==Synopsis==

The [[space bridge]] doors open, and [[Spike Witwicky (G1)|Spike]] and [[Carly]] find themselves facing the business end of [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]]'s gun arm! He fires a ray that vaporizes Carly's car right out from under them. Fleeing through [[Decepticon Headquarters (Cybertron)|Decepticon Headquarters]], the two humans manage to take refuge inside a small hole in a computer, a space where Shockwave won't fire after them for fear of damaging the equipment. Carly attempts to work the machine, but is hit by a surge of electricity and falls into a nearby pit, damaging the computer, but also twisting her ankle in the process. [[Megatron (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Megatron]] contacts Shockwave and orders him to send [[Cybertonium]] before the [[Decepticon]]s die, but Carly's tinkering has left the Space Bridge non-functional.

Using Wheeljack's thumb radio, Spike makes contact with [[Sparkplug Witwicky|Sparkplug]], who is pretty much the only person standing at Autobot Headquarters, as the Autobots are all shut down. Sparkplug uses [[Teletraan I (G1)|Teletraan I]] to guide them out of the computer and toward [[Wheeljack's workshop|Wheeljack's old lab]]. Carly gets them through the door, but before they can start looking for Wheeljack's stash of Cybertonium, someone or something starts pounding on the roof. Spike finds a rifle and blasts the intruder, who is revealed to be... [[Swoop (G1)|Swoop]]!

The errant Dinobot explains that the Dinobots were captured by the Decepticons after a fight in Decepticon Headquarters, and taken to the [[Cybertonium Pit]]. The three are guided by Sparkplug to the [[Mass Transit System]]. Unfortunately, the tube carrying their car is damaged, and they can no longer communicate with Sparkplug. Deep underground, the three are nearly killed when they activate old defense systems. Swoop saves the day, but his wings are damaged.

Reaching the surface, they find an abandoned city, which has clearly seen better days. Carly discovers a records room, with a datatrack which explains the history of the [[Great War (G1)|terrible war between the Autobots and Decepticons]]. Swoop says that he never knew the war had gone on for so long, but they are soon captured by a [[Sentinel (G1)|Sentinel]].

Taken to the Cybertonium Pit, they discover that Shockwave altered the [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobots]]' [[memory circuit]]s, making them think they're loyal to the Decepticons. Carly is able to repair their memory circuits, and the Dinobots thank Carly and Spike for rescuing them (except [[Slag (G1)|Slag]], of course). Now that the Dinobots are themselves, Spike comes up with an escape plan. He and [[Grimlock (G1)|Grimlock]] start arguing, so the Sentinel decides to remove the humans. When the force field surrounding them comes down, the Dinobots destroy the drones. The Dinobots take the kids to an access tube, and Grimlock carries them up.

Meanwhile, Sparkplug sends a message to Cybertron, saying that he has managed to direct the space bridge to land outside the [[Ark (G1)|Autobot base]]. Shockwave contacts Megatron, saying that he has sufficient Cybertonium, and the Space Bridge is repaired, but that he has lost control of the destination site. Having overheard this, the Dinobots overwhelm Shockwave, and although Shockwave is able to hit Swoop, the Dinobots and humans manage to escape back to Earth with a shipment of Cybertonium.

At the Autobot base, [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Optimus Prime]] awards Spike and Carly with medals, making them "[[Honorary Autobot]]s". Grimlock decides to follow the Autobot leader's orders, and the Dinobots rejoin the [[Autobot]]s...until Grimlock no longer feels like following Prime's orders.

===Animation and technical errors===
* An establishing shot shows us a pile of nonfunctional Autobots. Among them is Jazz, now back in his complete robot mode after being stuck as a half-car, half-robot last episode. In the same shot, Prowl's head crest is white instead of red, Jazz's tires are white, Bumblebee's groin is gray instead of yellow, and Brawn's gauntlets are yellow instead of gray.

*One of Teletraan I's displays labels Spike and Carly's location as "DECEPTKON COMPUTER BRAIN".

* Where's Spike been carrying that rather largish [[photon light]] he pulls out? It's way too big to fit in a pocket.

* Carly's "oop!" happens before she actually stumbles. She's calmly saying "Let me lean on your shoulder" while nearly pitching face-first into the ground.

*Predictably, the entrance to Wheeljack's lab looks completely different than when we saw it in "Divide and Conquer". So does the access panel for the door. Neither of those looked like the entrance seen in "The Ultimate Doom, Part 3", but that seems to have been a back door.

* As is common in the cartoon universe, the metal ceiling of Wheeljack's lab cracks and crumbles like rock.

* Swoop's wing damage is missing in the very next shot of him after it happens ("Must've triggered switch!").

* After he's shot by the Decepticon guard, Swoop falls over with a very organic-sounding thump.

* The Dinobots are all busily loading, loading, loading while they declare that they don't want to leave the Cybertonium pits. But when Carly decides to check Snarl's circuits, he's just standing there doing nothing.

* Would anybody recognize Slag if they colored his face ''right''?
** The front of Slag's checkguard is white instead of red as Carly fixes him.
** His whole face is white as the energy fence deactivates, and again as he returns to robot mode and escapes from the pit.
** The "side panels" of his head are white as Optimus Prime starts to address the Dinobots (his eyes are also colored red, and next to him, Sludge has empty white voids instead of eyes.)
** White cheekguard-fronts again as Slag speaks his final line. His chest plate is also gray instead of white.

* During the "history of Cybertron" segment, there is a purple [[generic]] with spikes on his shoulders who is among the Decepticons when they round up a group of Autobots who surrender. He is seen again shortly afterwards... among a group of (if the narration is something to go by) ''Autobots'' who show off their newly-acquired transformation abilities.

* After their escape, the Dinobots stop to figure out which way to go; in this shot, Grimlock's head is light gray, and Slag's dino head is light gray instead of yellow.

*During the final scene, Swoop can be seen being repaired (presumably having his blown-up wing replaced, since he only has one), but his intact wing is the same color as the bed he's lying on, and his beak is red. And Ratchet, standing at the foot of the bed, is red and gray.

===Continuity errors===
* Victor Caroli's voiceover recap incorrectly describes the Autobots as "energy depleted"; in actuality, they're suffering mechanical breakdowns.

*At the end of Part 1, Shockwave fires (with two guns!) into the opening Space Bridge elevator door, triggering a huge explosion (which the "in our last episode" recap is kind enough to replay for us at the episode's start.) At the opening of this episode, however, he's just standing there when the elevator doors open, aiming his gun arm; his hand-held pistol is gone. After a second, he fires a ray that vaporizes Carly's car out from under its two human passengers, but doesn't cause any human-eviscerating explosions. It's not the first time that ''The Transformers'' has solved an unsolvable problem by just ignoring it, but it's one of the most flagrant.

*Incidentally, the ability to vaporize an entire automobile's worth of mass would seem to be a pretty useful power for an evil robot, but it's never seen outside of this episode's opening sequence.

*Also incidentally, Shockwave sure does stand there for an awfully long time, letting the clearly-still-alive humans run off into his headquarters.

* Improbable viewpoints:
** Most of the monitor imagery in this episode is simulated pictures constructed by Teletraan-1 to keep Sparkplug abreast of Spike and Carly's progress. All well and good, but it does seem to rule out any possibility that all those other unlikely camera views in all those other episodes were super-realistic computer simulations.
** Is Megatron collapsed against the video monitor console... or do the Decepticons have a camera on the floor?

*Spike and Carly happen upon a stack of energon cubes, and the script makes a point of having Spike wonder aloud where they came from, since Cybertron is supposed to be out of energy. Does nobody remember that whole [[The Ultimate Doom, Part 2|sending energon]] [[Divide and Conquer|to Cybertron]] thing the Decepticons had going on?

* Superhuman Spike:
** Spike manages to hold back an approximately 20+ foot tall metal door weighing several tons from crushing him and Carly.
** He also lifts a metal gun that's bigger than he is!
** Both he and Carly manage to hang on to Swoop's giant metal claws through a gut-wrenching series of aerial maneuvers. They're both fine when he drops them before crashing.

*When Carly and Spike reach Wheeljack's lab, Carly opens the door without ever knowing the pass code. It's not impossible that she got the code from [[Chip Chase]], who systematically guessed the code in "[[Divide and Conquer]]", but it does seem a bit on the unlikely side. Wheeljack also has a Decepticon symbol on his doorway, presumably put there by the Decepticons who sealed the entrance... but it wasn't there either of the last two times we saw the lab.

* It's a cartoon convention that a missile can't harm you unless it physically hits you, no matter how close it gets, so we can cut ''The Transformers'' a little slack in this regard. However, the absurdity of it is a bit flagrant as Swoop dodges missiles in the extremely tight confines of a hallway, where the missiles have several chances to explode basically right next to him.

*Sparkplug says he's altered the space bridge destination by tapping into the Decepticons' computers. He never mentions how he managed to build an entire space bridge receiver ring right outside Autobot Headquarters. There has also been some previous indication that the space bridge appears at random, uncontrolled locations. Perhaps the receiver ring is part of the deal?

===Continuity notes===
* Gadgets and powers:
** As mentioned above, Shockwave can ''vaporize'' things with a ray from his gun arm. What things? Cars, robots, machinery, just about anything, it would seem. How have the Decepticons not won the war with this guy on their side??
** Swoop can launch a couple of stubby little missiles out of his upper chest.
** The Dinobots' memory circuits can be bypassed via something or other in their chests. It sounds bizarre, but Bumblebee apparently had memory chips in his chest in "Transport to Oblivion", and Brainstorm later declares that he and his compatriots all have "auxiliary memory circuits" in their chests.
* Swoop and the humans wander into what appears to be an abandoned underground city on Cybertron. The notion of Cybertron cities being built one atop the next would be revisited in the ''Beast Machines'' cartoon, many years later.
* This episode gives us a rare glimpse into Cybertron's past via a sort of mini-documentary:
** The footage features a ''ton'' of totally made-up robot and vehicle designs.
** The ships used by fleeing Autobots in the datatracks are the [[Vanguard-class Deep Space Interceptor|same type]] as the Ark.
** The documentary suggests that the Autobots created the art of transforming, something that the "[[Five Faces of Darkness, Part 1|Five Faces of Darkness]]" also corroborates.
** This was the first episode where a Transformer that isn't a hologram or a clone is shown to be destroyed.
* For the most part, this is the last time the Dinobots would be shown as rebellious, intimidating warriors in the original animated continuity, as by their next appearance in ''[[The Transformers: The Movie]]'' they are happy to work with other Autobots, and by [[Generation 1 (cartoon)|Season 3]], are generally used as comedic foils.
* Since Cybertron clearly sucked up a bunch of Earth's atmosphere in "[[The Ultimate Doom, Part 1]]", we can forgive Carly and Spike's ability to breathe there. (Of course, Cybertron was human-inhabitable even before that incident, as demonstrated by Chip's visit in "[[Divide and Conquer]]".) Awful handy of it to have human-compatible gravity (which it would need anyway to actually hold on to that atmosphere.)

On [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], the [[Autobot|Autobots]] are hosting a peace conference for two neighboring planets, [[Xetaxxis]] and [[Lanarq]], which have been at war for centuries and will wipe each other out within a generation, as explained by [[Melkorr]]. [[Spike Witwicky (G1)|Spike Witwicky]] asks the leaders of the two delegations to shake hands. They take the opportunity to grapple with each other. [[Hot Rod (G1)|Rodimus Prime]] remarks that it's going well so far.

Elsewhere, [[Predaking]] detects a strange signal of [[Quintesson]] origin. He contacts [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]], who intends to meet him at the coordinates. However, [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]] has also detected the signal, and he sends [[Sky Lynx (G1)|Sky Lynx]], who is carrying [[Blaster (G1)|Blaster]] and [[Outback]], to investigate. The foliage is too thick for Sky Lynx to land, so Blaster and Outback head out on foot. Blaster ejects [[Steeljaw (G1)|Steeljaw]] and [[Ramhorn]] to help in the search. Meanwhile, Predaking separates into the [[Predacon (G1)|Predacons]] to cover more ground. The Autobots are suddenly attacked by vines, but are able to free themselves and find the source of the signal, a strange golden cylinder. Just then, a tree nearly falls on the device, and Outback blasts it, causing the device to activate. The Autobots learn that the cylinder is a [[Quintesson Journal]], a record of their commercial activities on various planets. The Predacons then arrive and attack. Sky Lynx arrives to rescue the Autobots, and the Predacons unite. The Autobots are able to board Sky Lynx and escape, only to be attacked by Cyclonus and the [[Sweep]]s. Suddenly, an energy field grabs Sky Lynx through an unseen [[warp gate]], which closes.

On the other side of the warp gate, a Quintesson ship captures Sky Lynx, disabling his ability to [[Transformation|transform]]. The Quintessons reclaim the journal and take Outback, Blaster, and the cassettes prisoner. Outback is able to trick a [[Sharkticon (G1)|Sharkticon]] into opening the cell for some [[Energon (fuel)|energon]], and Blaster then...uh, blasts the Sharkticon. Outback grabs the journal, and the Autobots escape aboard Sky Lynx, only to discover that [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]], Cyclonus, the Sweeps, and Predaking have located them. The [[Decepticon|Decepticons]] manage to steal the journal and flee. At the peace conference, the two delegations leave, intending to purchase doomsday weapons from their suppliers...the Quintessons.

On an unnamed planet, the Decepticons begin to examine the journal. Upon discovering it is economic in nature, Galvatron is angry—well, angrier than usual. However, the Autobots have tracked the Decepticons down, and they learn that the war between Xettaxis and Lanarq is among the journal's archives. Knowing that this could end the war, the Autobots attempt to steal the journal back, only for the Quintessons to steal it back ''again''. On Cybertron, the delegations begin fighting each other. Rodimus is so frustrated that the [[Prime (rank)|Autobot leader]] fires his weapon and orders the two delegations to sit down. Furious, the Xettaxin and Lanarqen leaders request the Quintessons to bring their [[Omega bomb|omega bombs]]. The Quintessons decide that they will deliver ''both'' bombs once they have been paid. However, the Autobots manage to break into their ship and steal back the journal.

Arriving on Cybertron, Blaster and Outback show the recordings to the delegations, who are horrified to discover that their worlds have suffered to finance the Quintessons. Having been found out, the Quintessons contact the peace conference, announcing that they will deliver the omega bombs—right into Xettaxis and Lanarq. This is a big mistake on the Quintessons' part, for they're passing right by Cybertron at that moment. Rodimus and [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]] jump aboard Sky Lynx and follow the Quintessons, destroying their ship before the bombs can be launched. On Cybertron, a peace is negotiated between Xettaxis and Lanarq. However, Rodimus notes that the only real winners of the conflict were the Quintessons.

A mysterious figure watches on his monitor as Ultra Magnus, the [[Sparkabot]]s and Flywheels roam around the surface of [[Kalis]], frustrated at not having discovered anything further. The figure comments that there is no one at liberty who could tell them, and that just three weeks ago nobody at all knew what was happening—until an explosion!

All look to Springer for direction, but he is overwhelmed.''

:''Suddenly, the base is attacked by robot [[Zombie|zombies]], who surge in and slaughter the technicians. The zombies don't stay down, and the Wreckers are overwhelmed. Springer realises this is his fault, but Sandstorm tells him he's the only one free to get Xaaron to safety. Springer worries he will have to leave the other Wreckers at the mercy of the creatures, but realises it must be done to save Xaaron. He turns to the door where another zombie stands, but can't bring himself to blast his way through, and his gun is knocked from his hand. He just can't blast... Impactor!''

The Wreckers and Xaaron are now held in a cell deep underground. They are startled when Impactor's corpse enters, followed by the Autobot Flame, whom Xaaron thought was dead.

Flame expresses his delight to have captured "the Chairman of the ludicrously pompous [[Council of Autobot Elders]] and his fearless commando unit, the Wreckers." Xaaron demands to be released, but Flame is still angry about what happened at Iacon's [[Academy of Science and Technology]], where Xaaron spoke out against Flame's revised scheme to create a battle station as it was inherently dangerous, relying on flawed technology. Flame was thrown out of the academy, but explains how it didn't stop him:

:''Using funds he had embezzled, Flame reactivated a lab in Kalis and continued experimenting with nuclear fission, but after getting careless, he caused an explosion. Everyone assumed Flame had died, but he had been blown clear and found a tunnel leading down to Megatron's engine room. Since then, he has made everything ready and used the Decepticon computer to reactivate and control the corpses of dead Transformers to form Flame's Legion of the Lost!''

Now everything is ready and Flame has captured Xaaron to brag, but Xaaron is outraged, as the reactor is old and dangerous. However, the captives are bound with inhibitor bonds and Impactor's corpse easily subdues them. Flame leaves the corpse of the Wreckers' leader on guard whilst he goes to take care of other matters.

Flame checks up on the problems on the surface, only to see Ultra Magnus and Sizzle arguing because Magnus has sent Flywheels for reinforcements and Sizzle disagrees with relying on a Decepticon. Flame deduces this squabble will keep them occupied.

In the cell, Springer is near-catatonic, having succumbed to a nervous breakdown upon meeting Impactor. Xaaron tells Springer that only he can help them by using his leaping ability to reach a hatch into the ventilation ducts and get to the surface to find reinforcements. Springer has lost his self-confidence, but Xaaron argues that Springer can do it, telling him that Springer is insulting the memory of Impactor. "Fight on, Springer—fight on! It's what Impactor would have wanted!" cries Xaaron, and the words' effect is not just felt by Springer.

Springer agrees and leaps. For a moment, the corpse of Impactor hesitates, but then the computer signal takes over and he jumps on Springer. Both go through the vent. Xaaron and the other Wreckers decide to break out of the cell before Flame realises what's happened.

In the ventilation duct, Springer tries to get Impactor to remember who he was. He talks of Impactor's courage being an example to him and tells Impactor to fight back, all the while as the corpse tries to attack him. Suddenly, Impactor speaks, wanting to know what he was doing and what he has become. He wanders off as Springer determines to save Cybertron, "and this time...I won't let it down!"

When the Overlord visited the city-state of [[Tarn]], war broke out between it and its neigbor, [[Vos]], forcing the Overlord to retreat back to his own home in [[Iacon (city-state)|Iacon]]. Accompanied by [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Optimus Prime]] and a pre-Decepticon [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]], the Overlord almost made it, but was tracked down and cornered at the bridge to Iacon by Tarn's forces, who had blown it out before they got there. Nightstalker, in a display of extreme loyalty to his charge, detonated a self-destruct mechanism installed in all the Overlord's bodyguards as a last resort, taking out all of Tarn's forces with him.

He shouldn't have bothered; the Overlord died soon afterwards from energon deficiency after Ravage betrayed him and sided with Megatron, refusing to give up his own energy to sustain the old, rusting fool. {{storylink|State Games}}

In a major battle at Pinea Omicron, [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Optimus Prime]] succeeds in defeating Galvatron, but is knocked into [[stasis lock]] himself in the process, leaving both sides leaderless and in grave need of [[Energon (fuel)|energon]]. [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]] assumes the role of acting Autobot commander on [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], while the Decepticons, led by a High Council, regroup on "New Cybertron", a world transformed into a metallic sphere through use of the [[eco-structuring]] process previously employed by the [[Cybertronian (faction)|Cybertronian Empire]].

As the story begins, Ultra Magnus sends a crew under the command of [[Grimlock (G1)|Grimlock]] to search for energon, only for their ship to inadvertently enter the cloaked region of space concealing the Hub, a massive structure of interlinked planets that is home to the menacing, mysterious Liege Maximo. Using this massive resonant web of worlds, the Liege Maximo plans to ascend to the realm of the gods, and with the time of the universal alignment that will allow to accomplish this goal about to begin, the Liege Maximo takes no chances and directs his forces to attack both the Autobots and Decepticons to keep them occupied. To fight back, a cabal of Decepticons led by [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]] secretly restores Megatron to life, and the Decepticon leader is able to safely evacuate New Cybertron and blows the planet up to destroy the Liege Maximo's armies. Ultra Magnus is also able to get his fighting forces off Cybertron, and both sides then counter-attack the Hub.

Grimlock's crew attempts to sabotage the Hub from the ground, but they are systematically killed, leaving only [[Swoop (G1)|Swoop]] alive by the time the united Autobot-Decepticon counter-attack arrives comes and draws the Liege Maximo's attention. As the Liege Maximo focuses his attention on the armada, Megatron performs a solo strike on the monster's exposed flank, dying in the process, but causing it to feel pain for the first time in millennia. Panicked, the Liege Maximo begins the alignment, separating his lifeforce from his corporeal form. His body is destroyed by the armada, and Swoop commits a final act of sabotage, causing the portal created by the Hub to collapse. With nowhere to go, the Liege Maximo's lifeforce dissipates, and he is destroyed.

The resolution of this threat leads to the signing of the [[Pax Cybertronia]] and the end of the [[Great War (G1)|Great War]].

==Relation to other works==
"Alignment" served to answer several of the questions surrounding the mysterious entity, the Liege Maximo, that the ''Generation 2'' comics raised. The story explained, as the comics had hinted, that the Liege Maximo was one of the first Transformers created by Primus, who sought to reconnect with the divine origins of the Transformers by gaining access to the realm of the gods. This was the reason for the eco-structuring that [[Jhiaxus (G2)|Jhiaxus]] and the Cybertronian Empire were subjecting planets throughout the galaxy to during the ''Generation 2'' series—this interconnected series of metallic worlds formed the "Hub", a resonant structure that would allow the Liege Maximo to accomplish his goal.

The story also served to form an explicit link between the (Marvel Comics version of the) Generation 1 time period and the recently-concluded Beast Era. It is noted that while the Decepticons are leaderless on New Cybertron, the [[Decepticon High Council|Decepticon High Council]] were unable to agree upon a course of action to further the Decepticon cause. Specifically, a splinter group referring to itself as the [[Predacon (BW)|Predacons]] advocates "unconditional surrender to the Autobots, a pooling of resources, an extended time of gathering and secret re-building"—this, of course, being the tactic of the [[Tripredacus Council]]. At the conclusion of the story, this is ultimately the voice which wins out. Additionally, energon depletion forms a major part of the story, and to overcome it, the concept of [[Great Upgrade|downsizing]] the Transformers' physical forms is introduced.

Since writing "Alignment", Furman has incorporated some of the story's unique concepts in the official material he has worked on. The Furman-penned ''[[Transformers: The Ultimate Guide]]'' made reference to "Alignment", explicitly noting that it was unofficial, but reiterating the Liege Maximo's status as one of the group fiction now referred to as the [[thirteen original Transformers]].

"Alignment" was also responsible for coining the name "[[Galvatron II]]" to refer to the Galvatron introduced in "[[Rhythms of Darkness!]]", which was later [[Canonizing|officialized]] by [[e-Hobby]] when they used it as the name of their exclusive version of the 2003 Galvatron reissue. Furthermore, the storyline which accompanied the e-Hobby [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Laser Ultra Magnus]] reissue described this Galvatron as possessing a Warworld, apparently taking its cue from the backstory briefly covered in "Alignment".

For the most part, Transformers are observed searching for romantic partners amongst their own kind, but attraction to organic lifeforms and even non-living objects has been documented as well.

Some wonder why a species that likely does not [[Reproduction|reproduce]] sexually would participate in behavior that in other creatures exists as a means to promote sex and thereby new life. While a definitive answer to this has yet to be given, the question as to why Transformers become romantically involved with one another can be approached from a different angle. Transformers are a highly social species. This is shown through their very human-like society, interpersonal interactions, [[Relatives|familial relationships]], and even the fairly common practice of merging [[Combiner|bodies]] and minds. If these are not frowned upon, then why should social connections of the romantic kind be regarded much differently, if at all? Perhaps there is no reason for them to engage in romance, but then there is equally no reason for them not to.

Though rather obscure, there is even an official term for two Transformers in a relation: "[[spark]]mates". The most common observation of Cybertronian romance is between a male and a [[female Transformer]]. Considering the general scarcity of female Transformers, and perhaps the absence of [[Reproduction|sexual reproduction]], this is a rather interesting if odd situation. Second to that are the number of noted relations between a Transformer and an organic, equally so almost solely between a (nominally) male and female. These become more frequent as the gender balance becomes less even, even if that is a direct result of Transformers allegedly being genderless. Third in line come "couples" that consist of a Transformer fawning over a not-living object, often regarding it as of the opposite gender.

Though not unheard of, same gender interests are extremely rare. The Japanese version of ''[[Beast Wars (cartoon)|Beast Wars]]'' had [[Airazor (BW)|Airazor]] as a male, making ''his'' relation with [[Tigatron]] the only known instance of a homosexual Transformer couple.<ref name="Airazorboy">The reason the Japanese ''Beast Wars'' dub had Airazor male was because Takara hoped to increase toy-sales that way. Therefore, the relationship with [[Tigatron]] was initially played off somewhat differently to avoid complaints of homosexuality. Tigatron was presented as a samurai retainer with protective feelings towards his young ward; their closeness addressed in a "brotherly" sort of way. Despite that, there was still enough innuendo left-over for the gender-bending to become noticeable. The end of the matter came with the sequence in "[[Other Visits (Part 1)]]" when Airazor and Tigatron stare into each others' eyes while holding hands and slowly leaning in for a kiss. Since little could be done with that scene, the dub team had Airazor fully "come out" and begin to express his affection for Tigatron just before the two of them were abducted by the Vok. [[Kiss]]ing is a regularly observed sign of affection and in [[The Headmasters (cartoon)|''The Headmasters'' episode]] "[[Return of the Immortal Emperor]]", [[Chromedome (G1)|Chromedome]] was rather thrilled he got to see [[Arcee (G1)|Arcee]] transform. Nevertheless, ''Beast Wars'' was the first to pick up the subject in a more direct manner: in the episode "[[The Agenda (Part 1)]]", [[Rattrap]] offers to take [[Silverbolt (BW)|Silverbolt]] to what sounds like a Cybertronian version of a strip club, and later slyly makes a double entendre regarding Silverbolt's suspected kinky activities with [[Blackarachnia (BW)|Blackarachnia]]. Meanwhile, the Japanese dub has Rattrap, thinking himself about to be stabbed by [[Dinobot (BW)|Dinobot]], ask his attacker to "be gentle, because I've heard the first time can hurt."

References and innuendoes have sporadically been appearing since. ''[[Beast Wars Neo (franchise)|Beast Wars Neo]]'' featured the character [[Archadis]], who makes a sport out of coming up with double entendres. [[Scarlett]] and [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]] had a suggestive conversation about "riding" him in "[[Wolves]]", and in "[[The Art of War issue 3]]", Arcee promised Bumblebee to "rotate his tires" if he could beat her, to which he responded with a most enthusiastic "Wooo-Hooo!". In the Dreamwave issue "[[Infestation]]", [[:Image:Infestation crotchrot.jpg|one remark from Sunstreaker]] might suggest the existence of Transformer S.T.D.'s. While the ability to at least exchange thoughts can explain the interest some Transformers have for beings not belonging to their own kind, that pretty much doesn't go for the interest some of them have for not-living objects. Unless the fact they often treat them as if alive has something to do with it. This is possibly not as odd as it seems: Transformers are, after all, [[Alternate mode|part object themselves]], some even having been upgraded from a mere piece of machinery. In that sense, it is maybe even harder to understand why it doesn't happen more often. Fancy that sleek piece of car? Oh, so it's one of those ''not'' talking back? Following his destruction at the hands of the [[Hydra Cannon]], [[Optimus Prime (Armada)|(Armada) Optimus Prime]] finds himself in [[Maccadam's Old Oil House]], encountering a similarly ghostly [[Optimus Primal]]. Both of their sparks 'split,' resulting in the arrivals of the original [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]], and a future Optimus Primal. <ref>The meeting takes place in ''Armada'''s version of Maccadam's Old Oil house, in the relative ''present'' of the animated series.{{fact|Which series?}}</ref>

All four attempt to discern why they're here, eventually concluding that Armada Optimus Prime is the key, as he was here first. Optimus Primal theorizes that each of their sparks, though separate, have ''affinity'' across time, space and dimensions, drawn into similar events and conflicts with similarly affinitive sparks. (Their deaths at the hands of 3 respective Megatrons.)

Armada Optimus Prime's sacrifice differs from that of the others. While a leader is always prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice if there is no other choice, he must be cautious against the urge to sacrifice himself, especially when his leadership is still needed, especially as redemption for perceived mistakes. While a leader is responsible for his mistakes, he is also responsible for his troops, and cannot recklessly throw his life away, as Armada Optimus Prime attempted to do.

Armada Optimus' crisis of confidence resolved, all four briefly join, feeling the ''Prime Spark'', the part of all of their sparks that resonates as one (the affinity Primal theorized about,) then separate to share a drink together before fading back to their respective dimensions and eras.

On the way out, all four encounter their respective Megatrons, fresh from a similar meeting. They run at one another for a ''hilarious'' comedy moment before fading out.

With renewed vigor, Optimus Prime returns to life, ready to kick Decepticon skidplate!

All four attempt to discern why they're here, eventually concluding that Armada Optimus Prime is the key, as he was here first. Optimus Primal theorizes that each of their sparks, though separate, have ''affinity'' across time, space and dimensions, drawn into similar events and conflicts with similarly affinitive sparks. (Their deaths at the hands of 3 respective Megatrons.)

Armada Optimus Prime's sacrifice differs from that of the others. While a leader is always prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice if there is no other choice, he must be cautious against the urge to sacrifice himself, especially when his leadership is still needed, especially as redemption for perceived mistakes. While a leader is responsible for his mistakes, he is also responsible for his troops, and cannot recklessly throw his life away, as Armada Optimus Prime attempted to do.

Armada Optimus' crisis of confidence resolved, all four briefly join, feeling the ''Prime Spark'', the part of all of their sparks that resonates as one (the affinity Primal theorized about,) then separate to share a drink together before fading back to their respective dimensions and eras.

On the way out, all four encounter their respective Megatrons, fresh from a similar meeting. They run at one another for a ''hilarious'' comedy moment before fading out.

With renewed vigor, Optimus Prime returns to life, ready to kick Decepticon skidplate!

When his friend Grimlock had a large spike in his toe, he went on a rampage, which he tried to prevent, but to no avail. Despite this, they still worked for her later, as they helped both Optimus and Grimlock by defeating [[Fusion creature|Meltdown's mutants]] once again. Swoop later found the female spider, who asked him to deliver the fugitive [[Wasp]] for her. Later still, a huge row between him and Grimlock over a TV program saw Swoop booted out of the Dinobots. However, soon the Autobots needed aerial assistance to stop a rogue stealth bomber, and Bumblebee convinced Swoop to help by <strike>reminding him that he owed them for the Rage virus thing</strike> appealing to his <strike>sense of team spirit</strike> ego. He successfully stopped the bomber, saving Detroit and proving to the Autobots that he was awesome.

His relatively simple transformation results in a startlingly [[Show-accuracy|show-accurate]] robot mode (albeit with longer legs in pteranodon mode). He comes with a flail weapon which can be stored under his foot in beast mode. The weapon seems to have an abandoned gimmick where pushing in the bottom of the ball would activate pop-out flames. Apparently, it was abandoned after the realization that if a child swallowed the weapon, the flames popping out would make the kid's esophagus worse for wear. However, this gimmick can somewhat be reactivated with a small modification [http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/radicons-customs/208812-tutorial-animated-swoops-flaming-mace.html], allowing the flames to be ''partially'' revealed. * I would suggest that the show implies the non-Cybertron type Cyber Keys to be powered by their [[:Category:MacGuffins|MacGuffin]] progenitors, the Cyber Planet Keys. Furthermore, the likely explanation for locals having knowledge of keys and keys of their own is that they have remained in contact with the artifacts that spawn them. It could be that Vector Prime's use of his Universal-type Cyber Key triggered a reaction from Earth's Planet Key and the other key slots, activating them all. And Hot Shot's original key could well have been granted from Velocitron's Cyber Planet Key because, having spent so much time in an increasingly racing-oriented culture, the Key may have become attuned to racing-related thoughts. After all, the Cyber Planet Key on Jungle Planet reacted to Overhaul's emotions at a later point, reformatting him into Leobreaker. The initial activation of many keys has been shown to be caused by extreme emotion, and as their summoning is mentally triggered (although the focus for this mental trigger is obviously aided by actually ''saying'' "Cyber Key Power"), this makes sense. (I base this argument on the fact that Transformers do not always have to utter the phrase to summon their Cyber Key. In ''Galaxy Force'' they always say "Force Chip, ignition!" as a verbal trigger, but ''Cybertron'' had to fill the stock footage somehow.) The diplomat, seeing the scale of the war and its participants, decided that some conflicts were best left untouched and that everything would work out in the end. {{storylink|Armada Preview}} Meanwhile, the [[Exodus (Armada)|Mini-Con escape ship]] crash landed on a distant world known as [[Earth]], dispersing the occupants all over the planet. A member of the indigenous [[human]] species, [[Rad White]], stumbled upon the crash site and inadvertently activated the Mini-Con homing device, where it was detected by both Autobot and Decepticon forces. The Autobots led by Optimus Prime used the [[space bridge]] to travel to Earth, unfortunately appearing right in front of a group of human children on a field trip to the [[Allspark Power Generation Station]]. Optimus Prime quickly decided that stealth was of the utmost importance and that they should minimize contact with the local inhabitants, a policy that was questioned by [[Smokescreen (Armada)|Smokescreen]] and [[Scavenger (Armada)|Scavenger]], who just wished to tear through the planet to find the Mini-Cons, as their own troubles were of greater concern. This brought on them an angry rebuke from Optimus who declared that they weren't about to endanger Earth or its inhabitants to serve Autobot interests, but he also understood their frustration, telling them to save their anger for the Decepticons. Meanwhile, the Decepticons had also arrived on Earth and were giving chase to Rad, [[Alexis]], [[Carlos Lopez|Carlos]] and their Mini-Con friends, [[Sparkplug (Armada)|Sparkplug]] and the [[Street Action Mini-Con Team|Street Action Team]]. As [[Starscream (Armada)|Starscream]] and [[Cyclonus (Armada)|Cyclonus]] caught up to the fugitives, Optimus Prime and Scavenger appeared and knocking them out of the sky. {{storylink|Dreamwave Armada issue 4}}

When Megatron arrived on the scene, Optimus Prime bided his time while Smokescreen got into position and distracted his enemy by trash talking, mocking that for all of Megatron's Mini-Con-enhanced power, he had continually failed to defeat the Autobots. Alexis thought that he was a "big red blabbermouth" while Carlos opined that it was like watching a wrestling match due to all the talking they were doing before fighting. Suddenly, Smokescreen pulverised the cliff Megatron was perched upon, burying the Decepticon leader in rubble. At first, Prime was able to beat on Megatron, but the Decepticon's Mini-Con advantage proved too much, and Megatron [[Powerlinx]]ed with all of his Mini-Cons, intending to obliterate all of Prime's circuits for his disrespect. Fortunately, [[Jolt (Armada)|Jolt]]'s team of Mini-Cons arrived, saving Rad and the others, then Powerlinking with the Autobots to force the Decepticons into retreat. The Mini-Cons requested an alliance with the Autobots, on the condition that they were equals in partnership. Optimus Prime agreed, stating the Autobots desperately needed the Mini-Cons' powers, but it was ultimately the choice of the diminutive robots to make. With the alliance formed, Optimus Prime ordered the Autobots to find suitable Earth vehicle modes and the construction of a local headquarters, for he had a feeling they were going to stay on this alien world for a long time. {{storylink|Dreamwave Armada issue 5}}

Later, Optimus Prime sought out the kids at the [[Black Hills]] to tell them goodbye, as he felt they had been dragged into their war too deeply already. He wanted Sparkplug's support in the decision, but before the Mini-Con could fully voice his opinion, he received an emergency transmission from [[Sonar (Armada)|Sonar]] of the [[Air Defense Mini-Con Team (Armada)|Air Defense Mini-Con Team]], who were under attack by the Decepticons in [[Rapid City]], [[South Dakota]]. Sparkplug proposed a covert rescue operation, but Optimus Prime flatly refused, fearing the Autobot Mini-Cons could be captured by the Decepticons. Fed up with Prime telling them what they could and couldn't do, the Mini-Cons and the kids went on their own. {{storylink|Dreamwave Armada issue 6}} Meanwhile, Megatron had modified and forced the Air Defense Team to powerlink together to form the mighty [[Star Saber (Armada)|Star Saber]], and used it to attack the [[Autobase (Armada)|Autobase]] in [[Nebraska|Lincoln]]. During the ensuing battle, Optimus Prime implored for the Air Defense Team to resist Megatron's manipulations and free themselves, as the power came from the three of them, not the one weapon, a concept that Megatron found unfathomable, as all he cared about was controlling the power. Sparkplug and the others returned to make amends, powerlinking with the Autobots to give them the edge they needed. Now on equal footing, Optimus fought back, telling Megatron and the Air Defense Team that it was about ''respect'': respect for the power and for the individual. The Air Defense Team broke free of their bonds and attacked the Decepticon leader. After the Decepticons retreated, so too did the [[Land Military Mini-Con Team|Land Military Team]] and the Air Defense Team. Prime felt that because there was now a balance to the war, the non-aligned Mini-Cons were right to leave and not tip the balance for either side. {{storylink|Dreamwave Armada issue 7}}

Soon afterwards, a monolith crashed in Tranquility, [[Kansas]] and sent out a signal which summoned all Mini-Cons on Earth to converge at the monolith's location. [[Red Alert (Armada)|Red Alert]] was not especially concerned considering the Autobot Mini-Cons could come and go as they pleased and that they might have just needed some time to cool off, but Optimus Prime was worried: after the situation with the Air Defense Team, he was unsure of what they might do next. While the Mini-Cons were in their trance-like state, the Decepticons arrived, intent on claiming all of Earth's Mini-Cons for themselves. Rad used Sparkplug's communications systems to call Optimus Prime for help, which soon arrived. Unfortunately, while the Autobots and Decepticons fought amongst themselves, the Mini-Cons (and Rad) entered the monolith and blasted off into space. {{storylink|Dreamwave Armada issue 8}} As the Autobots left for home, Optimus Prime explained to the kids the significance of the giant Mini-Con symbol that had been burned into the ground and that Rad had been taken to the [[Moon (moon)|Moon]]. He also told them the story about how the Mini-Cons had escaped Cybertron and eventually crashed their ship on the Moon, breaking it in half and sending the bow to Earth. Optimus' only plan was to wait for Megatron to make his move, and try to stop them, for they had no options for reaching the Moon that would not require specialised equipment or actions that would compromise their security on Cybertron. However, an opportunity provided itself when the majority of the Decepticon left for the Moon {{storylink|Dreamwave Armada issue 9}}, allowing Hot Shot and Red Alert to erase any Decepticon sensor logs while Optimus Prime used the space bridge to travel to the Autobase on Cybertron. Unfortunately, [[Jetfire (Armada)|Jetfire]] had his hands full and resented Optimus Prime not leading the Autobots on Cybertron. However, Optimus did manage to get his hands on an [[Autobot shuttle|Autobot Transport Gunship]] {{storylink|Dreamwave Armada issue 10}}, which he used to travel to the Moon. Unbeknownst to Optimus, however, the selfish and cruel [[Destruction Mini-Con Team|Destruction Team]] leader [[Dualor]] had strapped Rad into one of the space mines protecting to Moon, and now Optimus was preparing to destroy the minefield, but he hesitated. While Sparkplug's Mini-Con friends and the [[Space Mini-Con Team|Space Team]] were working on rescuing Rad, Optimus Prime realised an itchy trigger finger would be disastrous. Optimus correctly deduced that [[Sky Blast]] meant no harm and allowed him to dock with the gunship whilst towing the dummy mine containing Rad. After blasting Cyclonus into pieces for attacking their ship, Optimus thanked Sky Blast for his help, and gave those back on the [[Mini-Con Fortress Base]] transportation to Earth promising them that he and his compatriots were in for a lot of changes in how the Autobots treated them. {{storylink|Dreamwave Armada issue 11}}

Prime's word was soon tested when two crises occurred at the same time: Scavenger and Smokescreen had detected the Decepticons building some sort of rocket launch facility in Death Valley, [[California]], and a Mini-Con escape pod from the Moon had been detected in northern [[Alaska]]. At first, the Autobot leader preferred to deal with the Decepticon situation, until Sparkplug convinced him that if he didn't assist the Mini-Cons, the ones in the Autobase would be walking out. With political concerns in mind, Optimus Prime offered the full resources of the Autobots in mounting a rescue mission, which seemed to satisfy the fractious Mini-Cons. {{storylink|Fire & Ice}} Unfortunately, additional problems presented themselves when [[Cyclonus (Armada)|Cyclonus]], overjuiced on the full power of the Destruction Team, began attacking any and all targets while Megatron was blasting them with his [[Solar scalpel]], a superweapon deployed from the rocket in Death Valley. With little choice, Optimus asked Sparkplug to powerlink with him at maximum power, enabling the Autobot to defeat Cyclonus. With the crisis averted and the Mini-Cons rescued, a disappointed Optimus asked Sparkplug why he had been holding back on him, as he thought they trusted one another. As Sparkplug told him the legend of the Mini-Cons having the power to save the universe or destroy it, Optimus was suddenly taken to Cybertron, where he witnessed its destruction...{{storylink|Dreamwave Armada issue 13}}

While the Autobots tried to figure out what had happened to him, Optimus wandered across the blasted ruins of Cybertron, he discovered [[Spinister (G1)|a lone survivor]], who had been reduced to a gibbering wreck. {{Storylink|Worlds Collide, Part 1 of 4}} Optimus Prime refused to believe the confused, fragmented story the survivor told: Prince of Nothingness came, the heavens opened up, and their final judgment was pronounced. All those who fought perished and everything was destroyed. {{Storylink|Worlds Collide, Part 2 of 4}} As [[Unicron]], the devourer of worlds closed in on Cybertron, Optimus begged the survivor to tell him of any way to fight back against the monster. {{Storylink|Worlds Collide, Part 3 of 4}} Sadly, the survivor was beyond help, allowing himself to be sucked into the oblivion of Unicron's maw, despite Optimus' pleas for him to resist. Unicron noticed the lone Cybertronian and took the form of the survivor, proclaiming that like this reality's [[Optimus Prime (Worlds Collide)|Optimus Prime]], the Autobot would fall and his universe would be consumed - the gateway was being prepared by his heralds. Suddenly, Jetfire appeared, having jumped through a space bridge portal after destroying the Decepticon space bridge nexus that Unicron's heralds were using to open up space for their master to enter that reality. As this fallen Cybertron crumbled, Sparkplug, [[Comettor]] and the mysterious Mini-Con [[Over-Run (Armada)|Over-Run]] appeared, having crossed realities to find the Autobot leader. Over-Run handed Optimus the [[Mini-Con Matrix]], the essence of this doomed Cybertron's Mini-Cons, giving the two Autobots the power to transform and combine into Jet Optimus. With the fate of their universe at stake, Optimus called on the Mini-Cons scattered on Earth to join the Autobots and Decepticons in fighting Unicron. Ten years after the defeat of Unicron, Over-Run showed Prime how to commune with Cybertron itself. Doing so reformatted the Autobot leader into a body capable of [[Powerlinx|Powerlinking]] with a team of 'drone' vehicles, and granted him (and the other Autobots) the ability to combine with each other.

Upon returning to Earth, he decided that the Autobots would no longer hide from the inhabitants, but work with them openly. This decision led, among other things, to the Autobots' induction into the UN.

When last seen ''(before the bankruptcy of [[Dreamwave Productions]])'', he was attempting to escape from within the remains of [[Unicron]], after Megatron's trapped spark used him to regain his freedom.

So frequent were their clashes, and so familiar were they to each other, the pair eventually became friends, and Scavenger signed up with the Autobots. Seeing great potential in the young Autobot leader, Scavenger taught Optimus Prime how to fight in hand-to-hand combat. Later, veteran Autobot [[Landmine (Energon)|Landmine]] trained Optimus in [[metallikato]] shortly before leaving [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] with [[Rodimus (Energon)|Rodimus]]. Many years later, it was a more mature Optimus Prime that led a small Autobot unit to [[Earth]] after the activation of the [[Mini-Con]] homing beacon. After warping to Earth, Optimus saved [[Rad White|three]] [[Carlos Lopez|human]] [[Alexis|children]] from the [[Decepticon]] leader, [[Megatron (Armada)|Megatron]], who arrived on the alien world first.

Clashing with his arch enemy, Optimus Prime bought the children and their Mini-Con [[High Wire (Armada)|High Wire]] time to escape while around them, other Transformers warped into the battlefield. Later, after the Decepticons had reformatted themselves into suitable new vehicle modes, Optimus Prime saved the children again, joined by his two subordinates [[Red Alert (Armada)|Red Alert]] and [[Hot Shot (Armada)|Hot Shot]]. {{storylink|First Encounter}}

Befriending these children, he introduced his crew of Autobots to them. The children aided Prime as he led his crew around the world, searching for the long-lost Mini-Con Transformers, before the Decepticon forces could take them and use them for their own evil deeds.

Soon afterward, both the Autobots and Decepticons detected a Mini-Con signal located in the [[Grand Canyon]]. With the help of the kids, Optimus Prime managed to pinpoint the location of the Mini-Con panel before he was confronted by [[Megatron (Armada)|Megatron]], powerlinked to [[Leader-1 (Armada)|Leader-1]]. Outgunned, Optimus Prime was saved when Starscream arrogantly underestimated the [[Street Action Mini-Con Team|Street Action Team's]] combined form of [[Perceptor (Armada)|Perceptor]]. This distraction gave Optimus the opportunity to activate the Mini-Con panel, revealing that its occupant was [[Sparkplug (Armada)|Sparkplug]], Optimus Prime's old Mini-Con partner and friend. Together they Powerlinked, activating Optimus' powerful Maximum Blast which sendt the Decepticons into retreat. {{storylink|Comrade}}

After Unicron's apparent defeat, both Optimus Prime and Galvatron succumbed to their base natures and had one last battle within the Chaos Bringer. Fighting each other to a standstill, both were surprised when Unicron suddenly came back to life, feeding off their hate for each other. Galvatron was drawn toward Unicron's maw, with Prime holding onto his tank treads, telling him to hold on. His nemesis then made the decision to sacrifice his life, giving Prime a final victory, so that Unicron might be destroyed and their race would survive.

8,000 eons ago, Optimus Prime stayed on Cybertron to continue its defense, even as Rodimus led a group of Transformers away from the planet, into space, in search of a new home. {{storylink|The Legend of Rodimus}}

A few years after the defeat of Unicron, Optimus Prime returned from exile to a newly-unified Cybertron where Autobots and Decepticons lived side-by-side in peace. Reassuming leadership of the Autobots, Optimus Prime established a dialogue with the Earth governments with the help of his human friends. Earth sent a delegation to Cybertron, consisting of the three kids and [[Dr. Brian Jones]], the foremost expert in the newly discovered ore [[Energon (Energon)|energon]] that both worlds coveted.

Jones brought along his young son, [[Kicker Jones|Chad]] (also known as 'Kicker'), who was frightened by the tall, menacing robots. When the boy ran away to a ruined and abandoned part of Cybertron, Optimus Prime gave chase, warning Kicker that the area was strictly off limits. The boy accidentally fell and found his way into a massive darkened chamber where an energy being known as [[Primus]] saved him. Optimus Prime found his way into the chamber just as Primus evolved the human child. Sometime after this, Primus (now known as the creator-god of the Transformers), gave Optimus the [[Spark of Combination]], allowing Optimus to grant combining powers to other Autobots. Prime could also now combine with a squad of four drone vehicles, which rode around with him in his trailer when not in use.

Almost a decade later, the energon mining facilities in Sol's asteroid belt, as well as their base on [[Mars (planet)|Mars]], were attacked by a mysterious force of beast-like Transformers. Primus warned Optimus that the enemy was after the energon, causing Optimus to assemble a unit so he could personally assess the situation. Finding no life on Mars, his unit then moved to Earth, where he saved Kicker and Ocean City from an attack by the same creatures. {{storylink|Cybertron City (episode)|Cybertron City}}

Prime agreed to the evacuation of Ocean City, then led a counterattack against the Terrorcons at [[Lunar City]]. He assigned the headstrong Kicker to be partners with the rookie Ironhide, suspecting that the experience would be difficult but beneficial for both of them. {{storylink|Energon Stars}} Prime prepared his troops to defend Earth's Cybertron Cities from further attack. {{storylink|Scorpinok}} Eventually the Terrorcons' attacks forced him to make a difficult call, abandoning the survivors at [[Mars City]] in favor of remaining to defend Ocean City. In the battle that followed, the sight of Megatron's sword caused Prime to wonder if his old nemesis might still be alive. At the same time, the Decepticon troops under his command began abandoning the cause one by one. {{storylink|Megatron's Sword}}

Optimus continued to lead his team against Terrorcon attacks, but soon found himself face-to-face with his oldest and greatest foe. {{storylink|Megatron Resurrected}} In a subsequent battle at Ocean City, the two threw down with all their power. Armed with a copy of Megatron's sword, Optimus was able to defeat him and force the Decepticons to retreat. {{storylink|Megatron Raid}}

Optimus soon found himself stalked by the ghostly Starscream, who secretly followed him around Ocean City, hoping for a chance to assassinate him. Prime lured Starscream to the Moon, where they could battle without interference or collateral damage. Starscream revealed his plans to revive Unicron, causing Prime no small measure of consternation. Though the teleporting Starscream maintained the advantage, Optimus was able to generate "[[Energon Blaster|Hot Shot's blaster]]" during a subsequent Decepticon attack, using it to drive off the attackers. {{storylink|Starscream the Mysterious Mercenary}}

Prime then led a team into the asteroid belt, where they destroyed an asteroid that looked nothing like Unicron, because it looked like Unicron. {{storylink|Battle of the Asteroid Belt}}

Prime continued to lead Earth's defense until Dr. Jones's [[Energon Tower]] could be completed, ensuring the planet's safety. {{storylink|Energon Tower (episode)|Energon Tower}} This role forced him into a difficult decision, detonating the energon stores of [[Jungle City]] in the midst of an overwhelming attack. Although the explosion repulsed the attacking Decepticons, it also obliterated some of Earth's most ancient ruins and an entire Cybertron city. {{storylink|Crisis in Jungle City}}

Prime next clashed with Megatron at [[Lunar City]], but once again a newly-arrived Energon Tower cut the battle short.
{{storylink|Kicker Beware!}} He then led a space-based defense against several giant "comets" that Megatron had created to destroy Earth, which was ultimately saved by the final completion of the energon grid. {{storylink|Energon Grid}}

With Earth secure, Optimus decided to lead his team into space, to pursue and destroy Unicron before Megatron could revive the planet-eater. {{storylink|Rodimus: Friend or Foe?}} As the Autobots prepared to leave Earth's [[solar system]] aboard the ''[[Miranda II]]'', the Decepticons attacked once more; struggling with Megatron, Optimus narrowly avoided getting caught by the ship's energon grid. Demolishor wasn't so lucky. {{storylink|Go for Unicron!}}

Optimus had his team follow Kicker's energon-finding instincts, leading them to a misadventure on a frozen planet. {{storylink|The Return of Demolishor}} Soon after, Optimus was confronted by Rodimus—who shocked him with the proposal that Unicron must not be destroyed, but rather restored! Optimus wasn't convinced, and Rodimus went his own way. {{storylink|A Tale of Two Heros}} Optimus soon was forced to carry out his plan to lure Unicron into the space bridge and to Cybertron, where Rad assaulted Unicron with the planet's energon grid, massively damaging him. {{storylink|Battle Stations}}

With Unicron repulsed, Optimus led a team to Cybertron's surface, where the Decepticons were in rebellion. {{storylink|Alpha Q: Identity}} They soon learned that the Decepticon criminal [[Shockblast (Energon)|Shockblast]] had escaped, and pursued him to the very chamber of Primus. Shockblast escaped, however, and Optimus soon had other concerns: Kicker was returning to Cybertron, with the head of Unicron! {{storylink|Shockblast: Rampage}}

At Kicker's insistence, Optimus met with the alien Alpha Q and heard his story. Moved, he agreed to help Alpha Q revive his planets, but the defense of Cybertron remained his top priority. When Unicron began lashing out at his captors, it was Optimus who recognized the actions as blind survival instinct. {{storylink|Survival Instincts}}

Prime returned to Cybertron's surface to lead the planet's defense as Megatron attacked again. Primus' plan to trap Unicron inside an energon sun failed, and this star collapsed into a [[Unicron Singularity|massive black hole]]. Optimus Prime faced the greatest test in his existence when his home planet was threatened with destruction, but realised there was no choice but to evacuate the population to Earth. Arriving on Earth, Optimus Prime was forced to break his own strict orders to hide from the human population when he rescued the injured [[Landmine (Energon)|Landmine]] and three human children from [[Thundercracker (Armada)|Thundercracker]]. Soon afterward, the children's hometown of Boulder, Colorado was threatened. The newest tunnels in a recently-dug gold mine had destabilized a mountain, making its collapse imminent. This alone would only have damaged the mountain's immediate area, but matters were complicated when Autobot scans revealed the presence of an underground reservoir that would be forced out by the collapse, causing flooding. Coby had the idea of using Optimus Prime's pumping equipment to drain the reservoir, allowing [[Scattorshot (Cybertron)|Scattorshot]] to shatter the mountain with his largest missiles and collapse it safely, averting disaster. {{storylink|Collapse}}

Optimus Prime was dueling with Megatron atop a very high building just before Megatron received the Mini-Con beacon. Following his nemesis to prevent him from using the Mini-Cons for evil, Prime arrived on a new planet: Earth.

Arriving in the Amazon, he familiarized himself with the territory before going and recovering the first Mini-Con Panel. (Which Mini-Con it is varies with the game difficulty, with [[Lock-On]] being released on the first two difficulty levels). He then traversed a [[Scale|disproportionate]] bridge, had a brawl inside a temple, and scaled a pathway up a cliff face before arriving at a run-down temple and encountering Cyclonus. Cyclonus (sporting a fanciful, comic British accent) ordered a [[Heavy Unit]] to attack him, declaring Earth as "Decepticon property". Prime took care of the Heavy Unit, and Hot Shot and Red Alert joined him. Soon they discovered their old Mini-Con partners. (Sparkplug remains with Optimus for the remainder of the game, activating a rather pointless "Powerlinx" Max Payne-esque bullet time mode which drains Prime's health.)
