The '''''Cybertron''''' cartoon series was produced by [[GONZO]] and ran in the United States in the years 2005-2006, serving as the third and final part of the "[[Unicron Trilogy]]" begun by its predecessors, ''[[Armada (cartoon)|Armada]]'' and ''[[Energon (cartoon)|Energon]]''. The series premiered in the United States in July 2005.

The story centers on a [[Unicron Singularity|giant black hole]] that threatens to devour [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] and other worlds. ==Storyline==

When the destruction of [[Unicron]] results in the formation of a massive black hole, [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] is threatened, and its population is evacuated to [[Earth]], taking the forms of local vehicles and machinery to hide from humanity. As this occurs, [[Optimus Prime (Armada)|Optimus Prime]]'s elite team of [[Autobot]] warriors are approached by the ancient Transformer [[Vector Prime]], who has emerged from his resting place outside of time to inform them of the legendary [[Cyber Planet Key]]s, ancient artifacts of power which can stop the black hole and save the universe. Lost due to an accident during an attempt to create a cross-universal [[space bridge]] network, the Cyber Planet Keys now reside on four worlds somewhere in the universe—unfortunately, Vector Prime's map showing their location is stolen by [[Decepticon]] leader [[Megatron (Armada)|Megatron]], and both forces relocate to Earth as the race to find them begins.

On Earth, the Autobots befriend three human children named [[Coby Hansen|Coby]], [[Bud Hansen|Bud]] and [[Lori]], who aid them in locating the [[Omega Lock]], the control device for the Cyber Planet Keys' power. With new "Cyber Key Powers" awakened in them, the Transformers battle on many fronts, searching for the Lock on Earth while [[Hot Shot (Armada)|Hot Shot]] and [[Red Alert (Armada)|Red Alert]] head for [[Velocitron]], the "Speed Planet", resting place of the first key. As Hot Shot competes in the planet's grand racing championship to win the key from planet leader [[Override (Cybertron)|Override]], the Lock is located on Earth in the bulk of the crashed Transformer spaceship the ''[[Atlantis]]''. Soon after, Autobot [[Overhaul (Cybertron)|Overhaul]] heads for the next world, [[Jungle Planet (Cybertron)|Jungle Planet]], where the power of its Cyber Planet Key reformats him into Leobreaker. Megatron ingratiates himself with Jungle Planet ruler [[Scourge (Cybertron)|Scourge]], while at the same time, his scheming lieutenant [[Starscream (Armada)|Starscream]] teams up with the mysterious [[Sideways (RID)|Sideways]], working towards his own goals.

Ultimately, the Autobots succeed in acquiring the Keys of both Velocitron and Jungle Planet, at which point the existence of Earth's own Cyber Planet Key is revealed. Starscream makes his power play and overthrows Megatron, stealing the Omega Lock and all three keys from the Autobots and using them to grow in size and power. Their forces bolstered by the ancient Autobots from Earth and the arrival of [[Wing Saber]], who combines with Optimus Prime, the Autobots fight their way through a vengeful Megatron and defeat Starscream - but the battle is not without casualties, as Hot Shot, Red Alert and [[Scattorshot (Cybertron)|Scattorshot]] are gravely wounded and rebuilt into the even more powerful [[Cybertron Defense Team]].

Returning to Cybertron, the Autobots use the Omega Lock and Cyber Planet Keys, which awaken the spirit of their deity and creator, [[Primus]] and transform Cybertron itself into the god's body. After a battle in which Starscream taps the power of Primus and grows to planetary size—only to be defeated by Primus himself—the location of the fourth and final key is determined as [[Gigantion]], the Giant Planet. Bested by Gigantion's leader [[Metroplex (Cybertron)|Metroplex]], Megatron taps into the power of Gigantion's Cyber Planet Key to become Galvatron. Sideways, now joined by the equally mysterious [[Soundwave (Cybertron)|Soundwave]], reveals himself to be an inhabitant of [[Planet X (Cybertron)|Planet X]], a world destroyed by the Gigantions, upon whom he and Soundwave seek revenge. Galvatron blasts them and Starscream into another dimension and finally acquires the Lock and Keys for himself, intending to use their power to accelerate the universal degeneration caused by the black hole and remake the cosmos in his own image. Vector Prime sacrifices his life to get the Autobots back to Cybertron, and the five planet leaders confront Galvatron within the black hole and defeat him. With all the Cyber Planet Keys now in his possession, Primus uses their power to finally seal the black hole, ending its threat.

As the planet's various civilizations attempt to return to life as normal, Galvatron attacks the Autobots for one final time. Without any troops to call his own, Galvatron engages Optimus Prime in a one-on-one duel, and is finally destroyed for good. With this final victory, Optimus Prime begins a new space bridge initiative, and the Transformers set sail for the four corners of the universe, and new adventures.

==Differences with ''Galaxy Force''==

In contrast to ''Armada'' and ''Energon'', the dubs of which had stuck quite closely to their original Japanese counterparts (unrelenting plethora of errors notwithstanding), ''Cybertron'' went to much greater lengths to localize ''Galaxy Force''. English scripts for the series were written by [[David McDermott]], [[Marc Handler]], [[Seth Walther]], [[Stephanie Sheh]] and [[James W. Bates]] (but the series does not include episode writer credits, so precisely who wrote which episodes is left unknown).

On the most basic level, dialogue was frequently re-written, sticking to the ''intent'' of the original but adding many more colorful turns of phrase, flavor and character, doing away with much of the formality and unflappability with which the Autobots handled every situation (a common trait of the Autobots in Japanese ''Transformers'' cartoons). ''Cybertron'' would also ''add'' more dialogue to scenes that were silent in ''Galaxy Force''; in particular, the show's extensive use of [[stock footage]] was livened up with new dialogue from characters as they transformed. Paraphrased dialogue from ''[[The Transformers: The Movie]]'' was common. The show's soundtrack mostly remained unaltered; the only new music was a new theme tune recorded by [[Paul Oakenfold]], which was often used during transformation stock footage (but not with 100% consistency) and would sometimes be extended to replace the background music of the scenes that immediately followed said transformations. In other, more sparing instances, music would be replaced with ''different'' pieces from the original soundtrack; usually, this involved replacing melodramatic or "evil" music with more exciting tracks to ramp up action sequences.

A few aspects of the plot of the series were consistently modified or excised by the ''Cybertron'' dub, while some were created whole cloth. For instance, one of most notable changes of the series was the transformation of the male Nitro Convoy into the ''female'' Override, at the request of Cartoon Network. Other examples include the removal of suggestions in early ''Galaxy Force'' episodes that Coby had an unsteady relationship with his family, and the notion that Cybertron was consumed by the black hole in the first episode (since the characters were able to return to the planet later in the series without ill effect). In terms of newly-created ideas, ''Cybertron'' justified the continued presence of the Autobots' human allies Coby, Bud and Lori after their usefulness had realistically ended by crafting the concept of the [[Omega Frequency]], the signal of the [[Omega Lock]] which only they could hear, making them necessary in the search for the Lock and Keys. This particular example is indicative of ''Cybertron'''s efforts to make as much technical and logical sense as it could, where ''Galaxy Force'' was content to hand-wave many things off with [[Burning justice|Burning Justice]]. Innumerable times in the course of the cartoon, characters glow with energy that comes from nowhere; while ''Galaxy Force'' does not address this strangeness, treating it as a normal thing for Transformers to do, ''Cybertron'' regularly inserts explanations, or at least has the characters react in an amazed fashion to this unusual thing that is happening to them.

==Praise and criticism==
With the bad taste of ''Armada'' and ''Energon'' still lingering in the mouths of the fandom, ''Cybertron'' had a long way to go to make itself seem like an appealing prospect. On the English side of things, it generally succeeded: the show's dub is ''much'' more polished, lacking the myriad errors that had plagued the previous shows and bringing many distinct voices and accents into the mix, along with numerous pop-culture and ''Transformers'' references. Since the scripts had comprehensible context and some actual ''work'' put into them, the voice actors were likewise able to turn in stronger performances than they had in prior years. This effort was not appreciated by all viewers, unfortunately; those who had previously viewed subtitled ''Galaxy Force'' episodes online objected to the English dub taking greater liberties and occasionally altering aspects of the series, and were not shy about letting people know it. <ref>http://shortpacked.com/comic/book-3-is-totally-gay/05-iacon-one-sketches/screwball/</ref>

Like ''[[Energon (cartoon)|Energon]]'' before it, ''Cybertron'' was animated using shaded [[Computer-generated imagery|CGI]] for the Transformers characters, and cel animation for most everything else. Though [[GONZO]]'s ''Cybertron'' work was more advanced than that of [[Actas Inc.]] and [[Studio A-CAT]]'s work in ''Energon'', the CGI still suffers from most of the problems of its predecessor, including a restricted range of motion, a tendency for the Transformers to stand around like statues, and crude walk cycles. Few facial expressions exist beyond "mouth open" and "mouth closed" (though to the animators' credit, there is an occasional smirk, smile, growl, etc. And Optimus Prime at one point manages to look furious ''with his mouthplate up''.) The shading techniques used on the Transformer characters also means they look very strange alongside their traditionally-animated human cohorts.

There is a sense that ''Cybertron'' actively attempts to avoid the main problem that plagued ''Energon''—that is to say, running out of plot. Consequently, while the basic plot of ''Cybertron'' is far more focused and coherent than that of ''Energon'', its first half is quite ponderous and drawn out, ''especially'' in the case of the [[Velocitron]] story arc, in which ''thirteen solid episodes'' are taken up by race after generic race, doing ''very'' little to advance the plot. Conversely, then, in the final quarter of the series, the stories of [[Gigantion]] and [[Planet X (Cybertron)|Planet X]] seem ''very'' truncated, as if the drawn-out first half left no room to see these plots through to their fullest extent.

In addition, ''Cybertron'' delights in the use of [[Stock footage|stock transformation sequences]], using them to pad out episodes like the cinematic equivalent of Styrofoam packing peanuts.

==Continuity==
As noted above, the Japanese version (''Galaxy Force'') originally treated the story as a stand-alone, unconnected to any previous story. The American version draws connections to the ''Armada'' and ''Energon'' cartoons, but various incongruities still exist:

* In general, nobody really seems to remember the events of ''Energon''. The Autobots act as though they've never been to [[Earth]] before and have no familiarity with its culture, despite having spent ten years there in places like [[Ocean City]].
* The Autobots are utterly dependent on the three human kids to help them blend into human society, when they previously had numerous human allies including Dr. Jones and his family, Rad, Alexis & Carlos, and the innumerable human inhabitants of Ocean City and the other Cybertron settlements on Earth.
* Likewise, despite the Autobots' presence being fairly common knowledge in ''Energon'', it is considered urgent to hide the Autobots from Earth's population in ''Cybertron''.
* The Energon cities themselves are never seen or mentioned.
* [[Jetfire (Armada)|Jetfire]] and [[Landmine (Energon)|Landmine]] both have distinctively different voices than in the previous cartoons. [[Red Alert (Armada)|Red Alert]] has essentially the same voice, but with a newly added accent. Also, Red Alert seems to have a bit more emotion and acts less mechanical as he did in Armada.
* Formerly prominent characters like [[Rodimus (Energon)|Rodimus]], [[Ironhide (Energon)|Ironhide]], the [[Omnicon|Omnicons]], and Kicker have vanished without a word; new characters [[Overhaul (Cybertron)|Overhaul]] and [[Scattorshot (Cybertron)|Scattorshot]] appear out of nowhere; and Red Alert returns after being absent for all of ''Energon''.
* Returning characters are ''all'' in brand-new bodies with no explanation.
* When he first combines with [[Overhaul (Cybertron)|Leobreaker]], Optimus Prime declares that he's never heard of two Autobots combining into one before. This is a rather odd statement, considering that such combinations were commonplace during ''Energon'', and Optimus himself had been combining with other Autobots since ''Armada''.
** And a later episode hints that he combined with Wing Saber into Sonic Wing Mode before then, making this statement even more dubious, unless it's something Prime deliberately forced to the depths of his memory
*** However, it is entirely possible that Optimus, though rather awkwardly so, referred to the ''manner'' in which the combination with Leobreaker occured, namely that the other Transformer formed a replacement limb for the chassis of the main robot, instead of being extra armour or combining into a bigger robot. This form of combination hadn't yet occured within the Unicron Trilogy. Suddenly finding yourself with an enlarged right arm formed by your fellow robot might explain Prime's ...well, brainfart.
* Nobody seems surprised that Megatron and Starscream are alive and well again.
* The grand black hole is explained as a by-product of "Unicron's destruction". In ''Energon'', that event happened in [[Alpha Q's universe|Alpha Q's alternate universe]], a fact that's not mentioned in the show. Likewise, Cybertron was last seen in that same alternate universe. It's not much of a stretch to assume the Autobots moved it back where it came from, but in that case, why is it so close to the black hole?
* The collapse of the Energon sun would mean that everything the Autobots fought for during ''Energon'' was in vain, and Alpha Q's worlds would die again, left in darkness without a sun and consumed by the black hole. Nobody seems to notice this little setback. To the contrary, Red Alert's report mentions an uninhabited planet that's ''not'' one of Alpha Q's planets as the black hole's first victim.

Within the show, most of these problems were never directly addressed; the cartoon simply went about telling its story without much regard to previous events. Indeed, vanishing characters and new bodies had previously occurred in the changeover between ''Armada'' and ''Energon'' with equally little attention, though the second show at least established the existence of a ten-year fictional gap between them, making it ''somewhat'' less intrusive (such a gap also exists between ''Energon'' and ''Cybertron'', but it was never noted in dialogue in the series).

However, external material has addressed some of the problems. The [[Hasbro Transformers Collectors' Club (magazine)|''Cybertron'' comic]] storyline [[Balancing Act (issue)|Balancing Act]], for example, [[Vector Prime|Vector Prime]] claims that the Autobots are suffering memory problems, caused by temporal disturbances from the [[Unicron Singularity|Unicron Singularity]]. Jetfire's new accent was explained on the Hasbro web site as a result of time spent on the planet [[Nebulos|Nebulon]].

===Energon comic===
Some fans believe that the cartoon follows the unfinished [[Energon (comic)|''Energon'' comic book series]] from [[Dreamwave Productions|Dreamwave]]. Unsubstantiated rumors to this effect have swirled since the cartoon's debut, though the only "evidence" comes from media outside the cartoon:

* The [[Hasbro Transformers Collectors' Club (magazine)|''Cybertron'' comic]] storyline "[[Balancing Act (issue)|Balancing Act]]", written by Hasbro copywriter [[Forest Lee|Forest Lee]], is set the same universe as the ''Cybertron'' cartoon series. But the story references events from the ''Energon'' comic, such as the [[Mini-Con|Mini-Con]] [[Over-Run (Armada)|Over-Run]] hooking himself into the Planetary Database — a plot point begun by the [[Energon (comic)|''Energon'' comic]], which would have been carried through if the book hadn't been canceled.

* The bio of the ''Cybertron'' toy [[Scorponok (Energon)|Dark Scorponok]] references his death at the hands of Megatron, as happened in the ''Energon'' comic but not the cartoon. However, this was overwritten when "Balancing Act" depicted Dark Scorponok as being pulled into the cartoon timeline from ''another'' universe.

The idea doesn't solve any problems; most of the contradictions between the ''Energon'' and ''Cybertron'' cartoons also exist between the ''Energon'' comic and the ''Cybertron'' cartoon. The cartoon contains no references to any events of the ''Energon'' comic.

The entire notion of a network television cartoon following up on a comparatively obscure, unfinished comic book seems counter-intuitive; furthermore, Hasbro material has presented many explanations for contradictions between the two cartoons. Why bother explaining why ''Cybertron'' Jetfire sounds different if he's not the same guy seen in ''Energon''? Why have Vector Prime explain the differences between the two cartoons if they're not in the same continuity? It would have been simpler to retract the statement that Cybertron was a sequel series.

When [[Megatron (Armada)|Megatron]] destroyed Superion Maximus's dormant brother, he unlocked the living seal on the Super Energon pool deep within [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] and awakened the remaining Combiners. While Superion Maximus was aghast at his brother's destruction, the Decepticon combiners were merely curious about who had managed to reactivate them. Megatron declared that the Super Energon was his, and that he was the master of all Decepticons. {{storylink|Ambition}}

Constructicon Maximus stated they had been waiting for the day a strong ruler would come and claim the Super Energon. Although he hesitated when the newly-transformed Galvatron ordered him to hunt down his fellow guardian, Superion Maximus, he did so only for a moment. He offered Superion another chance to join them alongside Galvatron, but finally accepted him as an enemy when he refused. Superion confronted the two Decepticons, reminding them that they'd protected the Super Energon together for millions of years, and asking them why they let ''one'' Transformer have control of it all. The two merely replied that Galvatron was now their master, and that he represented the future of Cybertron. {{storylink|Wishes}} Later, the two combiners flew into space with the Decepticons to battle Superion Maximus and his new Autobot comrades. Constructicon Maximus was eager to double-team his old friend again, but [[Omega Supreme (Energon)|Omega Supreme]] entered the fight to battle Bruticus Maximus, evening the score. {{storylink|Galvatron!}}

When [[Six Shot]] pinpointed an Autobot signal on the planet's surface, Galvatron sent Constructicon Maximus and Bruticus Maximus out to investigate. Demonstrating the ability to teleport, they arrived at the crashsite of the ''[[Miranda II]]'' and drew out the Autobots who were in hiding. Constructicon Maximus was in the middle of menacing a generic in his [[Wideload (Energon)|Wideload]] crane mode when [[Kicker Jones|Kicker]] and [[Arcee (Energon)|Arcee]] arrived. They knocked the combiner over completely and used him as a ramp. Enraged, Constructicon Maximus followed the Earth punk, but he and the Decepticons ultimately failed to keep Kicker from opening a hole in the energon cloud around the planet, letting Optimus Prime return to Cybertron. Constructicon and Bruticus were given a ''virtual'' chance to even the score against Superion in an Autobot training simulation. They triumphed over Superion Maximus two-against-one, but were pounded into the mat by their next opponent, Optimus Supreme. {{storylink|Distribution}}

Superion launched all of his limbs at Constructicon Maximus, pinning him against a wall, as Superion's central component [[Storm Jet (Energon)|Storm Jet]] crushed the Decepticon combiner's spark, killing him.

Before the dawn of time, Order and Chaos existed within an extradimensional entity known as [[The One]]. To explore the fledgling universe, he created the astral being known as [[Unicron]], and then subdivided him, creating his twin, Primus. Both brothers were [[Multiversal singularity|multiversal singularities]], unique in all realities, but whereas Unicron could only exist in one dimension at a time, moving between them at will, Primus existed simultaneously in all realities at once. It is suggested, in fact, that the two brothers embody the basic concepts of reality—good and evil, order and chaos—and that their continued existence is necessary for the stability of the multiverse.

As Unicron and Primus went about their appointed task, venturing through the cosmos, it became apparent to Primus that Unicron was a corrupt being, and he took it upon himself to stop the threat posed to all of existence by his sibling. In combat, Primus was no match for Unicron. In cunning, however, he proved himself to his brother's superior when he shifted their battle to the astral plane, and then back to the physical world once more, only to have both their essences manifest within metallic planetoids, leaving them both trapped. It was with this act of sacrifice that Primus hoped to contain Unicron's evil forever. Unfortunately for him, over time, Unicron learned to psionically shape his prison into a giant metallic planet, and Primus followed suit, becoming the mechanical world of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]. When Unicron then learned to transform his planetary form even further, into a gigantic robot form, Primus adapted the idea to suit his own ends—rather than transforming his own body, he would create small beings that would be able to change their shape, like Unicron. After performing a "test run" on the moon of [[Protos]], where he successfully created [[Covenant|twelve transforming robotic beings]], {{storylink|Herald, Covenant, Schism, Paradox|Covenant}} he birthed from his own body a group of thirteen robots that possessed the ability to change shape, like Unicron. The Thirteen were Primus's soldiers in his war with Unicron, which came to its seeming end during a climactic battle in which one of the Thirteen, who would forever afterwards be known as the [[The Fallen|Fallen]], betrayed Primus and became an acolyte of Unicron. The battle ended when the Fallen and Unicron were sucked into a black hole and disappeared from reality. With Unicron gone for now, Primus entered an eons-long slumber, his self-imposed sleep preventing Unicron from detecting him through the mental link the brothers shared. Unicron dispatched a group of [[Hook, Line, and Sinker|heralds]] to attack Cybertron and pave the way for his coming, including a [[Galvatron II|Galvatron]] plucked from an [[Rhythms of Darkness!|alternate future]]. Galvatron, however, was not content to serve under Unicron, and instead captured Autobot leader [[Emirate Xaaron]], forcing him to fully awaken Primus, who possessed Xaaron's body and summoned Transformers from all across the universe back to Cybertron. {{storylink|Out of Time!}} Here, Primus spoke through Xaaron, telling the Transformers of his history with Unicron. Additionally, Primus chose Optimus Prime to lead both factions, united, against the Chaos Bringer. When Optimus Prime learned of Primus' ruse, his suspicions regarding his Creator's motives began to grow. Though their battle against the Unicron cultists did temporarily unite both factions, this facade shattered once the Planet-Eater arrived. Sheer terror prevented them from carrying out his desire, and the Transformers fled despite Primus' pleas. Primus instead made a stand himself, attempting to dupe Unicron into believing he still retained his full power, but Unicron saw through the deception, and destroyed Xaaron's body. Optimus Prime came to a realization, following Primus' destruction and his retrieval of the lost and contaminated Creation Matrix, that Primus did not mean only for the Transformers to fight his battles for him, but to carry on after he was gone. Flying into space with the Matrix, Prime unleashed the full measure of Primus's power, destroying Unicron. {{storylink|On the Edge of Extinction!}}

Though the Transformers were technically victorious, this victory came with a price. With Primus dead, and with the grievous wounds inflicted on Cybertron itself, the planet threatened to come apart. Later in his life, the Oracle also reached through time when he discovered that the evil [[Sparkbot]]s were attempted to recreate Unicron following the planet-eater's destruction in the year 2005. By this stage calling himself "Primus", the Oracle attempted to stop the villains and their unwitting pawns, the human [[Kiss Players (singing group)|Kiss Players]], appearing as a giant golden hand to snatch away the fragments of Unicron's lifeforce each time the Kiss Players recovered them. {{storylink|Kiss Players (radio drama)|Kiss Players radio drama #45-46}} Unfortunately, this merely led the Kiss Players to pursue him through the timestream and resulted in them crashing into the "[[Wall of Time]]" and becoming scattered throughout the multiverse. {{storylink|Kiss Players (radio drama)|Kiss Players radio drama #47}} Knowing that the Kiss Players were innocent in this whole affair, having been duped by the Sparkbots, the benevolent Primus rescued them from the different regions of time and space they had wound up in, and properly introduced himself, explaining the Sparkbots' treachery. He then took them back in time to prehistoric Earth, arriving just in time to witness the Sparkbots' successful restoration of Unicron to life. Primus transformed once more and unleashed the power of his mobile cannon platform, destroying Unicron's energy and sealing it and the Sparkbots deep within the planet. To ensure that Unicron would never be freed again, he created a mighty guardian, [[Fortress Maximus (RID)|Fortress Maximus]], who would watch over it and the Earth. With the battle over, Shaoshao asked about the Kiss Players' future, but Primus did not reply. Dispatched to an ice world in the far reaches of the galaxy by the orders of the [[Oracle (BM)|Oracle]], [[Primal Prime]]'s [[Wrecker]]s encountered the exiled [[Quintesson]] known as [[Al-Badur]], who revealed to them the full extent of his race's connection to Cybertron and Primus. Al-Badur explained that, millions of years ago, the Quintessons sought to exploit the power of Primus for profit, and to that end, invaded Cybertron and set up numerous barriers to separate Primus from the Transformers. Their first attempt, the [[Plasma energy|Plasma Energy Chamber]], met with failure; next, the Quintessons targeted Vector Sigma itself, surrounding it with a shell program that acted as a barrier between the Transformers and the power and guidance of Primus. {{storylink|Disclosure}} Realizing that the Oracle itself was the Quintessons' shell program, Primal Prime began to fear that all that had come about as a result of its guidance—including [[Optimus Primal]]'s mission to restore a techno-organic balance to Cybertron—was all part of a Quintesson plot, but [[Alpha Trion (G1)|Alpha Trion]] assured him that Primus worked in mysterious ways.

The Wreckers soon returned to Cybertron, discovering that in their absence, Optimus Primal had achieved his goal of recreating the planet as a technorganic world. In the wake of this overwhelming transformation, the Quintessons had invaded the planet, but they were not the only threat to Cybertron's safety: The Wreckers were also faced with [[Cryotek (RID)|Cryotek]], who had used the legendary [[Divine Light]] to tap into the power of Primus and transform himself into a living god. During the course of the battle that ensued, Primal Prime and [[Apelinq]] were struck by a blast of Primus's power by Cryotek, which wound up merging them into [[Sentinel Maximus]]. Although unable to drain Primus's power any further, Cryotek was sustained in the void by the power he had absorbed, and he was ready to carry on the battle until Primus himself—now unshackled thanks to the destruction of the Oracle in the final stages of Optimus Primal's quest—took an active hand, spiriting Sentinel Maximus away to partake in [[Balancing Act|another battle]] elsewhere in the multiverse.

While all of this was happening on Cybertron, elsewhere in the universe, on [[New Quintessa]], Primus briefly possessed the body of [[Icebird]] so that he could address the Quintesson leader [[Judge Heirodyus]]. In the Unicron Trilogy universe, Primus was introduced as the living energy core of Cybertron, as well as the originator of the precious and ancient fuel, [[Energon (Energon)|energon]]. Transformers of this universe believed the stories of Unicron, Primus, and [[Omega Supreme (Energon)|Omega Supreme]] to be only myth and legend until the existence of Unicron was revealed in "[[the Unicron Battles]]" of 2010. With Cybertron left in a disastrous state after the chaos-bringer's attack, large amounts of energon were required to repair the planet, and to search for and acquire the mineral, the united Autobot-Decepticon forces entered into an alliance with the [[Earth Federation]] government.

Primus entered into the equation when the project's head scientist, [[Brian Jones (Energon)|Dr. Brian Jones]], brought his son, [[Kicker Jones|Kicker]], to Cybertron. Terrified of the giant robots surrounding him, Kicker fled, only to find himself tumbling through tunnels into a hidden chamber deep beneath Cybertron's surface. Primus awoke and saved Kicker from what would have been a fatal fall, and for his own reasons, imbued the child with a special gift—the ability to detect energon throughout the [[universe (universe)|universe]]. [[Optimus Prime (Armada)|Optimus Prime]] subsequently discovered Kicker in Primus's chamber, and the god chose to work with the Transformers quite directly, imbuing them with the [[Spark of Combination]], which would allow the Autobots to [[Powerlinx]] and increase their powers. Primus went on to advise Optimus Prime on his actions in order to prepare for the future, including the [[Terrorcon (Energon)|Terrorcon]] invasion, the return of [[Megatron (Armada)|Megatron]], and the next battle with Unicron; although vague at times, he would offer just enough information to allow his children to survive the threats they faced. Primus was often very weak due to the damage done to the planet's surface, and spent most of his time in a mode of stasis to preserve his energy and keep Cybertron's energy grid online.

When Megatron succeeded in reanimating Unicron, most of the Autobot army was critically wounded in the ensuing battle. Primus's plan to contain Unicron's essence in the center of the sun failed when the star collapsed into a massive [[Unicron Singularity|black hole]] which threatened not only Cybertron and the universe, but the entire multiverse itself. His energy drained to the point that he had once again been rendered dormant, Primus could now only be awakened and restored to full power by the four ancient [[Cyber Planet Key]]s, lost to the far reaches of the galaxy in a failed [[space bridge]] experiment eons ago. The magnitude of the threat posed to the multiverse was enough to summon [[Vector Prime]]—one of the original thirteen Transformers, who had been following Unicron through the multiverse and repairing the damage he had done—back to Cybertron to aid the Autobots in the quest for the keys.

After a while, the the Autobots were able to find the focusing device, the [[Omega Lock]], and the keys from [[Velocitron]] and [[Jungle Planet (Cybertron)|Jungle Planet]]. Bringing all three together caused the group to be drawn into the consciousness of Primus, who spoke through the three Mini-Cons and told his children to "maintain the balance". {{storylink|Trap}}

Eventually, despite continued attempts by both Megatron and [[Starscream (Armada)|Starscream]] to steal the power of the Cyber Planet Keys, the Autobots were able to gather the keys from [[Velocitron]], the [[Jungle Planet (Cybertron)|Jungle Planet]] and [[Earth]], and brought them and their focusing device, the [[Omega Lock]], back to Cybertron. Coupling these three keys with the power of the Matrix, Optimus Prime was able to initiate Primus's transformation from planet mode to robot mode. Communicating with the Autobots through the [[Mini-Con]], [[Jolt (Cybertron)|Jolt]], Primus explained that the destruction of Unicron, the embodiment of the force of evil, had unbalanced the universe, and that only he could seal the black hole and restore order—but to do that, the fourth Cyber Planet Key, from [[Gigantion]], the Giant Planet, was required to reconnect Primus's spark with his body and restore his full power. {{storylink|Cybertron (episode)|Cybertron}}

While the Autobots were occupied with the quest for the Cyber Planet Keys, Unicron's heralds [[Ramjet (Universe)|Ramjet]] and [[Nemesis Prime (Universe 2003)|Nemesis Prime]] arrived on Cybertron, intent on unleashing the [[Dead Matrix]]—as the Matrix was the antithesis of Unicron, so too would the Dead Matrix ensure the destruction of Primus, thereby totally destabilizing the multiverse and reducing it to a sea of entropic chaos. For the first time, it would be possible for Unicron to strike at Primus in all realities simultaneously, ending their cosmic feud once and for all. Ramjet and Nemesis Prime were ultimately stopped by Vector Prime and allies [[Sentinel Maximus]] and [[Omega Prime]], plucked from the midst of the ''Universe'' conflict by the multiverse-warping energies of the black hole.

The Dead Matrix, however, was cast into the heart of the black hole by Unicron's servant [[Soundwave (Cybertron)|Soundwave]], freeing Unicron's spark and allowing it to adopt a new, diminutive physical form. Unicron participated in the escalating Mini-Con civil war on Cybertron's moons, but when the planet transformed into Primus's robot mode, Unicron fled. == Retconning the retcon? ==

It's no secret that, after the Unicron Trilogy, ''Universe'' and the Unicron-heavy [[Dreamwave Productions]] comic books, the [[fandom]] at large was generally quite sick of stories revolving around Unicron and Primus. It is likely no coincidence, then, that the major new universes which have been created in western media since then—those of the [[IDW Publishing]] comic books, the [[live-action film series|live-action movie]] and the ''[[Transformers Animated (cartoon)|Transformers Animated]]'' cartoon—have all eschewed use of the Primus creation myth. But what does this mean for the status of the retcon that states Primus exists in all universes?

The world of the live-action movie is a fairly cut-and-dried case. At first, the movie itself, and the comic books set in its continuity published by IDW, present the Transformers as creations of the enigmatic [[AllSpark (Movie)|All Spark]], with no explicit connection drawn between it and Primus. However, Takara's [[World of Transformers]] website even lists the All Spark as a [[sacred implement]] alongside other Primus-related talismans such as the Matrix and Vector Sigma. The UK's Furman-scripted ''[[Transformers (Titan Magazine)|Transformers]]'' magazine had introduced Unicron in [[Transformers Comic issue 18|its eighteenth issue]] and later [[Transformers Comic issue 20|had the Transformers voyage into Cybertron's depths]]. While Primus was never mentioned in the course of the story, it was shown Cybertron's bowels had what seemed like huge versions of their own interior workings—a clear reference to Cybertron being the transforming body of Primus. Where Furman was going with that is unknown, as it was never followed up. Titan then confused everyone by saying ''legend'' has it that Primus created the first Seven Transformers; and then finally Primus was referred to by name by [[The Fallen]] in IDW's ''Tales of the Fallen'', confirming he exists in at least the comic back-story variations of the movie continuity.

The IDW and ''Animated'' universes are not so clear on the matter. Writer [[Simon Furman]] has outright said that the IDW universe will have "no Primus. No Unicron". In accordance with this, the Furman-penned ''[[Stormbringer (comics)|Stormbringer]]'', rather than have Transformers swear by Primus, instead had them swear by [[Primacron]], but a monkeywrench was thrown into the works when Primus's name was heard being taken in vain in [[Eric Holmes]]'s [[Megatron Origin issue 4|''Megatron Origin'' #4]]. Furman attempted to justify this on his blog by claiming that this was not ''the'' Primus, but simply "something or someone" called Primus that had existed some point. Much like the movieverse, the world of ''Transformers Animated'' also depicts the source of Transformer life as a mysterious talisman known as the [[AllSpark (Animated)|AllSpark]]. The show's creative team have stated that they do not plan to give an in-story explanation for the origins of the AllSpark, for [[AllSpark (Animated)#Notes|various reasons]]. Series art director [[Derrick J. Wyatt]], meanwhile, has stated more than once his opinion that Primus does not exist in the ''Animated'' universe [http://twitter.com/DerrickJWyatt/status/1759990650] but then we're into the realm of [[authorial intent]].

Ultimately, there is ''very'' little to say that Primus does not exist in the IDW or ''Animated'' universe, besides the fact that creators involved with those universes do not want to include the character in their stories. After all, just because Primus doesn't ''appear'', or characters are unaware of him, it doesn't mean he doesn't ''exist''. It wouldn't be the only time this has happened: the occupants of the parallel ''[[Shattered Glass]]'' universe were largely ignorant of Primus until a [[Cliffjumper (G1)|Cliffjumper from another universe]] mentioned him. It seems quite safe to conclude that, as of this moment, the retcon has not yet itself been retconned... and we kinda hope it isn't, because then some poor sod is going to have rewrite this article from the ground up.

Megatron arrived on Earth in search of Fortress Maximus, with a cover story of plundering Earth's energy. His first appearance was at the International Scientific Symposium in [[New York]], during which he and the Predacon trio fought [[Optimus Prime (RID)|Optimus Prime]] and the [[Autobot Brothers]]. Although the battle did not go well, Megatron was able to abduct [[Kenneth Onishi|Doctor Kenneth Onishi]], an energy expert and archaeologist. {{storylink|Battle Protocol!}} Doctor Onishi was subjected to the [[psycho-probe]] which proved slow work in extracting information. In the meantime, Megatron sent his minions out to steal energy to refuel the ''Megastar'', only occasionally venturing out to help them.

After several more failed missions, the interrogation of Dr Onishi finally saw results in the discovery of a crashed Autobot spaceship in America. Megatron was able to snatch six protoforms from the ship and take them to the nearby McKinley Army Base where he imbued them with energy from his spark and gave them new forms as Decepticons. {{storylink|The Decepticons}} Eager to test his new troops, he sent them to destroy Sherman Dam and hacked into the primitive human television transmissions in order to extort the humans in the nearby city of [[Los Bogus]] into surrendering. Megatron largely stayed back at base after these incidents, until the Commandos were able to sabotage the Autobot [[Global Space Bridge]]. With the Autobots unable to reach specific destinations, Megatron and Scourge attacked an energy facility near the North Pole. The Decepticons subsequently tracked the Autobots to the Sahara Desert, and Megatron led the mission there himself. Megatron attempted to take the Orb, but was caught in a booby trap which seized him in a powerful energy field. Soon he and Optimus were locked in combat, resulting in Megatron disappearing in the collapsing cavern. In the aftermath, the three beast Predacons pulled themselves out of the rubble, only to have their energy drained. Scourge's second attempt to control Maximus failed as well, leading the Decepticons to try and capture [[Koji Onishi]], the Autobots' pet human. Instead they got hold of Koji's friend [[Karl]], but Galvatron accompanied Scourge and Sky-Byte to Maximus's location. Once Karl had taken control of the titan, Scourge turned on his master, ordering Karl to destroy Galvatron. With the attempt a failure, Galvatron stunned his minion and retreated. {{storylink|Mistaken Identity}}

Galvatron used one of his new abilities to seize the traitorous Decepticons in an energy field and forcibly reprogram them to serve him. Placing them under the command of Sky-Byte, he then sent them to attack the Autobot base. Although the Decepticons and Predacons were led into a trap by the Autobots, Galvatron brought the ''Megastar'' to the battle, growing in size to join with the battle station as its right hand. After Fortress Maximus destroyed the battle station, Galvatron fell, apparently lifeless, to the ground. {{storylink|Surprise Attack!}} Not finished yet, Galvatron used his new vampiric powers to drain energy from Maximus. When confronted by Omega Prime, Galvatron demonstrated another new ability, releasing from his mouth thousands of [[Cyber-bat|cyber-bats]] which took control of Earth's children.
