Whereas Sumdac focuses on robotics, Black's expertise is in the area of biotechnology. However, his constant loss of business to Sumdac Systems has left Black bitter toward machines, including the sentient kind. An accident in testing a new corrosive designed to melt Autobot armor left him with the ability to melt anything he touches...and left a few screws loose, as he became the supervillain Meltdown.
Prometheus Black's biotechnology business was highly successful because it played off the citizens of Detroit's fear of <strike>illegal immigrants</strike> robots stealing their jobs. Much of his money was made on makeovers of some of the city's less physically gifted individuals, but he finally staged a promotion aimed at getting himself a contract with the city's police force. Pitting the seemingly frail old man Colossus Rhodes against Bumblebee, he hoped to win the support of Captain Fanzone. Unfortunately, Rhodes's rampage in the parking lot convinced Fanzone to recommend canceling all of Black's contracts with the city, leaving Black financially ruined. His venture capital backers, represented by Porter C. Powell, pulled out.

Discovering a corrosive from Bumblebee's systems, Black attempted to make an acid which would melt Autobot body armor. However, a lab accident caused the acid to bond with Black. Now calling himself Meltdown, he decided to take his revenge on Sumdac. Meltdown broke into Sumdac Tower and nearly killed the "nerd". However, Bumblebee managed to save Sumdac, and Ratchet imprisoned Meltdown in a force field. Total Meltdown
Survival of the Fittest
Meltdown and Colossus discovered the Dinobots' island, and using his ability to corrode strong alloys, he forced the Dinobots into servitude. His new goal was the creation of "human transformers". However, his early experiments (one involving his lawyer) were failures, and he decided to try again, this time with a child. He sent Swoop to kidnap Sari, but Prowl, Bulkhead and Captain Fanzone's interference not only put a stop to his plan but freed the Dinobots...whose first decision was to try and rend Meltdown limb from limb. Prowl gave him a choice: Dinobots or prison. Surprise, surprise, he chose prison. Survival of the Fittest
Captain Fanzone is the apparent head of the Detroit police department. He hates machines, but in an "I'm old" sort of way rather than being evil or anything. However, despite his oft-repeated mantra of "This is why I hate machines" when ever some device in his near vicinty goes on the tritz (often with comedically embarrassing results), he's pragmatic enough to make use of technology when needed. For example, he's a world champion at yelling at subordinates through megaphones for added effect. And firing heavy weaponry at rampaging robots.

Despite his endless battle with the march of progress and general poor luck, Fanzone is a good cop, dedicated to protecting the people of his city. He's also not a bad guy to have in a brawl. He doesn't completely trust the Autobots, but he's at least assured that they mean well and, like him, are here to protect and serve the city.
Along with machines, he also hates lawyers.

It was the beginning of a bad day when Captain Fanzone got a call for all units to respond to Sumdac Systems down by Lake Erie. (It was in the middle of his lunch break.) Taking command of the assembled emergency units, Fanzone quickly realized that they were in over their heads fighting a rampaging cybernetic bug-slug, and he ordered all humans to fall back and allow the drones to deal with the creature. When he noticed four cars refusing to fall back, he demanded to know who they were...at which point he realized a cop bike had no driver, and his own car was among the group. It got even weirder when it turned out they were alien robots, but some little girl managed to talk the cops down from shooting at the invaders.

Several days later, Fanzone, the Mayor, Isaac Sumdac, and that robot that looks like his car were taken hostage by an evil jet, but were saved by the aforementioned little girl and the cop bike. As the cop bike took him down, Fanzone declared that this is why he hates machines. Thankless primate. Transform and Roll Out!

Fanzone was courted by Prometheus Black, who hoped to use the Captain's mistrust of machines in general and Sumdac products in specific to win his company a contract with the Detroit police department. However, once he saw the berserk rage that Colossus Rhodes displayed when smashing up the parking lot of an arena, he decided he didn't much like Black's biotechnology either. Not long after, he presided over a demonstration of new Sumdac models which proved to still have a few bugs in the system. Sumdac mentioned that these models had much better recognition systems, thus avoiding the unfortunate incident with the Captain's wife. However, sabotage courtesy of the newly minted supervillain Meltdown ensured that the new robots were still far from ready for prime-time. Total Meltdown

When police responded to the rampage of the Dinobots, Captain Fanzone arrived and asked how bad it was into his megaphone...to an officer who was standing right next to him. The officer pointed at the rampaging robots, as a mechanical triceratops sent a car flying through the air, which hit Fanzone's car, crushing it. Captain Fanzone remained completely unmoved, then grabbed a bazooka from a nearby officer and fired at the triceratops...which promptly ate the projectile. Fanzone again proclaimed his dislike of machines. Blast from the Past
Captain Fanzone accompanied a number of DPD officers to a military base where the Decepticons Blitzwing and Lugnut had been sighted. He was quite miffed to find that the two giant alien robots had apparently vanished into thin air, unaware that the two had adopted Earth modes and were hiding in plain sight. Lost and Found (Animated episode)
Detroit, Michigan is a city in the United States of America. It is located near Lake Erie.

Transformers Animated
Detroit was once the "Motor City": the automobile manufacturing capital of the world. By the 22nd Century, Detroit had once again become a leading manufacturing hub -- for robots. As for what happened to the city between those two periods, well, who knows?

The city's robotics industry was led by (and may have consisted solely of) the Sumdac Systems corporation. Most of the competition proved less than inspiring. This reliance on a single, monolithic industry is certain to provide economic stability for all time.

The city had a newly unveiled mass transit system, sponsored by Sumdac Systems.

The city then became home to a team of five robotic superheroes, the Autobots. Having crashed aboard their ship some fifty years earlier in Lake Erie, they awoke and appointed themselves guardians and defenders of the city's humanity. When one of their old foes showed up in town, they ended up trashing a fair bit of the city. Not to be deterred, they worked hard to help rebuild it; this involved hitting things with an ax, naturally. The Autobots made their home in an abandoned early 20th Century factory. Transform and Roll Out!

Poor Detroit continued to suffer a great deal of robot-inflicted calamities after that. Among their troubles were robots flinging flaming fuel tanks into the air Home Is Where the Spark Is, robots smashing an entire parking lot full of cars Blast from the Past, robots getting thrown through the roof of the local sports arena Total Meltdown, robots inducing rolling electrical blackouts across the city Thrill of the Hunt, robots disguised as rocket-powered cars crashing into things Nanosec, giant evil robot spiders Along Came a Spider, and a massive robot rebellion Sound and Fury.
Animated is notable for the fact it sees several G1 voice actors reprise their old roles (Susan Blu, Corey Burton, John Moschitta, etc.), and for the fact this is the first Transformers show featuring David Kaye where he won't be voicing Megatron.

Series details
The series eschews the ever-continuing space opera storylines of the past few anime to return to the episodic approach of Beast Wars; each episode will be a standalone story, but with an overall story arc that stretches through the whole season. The focus is being put firmly on characterization, dynamic action, and humor.

The episodes center not only on the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons, but also on the Autobots' interactions with many of Detroit's human supervillain denizens, including a maladjusted marksman, a speedy racer, and a guy who looks good in a pimp suit. The idea is to present the Decepticons as more of an ongoing background threat instead of having them be repeatedly defeated each episode and look like bumbling fools. Rather, the arrival of a Decepticon in battle is supposed to be a big deal, requiring multiple Autobots working together to stop even a single one. The human villains will give the Autobots "everyday" threats--and no doubt their schemes will turn out to be the result of Decepticon treachery. Note that human adversaries are not new in Transformers continuity. However, humans as major threats is very uncommon.

Season 2 is already in the works, and seasons 3 and 4 are quite possible.

While the series is not a sequel to the recent live-action movie, they have many thematic elements in common, most notably the central role of the All Spark cube and the revelation that all modern technology has been reverse-engineered from the dormant body of Megatron. Hasbro also carried over some design elements from the live-action movie into Animated designs, including not just the aforementioned cube but also Ratchet's medical readout striped deco and Megatron's helmet. These are meant to be "connection points," helping kids who had seen the theatrical film but had no prior Transformers experience ease into understanding the new series.
Reception
Transformers Animated debuted January 5, 2008, at 10:30am EST as the number one television show among boys 6-11 in both cable and network television. In addition, the strength of the showing helped lift the ratings of all its neighboring shows in Cartoon Network's "Dynamite Action" scheduling block.

Trivia
* Transformers: Animated reunites Jeff Bennett, Bill Fagerbakke and Cree Summer as regular cast members. Respectively, they have previously voiced Brooklyn, Broadway and Hyena from the Gargoyles series, three characters not unlike their Transformers counterparts. Another voice actor for Gargoyles, Kath Soucie, has made a guest appearance.

Beast Wars is a Transformers franchise that began in 1996, following the end of the Generation 2 toyline.

Beast Wars follows two factions of Transformers, the Maximals and the Predacons, who are accidentally transported from the future to Earth's distant past.

"Beast Wars" is frequently used as a catchall term for the Beast Era in which Beast Wars and other series occur.

Beast Wars was directly followed by the Beast Machines franchise.

Franchise Elements
The Beast Wars franchise featured the following primary components:
*A toyline — (1996-2000)
*A cartoon series — (1996-1998) called "Beasties" in many overseas markets.
*A manga series to go with seasons 2/3 - Japan only, 'natch.
* A video game for PC and PS based on Beast Wars.
* A video game for PS and N64 based on Beast Wars.

Expanded Universe
There are several 'expanded' Beast Wars storylines featuring events taking place 'just offscreen' of the cartoon series. Though the events of cartoon series are understood to occur just as had been portrayed, the context may be different, taking place in different time period, etc. These contradictory stories all co-exist within the vast Transformers Multiverse.
* From 1997 - 2004 3H featured a series of comics, toy-exclusives and text stories set in the same continuity as the Beast Wars and Beast Machines cartoon series, continuing into the Transformers: Universe series.
* In 2006 IDW published The Gathering, a 4-issue comic book occurring parallel to the final season of the Beast Wars cartoon. A followup is planned for late 2007.

Other expanded storylines are less congruent with the original cartoon, and are perhaps better considered 'alternate' versions rather than expanded stories.
* Dreamwave Productions planned a Beast Wars comic book series, but the company declared bankruptcy in 2004 with only 1 'sneak-peak' story published. A framing sequence to their G1 profile series featuring BW Megatron establishes that Dreamwave's version of the Beast Wars has some significant divergences from the original cartoon.

* Fun Publications Timelines imprint (2005 — ) has published several Beast Wars comics and text stories.

"Other" Beast Wars
* The initial toys and the mini-comic packed with the basic Optimus Primal VS Megatron two-pack toy strongly implied that Beast Wars was a continuation of the previous Autobot/Decepticon conflict on present day Earth, with Primal and Megatron simply new forms of the original Optimus Prime and original Megatron. This setting was abandoned when the 1996 cartoon established its futuristic setting. This remains an intriguing micro-continuity.
* A version of the Beast Wars occoured in the past of the Unicron Trilogy continuity family. One text story (Fire in the Dark) in the 2004 Transformers Legends anthology is set in this version of Beast Wars. Beast Wars (Armada)
* The 2007 live-action movie franchise has a version of the Beast Wars in its past.

A Dramatic Change / Ruined FOREVER
The major change in direction for Transformers followed organizational changes within Hasbro. Hasbro had recentlyfact bought out their rival toy manufacturer, Kenner, and in 1995, they transferred their boys toylines from the Hasbro headquarters in Rhode Island to Kenner's Cincinnati, Ohio offices. Kenner was asked to revitalize the brand with new ideas, and that is exactly what they did.

Beast Wars was the first complete reinvention of the Transformers brand, discarding the previous setting/characters/factions to create a new story, set several hundred years in the future. Transformers in the Beast Era are much smaller (often human-sized) and transform into 'fleshy' non-robotic animals. Initially met with outrage by fans (for a variety of reasons) Beast Wars would eventually become highly regarded, largely due to the exceptional quality of the cartoon series. It is now not unusual for even longtime "Generation 1" fans to consider BW to be their favorite Transformers franchise.

Almost every 'Generation 1' series that followed has established Beast Wars as 'the future.'
