Transformers: War for Cybertron is a video game developed by High Moon Studios and published by Activision, set before the Transformers take their war to Earth. Hasbro intends it to act as a foundation for Transformers franchise storylines for years to come, and so they've been giving a lot of input and stressing character development. The upcoming book Exodus: The Official History of the War for Cybertron may be a tie-in to the game and its fiction.

Unlike previous Transformers video games which feature distinctly separate campaigns for the Autobots and the Decepticons (traditionally depicting the playable faction utterly defeating the other), War for Cybertron will feature a single, linear storyline; the Decepticon campaign occurs chronologically before the Autobot campaign, but fans can play through them in whichever order they prefer.

The game itself will be an over-the-shoulder third-person shooter in which the player can choose his character from a small roster of either Autobots or Decepticons. The game will be released on June 22, 2010, for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS and personal computers.

The game is set during the waning days of the Great War on Cybertron before coming to Earth. Megatron is searching for a dangerous power source known as Dark Energon to fuel his conquest of the planet. Optimus Prime assumes temporary command following an attack on Iacon that killed Zeta Prime, but he is not yet leader of the Autobots. Starscream joins the Decepticons as second-in-command, but does not consider either Optimus or Megatron to have the planet's best interests at heart. (We will apparently learn why Starscream is such a whopping traitor and why Megatron doesn't just kill him).

Characters
At the start of each level, the player can choose from one of three characters. The characters available will shift from level to level. Known playable characters include:
The Decepticon campaign includes a boss battle with Omega Supreme and the Autobot campaign includes defending Iacon. Trypticon appears in the IGN trailer, but he's, uh, probably not playable. Players should expect references to Cybertron locations taken from all previous Transformer stories, "things which may have only been referenced once, in one comic way back when, could be used and expanded upon."
Features
* Campaigns will be co-op both online and off for the first time in a Transformers game.
* All playable characters have two special abilities, such as absorbing health from enemies or marking targets.
* The game will run on the Unreal engine.
* High Moon is prepared to "support the game after release," meaning either patches or downloadable content.
* Online Multiplayer is being developed for the game.
* All environments, including cover, can be destroyed.
* Characters transform at any time with an easy and quick tap of the Left Analog stick. There is no "cool down" so players can transform as often and as freely as they wish.
* The ability to create your own Transformers character for multiplayer.

Production
As an early marketing campaign, the game's website included the feature "Operation Transmission Recovery": using transmission and coordinate dials, you could pick up "transmissions" from Cybertron (or "video clips" to you and me).

The art and design team did intense research (i.e. watched the original cartoon, looked at comics, and watched "typical sci-fi cool stuff" like Blade Runner) to work out the aesthetic of Cybertron; lead artist Ivan Power remarked that the original cartoon was the main inspiration, and that Cybertron wasn't shown there so they had to rewatch the same few clips "over and over". While many of the city designs are elaborate and shiny, Decepticon Kaon was deliberately designed to be sharp-edged, rusting, and slapped together to show the Decepticons weren't interested in building a functioning society.

Operation Transmission Recovery
As an early marketing campaign, the game's website included the feature "Operation Transmission Recovery": using transmission and coordinate dials, you could pick up "transmissions" from Cybertron (or "video clips/images" to you and me).

There are two dials, blue (outer) and yellow (inner). Using your mouse, you can drag the dial to set coordinates. The blue dial is set by aligning it to marks on the outer circle. When aligned, it becomes a blue ring. After that, the yellow dial is set so that signal strength is full, as indicated by a meter on the right. Once a transmission is unlocked its symbol lights up and the "Total Recovered" amount increases a little bit. When you reach 100%, it tells you how many hours remain until next batch.

As of January 12, 2010, the following transmissions (Batch 9), almost all of which are part of the second trailer (link below), were available:

The game is set during the waning days of the Great War on Cybertron before coming to Earth. Megatron is searching for a dangerous power source known as Dark Energon to fuel his conquest of the planet. Optimus Prime assumes temporary command following an attack on Iacon that killed Zeta Prime, but he is not yet leader of the Autobots. Starscream joins the Decepticons as second-in-command, but does not consider either Optimus or Megatron to have the planet's best interests at heart. (We will apparently learn why Starscream is such a whopping traitor and why Megatron doesn't just kill him).

Characters

:The Autobot Orbital Command Hub is an Autobot-manned spacestation from the Generation 1 continuity family.

The Autobot Orbital Command Hub is the central base of Autobot operations in their galactic war against the Decepticons. A massive space station, it orbits the planet Opulus.

It is on the Hub that Autobots unassigned to warfront planets are stationed, waiting on-hand in the event that they'll be needed. From these Autobots a crew can be assembled quickly to man one of the Arks.

Due to the pan-galactic nature of the war, the Autobots also use regional command hubs. Spotlight: Cyclonus
:The Breastforce are a Decepticon subgroup from the Victory portion of Generation 1.

The Breastforce <small>(tee hee!)</small> are Deathsaurus's elite troopers, comprising some of the most vile Decepticons imaginable, from murderous back-stabbers to incarcerated convicts. Deathsaurus himself is also a member of the sub-group, but the name is most often used to refer to the elite six-robot team that serves under him. The group derives their... unusual name from the Breast Animals they are partnered with, which transform from their titular <small>(snigger)</small> breastplate armor into an autonomous robotic animal or hand-held blaster. Don't let the name fool you, the Breastforce are nothing to laugh at.

<small>(giggle)</small>

The core six members of the Breastforce are:

*Leozack, Deathsaurus' second-in-command and Grumman F-14D "Tomcat" fighter jet, partnered with Lionbreast.
*Drillhorn, the tunnelling machine, partnered with Rhinobreast.
*Gaihawk, the MAPO MiG-29 "Fulcrum" fighter jet, partnered with Hawkbreast.
*Hellbat, the Dassault Rafale fighter jet, partnered with Komoribreast.
*Jarugar, the Baja buggy, partnered with Jaguarbreast.
*Killbison, the Gepard anti-aircraft tank, partnered with Bisonbreast.

Others members include:

*Deathsaurus, Decepticon Emperor of Destruction and dragon/bird-monster, partnered with Tigerbreast and Eaglebreast
*Deathcobra, the Mi-24 Hind assault helicopter, partnered with an unnamed Breast Animal.

Leozack, Drillhorn, Gaihawk, Hellbat, Jarugar and Killbison can combine to form the super-warrior Liokaiser. Deathcobra was also capable of combining with the team, but died before he got the chance.

Leozack was the first of the Breastforce to join Deathsaurus for his campaign against Earth, {{storylink|Sneak Attack! Dinoking|Sneak Attack! During the latter mission, the team's Breast Animals came to the fore, as they were unleashed upon the Autobots in the cramped quarters of the underground tunnels. Big City - Underground Terror

Leozack later summoned the fifth Breastforcer, Hellbat, to Earth, but upon witnessing his leader getting dressed down by Deathsaurus, Hellbat decided he himself would make a better leader for the Breastforce. The New Warrior - Hellbat Ever the schemer, Hellbat's honeyed words roped the rest of the Breastforce into several plots, like the theft of energy from a shuttle port Attack the Shuttle Base!! or the ransom of Marine City. Tanker Hijack Operation Since the silver-tongued sneak was usually able to pass the blame for any failures on to Leozack, none of the other Breastforce members really trusted Hellbat, and Leozack began making plans to get rid of him. Rescuing their sixth teammate, Gaihawk, from the Satellite Penitentiary on planet Micro, Rescue! Gaihawk Leozack summoned his old friend Deathcobra so that he could boot Hellbat out and the remaining six could combine into the giant robot, Liokaiser. Attempting to secure his position on the team, Hellbat petitioned Deathcobra to leave, but when a fight broke out between the two, Hellbat accidentally killed Deathcobra and blamed the murder on the Autobot Micromaster Holi. Seeking revenge, the Breastforce merged into Liokaiser and defeated Star Saber in their first battle. Unite! Liokaiser

Back on Earth, the Breastforce battled Star Saber and Road Caesar at the Schaeffer Energy plant, Battle Up of Wrath!! and then went up against Landcross in the South Pole. {{storylink|Fight to the Death!! The feral Autobot was able to blast the combiner into the barrel of the cannon, which drained his energy dry. As his body blackened, Liokasier could feel his consciousness begin to fade, and he could only manage a faint cry for help as his deactivated body drifted off into the depths of space. {{storylink|Showdown! When the Breastforce arrived to join Deathsaurus in stealing energy from Earth, Leozack made his first strike alone, but botched it by forgetting to take his Breast Animal with him. Leozack Rumbles Violently! The rest of the team later battled Star Saber in their individual forms Warrior of Love, Star Saber! and still later combined with Leozack into Liokaiser to engage the Autobot leader on Energy Planet X. Liokaiser had the upper hand in this battle, but the tide turned when his individual components began arguing amongst themselves over who would get to deliver the killing blow, and Star Saber used the opening to defeat them. The Star of Friendship, Jean and Star Saber!

Subsequent fights did not go well for Liokasier; first, he was thrashed by Star Saber when the Autobot leader combined with Victory Leo to become Victory Saber, The Strongest Partners, the Combination of Victory! and was then flattened by the united Autobots' "Five Stars of Victory" attack. {{storylink|Shine! Naturally, the Autobots pursued, and when Deathsaurus engaged Star Saber in a space battle, Leozack saw an opportunity to remove all his enemies at once. Even as his shocked teammates looked on, Leozack turned the fortress's main cannon on Deathsaurus! Deathsaurus survived the blast and fired upon the fortress with his own weapons, after which Star Saber came smashing through the fortress's control room window and slashed Leozack with his sword. Even as he collapsed in front of the Autobots, Leozack begged them not to destroy the fortress, and the true nature of the massive craft was revealed to the Autobots: It contained the Decepticons' wives and children, whom they had been fighting to protect all along. {{storylink|Heroic! The Breastforce were sold boxed with their Breast Animal partners, and consisted of seven all-new molds. The six smaller members could combine into Liokaiser (notable for his atypical almost-total lack of combiner kibble), and were also sold together in a giftset.

Leozack, Drillhorn, Killbison and Jarugar were later remolded to create the Rescue Force jet, drill, tank and buggy, respectively.

Fiction
Animated
The Nemesis was a Decepticon warship under the control of Megatron. It showed up on the outskirts of Autobot-controlled space almost immediately after the legendary All Spark was discovered by Optimus Prime and his crew of space bridge repair-bots. It attacked Prime's ship, the Ark, in an attempt to capture the All Spark. Megatron went out to attack the Ark and seize the All Spark personally, unaware his lieutenant, Starscream, had planted a bomb on him. When the bomb detonated, the Ark went out of control, plunging toward another space bridge portal. The All Spark opened the space bridge and caused a shock wave after the Ark went through, slagging the Nemesis and Starscream inside, while the other Decepticons escaped. For the next fifty solar cycles, Starscream piloted the remains the ship, searching for the All Spark to show the Decepticons he deserved to be their new leader. When its systems detected an All Spark-like energy signature from a remote star system, he went to investigate. En route, he monitored television transmissions that depicted Prime and his Autobots as the new superheroes of Detroit. Transform and Roll Out!

Its current location is unknown, as Starscream was not seen aboard it while within Earth's vicinity. The ship may have been on or near Earth when he monitored the TV transmissions, or it may not. It's possible Starscream has placed it somewhere on Earth, though it could also be in orbit or even on the Moon. It's also possible, though much less likely, that he left it somewhere much further away and traveled to Earth in an escape pod.

:The Energon Matrix is a device from the Beast Wars era of the Generation 1 continuity family.

The Energon Matrixfact is a powerful device awarded only to high-ranking members of the Maximal army, most often of Convoy rank. During Optimus Prime's time, there was only one Matrix of Leadership, but by Lio Convoy's time, at least three Matrices had been constructed.

The Energon Matrix amplifies the strength and power of the Convoy who weilds it. They can summon the power of the Energon Matrix to energize their body and amplify their natrual skills, or they can unleash the power of the Matrix in one magnificent blast. If two or more Convoys do it at once, they can combine the blasts to increase their effectiveness.

Additionally, Vector Sigma is capable of speaking through Big Convoy's Matrix, whether he likes it to or not.

Matrix bearers
The following characters are specifically known to have an Energon Matrix (exceptions are specifically noted).
*Lio Convoy
*Lio Junior (a copy of Lio Convoy's)
*Optimus Prime (Optimus Prime's Matrix was only referred to as an Energon Matrix in the Japanese version of the series, with the Matrix's nature being altered for the English dub)
Fiction
Beast Wars II
Both Lio Convoy and Optimus Primal were shown to have an Energon Matrix. When they teamed-up to take down Majin Zarak, they displayed the various functions of the Energon Matrix. Lio Convoy used the power of his Matrix to upgrade his speed by transforming himself into Flash Lio Convoy. Optimus Primal did a similar move by upgrading his strength as Burning Convoy.

After that, they then unleashed the power of their Matrices and combined the force into a "Double Matrix Blast". This move sent a torrent of powerful energy directly into Majin Zarak, killing him.

Later, Optimus Primal's Energon Matrix was destroyed along with his body by the Vok Planet Buster.

However, it should be noted that in the U.S. Beast Wars continuity Optimus Primal does not have any kind of Matrix, nor for that matter is it implied that there is more than one.

One of the most skillful, yet most anti-social members of the Maximals, Big Convoy, was shown to carry a Matrix. However, Vector Sigma took a more proactive approach with Big Convoy than with most others. After each battle, Vector Sigma would speak through Big Convoy and dispense wisdom to his new recruits who so desperately needed it. Eventually, this sentimentality rubbed off on Big Convoy and he began dispensing wisdom all on his own.

When Unicron attacked Cybertron and possessed Vector Sigma, ultimately turning Cybertron into his new body, Big Convoy's Matrix proved to be the only thing capable of stopping him. When Unicron briefly exited Vector Sigma to do battle with the Maximals, Big Convoy removed his Matrix and used it to power his Big Cannon, turning it into the Matrix Buster. Firing a powerful blast of Matrix energy into Unicron, the Chaos-bringer was seemingly destroyed and evicted from Vector Sigma.

:The Energon Matrix is a device from the Beast Wars era of the Generation 1 continuity family.

The Energon Matrixfact is a powerful device awarded only to high-ranking members of the Maximal army, most often of Convoy rank. During Optimus Prime's time, there was only one Matrix of Leadership, but by Lio Convoy's time, multiple Matrices had been constructed.

*Optimus Primal
*Lio Convoy
*Lio Junior (a copy of Lio Convoy's)
*Big Convoy (Big Convoy's Matrix was seemingly not referred to by any specific appellation. It was simply a "Matrix")
*Optimus Prime (Optimus Prime's Matrix was only referred to as an Energon Matrix in the Japanese version of the series, with the Matrix's nature being altered for the English dub)
