the Generation 1 alien race
:The Quintessons are a race in the Generation 1 continuity family. They are also known as the Quints.

The Quintessons are a bizarre and ancient race of mechanoids, whose history and shadowy machinations are bound up with that of the Transformers. They prefer subtle manipulation, scheming, and advanced technology over brute force, but if those don't work they can fall back on the legion of deadly Sharkticons and Allicons at their command, and a fleet of battle-ready space ships as well. However, the Quintessons themselves are have zero fighting abilities, and absolute cowards if they have nothing to hide behind. An example of this is that the Quintessons are powerless against a Sharkticon revolt.
Types of Quintessons
The Quintessons appear to be mostly (if not entirely) mechanical beings. They come in several distinct forms, some of which are identified by their place in the Quintesson's bizarre court system.

:(Note: The names given are, when possible, taken directly from the character model sheets.)

Judges
The most prominent and famous type of Quintesson, as well as the apparent "leaders" of the race, are the Judges, also referred to as the Imperial Magistrates. Consisting of an inverted, egg-shaped body, they float on a beam of energy and possess wiry tentacles for physical manipulation, but their most distinctive physical characteristics are their five rotating faces. Each face represents a different aspect of the Quintesson, though for four of the five faces, there are conflicting accounts as to what each represents.
|-
| Death || Rage/<br>Wrath || Laughter/<br>War || Bitterness/<br>Wisdom || Doubt/<br>Judgment
|-
|}
:(Note: The first names given above come from Japanese Comic Bom Bom supplements. They are derived from the descriptions given of the faces in the original script for the movie - an "angry face," a "smiling face," a "grimacing face" and a "suspicious face" - and the faces were specifically designed by Floro Dery to represent these emotions. All the same, this information remained very little-known for a long time, leading to the second set of names being made up for the 2004 publication, Transformers: The Ultimate Guide, which have no basis in anything. The original names were also used for The Ark, published by IDW in 2007.)

In the original animated series, the Judges were all of the same size, and the only named member of their breed was Judge Deliberata. Conversely, in the Marvel Comics continuity, Judges vary in size, and include the massive Lord Kledji, and the smaller Sevax. It is worth noting that the order of the faces in the ring varies from Judge to Judge (if not from shot to shot, ahem).

Other Quintesson Types
This breed of Quintesson was first seen throwing the switch that dropped the unfortunate Arblus into the Sharkticon pit. They have also been called "Gatekeepers".

Named members of this breed include General Ghyrik, who led a Quintesson attack on Autobot City. Space Pirates!

This variety of Quintesson is the second most common type, often seen in positions of authority. They have also been called "Inquisitors". In court, they are the ones who ask for the Judges' verdicts, and occasionally let the defendants say something in their defense, for all it matters.
Animated series
In ages long past, a cold and emotionless race of aliens called the Quintessons created 2 lines of sentient robots on a planet-sized factory known as Cybertron. One was a line of robots designed for domestic duties and labor (known as Autobots) and another line designed for military use (known as Decepticons). The Quintessons were exceptionally cruel to their creations, eventually leading to wide-spread rebellion, a rebellion started by the Autobot A3. Forced to flee the planet, the Quintessons eventually settled on the small, twisted planet of Quintessa, but fostered an undying hatred of all Transformers for millions of years. Five Faces of Darkness, Part 4

In 2005, they were shown to capture prisoners for trial and feeding to their army of Sharkticons. The mock trials held by the Quintesson Court seemed to have no purpose at all (except maybe for the Quintessons's amusement), as even when the Judge determined the defendant to be innocent, they were still immediately fed to the ravenous Sharkticons. However, the Dinobots manged to rescue the Autobots. Worse, Grimlock inspired the Sharkticons to rebel...by stomping his foot on the ground and telling them to. The Transformers: The Movie

One (or possibly 5, depending on who you ask) years after the defeat of Unicron, the Quintessons re-appeared. They first sent a commando team of Sharkticons to abduct various Autobots (as well as Spike Witwicky, though that may have been unintentional). Upon capturing the 'bots, the Quintessons seemed more interesting in interrogating their prisoners then feeding them to the Sharkticons. However, they eventually did find the captured Transformers to be guilty of the crime of... being Transformers (Spike was guilty by association). Five Faces of Darkness, Part 2

After Rodimus and the Aerialbots mounted a rescue for their captive friends, the Quintessons attempted to kill the would-be rescuers by destroying the entire planet of Quintessa. After this plan failed, the surviving Quintessons made an alliance with the newly revived Galvatron to attack Cybertron (in return for the fictional Decepticon Matrix of Leadership, which they made up because they needed to give him a reason not kill them). Five Faces of Darkness, Part 3

The Quintessons betrayed Galvatron almost immediately after the battle had been won, toggling a switch which caused all Transformers the Galaxy over to literally freeze where they stood. Luckily, Spike stopped the Quintessons before they had much a chance to do anything. Despite their betrayal (and the fact that they almost killed him), Galvatron remained an ally (despite that he tried to kill them also). Five Faces of Darkness, Part 5

Later plots by the Quintessons were no less nefarious. A rogue Quintesson scientist abducted several Transformers and a human for behavioral study The Killing Jar and revived the deceased Optimus Prime in an attempt to lure all the Autobots into a trap (which nearly succeeded). Dark Awakening Later still, the Quintessons attempted to rewrite history by preventing their loss of Cybertron (which nearly resulted in the very fabric of Time being destroyed). Forever is a Long Time Coming

A single Quintesson was captured by Sky Lynx to repair the body of Optimus Prime. It was mentioned that the Quintessons had gone into hiding in the furthest reaches of the galaxy and were never heard from again. The Return of Optimus Prime

Kiss Players
The Kiss Players Marissa Faireborn, Atari Hitotonari and Shaoshao Li, together with the Sparkbots Angela, Star Dust and Zangetsu, were traveling through time aboard Fortress Maximus when the space fortress suddenly went out of control.

The six found themselves on a strange alien world in the year 2011. With their ship ensnared, they were herded by Sharkticons to the Space Tribunal, where the Quintessons put them on trial for time traveling without their permission.

When Shaoshao asked if being cute was a crime, the Quintessons threatened to charge her with contempt of court. Atari suggested using their Kiss Play abilities to transform into cute costumes and ask the "octopusses" nicely to let them go. But turning into a swimsuit-clad elementary school girl and asking the judge's permission to go to the potty only resulted in Atari and her friends being found "not guilty" and dropped into the Sharkticon pit below.

Rescued by Optimus Prime and Goldbug, they fled back to Fortress Maximus and re-entered the time portal. Sucked into the maelstrom along with them, the Quintessons demanded that they stop, saying that they were the last of their kind. But it was too late, and the aliens were trapped inside the hole in space-time.

Marvel UK Comics
Like those creepy little fish that swarm behind sharks, snapping at stray scraps, the Quintessons were vile enforcers for Unicron, savagely hunting down and picking off those that attempted to escape his maw.

In 2008 Quintesson scientists realized that their planet, Quintesson (not Quintessa), was threatened with destruction by a time rift that was caused by Galvatron, Cyclonus and Scourge’s time traveling.

Desperate for their race to survive they launched a surprise attack on Autobot City, capturing it for themselves. Most of the Autobots were deactivated, except for Rodimus Prime who was outside the city at the time of the attack and Eject, Rewind, Ramhorn and Steeljaw who were hidden inside Blaster’s cassette compartment.

Using Arcee as bait the Quintessons captured the Creation Matrix from Rodimus and he reverted to Hot Rod. Out of options, Hot Rod activated the core of Autobot City, a giant Autobot called Metroplex, who transformed and drove the Quintessons off but caused massive damage to the city in the process.

The Quintessons fled, but were ordered by Lord Kledji to not return to Quintesson, but to roam the stars instead to rebuild their forces and seek revenge on the Transformers, since their home planet was doomed beyond hope. How that went for them is unknown, but as they'd managed to cheese off most of the known metallic species by that point, it probably didn't go too well.

3H Transformers Universe: The Wreckers comic
The Quintessons conspired with Cryotek to retake the newly-reformatted Cybertron. He screwed them.

Dreamwave Comics
They control the Council of Ancients.

Later, they prep the Female Autobots for invading Cybertron.

Trivia
*When asked about the Quintesson design in an interview, Floro Dery stated they were based on a cylindrical toy he designed at some point.

A series of profile books published by Dreamwave Productions in 2003 and 2004 that introduced readers to every character within the continuities of Generation 1, Armada and Energon.

More Than Meets The Eye (G1)
This is an 8-issue series that profiles all characters that were released by Hasbro between 1984 and 1991, as well as a few characters that appeared only within Marvel/Sunbow animated projects between 1984 and 1987. The series also introduces new content in order to establish parameters for stories within the Dreamwave continuity. It should also be noted that a number of personalities were created from scratch for the Micromasters, many of whom were little more than toys and names prior (though some characters, such as Countdown had personalities beforehand).

:* 1 volume, 8 issues; published April-November, 2003. The series was also released as a 2-volume trade paperback edition in December 2004, which included introductions by the authors, and bonus artwork.

More Than Meets The Eye: Armada
This three-issue limited series profiled all the characters that appeared in the Armada product line between 2002 and 2004, as well as background essays on subjects like humanity's involvement in the Armada conflict and the Mini-Con Moonbase. The profiles followed the Dreamwave storyline in its Armada comic book series, though it took cues from the Armada cartoon for various characters that did not appear in the comic series.

:* 1 volume, 3 issues; published May-July 2004.

More Than Meets The Eye: Energon
This was a planned three-issue guidebook following the format of the earlier G1 and Armada books. The series was left incomplete (in that no issues actually got released) due to the insolvency of Dreamwave Productions in late 2004.

:* Unpublished; planned 3-volume series beginning in January 2005. Some finished artwork has appeared on the web from artists who worked on the project, but the status of the text is unknown.

Megatron

:Megatron is a Decepticon from the Movie continuity family. He is often refered to as Lord Megatron. Known to humans as both "The Ice Man" and "The Mega-Man" and more formally as N.B.E. - 1

The brother of Optimus Prime as well as former Lord High Protector and co-ruler of Cybertron, Megatron is vicious and extremely powerful, single-minded in his goals, straight forward and brutally direct in his attempts to seize those goals. He is all "blunt force" in contrast to Starscream's penchant for deceit and trickery. On the downside, Megatron tends to become so obsessed with the object of his desires that he can ignore "secondary" matters and glaring flaws in his plans (otherwise, he likely wouldn't have melted into ice-cold arctic water after being white hot from re-entry and spent millions of years as a popsicle).

While some merely dislike or disregard organics, Megatron feels a violent hatred towards them and seems to view them as only slightly above a virus, with him as the cure. If there was no Allspark, it is not that big a stretch to think he'd have come here anyway, just to cleanse one more planet of it's infection

Megatron once ruled Cybertron side-by-side with Optimus Prime. For generations, the two ruled in peace. Megatron was firm, but Prime was fair, creating a nice, even balance. Sadly, he got a jonesing for the All Spark and the war started. When Bumblebee stalled him long enough for it to be launched into space, he tore off Bumblebee's arm and crushed his voice box (but in the friendliest way). He then took off into space after the All Spark, eventually pulling a Skyfire.

Megatron followed the Allspark to Earth, where he successfully crash-landed in the Arctic Circle and was frozen solid for thousands of years. In 1897, some 100 Earth-years before the arrival of the other Transformers, he was discovered by an explorer named Archibald Amundsen Witwicky. Captain Witwicky accidentally activated Megatron's navigation system and caused the coordinates of the Allspark to be etched onto the explorer's glasses. Megatron remained imprisoned in the Arctic, until the 1930s, when he was dug out by the United States government moved to a secret Sector Seven stronghold inside Hoover Dam.

In the present day, having searched the galaxy for the Allspark and being drawn to Earth, the remaining Decepticons learn of Witwicky's glasses. Through the internet, they determine the location of both Megatron and the Allspark inside Hoover Dam. Frenzy infiltrated the dam and shut down the power systems, resulting in Megatron's thawing out. Megatron declared his name before jetting off after the Allspark again. He chases a particular human who removed the Allspark from the dam. Unfortunately, this human is protected by Optimus Prime. The brothers are evenly-matched, but Megatron is eventually killed when the human rams the Allspark into the Decepticon's chest.

Megatron's body is dumped into the ocean at its deepest point, along with the remains of the other Decepticons.
*Megatron (Leader, 2007)
:Japanese ID number: MD-07

: Leader class Movie Megatron transforms into a silver Cybertronic assault jet. He is quite accurate to the CGI design... except for the giant mass of legs attempting (but failing) to hide under the wings.

: In robot mode, Megatron's sculpt is quite accurate, or as accurate as a toy based on his CG design can be. However, his paint decoration is quite inaccurate, with blue highlights on various parts of his body, possibly to allude to his pre-frozen state and to give a relatively monochromatic figure more colour. More confusing is his jet black face, which obscures the sculpt's details and is inaccurate to the movie appearance' gunmetal.

: Megatron's right fist disconnects at the wrist to become the spiked end of the extendable "chain whip" weapon concealed within his forearm (perhaps in homage to G1 Megatron's own flail weapon); pressing the black switch on the arm pulls the chain taut for a whipping attack. His arms also link together at the wrists to form a "fusion cannon," with the pod on his left forearm concealing the weapon's Automorphing twin barrels, exposed by pulling a switch. His other automorph features include his wings folding up as his vehicle nosecone is moved into place, and his feet unfolding as his knees are straightened. Finally, pressing the button on his waist activates a small friction motor, which moves various torso plates and blades on his back into place, accompanied by a metallic shrieking sound and flashing yellow lights.

:Megatron's instructions summarily fail to actually tell the reader about how his gimmicks work. The whipping-action black switch for his flail is not mentioned; they do not detail how to connect the arms for fusion cannon mode; and the fact that the cannon is on a slider, allowing it to be centre-aligned, rather than sitting off to one side, is also omitted.

: There is a significant assembly error in Megatron's arms: The right fist is supposed to launch out of the right arm, while the left arm fusion cannon is supposed to slide into position normally without requiring the user to hold it in position. However, the spring for the launching mechanism was placed in his left arm instead of his right arm, which essentially neuters the gimmicks of both arms. By switching the spring from the left arm to his right arm, the right fist should now launch properly and the left arm cannon should now Automorph correctly.

: There is also an error in Megatron's legs, in that his left and right hip joints have been swapped for reasons unknown. Switching them allows for a slightly smoother transformation.

:Legends class Megatron is the smallest mainline Movie Megatron toy, and boy does it show. Even with Megatron's relatively simple transformation sequence, the sheer simplicity of the Legends class toy means that in vehicle mode he is basically his robot mode splayed out, and again, boy is it obvious. His robot mode is passably accurate, if by accurate one means he is now a hunchback with wings for legs and Dustbusters for hands.

:Japanese ID number: MD-14

:Voyager class Megatron transforms into an ice-covered version of his cybertronic jet, with transparent blue plastic forming large portions of his vehicle mode, such as parts of his wings. This ice design is carried onto his robot mode, with his legs, shoulders and chest having some kind of 'ice' plastic covering them. With a significantly different transformation sequence compared to his earlier Leader class toy, his chest frost lowers and his shoulders raise to robot mode position when you bring his lower body forward thanks to Automorph technology. He also has his fusion cannon in its entirety on his left arm. His wings feature flip-out "ice blade", and pulling on a piece in the back of his jet mode brings them forward like pincer claws.

:Something interesting to note is that his feet are entirely spring-loaded, which means his foot and the two "rear toes" on each feet automatically close up when he's not standing up. Surprisingly, this helps a lot with the posing as the feet's parts automatically position themselves for the perfect balance.

Ironhide is the Autobot's resident weapons specialist and Optimus Prime's old friend. He is old because he is hard. He's probably had enough replacement parts to build a small army, but Ironhide doggedly refuses to roll over and die for anyone. He'll fight to the bitter end and take down more than his fair share of Decepticons in the process.

Ironhide doesn't always see optic to optic with Prime, despite their friendship. He's perhaps the more practical of the two, and more than a little trigger happy, so he can be more willing to push to autobot code to the limit if he thinks it will get the job done faster.
After meeting Sam Witwicky and Mikaela Banes, Ironhide displayed an eagerness to show off his cannons. Going to the Witwicky residence, Ironhide was urinated upon by a rodent. This unpleasant situation was made worse by Sam Witwicky's refusal to let him shoot it. He also suggested shooting the parents, as they were interfering with Sam's search for Captain Witwicky's glasses. Optimus reminded him that they don't hurt humans, and scolded his weapons expert, to which Ironhide responded that he merely thought it should remain an option.

In the final battle at Mission City, Ironhide and the other Autobots fought to hold off the Decepticons while Sam made his way to a rooftop where he could pass the All Spark to a military helicopter. He did an unnecessary series of somersaults to avoid some missile fire and totally scared the crap out of a lady sitting in the middle of the street. Then again, if you're sitting in the middle of the crossfire between two trigger happy robots, survival may not be a priority.

After the destruction of Megatron and the All Spark, Ironhide gave Captain Lennox a ride home.

:Ironhide transforms into a modified black 2006 GMC Topkick 6500 four-wheel drive pickup truck. The two exhaust smokestacks behind the rear cabin have been shortened from the real scaled length and the prototype due to safety and durability reasons, but otherwise the vehicle mode is very accurate to the real truck... well, aside from the fact Ironhide's massive missile launchers are quite visible underneath the vehicle.

:Ironhide features an Automorph gimmick in his legs during transformation: As the user swings down his feet, all of the panels that make up his legs automaticaly shift and fold into place. This gimmick does not affect Ironhide's articulation. The instructions omit the exact positioning of the roof panels and rear window on his back, confusingly.

:In robot mode, Ironhide is quite accurate to his CGI design, though obviously simplified for toy practicality. Contrary to appearances, he features full standard up-down and lateral shoulder articulation, as well as articulation in his elbows, hips and knees. His arm-mounted cannons are inactive while mounted on both arms. However, detaching the left arm cannon and combining it with the right arm creates a huge functional missile launcher that is almost as big as Ironhide himself. The missile launching mechanism itself isn't the typical spring-loaded button design, instead relying on a pressure-launch system to fire the missiles from the four barrels.

Bludgeon killed Catilla, a former Decepticon turned Autobot causing ex-Decepticon Carnivac who loosely allied himself with the Autobot "Survivors" group to hunt Bludgeon to avenge Catilla's death.

He later took on the leadership of Thunderwing's new Mayhem Attack Squad, sent to slay the newly-resurrected Jazz, Bumblebee, and Grimlock. However, alongside the Rescue Patrol, the Mayhems were foiled, and inadvertently awakened the slumbering Primus in the process. During the subsequent battle against Unicron, Bludgeon served as an advisor to Scorponok, and battled against Unicronian cultists on Cybertron. After Unicron's defeat and Scorponok's death, Bludgeon became leader of the Decepticons, and abandoned the ruined Cybertron to the Autobots. Alongside his lieutenant Krok, Bludgeon and the Decepticons invaded and pillaged the planet Klo. The Autobots attempted to stop them, but were routed by the Decepticons until the arrival of Optimus Prime, the Neo-Knights, and The Last Autobot. Their combined assault decimated the Decepticons and sent them into retreat.

Following a brief exile, Bludgeon created a large planet-like spacecraft known as the Warworld, which functioned as a vessel for pirating resources throughout the galaxy. Bludgeon then made a bid to lure Optimus Prime to Earth to steal the Autobot Creation Matrix so life could be granted to a new generation of Decepticon warriors. The plan involved a full-scale attack on Earth and did succeed in drawing Optimus Prime to Earth's defense, but not before Bludgeon was confronted by the newly-rebuilt Megatron, who wanted command of the Decepticons for himself once more. In a brief skirmish, Megatron decapitated Bludgeon's shell and destroyed his inner robot, killing him. The victorious Decepticon leader subsequently displayed Bludgeon's severed head in the Warworld.
Dreamwave Generation 1 comics
During the so-called 'Dark Ages' of the Autobot/Decepticon conflict, Bludgeon, alongside Bugly and Mindwipe, was a disciple of the mysterious being known as The Fallen. Together with him, they captured a number of Transformers in order to perform a bizarre ceremony at Cybertron's core, but were eventually foiled by Jetfire and Grimlock. Bludgeon was stopped from alerting The Fallen of the impending allied attack on the Well of All Sparks by a teleporting Skywarp.

Dreamwave Armada comics
An alternate universe version of Bludgeon later appeared as one of Unicron's heralds in Dreamwave's comic in their cross-over storyline "Worlds Collide," along with Thunderwing, Scourge, Dirge, and Galvatron. This Bludgeon was also a martial artist, but unlike Bludgeon's verbose incarnation in Marvel Comics, this incarnation seemed to be mute. After his Pretender shell is destroyed, he is blown up when Jetfire detonates the Decepticon headquarters that they have taken over.

IDW Comics
Bludgeon is the leader of a team of Decepticons bent on restoring the wasted Cybertron to its former glory by resurrecting Thunderwing, the Decepticon scientist who became the avatar of the Cybertronian cataclysm. Him and his team of G1 Pretenders (Iguanus, Finback, Skullgrin, and Bomb-Burst) believed that in reawakening Thunderwing and turning him loose, the mass sacrifice of worlds would allow the rebirth of Cybertron. They also delved into the outlawed bio-graft experiments pioneered by Thunderwing, in an attempt to create super-shells of their own.

spoiler

When the Wreckers attacked Bludgeon's base by surprise, Iguanus escaped to the bio-graft chamber to find Bludgeon - only to find the cult leader having donned full Pretender armor, giving him a G1 Shell look which is presumably transformable. However, in Bludgeon's rush the shell was not mentally aligned, causing a psychic backlash that took down the Decepticon before the Wreckers even found him. It is unclear whether Bludgeon's mind survived, but if it did it is apparently trapped in torment.

Bludgeon's 'original' mode was vastly overhauled for Stormbringer, evoking much more clearly the more recognisable skull-face and helmet. His shell bore a great resemblance to that of G1, only like Thunderwing's it seems that it may be able to transform into a tank.

Classics
When the live-action Transformers film was pushed back from November 2006 to July 2007, Hasbro needed to create a filler line to bridge the newly created gap in their product offerings. That bridge was a revisitation of the original Generation 1 characters, dubbed Classics.

Later, Mini-Cons which were originally meant for the end of the Cybertron line and Generation 1-inspired Legends redecoes were also added to expand the line further.

Although no original animation or full-length comic fiction is planned for the line, the Fun Publications Official Transformers Fan Club Magazine comic will be utilizing the Classics in their 2007 story-arc and setting them in a continuation of the old Generation 1 Marvel Comics universe (A version of this universe that includes everything up until the end of the original Marvel run, but excludes the events of the Generation 2 book that followed, taking things in a new direction instead.)

What counts as Classics?
The Classics toyline is a little tricky to define because some of the items which one would think belong to it -- the Magnus/Skywarp two-pack for instance which redecoes two Classics figures -- do not actually say "Classic" anywhere on their packaging. Even the toys that are definitely "real" Classics toys only have the word on one panel of their packaging as a prefix to their size class ("Classic Deluxe" or "Classic Voyager").

For simplicity, SITENAME is considering all toys that come in the Classics-style packaging to be Classics toys, even if they do not self-identify as such. Those toys include:

*Prime vs. Megatron Ultimate Battle set
*Magnus vs. Skywarp Battle for Autobot City set
*20th Anniversary Prime redeco
*Mini-Cons (the Mini-Con sets have been referred to as Classics toys on Hasbro's website, but not on the packaging)

Future?
With the upcoming movie toyline and the new series "Heroes" to follow it, the fate of the Classics line is currently unknown. While it is true that Hasbro has gone on record to say that they would like to make some other figures for the line (even going as far as creating concept art for an updated Cosmos figure), with the massive amounts of merchandise being created for the movie and the inevitable new line of figures that will come with Heroes, it seems that the Classics will not continue for the time being. Though response to the figures has been very positive, it was credited as a line to fill the shelves between Cybertron and the movie. Just as the Alternators line was put on hold (save for the release of Rumble and Ravage), it doesn't seem as though Hasbro will push three separate toylines (movie, Heroes, Classics) all at once. However, given the overall positive reception to the line, it is not implausible that the line will continue in the future.

There is also speculation that the 2007 BotCon exclusives may be redecos of Classics figures, potentially as well-known characters (such as a Starscream redeco as Thundercracker).
:Sunstorm is a Decepticon in the Generation 1 continuity family.

Bright colors are nature's way of saying "Do not touch." Nature's got nothin' on Sunstorm. Come too close, and circuits will short, steel housing will begin to melt, and psyches will break as the mind struggles to comprehend.

Science would explain that his body is aflame in radiation. Sunstorm believes that he is the living embodiment of the Will of Primus, placed by the divine in this universe to deal righteous judgment on the blasphemous. His judgment is swift, painful, relentless, and punctuated with the recitation of Holy Writ. His power is only surpassed by his conviction.

Fiction
Animated continuity
Sunstorm was one of the Decepticon jets on Cybertron four million years ago. He shot at the Autobots Wheeljack and Bumblebee when they came near, and that's about it.

(Note: The character of Sunstorm was based retroactively on the orange jet (pictured at left) who appears in More Than Meets the Eye, Part 1. In the episode "Divide and Conquer", a different, all-yellow jet appears as part of a trio of Decepticon "rainmakers". Chances are, this version is not Sunstorm, even taking into consideration the haphazard coloring typically given to generic Seekers.)

Dreamwave comics continuity
Shockwave's experiments to fit a solar-powered fusion reactor into cloned Decepticon warriors reached their fruition in Sunstorm, a clone of the treacherous Starscream. Sunstorm's structure has been augmented to endure the enormous stresses involved. He was the perfect soldier; he possessed the ability to manipulate electromagnetic energy, enhanced regenerative capabilities, and a blank slate of a mind waiting to be written according to Shockwave's design.

When the Autobots took New Iacon from Shockwave, he hurriedly uploaded the compressed contents of the supercomputer Vector Sigma to multiple locations, including the hidden cloning lab near the Epsilon border where Sunstorm lay, awaiting instructions. The upload overwhelmed the lab's mainframe, spilling over into the only other available receptacle - Sunstorm. War and Peace

Fleeing the fall of New Iacon, Decepticons Runabout and Runamuck broke into the Epsilon lab, unaware of its importance, intending to use is as a safehouse. After Runamuck amused himself by frying the lab's Minispy attendant, the duo accidentally awakened Sunstorm, who fried them… rather badly before his scrambled programming compelled him to depart, making his way to Earth.

Flying down to Earth, he tried to get Starscream to join him in his crusade, though Starscream believed his clone to be completely insane. Sunstorm battled with a number of Autobots, including Omega Supreme, eventually uncovering an enormous well of energy deep below the ocean, sealed with a mechanical door bearing a Cybertronian symbol. Jetfire and Bumblebee fought to stop him from unleashing whatever power the well held, until Jetfire, sensing that Sunstorm's internal fusion reactor was growing increasingly unstable, flew the overzealous seeker into orbit. Sunstorm's reactor went critical and exploded violently, completely obliterating both of them. Ascension

Sunstorm's almost supernatural durability was credited to his augmented molecular structure, similar to that of electrum. When Ratchet's Energy Siphon suppressed the effect, he was eaten away from within by the destructive energies of his own power source.

Universe
An alternate-universe version of Sunstorm was one of Megazarak's loyal inner circle. His radioactive condition was the result of an accident at the manufacturing facility during his birth.

(Note: Sunstorm did not actually appear in any true Universe fiction. He was given a bio in the 3H Fan Club magazine that places him as one of Megazarak's elite warriors. His bio uses the Generation 1 character design for him, rather than the Universe Sunstorm toy, who is by all indications an altogether different character.)
What can really be said about someone whose only idea of strategy is to smash into things with his head? In Ramjet's defense he's specifically built to survive such midair collisions and his prey most definitely is not. The strategy can be frighteningly effective, since no one expects a fighter jet to ram them. Ramjet has a tendency to regard the sky as belonging only to him, and will frequently ram even neutral or friendly targets. Though he is built to take such hits frequent collisions and crashes can still take their toll on his internal mechanisms.

Ramjet had some excellent adventures during the Generation 1 cartoon series.

Once, Ramjet was thrown back into the Medieval times and headbutted a knight, then participated in a jousting competition against Spike and Warpath. Way! A Decepticon Raider in King Arthur's Court

Ramjet appeared to have been destroyed by Ultra Magnus in part 5 of "The Five Faces of Darkness;" however, this is highly disputable due to the animation errors that plagued Season 3.

Marvel Comics continuity
Generation 1
Until Straxus was assassinated, Ramjet worked under the Decepticon overlord on Cybertron. The Bridge to Nowhere! Soon after, Ramjet, Thrust, and Dirge were given Earth jet forms specified by Megatron and were recruited to the Decepticons' Earth forces over the Space Bridge when the Decepticons attempted to exploit Hoover Dam for energy. They were defeated by Superion. Aerialbots over America!
Generation 2
When Megatron returned and overthrew Bludgeon's command, Ramjet was aggravated that Megatron brought a revived Starscream with him. Starscream was arrogant, loud, and would never shut up, so why didn't Megatron leave him dead? Seriously, what was Megatron's problem? Tales of Earth, Part Three

: The original Ramjet toy was a retool of the Diaclone "Jet Robo Acrobat-Type" F-15 Eagle that was used for Starscream, Thundercracker and Skywarp, with new wings, and new bombs. He is otherwise identical to the other Decepticon jets aside from colour.

: In robot mode his official instructions has the user pulling down his nose cone to complete his head transformation, like Starscream. However, Ramjet, as well as Thrust and Dirge's television incarnations depict them as having their heads untransformed, leaving a distinctive 'conehead' shape to their appearance. This has lead many owners to do the same thing, to differentiate the three later Decepticon jets from the three earlier ones.

Generation 2
* Ramjet (1993, 1994)

: For the Generation 2 line, Ramjet was redecoed with the purple replacing white, black replacing burgundy and light blue replacing the original black. He also features new firing missile launchers and a sound effects box which is mounted above his engines. These parts were also used on the Generation 2 release of Starscream.
: Classics Ramjet transforms into a modified fighter jet based off the hull of an F-15 Eagle. Like his original Generation 1 toy, he is a retool of Starscream, with a new nose cone/head, new wings and new projectiles for his missile launchers. Unlike Starscream, his shoulder movement is unimpeded due to a lack of wings behind his shoulders.

Ramjet appeared to have been destroyed by Ultra Magnus in part 5 of "The Five Faces of Darkness;" however, this is highly disputable due to both the common animation errors that plagued the series and the fact that he later appeared in the episode Ghost in the Machine.

Mirage is what humans call "old money." Before the war, he was a member of affluent Cybertronian society, with his own large estate and high-priced friends. He enjoyed the finer things in life: vintage energon, swank evening events, and turbofox hunts on the grounds. But when the war started, he was forced to choose sides and found himself banded with a group of commoners he didn't really understand.

The other Autobots don't trust Mirage. He feels the war, even after all these millions of years, is beneath him. War is not, after all, how civilized, erudite beings conduct themselves. He often questions the Autobots' violent means, and not-so-secretly hopes they and the Decepticons can get along. Because of this, he has been labelled by a few others as a Decepticon sympathizer.

Although the details vary by continuity, Mirage has the ability to create illusions which typically either render him invisible or make him appear to be somewhere he isn't.

He sounds like Dean Martin.
Generation 1
(Note: Events from the UK-only comic stories are in italics.)

Mirage was one of the Autobots on board the Ark when it crashed, and was subsequently reactivated in 1984. At first, Mirage was reluctant to full-on attack his Decepticon opponents, instead trying to reason with them. However, after a battle with the relentless Ravage, Mirage learned that sometimes diplomacy is not an option.

During an accident on the Ark, Brawn suffered an extreme neuro-shock, causing him to rebel and turn against his teammates. Mirage helped the Autobots hunt him down and tranquelize him. This same accident also amplified Mirage's ability to create illusions, which he later used to trick the Decepticons into believing that a duel between Brawn and Starscream ended with Brawn's death. The Decepticons felt totally stupid.

Long after, he was blown to pieces by Octane during an Arctic battle arranged by Starscream and repaired in time to be destroyed again in New York City by Starscream himself (empowered by the Underbase).

Generation 2
Disobeying Optimus Prime's orders, Grimlock led a covert team (which included Mirage) onto the Cybertronian Empire ship Twilight to defeat Jhiaxus and his army of "evolved-Decepticons." Grimlock's plan was an utter failure, ending in Red Alert's death and the Autobots' capture. Mirage was destroyed by enemy fire during the following prison break.

Animated continuity
:Voice actor: Frank Welker (US), Takurō Kitagawa (Japan)

Mirage was part of the bridge crew of the Ark when it crash-landed on Earth four million years ago. A volcanic eruption in 1984 awakened the Arks inhabitants, including Mirage, who was reformatted by Teletraan I to have a terrestrial alt-mode of a Formula-1 racer. With the battle against the Decepticons now transplanted to Earth, Mirage still hated warfare. He longed to return to Cybertron and turn simply his back to the evil Decepticons, but his loyalty to Optimus Prime kept him in the fight.

Mirage was instrumental in stopping the Decepticons from returning to Cybertron after amassing enough energon from Earth. The Decepticons had constructed a new star cruiser, and were in the process of flying home to tip the scales of the war in their favor. Mirage used his cloaking ability to sneak aboard the Decepticon ship. He uncloaked and opened fire, blasting away at the ship's controls. He then bailed from the doomed cruiser, floating back to Earth's surface on a parasail as the Decepticons crashed into the ocean. Optimus Prime asked Mirage why he -- homesick and war-weary Autobot that he was -- did not hitch the ride back home. Mirage responded, affirming his loyalty to the Autobots, "The ship was... full." More Than Meets the Eye, Part 3

Mirage’s role in the Autobots’ battles on Earth was a distinctly minimal one, leaving him confined to the background on the battlefield, or not present at all. In early 1985, however, the spotlight shone on Mirage again when Cliffjumper suspected him of disloyalty. The discovery of a Decepticon installation in a sector Mirage had recently observed caused Cliffjumper to leap the incorrect conclusion that he was a traitor to the Autobots, having concealed the information. After a battle with the Decepticons, Mirage risked the trust of his comrades by sneaking away to perform a plan of his own, framing the Decepticons for stealing Energon Cubes from the Insecticons. Spotting carrying the cubes by Cliffjumper, Mirage’s guilt seemed all but confirmed, and before he could reveal his innocence, he was captured and brainwashed by one of Bombshell’s mind-controlling cerebro-shells. Under Bombshell’s control, Mirage led the Autobots into an ambush, but at the battle’s end, the assorted manipulations were revealed and Cliffjumper apologised to Mirage. Traitor

Towards the end of the year, Mirage was among the team of five Autobots who disguised themselves as the Stunticons, with Mirage’s alternate mode making him the perfect choice to masquerade as Drag Strip. Penetrating the Decepticon camp, the Autobots ran into trouble when the real Stunticons arrived, trying to prove their identities by forming Menasor. With a combination of Windcharger’s magnetic powers and Mirage’s illusion-creating ability, the Autobots were able to appear as Menasor too. Though the deception was soon revealed, they were still able to thwart the Decepticons’ plans. Masquerade

(Mirage was absent from the events of 2005 and 2006 without explanation; however, a storyboarded scene from Transformers: The Movie featuring Mirage was cut from the finished film. Amidst the transformation of Autobot City, Mirage was to ambush the Insecticon Bombshell and was then fired upon by Megatron. Whether or not this would have killed Mirage is not made clear, but given the film's casual bodycount, it seems highly probable.)

Robot Masters (Japan-only)
Dreamwave comics continuity
When Shockwave came to Earth and announced that the Autobot/Decepticon wars were over and that the two factions had been united, Mirage was one of the first to fall in with the new regime. The rest of the Autobots were wary of this development, and so a few (especially Cliffjumper) considered Mirage a traitor.

Mirage quickly realigned himself with the Autobot cause when Shockwave's true plan was revealed, and Cliffjumper seemed to forgive him, as Mirage had saved Cliffjumper from Dirge by sneaking up on him invisibly.

: Mirage was part of the original 1984 Autobot car assortment. His mold was originally used for a Diaclone F-1 Ligier JS-11 racer. The toy was specifically designed to work with the launcher mechanism contained in the Optimus Prime / Battle Convoy trailer. This toy is easily broken at the waist piviot. The labels on the toy are references to several real world company. The largest name, Citanes, is a deliberate corruption of Gitanes, a French cigaratte company (quite unusual for a child's toy, but not the only cigarette reference in Diaclone). The toy included Gitanes' logo of a dancing gypsy woman on what ends up as Mirage's belt in robot form. "Ligier" is the name of the company that manufactures the car type, while "elf" is a reference to a French oil company that has since merged with TotalFina to become TotalFinaElf.

: Hasbro and/or Takara have announced that the mold for Mirage is either lost or damaged, so a reissue is unlikely. Mirage was also included in the 1986 Good Bye Convoy giftset; this was the final release of the mold, making Mirage the only one of the original Autobots to not have been reissued in some form.

Generation 2
* Mirage (Go-Bot, 1995)
: Mirage was released in 1995 as a black and yellow recolor of the Go-Bot Double Clutch. He was also planned to be released as a flipchanger, but the Generation 2 line was cancelled to make way for Beast Wars. The unreleased mold was first used in Machine Wars.

: This mold was also used to make Robots in Disguise Mirage.

: Mirage's form in Machine Wars transforms into an blue and white Formula racer. Like the other Machine Wars basics, the toy is a flipchanger (having a one-step spring-loaded transformation), and his weapons are hidden in his alt mode. Unlike most of the Machine Wars toys, the head looks very similar to his G1 form. This is because the mold was originaly designed as Mirage for Generation 2.

: This mold was also used to make Prowl and Skid-Z.
: Japanese ID number: RM-03

: This toy used the Machine Wars mold, but in much more Generation 1 colors.

: Because of legal reasons, "Ligier" could not be used for the name of the Robot Masters toy, so "Rijie", which has the same pronuciation in Japan, was used instead. Curiously, the toy's instructions still identify it as "Ligier".

Alternators
* Mirage (Alternator, 2006)

: Alternators Mirage transforms into a finely detailed 1:24 scale replica of a Ford GT, featuring opening doors, engine bay and trunk, with a realistic interior. As with most Alternators, his car body is mostly unpainted, but the metallic-flake deep blue plastic makes this hard to see.

: Featuring an innovatively different robot mode, Mirage is not a straight re-interpretation of the original Mirage's robot mode, due to the completely different types of vehicles. But coincidentally the Ford GT's hood features a shape that echoes a F1-type racing car's nose and front spoiler. His engine's turbocharger forms two seperate hand guns.

: Mirage was never released in Japan under the Binaltech line, but was redecoed into Hot Rodimus for the Kiss Players line.

Universe
*Mirage (Spy Changer, 2006)

: For Universe, Mirage is identical to the last Kay-Bee exclusive redeco of Robots In Disguise Mirage, transforming into a translucent green Lola Indy car. He was available only on an individual card from discount chains like The Dollar Store.

Classics
*Mirage (Classics Deluxe, 2006)

:Classics Mirage was released in November 2006 in wave 2, along with the shortpacked Grimlock. He transforms into a closed-canopy Formula racer concept car. Mirage's paint details contain a few Transformers injokes in the form of sponsor logos such as "Witwicky Sparkplugs" and "Lithonian Drivetrain." Additionally, his racing number is still 26, as it was on the original toy. Other logos, which include "Plasma Injection Energy" and "F.P. Racing," refer to "pie" and the initials of the deco artist's super-secret non-gay friendship cult, respectively.

:His robot mode is a lithe upgrade to his original form, now capable of a wide range of motion. The front detaches to become a handheld electro-disruptor weapon which is said to be able to create illusions and allow him to appear invisible. (This is a reconciliation of Mirage's illusion-creation ability from his original tech spec profile and his invisibility power from the animated series.)

Devastator is an immensely powerful warrior, and in that sense the combination of the Constructicons into a merged being is a huge success. Mentally, on the other hand, he's very much less than the sum of his parts. Devastator's primitive psyche is limited to only the thoughts and actions on which all his components can agree, which results in raging bouts of destructive fury. Given the sheer power Devastator brings to these rages, Megatron has no complaints.

Nominally he is composed of the six robots...
Fiction
Animated continuity
Generation 1 cartoon
:Voice Actor: Arthur Burghardt (US), Seizō Katō (Japan)

The Constructicons did not initially have the power to merge into Devastator. That ability was given to them by Megatron after he warped their minds into servitude with the robo-smasher.

Millions of years later, in 1984, Megatron had the Constructicons built on Earth to steal high-tech electronic components for his Power chip rectifier furnace, as well as tunelling under the Ark to destroy Teletraan I. Teletraan I, sensing the imminent danger, activated the Dinobots. The Dinobots responded and started pounding on the Constructicons, opening up a lava channel in the process. The battle not going in their favor, the Constructicons pulled out one last trick and combined into the super warrior, Devastator.

The returning Autobots saw the battle, but were unable to help (due to losing a tournament which prevented them from interfering with the Decepticons). Inside the Ark, Teletraan-I was able to show that Megatron had cheated and the Autobots rushed outside to help the Dinobots. Distracted by one of Hound’s holograms, Devastator was shot by Optimus Prime and fell apart into the lava. Heavy Metal War.

Devastator was continuously called upon during battle for many years to come. Some of his adventures include scaling the Empire State Building like King Kong, helping Grapple and Hoist build their solar tower, being brainwashed by Wheeljack's dominator disks into serving the Autobots and pummeling the Dinobots again during the battle of Autobot City.

The Transformer manga
Zone OVA and manga
Voice Actor: Hirohiko Kakegawa (Japan)

(Devastator is referred to as one of the Nine Great Demon Generals. This terminology, coupled with the presence of the previously deceased Black Zarak in their ranks and Violen Jygar's supernatural origins, could mean that Devastator died previously to Zone and was likewise brought back to life. However, this is unconfirmed, meaning that Violen Jygar may have simply recruited the still-living Devastator to be a General.)

Devastator was selected by Violen Jygar as one of his 9 Decepticon Demon-Generals. Gifted with a new bitchin' drill-weapon and armor, Violen Jygar sent Devastator to the Earth to steal the Zodiac before the Autobots could get it. Devastator drilled deep within the planet, reaching the Zodiac's chamber, and went toe-to-toe with Dai Atlas. He managed to get the Zodiac first and pass it off to King Poseidon. Devastator had the upper hand in battle until Dai Atlas opened a vein of hot lava upon the Decepticon. Devastator was washed-away in the molten magma, apparantly killed by it.

Along the way, he demolished the World Trade Center. That terrorist scum.

Marvel Comics continuity
Dreamwave comics continuity
After Megatron freed the other Decepticons from Adam Rook's control, he sent Devastator down the west coast of North America. Along the way, Devastator destroyed a US Navy submarine, before arriving at his destination, San Francisco.

Devastator helped destroy the city until he was initially stopped by Superion, and finally put into stasis lock when Optimus Prime shot him point-blank in the head. His fate was left unconfirmed, but he was last seen falling to the bottom of the sea, so it is likely that he was put into terminal stasis.
Toys
Generation 1
*Devastator (Giftset, 1985)
: Japanese ID number: D-37

: Normally, Devastator could only be assembled by buying all six individual Constructicons with the additional large-scale weapons components that were assigned to them. However, six-robot gift sets were made available in many markets, including the US, Japan, and several European countries.

: Devastor's forearms are also spring-loaded missile launchers, able to fire his fists as well as his drill attachments. He also comes armed with a large purple laser rifle.

: Unlike the later Scramble City-style combiners, Devastator's limbs cannot be rearranged into any other configuations.

*Devastator with Scorpulator (Action Master, 1990)

: A non-transforming action figure compatible with any other Action Master vehicle or accessory, Devastator's sculpt is a combination of the original animation model and several more toy-based elements. He came with his small animal partner Scorpulator.

Generation 2
*Devastator (1993)

: During Generation 2, the Constructicons were only available as individuals, never as a giftset. The team was released in two different colors, initially in yellow, then later in bright orange. All individual members are tampographed with the G2 Decepticon symbol and the words 'Decepticon'.

:Other than colour scheme and the lack of rubsigns, G2 Devastator is functionally identical to the original release.

: For Classics, Devastator is a redeco of the Energon combiner Constructicon Maximus. He was available only in a full five-pack, exclusive to Wal-Mart stores.

: Since the original combiner contains only five robots, the Constructicon team here contains only Bonecrusher, Hightower (who may or may not be related to Hook and/or Mixmaster as his bio seems to combine attributes of both), Long Haul, Scavenger and Scrapper. Also, because of the combination method used, he can also use any of the Energon-series limb-robots.
Trivia
* Though a yellow version of the Constructicons were released in the European market at the tail end of Generation 1, they did not come with any of the parts to form Devastator. In fact, Scavenger and Hook had the connector parts on their actual toys removed.

* It has been rumored that the orange Generation 2 Constructions were a Kay-Bee Toys exclusive, but this is unconfirmed.
:The Wreckers are an Autobots combat unit in the Generation 1 continuity family.

The Wreckers are a special task force, generally composed of the best and the toughest die-hard fighters around. The Wreckers tend to be a close-knit combat unit that considers themselves the best of the best. They're often called in to fight when the odds of success are slim.

Marvel Comics continuity
The Wreckers were introduced in UK continuity (neither the team, nor any of its members really appeared in the US stories) during the Target: 2006 storyline. They were originally led by an Autobot named Impactor, who was succeeded by Springer.

After the team's decimation during the events of Time Wars the survivors joined together with other "outsiders" both Autobot and and Decepticon to form the (aptly named) Survivors.

Universe: The Wreckers comics
The Wreckers were still, by tradition, considered an Autobot force, despite being on Maximal-era Cybertron, and accepted even Decepticons and Predacons into their ranks following the takeover of Cybertron by Megatron and his Vehicon armies.
The Wreckers split from the Autobot forces after the disappearance of Optimus Prime in a space bridge explosion. Led by Springer, they clashed with Ratbat's Ultracons in the Tagan Heights for a time before reuniting with the Autobots and the Lightning-Strike-Coalition immediately prior to the Age of Internment.
Later on, during Shockwave's reign on Cybertron, the Wreckers were a small but elite task force of Autobots dedicated to keeping the peace wherever (and however) necessary.

Members

* Ultra Magnus (leader)
* Topspin
* Twin Twist
* Roadbuster
* Whirl

When the Stunticons were released from imprisonment in Cybertron's detention banks, the Wreckers responded in kind. This, however, was after Menasor had already wiped out the Omnibots and defeated Defensor. In the battle, both Whirl and Roadbust were killed before Ultra Magnus took charge and brought Menasor down.
"Of course it's a lost cause. That's why we're here!" - Springer

The Wreckers are the Autobots who get called in when the odds of success are nonexistent, but the job needs to be done anyway. Assigned to Varas Centralus after the Decepticon infiltration on that planet went to Phase Six, they were pulled out and sent back to Cybertron at the order of Optimus Prime when the Autobot leader suspected that Thunderwing may have been behind the disappearance of the Calabi-Yau.

The Wreckers arrived just in time to save Nosecone and Afterburner. They then proceeded to take Bludgeon's team apart without breaking a sweat.
(Note: Their starship Xantium appears able to transform into a robot and thus may also constitute a member of the team.)
