Transformers: The Thirteen was a planned comics series to be published by IDW Publishing, which was to have been written by Simon Furman with art by Nick Roche, focusing on the thirteen original Transformers.

At the 2009 IDW panel, however, it was announced that the project was "off the schedule" for the foreseeable future, and may never see release.

Items of note
* Hasbro had become highly involved in this since it was pitched, and Furman stated a lot of effort was being put in to ensure it was "something that comprehensively underpins the whole TF-universe in a very major and enduring way".

* The series was "shuffled" back a few times before being effectively cancelled, for reasons which included the twin pressures of the second live-action film and the 25th Anniversary in 2009. When originally pitched, the intended artist was Nick Roche ("and may well be again, who knows").

* In October 2009 Hasbro revealed in Q&A answers that they have worked out at least some definite plans for the story of the 13 and plan to tell the story of these "Original Epic Warriors of Cybertron" at some point soon. Whether that will be in the form of an IDW comic or something else is yet unknown.
Galvatron is triumphant<br>
Can they turn the tide?

Synopsis
Galvatron gloats to the Autobots that with the power of Fortress Maximus he is unstoppable. As they hang helpless in the air, he first shocks and then drops them all to the ground. Side Burn drags himself to the edge of a huge crater, at the bottom of which Optimus Prime lays battered. As Optimus struggles up, Scourge and Ruination burst through the crater wall and open fire on the Autobot leader. Sky-Byte and the Predacon trio peer cautiously out of the hole as well, worrying what Galvatron will do to them if he spots them. Unfortunately for them, Galvatron already has spotted them, and orders them to attack the Autobots. Figuring that Galvatron will always be the scarier of the two options, the four Predacons get ready to fight, and are promptly trampled by the oncoming forces.

The Autobots come to Optimus Prime's aid, hailing the Decepticons with a barrage of weapons fire. High above the battlefield, Galvatron laughs and seizes them all in an energy field. T-AI opens a portal to the space bridge nearby, but Optimus is seized by a beam from Galvatron. He orders his men to enter the space bridge, but they block the beam of energy, freeing him. Though Optimus stubbornly refuses to go, he's grabbed by Ultra Magnus and carried off.

In the space bridge, Optimus persuades Magnus to help him return to to the battle. They form Omega Prime and challenge Galvatron to a one-on-one fight. Galvatron follows Omega into the space bridge, where Omega instructs T-AI to open portals to the Earth's molten core and close them once he and Galvatron have gone through. T-AI and Koji protest that that will trap the pair of them, but Omega makes it a direct order. Koji, however, has a brainwave and begins contacting other children over the Internet.

Omega Prime leads Galvatron to the Earth's core, but his strength is quickly sapped by the conditions while Galvatron thrives. Koji's plan begins to work and Fortress Maximus becomes re-energised with the power sent to him by all of the children. Galvatron boasts that he has discovered a great power—the world's children—which he intends to harness. He's interrupted by the arrival of a massive burst of energy passed on by Fortress Maximus, which re-powers Omega Prime and creates the mighty Matrix Blade. The pair clash violently until Galvatron's Striker Lance shatters, and an immense explosion lights up the sky. T-AI cries that while Omega may have won, he's still trapped.

Sometime later, Koji sadly looks around the parking building where the Autobot base is located, commenting that the place seems deserted. As he trudges down the road, a fire engine pulls up behind him—it's Optimus Prime. Optimus tells Koji that they'll be going back to Cybertron soon, but first they're going to have a last look around. Optimus got free because the sheer force of the blast that deactivated Galvatron reactivated the space bridge and freed him. Sure enough, the Autobots are all engaging in their usual leisure activities. Fortress Maximus and Ultra Magnus are taking the Decepticons and Predacons back to Cybertron—all except Sky-Byte, who's vanished without a trace...
Quotes
"I know! If we retreat, Galvatron will destroy us, and if we fight, we don't stand a chance. What do we do?!"<br>
"Galvatron's a lot meaner than they are."
:—Sky-Byte frets while Dark Scream applies logic to a hopeless situation.

"Now, stand tall, stand proud, and show those Autobots what you're forged from."
:—Sky-Byte prepares to lead his Predacons to epic victories...

Sky-Byte: That went... swimmingly.<br>
Gas Skunk: We showed them, all right.<br>
Slapper: I think I dented one of their feet with my face.<br>
Dark Scream: We win.
:—...seconds later, they seem happy to take solace in smaller ones.

"Go ahead, Galvatron, and do your worst. It doesn't matter! You're not gonna beat us, no matter what you do, because you're a poser, Galvatron. Always have been, always will be!"
:—Side Burn cuts Galvatron bad.

"Mayday, mayday! The Autobots need our help. We've got to re-energize Fortress Maximus. We've got to send him energy from all over the world, from as many kids as we can contact in order to give him enough power to re-activate. Call every friend you've got! All of us have to work together to protect the Earth! It's up to us now, guys. Galvatron's trying to steal our world and our future, but we're not gonna let him! We were able to activate Fortress Maximus before, and now we're gonna do it again. We've got to!"
:—Koji attempts to save Earth by harnessing the power of chain-letter e-mail spam.

"Resistance is an exercise in futility."
:—Galvatron trying to hide the fact he's secretly a Trekkie.

"This power resides in the hearts and minds of Earth's children. Their fundamental belief that the universe is a place where goodness prevails over evil is the most powerful force in existence. But once I've warped their minds, evil will prevail and I will reign supreme!"
:—Galvatrons plan leaves a little to be desired.

"Go ahead, flail away! Your new-found energy won't last you much longer, and then you're mine!"<br>
"I disagree!"
:—As the final, climactic exchange between Galvatron and Omega Prime, it has to be said that this is pretty weak.
:—Perhaps appropriately, the last word (or song), belongs to Sky-Byte, the true star of this show.

Other notes
Continuity errors
* After being absent for the entire previous episode, Skid-Z, Tow-Line and the Spy Changers are all back.
* Sky-Byte suggests to the Predacon Trio that Galvatron thinks that he's gotten rid of them already and will react badly to seeing them still alive; however, Galvatron has no reason to think the Predacon Trio dead, and never showed any actual intention of killing any of them anyway.
* The whereabouts of Scourge and the Decepticons is fairly unclear for most of this finale; they're last seen being fired upon by the Autobots when Galvatron intervenes, and are not seen again until the epilogue, where we're told that they were captured.

Dub errors
*While Galvatron battles Omega Prime, he declares "I have discovered a power even greater than every Cybertron in the universe combined!" , referring to the Autobots, who in Japan are called Cybertrons.

Transformers references
* When things are looking their bleakest, the self-sacrificing Omega Prime makes the decision to seal himself and Galvatron in the Earth's core, giving his life to save the planet. It doesn't come to that in the end, but if it had, it wouldn't exactly be without precedent.

Real-world references
* The depiction of the Predacons' and Decepticons' final imprisonment inside flat, rotating crystals seems to owe an awful lot to Superman: The Movie's Phantom Zone.

Miscellaneous trivia
* At the start of the episode, Optimus is in battle mode. After hitting the ground (and causing a sizable crater), he's back in regular old Optimus mode. Where did his trailer go?
* Following on from the previous episode's omission of Galvatron's energy-draining do-baddery, this Robots in Disguise episode makes another change to the Japanese Car Robots story to once again to remove the villain's vampiric victimization. Rather than challenge Omega Prime to a final showdown and allowing him to pick the battlefield, in Car Robots, Galvatron specifically instructs Prime to open the Global Space Bridge to Earth's core, where he intends to absorb the energy of the planet itself. Prime's plan to trap Galvatron at the Earth's core is created for Robots in Disguise and unlike the previous changes, is a bit more noticeable, on account of how it doesn't work very well with the existing visuals of the episode—after all, if the spacebridge was supposed to be shut down to keep Galvatron trapped, why was a portal conveniently lying wide open for Fortress Maximus to transmit his energy through?
* Galvatron's "absorb the power of children" dealie is also created for Robots in Disguise, probably to create some sort of justification for the sorta ludicrous "children's good will makes green energy that falls out of the sky" business that happens with Fortress Maximus this episode. With the show having gone this route, you're left thinking that Galvatron draining energy from the kids in the previous episode might have been better kept, as it could have served as some sort of lead-in to this oddness.

* On the flipside, in Car Robots, Omega Prime's final strike with the Matrix Blade actually didn't finish Galvatron off. Galvatron defeated Omega Prime and began draining his energy as well, leading to the fatal cartoon villain mistake of trying to absorb too much energy at once, being overloaded and zonking out. Which is a hell of a lot less dramatic, especially when it all happens off-screen and is only ever related after the fact by Prime.
* Despite the comprehensiveness of its approach to the story's characters and loose ends, the epilogue declines to make any mention of Ultra Magnus in dialogue. His fate is not unknown, though—he apparently took the Predacons and Decepticons into custody, as he can (just about) be spotted standing on the hull of Fortress Maximus as the battleship flies through space.
Expanded to enormous proportions, Optimus and Galvatron wage their final battle in space and on Jungle Planet.

Synopsis
Super-sized Galvatron flies off into space, followed by his loyal troops, who wonder where he's heading. The Autobots attack, and a melee ensues. Optimus and Rodimus wonder where Galvatron is heading, but suspect he's being led to the same place that they are. Optimus tells Rodimus to take over leadership if he doesn't return from the upcoming final struggle with Galvatron.

The Omnicons continue feeding Super Energon stars into Primus, who's slowly coming out of sleep mode. The Omnicons have depleted their reserves.

Optimus and Omega recombine and attack Galvatron, hitting him in the nosecone. But Prime splits off from Omega, saying that this battle is soly between him and Galvatron. He begins powering up, attacking as a glowing ball of light. His arms emerge, super-sized, and hurl Galvatron away. He emerges enlarged, the same size as his nemesis. The two titans battle, and Optimus bashes Galvatron to the surface of Jungle Planet.

Optimus follows, and they face off, preparing for the final battle. As Galvatron prepares himself, his eyes regain their greenish tint. Troops from both sides scramble to reinforce their respective leaders. The ancient Energon guardians squabble and begin to fight.

Optimus and Galvatron battle. Prime throws Galvatron away, then rocks back. And forth. And back. And forth. And back. (yes, I counted.) They continue to battle; Optimus orders his troops to stay out of it, and Starscream likewise holds back the Decepticons from helping. Galvatron runs Optimus through with his sword, but takes a blow at the same time; both fall. But Prime rises and continues waling on him.

On Cybertron, Scorponok is out for a stroll, when he realizes that Galvatron is in trouble. But Ironhide appears and says he'll have to get through him first.

Superion takes on Bruticus and Constructicon. When they get him down, he launches his limbs, which pin Constructicon Maximus to a wall. Superion's central component charges Constructicon in a ball of light, causing him to die. Laser blasts from Bruticus destroy Superion Maximus's limbs before he can recombine.

Galvatron and Prime continue fighting, with a notable lack of quips and taunts from both combatants. As Jetfire approaches the battle, Kicker says that he senses Unicron... from both of them.

The Unicron orb still exists.

Kicker senses this.

No really, the Unicron orb still exists.

Kicker orders Jetfire into space, to destroy Unicron.

Bruticus crushes what's left of Superion, until a shot from out of the blue destroys one of Bruticus's arms. Superion briefly sees a vision of his deceased brother... and then leaps, merges with Constructicon Maximus's abandoned limbs, and counterattacks. He strikes his fellow guardian in the chest, triggering a huge explosion.

Kicker and Jetfire continue flying into space (where the Unicron orb still exists). Kicker abruptly orders Jetfire to leave him, as he can sense things more clearly when he's alone.

Prime and Galvatron struggle on. Galvatron refuses Optimus's offer to become an Autobot, saying that the power he gained from Unicron is still growing. He explodes his old form, replacing it with one even bigger. Optimus follows suite, vanishing in a flash of light and reappearing in his "Optimus Supreme" form, now with his Prime Force drones attached, without actually having to combine with Omega Supreme to do so.

Jetfire is hesitant to leave Kicker, even with the Energon Saber. Misha contacts him, desperate to join him, but Kicker says he must do it alone. Kicker sends his love and assures her he'll come back, and heads off into space.

Prime and Galvatron are still fighting. As Galvatron begins to gain the upper hand, Optimus uses his Spark of Combination to seize Galvatron's Unicron energy. Both titans disolve, returned to their normal size... and Galvatron realizes Optimus planned this all along.

The Unicron orb still exists.

Galvatron leaves to go destroy Unicron, promising to return for Optimus. The Decepticons follow. The Autobots tend to Prime.

Kicker senses something, and finds what he's looking for: the Unicron orb! The... apple-sized Unicron orb. Kicker realizes that this tiny orb, barely bigger than his fist, is all that remains of Unicron. Kicker is furious at the waste of time, and raises the Energon Saber to destroy the orb, as the watching Alpha Q implores him not to do it.
"I can't explain it, Kicker, but I got a bad feeling something big's about to happen. It's a good thing I powered up. But no matter what happens, we gotta remain calm and cool.<br>
"I hope you know I'm going along with you, Jetfire."
:—With only two episodes left in the series, Jetfire and Kicker struggle to resolve all the critical plot points.

Bruticus Maximus: "The time has come to back our fearless leader."<br>
Constructicon Maximus: "Sorry, Bruticus, but I'm not hanging around with you."<br>
Bruticus Maximus: "So! Are you planning on deserting the great Galvatron?"<br>
Constructicon Maximus: "Stop it, Superion! Since when are you the boss of me? Now run along and find someone who cares!"<br>
Bruticus Maximus: "I suggest we forget our differences and back up Galvatron."<br>
Superion Maximus: "Grrr. Let's DO it!" [attacks]
:—WHAT DO YOU DOING!!!

"Don't worry, Jetfire. I'm not alone. You see, ever since I was a kid, I've felt I had a special purpose. And that's to bring peace, once and for all, to the universe."
:—Kicker isn't one to make small plans.
Other Notes
Lost in Translation
While the dub doesn't openly get anything drastically wrong, its constant mangling of dialogue into stilted nonsense really blunts the basic point of this episode, which is that both Galvatron and Optimus Prime have been overcome by the essence of Unicron, with Unicron having actively taken possession of Galvatron to use as a new body, and Prime having drawn on the power of Unicron that exists within him and all Transformers. Prime's plan is to engage Galvatron in battle on the gamble that the Decepticon leader's hatred of Prime will allow him to overcome Unicron's influence (which it does). The character's eyes switch back and forth from their normal colors to green-tinted, the latter reflecting Unicronian possession (a key moment occurs when Galvatron's eyes turn back to normal, he comments on how much he hates Optimus Prime, and his eyes then turn green again), but it's fairly obvious that the English scriptwriters didn't get this, since the dubbed characters happily yammer on with their own personalities, regardless of what color their eyes are.

* In Super Link, Optimus tells Rodimus that he's being drawn to the same place that Galvatron is. The dub flubs it, having Optimus say "I suspect he's being drawn to the same place we are", as if it's come up before, and as if anyone besides Optimus himself feels the pull of Unicron.
* The point of Kicker and Jetfire's first conversation (dub version quoted above) is supposed to be Kicker announcing that he's going into space. The dub transmogrifies it into random sentences.
* Galvatron's "I loathe you": dub addition.
* Rodimus's "This is insane": dub addition.
* The dub butchers the conversation between the combiners (dub version quoted above.) The gist of it is supposed to be: Bruticus and Construction say they must go help their leader, and therefore have no time for Superion. They then rib Superion, asking if he shouldn't be off saving his own master; Superion says he has no master, and that Prime is his friend. The other two reply that they've never been able to stand that kind of babble, and that at least Galvatron destroyed Superion's brother (providing a tie-in to his appearance later in the episode.)
* Arcee reports that Galvatron and Optimus are heading to Jungle Planet... long after they've already landed there. In Super Link, she reports that they've crashed there.
* Snowcat's inexplicable declaration that "Besides, I wouldn't want to hurt Optimus!" is a dub flub. He's supposed to be saying that he doesn't want to be attacked by the two combatants.
* In Super Link, Superion Maximus makes a comment to the effect of "I'm borrowing these!" as he takes Constructicon Maximus's limbs. The line isn't present in the dub, making the rapidly-animated scene even more confusing.
* In the dub, Optimus says he can't allow Unicron to exist anymore, then very randomly tells Galvatron that he could get out of his predicament by becoming an Autobot. He's supposed to be saying that he will overcome Unicron's power within him, and that Galvatron should be able to do the same, if he's strong-willed enough. Optimus's challenge then angers Galvatron enough for him to break through Unicron's control.
* Kicker's ridiculous "I must bring peace to the universe" speech is supposed to be him saying that he is not alone because he has the wishes of his friends for peace in the universe with him. ...Okay, either way it's a bunch of ridiculous wiffle, but still.
* Kicker isn't mad because his time was wasted; he's mad because... well, y'know. Because it's Unicron.

Pain Count
* "Uh?": 9
* Stock footage: none! Even a combination sequence is actually animated within the context of the scene—maybe a first for the series.
* Listen up: 1
* It's time to: 2
* We've gotta: 1
* Let's do it/this: 3
* Are you serious: 2
* Come on: 2
* That's impossible: 1
* Not if I can help it: 1
* We're counting on you: 1

Animation and/or technical glitches
* The opening pan of Galvatron's giant jet-mode is supposed to be fantastically impressive. Except—rather than actually animate the jet in motion- the animators have dragged a still image of the jet seen from the side across the frame—removing all depth or parallax from the scene and (due to the unfortunate alignment of two yellow sections at that angle) making it almost impossible to figure out what you're actually seeing until they cut to the wide shot.
* Superion Maximus's first line of dialog is, essentially, in Starscream's voice.
* When Superion Maximus steals Constructicon Maximus's limbs to defeat Bruticus Maximus, Superion has Steamhammer's shovel. The weirdness of this is increased by the fact that the character model of Steamhammer as Constructicon Maximus's torso frequently omits the shovel.
*Optimus and Galvatron's cel-animation fight doesn't flow quite as well in Energon as it does in Super Link due to unfinished animation at times.

Continuity errors
* After all this time, just two little laser blasts destroy all four of Superion Maximus's limbs? Why has this never worked before?!?
* When striking the final blow against Bruticus, Superion cries out "Power link!" Shouldn't that be reserved for when he combines with the limbs?

Miscellaneous trivia
* That huge explosion? That's Bruticus Maximus dying. They forgot to mention that.
* A rough surface texturing is used to indicate Galvatron and Optimus's Unicron-empowered inflated sizes, while flashes of green in their eye lighting further indicate the Unicron infection.
* It's not exactly an error, but the fade-cut away from Ironhide and Scorponok charging at each other is strangely abrupt. In Super Link, it's a commercial cut.
* If the "limb" robots of the Maximus combiner teams are actual individuals (with personalities and such), then Superion Maximus's appropriation of Constructicon Maximus's limbs for his own use is a violation of their free will, and quite creepy. ("Fortunately", Energon never shows the limbs in robot mode or suggests they have any personality of their own.)
* Galvatron gets the cel animation upgrade as he shows off his new, even-bigger body. Prime does too a moment later. Can you imagine what that fight would have been like without it?
* How do you defeat Unicron's raw essence? Hit it with a sword!

Synopsis
At dawn, the people of Japan are awakening to do their daily tasks: fishing, going to shrines, and sword practice. Then, the Decepticons show up to cause random trouble.

Devastator and Predaking begin harassing a few fishermen, but are chased off by Broadside. Astrotrain tries to ram a train head on (real smart) only to have the Aerialbots drive him away. Bruticus and Defensor fight it out, when Cyclonus and the Sweeps arrive, but are driven off by Rodimus, Kup, and Sky Lynx. However, instead of thanking the Autobots for saving many lives, the government of Japan is very upset, saying that the Autobots frightened people and ruined business (thankless bipeds). When Marissa Faireborn arrives and brings more problems to Rodimus, the Autobot leader loses patience, transforms, and drives off. Kup explains that Rodimus is merely strained under the burden of command, much like Optimus Prime was in his early days as leader, and Marissa decides to follow him, to let him have someone to talk to.

Meeting up on the highway, however, the two are attacked by Wildrider and Dead End, who knock Marissa into a lake and force Rodimus off a cliff. When they inspect Rodimus, they find the Matrix. Realizing that Galvatron will be really happy, they steal it and return to Chaar. In his throne room, Galvatron inserts the Matrix into his cannon, but instead of making it even more powerful like he had hoped, visions of the Ancient Autobots (including Optimus Prime himself) seep out of the barrel and demand that Galvatron return the Matrix. Galvatron orders Scourge to destroy the Matrix, believing it better to be destroyed if the Decepticons can't have it. Scourge, however, inserts the Matrix into himself, and becomes more powerful... but at a startling price.

Meanwhile, the Autobot leader wakes up, to learn that he's reverted to Hot Rod. Springer and Ultra Magnus argue that they should go after the Decepticons, but Hot Rod feels that the Matrix isn't worth it, and jets off. Real smart idea, Roddy. On Chaar, Scourge challenges Galvatron, defeating him and Cyclonus easily, before leading the Decepticons off to Earth. Galvatron and Cyclonus still function, and set off in pursuit in the Decepticon mothership.

On Earth, Hot Rod, while watching a martial arts class, gets some perspective and some wisdom from the Kendo instructor, and realizes that he needs to get the Matrix back. Meanwhile, Scourge arrives in Japan with his forces, tossing around the Autobots. Broadside tosses him to the ground and he frightens an elderly woman. One of the Kendo students comes to her aid, attacking Scourge with a sword and he begins to chase the pair. He corners them in a blind alley, only for Hot Rod to arrive. Shocked at the changes the Matrix has wrought in Scourge, Hot Rod defeats the Decepticon and reclaims the Matrix, becoming Rodimus Prime once more. Galvatron and Cyclonus find a less powerful, and very frightened, Scourge. And they are none too happy with him...

As the Decepticons retreat, Rodimus realizes that he must deal with his missing part, as have those who came before him. Kup reminds him that no matter who carries the Matrix, he will retain that part forever.
Notes
Animation or technical glitches
* When Rodimus is reverted back to Hot Rod, he's still occasionally drawn using Rodimus Prime's Character model.
* For some reason, the EDC letters on Marissa Faireborne's shoulder has been replaced with "AOC".
* When Galvatron is about to put the Matrix in his cannon, Bruticus and Devastator are shown to be the same size as Galvatron.
* Galvatron's throne changes color and design multiple times throughout one scene.
* When Hot Rod regains the Matrix, he sticks it into his chest without opening a compartment for it.
* In one scene where Optimus Prime is shown among the ancient Autobots, he is colored completely blue.
* Bruticus and Devastator are among the Decepticons present when Galvatron tells Scourge to destroy the Matrix, and they're both about the same size as Wildrider and Dead End.
* The version of this episode on the Shout! Factory DVDs features a glitch with an unstable horizontal line appearing at the top of the picture throughout the episode. The error appears to be on the episode's master copy, as the version included on the Kid Rhino DVDs has the picture slightly zoomed in order to avoid showing the offending line.
* In the Japanese dub of this episode, the Narrator mistakenly identifies Wildrider and Dead End as Runabout and Runamuck.

Continuity errors
* Just before he quits the Autobots, Hot Rod states that "this war has been going on now for a few dozen millennia". Back in "War Dawn", we learned that the Third Cybertronian War started 9 million years ago, which is about 750 dozen millenia... assuming, of course, that we want to take Hot Rod's pointedly off-handed remark as being based on historical accuracy, which is kind of a stretch for a guy who's at the end of his rope and sarcastically railing about "the known universe and its outlying suburbs".

Transformers references
* When Galvatron inserts the Matrix into his cannon, he says "Now, all shall become one, under Galvatron's rule!"
* Optimus Prime is among the Ancient Autobots.
* This episode marks the last apearaence of Springer and Broadside in US continuity.

Trivia
* While the episode order can vary, it's a little funny that the episode about Rodimus finally getting used to being leader of the Autobots was followed by the episode in which Optimus returns to replace him.
* When Scourge starts mutating, at one point it looks like he's... crying?
* Wildrider seems to now have a very bad Southern accent.
* This episode marks the first time in Transformers fiction that the word Slag is used as an insult.
* Isn't it convenient that Scourge launches his attack on Earth in Japan, where the Autobots happen to be located?
* The voice acting for several Japanese characters in this episode employs a very stereotypical Western view of Asian people and their pronunciation of English words.
