Transformers Animated is the next television-supported Transformers franchise, due to start in the January of 2008 with a 3-episode mini-movie and continue on to a full 13 episode season.

The cartoon is produced by Cartoon Network, scripted in the United States, with character and background designs by the crews behind shows like Teen Titans and Ben10, while animation is being provided by Japanese studio Mook.

Animated is notable for the fact it sees several G1 voice actors reprise their old roles (Susan Blu, Corey Burton, John Moschitta, etc.) and for the fact this is the first show featuring David Kaye where he won't be voicing Megatron (They made it up to him by having him voice almost everyone else).

Series details
The series will eschew the ever-continuing space opera storylines of the past few anime to return to the episodic approach of Beast Wars; each episode will be a stand alone story but with an overall story arc that stretches through the whole season. The focus is being put firmly on characterization, dynamic action, and humor.

The episodes will center not only on the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons, but also on the Autobots' interactions with many of Detroit's human supervillain denizens, including a maladjusted marksman, a guy who can spit acid, and a guy who looks good in a pimp suit. The idea is to present the Decepticons as credible threats rather than have them all be defeated in every episode. The human villains will give the Autobots "everyday" threats--and no doubt their schemes will turn out to be the result of Decepticon treachery. Note that human adversaries are not new in Transformers continuity.

Season 2 is already in the works and seasons 3 and 4 are quite possible.
Toyline
First previewed July 1, 2007, in Hasbro's Future Products panel at Botcon.

The Transformers: Animated toy line merges the more fluid, expressive design style of the cartoon with extremely poseable robot forms (to a degree even Hasbro seemed pleasantly surprised by). Unlike the franchises immediately before it, there is no overarcing, line-wide gimmick such as Mini-Cons or Cyber Planet Keys; rather, transforming IS the gimmick, and toys will have other special features that are unique and appropriate to the character they depict. While the designs originated with Hasbro and the Cartoon Network team, TakaraTomy is once again stepping up to the plate to engineer the toys.

The toy line is currently scheduled to debut in March 2008 with a special "battle pack" featuring multiple figures. The full line will presumably bow sometime a few months later.

The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 1 is the first part of the two-part season finale of Season 3 of the Generation 1 animated series.

Detailed synopsis
While on a deep-space mission to test a new heat- and radiation-resistant alloy that they have developed, scientists Jessica Morgan and Greggory Swafford detect a ship carrying Optimus Prime's body (see Dark Awakening) on a collision course with a planetoid orbitting a star they are researching nearby. Despite Greggory's reservations (his face was scarred in a previous scuffle between Optimus and Megatron, which he blames on Optimus), he is talked into helping Jessica rescue Prime's body before the ship collides with the planetoid, the impact of which also sets off the star into a supernova and coating their ship with unusual spores. Upon return to Earth, Jessica's father studies the spores and learns that they are not only alive, but are an incredibly contagious viral agent that induces hatred and destructive urges into whoever they contaminate. After a new scuffle between the Technobots and Terrorcons over the new alloy gravely injures Jessica, her father is convinced by Greggory to try and resurrect Prime's body as a carrier of the spores against the Autobots, a sentiment exacerbated when it's learned Jessica was paralyzed from the waist down in the accident and now needs a special exosuit to walk. However, when reviving Prime's body turns out to be impossible for them, Greggory and Jessica's father decide to use it as bait for the other Autobots, forcing Jessica into luring them into a spore trap at the lab.

The trap goes off without a hitch, mostly due to Rodimus' reckless haste in recovering his predecessor's corpse in lieu of caution, and several Autobots - including Superion and Defensor, two of the most powerful Autobot gestalts - are infected. However, the Decepticons had learned about Optimus Prime's recovery as well, and have shown up to terminate the once Autobot leader permanently, but are instead infected themselves. Fortunately, Rodimus, Jessica, and Galvatron manage to escape unharmed, the former two with Optimus' body; a few other Autobots manage to escape infection as well, but are badly wounded while attempting to subdue a sickened and crazed Superion. Back at Autobot City, Rodimus pleads to Wreck-Gar to try and repair Prime, but Prime is too far gone even for Junkion medical experience. Desperate, Rodimus contacts Sky Lynx and orders him to locate and bring back a Quintesson, remembering that they had once before restored Optimus to life, before disconnecting Metroplex, keeping the city-former from becoming infected. However, just as he finishes the final steps to do so, an infected Ultra Magnus appears and has a short chase with Rodimus before being temporarily subdued by Wreck-Gar...who ends up becoming infected, and infecting Rodimus in return, for his efforts.

Now, with the Hate Plague, as it's now called, rampaging even to the ends of the galaxy, Sky Lynx finds an uninfected Quintesson who he's able to convince to help revive Optimus, even though he warns that - should anything go too awry during the process - there's a good chance that Optimus will never live again. It's touch-and-go for a while, but eventually, the Quintesson manages to pull through and Optimus is restored to full life, declaring that "no force in the Universe will be able to stop him".

Megatron creates a clone of Optimus Prime to lure the Autobots to their doom.

Detailed synopsis
Basically, the Decepticons find some corlonium crystals, which make anything electronic that they touch go kaboom unless insulated. Hoping to trick the Autobots into investigating the crystals, Megatron makes a remote-controlled clone of Optimus Prime. Naturally, the Autobots figure things out, the clone goes kaboom, and the Decepticons run away.

:Kup is an Autobot in the Generation 1 continuity family.

Kup is a tough old coot. He's almost as old as rust, in fact, and he was plinking Decepticons with acid bursts from his trusty musket laser long before most of you turbo-revvin' young punks were born. In his day, lasers didn't need to use light; they did whatever they were told to do and liked it.

He's probably had a thousand adventures, has Kup, and he'll be glad to relate a story of any one of them at any time to a willing audience. The Dinobots love Kup's war stories, and don't seem to mind when he inadvertently leaves a piece out or changes the story between retellings. Old memory chips'll do that to you. Other Autobots can be less patient, and Kup finds this disrespectful and irritating. If there's one thing Kup dislikes it's when young punks don't respect their elders. If they'd only listen they might learn something. Hot Rod is one of the worst offenders in this way, but he's a good ladbot and Kup will straighten him out sooner or later, even if it takes a tank of Sharkticons.

Occasionally, Kup's vast experience gets in his way. When a situation doesn't remind him of anything, he has trouble figuring out what to do. This doesn't happen very much.

Though it is not yet established when Kup joined the Earth-bound Autobots, he was stationed at Autobot City during the 2005 invasion by the Decepticons. He was supervising construction efforts undertaken by Huffer and other workers when this work was interrupted by an impetuous drive-through by Hot Rod. Kup was determined to straighten out the adventure-seeking youth.

After the Decepticons began their attack, Kup and Hot Rod were trapped outside of Autobot City's fortress-like defenses. Thanks to an attempted hull breach by the Insecticons, Kup and Hot Rod entered a small gap in one of Autobot City's heavy blast doors -- in the process, Kup crunched Kickback's skull by running over it.

Inside the city, Kup and Hot Rod joined Arcee and Springer in rigging an explosives launcher into place to help defend against the might of Devastator. With the arrival of Optimus Prime the next day, the tide of battle was turned and the Decepticons were defeated -- but at a terrible price.

Following the events of the movie, Kup served as an advisor to the newly-minted Rodimus Prime.

Years later on the planet Nebulos, Kup encountered the Nebulan resistance against The Hive. Using Targetmaster technology stolen from the Decepticons, Kup was partnered with the Nebulan Recoil, who apparently then chewed his ear off about their leader, Optimus Prime.

Headmasters anime
Kup and Fortress were old friends.

Marvel Comics continuity
Generation 1
:(Note: Events in italics occurred only in the Marvel UK books.)

Several hundred years ago, Kup became afflicted with combat fatigue, a loss of nerves and will brought on by too many millions of years of non-stop fighting. Considering himself a liability to the Autobot cause, Kup went into "retirement" -- wandering space alone in his starship, waiting for the end to eventually take him. He was shaken out of his misery when he crossed paths with a pair of Tyroxian fighters attempted to destroy a lone spacecraft. Spurred into action, Kup disabled the pursuers and brought the hunted pilot on-board, surprisingly finding him to be a fellow Autobot, Hot Rod. Hot Rod was thrilled to have found aid, and eagerly tried to recruit Kup into helping him return to Tyroxia and save his comrade Blurr, but Kup wasn't interested in getting involved any further, and only agreed to take Hot Rod back to Cybertron. The young punk reprogrammed the ship's navigation computers, though, and landed on Tyroxia to rescue Blurr by himself. Kup was finally shaken out of his funk when he realized that Hot Rod represented everything he used to be, and single-handedly saved Hot Rod and Blurr from their Tyroxian tormentors. His fighting spirit restored, Kup returned to Cybertron with the two Autobots, and joined Fortress Maximus' troop alongside his new allies.

When Fortress Maximus became disheartened by the neverending cycle of violence on Cybertron, he made plans to escape the war and set up a new life on the planet Nebulos. Kup and many of his top warriors chose to follow their leader to this new world, aboard the starship Steelhaven. Tragically, a series of incidents and misunderstandings brought the Autobots and Nebulans to the brink of war within days of their arrival. Kup was all for forcibly teaching the Nebulans some manners, but Fortress Maximus forbade it. In a desperate attempt to show their true intentions, Fort Max, Kup and several others disarmed themselves in front of the Nebulan gates. Furthermore, Fortress Maximus and four of his lieutenants beheaded themselves and agreed to leave their lifeless heads and bodies, as well as their various weapons, in Nebulan custody so that serious peace talks could be conducted. Kup took over command of the Autobot wilderness camp in Fortress Maximus' absence.

Matters quickly deteriorated after the arrival of the Decepticons, and two factions of Nebulans joined with both Autobots and Decepticons through bio-mechanical engineering to become Headmasters. Events turned against the Autobots, as Lord Zarak, the Nebulan politician binary-bonded to Decepticon leader Scorponok, was able to sway public opinion in favor of the Decepticons, labelling the Autobots as renegades and taking their Headmasters prisoner. Some Nebulans remained loyal to Fortress Maximus' partner, Galen, and travelled to the Autobot camp to forge an alliance. Making use of a new form of bio-mechanical engineering, Kup and the other weaponless Autobots were teamed with Nebulan Targetmasters to replace their lost guns. Kup personally was teamed with Recoil. As the conflict continued, though, both camps of Nebulans began to realize the devastation they were causing to their homeworld, and decided to quit Nebulos and travel to Earth in search of other Transformers. The crew of Steelhaven soon found themselves linked with the Ark's Autobots, and under the overall command of Optimus Prime.

Generation 2
Dreamwave comics continuity
During the Cybertronian War's earlier years, a young Kup served alongside Ironhide and Wheeljack under the command of Grimlock. He appeared to be the only one who would speak up against Grimlock. When Optimus Prime and Megatron disappeared in a prototype Space Bridge Accident, Kup followed his unit to the Lightning Strike Coalition offshoot of the Autobot faction.
Along with Arcee, Blaster, Hot Rod and Wheelie, Kup was part of a resistance group during Shockwave's control of Cybertron.

Teletraan Go! Go! mini-comics
Kup stopped a feisty Wheelie from annoying Teletraan 15. When 15 thanked him, he gave her a big old spine-cracking hug.

IDW comics continuity
Kup is extremely old. In years past, he's trained dozens of Autobots, including Prowl, Springer, Sideswipe, Sunstreaker, Hot Rod, and even Optimus Prime.

At some point, he and Outback crash-landed on a mysterious planet covered with radioactive crystals. Over time, Kup was slowly driven insane from the radiation; he talked to the dead corpse of Outback as though he were still alive (and used his disembodied arm as a club) and believed that zombies were attacking him when he shut down for the night. In reality, these zombies were fellow Autobots sent to rescue him, and Kup killed several of them before Springer managed to get a specialist in to extract the aging Autobot. Unfortunately, due to the damage Kup sustained from the radiation, his incompatibility with modern Transformers tech due to his age and stubborn unwillingness to upgrade, and a near-meltdown of his spark, he was placed on life support upon arriving aboard Ark-17, and it is unknown if he will recover - physically or mentally. Spotlight: Kup
Fresh from their escape from the not-destroyed Ark, the Decepticons open fire upon Sunstorm. Their attacks have no effect as Sunstorm barely notices the blaster fire as he preaches his dogma. Uninterested in Sunstorm's proclamations of salvation, the Combaticons reassemble into Bruticus. Sunstorm even laughs at the monstrous combiner as he focuses an attack on Bruticus's head - still wounded from Brawn's attack earlier. Seeking more prey, Sunstorm attacks the Autobot Supply Vessel Orion as it descends. Seeing even the Orion crippled by Sunstorm, Starscream characteristically decides to retreat. Sunstorm chases after, leaving the Orion to make an extremely rough landing into the terrain bellow.

On Cybertron, Prowl and Ironhide monitor some unsuccessful training exercises in which a team of new Autobot recruits were bested in combat by a trio of training droids. The two check up on Optimus Prime, who Hoist has in a CR Chamber to undergo repairs after having the Matrix torn out of him by Shockwave. Ultra Magnus walks in, fully functional and back in his armor. Prowl then receives a communication from the Protectobots who have discovered the ruins of Shockwave's lab from last issue.

Sunstorm chases Starscream beneath surface of the ocean to the Nemesis, where Starscream readies one of his contingency plans. For safety, he has the ship's computer do a security scan for any intruders, and the scan returns negative. But despite this scan, Starscream is ambushed by Sunstorm, who reveals that the two are actually siblings.

Brawn beats into a fallen Bruticus, while Ratchet expresses some regret over having had to destroy The Ark. But Bumblebee tries to get Ratchet to look on the upside - the Orion is here and the Powerdashers will be able to repair it, so that it will function as the Earth-Autobot's new base. But Cliffjumper and Brawn remind everybody how suspicious it is that the human element to the conflict has remained uncharacteristically quiet - but they're unaware that their very conversation happens to be monitored by a black helicopter from a human military.

Starscream recounts to Sunstorm how his crew of Decepticons was able to take control of Sky Lynx and scan new alt modes for the Combaticons. Things were going fairly well until Sunstorm arrived and threw a monkey wrench into Starscream's plans. Sunstorm justifies his actions by explaining how he's on a holy quest from the oracle to lead all Transformers to Heaven. Starscream mocks Sunstorm's gospel, and when Sunstorm gets angry, he notices the larger figure standing behind him.

Hours later, the Powerdashers board back onto the Orion, having repaired much of the damage done in the crash. Bumblebee and Ratchet get ready to board the ship after activating it's stealth mode, when they're attacked by Starscream and his new bodyguard|

Items of note
*Yea, that cover is awesome. So awesome it was the only cover made, that way, everybody gets it!
*The training droids are of a similar design to the training droid Hot Rod fought against briefly in The Transformers: The Movie.
*Starscream seems able to access the Nemesis fine, while last issue he was dissapointed that he would be unable to access the Nemesis without The Ark remaining functional. It's later claified that he needed The Ark to harvest for components to use in repairing The Nemesis.
*Optimus Prime appears different than he did in War and Peace. His design holding more similarities to the (then recently released) 20th Anniversary Optimus Prime. However this could just be attributed to the different artist.

:Centurion is an automaton from the Marvel Comics UK portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

Centurion is a tall blue, gold and silver robot with a cannon originally mounted on his right shoulder but later moved the the left one. Originally he was a mindless robot, designed by humans as a piloted machine to fight the threat the Transformers posed to Earth, but may have later gained sentience.

Fiction
Marvel Comics UK continuity
Centurion was built by the Intelligence and Information Institute (Triple-I) as a way to battle the Transformers threat. It required a human controller that was linked to the robot remotely from a fortified control room located below Portland, Oregon. Triple-I kidnapped Professor Morris to be the controller because of his experience controlling the Dinobot Swoop.

Centurion was activated ahead of schedule to prevent Joy Meadows from exposing Robot-Master as a fraud and embarrassing Triple-I. Morris was ordered to eliminate Joy using Centurion, but once linked to the control machine Morris forgot his orders and became blinded by battle lust. He attacked Megatron who was also looking to silence Joy.

During the battle Swoop and the Dinobots were able to rescue Joy and Centurion followed them, the sight of Swoop having snapped Morris from his madness. He then helped the Dinobots fend off the Decepticons who were still determined to capture Joy. Abandoned by Triple-I, Morris was left locked in his control room where he swore vengeance on his kidnappers. He then caused Centurion to leave with the Dinobots.

Sometime later Centurion wandered off from the Dinobots to investigate a strange meteorite impact. He discovered Galvatron who had recently traveled back in time to the twentieth century. Galvatron, temporarily disoriented, attacked and destroyed Centurion after mistaking him for Rodimus Prime in his madness.

Centurion’s parts were later recovered by the Dinobots and once he became Autobot leader Grimlock insisted that Wheeljack rebuilt Centurion in preference to other Autobots more in need of repair.

It is unclear what happened to Centurion and Professor Morris at this point. After being rebuilt Centurion appeared to become sentient and Professor Morris’ fate remained unknown.

Feeling guilty that he had been repaired before other more deserving Autobots, Centurion sacrificed himself to stop Megatron from killing Grimlock, Blades and a team from Action Force. He and Megatron ended up fused together at the bottom of the river Thames in London after being engulfed in a massive explosion.

His body was later raised from the Thames along with Megatron’s by the human entrepreneur Richard Branson, who was attempting to clean the river in the name of environmentalism (and publicity). The bodies were captured by the Decepticons who wanted to revive Megatron as a weapon against Galvatron. They later separated Megatron from Centurion. His fate is unknown but presumably he was destroyed.

Fiction
G1 Animated Series
As originally introduced, energon cubes seemed as though they could only be created by Soundwave More Than Meets The Eye, Part 1, who generated the empty cube framework from his similarly-shaped chest, but later, several other Decepticons proved able to produce them as well. It seemed as if energon cubes were a recent Decepticon invention -- precisely when they were concieved is unclear -- as the Autobots were apparently unaware of them until their reawakening on Earth in 1984, when Hound described them to Prime as simply "some kind of cube" (Though they existed 4 Million Years prior to 1985 according to the G1 episode "War Dawn"...). By 2005, however, the Autobots had begun to use energon cubes for power as well.

Exactly how an energon cube operates is unclear, especially as their framework appears to be some sort of self-sustaining force field with no internal mechanisms. Most frequently, the empty cube is simply attached to or placed near the energy source from which it is to drain power, and the energy in question is automatically converted into liquid energon that fills the cube. Energon cubes have proven able to transform a vast array of resources into energon, including electricity, magma, oil and steam. The liquid energon within energon cubes is a glowing pink color, although the cubes could also be compressed for easy storage and transport, causing them to take on an irridescent rainbow effect.

Beast Wars
In Beast Wars, the naturally-occuring energon on prehistoric Earth appeared only in an unstable, highly-explosive raw crystalline form. However, after the Planet Buster baked Earth's surface, the crystals were all either incinerated or somehow "converted" into more stabe cubes. These cubes no longer emitted the dangerous radiation which prompted the Beast Warriors to adopt their beast modes in the first place. They were significantly smaller than G1 cubes and colored blue rather than pink. Rather than some sort of force field containing liquid energon, these smaller cubes may have simply been a different configuration of energon crystal, much as substances like salt can exist as cubical grains but can also grow into more traditional crystalline forms. Blackarachnia threatened to detonate an energon cube near her head if Tarantulas would not remove the mind-link he had with her. The explosion would have killed them both via the link, so Tarantulas did remove it. Tangled Web

Toy
Energon Cubes were available with Takara's "TF Collection" reissue of the Insecticons, and the set's redeco, the Collector's Edition Insectron Clone Army (Shothole, Salvo and Zaptrap) box set released in Japan in 2004.

There were also "energon cube" accessories available with the fast-food kids meal premiums in European McDonald's restaraunts. These cubes were little more than a cheap, battery powered gimmick (the battery couldn't be replaced; the triangle-headed screws used by McD's are notoriously impossible to remove) that would make sound or light the toy up. The cubes were interchangable, but not all of them were "compatible," so to speak - Unicron's light-up feature didn't work on the more opaque plastic of the other toys.

Merchandise
Released along side the Movie Preview protoform figures, Energon now takes on the delicious form of candy! Held inside clear, plastic containers, the "energon" inside is more or less flavorless balls of condensed sugar with articial colors. The cubes are held together by stickers, depicting scenes from G1. the larger cube, made of 8 smaller ones, can be open and folded, in one direction, until it returns to its original position.

Out of the eight cubes, only two have candy in them. Most of the art on the cube is taken from Dreamwave art by Superstar Funana, with the exception of two parts that feature art by Don Figueroa
