Megatron was a young mathematician who lectured at a university on Cybertron. However, he noticed a disturbing trend in the numbers: civil war was certain! His colleagues just called him crazy and laughed it off, but when the maniacal Optimus Prime and his evil army of Autobots took over Cybertron, Megatron had been waiting in the underground, forming a resistance movement to take back Cybertron and keep the Autobots from conquering the universe and plundering it, as they had done to Cybertron.

Fiction
Shattered Glass
There were those who opposed the tyranny of Optimus Prime's merciless Autobots, but they were scattered. But there would come a leader, and Megatron emerged from the city of Polyhex to unite them. After retaking some of Cybertron, Megatron pushed the odds in his favor by inventing the art of transformation and renaming his forces "Decepticons." However, Optimus Prime was able to duplicate this technology, and intended to use it to conquer other worlds.

As Optimus Prime built his Ark for this purpose, Megatron and his inner circle planned to derail Prime's attempts at expansion. During a critical moment, the body of what appeared to be one of Optimus Prime's former lieutenants, Cliffjumper, was discovered by them and brought into their Polyhex stronghold. It was discovered that Cliffjumper had travelled from another universe which mirrored darkly their own. After some misgivings, Cliffjumper agreed to aid them in their assault on the Ark and lent the technology from his glass gas towards the cause. On the battlefield, Prime was enraged that Cliffjumper had double-crossed him, and Megatron took the shot that was meant for the strange traveler. Cliffjumper was finally convinced of where he stood and backed Megatron whole-heartedly, and after destroying the Ark and its launching platform, Megatron critically wounded Prime and called his forces into retreat. Shattered Glass (issue)

Sometime later, Megatron led the defense of the Arch-Ayr fuel dump that the Decepticons had recently rediscovered. He ended up being injured enough to be taken out of the fight, and Starscream fussed over and helped repair him. As the situation started looking dire, Megatron considered destroying the fuel dump to keep it out of Autobot hands. Fortunately, Soundwave called in the Mayhem Suppression Squad right at that moment. Megatron was impressed at the squad's skill in beating back the Autobots, but a bit put off by their... enthusiasm.

When the Dinobots' appearance further disrupted the fight and sent the Autobots packing back to Iacon, the Decepticons discussed the now running-loose Dinobots. Megatron agreed with Dirge's suggestion that they attempt to capture some of them to bolster their own forces. He ordered Starscream to gather a small force of their best mechs and have them commence the "Dinobot Hunt". Dungeons & Dinobots

A short time before the launch of the Autobots' Ark, Megatron flew out to the Temple of Knowledge, believing he had been summoned by Boltax. Instead, it was Ricochet who had lured Megatron into a trap. Ricochet and Nightstick subdued the Decepticon leader. The Autobot Targetmasters hung Megatron over a pit lined with deathtraps and broadcast a ransom to the Decepticons. Ricochet believed that the Decepticons would not follow the Ark into space without Megatron. However, the Decepticons chose to send a small force to rescue him while continuing the preparations for departure. Optimus Prime also arrived, angry with Ricochet's plan. The Decepticon Micromasters distracted the Autobots, allowing Megatron to escape his prison. Megatron snatched up Ricochet's weapon, Nightstick, but Nightstick took control of Megatron's arm. Optimus took advantage of the situation, grabbing Megatron's own weapon Rumbler and charging at Megatron. Megatron turned, though, and Rumbler's sword severed Megatron's wrist, allowing him to regain control of his arm. Rumbler returned to Megatron's side and the Autobots retreated. Do Over
Hyper Mode can be activated by tugging his transparent wing tips outward, which extends the blue sections, raises the upper gray parts of his wings in an "X-wing" configuration, and deploys the red weapons underneath. In robot mode, Rumbler can be attached to either of his arms as a cannon, or it can be flipped around and have a sword attached to the rear of its turret. Like most convention exclusives, the electronics from this accessory have been stripped out to keep costs down.
The rookie of Team Prime, Ironhide had a major case of hero-worship toward both Optimus Prime and Hot Shot. He joined the team in the hopes of earning a Combination Spark.

Optimus Prime paired Ironhide with Kicker, in the hopes that the two would help to keep one another under control. Neither was very happy with the partnership at first, but eventually they became good friends.

Ironhide did manage to earn a Combination Spark after several battles, making him able to powerlink with Jetfire and later, Cliffjumper. Along with several other Autobots, Ironhide was reformatted into a new paint job to fight Unicron.

Ironhide underwent character growth due to the changes taking place in Scorponok, whom he looked up to initially. He would eventually lead a rookie team to their deaths against Scorponok, and nearly kill Scorponok in retaliation. In the end, he and Scorponok fought each other into a stasis. His life was saved when Scorponok carried his damaged body to Optimus Prime on Jungle Planet, in order to merge Ironhide's spark with Optimus Prime. He was restored to life afterward and was last seen with Kicker on Ocean Planet.
During the war, Ironhide was a prisoner, forced to use his technical skills to construct doomsday devices for the Decepticons. Unbeknownst to them, he designed failsafes into the devices, effectively neutralizing them automatically should they ever be activated. Aftershock (issue)

Much later, ten years following Unicron's defeat, Ironhide was added to Optimus' team. He served as chief architect during the construction of the armed cities built for Earth, and successfully managed to avoid being killed by both Scorponok and Megatron.

Timelines
During the Unicron Singularity crisis, Ironhide served aboard the Autobot flagship Iron Hope. He was a member of Ultra Magnus' bridge crew, and briefly questioned Magnus' decision to leave the imperiled crew of the Spanner to their own devices. He was called into action during a Decepticon attack on the ship, and battled a number of Divebomb- and Insecticon-type Terrorcons alongside RipTide, Smokescreen and the Land Military Mini-Con Team. Force of Habit
:The Japanese release, named Roadbuster, had some minor deco and colour differences; most significantly, the tan plastic parts were replaced by grey, even though they remained tan in the Energon cartoon.

* Ironhide (Mega, 2004)
** Japanese ID number: SC-04
** Accessries: Missile

:Ironhide transforms into a blue sports utility vehicle of undetermined model, with a rather oversized red speaker/gun turret/high beam lights/thingamajig setup mounted on top. In robot mode, he is able to combine with most Autobot Deluxe and Mega size class toys, forming the top or bottom half of a super robot. In both modes, his turret fires a spring-loaded missile.

:The Japanese release, named Roadbuster, had some minor deco and colour differences; most significantly, the tan plastic parts were replaced by grey, even though they remained tan in the Energon cartoon. The major functional difference between the two toys is that the Japanese version does not have electronics, while the US release does, with sound effects activated by launching the missile.

:Ironhide became a major shelfwarmer during the Energon toy line's run, with some areas still having unsold Ironhides into 2006.

* Energon Ironhide (Mega, 2004)
** Japanese ID number: SC-24
** Accessories: Missile, energon axe (crane & split-tire, Japanese release only)

:This redeco of Ironhide was intended to be an homage to G1 Hound, with green replacing the blue and blue replacing the red. He also features an army star logo similar to Hound's.

:The Japanese release, named "Roadbuster Wild", included an orange version of Strongarm's Energon Axe and, again, has no electronics.
:This toy was exclusive to the McDonald's restaurant chain in the Netherlands, Australia, Bulgaria and the United Kingdom. He is a highly simplified version of the larger toy, with little to no articulation.

:His torso is hollow and stores a translucent energon cube. When a button is pushed, his energon cube activates the coolest siren and laser sounds. His Energon cube is interchangeable with the cubes from the other McDonald's Energon toys.
Trivia
* In Japan, Ironhide's Bio and Tech Spec function was listed as "Martial Artist" (武闘家). Uh... huh?
* In the cartoon series, [[kibble]Ironhide's head is visible in vehicle mode].
