Synopsis
While flying through space in Astrotrain, Megatron, Starscream, and Rumble discover a planet with the Autobot symbol visible from orbit. Heading to investigate, they find a deserted city and a pillar inscribed with Ancient Autobot. Activating a recorded message, they are warned to leave, or never return to Cybertron... all in rhyme. Disregarding the warnings, the Decepticons discover a Lightning Bug. While attempting to move it, they set it off, causing the ceiling above them to be destroyed. Megatron is pleased—the Autobots have created a weapon that will allow him to destroy them. While leaving the planet, an asteroid follows Astrotrain (look, just go with the flow) and Megatron destroys it. Bad idea, as the debris penetrates Astrotrain, with one piece hitting Megatron in the shoulder. Heading for their their base, Starscream removes the rock, only to discover that Megatron's shoulder is covered in ruuusttt.

In New York City, Perceptor is being awarded for his creation of corrostop, a new solution which prevents rust and corrosion. The Autobots plan to spray all the world's monuments with it, but for the moment, they only have enough to spray the Statue of Liberty. Meanwhile, Megatron's health is deteriorating rapidly, and he orders the Stunticons to bring him Perceptor. Heading for Liberty Island, the Decepticons capture Perceptor and load him into Blitzwing, with the Aerialbots in pursuit. The Autobot jets follow the kidnappers all the way to the Decepticon base, but the Coneheads use the Lightning Bug to drive them off.

Taken within their base, Perceptor is horrified to discover that Megatron is covered in rust. The Decepticon leader offers Perceptor a chance to end the war in exchange for curing him. As Perceptor analyzes the Decepticon, he discovers that Megatron is infected with a metallic plague and that the lightning bug is exacerbating the condition. Perceptor offers Megatron corrostop, which manages to wash the rust away. Megatron declares that the Decepticons are about to be cured.

At the Autobot base, the Aerialbots are explaining what happened to Optimus Prime, when Megatron contacts the Autobot leader. Megatron says that Prime has until noon to reach Perceptor, or sunlight focused through his lens will ignite the fuse on a bomb and blow him to pieces. Despite knowing it's a trap, Prime takes all the Autobots with him to rescue Perceptor. As the Autobots arrive, Perceptor warns them to keep away, but Prime pulls Perceptor away once the bomb ignites and explodes, only for Perceptor to reveal that he is infected with Cosmic Rust.

Returning to the base, the Autobots query Teletraan I, who tells them of the fate of Antilla, the world the Decepticons visited. Then, the Autobots notice that they're infected with Cosmic Rust as well. Worse, Megatron is using the Lightning Bug to make the plague spread. Their only hope is corrostop, but Cosmos and Blaster have discovered that Ingredient X, an important ingredient for making corrostop, is gone. Wheeljack suspects that they can use the matter duplicator to make more, if he and Perceptor can fix it. Meanwhile, Ratchet does his best to stem the tide, but they're fading fast. Megatron is watching via Laserbeak, loving every minute of it, only to learn that the matter duplicator now works, thanks to <s>kicking</s> a unique solution provided by Perceptor. All they need is some corrostop from the Statue of Liberty to replicate.

Heading to the Statue of Liberty, Megatron orders the Stunticons to form Menasor and use the Lightning Bug to destroy the statue. However, the Autobots are already there, and the Aerialbots form Superion. The Autobot combiner is able to defeat Menasor and destroy the Lightning Bug. Megatron, out of ideas, orders a retreat. Bumblebee is quite pleased: they not only saved themselves, but also Lady Liberty.

Notes
Animation or technical glitches
* At one point, the holographic warning bot's arms reach outside of range of the ancient projector.
* Rumble "helps" Starscream with the lightning bug by pulling on Starscream's knee!
* In the very next shot, Starscream is behind the lightning bug instead of to its left.
* In the shot that pans over the Autobots spraying down the Statue of Liberty, Gears is colored in Rumble's blue and purple.
* Apparently, Blitzwing is large enough in flight mode to carry the Stunticons and Perceptor.
* Silverbolt orders the Aerialbots to "duck" to avoid the lightning bug's beam. Note that they're flying at the time!
* When Megatron's left hand falls to pieces from the rust infection, his fusion cannon is attached to his upper arm instead of its usual place on his forearm.
* When he Transforms to roll for Fox Creek Canyon, the side of Optimus' cab is white.
* After arriving at the canyon to rescue Perceptor, Optimus transforms to robot mode, but he has no feet!
* When Prime notes that Teletraan I is infected, he's in front of a panel with a huge, striped, horizontal display area that looks nothing like what's on Teletraan I's main console.
* As Megatron tells Prime that "the cosmic rust has infiltrated your logic circuits," the triangular shapes on his forehead are colored in reverse (they should be black on light gray but are white on dark gray).
* A few shots later, we see the Autobots shooting at the Decepticons from the top of the statue, and there's a robot beneath Prime who has the upper body of Prime (complete with dual windows) and the lower body of Sideswipe. Later, we see that this is supposed to be Ironhide.
* More of a sound editing mistake: when Menasor is attacked by the firepower of the Aerialbots at the Statue of Liberty, parts of Astrotrain's voice (going back to when he is badly damaged by the asteroids en route to Earth with the heat ray) are used instead of Menasor's normal speech.

Continuity errors
* Astrotrain, who got damaged a lot more by the infectious meteor than Megatron, is never shown to be infected. Starscream should likewise be infected, having pulled out the asteroid fragment from Megatron, but again this is never shown. Megatron's statement that "Decepticons—we are about to be cured!" implies that he's not the only victim, though the story focus in general implies that he is.
** Starscream's statement that the repair team would get to Megatron after they work on Astrotrain may imply that the rust infection did work its magic on Astrotrain, even if the finished episode fails to mention it.
* The Stunticons take a ferry over to Perceptor's location instead of just flying there.
* Megatron's left hand falls off (wires and all). Perceptor drips some corrostop onto it and puts it back on his arm, and it works again immediately. Shouldn't there be some welding involved?
* Couldn't Prime have moved the explosives away from the infected and very contagious Perceptor, rather than vice versa? Though the Cosmic Rust seems capable of spreading through the air, Prime could at least try not to get infected.
* According to Teletraan I, the "Lost Legion" of Autobots had already colonized Antilla at the dawn of time. That's a pretty ambitious timetable!
* Jazz and Mirage appear at the end of the episode despite not being part of the last battle (and not showing up throughout the episode, though Mirage is seen for a second during the drive to the canyon).
* Apparently, the Decepticons' entire hope of victory relied on Menasor being able to destroy the Statue of Liberty with the Lightning Bug, and not Menasor's own tendency to smash everything he looks at.
* Speaking of the statue, the Decepticons shoot at it for several minutes (plus the Autobots climb all over it and Optimus hangs off her crown) but it doesn't get a scratch on it. That corrostop must be some powerful stuff!
* Perceptor didn't keep a single drop of corrostop? Not even a laboratory sample? Not even inside the tanks of the spray hoses used to coat the Statue of Liberty?
* Despite its seemingly great potential for all sorts of useful purposes (or mischief, as the Decepticons are well aware of its existence), the Matter Duplicator is never seen again.
* In this episode, Cosmos is able to determine for certain that there is no more Ingredient X in the universe. Yet throughout seasons 2 and 3, it is determined that the Transformers are unable to tell whether and where other rare and important chemicals exist, even when they are on earth, and that they are constantly discovering new planets which they had never seen before.

Real-world references
* Teletraan I calls the fallen Autobot civilization the "13th Legion—the Lost Legion". This could be a reference to the Lost Tribe of Israel, which was also the 13th Tribe.
* Writer Paul Davids mentioned that the idea of a plague spreading amongst the Transformers was inspired in part by the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.

Trivia
* This episode was originally going to be the Generation 1 cartoon's first attempt to introduce the Matrix into its continuity, before The Transformers: The Movie! In the finished episode, Starscream merely laments that none of the Decepticons can read "Ancient Autobot". In the script, however, Megatron can read the language, and translates it, discovering that the Thirteenth Legion came to Antilla during "the first millennium after the creation of the Autobot Matrix". Starscream dates this to five hundred thousand years before they left for Earth (which is to say, 4.5 million years ago). This, of course, would conflict greatly with what we would go on to learn of the Matrix when it was properly introduced, and, indeed, is not even internally consistent with the rest of the script itself, which claims (pretty stupidly) that the legion has been on Antilla since the "dawn of time".
* Megatron coughs while infected with Cosmic Rust, despite not having lungs. Besides which, if the rust got inside him, shouldn't he have to be immersed in corrostop, inside and out?
* One wonders if the reason that the Decepticons haven't yet won the war is that Megatron himself is an enormous pansy. One little chunk of asteroid embedded in his shoulder has him throwing a fit about how terribly wounded he is. Not to mention when his Lightning Bug gets ruined, he orders a retreat despite the Autobots currently being weakened by Cosmic Rust.
* For some reason, Megatron would rather trust Starscream to give him medical attention than, say, anyone else on base.
* Blitzwing is used as a means to transport Decepticons in a way that Astrotrain is usually used. He even mass shifts to become large enough to fit lots of Decepticons the way that Astrotrain does. It does make sense to use Blitzwing since Astrotrain is injured and so this is not an animation mistake, Blitzwing was meant to be used this way.
* Fox Creek Canyon said to be "just three miles from [Autobot] headquarters". The real Fox Creek Canyon is in Idaho near the Wyoming border. This would seem to contradict the Autobot HQ being in Oregon or at Mt. St. Helens. Or maybe Megatron lied about the distance.
* Behind Perceptor at the National Scientific Achievement award can be seen posters of Tokyo Tower, the Washington Monument, Seoul Tower, the British houses of parliament, and the Eiffel Tower, but oddly enough not the Statue of Liberty.
* A UK VHS video release (paired with the episode "Masquerade") mis-spelled the title as "Comic Rust". Comic indeed.
* Gadgets and powers:
** Starscream demonstrates the ability to retract his hand and replace it with a pincer, which he uses to remove the meteor fragment lodged in Megatron.

:Astrotrain is a Decepticon from the Generation 1 continuity family.

Astrotrain loves to sow confusion. To this end, his Triple Changer abilities serve him well. Nothing pleases him more than confronting an Autobot in a dark corner and making him wonder if he's up against one Decepticon or two. He craves having this power over others. Single-minded, you may say, but when most of your time is spent transporting troops around, you have to take your jollies where you can. He wants more from life, but it's either fly the other Decepticons around, or get scrapped by them.

He also craves having power over a massive army of train drones. Follow your dreams, Astrotrain. Follow your dreams.

The Transformers cartoon
:Voice actor: Jack Angel (English), Takurō Kitagawa (Japanese), Jorge García (Latin American)

Astrotrain arrived on Earth during the second year of Megatron's campaign to conquer the planet and its energy resources. His activities prior to that point remain unclear, but he was first seen guarding human slaves in an energy mine following the Decepticon takeover of Central City. When the Autobots returned from a brief exile in space, Astrotrain and his comrades were defeated and sent packing. Megatron's Master Plan, Part 2

He once transported Megatron to the moon where he and the Decepticons' leader attempted to jam Earth's radio waves. The attempt was interrupted by the arrival of Omega Supreme, Spike, Carly, and Optimus Prime. Astrotrain engaged in a bad pun, accused Omega Supreme of being too outdated to catch him, and then was the victim of a Cybertronian's impression of a sandworm (see image) before being thrown a few planetary diameters. Blaster Blues

Typically one of the more easy-going among the Decepticons, even Astrotrain isn't above letting a little power go to his head. While tracking Cosmos, he shot down the Autobot, who had been on a fuel scouting mission, and managed to trick the people of Titan into believing that he was one of their Sky Gods, so that they would mine energy crystals for him and the Decepticons. Astrotrain used Jero, a corrupt High Priest who was as fanatical as he was ruthless, to further his ends. However, the Autobots Jazz and Perceptor arrived aboard Omega Supreme looking for Cosmos. Omega Supreme was virtually out of fuel after the trip, but the Autobots soon managed to refuel him using the energy crystals. Knowing that he, Starscream and Thrust alone couldn't beat Omega Supreme, Astrotrain destroyed the crystals in a fit of pique before flying off, leaving Jero to die like the worm he was. Harsh, Astrotrain, harsh. The God Gambit

Astrotrain was used by Megatron to transport energy rich asteroid ore being mined by the Constructicons in high orbit. Astrotrain maintained his shuttle mode so that Long Haul could load him with cargo. He apparently did not have very keen sensors in that form, as the Autobot Cosmos was able to very clumsily swipe some ore from his open cargo bay, then loudly fell over Astrotrain's side without the Decepticon even reacting. The Secret of Omega Supreme

Astrotrain later transported Ramjet and Dirge to the planet Monacus to check up on Decepticon sympathizer Lord Gyconi. When they learned that Gyconi had captured a number of Autobots and brainwashed them into mindless slaves, the Decepticons tried to stow them aboard Astrotrain to take them back to Megatron. However, their plan was stopped by Smokescreen, Devcon and Slizardo, and the latter two followed Astrotrain into space as he escaped with his comrades. The Gambler

When Deceptitran sent word for assistance in overcoming Tlalakan rebels, Astrotrain transported Megatron and his warriors to that distant world to protect their energon horde. The rebellion gained Transformer aid of their own, though, and Seaspray and friends drove off the Decepticons and led the Tlalakans to freedom. Sea Change

However, the incident on Titan had given Astrotrain a taste of power, and he decided he liked it. With the help of Blitzwing, Astrotrain froze Megatron and Starscream in a sewer system in order to take over the Decepticons. He then created an army of trains to help him rule, thinking it was a good idea. Although he managed to amass a surprisingly large amount of energon cubes, the productive day ended with him flooding the entire city after bursting a water main. Worse, Megatron thawed out. The embarrassment of these incidents forced Astrotrain to creep back into the Decepticon ranks quietly... at fusion cannon point. Triple Takeover

Lord Chumley used Astrotrain's likeness as a lure to capture Tracks and Bumblebee. Megatron later sent the real Astrotrain (as well as Blitzwing) to go negotiate with Chumley so they could team up to annihilate the Autobots. The Triple Changers arrived in time to see Optimus refuse to rescue a distressed young woman. Astrotrain was curious, but Blitzwing fell for the ruse and got stuck, so Astrotrain was left with no other option but going to the castle to free him. On his way there, Astrotrain found Chumley using a robotic scorpion to fight Optimus Prime, and proposed Megatron's deal. Chumley responded by flinging the Decepticon away, hanging him up to the walls, and defusing his weapons. Astrotrain was frustrated and explained himself, but Chumley rejected the notion and claimed he'd rather have the help of an aardvark. But as Prime inched closer, Chumley panicked and freed the Decepticons, who promptly made their getaway. He learned that day, to never trust Decepticons. Prime Target (episode)

Megatron dispatched Astrotrain, Starscream, Ramjet, and Rumble in order to catch the Female Autobots, making up for Shockwave's failure. Running into their leader, Elita One, Astrotrain and Ramjet grabbed her and took her prisoner. When Optimus Prime arrived to rescue Elita, she kicked Astrotrain in the face, forcing him to lose his grip. He recovered and was able to celebrate Prime's apparent disintegration, later got zapped by the duo of Inferno and Firestar, and in shuttle mode he transported the retreating Decepticons away. The Search for Alpha Trion Megatron's next mission for Astrotrain was to go with Thrust and Ramjet to salvage Dirge and his cargo, who crashed in a swamp near a movie set. When they arrived, Astrotrain deployed a pair of claws to haul Dirge back, while a nearby director filmed them. Once they returned to headquarters, Astrotrain informed Megatron of the film crew that was watching them as they carted the device, and the enraged Megatron set out to destroy the film. Hoist Goes Hollywood

Astrotrain transported Megatron, Starscream and Rumble to the lost Autobot colony of Antilla, where they discovered the entire civilization had been wiped out by the deadly Cosmic Rust. Not heeding a holographic warning from the Autobots, Megatron ventured further into the colony and seized an advanced heat ray weapon from its storage chamber. As they left Antilla, a Cosmic Rust spore-filled asteroid appeared to chase after Astrotrain, prompting Megatron to test out of the power of the 'Lightning Bug' weapon on the space rock. The blast obliterated the asteroid, but the shrapnel from the explosion pierced Astrotrain's hull and punctured Megatron's chest plate, infecting him with Cosmic Rust. Oddly enough, Astrotrain was never infected (or no one cared enough to find out). Regardless, the damage was extensive enough to put him out of action for the rest of the episode (and force unseen Decepticon medics to backlog Megatron's reapirs). Cosmic Rust (episode)

Astrotrain witnessed Starscream throw a fit over Megatron's obsession with Shockwave, and was surprised as everyone else when the Seeker shot Megatron in the back. But when Megatron overpowered his subordinate, Astrotrain was disgusted and allowed Starscream to be humiliated. He was then present for a battle with Starscream's new team of Combaticons, but didn't contribute anything in particular. At the end of the day, Megatron ordered Astrotrain to take the traitorous Starscream and the Combaticons to an asteroid floating through space, where they would be banished forever. Starscream's Brigade Astrotrain could be glimpsed on the simulation of Megatron's orbit disruptor cannon, but did not get to actually see it in person. B.O.T. (episode)

In the year 2005, he transported the Decepticons away after getting their aft-sections handed to them at Autobot City. He couldn't make it back to Cybertron with the amount of weight on board, so they tossed some dead weight overboard. After that, Astrotrain served as the ring for the subsequent fight among the Decepticons to replace the ejected Megatron, where the Constructicons formed Devastator inside him (slag, Astrotrain is big!) and Rumble and Frenzy used their piledrivers (slag, Astrotrain is sturdy!) Apparently, they all made it back fine, and Astrotrain was the one to crown Starscream during his coronation as the new Decepticon leader. The Transformers: The Movie

When the Decepticons lost their hold on Cybertron, Astrotrain went with the rest of them to Chaar, where he was seen trying to deliver Energon cubes to the starving army. When he tried to take a cube for himself while the Constructicons were fighting amongst themselves for the energy, they merged into Devastator and kicked him aside. Devastator was then distracted by Menasor, and Astrotrain made another move for the cube, only to be shot by Cyclonus. Such is life. When Cyclonus insulted the Decepticons for their behavior, Astrotrain somewhat notably mentioned that he knew Galvatron and Megatron "were the same guy". Cyclonus later stated that he needed energon as it was needed to revive Galvatron, and Astrotrain gave him the rest of his supplies. He got an inspirational speech in return. Five Faces of Darkness, Part 1

When the Quintessons offered the Decepticons energon, Astrotrain joined his cohorts in the feasting, and when the Quintessons made a proposition, he agreed to go with it and went to battle the Autobots with everyone else. Five Faces of Darkness, Part 3 He later participated in a battle in space under unknown circumstances. The Killing Jar

Astrotrain then helped Galvatron and the Predacons with the plan to destroy Cybertron with a death crystal cannon. Chaos (episode) Later on, when intruders found their way inside Trypticon, Astrotrain responded to the alarm but ended up being possessed by Starscream's ghost because of his useful cargo space. Starscream flew his body most of the way to Unicron's head, then left it when he closed in on Cybertron, leaving Astrotrain to be shot down by the Protectobots. Astrotrain was then captured and interrogated by the Autobots, but was as confused as they were about why he had been flying so close to Cybertron all by himself. He was later released as a way of thanking Scourge for revealing Unicron's plans to them. Ghost in the Machine

Later, Astrotrain stumbled upon Sky Lynx in space and battled him until the two were suddenly interrupted by a laser barrage from the nearby Planet of Junk and retreated. Astrotrain returned to Chaar to report this to Galvatron, who punched him in the face, insulted him and stated that he didn't care. The Big Broadcast of 2006 (episode)

Astrotrain was later seen participating in a Decepticon attack on Japan, trying to ram a bullet train head-on, before being driven off by the Aerialbots. The Burden Hardest to Bear
When the Autobots began construction of the battle fortress Scramble City in the late 1980s, Astrotrain was assigned to carry out surveillance of the project with Reflector. Using Reflector's camera mode to capture images of Scramble City's transformations photographed the incomplete Autobot City, Astrotrain brought the images back to Megatron so he could deduce whether or not it was powerful enough to stand up to their own near-complete battle station, Trypticon. {{storylink|Fight! =====The Battle of the Star Gate=====

In the mid-1990s, Astrotrain ferried the Decepticons through space for their attack on the orbital interstellar teleportation platform known as the Trigger, created as part of a joint effort between the Autobots and the American government. His shuttle mode serving as the perfect disguise to allow the villains to draw in close before striking, he raised brief suspicion by not matching any known Earthly spacecraft, but when Starscream and Thundercracker deployed from within him and flew on ahead, the impossible sight of jets flying in outer space led the Trigger's crew to believe Astrotrain and his passengers were Autobots. This fatal mistake led to the deaths of three of the four-man crew at the Decepticons' hands before the Autobots arrived to rout the villains. Astrotrain transformed for battle without changing size and entered the fray as a gigantic robot, but even his huge size couldn't win the day, and the Decepticons withdrew. First Contact

Several months later, Astrotrain was employed by Starscream to carry the large payload of energon cubes he had gathered through a deal with the Prime Minister of Japan back to Decepticon Headquarters. When the Decepticons came under attack by the Autobots, Astrotrain took flight, but his escape was barricaded by the time-displaced ghost of Starscream from the future (yes, really), Activation who spirited the present-day Starscream and the energon cubes away to the Trigger. Astrotrain nervously reported this baffling turn of events to his leader, then joined with all the other Decepticons and Autobots in attacking the twin Starscreams, who had fused their body with the Trigger. The battle ended when Optimus Prime and Megatron combined their power to destroy Starscream's new body, but the backwash from the explosion was so powerful that Astrotrain and all the other Transformers were sent hurtling down to Earth in uncontrolled re-entry, and were not heard from again for many months. The Battle of the Star Gate
Astrotrain was one of Lord Straxus's warriors on Cybertron, operating out of Darkmount in Polyhex. At Megatron's demand, he called a group of Decepticons back from a planned assassination attempt on Emirate Xaaron and the Autobot leaders, leaving all the Decepticons unaware that it was actually a ploy by the Autobots to wipe them out. Target: 2006
Astrotrain and his fellow Triple Changers were commissioned by Ratbat to investigate the loss of his priceless cargo that had arrived on Earth via a low-cost freighter, but hadn't checked in as scheduled. Upon making contact with the crashed ship, Astrotrain and his companions were infected with Scraplets, and began to slowly waste away. Lucky for them, the Autobot Blaster was also infected, and his friends managed to re-discover the strange and wondrous chemical that acted as a cure. In saving Blaster, the Triple Changers were incidentally saved as well. Astrotrain showed quick thinking when he identified a nearby [[G.B.
The Triple Changers then linked up with Shockwave's Decepticons on Earth, which soon fell under the command of their former superior on Cybertron, Ratbat. Astrotrain joined the Decepticons in an assault on the Autobot crews of the Ark and Steelhaven on Earth's moon. Totaled! Sometime later, he fought against his fellow Decepticons when Ratbat and Scorponok's armies temporarily came to blows. Astrotrain's carcass lay undiscovered at the bottom of the sea for ten years until Megatron managed to find him. His remains were excavated piece by piece by enslaved humans and transported to Megatron's base of operations within the wrecked Ark in northern Canada. Using incomplete schematics and Megatron's memories of Astrotrain's old body, Astrotrain was finally reconstructed. Astrotrain was immediately put in charge of finding the remnants of the rest of the Decepticons who fell at the hands of the Underbase-powered Starscream, plus the unpleasant task of carting them back to their headquarters. This morbid job took its toll on Astrotrain, who yearned for real battle. Hasbro Transformers Collectors' Club issue 14
Bug Bite's plan was cut short when a jammer activated by Elita One disabled the shells, and a fight soon erupted between Megatron's Decepticons, Bug Bite's Decepticons, and the Autobots under Ultra Magnus' command. Games of Deception
After being humiliated in battle with Optimus Prime, Megatron ordered Sixshot to come to Earth several phases before his presence is normally requested. ====Autobot story====
Megatron sent Astrotrain to collect the energy they had drained from the Monogan hydroelectric power station. When Astrotrain was almost at the generator, he had caught up to a squad of Autobots who had come to stop the Decepticons. Astrotrain got the Autobots' attention by blowing his train whistle and approached them in his train form. When he reached the Autobots, he transformed to robot form and announced that all the energy at the power station belonged to the Decepticons. He told the Autobot squad his orders, warned them that he would destroy the Autobots if they got in his way, and threatened to show them the true power of a triple changer. Optimus Prime requested that Astrotrain leave, but the locomotive/space shuttle Transformer brushed this off with a "whatever", and engaged the Autobots. Despite his best efforts, Astrotrain was defeated. Optimus told the triple changer to fly back on his prized wings, back to Megatron. Realizing that he was defeated, Astrotrain decided to retreat, transforming to his space shuttle form and blasted off. He faced off the Autobots once again outside ELTA. Despite having already fought Snapdragon, Apeface, and countless Decepticon foot soldiers in between them all, the Autobots managed to overcome the triple changer once again.

Decepticon story
Astrotrain was a member of a team that Megatron sent to investigate a mysterious UFO that was spotted in the area of Zel Samine. Something caused the team to lose contact with the main Decepticon forces, and they found out that they could not leave the planet, as Zel's sun, Paradius, emitted electromagnetic rays that was harmful to them. Unable to contact Megatron and with no way to leave the planet safely, Astrotrian and the others scattered across Zel.

The Decepticon forces went to Zel in order to investigate, and Astrotrain found the Decepticons while they were at the hydroelectric power station. He called out to them in his train mode and blew his whistle. He rolled up to them and transformed to robot mode once he was close enough, expressing relief for finding them as his energon supplies had been getting low. When Megatron announced that he was sure Astrotrain would be useful, Astrotrain assured him that he was great in fighting, not just for transporting. The Transformers (PS2)

: Classics Astrotrain, like much of the Classics line, is an extensive update of the original Astrotrain designed based heavily upon their cartoon appearances and using modern toy engineering techniques. He still transforms into a NASA space shuttle, though there are two rather obvious locomotive front halves on the sides of the rear hull, and instead of a steam engine, his secondary vehicle mode is a bullet train locomotive. His robot mode is based heavily upon his Generation 1 cartoon animation model design, and is armed with a large purple laser rifle similar to the original toy's rifle.(The side of the rifle has a Mini-Con shaped port on it, if one chooses to do it) However, purple highlights aside, his deco's color scheme is predominantly based on the original Takara toy.

: A design fluke that was acknowledged on Hasbro's official Transformers website allows Astrotrain to connect to Cybertron Ultra Class Jetfire or his redecos, Cybertron Sky Shadow or Movie Jetstorm, via his landing gear. (Coincidentally, Jetfire's alternate mode is based on a Ukrainian Antonov An-225 Mriya, which was used to transport the Buran orbiter, the Soviet counterpart of the NASA Space Shuttle, on its back.)

: As with most Classics toys, he has a heat-sensitive rubsign.
The figure was extensively redecoed into dark grey and purple colour scheme based on the character’s appearance the Generation 1 cartoon. Unlike the Hasbro Classics release, instead of a rubsign, he has two Decepticon sigils tampographed onto his wings. All Henkei toys feature a somewhat randomly vacuum-metallized part somewhere upon them, and Astrotrain is no exception: the trim of his chestplate and engine array are vacuumized purple, with the engines themselves left as unpainted silver chrome.
Notes
* The 1985 catalogs show a prototype Astrotrain toy, whose gray and purple color scheme is the one used in the cartoon. The prototype also has a number of design changes from the retail version: arms that extended on a slide joint, different feet, and a different head sculpt that was the basis for his character model. He was shown with Blitzwing's weapons. Being resin hard copies, these prototypes didn't transform.

* In an early Japanese sales catalog from 1985, the black and white Astrotrain was listed as an Autobot with the ID number 16, with Megatron being #17 (when released, Megatron was #16, while Astrotrain was #48). In fact, the more realistic black and white deco does look more like an Autobot...

* Astrotrain's animation model is rather odd. Despite having the shuttle tailfin rather clearly folded up and slid into place within the torso... it has another mystery tailfin jutting straight out of the back. Huh.

* Speaking of the tailfin, the original box art and instructions depict it as being folded open to make a chestplate shield. The fin gets tucked away early during the transformation to keep it out of the way. However, the original animation model (and thus his other fictional appearances) show it tucked away in robot mode.

* While Astrotrain's original toy had a visor, his Classics toy, and most of his depictions in fiction, give him two eyes instead.

* Astrotrain, along with Cosmos and Omega Supreme, was one of three space-faring characters added to the cartoon in 1985. In addition to the usual voice flanging given to the show's robotic characters, all three had an echoing reverberation applied to their voices, presumably to play up the "outer space" aspect.

*While Astrotrain does not appear in the Stormbringer comic series (due in part to him being on Earth at the time), the trade paperback includes a design sketch for a Triple Changer which appears to be intended as Astrotrain's pre-Earth Cybertronian form.

*In the IDW Generation 1 continuity during Simon Furman and E. J. Su's run, Astrotrain's space shuttle is essentially a far more realistic rendering of a space vehicle, but his third mode has been upgraded to a diesel-electric six-axle locomotive resembling a General Electric U28C model, along with custom features like red and purple headlights and an all-purple paint-job. It also has a Big F**king Gun mounted on the engine cowling. That's badass.

*From All Hail Megatron onward, Astrotrain's design has been reworked to resemble his Classics toy in robot mode, minus some of the train kibble. However, he transforms into a purple D62 steam locomotive once more, like his original toy. There is probably a good reason for that.

*Astrotrain believes that those who worship Transformers are fools. The God Gambit

*Whether or not Astrotrain needed rails to use his train mode varied in the cartoon. In the movie, he used his locomotive form to take a run up for him to take off (in space shuttle mode), but without the aim of rails. However, before that, he has been commanding his train drones and travelling on rails, in "Triple Takeover".
There, the clone encountered the assembled Autobots, grandiosely lauding each of them even as they tried to capture him (though he did forget mighty Bulkhead's name) under the mistaken assumption that he was fortunate enough to be the true Starscream. When Prowl took him down with a sneak attack, he also complimented the underhanded move, further horrifying the magnificent Prowl (who had done some understandable damage to the city while skillfully showing off with his fancy new mods).

The Autobots proceeded to bring the clone to the attention of the grand and glorious Megatron, who had also been presented with the far superior Clone #3370318 by Lockdown, also believing him to be the genuine article. With both clones in the same place at the same time, Starscream's ingenious scheme was revealed: Both clones had bombs in their spark chambers that would have destroyed all of his enemies at once, had that master ninja Prowl not welded his borrowed mods to the pair and launched them high into the sky to avoid destroying Old Detroit when they exploded. Unaware of the existence of the clones and merely seeking to capture Starscream, Prowl and Lockdown tracked down Clone #3370318, believing him to be the genuine article. Both were a little taken aback by how chicken "Starscream" was being, but that didn't stop Prowl from using his fancy new mod to take the fleeing jet out of the air. The clone begged and pleaded with his captors not to be given to Megatron, who had ordered a bounty on Starscream's head. As Prowl explained he intended to hand "Starscream" over to the Cybertron Elite Guard, Lockdown double-crossed his new partner. After tying Prowl up, Lockdown departed with the clone, dragging him along the asphalt behind him as he sped off to met with Megatron and claim the bounty.
Megatron, too, was taken in by the clone, and was about to make an example of him when the Autobots arrived with Clone #2716057, whom they had managed to capture in the meantime, prompting a Mexican standoff. Starscream then revealed (via communicator) that both clones had bombs implanted in their spark chambers and had been used as bait to draw all of his enemies to one spot. Clone #3370318 was quickly defeated in battle by Lockdown and Prowl (wearing a set of power-boosting armor). Badly injured, Lockdown remarked that the only thing keeping him from "wearing out the merchandise" even more was the fact that it would drop in value. Lockdown then hauled the clone off to a warehouse to be sold to Megatron. Clone #3370318 was then joined by Clone #2716057, who had just been brought in by the Autobots. Both clones were rigged to explode by the real Starscream, but were quickly launched into the sky by Prowl, where they detonated harmlessly. The Cool Episode 6
Buzzsaw is an artist—rather, he likes to make art out of his victims. He approaches his victims with reasoned clarity and sophistication, gutting them with what he believes to be inspirational precision. However, his ego is easily wounded, and he's not adept at improvisation. If one of his "masterpieces" is interrupted and he cannot proceed as planned, he would rather retreat to sulk than rethink his approach.
He will kill you. It's not a matter of if, but a matter of where, when, and how painful it is.
noteukonly

Buzzsaw was among Megatron's attack party which ambushed the Autobots aboard the Ark, crashing on Earth 4 million years ago. When the Autobots and Decepticons were revived in 1984, Buzzsaw was given the alternate mode of a gold cassette tape. As Megatron gave a roll call to determine who had survived the crash, Buzzsaw noted that his beak "has carved many an Autobot warrior into a masterpiece of scrap metal." The Transformers (issue)

The Decepticons soon attacked Harrison Nuclear Power Plant to use as material to build a new headquarters, and Buzzsaw was able to fly through its reinforced concrete walls as if they were paper. It was discovered that the human ally of the Autobots, Sparkplug Witwicky, may know of a way to convert Earth fuel into a form Transformers can use, and so Buzzsaw and the Decepticons led an attack on his auto repair shop. Though Prowl scored a direct hit on Buzzsaw, he was able to return with his fellow Decepticons to their base with Sparkplug. Power Play! The human military surrounded the Decepticons' headquarters, and Megatron ordered his warriors to "greet" them. Buzzsaw happily cut through the wings of the fighter jets while disparaging their primitive technology. Prisoner of War!

When Starscream fired upon his teammate Ravage for eavesdropping on his plot to overthrow Megatron, Buzzsaw and the other Decepticons sought deadly revenge on the Decepticon Air Commander. The Enemy Within! Though Starscream escaped, the Decepticons soon regrouped to attack the Ark. Laserbeak was the first casualty of the raid, which Buzzsaw quickly reported back to Megatron, but their battle was ended prematurely when Auntie, the Arks computer system, magnetized the walls, immobilizing both factions. Raiders of the Last Ark Buzzsaw also travelled with the Decepticons to the United Kingdom, where he and his teammates attempted to take control of the Man of Iron's ship. When Jazz fired upon the ship, destroying it, the Decepticons could no longer take the ship and learn from it the location of Cybertron, so they left. Notably, in the battle against the Autobot's ship, Buzzsaw's attacks were visibly of greater power than his comrades... Man of Iron (story)

The Decepticons were successful in learning from Sparkplug Witwicky how to convert Earth fuel for themselves, and they attacked the Ark in force. The Autobots were weakened from their own lingering fuel problems, and Buzzsaw noticed that even Optimus Prime had trouble hitting him with a shot from his rifle. The Decepticons were clearly the imminent victors in this lopsided battle, and as Buzzsaw tore through the head of one of the final remaining Autobots, Mirage, the Decepticons declared victory. ...Or, they would have, if Sparkplug hadn't poisoned their fuel, causing the Decepticons to stumble over themselves in pain. It was only the surprise arrival of Shockwave that saved Buzzsaw and the others from certain defeat. The Last Stand

After Shockwave assumed command and set up shop at Blackrock Aerospace Assembly Plant Number One, Buzzsaw would perch on Shockwave's shoulder and keep his unruly troops in line. DIS-Integrated Circuits! Buzzsaw, though unnamed, later accompanied Soundwave and most of the other cassette-tape Decepticons to aid their impostor Optimus Prime's ambush of the Autobots, though all of them were easily defeated once the real Optimus Prime was restored. Prime Time!

Unlike the Seekers, Soundwave, Buzzsaw, and the other animal cassettes remained more loyal to Megatron than to Shockwave, and so when the former Decepticon leader was discovered in a coal mine, they arrived swiftly to refuel and reclaim him. I, Robot-Master! (Meanwhile, Buzzsaw also supported Shockwave, including his unsuccessful plot to kidnap and brainwash Bumblebee into being a Decepticon. Plight of the Bumblebee!) One of Megatron's first acts upon returning to the Decepticons was to attack the Ark while seemingly all of the Autobots were attacking the Decepticon base, and he took the Seekers and all of the cassette Decepticons (minus Ravage) with him. Unfortunately, the Ark was now defended by the newly-built Omega Supreme. All of the attacking Decepticons except for Laserbeak and Megatron were obliterated. Buzzsaw's destroyed body was kept in storage within the Ark for several years. Command Performances!

Buzzsaw's body and the others destroyed by Omega Supreme were lifted from the Ark by the Constructicons while the rest of the Decepticons (now under leadership of Ratbat) ambushed the Autobots on the Moon. Totaled!

Soon a civil war erupted between Ratbat's Decepticons and Scorponok's Decepticons, during which Buzzsaw brutally (and literally) disarmed Cutthroat. Cold War! However, it was discovered that the civil war was instigated by Starscream to distract from his evil intentions for the Underbase. The Autobots also showed up, as part of Starscream's diversion, and the two Decepticon armies teamed up to destroy them. Just before strafing Swoop, Buzzsaw cannon-blasted Omega Supreme. However, he had little time to celebrate what may be the single most lop-sided takedown in Transformers history, as he was destroyed by the Underbase-powered Starscream soon afterwards. Dark Star
This led to an alliance between the Decepticons and King Nergill to conquer Washington, D.C.. Buzzsaw helped the Sub-Atlanticans capture the Autobot Wheeljack when he was investigating the situation. His luck didn't hold out when the Dinobots came to occupied Washington, though. Swoop outflew Buzzsaw and Laserbeak, shooting them down with air-to-air missiles. Atlantis, Arise!

Soundwave unleashed Buzzsaw and Laserbeak at Jazz and Inferno when the Decepticons teamed up with the Insecticons to take the Nova Power Plant for its energy. Laserbeak was quickly shot down, but Buzzsaw managed to avoid the Autobots' laser fire and flew off. Later, he lost control of his faculties when Bombshell used his cerebro-shells to turn the Decepticons against Megatron, before their fearless leader could turn against them. He was presumably restored with the others when Bombshell's excess power was negated. The Insecticon Syndrome Buzzsaw later trapped the Autobots inside their bunker behind a pile of rubble, allowing Rumble to get close enough to steal the Negavator, but eventually the Autobots got free and the Decepticons were driven away. Auto Berserk
While searching for the Matrix, Soundwave ejected Buzzsaw and Laserbeak to fight Hot Rod. Hot Rod was rescued by Blaster, prompting Blaster and Soundwave to fight to the death. Buzzsaw, Laserbeak, and Ratbat gathered Soundwave's scattered remains and escaped to the Decepticon base on Chaar. The Mystery of Planet Master There, Buzzsaw met with the rest of the Decepticon cassettes, and at Galvatron's instruction, used technology borrowed from Scorponok to rebuild him into Soundblaster. As Soundblaster came to life, Buzzsaw and the others cheered. Likewise, the Autobots rebuilt Blaster into Twincast, who travelled to Chaar to face Soundblaster again. Buzzsaw was involved with Starscream's occupation of the human city, Las Vegas. Presumably, he came in under Soundwave's direction. The Decepticons initially worked closely with the Las Vegas Police Department, with Buzzsaw and Laserbeak serving as "watchbirds" to keep an optic open for any unlawful activity in the city limits. Buzzsaw even served as a passive deterrent when necessary, divebombing a hold-up artist named Bernie Kalus before he could enter the convenience store he had targeted. Hardwired Later on, after the Autobots had invaded Las Vegas, Buzzsaw tried to eliminate Prowl and a wounded Bumblebee, but was chased off the hunt when Optimus Prime got involved in the skirmish. When Megatron and Starscream divvyed up the Decepticon forces, Buzzsaw somehow managed to be on BOTH factions simultaneously. In the final fight with the Keepers in Las Vegas, he joined Thundercracker, Laserbeak and the Autobot flyer named Wheeljack in performing aerial assaults on the alien beings. Annihilation Several days later, Buzzsaw and the Decepticons joined the Autobots again in defending against an ambush by the American military in the Nevada desert. The Army had reverse-engineered some Cybertronian technology to create the deconstructionites, microchip-sized projectile sprays that drained the Transformers of their processing power on contact. Buzzsaw caught heavy flak in the first salvo, and quickly found himself unable to fly. He was dragged to safety by Megatron himself, but was left incapacitated for some time thereafter. Fusion (novel)
: A redeco of the Energon Divebomb mold, Buzzsaw gains a humanoid mode along with his robot-falcon form. He came with a set of clear-indigo energon weapons that could combine to form a large blade, plus an indigo energon star. He was available only in a "souvenir" 2-piece set with Laserbeak, sold at 2006, and limited to 500 pieces.
: In 2009, Buzzsaw was included with yet another reissue of Soundwave as part of the Universe line, this time as a Hasbro Toy Shop exclusive that was prominently offered at San Diego Comic-Con 2009. Included were his weapons and his own cassette case.

Notes
* Though Buzzsaw is portrayed as transforming into a normal audio cassette in the various fictions, his original toy was a microcassette. (Likewise, Soundwave's toy was a microcassette recorder, rather than the "stereo cassette deck" he's stated to be elsewhere.)

*Buzzsaw's scant appearances in the original animated series come as a result of a note in the production bible that says he should only "be used occasionally". This, presumably, is due to the fact that his toy was only available packaged with Soundwave, and hence did not need to be advertised via the show. Poor little guy didn't even get an individual bio in there. (No wonder he took it out on everybody.)

* Buzzsaw could talk in the Marvel UK Comics, as well as in some episodes of the Japanese Headmasters cartoon (where he even commented on how tired he is of seeing Scourge and Cyclonus always lick Galvatron's feet modules). In all media though, he certainly possesses normal transformer intelligence.

*The title screen to Ocean's Transformers game for the Commodore 64 depicts either a Laserbeak or a Buzzsaw that is primarily red with gold wings. Get on it, e-Hobby!

* At BotCon 2006, the signboards advertising the Laserbeak/Buzzsaw set incorrectly identified him as "Buzzclaw". This was the only place the error appeared.

* Buzzsaw is the coolest cassette. Don't even bother arguing.
