better judgement, Blades caught the falling humanoids instead of saving his teammate. This proved to be a good idea, as the Cloud-Steppers unleashed their patented cloud-in-a-knapsack trick to blind the Combaticons until Groove shot them down. Afterdeath!

When Grimlock took control of the Autobots, Blades began to muse on deserting like Goldbug and Blaster. While on a mission in London, his bad mood was made worse by being attacked by Action Force, and he came close to killing the humans before realizing this was against the Autobot code. He then ended up assisting Action Force, Grimlock and Centurion against a rampaging Megatron. Ancient Relics!

Generation 2
Some years later, Blades was working with a team of Autobot "firestormers" under Grimlock's command, when they first discovered the Liege Maximo's Cybertronian empire.

During one of their raids, Hound hesitated to shoot a Decepticon who said he was weaponless. Blades blasted the Decepticon, who he claimed was in fact reaching for a weapon, and berated Hound for being "soft". War Without End!

He was later seen among a crew recruited by Grimlock to destroy the Cybertronian flagship Twilight. Devices and Desires!

That mission ended in failure, but Blades survived the subsequent escape and joined another Grimlock-led team sent to Earth to back up Optimus Prime, who had gone in solo against Megatron. Rumble damaged his rotors, forcing him to land, which mostly just served to piss him off even more. The Gathering Darkness

When the Insecticons attacked an inhabited city on Earth, Optimus Prime called upon the Protectobots to evacuate the civilians caught in the crossfire. Later, as Earth's orbit was diverted to the Sun by the Combaticons, while Infeno and Red Alert fought the flames, Blades saved civilians trapped by the fires. Soon afterwards he was spraying his limited supply of coolant onto the flames, but was concerned that he was running out and couldn't cool down the whole planet. The Revenge of Bruticus

Blades, as part of Defensor, totally blew up Bruticus. Afterwards, he was with the Protectobots when they arrived ostensibly to save some window-washers from a burning skyscraper. Blades actually blew the workers from their dangling platform. Fortunately, Streetwise managed to catch them below. Later still, Blades and the other Protectobots were ordered to help defend Autobot Headquarters from a Decepticon attack. They merged into Defensor and activated his useless force field, which almost immediately deactivated, allowing the Decepticons to blast Defensor back into his component parts. {{Storylink|B.O.T.

In the year 2006, the Autobots were asked to help the Dutch authorities deal with French rebels. After dispersing the human aggressors, Blades was shot down by Galvatron. First Aid took him back to Metroplex for repairs. While Blades recuperated, the Combaticon Swindle broke into the city and managed to steal Metroplex's transformation cog, and First Aid left the Autobots when he failed to stop the theft. Unfortunately, just as First Aid left, the Autobots were called upon to deal with a rampaging Trypticon. Hot Spot ordered the remaining Protectobots to combine into Defensor even without First Aid, and they successfully saved a train full of civilians. After First Aid returned to the Autobots, Blades ferried him into Metroplex while the giant Autobot was battling Trypticon, enabling the medic to realign the replacement cog properly, which in turn allowed Metroplex to triumph. The Ultimate Weapon

Blades was one of the first three (along with Wheelie and Slingshot) to be drained by the energy leech, Tornedron. The whole of Cybertron was likewise sucked dry moments later, though all were restored when Grimlock saved the day. Call of the Primitives

Later in 2006, the Protectobots arrived at the aftermath of the battle between the Technobots and Terrorcons at Mark Morgan's laboratory. They transported the injured Jessica Morgan to County General Hospital and watched over her as the doctors restored her ability to walk with an exo-skeletal structure, enraging the robo-phobic senior Morgan. This had negative consequences. What a jerkface. The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 1

Blades stuck with his team after the official status downgrade of the special teams. Though officially neutral, the team deployed to counter the threat of Devastator in the Tagan Heights. When it became evident that the two titans were simply causing more damage, the Protectobots split up to deal with Devastator through more subtle means. It was Blades who got the most dangerous assignment of distracting Devastator while his team disabled the rampaging Ultracon.

Some while later, the Chaos Trinity invaded the Protectobot base. Blades was quick to draw arms, but was defeated by Bludgeon. The War Within: The Dark Ages
Hundreds of thousands of years ago on Cybertron, before the war with the Decepticons, Blades was part of an Autobot security force in the city of Kaon. His squad was tasked with hunting down the renegade operators of gladiatorial contests in the degenerate slum areas of Cybertron, particularly the brutal fighter who would come to be known as Megatron. Megatron Origin issue 1

When Megatron and many other prisoners escaped, Blades was part of the field team attempting to bring them back under control. He was seen having difficulty contacting other units, as Sentinel Prime made the decision to bring out his Apex armor. Megatron Origin issue 4
: Blades transforms to a rescue helicopter resembling a Bell UH-1V Iroquois. He also comes with a pair of side-mounted (non-firing) cannons. He is a "Scramble City"-style combiner limb, who can form the arm or leg of any such combiner—though he normally forms Defensor's right arm. Like many such toys, his articulation is limited to arm rotation at the shoulders. His fists are unusual in that their post holes are on the side rather than the top, an oddity he shares with Groove and First Aid. A hook-shaped handle on his gun allows him to hold it normally.

: A green redeco of Whisper, Groundshaker transforms into a Advanced Tactical Fighter concept fighter jet. As one of the higher pricepoint Micromasters, Groundshaker has stickers on his wings, making him one of the few Micromasters to personally sport a faction symbol (Autobot in this case, obviously). He comes with a military All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV), which is huge compared to himself. It has six large rolling wheels, the rear set being larger than the other four. It is armed with a huge main cannon and two laser guns on the sides. Groundshaker can stand in the cockpit, and as a testimant to the size of the vehicle, he can barely see over the edge of the cabin's armour. The main gun can raise by about 40° while the smaller twin guns can rotate 360°.

: In robot mode, Groundshaker is unusual in he has molded-on weapons, in this case a pair of dual-missiles on his shoulders. The ATV itself transforms into a large battlestation, which a launch pad for Groundshaker himself and three ramps that can be connected to other Micromaster bases. The ATV based is designed to accomodate several Micromaster figures, so one figure can man the main cannon, another can operate the rear computer console and another can sit in the left side recess. The guns retain their functionality from vehicle mode, and as an added bonus, the main cannon can now swing from side to side.

: Groundshaker's mold was also used to make the Japanese Autobot Whisper. His ATV mold was used in Japan as the Landshaker vehicle.
Klo, which roughly translates into Cybertronix as "enduring peace," was once a beautiful world. It has lakes (green), sand (yellow), and great canyons of crystal (green), and is inhabited by a passive race of cloven-hooved, pot-bellied puce-skinned organics with small, flesh coloured horns on their heads, elongated ears, and enlarged eyes, known as either Klozians or Klovians.

Fiction
Marvel Comics continuity
:Information in italics relates to the (later retconned) UK Annual text story "Another Time and Place".

Unfortunately for Klo, in addition to all of its desirable qualities, it also had a place in the Decepticon star charts- at least, until Bludgeon drove his sword through it at random.

With Cybertron in tatters and apparently disintegrating after the Unicron war, and eager to leave his erstwhile Autobot allies to their certain doom, Acting Commander Bludgeon selected the planet at random as the Decepticons' first new conquest in too long, and the Decepticon fleet spilled over Klo, spreading panic and devastation everywhere.

Although seemingly-mindless, the destruction had a hidden purpose- anticipating, thanks to his discovery of Grimlock's homing beacon, the arrival of the Autobots as avenging angels, Bludgeon intended to use the pillage of Klo to lure them into a final trap.

Thus, Klo was nearly famous for being the sight of one of the most successful Decepticon military campaigns of all time- with only one apparent casualty, the Firecon Sparkstalker, accidentally incinerated by one of his own colleagues. The Autobots came, saw, and suffered, with almost all of the Autobot survivors destroyed, with the exception of Grimlock, Kup, Prowl, Slag, and Blaster. Fortunately for Klo, however, unbeknownst to Grimlock or Bludgeon, another ship set down on the planet- the Last Autobot, final Guardian of Cybertron, carrying the team of super-heroes known as the Neo-Knights, and, more importantly, Optimus Prime. The shock factor of Optimus' latest return from the grave, coupled with the return to the fray of a still-fighting Grimlock, and the Last Autobot, whose Primus-given skills allowed him to psionically repair and resurrect the fallen Autobots, spelled doom for the Decepticon forces. Bludgeon, claiming defeat, ordered a retreat, telling the Autobots that the war was over, and that the Decepticons, "whipped like curs," would now leave for some solitary asteroid, there to live out their lives in exile.

The Decepticons departed Klo, and Optimus Prime pledged that the Autobots would help the Klozians to rebuild.

The rebuilding process took several months, during which time the bodies of the Decepticons killed in the battle were entombed or interred in some fashion. Finally, the Autobots left the planet- at which point a group of the Decepticons quietly returned, and retrieved their fallen brethren, taking them to Hydrus Four.

Trivia
* According to the original script for "End of the Road!," Klo's lakes are sulfuric. This was not conveyed well in the final publication.
