Toy packaging blurb
According to the toy packaging Optimus Prime went searching for new energy sources and, within the heart of a black hole discovered Nucleon: a miracle fuel that made Transformers stronger, faster, and more alive, but cost them the ability to transform. Soon the Decepticons stole the technology and created Action Masters of their own.

This story was later referenced with the Japanese release of Nucleon Quest Convoy, a black repaint of Powermaster Optimus Prime who was given the backstory of being Prime specially outfitted for this trip into the black hole.

Marvel Comics continuity
Grimlock heard rumors of a new miracle fuel on the planet Hydrus 4. Against orders he stole the non-functioning bodies of his fellow Dinobots and headed there to find out. What he descovered was a ruined world filled with creepy, obsessive, rotting zombie-like beings warning him that it was all because of Nucleon. Being Grimlock, he then went ahead and used the fuel anyway, first on himself then to revive his fallen teammates.

Grimlock soon found parts of his body inexplicably seizing up, and began to fear that he should have listened to the creepy dieing robots after all. After returning to the Ark Grimlock used the Nucleon to repair all the damaged Autobots in the ship's medical bay (as well as Megatron, whom he didn't know was there). Following the Transformers battle with Unicron Grimlock froze-up entirely. It was then that Hi-Q (in the process of mergeing with Optimus Prime) saw with "Powermaster eyes" that Grimlock wasn't malfunctioning, but changing. He used his Powermaster abillities to speed-up the process and Grimlock burst forth in his new, more-powerful Action Master form.

:(Note: Grimlock is the only actual Action Master to appear in the US comics. Other Action Master toys are represented, but not having been changed by Nucleon they are likely not actual Action Masters. Simon Furman has commented that if the comic book had continued we would have seen other Transformers become Action Masters, and we also would have seen a follow up to the hints that Nucleon effects everyone differently, with some Transformers being affected by it in various alternate ways.)

The Action Master toyline, depicting the obvious oxymoron of "Transformers who don't transform," generated initial ire from some fans. This was magnified as Action Masters were released in the final year of the original Transformers toyline in the US. When Transformers was summarily cancelled in North America, some fans blamed the gimmick for the death of the franchise (despite the wide variety of other factors that doubtlessly were involved).

One aspect Action Masters is notable for, however, is the mass reintroduction of "classic" characters. New toys for old characters was not a theme the original toyline visited very often, and so to have a single subline with so many recurring favorites was, at the time, a novelty. In addition, the classic characters were designed to more closely resemble their cartoon counterparts. For much of the Season 1 and 2 cast, the original figures having been designed years before they were stylized and simplified for the cartoon, these Action Masters were the closest likenesses of their fiction representatons ever.

As with many other changes to the Transformers brand, initial hostility towards Action Masters from the fandom eventually became less intense, and diversified into a broad range of opinion. Many of the most in-demand vintage (and therefore expensive) Transformers toys are Action Masters, and new characters from this subgroup are still harkened back to in newer toylines. For example, Axer shows up in the Robots in Disguise toyline, Armada Overload has design elements based on Rollout, and Cybertron Smokescreen's colors are a partial homage to Rad.

This front page needs to be redesigned to be more useful.

One problem is that it claims to have a list of categories, but it's actually a list of pages that list other pages. "Categories" have a special meaning in MediaWiki related to adding category tags at the bottom of an article. The main page's link to a "complete category list" is the real category list, as understood by the wiki's database. The lists... need to be called something else.

I do think it's useful to have links on the front page linking to lists of toylines, TV shows, comic series/publishers, etc.. It just needs to be presented differently. I don't at the moment have a good idea for how to do it, though.
::Sort of? Timelines is basically a spin of of Universe in... another Universe. It'll probably be easier to keep it its own continuity for clarity's sake. - Vanguard

:::If Timelines is the continuity of the club comic (not actually a given), don't the events of that series, which now have been linked to the events of the Universe comic, put them together? The fact that Prime and Magnus have been explicitly pulled from one group to another shouldn't make too much difference here, since both are explicitly continuity-hopping continuities. (uhh, yeah.)--G.B. Blackrock 18:26, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
::::I've always disagreed with Steve's take on the Continuities page that the fan club comic is a Timelines story. As has been said, Timelines is just a sequence of unrelated story branch-offs, and the fan club comic takes place in the Cybertron cartoon universe. (It's LABELLED a Cybertron story, not Timelines, so that much should be obvious.) Timelines is definitely its own thing. --ItsWalky 02:18, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

:::In any event, if we're talking "for clarity's sake," I find it clearer to have fewer titles to follow, rather than more. Perhaps you see it differently.--G.B. Blackrock 18:27, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

::There also IS a legal issue involved as well, but I'm not sure on the details involved. I suppose it doesn't matter too much, and maybe we should treat Timelines as a sequel to Universe? - Vanguard

Timelines and Universe are unrelated. Universe refers to a very specific cross-multiverse battle between agents of Primus and Unicron in direct confrontation. Timelines is just off-continuity one-shot stories with vague connections (if any) to whatever jumping-off point they feel like. 2006's "Timelines" entry may very well have no relation to 2005's whatsoever, or 2007... as such, they should remain separate. --M Sipher 21:08, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

A possible cause for confusion may be that the fan club comic appears to share continuity with the Universe story. However, the fan club comic is, strangely, not "Transformers Timelines" but is simply called "Transformers Cybertron". So far the only Timelines story is what we got at BotCon 2005. --Steve-o 21:28, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
:I expect that we'll see that "Timelines" is the line they release the next "freebie" under when it finally arrives. Time will tell on that. For the moment, you're quite right. I'm still not sure I agree with M Sipher above, but it seems clear that I'm outvoted. So be it.--G.B. Blackrock 00:26, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

The info that Timelines is intended to be a series of unconnected, standalone tales comes from conversations with Ben Yee and Karl Hartman. They, like Legends, are all basically "what if" stories. --M Sipher 02:03, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

If Timelines is just going to be a bunch of random stories without regard to continuity, then it sounds like it probably wouldn't be too appropriate to have it listed under Continuities on the main page. Since, uh, there isn't any continuity. --Suki Brits 03:12, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
