Instead of regular human facial features, some Transformers have what looks like a plate affixed to their lower jaw, usually covering up to their nose. While no official name exists for these, they are usually called mouthplates ' or faceplates (despite a 'regular' face once being described as a faceplate in the TV series). Two of the most famous examples are those of Generation 1's Optimus Prime and Soundwave.

In earlier series, a Transformer's mouthplate moved when they spoke, as if there were a working jaw underneath. In Robots in Disguise and the Unicron Trilogy, however, it remains static.

Fiction/Toylines
Generation 1
Optimus Prime featured a prominent mouthplate in both cartoon and toy form (as do all other G1-based toyline versions). The 20th Anniversary figure featured a mouthplate that was movable via a button on the back of his head that slightly lowered the spring-supported mouthplate to recreate the talking action seen in the cartoons.

Soundwave had a similar mouthplate, but no apparent nose (whether any of his assumed face is visible or not is debatable, considering how visor-esque his eyes are). Like Optimus, both his cartoon and toy form had the mask. No toys have yet been made with a moving mask feature.

Wheeljack's mouthplate was unique in that it was fixed, even in the cartoon. Instead of a movable mouthplate, you knew Wheeljack was speaking because his "ears" flashed.

Many early toys had mouthplates that were simply disregarded in favor of mouths in fictional appearances (barring the occasional toy-accurate rendering). Bumblebee in particular had a mask in toy form, but not in cartoon or comic form. A rare reissue of the toy features a cartoon-accurate face, however, as do most toys of him since. Conversely, as Goldbug, he featured a mask in both cartoon and toy form.

On the other hand, Superion has a faceplate on the cartoon even though his toy has a mouth.

Ultra Magnus in his newly reborn body from the Japanese continuity also feature a mouthplate.Hybrid Style Convoy Black Version

Hot Spot sometimes has a mouthplate and sometimes he doesn't.

Beast Wars
Optimus Primal was shown to have a mouthplate which would slide into place when he entered battle. This was used to reconcile the presence of an actual mouth on his animation model with the lack thereof on his toy. Later retoolings of the toy reflected the animation model.

Cybertron
The Optimus Prime animation model displays a similar setup to Optimus Primal, with a mouthplate that slides into place when entering Super Mode. However in this case the toy reflects this, featuring a gimmick that allows the face to display either configuration.

Dreamwave comics continuity
In The War Within, Bumblebee was depicted as having a removable face mask with mouthplate that resembled the original sculpt of his toy. In The Dark Ages, Jetfire was given a similar treatment with a flip-up faceguard. The Titanium Series release of this character design featured the faceguard, but it was not removable. Brawn was depicted with a removable face mask like Bumblebee's in the ongoing Generation 1 series.

IDW comics continuity
In Stormbringer, Jetfire has a removable mask with mouthplate as part of his battle gear. This feature was included in the Classics toy of this character design.
Most recently in All Hail Megatron, Optimus Prime himself revealed he has a retractable mouthplate much like his Movie counterpart. This would be the first time in an official story that the G1 version of the character is portrayed as being able to remove his mouthplate, revealing that he does have a mouth underneath it (which he uses to eat some energon).

Live-action Transformers movies
Optimus Prime is depicted as having a combat mouthplate which closes over his normal mouth to protect his face. To date, only one of Prime's three Robot Heroes figurines displays his face and mouth, while all other merchandise features the plate. Blackout also has a mouthplate, seen very briefly. Bumblebee has two pieces that rest on the top of his head normally but slide down and clamp together over his whole face in battle. Bumblebee's faceplate has a very insectoid appearance, crediting his name. Jazz has a visor that protects his upper-face in combat.

In Revenge of the Fallen Optimus Prime's faceplate is smashed to pieces when he is kicked in the face by Megatron, but it is replaced when he combines with Jetfire. While not noticeable in the film, Sideswipe's Human Alliance toy confirms he has an extra layer of armor plating (which was thought to be his actual face) protecting his main face.

Transformers Animated
Most of the Autobots in Optimus Prime's crew have retractable faceplates. Optimus, Bumblebee, Bulkhead, Sari and Prowl each have one. Sentinel Prime has one, too, though his is unique in that it covers his whole face. Among the Decepticons, Soundwave has a non-retractable mouthplate, much like his G1 predecessor's. Optimus' mouthplate flaps up and down when he talks, just like that of G1 Optimus, but none of the others' do.

Trivia
* Fan commentator Zobovor nicknamed these distinctive items "woobers" (crediting the term to a younger relative), and the name became popular with some fans.
* Both the Armada Optimus Prime and the 20th Anniversary Optimus Prime toys have mouthplates that can move up and down when a button located on their heads is depressed, even though Armada Prime's mouthplate never moved in the series itself. Additionally, the 20th Anniversary toy has teeth (or possibly a speaker grille) hidden behind the mouthplate, in reference to Optimus Prime's battle-damaged appearance in the Generation 2 comics, though this detail cannot be seen without disassembling the entire head (or just looking down with it pulled down really far).
* The lack of a full-time mouthplate on certain characters has, in the past, been known to result in certain reactions from the fandom. Oh well.

Synopsis
The Maximals have set up a system to keep their orchard supplied with the organic goo provided by Cybertron, and are holding a memorial service for Rhinox, unaware that they're being spied on by Tankor. Tankor is also spying on Megatron, who asks Jetstorm and Thrust what happened to the third of his Vehicon generals prior to his apparent death. The Diagnostic Drone informs Megatron about the discovery of the Key to Vector Sigma, and the (decoy) Tankor's subsequent overloading while using it. The Drone suggests attaching copies of the Key to the drones and using them to purge Cybertron of all organic matter. When Megatron asks what it'll do to his beast mode, the Drone says it will be eliminated, and inadvertently begins to repeat Tankor's ramblings about how it will also drive Megatron mad, before covering his blunder. Although suspicious, Megatron orders the key be attached to Aero and cycle drones and tested on a Maximal, much to Tankor's annoyance.

Rattrap uses the ancient computers to run a planet-wide search for more organic goop, but is interrupted by Blackarachnia, who needs the goo herself to try to turn Thrust back into Silverbolt. Rattrap reluctantly lets her take the sample.

Meanwhile, the Diagnostic Drone is taking Jetstorm and Thrust on a wild goose chase on Tankor's orders. Tankor intends to give Megatron a change of heart.

Rattrap has had some measure of success, turning up a catalyst program. He returns to the orchard, where the catalyst dramatically increases the plant-growth, and he's carried into the air by vines. Optimus, Nightscream and Cheetor turn up to rescue him from the clutches of the plantlife.

Blackarachnia locates the searching Vehicons and attacks, seizing Thrust and carrying him off. The Aero drones zap her web line with the keys they're carrying, and she's forced to detach, falling to the ground.

Optimus tells Rattrap to try his experiments on a small scale next time, but the other Maximals think he's wrong and that the fast-growing vines would be a great weapon against Megatron. Optimus goes to commune with the Oracle while the others clear up.

Up in the city, Blackarachnia knocks out Jetstorm and the Diagnostic Drone before leading Thrust to a more secluded location where she traps him in a web. Dosed with goo, Thrust reverts to his old personality—Waspinator. Waspinator explains that he got bored on prehistoric Earth and flew back to Cybertron. Blackarachnia is more than a little disappointed that he's not Silverbolt, but they're interrupted by Jetstorm, who knocks the container of goo from Blackarachnia's hand and is dosed with it. Jetstorm's old personality comes out, and this time it's Silverbolt.

Rattrap admits to Cheetor and Nightscream what the spider's up to. Nightscream volunteers to get Optimus, but Cheetor has other plans. Optimus, meanwhile, is having problems accessing the Oracle.

Silverbolt and Waspinator fight over Blackarachnia, but they're interrupted by the arrival of aero and motorcycle drones, which neither Vehicon realises they can control. The power of the Keys eliminates the goo, reverting Thrust and Jetstorm to their normal selves, and they order the drones to close in. Fortunately the other three Maximals burst in riding a giant vine, and pick up Blackarachnia, whisking her away to safety.

Diagnostic Drone reports failure to Megatron, but he's been monitoring the situation anyway. The drones zap the huge vine with their keys, changing it to technomatter. The Maximals leap off before they're infected, but Rattrap announces they have to sever the vines to stop the infection spreading to the orchid and Cybertron's organic core. They race alongside the vine, chasing the infection until it reaches the orchid. Optimus spots the problem and frantically begins breaking vines. He succeeds, and rounds on Cheetor for disobeying orders, before informing him that he believes the Oracle has been tampered with.

Tankor, through the Diagnostic Drone, convinces Megatron to load the Key into all of the tank drones, and muses to himself that it's all thanks to the catalyst program he let Rattrap find.
Notes
Technical/animation glitches
*During Megatron's conversation with the Diagnositc Drone at the beginning of the episode, his scar switches several times between his left and right eyes.

Continuity errors
* Silverbolt and Waspinator seem unaware that they are in Vehicon bodies with drones at their command. This is odd, considering that Rhinox was fully aware (or so he claims) within the body of Tankor, and even more so when Silverbolt feels guilt when he finally returns to the Maximal fold (although these can both be chalked up to the Maximals tampering with their respective programming). Even a few seconds before Waspinator acts oblivious to his command over the drones, he confesses "Chickbots dig brooding, loner bit!", acknowledging his role as Thrust. Huh?

Transformers references
* Silverbolt and Waspinator's Beast Wars personalities emerge in this episode, albeit for a few minutes.

Real-world references
* None identified as of yet.

Trivia
* It seems unusual that Megatron would threaten the Diagnostic Drone with a spark extractor, seeing as how it doesn't have a spark to begin with.
* Palm tree is the most ecological way to time-travel.
* So Waspinator was able to break through Vehicon programming when facing Blackarachnia but Silverbolt either never was or just didn't, and he never did later even when his true love was directly appealing to him. This raises worrying questions about either Waspinator or Silverbolt, especially the latter as he'll later admit how much he loved being a murderous villain...

*During Megatron's conversation with the Diagnositc Drone at the beginning of the episode, his scar switches several times between his left and right eye.

Synopsis
Megatron has raised the Nemesis from its watery grave and has begun a random attack on everything in sight, all the while quoting the Covenant of Primus. After telling Rhinox to "deploy Operation Eternity", Optimus Primal and Tigerhawk attempt to fight it off, but their weapons don't even scratch the hull. Tigerhawk tells Primal to rally the Maximals and that he will remain to fight. On the Nemesis, Dinobot is commenting that his spark has changed and feels complete. Aspects of the original Dinobot begin to emerge. He admires Tigerhawk's defense. Tigerhawk is able to damage power on several decks, limiting Megatron's offensive options to using the fusion cannon, which he uses to destroy Tigerhawk. Going to the Protohuman settlement, Megatron prepares to destroy it. Dinobot objects, asking where the honor is in such an act, but Megatron fires anyway, killing Inferno and Quickstrike in the process.

At Mount St. Hilary, the Maximals are preparing a last-ditch strategy—bring the Ark online and fight the Nemesis. However, the ship has been offline too long, and Rhinox and Blackarachnia are having trouble restoring power. The Nemesis arrives, but Tigerhawk's attack has depleted its energon reserves, and the fusion cannon requires time to recharge. Megatron activates its tractor beam, and Primal enters the Nemesis. He and Megatron duke it out, but the Predacon clearly has the advantage. On the Ark, the Maximals manage to get the engines on line, but they burn out almost instantly. Rattrap proclaims that they are all going to die, and for once, no one tells him to shut up.

However, Dinobot, disapproving of Megatron's actions, sends a message to the Maximals of an Autobot shuttle stored in the Ark. Megatron orders Dinobot to fire, but he refuses, stating that he has his honor. In a last bid to save them all, Rhinox pilots the shuttle on a collision course with the Nemesis bridge, crashing through the viewport and going out the other side. Optimus urges Dinobot to save himself, but he remains with the ship, biding farewell to Primal. As the Nemesis crashes, Primal rejoins the Maximals.

Some time later, the Maximals, having repaired the shuttle and rigged a transwarp cell to it, leave Earth for Cybertron. Optimus, piloting the ship, declares that the Beast Wars are over, and memorializes the Maximals who fell during the war. Rattrap, however, is more happy to be going home and points out that they won't have to see Megatron 'til they get there, as the Predacon is tied to the hull of their shuttle. As the shuttle enters transwarp, the scene shifts to the Protohumans, who have built a village and are using parts of Inferno and Quickstrike in a ritual to celebrate their new leader...Waspinator.

In the ultimate act of karma, Waspinator declares that he is "happy at last."
Notes
*Kid Rhino's Season 3 box set contains an animatic with additional footage cut out from the final episode (presumably to save time). One of the edits shows Optimus Primal tearing out a transwarp cell from the Nemesiss control deck prior to telling Dinobot II to save himself. The transwarp cell is later seen towards the end of the (finished) episode, installed to the controls of the Autobot shuttle, explaining how the Maximals were able to travel through both space and time and return home.
*In an interview, Furman stated he was approached at BotCon 1998 to write a "G1-centric" episode, and worked closely with Bob Forward on what would become "Nemesis" (they originally weren't sure who'd write which part). Various ideas were pitched, but for reasons of budget and a lack of a fourth season meant everything needed to be wrapped up here; one key decision was to ensure the core cast "got a good send off, one that didn't leave them in limbo". Bob would do most of the Dinobot 2 writing.
*In the early plot of the episode, the Maximals successfully launched the Ark instead of an Autobot shuttle. Also, Dirge, Ramjet and Thrust would be reactivated and ram into the Nemesis instead of the Autobot shuttle. This would have possibly explained where the three Coneheads came from when they suddenly appeared in season two of the original cartoon. This is one of the more popular reasons as to why writer Simon Furman included Dirge as a Herald of Unicron in Worlds Collide.
*It should be noted that had Megatron heeded Dinobot and not turned the fusion cannon on the proto-human colony, he would have most likely won the Beast Wars, by the simple fact that it would have been fully charged by the time the Nemesis reached the Ark (As pointed out by Dinobot, the fusion cannon's reactor was depleted to 70% power when they had arrived) without the Maximals having a chance to prepare in time. In retrospect, this could be why he makes such a big deal about displaying honor later on...

Technical/animation glitches
*As Tigerhawk is about to be overwhelmed by the fusion cannon, it cuts to a reaction shot by Dinobot, whose "monocle" is on the wrong eye.
*When Optimus returns to the Maximal base and tries to communicate with Tigerhawk, his right wing is missing.
*At one point, Optimus tears his wing off and tosses it to jam the giant grinder mechanisms on the bottom of the Nemesis. However, in the next scene in which he appears, his wing has been replaced with no explanation.
*As the Maximals await their doom inside the Ark and Rattrap comments on how they're "all gonna die", he's missing his robot-mode "backpack".
*Megatron apparently transforms to dragon mode off-screen, transforms back to robot mode on-screen before the scene cuts away, then when next we see him, he is in dragon mode again!
*For most of the episode, Optimus is missing the "blast shields" that he usually wears on either his forearms or shoulders.
* In the final battle scene, Dinobot is flipped horizontally. (See first glitch.)

Continuity errors
*Although it was cut from the final episode for time, the script called for Generation 1 Megatron's spark to be removed from BW Megatron and placed back in its proper body before the Maximals leave Earth. This very brief scene was animated, and a clip of it can be seen on BWTF.com's page for the episode. The clip was also included on Kid Rhino's Beast Wars Season 3 box set. It should be noted, however, that despite the cut, Optimus's lines from that segment were still included in the episode, albeit used in a different context.
*In Other Victories, Megatron is perplexed by the idea of Tarantulas trying to destroy the Ark and Tigerhawk states that doing so would erase those descended from Autobots and Decepticons. So why is Megatron doing it now? Considering his religious babbling, it comes off like he thinks it'll erase everyone but him...
*It seems unlikely that the Maximals would leave a Predacon on Earth, even one as incompetent as Waspinator, but maybe they just didn't know he was still alive.
*The Nemesis crashes fairly close to the Ark, but in the G1 episode "Microbots" it's found in South America, thousands of miles away from the Ark. Of course, this isn't the first time that Beast Wars has had problems with geography.

Transformers references
*There is the Nemesis itself.
*"In the darkest hour, there will be a light," a line from the Covenant of Primus most likely derived from "Light our darkest hour" in The Transformers: The Movie.
*Speaking of that movie, Primal's declaration of "This has to stop! At any cost" mirrors Optimus Prime's declaration of "Megatron must be stopped! No matter the cost".

Real-world references
*The lines Megatron reads from the Covenant of Primus bear some similarities to lines from English translations of the Bible of Earth's humans.
*One of Megatron's Convenant of Primus quotes bears stronger resemblance to the paraphrase of Ezekiel 25:17 in the film Pulp Fiction than it does to the original Bible quote.

"You have already read the Covenant of Primus?"<br />
"Quickly, go to your fellow Maximals. Prepare them! If Megatron destroys the Ark and its occupants, history as we know it will unravel."<br />
"You can't stop that thing alone."<br />

Synopsis
Primal checks on Cheetor, who is napping after he collapsed in front of the Maximals' current base, heavily damaged from the fight with the Predacons. After making sure Cheetor's okay, Primal has a discussion with Rattrap, mentioning that Cheetor has refused to use the CR Chamber. Rattrap figures he wants to prove something, but Optimus is suspicious. He decides to discuss it with Cheetor in the morning, while Rattrap decides to take a little rat nap.

Cheetor doesn't sleep soundly, though. From the cat's chest, a strange appendage grows, and Cheetor dreams of himself revealed to (and reviled by) the other Maximals (except Optimus) as an ugly, mutated monstrosity. Cheetor awakens, glad his dream was unreal, but finds himself caught in a green light expanding out of his spark.

Rattrap, awakened by the noise, heads to the lower level to see what's wrong. Before he reaches Cheetor's room, a large cat monster bursts out of it and knocks Rattrap over, then rushes away. Optimus comes to help Rattrap, who (incorrectly) assumes that the big ugly monster has gotten Cheetor.

In the Predacon base, Megatron hears the roar of the roaming beast and checks the radar. He figures out that Cheetor has been upgraded, explaining who his nemesis from the most recent battle was. Waspinator is sent to capture the cat-bot.

Silverbolt returns to the Maximals' base, having failed to locate Cheetor (and jealous of Blackarachnia's concern for the feline). Having already surmised what is going on, Optimus confronts Depth Charge, and forces an account of the relevant events out of him. Depth Charge explains that Cheetor removed some device from the Predacon machine, but was caught in the overload. Depth Charge also says that he destroyed the transmetal driver.

Awakening in a cave, Cheetor finds himself back in his usual Transmetal form again, completely repaired, but with fragmented, disturbing memories of what happened the previous night. Later, Dinobot and Waspinator find the cave, and after shredding Waspinator, Dinobot proceeds to hunt the Maximal. But inside the cave, he finds Cheetor has already left.

Again, Cheetor shows up outside the Maximal base. He tries to explain that he's taken care of "the monster". Optimus, being less gullible than Cheetor is clever, indicates he wants Cheetor to take him to the creature's remains. Away from the other Maximals, Primal and Cheetor talk, but before Cheetor can admit the truth, Primal's chest is fried by Dinobot.

The emotional stress of Cheetor's concern tears the cat back into his Transmetal 2 form, and he easily blasts away Waspinator away. The two Transmetals 2 duel with each other, slashing each other in their beast modes. When Rattrap and Silverbolt arrive, Dinobot is smart enough to retreat.

Optimus reaches out to the feral Cheetor, coaxing him back to his senses. Back at the Maximal base, Cheetor tries to keep his cool while he flirts with Blackarachnia. Cheetor misinterprets her affection as something personal, when really she's more interested in his technology—and how she can get some of it for herself.

Notes
*It's pretty stupid of the Maximals not to realize that the robot cat that came from Cheetor's room actually is Cheetor.

Real-world references
*In response to a threat from Dinobot II, Cheetor says, "I don't think so." While perhaps not an intentional reference, that was something of a catchphrase for Bob on Mainframe Entertainment's ReBoot. Ian James Corlett (Cheetor) voiced the character during its third and fourth seasons.

Transformers references
*Back in "Call of the Wild", the Maximals were driven feral while in their beast modes, just as Cheetor is here.

Trivia
*The contents of Cheetor's room:
** A photo of himself and Primal from the first season.
** A big trophy with a Predacon insignia on the base.
** A model of solar system with haphazardly-orbiting planets.
** What could possibly be a model of a Cybertronian city.
** A photo of Blackarachnia.
** A potted plant.
** Three spare tail-clubs.
** A miniature model of the Axalon.
** A clock with a kind of holographic display to indicate the stages of a Solar cycle.
** A model Douglas DC-3.
*During Cheetor's nightmare, after Blackarachnia says "it's hideous," Rattrap makes motions as though he's going to puke.
*Megatron's observation that Cheetor is moving at Mach 2 seems a bit absurd. Yes, turning Transmetal 2 is portrayed as one heck of an upgrade and Cheetor has a rocket on his back, but a quadruped running at that speed is still fairly ridiculous.
*Waspinator was able to find Cheetor, while Silverbolt didn't. So Waspinator is a better tracker than Silverbolt? More likely, Megatron's scan of Cheetor's "moonlight stroll" narrowed the search zone, whereas the Maximals had no information about his trajectory.
*Cybertronix
**The text under Rattrap's monitors is mirrored at first, but doesn't say anything particular notable.
**Unsurprisingly, the text which flashes briefly on Megatron's monitor when he asks for magnification says "MAGNIFY".
Synopsis
Somewhere in the vast universe, two entities are discussing the experiment on "Nexus Earth". Though the project was "sterilized", there remains a threat. The entities then reveal Tigatron and Airazor, then merge their bodies together, creating a new Transformer. The aliens inhabit the body and depart in a ball of energy, while two sparks follow.

At the Predacon base, the Predacons are holding a "trial" for Quickstrike. Waspinator is the "defense", Dinobot and Rampage are the jury, Inferno is taking the minutes, and Megatron is the judge, not to mention the fact that he's all dressed up for the occasion. Quickstrike begs for mercy, saying he doesn't know what Tarantulas's intentions for destroying the Ark were, but offers to hunt him down for Megatron. Suddenly, the sensors detect an energy surge on a ballistic approach for the base. Tarantulas and Rhinox both detect the surge as well and recognize that it can only be one thing.

The aliens are back.

The Predacons' automated defenses are ineffective against the anomaly, and Megatron orders them to abandon the base. Making contact, the energy ball destroys the Predacon ship instantly. Optimus Primal heads for the base, fearing that the spark of the original Megatron may have been destroyed, and sends Cheetor to assist.

From the ashes of the Predacon base, the alien Transformer appears and introduces himself as Tigerhawk, emissary of the Vok. He dispatches the other Predacons with ease, then sentences Megatron to death for his interference with the timestream. The two battle, but Tigerhawk is victorious. During the fight, Cheetor is incapacitated. As Tigerhawk prepares the killing blow, Optimus arrives. Tigerhawk greets him in a friendly manner, but asks him not to interfere. Optimus tries to explain Megatron's situation, but is entombed in the earth for his efforts. However, Tigerhawk is attacked by Tarantulas's spider drones, which allows Tarantulas to drag him to his lair. Meanwhile, an unconscious Cheetor dreams that he is visited by the sparks of Tigatron and Airazor, who fuse together before he is attacked by the two Vok seen in the beginning of the episode. He wakes up to see the fused spark, which guides him to the lair and the emissary.

At the lair, Tigerhawk revives and claims to know Tarantulas. The mad scientist states that he intends to use Tigerhawk to destroy the Maximals while he detonates the Ark. He also reveals why he wants to destroy it: Tarantulas and the Tripredacus Council are not descendants of the Autobots and the Decepticons, but have "other origins". This would allow them to control Cybertron and conquer the universe. Cheetor jumps in around this time and looks on amazed at the scene. As Tarantulas activates the deprogramming device, the two Vok entities emerge from Tigerhawk's mouth and enter him. The device then shoots a bolt of energy at Tarantulas, which throws him into a nearby Energon crystal. The crystal detonates, destroying Tarantulas and the two aliens in a freakish yet totally hardcore manner. Cheetor manages to drag Tigerhawk out, but is knocked unconscious when the lair explodes.

Optimus locates Cheetor and Tigerhawk as the merged sparks of Tigatron and Airazor enter the emissary. Welcoming their old friends and new friend back, the Maximals depart for home…as Megatron watches on.

Notes
* Cheetor has his last of four strange dreams in this episode, wherein Airazor and Tigatron appear to him and fuse together before his eyes. When he wakes up, he sees and follows the new joint spark over the landscape. He also sees the Vok in this dream before he sees them in real life, perhaps because Tigerhawk shows him or perhaps precognitive.
* Not only is this the first time that Airazor and Tigatron have appeared since being abducted in "Other Visits," it's the first time they've even been mentioned by other characters. Some friends the Maximals are.
* In the comics continuity, Tarantulas survives this encounter and really used it as a means to absorb the Vok. That makes the fact that this super genius character idiotically killed himself by repeatedly blasting his death ray machine thing until it turned around and killed him... a little easier to swallow.
* This episode really wants you to buy a Tigerhawk toy. Can you tell?

Continuity errors
*Despite being described as having "different origins" than being Decepticon descendants, in "The Agenda," the Tripredacus Council specifically refer to the Decepticons as being their ancestors while talking in private to themselves. Bit of a glaring retcon there. (We could be charitable and assume they meant the Decepticon-born Cybertronian Empire.)
*Considering at least some time has passed since the last episode, there's no logical explanation for why no one had bothered to explain to Rattrap that Megatron now had the original Megatron's spark and thus why he needed it explained to him in this episode. Nor has Rattrap been portrayed as anything but intelligent up until this point so that he'd need this explained to him a second time if we're to assume they did tell him and he just... forgot. This was likely only done to serve as exposition for the audience.

Technical/animation glitches
*During one shot as the Predacons are scrambling to battle stations before Tigerhawk arrives, Megatron's eyes are green instead of red.
*During one shot as the Predacons open fire on Tigerhawk, Dinobot II fires a green beam instead of a red one.

Transformers references
*The Nemesis is seen on Tarantulas's computer. It would have significance in the series finale.

Real-world references
* As the Vok approach Tarantulas, he attempts to ward them off by forming a crucifix with his fingers, a sacred item often used to ward off vampires in folklore.
* During Quickstrike's court-martial, Megatron wears a barrister's wig like those worn by British attorneys and judges. Inferno acts as stenographer (complete with typewriter).
Others are soon to discover that his seemingly benign tic is merely the gateway to a frighteningly twisted and perverse mind, even for a Decepticon, Decepticon. The mercenary Insecticons landed on earth in their own space pod before the Ark crashed to Earth. (It is unclear whether this pod was launched from the Nemesis or not, as the dialogue seems to suggest maybe it was, but the Insecticons and Megatron's Decepticons do not seem to know each other.) Their pod crashed into the region that would become known as "Demon Swamp" and their idento-computers adapted them to transform into insects and eat organic food to survive. Though they were largely communal, Shrapnel was a leader among then, usually alternating with Bombshell (Kickback was out of luck). The "Insecticons" apparently lived in the swamp for millions of years until discovered by Megatron's Decepticons. They form an uneasy alliance with Megatron, never coming fully under his command but working with the Decepticons when they could be convinced there was something (usually food) in it for them. A Plague of Insecticons

The Insecticons were able to create vast clone armies of themselves at will, a formidable ability that may have been the reason they were able to maintain their autonomy from Megatron. They would use this ability once to create the Insecticon Army which early devastated the planet Earth but they were destroyed by the Morphobots. Quest for Survival Even before this, they were shown to be very duplicitous and often betrayed Megatron or disobeyed him.
He would later be tracked, tracked, by the combined Autobots and Decepticons after which he relinquished the controls. The Revenge of Bruticus
Shrapnel, along with his Insecticon colleagues, attacked Autobot City on Earth, where he was badly damaged and dumped into space from Astrotrain. His floating body would be reformatted by Unicron into one of Galvatron's minions. But that didn't stop him from showing up later on Junkion and threatening Daniel. The Transformers: The Movie He also somehow appeared on Chaar after the Decepticons' defeat to nibble on some energon cubes Five Faces of Darkness, Part 1, and he tried to stop Sky Lynx from returning Metroplex's transformation cog. Five Faces of Darkness, Part 5 Much later, Soundwave briefly spoke using Shrapnel's voice and speech pattern for no reason. Fight or Flee

Marvel Comics continuity
noteukonly
Shrapnel was one of the top lieutenants of Lord Straxus at Darkmount on Cybertron, acting as his Executive Officer and supervising both the technicians that translated Soundwave's message from Earth & assisting on the Space Bridge project. He was also was responsible for capturing Autobot spy Scrounge before he could report back on the whereabouts of Spanner. Despite his rank, Straxus used Shrapnel's face as a stress ball when things went wrong The Smelting Pool! and was willing to send him on a suicidal janitorial mission once simply out of petty spite, but Shrapnel managed to talk his way out of it. The Bridge to Nowhere!

In addition to his high rank, he was one of the most feared and dangerous killers on Cybertron, a key target for the Autobot resistance. The rebel plan Operation: Volcano was kicked off when Shrapnel tortured the information of a (fake) rebel meeting out of an informant, but was ruined by Megatron calling the Insecticons to Earth. (Yes, they were called Insecticons and had insect-like alt forms on a planet with NO INSECT LIFE.) Target: 2006 Shrapnel arrived on Earth to play a key role in the Hoover Dam battle, and afterwards served on Earth under Megatron permanently. Aerialbots over America!

Then he served under Shockwave, Ratbat, possibly Scorponok, Bludgeon, Megatron again... all while doing absolutely nothing of note besides being uncommonly easy to spot in crowd shots. He may have been killed by the Underbase-powered Starscream, or alternatively he could've just been really lazy and not gotten involved with things—he's one of Cybertron's deadliest killers, what does he have to prove?

Earthforce
earthforcefiction
Shrapnel and his Insecticon buddies served under Megatron in the Decepticon Civil War, but their spying mission against Shockwave was foiled by Starscream. Shrapnel got in a good electrified shot at Starscream's bum first, but then he caught them in a rustbug hoop. The treacherous Seeker then drafted them into helping him set up a clash between the two leaders. Bugged!

Beast Wars
While temporarily out of his mind (Well, more than usual, anyway), the Predacon Waspinator believed himself to actually be Shrapnel, and adopted his mannerisms and speech pattern, pattern. Dark Designs (episode)

Dreamwave comics continuity
Shrapnel was part of an assassination unit alongside Kickback, Bombshell, Soundwave and Ravage shortly after the rise of Optimus Prime. He and his partners were assigned to eliminate the new Prime, steal the Matrix, and bring it to Megatron so that he could turn Cybertron into a cosmic dreadnought and conquer the universe. Spoiler alert—it didn't work. The War Within During the Dark Ages after Megatron's disappearance, Shrapnel served with the main Decepticon faction under Shockwave's command. One time Slag sucker-punched him so hard, Shrapnel's colors went wrong. Conflagration

Shrapnel was part of a unit sent to Earth by Shockwave to guide the planet's development and prepare it for invasion. They were beaten up by the Dynobots on arrival, then played dead until Grimlock got bored and wandered off. The Rules of Extinction

Millions of years later, they were discovered by both the EDC and Autobots after kidnapping an entire town. Over the preceding few thousand vorns, Shrapnel had apparently lost control of the Insecticons unit, with Bombshell gathering more and more power for himself without Shrapnel even recognizing it. Kickback pointed this out, but the Autobot incursion prevented the conversation from going any farther. Shrapnel was last seen getting a building dropped on him by Sideswipe. Extermination
As part of Serpent O.R.'s forces, Shrapnel defended the newly unified Decepticon army's base against a combined Autobot/G.I. Joe strike force. The Art of War issue 5
IDW Hearts of Steel continuity
Shrapnel, Kickback, and Bombshell robbed a train carrying cash and bullion from the Denver Mint, on Starscream's orders. They delivered the stolen property to Starscream and Tobias Muldoon the following morning.

Shrapnel forms one end of the "Insectrain" (as it is called in the concept art); the back end, in its one appearance. He has huge scissor blades mounted to destroy other trains on the railway. He speaks perfectly normally. Hearts of Steel issue 2

: Shrapnel transforms into a robotic stag beetle. He doesn't do a whole lot more than that. Like the other Insecticons, he has a variation on his chromed parts, but this one is on his gun. Some Shrapnels have "fins" on the very back-end of the rifle and a more detailed main barrel, while others (obviously) lack those details. The extra-detail versions appear to be a later run.

: In Japan, Shrapnel and the other Insecticons were "re-released" as mail-order items from 1987 through 1988. They each cost 880 yen (their normal retail price) and two Robot Points.
Trivia
* Shrapnel—like the other Insecticons—was originally a Diaclone "Waruder" evil-alien-piloted mech in different colors... which were eventually used when the trio were redecoed for e-Hobby release. Specifically, Shrapnel was the Kuwagattler (or Kuwagatra) mecha. This is also the genesis of those opening chest compartments.
* In the cartoon, Shrapnel was often shown as something of a leader among the Insecticons, while Venom is the official leader in other portions of Generation 1.
* Shrapnel's alt mode is devoid of wings yet he still manages to fly while transformed as an insect.
* In The Transformers: The Movie, this guy got shot by Blitzwing (thanks to Kup), knocked into a moat by Hot Rod, AND run over by Optimus Prime. THEN he proceeded to get THROWN INTO SPACE by his fellow Decepticons. Poor guy sure had an off-day.
* Shrapnel, along with Starscream, had his gender switched from male to female in the French dub of The Transformers: The Movie. It is unknown why this change was effected, but it's most likely because of the character's high-pitched voice. The change did not happen in the cartoon, as it had used a different dubbing team from the movie. The change is especially ironic, given that only male stag beetles have the large pincers of Shrapnel's alt-mode.
