Synopsis
While on a deep-space mission to test a new heat-and-radiation-resistant alloy that they have developed, scientists Jessica Morgan and Gregory Swofford detect a ship carrying Optimus Prime's body (see "Dark Awakening") on a collision course with a planetoid orbiting a star they are researching nearby. Despite Gregory's reservations (his face was scarred in a previous scuffle between Optimus and Megatron, which he blames on Optimus), he is talked into helping Jessica rescue Prime's body before the ship collides with the planetoid, the impact of which also sets off the star into a supernova and coating their ship with unusual spores.

Upon return to Earth, Jessica's father studies the spores and learns that they are not only alive, but are an incredibly contagious viral agent that induces hatred and destructive urges into whoever they contaminate. After a new scuffle between the Technobots and Terrorcons over the new alloy gravely injures Jessica, her father is convinced by Gregory to try and resurrect Prime's body as a carrier of the spores against the Autobots, a sentiment exacerbated when it's learned Jessica was paralyzed from the waist down in the accident and now needs a special exosuit to walk. However, when reviving Prime's body turns out to be impossible for them, Gregory and Jessica's father decide to use it as bait for the other Autobots. Dr. Morgan forces Jessica to lure them into a spore trap at the lab.

The trap goes off without a hitch, mostly due to Rodimus' reckless haste in recovering his predecessor's corpse in lieu of caution, and several Autobots—including Superion and Defensor, two of the most powerful Autobot gestalts—are infected. The Decepticons have learned about Optimus Prime's recovery as well, and have shown up to terminate the former Autobot leader permanently, but are instead infected themselves. Fortunately, Rodimus, Jessica, and Galvatron manage to escape unharmed, the former two with Optimus' body; a few other Autobots manage to escape infection as well, but are badly wounded while attempting to subdue a sickened and crazed Superion.

Back at Autobot City, Rodimus pleads to Wreck-Gar to try and repair Prime, but Prime is too far gone even for Junkion medical experience. Desperate, Rodimus contacts Sky Lynx and orders him to locate and bring back a Quintesson, remembering that they had once before restored Optimus to life. He then sets about disconnecting Metroplex to keep the city-former from becoming infected. However, just as he finishes the final steps to do so, an infected Ultra Magnus appears. He gives chase to Rodimus before he's temporarily subdued by Wreck-Gar...who ends up becoming infected, and infecting Rodimus in return.

With the Hate Plague, as it's now called, rampaging even to the ends of the galaxy, Sky Lynx finds an uninfected Quintesson who he saves from infected Sharkticons in exchange for reviving Optimus. The Quintesson warns that—should anything go too awry during the process — there's a good chance that Optimus will never live again. It's touch-and-go for a while, but eventually, the Quintesson manages to pull through and Optimus is restored to full life, declaring that "no force in the Universe can stop me."

Notes
Animation and/or technical glitches
*When Rodimus is done talking to Optimus's statue, his head slides backwards. Twice.
*When Gregory and Jessica's father rush at the hospital and find the Autobots, Swindle is amongst them.
*When Defensor is shown after the Protectobots combine his left arm is missing.
*When Soundwave looks down after having Ratbat inserted into him, his faceplate stays in its old position of looking upwards.
*When Ratbat is inserted into Soundwave, he is white instead of a purplish-magenta colour.
*Also pertaining to Soundwave, when he says "Ratbat has returned. Ratbat, report!", his vocoded voice sounds more high pitched than usual.
*In one scene, Bruticus is the same size as all the regular Decepticons, or the regular Decepticons are the same size as Bruticus.
* Before entering the lab to retrieve Prime's body, Rodimus gives orders to Defensor...though Defensor is shown as the one making all of those orders.
*In the same scene as above, Goldbug is somehow right in front of Defensor, but Bumblebee wasn't rebuilt into him yet.
*Quite often the red halos around infected Transformers are out of step with the animation, or visible through objects in front of them.
*When Wreck-Gar is about to infect Rodimus, Rodimus is all red before he's been infected.

Continuity errors
*More or less this entire episode is a massive continuity error, as it purports to pick up at the end of Optimus Prime's last prior appearance in "Dark Awakening", yet actually presents entirely different conditions. In the prior episode, Optimus Prime lost an arm and half of his face (on top of his longstanding physical damage still left from the animated movie), but was still alive as he managed to steer his ship at high speed through the heavy fire of a massed Quintesson spacefleet, deliberately ramming a detonator that caused a binary supernova and obliterated the ship and the entire solar system around it. Yet in this new episode, Optimus Prime is shown completely intact and pristine, albeit dead, as his (completely different) ship drifts, slowly and alone, through a system in which the sun is about to go nova from natural causes.
*Jessica Morgan and Gregory Swofford detect life-signs aboard Optimus Prime's ship, but the Autobot is dead.

Real-world references
*Wreck-Gar's lines: "I'm a doctor, not a forklift!" and "He's dead, Jim." Reference popular quotes from Star Trek medic Dr. Leonard H. McCoy.
*Similarly "His engines, they cannot take the strain!" comes from another Star Trek character, namely Montgomery Scott (AKA Scotty), though this is often claimed to not be attributed to the character except for its use in parodies.
*Wreck-Gar's comment: "I'm a pepper! Wouldn't you like to be a pepper, too?" is a reference to an old Dr. Pepper ad campaign in the late '70s to early '80s.

Trivia
* The Hate Plague appears to affect Sharkticons differently from how it affects Transformers and humans. While other organisms become incredibly aggressive, Sharkticons seem to become obsessed with infecting everyone else.
*When Jessica Morgan asks who built Optimus Prime in the first place, Rodimus Prime responds by saying the Quintessons did so, yet Optimus was modified from Orion Pax who was repaired by Alpha Trion, though he might have meant who built him in his original form.
*Jessica Morgan and Gregory Swofford are able to lift, push and pull Optimus Prime's massive body out of his chair and onto their ship without any mechanical assistance or devices except a rope. Seriously?
*The Hate Plague can apparently infect any creature, both purely mechanical and biological.
*Even though it occurs in a flashback, this is technically the last appearance of Megatron in the original American series.
The Decepticons have survived their burial and have blasted their way out. With their Energon haul unscathed, the Decepticons take to the air.

Ironhide is tired of this string of defeats, and he soon takes to the air to follow. Bluestreak takes off to try to rein him in. Ironhide takes a few pot-shots at the fleeing Decepticons, and Skywarp breaks formation to teleport behind their pursuers. He lands a rocket square in Ironhide's back, knocking the old Autobot out of the chase. Ironhide crashes into a lake, and the Autobots catch up with him to pull him out of the water and into Ratchet's waiting repair bay. The Autobots return to base.

Back at the Autobot base, Hound taunts the captive Ravage and discusses the Decepticon spy's apparent abandonment by his comrades. In using a hologram of Megatron to goad Ravage, Hound and Mirage brainstorm an idea: to use an enormous hologram to trick the Decepticons into a trap. He pitches the idea to Optimus Prime, and the Autobot leader agrees.

Soon after, Hound talks to Mirage about a report from Teletraan-1 of a secret supply of rocket fuel. He says all this quite within earshot of Ravage, explaining how there's enough fuel there to make "four trips back to Cybertron." As Mirage and Hound walk away, Hound "accidentally" drops the key to Ravage's cage. The Decepticon retrieves it and escapes captivity.

Back at the Decepticon camp, Ravage reports in to Megatron about the rocket base. Megatron is delighted; it's the last energy source they'll need before they can return to Cybertron. As Megatron gloats, Starscream grouses about the need for a change in leadership. In a foolish move, Starscream tries to blast Megatron in the back. Soundwave warns his leader, who deflects the blast with a built-in energy shield. Starscream has spent all his ammunition in this single shot, and he is left defenseless. Megatron returns the sentiment by blasting Starscream in the arm, knocking his disloyal lieutenant to the ground. Groveling, Starscream huddles to Megatron's feet, who answers his pleas only by issuing the command: "We attack the rocket base at sunrise!"

In a flat stretch of desert, Hound creates the rocket base hologram. The Decepticons move into position, and Megatron orders them to attack.

The Autobots spring their trap, running out from hiding to ambush the attacking Decepticons. However, when they engage in hand-to-hand combat, the Decepticons break apart like poorly made machines. Optimus Prime realizes they've been had. These aren't the Decepticons, but are instead decoys. Megatron, the only real Decepticon present, laughs at Prime's misstep. He saw through the phony release of Ravage. Megatron reveals to his defeated enemy that the real Decepticon army has been attacking the real rocket base.

Cut to Cape Carlson, the real rocket base, where the Decepticon jets arrive. They transform and neutralize the human army's attempt to stop them. In short time, Megatron rejoins them, and they soon return to their launch base with all the fuel they need. Soundwave reports the space cruiser's readiness, and Megatron orders the Decepticons to prepare to blast off.

Back at the Autobot ship, Optimus Prime briefs his soldiers on the grim situation. He tells them that Megatron is on the verge of returning to Cybertron, where he could become unstoppable with the energon he has tapped from Earth. The Autobots have no choice but to directly attack the Decepticons. Prime asks for volunteers, and all the Autobots—and their human allies Spike and Sparkplug—step forward. The Autobots transform into vehicle mode and roll out.

As the Decepticons begin to board the cruiser, the Autobots encircle the base. Prime's forces transform into robot form and begin the attack. The Autobots grapple with the Decepticons, but the battle is brief. Megatron and his forces get aboard their ship and blast off into the sky.

Optimus Prime refuses to concede defeat. He orders Sideswipe to hand over his rocket pack. Donning the pack, Prime takes off to personally pursue the Decepticon cruiser. Starscream spots Prime in pursuit. The cruiser opens fire, blasting Prime who falls out of the sky and hits the ground hard.

The Autobots gather to see if Prime is okay, and the tough Autobot shrugs off their help. It's then that he notices that Mirage is missing from their ranks.

Aboard the cruiser, Starscream makes his move to usurp Megatron. Waiting for the Decepticon leader to lower his guard and remove his arm-cannon, Starscream raises his weapon to Megatron. Just then, Mirage drops his invisibility power to fire a few shots in the cruiser's controls. Starscream turns to blast Mirage, and Megatron takes advantage of the distraction to retrieve his cannon and fire on Starscream. Chaos erupts aboard the cruiser as Mirage's sabotage begins spreading and Soundwave loses control of the ship.

Mirage scrambles to his feet and jumps from the doomed ship as it crashes into the ocean. The Autobots on the ground stare incredulously as the Decepticons are suddenly and mysteriously defeated. They then spot Mirage, the unlikely hero, floating to the ground in a parachute rig. The Autobots celebrate their victory.

Spike writes in his journal that because the Autobots stopped the Decepticons from stealing Earth's resources, the governments of the world have decided to give Optimus Prime the energy he needs to revitalize Cybertron. The Autobot ship is being refurbished, and Spike and Sparkplug eagerly await their trip to the Transformers' home world.

Meanwhile, at the bottom of the ocean, the Decepticon space cruiser rests. Bubbles emerge from a hatch that is pulled free from the inside by massive metal hands. Megatron lives.
Other notes
* There is a nice touch by the animators during the scene where the Autobots assist Optimus Prime after he rolls down the hill at the start of this episode. After Mirage, Prowl and Ratchet have pushed Optimus Prime's truck mode upright, he bounces as his suspension compensates for the weight of the truck landing on its wheels.

* After Ironhide assures that he'll be right back in action, Optimus Prime is depicted with rather exaggerated 'puffy' proportions for a brief sequence before he transforms into vehicle mode, which is similarly exaggerated with large wheels in comparison to the rest of the truck, followed by an exaggerated Ratchet in vehicle mode. Part of this animation is later reused near the end of the episode after the Decepticon space cruiser crashes, with the rest of the Autobots having similar proportions in both robot and vehicle mode.

Animation or technical glitches
* As the Autobots gather around Optimus Prime's fallen form and Mirage and Cliffjumper fly in, Cliffjumper is colored yellow like Bumblebee, who is currently buried under tons of rubble.

* Inside the mines, Soundwave is shown with a purple Autobot insignia.

* After the Decepticons fly out of the mines, Skywarp and two generic purple Decepticon jets are drawn with the silhouettes of pilots sitting inside their cockpits.

* Ironhide's back-mounted rocket launcher is shown in firing position before it emerges from his back.

* The energon cubes that Megatron holds when giving permission to Skywarp to teleport are uncolored.

*In the Japanese dub of the scene where Ironhide chases after Megatron and Skywarp, it is Thundercracker who requests permission to teleport.

* Skywarp's damaged tailfin isn't damaged when he teleports back into the scene.

* A mislayering of animation cells when Hound creates a hologram of Megatron to taunt Ravage causes it to appear as if Hound is standing in the prison cage with Ravage.

* After Ravage escapes, Hound explains to Optimus what happened, but it is Mirage's voice.

* In the reaction shot of the Autobots when Optimus Prime is pleased at Ravage's escape, the tips of Prowl's doors are colored as parts of Jazz and Mirage's heads.

* As the Decepticons move into position to attack the holographic rocket base, one shot has two Starscreams. However, given that these Decepticons are all junky decoys, this may not necessarily be an error.

* When Hound and Rumble struggle at the final battle, bubbles are rising up in the close-up of Hound. Either the animators got this confused with last episode's underwater fight, or Rumble is doing something really gross.

* In the original broadcast version of the episode—and in Rhino's DVD release—the establishing shot at the start of the third act uses a flubbed take: A major piece of artwork—the Decepticon starship blasting off into the sky—is missing, meaning the Autobots on the ground are reacting to nothing. (The completed shot does appear in the teaser for the episode at the end of Part 2, however.) Oddly enough, the bonus disc in this DVD set calls out the error in a collection of bloopers and oddities.

* This episode features a curious sound oddity as presented on the More than Meets the Eye 25th Anniversary Special Edition disc, (The disc that is a pack-in with Transformers Universe 25th Anniversary Optimus Prime.) When the edited-together film reaches the point covered by the third episode, the viewer will notice strange, random mechanical sound effects popping up that have no on-screen source. The sound effects usually appear at scene transitions, and indeed seem to be the sound effects for the Cybernet Space Cube used in the Generation 2 broadcast of this episode. Note however, that Cybernet Space Cube visual effects are not present, as the episode is presented more in terms of it's original broadcast. How and why the Cybernet Space Cube sound effects were included in this presentation of the episode, (and why the problem only afflicts the third part and not parts one and two) are currently unknown.

Continuity errors
* Mirage, Hound, Jazz and Prowl all react with shock at Optimus' statement that Ravage's escape was a good thing. Yet they were all in on the plan to let Ravage get away to tell the Decepticons about the secret hologram rocket base that is most certainly not a trap. Did they just forget?

* The Mini Vehicle Autobots are shown disguised as lab-coat-wearing scientists to complete the holographic illusion of a rocket base, though it's a pretty poor disguise when you realize these scientists are big enough to turn into trucks and cars. Also, where'd they get the lab coats? (For that matter, why not just make holographic scientists?)

* Spike can throw a rock with enough force to knock Starscream's Null Ray off his arm. To be fair, it was the arm that Megatron blasted in an earlier scene. Of course, when we next see Starscream a few seconds later, it's been magically repaired and reattached, so it all works out.

* Mirage is clearly visible (prominent, in fact) during the Autobots' final, desperate assault on the space cruiser, despite later being shown to have snuck aboard it. This is either a major continuity error or the one time that Mirage's electro-disruptor works in the cartoon in the way his bio says it does.

* During the final showdown between the Autobots and Decepticons, there is a scene in which Optimus Prime uses his Combat Deck to shoot the fusion cannon off Megatron's arm. This allows them to fight hand to hand. However, only a scene change or two later, Prime throws Megatron to the ground, his cannon perfectly visible in place.

* Also, in the shot of Optimus telling his Combat Deck to fire, there is a mountain visible in the background. When the exact same shot of Prime and the Deck appears again, there's a clear sky behind them.

* Prime is nearly knocked out of commission by the explosion that collapses a Burmese ruby mine, yet he simply seems to shrug off the effects of getting hit by a cruiser cannon and falling to Earth from the very edge of the atmosphere.

* Despite the heights the space cruiser certainly reached before the sabotage, Mirage parachutes down to exactly the spot where the Autobots were assembled.

* The space cruiser is shown crashing into the ocean near the coast. However, later episodes show the cruiser is well far away from any coast line.

Real-world references
* Rocket base Cape Carlson may be a reference to Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Trivia
* This is the only time in the original series that Ravage speaks, relaying the information on the rocket base with his own voice instead of merely replaying Hound and Mirage's conversation about it. When he reappeared in Beast Wars, he was similarly growly, but he had gained an Eastern European accent.

* During the aforementioned final showdown between Optimus Prime and Megatron, an animation oddity results in what a few fans have taken as evidence of an obscure, little-used ability of Optimus: the Finger of Doom. As described, Optimus deploys Combat Deck to shoot Megatron's cannon off of his arm. Simultaneously, Megatron fires his arm cannon and destroys Combat Deck. However, during the shot of Combat Deck exploding, the animation of Prime pointing at Megatron is re-used. The next immediate shot is Megatron being disarmed by an energy blast, which would seem to have come not from Combat Deck, whose blast should have already arrived, but from Prime's immediately prior pointing finger. Thus, Optimus Prime's Finger of Doom.

* In a continuing trend during the Generation 1 cartoon, Prime's Combat Deck looks nothing like its toy counterpart or like it will appear in any future episodes. Not really an error since it's blown up here and could've been rebuilt differently.

Home video releases
* In 1984, this episode was edited together with "Parts 1" and "2" to create a "feature-length movie", which was sold on videocassette as Volume 1 of Family Home Entertainment's Transformers collection. The release had the (now somewhat quaint) honor of being available in both VHS and Betamax formats.

:Road Caesar is an Autobot combiner from the Victory portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

Road Caesar (ロード シーザー Rōdo Shīzā) is the combined form of the Brainmasters, and a warrior almost without compare. Unlike many of his combiner predecessors, who suffered from limited intelligence or other impairments when combined, Road Caesar is a perfect fusion of his component members. He brings together the strength of Blacker, the intelligence of Braver and the skill of Laster to create a being of truly indomitable fighting spirit. If one were to call Star Saber the “king of the skies,” then there's no question that Road Caesar is king of the land. And when these two kings fight side by side, the Decepticons always know they're in for a royal thrashing.

Road Caesar wields the mighty “Road Blade”, a massive sword formed from the combination of Blacker, Braver and Laster's individual blades. But even this weapon pales in comparison to his “Brain Wheel Shocker” technique, which sees Road Caesar launch rings of super-energy from all twelve of his tires. Even his opposite number, the Decepticon Liokaiser, can't stand up to this automotive onslaught.

When Leozack and the Dinoforce attacked Jean's new school on his first day of class, the Brainmasters sped onto the scene to aid Star Saber in defending the institution. The Dinoforce immediately merged into Dinoking, but the Brainmasters were unimpressed and responded in kind, fusing into Road Caesar for their first combiner battle on Earth. While Star Saber dealt with Leozack, Road Caesar sent Dinoking tumbling off a nearby cliff, forcing the villains to retreat. Attack! Leozack

The Brainmasters next combined to defend the Ocean Exhibition amusement park against another attack by Leozack and the Dinoforce. Surrounded by the prehistoric pests, the team merged into Road Caesar with the intention of ending the battle quickly, but the Dinoforce quickly combined into Dinoking to fight back. The two combiners grappled hand-to-hand before drawing their weapons, at which point the sight of the retreating Leozack distracting Dinoking. Nearly sent toppling into the ocean by Road Caesar, the Dinoforce combiner opted to follow Leozack's example, leaving Road Caesar and Star Saber victorious once more. Move Out! Rescue Team

It was some time before the Brainmasters had to form Road Caesar again, but the time eventually came when the Decepticons attacked the Schaeffer Energy plant in America. Star Saber was forced to hold up a collapsing tower until Jean and the Rescue Patrol Team could evacuate the plant's human staff, forcing the Brainmasters to step up to the plate and face off against the Breastforce's combined form of Liokaiser. Road Caesar didn't fare very well in the battle, but he held his own long enough for the evacuation to be completed, freeing up Star Saber to take over the fight and defeat Liokaiser. Battle Up of Wrath!!
Soon after, the Brainmasters were lured into the desert by the Breastforce for a rematch, where Laster and Braver found themselves sinking beneath the shifting sands. Still able to manoeuvre thanks to his dune buggy alternate mode, Blacker was able to combine with his teammates in an attempt at pulling them, but Road Caesar only wound up sinking deeper into the sand. The combiner instead tried to focus his energy to boost his strength, but in doing so, left himself wide open to an attack from behind by Gaihawk, who injured Blacker so badly with his “Ice Needle” attack that he was forcibly disengaged from the other Brainmasters. Star Saber soon arrived to rescue the team, but Blacker was left badly wounded and out of action for some time. Crisis! Ambush in the Desert
The Brainmasters did not form Road Caesar again until Deathsaurus unleashed his Planet-Destroying Fortress upon the Earth. As Road Caesar, the trio were the first to engage the fortress in battle in space, and the first to feel its power, as they narrowly dodged one of its devastating beam attacks. With Greatshot to back him up, Road Caesar gave it his all, but the Autobots' attacks delivered virtually no damage to the fortress's tough armor and eventually, the fortress's weapons struck down the two warriors just as Star Saber arrived to take their place. The Wrath of the Resurrected Giant Fortress! Ordered back to Earth to recuperate, the Brainmasters were left unable to participate in the final battle thanks to their wounds, but Star Saber was still able to destroy the fortress and best Deathsaurus once and for all. {{storylink|Showdown! Road Caesar's first foray onto the battlefield on Earth was not an impressive one. Alongside Star Saber, he raced to the aid of Landcross, who had been defeated by Deathsaurus in a burning forest. With a single swipe, Deathsaurus flattened Star Saber and split Road Caesar back into his component parts; he had super-charged his strength by drawing energy from the forest fire raging around them. Luckily, thanks to a distraction inadvertently caused by Deathsaurus' adopted human son Solon, Star Saber was able to overpower the Decepticon leader and defeat him. Great Turn-Around! Star Saber

Later, when Star Saber was faced with the combined might of Deathsaurus, Dinoking and Liokaiser, Road Caesar was unable to get to his leader in time to help him. Fortunately, the new warrior Victory Leo came to the commander's aid, merging with him to form Victory Saber. In this new form, Star Saber sent the Decepticons packing, just as Road Caesar and Landcross arrived to watch. The Strongest Partners, the Combination of Victory!

During a later battle between Victory Saber and the Brainmasters, and Deathsaurus and Liokaiser, the Decepticons gained the upper hand when Blacker broke off the fight and pursued Solon, who was beginning to doubt his allegiances. Blacker convinced Solon to join the Autobots team of human allies, the Victories, then quickly rejoined his team-mates and merged with Laster and Braver into Road Caesar. The Victories then channelled their energy into their Autobot counterparts for a final attack; boosted by the power of Solon's strength, Shūta's intelligence and Cab's skill, Road Caesar joined with Victory Saber in unleashing the “Victory Caliber” attack, sending the Decepticons fleeing off to their space. {{storylink|Shine!
The Decepticons soon returned and began bombarding Earth with meteors from their “Space Stronghold”. Road Caesar and the other Autobots headed into space to confront the villains; the Brainmasters split back into their individual forms and burst into the fortress in vehicle mode, but quickly recombined to continue the battle. Things were brought to a sudden halt when Deathsaurus revealed the true secret of the fortress: it was home to the Decepticons' families, who they simply wanted to keep safe. Road Caesar and the others reacted with slack-jawed amazement to this revelation, until Star Saber and Deathsaurus decided that it was time to lay down their arms and work together for peace in the future – the truest victory of all! {{storylink|Heroic! :Road Caesar's individual components were available both separately and in a giftset. The team's method of combination is distinctly non-standard, with Laster and Braver serving as one leg each and Blacker forming everything from the thighs up. Silly child-bearing hips aside, the toy is particularly impressive for the time in its lack of “combiner kibble”: all of the additional components required to complete Road Caesar are integrated parts of the individual Blacker, Braver and Laster toys: his chestplate, feet and leg armor are made from the individual robots' shields, while his fists and head are formed from their guns. The three robots' small swords combine to form Road Caesar's large “Road Blade” sword.

:The individual Brainmasters' moulds were later used to make the Motorvators (Flame, Gripper and Lightspeed), but the new toys did not come with the shields or guns necessary to form Road Caesar.

Synopsis
In the Decepticon base, Giga and Mega reveal a secret that they have hidden from Hydra and Buster—they are not the only Godmasters on Earth. The other Godmasters, however, are incomplete beings, lacking a human component, and Giga fears that they could wind up bonded to human beings that would sympathize with the Autobots. He and Mega enigmatically refer to the other Godmasters as their "children", and refuse to permit such a fate to befall them, so Hydra and Buster are dispatched to begin searching the world for the remaining Godmasters.

At the Ocean Research Institute in California, Diver is on the telephone with the head of Baney Aquarium, who has arranged for a sick dolphin to be delivered to the institute so that Diver can take care of it. The dolphin has not yet arrived, however, and Diver soon receives a call from the trucker making the delivery—a young Japanese man named Ginrai—who explains that his truck broke down along the way. He has stopped at a rental shop, where the owner informs him that it will take two or three days to replace his cab, but Ginrai explains that he needs it right away. Cautiously, the owner explains that he does have one cab that will do the job, but that previous owners have reported strange, vaguely supernatural phenomena while driving it. Ginrai is unfazed, and the owner offers to sell it to him; Ginrai decides to complete his delivery as a test drive to see if it's worth the purchase.

Ginrai soon arrives at the Ocean Research Institute, and busies himself washing the cab as the dolphin is unloaded. Lost in thought, he is unable to stop a fork lift from pranging the truck, denting its fender. Soon, he moves on to cleaning out the interior, and discovers a metal sphere in the glove box, which splits open to reveal a pair of golden bracelets. He slips the bracelets on his wrists, but, looking at his reflection in the rear view mirror, decides they don't suit him... only to discover that he is unable to remove them. As he struggles with them, Diver approaches the cab, and is shocked to see the Autobot insignia glowing on the bracelets. Diver demands to know where he got them from, and Ginrai explains; Diver requests that he take him to the rental shop. As the two talk on the drive, Ginrai reveals that he has no idea what Decepticons are, and relates the notion of trying to stand up to such powerful beings to the time that he saw an escaped buffalo raging in a city and kept his distance. When Diver explains that his bracelets will allow him to become just as powerful, however, Ginrai nearly swerves off the road in shock.

Meanwhile, Hydra and Buster's search has brought them to America, the continent where they were merged with their Transtectors. They meet with the Headmaster Juniors, who tell them about a strange rumor going around about a dented truck which fixed itself, and are able to identify the rental shop which loaned the truck out. The two Godmasters immediately head out on the truck's trail...

Ginrai and Diver continue their discussion about the bracelets and the strange phenomena, until suddenly, the truck begins to surge with energy, and begins veering across the road. The dent in the fender slowly begins to disappear, but the truck itself goes crashing off a cliff; Diver leaps free in mid-air and transforms into robot mode, but Ginrai is trapped inside the cab as it lands at the foot of the cliff with the trailer crashing on top of it. As Diver hauls the trailer off, Hydra and Buster appear in the sky overhead and transform to robot mode, intending to take the truck for themselves. Diver tries to fend off the two Godmasters while, inside the cab, the injured, bloodied Ginrai struggles to reach for the door handle. He collapses halfway, and his arms drop, allowing the two bracelets to touch—and in an explosion of light, Ginrai is instantly healed when a suit of armor materializes around his body. The Transformers outside react in shock as the truck itself begins to heal, its crippled and buckled frame springing back into shape perfectly. But the shocks are not over yet—Ginrai bursts through the roof in a flare of energy, and with a cry of "God On", combines with the truck, which transforms into a battle-primed robot! Ginrai himself is suitably shocked by the experience, not to mention the realisation that the robot trying to help him is Diver, and when he learns that Buster and Hydra are Decepticons, his anger activates his Chōkon Power, which he uses to send the two brothers fleeing.

Diver and Ginrai return to their human forms as the sun sets, and Ginrai explains that he left Japan because of the country's stifling atmosphere and came to America as a freelance trucker to enjoy the freedom of the open road, but now he is not sure who he is. Whatever questions Ginrai may have about his identity, though, Diver is sure of one thing – he is the first Autobot Godmaster!
Animation or technical errors
*This episode corrects the error from the previous two, in which the parts of Hydra's robot mode which should be red were colored grey-white.

Transformers references
*The explanation behind Mega and Giga's strange reference to the Godmasters as their children is... a bit on the complicated side. The story behind this unusual claim is expanded on in "A Strange Friendship: Cancer and Minerva"—see that article for more details.
*Boy, Ginrai sure does look a lot like Optimus Prime, doesn't he? Not once during all of Super-God Masterforces broadcast run is this strange similarity addressed—it was eventually explained, in an exclusive segment added to the video release of "You Too Use the Masterforce to Transform" that he looks that way because his Transtector was originally intended for use by Prime.

Trivia
*It's not immediately clear, but since the dent that the truck receives when it's under Ginrai's care doesn't heal until after the Headmaster Juniors tell Buster and Hydra about the rumor, presumably the rumor resulted from the same thing happening when it was being driven by someone else—that being one of the "mysterious phenomena" said to surround the truck.

Some terms...

Ravage's ending from the Transmetals game:
:<i>Ravage decided that it was time for him to fight for the Decepticon legacy once again.
:Ravage betrayed the Predacon Commander Megatron, then entered the ancient Autobot battle cruiser, the Ark. Ravage then produced a prototype cloning device based on transreplication technology.
:This device would allow him to produce clones of the ancient Transformers, complete with memories and personality functions intact.
:One by one, he downloaded protoform cloning data of the legendary warriors... Megatron, Skywarp, Starscream, Thundercracker, Reflector, Rumble, Frenzy, Laserbeak, Buzzsaw... And of course, Soundwave...
:Ravage returned to Predacon space. The moment was close at hand. Soon, he would revive the Decepticon army to conquor the future... To conquor... Forever! </i>

So the term 'transreplication' seems to fit into normal TF replication in Beast-Era. (I'm cautious about that, but I don't see any other conclusion...) The term has to be in there SOMEWHERE at least.

And in the Young Corgi TF books, Hot Rod says he was Matrixed, whichs eems to be the proper term, despite taking place after the Matrix left on the Ark. (Blaster's less than 4 million years old too, so clearly this is POSSIBLE...)

Oh, and YET ANOTHER retellign of TF means of reproduction that leaves out the EXPLICIT DESCRIPTION of how new TF's are made from Dreamwaves MTMTE. Yaay! Oh sure, it's only been otu there for 3 years, but I still run into people who insist on having passionate discussions about how this sort of thing works, insisting they're right- who've never heard of the Dreamwave version. Which is STARTLINGLY SIMILAR to the Transmaters version, and also fits the terminology of the Young Corgi version.

It's an uncomplicated scenario that actually AGREES WITH THE FANNON. Am I really being unrealistic to say 'Gosh, I really wish we'd gotten the one explicit explanation of TF reproduction up here on the first try?' (clearly, I'm being picky) -Derik 06:19, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
Not up on Masterforce. How exactly do the Transectors there gain life, as that should be referenced as well.
:Devil Z uses his powers to do it, methinks that shouldn't be counted as it was like a one time supernatural miracle performed by a god. That would be like recounting Adam and Eve in an article about Human reproduction.
----

In RiD, does it actually say that Prime and Magnus were re-built from existing robots at any point? I recall Prime saying he and Magnus were "created by Alpha Trion," but don't have tapes on me to check. -128.239.180.231 20:27, 26 October 2006
Where does the part about the Matrix Flame being able to create life and being used to make Magnus come from. I've heard it before , but I looked through Target 2006 and I don't see it in there. All that is shown in there is that the Matrix Flame acts as an "indicator light" for the status of the matrix. There's nothing about it creating life or Magnus that I can see. : I would say a joke. It's just a dehumanization (so to speak) of the other side, as in "I didn't even know Communists HAD mothers!" That doesn't imply Communists don't have mothers, just that they're perceived to be too inhuman to be normal people with normal relationships like good red-blooded Americans. --ItsWalky 22:54, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

For those of you who don't frequent the Transformers section of Fanfiction.net, "sparkling" is a fandom term for a Transformer baby or child. Why the hell do ROBOTS have genetic material? Even if Furman never passed high school biology, a quick wiki search would do a lot to counter that theory!
Sorry, I'm just frusterated when the people that are supposed to be professional writers do less research than fan fiction writers. You would think "professional" would indicate a level of quality. --Nightshade83 16:23, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

:Um.. Transformers are not robots of the sort you could do any research about on the net. They're unimaginably advanced, infinately more complex and technologically different alien lifeforms that just happen to be of a robotic nature. There's absolutely no reason they shouldn't have their own robotic equivilent of genetic material. --ZacWilliam 16:36, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
:Since they can reproduce, they obviously have genetic material of some sort. It might just consist of a stored database of standard Transformer parts, normal ways to put a TF together, etc. It's probably much more complicated than that, given that in many continuiities, TFs appear to have something going on at the nanometer scale.
Short synopsis
The Autobots have found a home in "NEST", a secret military unit created to seek out and eliminate the remaining Decepticons. All is not well, however. Unbeknownst to them, Soundwave is in orbit, coordinating the Decepticon counterstrike. After Ravage steals the Allspark shard from NEST, a team of Constructicons and The Doctor journey to the bottom of the ocean and use it revive Megatron. The Decepticon leader journeys to the crashed Nemesis, rebukes Starscream, and meets with his master, The Fallen.

The Fallen explains that he had constructed a Solar Harvester on Earth, in violation of the Primes' code to never harm an inhabited planet. The Primes turned on him, banished and imprisoned him. However the Harvester still stands, and only one Prime remains. If Megatron destroys Optimus Prime, The Fallen will be freed to activate the Harvester, which will kill off the humans and provide the Decepticons with enough energon to raise an army. Megatron eagerly agrees, and returns to Earth with a vengeance.

It transpires that the location of the Harvester is hidden within Sam Witwicky, who absorbed the knowledge from another Allspark fragment. The Decepticons begin an all-out war across the Earth as they hunt down the human, and the Autobots and NEST are blamed for the ensuing carnage. Witwicky goes to ground, and must turn to unlikely allies in the race to find a solution. Ultimately, the last of the Primes defeats The Fallen, destroys the Harvester, and proves the Transformers' greatest power is found in their unexpectedly-ancient alliance with the humans.

Full synopsis
In 17,000 B.C., Transformers already were on Earth and built a machine.

Two years after the battle of Mission City, the Autobots have teamed up with the American soldiers, including Lennox and Epps, in a secret team named NEST under the command of the US military, but also incorporating soldiers from other countries such as the United Kingdom. Officially, the US government still keeps the Transformers' existence a secret. In Shanghai, China, NEST tracks down the Decepticons Demolishor and Sideways and kill them. Just before he is killed by Optimus Prime, Demolishor delivers a cryptic message that someone named "The Fallen" will rise again.

Meanwhile, Sam Witwicky is preparing for his move to college when he finds a shard of the All Spark which brings numerous kitchen devices to life. After Bumblebee has destroyed the kitchen robots (and parts of the Witwickys' house with them), Sam hands the All Spark shard to Mikaela. He then tells Bumblebee to stay behind, since he isn't allowed to have a car at college.

Arriving at college, Sam meets his roommate, Leo Spitz, who operates a conspiracy website and is convinced that alien robots are hiding on Earth. At a frat party, Sam also meets his fellow student Alice, who attempts to seduce Sam. Whens Bumblebee shows up, she takes a ride with Sam, but Bumblebee does everything he can to convince her to leave. Bumblebee then takes Sam to Optimus Prime, who is convinced—for some reason—that Sam is in danger.

Meanwhile, NEST is visited by National Security Advisor Theodore Galloway, who is convinced that the only reason the new Decepticons have come to Earth is because the Autobots are still there. Therefore, he suggests that they may leave the planet. When Galloway reveals the location of the All Spark shard Optimus Prime had picked up after killing Megatron over an unsecure line, the transmission is picked up by Soundwave, who is stationed in orbit around Earth, disguised as a satellite. Soundwave promptly sends his minion Ravage to Earth, where he he infiltrates the NEST base on Diego Garcia and steals the shard. Ravage and several Constructicons then dive to the bottom of the Laurentian Abyss, where the US military has dumped Megatron's remains. Using the shard and spare parts from one of the Constructicons (who is presumably killed), "The Doctor" is able to revive Megatron, who promptly travels to one of Saturn's moons, where the Nemesis is used as a base by the Decepticons. He is awaited by Starscream and his master, The Fallen.

Meanwhile, Sam is starting to see strange symbols, and believes it may have something to do with him touching the All Spark shard. When he calls Mikaela to warn her not to touch it, a Decepticon named Wheelie, disguised as a remote-controlled toy pickup, tries to steal the shard, but is captured by Mikaela. Mikaela promtply boards a plane to see Sam, but whens he arrives, she finds him in what appears to be an intimate moment with Alice. It soon turns out, however, that Alice is a Decepticon as well. Mikaela, Sam and Leo, who has stumbled across her robotic self by coincidence, try to escape, but are captured by the Decepticons. Megatron orders "The Doctor" to remove Sam's brain in order to access the information from the All Spark shard, but Optimus Prime and Bumblebee have managed to locate them and free Sam, Mikaela and Leo. Together, they attempt to flee, but in order for Sam to escape, Optimus Prime has to fight Megatron, Starscream and Grindor all by himself. After killing Grindor, Optimus is impaled by Megatron and dies. Just then, the other Autobots arrive, causing Megatron and Starscream to retreat.

In a hijacked TV broadcast, The Fallen reveals his existence to the world public and demands Sam to be surrendered to him. Decepticons land around the globe, killing several thousand people. In Paris, one of them tracks down Sam's parents, Ron and Judy Witwicky. Galloway uses the attacks an as excuse to shut down NEST and have the Autobots placed under guard, while a manhunt begins for Sam.

Sam, meanwhile, is hiding out with Mikaela, Leo, Bumblebee and the Autobot twins, Skids and Mudflap. Leo eventually suggests they may ask his rival, "Robo-Warrior", owner of a competing website, for help. To everyone's surprise, Robo-Warrior turns out to be non other than Seymour Simmons, former agent of Sector Seven. Simmons reveals that symbols similar to those Sam is obsessed with have been found on numerous excavation sites around the world, but in order to read them, they may need a Decepticon. Mikaela then interrogates Wheelie, who suggests they may track down one of the Seekers. At the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, they discover an old Decepticon named Jetfire, disguised as an SR-71 Blackbird.

Jetfire claims he has defected to the Autobots and tells them about The Fallen, who betrayed his brothers, the Primes, many millennia ago. The Fallen intends to destroy the Earth's sun in order to create Energon, the Transformers' source of energy. The symbols in Sam's head are a map to the location of the solar harvester, the weapon the Fallen intends to use to destroy the sun. Jetfire also reveals that only a Prime can stop The Fallen, and a key is needed to activate the Harvester, the Matrix of Leadership. Sam suggests that they may use the Matrix to revive Optimus Prime, which is backed up by Jetfire.

Jetfire opens a space bridge and teleports himself as well as Sam, Mikaela, Leo, Simmons, Bumblebee and the Twins to Egypt. Between the Pyramids of Giza, they find the next clue and travel to Jordan. On the way, Simmons calls Lennox and instructs him to get his team, as well as the dead body of Optimus Prime, to Egypt. In Petra, they discover the tomb of the Primes. Inside, Sam finds the Matrix, which instantly crumbles into dust into his hands. Sam collects the dust regardless, and together, they travel back to Egypt. Meanwhile, Lennox has tricked Galloway into parachuting out of the cargo plane, and eventually the NEST team parachutes down and prepares for battle near the pyramids.

Before Sam and the others can get back to Lennox and his people, the Decepticons start there attack. The Constructicons merge into Devastator, who proceeds to swallow Mudflap. Mudflap, however, is able to free himself, and together with Skids, they try to slow Devastator down. While the Autobots and NEST fight the Decepticons, Megatron intends to use Sam's parents to lure him into a trap. Sam, falling into the trap, offers to hand over the Matrix dust to the Constructicon Rampage, but only to stall for time until Bumblebee is able to attack and destroy Rampage. Ravage attacks Bumblebee from behind, but is killed as well. Sam then orders Bumblebee to get his parents to safety while he and Mikaela try to reach Optimus Prime's body.

In the meantime, Devastator has begun to to take apart the pyramid that has been built around the Harvester. Simmons calls a navy ship off the coast of Egypt and orders the use of a railgun, which is fired at Devastator and apparently destroys him. Meanwhile, Sam is mortally hit by the blast of a shot fired by Megatron. While paramedics try to reanimate him, the Matrix dust gets spilled across his hand, and Sam encounters the dead Primes in a vision. The Primes tell him that he was destined to find the Matrix and save the life of the last Prime. Sam returns to life, and the dust in his hand turns back into the Matrix. With the Matrix, Sam is able to revive Optimus Prime.

Just then, The Fallen teleports himself next to Optimus Prime, grabs the Matrix and teleports himself to the pyramid, where he uses the Matrix to activate the Harvester. Jetfire, who has joined the battle, killing Mixmaster before being fatally wounded by Scorponok, instructs Optimus Prime to use his parts to battle The Fallen, and then rips out his own Spark. Ratchet and Jolt then proceed to turn Jetfire's remains into a battle armor for Optimus Prime, who is then able to destroy the Harvester and kill The Fallen. After the death of his master, Megatron, who has been severely damaged in the battle, follows Starscream's suggestion and retreats.

With the battle won, the Autobots, NEST, Sam and his friends return to the USA on board of an aircraft carrier. Upon his return, Sam continues to attend college.
While the Decepticons were disgusted with the pro-Autobot propaganda of Bay's first documentary Transformers Comic issue 13, they're quite optimistic about the second film. The United States premiere was held on June 22nd, 2009, in Los Angeles.
In the week leading up to the United States release, while the film had been released in Japan and the United Kingdom, Revenge of the Fallen was ranking 38% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.com. As American reviews were added into the ranking on June 24, the movie's freshness slipped slowly to 22%. RottenTomatoes.com's consensus was that "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is a noisy, underplotted, and overlong special effects extravaganza that lacks a human touch." Roger Ebert, who gave the movie one star, remarked that "if you want to save yourself the ticket price, go into the kitchen, cue up a male choir singing the music of hell, and get a kid to start banging pots and pans together." Todd Gilchrist of Cinematical.com said Michael Bay "has exceeded even the possibilities of sequel-driven 'moreness,' combining his own muscular, high-gloss sensibility with the conventions of blockbusters past, present, and probably future to create a monolithic action masterpiece that feels destined to be the biggest movie of all time." Michael Phillips from the Chicago Tribune said "the first, comparatively lucid Transformers was a headache, but I sort of enjoyed it....Revenge of the Fallen is more like listening to rocks in a clothes dryer for 2½ hours." Roger Ebert went back for more in a second article, declaring not only that Revenge of the Fallen was awful, but that it'd ruined action films FOREVER.
A huge controversy revolved around the characters of the "Twins", Skids and Mudflap, which many critics and viewers believed to be racist stereotypes of poorly educated black American teenagers. Director Michael Bay, when confronted with those accusations, claimed that the personalities of the two characters were primarily created in the recording studio by voice actors Tom Kenny and Reno Wilson (the latter of which is an African American himself). Screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci confirmed that this portrayal of the characters hadn't been in the script, and admitted that they could understand the controversy.
Despite the overwhelmingly negative reviews, Revenge of the Fallen poised itself quickly as a blockbuster maelstrom. It grossed $16 million in its opening midnight showings alone, an all-time record for Wednesday openings and a second-best for openings on any day of the week behind The Dark Knight. After the full Wednesday was over, Revenge of the Fallen had grossed $55 million in domestic ticket sales, surpassing the previous Wednesday release record, held by Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, by over $10 million. By the end of the first five days, Revenge of the Fallen had taken an estimated $201.2 million in the United States, just shy of The Dark Knight's record $203.8 million 5-day US total. ==Trivia==
*The official title of the film is Revenge of the Fallen (with a lower-case "t" in "the") even though it is apparently referring to The Fallen (with a capital "T" in "The").
*Leo's room features posters for Naruto, Cloverfield, and Bad Boys 2.
*During the scenes set in and around the deli in NYC, posters for the bands Catch Twenty-Two and Voodoo Glow Skulls are prominently featured.
*Even though Revenge features mostly domestic voice actors for the foreign market dubs, Frank Welker is credited for voicing Soundwave not only in English, but also in the Italian and German dub. As a result, in the Italian dub of the movie, Soundwave speaks with a strange, foreign accent. Meanwhile, German voice acting experts are convinced that the German credit is wrong, as they believe to recognize a different German voice actor.
*The prequel novel introduced other Autobots into the ranks of NEST—Longarm, Salvage, and Knockout. There were present up until the events directly leading into the Shanghai incident, but were not present for any of the events featured in the film or adaptations. The Veiled Threat

Transformers references
In addition to carryovers from the previous film, various concepts and characters are derived from previous iterations of Transformers:
* The whole concept of "Transformers disguised as a human" used for Alice is inspired by the Pretenders. Roberto Orci even used the term "Pretender" during an interview before the movie's release. However, a Transformer with an "organic" alt-mode instead of an external shell is a concept more reminiscent of the Beast Era.
* The Generation 1 iteration of Jetfire is frequently portrayed as switching from Decepticon to Autobot (he's usually a young and technologically up-to-the-minute 'bot, however.)
* Soundwave and his ejectible minion Ravage both have Generation 1 counterparts. Movie Soundwave even has the same voice actor as 1984 cartoon Soundwave, using the same voice, though without the synthetic vocal processing that made the cartoon voice so distinctive.
* Sideswipe bears little physical resemblance to his Generation 1 namesake, but is a vaguely similar character archetype, and he does have that characteristic door armor hanging from his elbows.
* Generation 1 Arcee was the first female Transformer with a starring role, and was likewise a pink-colored girlbot. The idea of Arcee the pink girlbot as a motorcycle dates back to Energon.
* Devastator, the combined form of the Constructicons, was the first combiner robot in Generation 1.
* The characters are new, but the names "Mudflap", "Skids", "Jolt", "Rampage" and "Wheelie" are not. Likewise for the concept of "Seekers".
* Optimus Prime dying and coming back to life has been done times beyond counting.
* Prime combining with another 'bot to increase his power (and often gain flight capabilities) is a trope that has occurred in many recent Transformers series (Robots in Disguise, Armada, Energon, Cybertron.) In Armada, a different Jetfire was his most frequent combination partner. This is the first time the other 'bot had to die for it to happen, though.
* The Fallen is based on a comic book character that made his debut in the 2004 miniseries The War Within: The Dark Ages. In fact, according to Hasbro, he is the exact same character!
* The Matrix of Leadership is one of the franchise's oldest MacGuffins.
* Energon (mentioned though never seen) is the Transformers' power source in numerous incarnations, beginning with the original cartoon.
* The concept of a protoform as the first stage of a Transformer is a reference to the same concept introduced on the Beast Wars cartoon.
* Though it is almost certainly not an actual reference (it's a pretty generic and predictable sci-fi trope), the solar harvester is quite similar in function to the Solar Needle from the Generation 1 episode "Changing Gears", sucking energy from the Sun to produce energon. Both devices would have destroyed the Sun if allowed to fulfill their function.
* The same is true for Sam having Cybertronian knowledge pumped directly into his brain via a sacred Transformer talisman, which is reminiscent of Buster Witwicky's similar situation in the Marvel G1 comics.

In September of 2007, Paramount officially announced the first sequel for June 2009. Bay was given a budget of $200 million, and ultimately managed to come in $4 million below that.

The Transformers screenwriters, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, initially hesitated writing the sequel, but ultimately had a change of mind. In October 2007, Ehren Kruger was confirmed as a third writer, who, according to Kurtzman, brought in a "fresh perspective", and who reportedly impressed both director Michael Bay and Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner with his knowledge of Transformers mythology.

In April 2009, Roberto Orci confirmed that cartoon voice actor Frank Welker would voice Soundwave. Welker had previously been considered as Megatron's voice actor in the first movie, but ultimately Michael Bay had given that part to Hugo Weaving instead. Both Bay and the writers were also hoping that Leonard Nimoy could voice a character in the movie. Even though Nimoy openly asked Bay to simply give him a call, it ultimately never worked out: after watching his guest appearance on Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Bay selected Tony Todd - whom he worked on with The Rock - for the voice of The Fallen instead.

Writing and production
For the movie, Orci and Kurtzman searched the various Transformers comics and cartoons for "the most elemental bad guy", and eventually found one in The Fallen.

In addition to that, they wanted to include many things in the sequel that hadn't made it into the first movie, including the Decepticon Soundwave. Likewise, the Matrix of Leadership had initially been intended to be used in the first movie, but for fear of confusion with the Matrix movies, the cube had been renamed into All Spark. In return, the Matrix in Revenge of the Fallen bears more resemblance to the Generation 1 Matrix.

In late 2007, during pre-production for then-untitled Transformers sequel, the Writers Guild of America went on strike, but according to all parties involved, this didn't slow down preparations of the movie much in the long run. Screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci turned in their first outline of the script the night before the strike officially began. During the strike, director Michael Bay used the script as a basis for preparing the movie. After the strike had ended, Kurtzman, Orci and Ehren Kruger continued their work on the script, based on Bay's changes. One consequence of this development was that Michael Bay and Hasbro had selected some of the new Transformers characters that were to would appear in the movie during the strike, because of the long production run of the toys, while they had legally not been allowed to consult with the screenwriters. The "Twins", Skids and Mudflap, are Bay's creation.

In early June of 2008, DreamWorks, Paramount and Hasbro officially confirmed the movie's title to be Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen. A few weeks later, Roberto Orci confirmed that there would be no "2" in the title.

Principal shooting began in June 2008 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Other shooting sites were Philadelphia, the campus of Princeton University, Long Beach, the Holloman Air Force Base and the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. Some scenes were also shot in other countries, at the Pyramids of Giza and in Luxor, Egypt, in Jordan and in Paris.

According to director Michael Bay, Revenge is the first movie in abour 30 years to be given permission to shoot at the Pyramids of Giza, and the first movie ever to film on top of Petra. He obtained permission to film in Egypt by contacting Zahi Hawass, secretary general of Egypt's council of antiquities, who turned out to be a fan of the 2007 Transformers movie.

During the time of shooting, actor Shia LaBeouf suffered a severe injury of his left hand in a car accident. Ultimately, however, filming was only briefly halted, and his injury worked into the film, thereby not adversely affecting the filming schedule. For the movie, director Michael Bay earned himself an entry in the Guiness Book of Records for the "biggest explosion on film with actors present".

Sponsors and partners
Hasbro
Hasbro once again acted both as a licensor and actively participated in the development of the movie. Together with the first Transformers movie, the G.I. Joe movie Rise of the Cobra and several other planned movie projects such as Monopoly, Stretch Armstrong and Battleships, Revenge of the Fallen marks the beginning of a new company policy for Hasbro, believing that the new "the movie of the toy" strategy will be more lucrative than the old "the toy of the movie" concept, which involves hefty licensing fees. Still, director Michael Bay receives an 8% cut of all toy sales from the Transformers movies. During the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike, when nobody was legally allowed to consult with the screenwriters, Hasbro and Bay selected several of the new Transformers characters that were to appear in the movie.

US military
The United States military also supported the movie again, providing vehicles, shooting locations and military personnel that appear as extras in the movie. Due to scheduling coincidences, Revenge of the Fallen was given a larger support by the US Department of Defense than G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra, which was produced at the same time. Initially, Bay had intended to include German soldiers in the movie (presumably as members of NEST), but even though the soldiers were eager to participate, the German government denied the request.

General Motors
American car manufacturer General Motors once again provided vehicles that were used by the Autobots as their alternate modes. Returning from the first movie were the GMC Topkick (Ironhide), the Hummer H2 (Ratchet) and the new Chevrolet Camaro (Bumblebee), the latter this time as a slightly updated Z/28 model as compared to the first movie's concept car model. Newcomers for Revenge of the Fallen are all from the Chevrolet brand, namely the Chevrolet Beat (Skids), the Chevrolet Trax (Mudflap), a new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray concept car (Sideswipe) and, as a last minute addition, the new Chevrolet Volt electric car (Jolt).

In total, General Motors provided 67 vehicles, 52 of them being prototypes not intended for sale. As a consequence of the 2007-onwards financial crisis, however, General Motors reduced their financial support for Revenge in April of 2009.

Director Michael Bay estimates that, without the support of general Motors and the military, production of the movie would have cost $10 million more than the $195 million ultimate spent. Coinciding with the release of Revenge of the Fallen, General Motors reported that sales of the new Chevrolet Camaro were so strong that orders were outrunning the supply, even though the car was being sold above MSRP in many places. A direct connection to the movie, however, could not be proven.

Product placement
Like in the first movie, numerous companies signed a deal with the filmmakers which allowed for their product being featured in prominent places in the movie. A Mountain Dew vending machine can be seen in Leo's room, computer screens feature visible Cisco logos, Sam and Mikaela intend to communicate via iChat, a huge HSBC logo is seen at Times Squre in New York City, a Budweiser bottle is prominently featured in one of the Paris scenes, CNN is everyone's preferred news channel, and a giant IMAX logo is seen inside the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. In return, Mars heavily advertized Revenge of the Fallen with their chocolate candy brand M&M's.

Changes before, during and after production
*According to comic book writer Simon Furman, the Dinobots had been in an early draft of the movie's plot, but were dropped from the cast very early in development.
*One scene that didn't make it into the final movie would have explained Alice's sorta-human disguise: In it, Leo watches a TV ad featuring an Alice in Wonderland animatronic from an amusement park, which heavily resembles Alice. The scene was featured in the comic adaptation and the novelization. It's unclear if the scene has actually been filmed; however, the movie still features the follow-up scene in which Leo shows up to tell Sam something about Alice, only to see her robot tongue strangle him.

Disinformation
In April of 2008, director Michael Bay claimed he had initiated a huge disinformation campaign in order to prevent content details from the movie from being revealed to the public before he wanted them to. Ultimately, Bay himself turned out to be the main source of genuine disinformation, despite claiming that only what he said was 100% true. Therefore, the disinformation campaign mostly hinged on fans believing in its existence, and rejecting any genuinely "leaked" information, including set photos, statements by third parties such as Hasbro or IDW Publishing and stolen toy prototypes, as "disinformation". Screenwriter Roberto Orci eventually admitted that the disinformation campaign wasn't really working.

For the longest time, Bay upheld the position that Megatron would not return in Revenge of the Fallen. After concept designs of Megatron's new alternate mode had surfaced (some of which would later turn out to be designs of the RPM Megatron toy), Bay insisted that this was "just Hasbro coming up with a new toy", and Megatron would not appear in the movie. Following officially released evidence to the contrary (including Megatron's brief appearance in the February 1 Superbowl TV spot and the February teaser trailer), screenwriter Roberto Orci confirmed that Megatron would indeed return. Shortly afterwards, Bay retracted from his claims, but not entirely, suggesting that Megatron would only appear in a flashback scene "from the long lost past", despite the fact Megatron could be seen pinning Sam Witwicky to the ground in the aforementioned TV spot and teaser trailer. He also denied that Megatron would transform into a tank.

Bay also tried to have information prematurely revealed by third parties contained after the fact: During San Diego Comic-Con 2008, in an interview on July 25th, comic book writer Simon Furman revealed that the film would feature a character called The Fallen, which was a character they had created for Dreamwave's The War Within: The Dark Ages. Three days later, IDW Publishing writer Chris Mowry corroborated the claim in an interview with MTV Splash Page, calling "The Fallen" the main villain of Revenge. Arcee was also confirmed in the same interview. Less than a week after this, however, Michael Bay reiterated that everything leaked thus far was part of his alleged disinformation campaign, and that only a handful of people involved with the production of Revenge of the Fallen had actually seen the script, contradicting IDW's interviews where their representatives confirm that they have the script. Additionally, Bay claimed the only truth about the film revealed up to that point was Sam going to college. Curiously, on August 5th 2008, after a fan had pointed out the contradiction to Bay, all references to The Fallen (and Arcee) were removed from the aforementioned interviews, as well as any references to IDW Publishing having the script.

Errors
*Bumblebee picks up Sam at a frat party in the evening. He then takes him to a graveyard where it's daytime.

*During Sam's campus freakout, when he drops his notes on the steps, a blonde woman in a suit can be seen coming down the steps to his left, nearly reaching him. However, when the camera angle shifts, the woman is suddenly at the top of the stairs again.

*On the sonar, there are "five contacts" diving down to Megatron's location, and "six contacts" going up after his resurrection. Since one Constructicon was killed to repair Megatron, shouldn't there be only five contacts going up as well? Keep in mind, Scalpel is too small to register on sonar, but Ravage is just large enough.

*When the USS Theodore Roosevelt is sunk by Decepticon transition forms, the hull number of 74 can clearly be seen.fact CVN-74 belongs to the USS John C. Stennis, a carrier that shows up later in the film and was also the carrier used for filming.

*When Jetfire is activated at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum (actually the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, an annex of the Smithsonian) in Washington, he leaves the exhibition center and exits into the desert location of the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (aka The Boneyard), which is in Tuscon, Arizona. When Jetfire breaks out of the building, we can see a composited image of the Boneyard's rows of planes, so it's arguable that in this universe the middle of Washington DC happens to be a desert full of old planes, and no buildings and uh... heh heh. Given that this and the Transformers are the only changes between this universe and ours, that's a stretch.
