Prometheus Black's biotechnology business was highly successful because it played off the citizens of Detroit's fear of <strike>illegal immigrants</strike> robots stealing their jobs. Much of his money was made on makeovers of some of the city's less physically gifted individuals, but he finally staged a promotion aimed at getting himself a contract with the city's police force. Pitting the seemingly frail old man Colossus Rhodes against [[Bumblebee (Animated)|Bumblebee]], he hoped to win the support of [[Captain Fanzone]]. Unfortunately, Rhodes's rampage in the parking lot convinced Fanzone to recommend canceling all of Black's contracts with the city, leaving Black financially ruined. His venture capital backers, represented by [[Porter C. Powell]], pulled out.

Discovering a corrosive from Bumblebee's systems, Black attempted to make an acid which would melt Autobot body armor. However, a lab accident caused the acid to bond with Black. Meltdown and Colossus discovered the Dinobots' island, and using his ability to corrode strong alloys, he forced the Dinobots into servitude. His new goal was the creation of "human transformers". However, his early experiments (one involving his lawyer) were failures, and he decided to try again, this time with a child. He sent Swoop to kidnap Sari, but Prowl, Bulkhead and Captain Fanzone's interference not only put a stop to his plan but freed the Dinobots...whose first decision was to try and rend Meltdown limb from limb. '''Captain Fanzone''' is the apparent head of the [[Detroit]] police department. He hates machines, but in an "I'm old" sort of way rather than being evil or anything. However, despite his oft-repeated mantra of "''This'' is why I hate machines" when ever some device in his near vicinty goes on the tritz (often with comedically embarrassing results), he's pragmatic enough to make use of technology when needed. For example, he's a world champion at yelling at subordinates through megaphones for added effect. And firing heavy weaponry at [[Dinobot (Animated)|rampaging robot]]s.

Despite his endless battle with the march of progress and general poor luck, Fanzone is a good cop, dedicated to protecting the people of his city. He's also not a bad guy to have in a brawl. He doesn't ''completely'' trust the [[Autobot]]s, but he's at least assured that they mean well and, like him, are here to protect and serve the city.

Along with machines, he also hates lawyers.

It was the beginning of a bad day when Captain Fanzone got a call for all units to respond to [[Sumdac Systems]] down by Lake Erie. (It was in the middle of his lunch break.) Taking command of the assembled emergency units, Fanzone quickly realized that they were in over their heads fighting a rampaging cybernetic bug-slug, and he ordered all humans to fall back and allow the drones to deal with the creature. When he noticed four cars refusing to fall back, he demanded to know who they were...at which point he realized [[Prowl (Animated)|a cop bike]] had no driver, and his own car was among the group. It got even weirder when it turned out they were [[Transformer|alien robot]]s, but [[Sari Sumdac|some little girl]] managed to talk the cops down from shooting at the invaders.

Several days later, Fanzone, the Mayor, [[Isaac Sumdac]], and [[Bumblebee (Animated)|that robot that looks like his car]] were taken hostage by [[Starscream (Animated)|an evil jet]], but were saved by the aforementioned little girl and the cop bike. Fanzone was courted by [[Prometheus Black]], who hoped to use the Captain's mistrust of machines in general and Sumdac products in specific to win his company a contract with the Detroit police department. However, once he saw the berserk rage that [[Colossus Rhodes]] displayed when smashing up the parking lot of an arena, he decided he didn't much like Black's biotechnology either. Not long after, he presided over a demonstration of new Sumdac models which proved to still have a few bugs in the system. Sumdac mentioned that these models had much better recognition systems, thus avoiding the unfortunate incident with the Captain's wife. However, sabotage courtesy of the newly minted supervillain Meltdown ensured that the new robots were still far from ready for prime-time. {{storylink|Total Meltdown}}

When police responded to the rampage of the [[Dinobot (Animated)|Dinobot]]s, Captain Fanzone arrived and asked how bad it was into his megaphone...to an officer who was standing right next to him. The officer pointed at the rampaging robots, as [[Snarl (Animated)|a mechanical triceratops]] sent a car flying through the air, which hit Fanzone's car, crushing it. Captain Fanzone remained completely unmoved, then grabbed a bazooka from a nearby officer and fired at the triceratops...which promptly ate the projectile. The focus is being put firmly on characterization, dynamic action, and humor.

The episodes center not only on the war between the [[Autobot]]s and the [[Decepticon]]s, but also on the Autobots' interactions with many of [[Detroit]]'s [[human]] supervillain denizens, including a [[Angry Archer|maladjusted marksman]], a [[Nanosec|speedy racer]], and a guy who [[Prometheus Black|looks good in a pimp suit]]. The idea is to present the Decepticons as more of an ongoing background threat instead of having them be repeatedly defeated each episode and look like bumbling fools. Rather, the arrival of a Decepticon in battle is supposed to be a big deal, requiring multiple Autobots working together to stop even a single one. The human villains will give the Autobots "everyday" threats--and no doubt their schemes will turn out to be the result of Decepticon treachery. ===Expanded Universe===
There are several 'expanded' Beast Wars storylines featuring events taking place 'just offscreen' of the cartoon series. Though the ''events'' of cartoon series are understood to occur just as had been portrayed, the ''context'' may be different, taking place in different time period, etc. These contradictory stories all co-exist within the vast Transformers [[Multiverse]].
* From 1997 - 2004 [[3H]] featured a series of comics, toy-exclusives and text stories set in the same continuity as the Beast Wars and Beast Machines cartoon series, continuing into the [[Universe (franchise)|Transformers: Universe]] series.
* In 2006 [[IDW]] published [[The Gathering]], a 4-issue comic book occurring parallel to the final season of the Beast Wars cartoon. A followup is planned for late 2007.

Other expanded storylines are less congruent with the original cartoon, and are perhaps better considered 'alternate' versions rather than expanded stories.
* [[Dreamwave Productions]] planned a Beast Wars comic book series, but the company declared bankruptcy in 2004 with only [[Ain't No Rat|1 'sneak-peak']] story published.<ref>The planned Dreamwave Beast Wars comic is believed to be very similar to the later IDW Beast Wars series, which would be produced by the same writer and artist.</ref> A framing sequence to their [[More Than Meets The Eye|G1 profile series]] featuring [[Megatron (BW)|BW Megatron]] establishes that Dreamwave's version of the Beast Wars has some [[Golden Disk (MTMTE)|significant divergences]] from the original cartoon.

* [[Fun Publications]] [[Timelines]] imprint (2005 — ) has published several Beast Wars comics and text stories.

* The initial toys and the [[mini-comic]] packed with the basic Optimus Primal VS Megatron two-pack toy strongly implied that Beast Wars was a continuation of the previous Autobot/Decepticon conflict on present day Earth, with Primal and Megatron simply new forms of the original Optimus Prime and original Megatron. This setting was abandoned when the 1996 cartoon established its futuristic setting. This remains an intriguing [[Micro-Continuities|micro-continuity]].
* A version of the Beast Wars occoured in the past of the [[Unicron Trilogy]] [[continuity family]]. One text story ([[Fire in the Dark]]) in the 2004 [[Transformers Legends]] anthology is set in this version of Beast Wars. {{see|Beast Wars (Armada)}}
* The [[Movie (franchise)|2007 live-action movie franchise]] has a version of the Beast Wars in its past.<ref>[[Sector Seven]] had the shattered [[Golden Disk (Voyager)|golden disk]] (and possibly the [[Covenant of Primus]]) in its archives 1898, some 80 years before the disk's creation.</ref><ref>The [[Sector Seven (game)|Sector Seven Alternate Reality Game]] indicates Sector Seven is at least partially aware of the events of the Beast Wars as early as 1983, as they are mentioned in the [[Takara Agreement]].</ref>

==A Dramatic Change / [[Ruined FOREVER]]==
The major change in direction for Transformers followed organizational changes within [[Hasbro]]. Hasbro had recently{{fact}} bought out their rival toy manufacturer, [[Kenner]], and in 1995, they transferred their boys toylines from the Hasbro headquarters in Rhode Island to Kenner's Cincinnati, Ohio offices. Kenner was asked to revitalize the brand with new ideas, and that is exactly what they did.

Beast Wars was the first complete reinvention of the [[Transformers brand]], discarding the previous setting/characters/factions to create a new story, set several hundred years in the future. Transformers in the Beast Era are much smaller (often human-sized) and transform into 'fleshy' non-robotic animals. Initially met with outrage by fans (for a variety of reasons) Beast Wars would eventually become highly regarded, largely due to the exceptional quality of the [[Beast Wars (cartoon)|cartoon series]]. It is now not unusual for even longtime "Generation 1" fans to consider BW to be their favorite Transformers franchise.

Almost every '[[Generation 1]]' series that followed has established Beast Wars as 'the future.'
