Ultra Magnus
:Ultra Magnus is an Autobot from the Transformers Animated continuity family.

Wise, powerful, and utterly committed to keeping the peace of Cybertron at any cost, Ultra Magnus is the Magnus and Supreme Commander of the Autobots and the leader of the Cybertron Elite Guard. A veteran of the Great War, Magnus is exceptionally straightforward in his dealings on every level. He makes no bones about some of the questionable projects he's enacted in order to counter the threat of the more heavily-armed Decepticons, and doles out both praise and admonishments to his subordinates without hesitation. Magnus may not be the most likable bot around, but he is completely honest at every level.

Magnus is no slouch when it comes to combat, either. When he needs to enter the fray, the Magnus Hammer—his symbol of office—can call down devastating lightning from the sky.

In boot camp, Impactor gave Ultra his name. 12 million stellar cycles ago, as the Decepticons began to rally around the insurgent named Megatron, Ultra Prime was sworn in as Magnus in replacement of Powered Convoy. Ultra Magnus immediately passed the Decepticon Registration Act, and two million stellar cycles later, the Great War had begun. First there was an attack on Cybertron itself by the Decepticons, and then one by one, the other planets in the Commonwealth fell to the Decepticons. Transformers Animated: The AllSpark Almanac II

The Decepticons continued dealing the Autobots defeats. After the experimental Cosmic Rust toxin made a battle for the Hydrax Plateau particularly costly, Bots of Science putting the Autobots in a sinkhole of morale, Ultra Magnus did his best to rally the troops behind him once more. The tide began to turn when Ultra Magnus made the drastic decision to hide the AllSpark from both Autobot and Decepticon by launching it into the cosmos. After this, the war began to cool down. Transformers Animated: The AllSpark Almanac II

The Autobot ninja Dai Atlas would end up as Ultra Magnus' right hand, acting as general of all ground forces and the Elite Guard under his orders. Transformers Animated: The AllSpark Almanac II

Towards the end of the Great War, an Autobot intelligence agent named Arcee was in danger of falling into Decepticon hands. Ultra Magnus sent Ratchet to recover her so the access codes she held in her data banks couldn't be used to deal a devastating blow to the Autobots. He specifically ordered Ratchet to bring Arcee back in one piece, but due to a run-in with Lockdown, her memory was erased by Ratchet's EMP generator. The Thrill of the Hunt

Desperate for the access codes she'd been carrying, Magnus had Ratchet perform open-processor surgery on her. When Ratchet's proximity triggered a failsafe data transfer, Magnus assigned the medic to take her place as the activator/mentor to the Autobots' ultimate weapon: Omega Supreme. TransWarped

Omega Supreme was just the first of Ultra Magnus's Project Omega, and the fleet of Omega Sentinels was instrumental to helping end the war. Finally, with the Battle for Iacon won and the Tyrest Accord signed, the Decepticons were defeated. Ultra Magnus granted the surviving Decepticons amnesty so long as they stayed in exile. Transformers Animated: The AllSpark Almanac II

Long after the end of the war, Ultra Magnus took a strong interest in Cadet Optimus, noting his combat simulator scores were higher than anyone else had ever managed. The Arrival issue 5 He had high hopes, believing Optimus could even become a Magnus, but then Optimus, Cadet Sentinel, and Cadet Elita-1 took an unauthorised trip to an organic planet. Elita-1 was MIA, Sentinel blamed Optimus for the loss, and Optimus took full responsibility for the screw-up. Ultra Magnus' judgement was that the offending cadet was to be expelled from the Autobot Academy and be ineligible for service in the Cybertron Elite Guard. However, still impressed by Optimus' service, he had him bumped up to Prime rank and given a ship to command. Endgame, Part I

Later, Optimus attempted to contact Magnus to report that 1) he and his maintenance ship crew had discovered the legendary AllSpark, and 2) they were now being pursued by Decepticons. Though nearly denied by Sentinel Prime, Optimus Prime got patched through to Ultra Magnus to report on the discovery. Magnus still didn't believe the Decepticons would pose much of a threat, but agreed to dispatch some ships to escort Optimus's ship. He warned Prime not to pull any heroics, as it wasn't in Prime's programming.

This, of course, would all go out the window once it was discovered that the Decepticons in pursuit were in Megatron's flagship, at which point the Autobots decided that they should book it. Transform and Roll Out

Eventually, Ultra Magnus located Earth with Sentinel Prime and Jazz. Upon landing on Earth, Magnus seemed to trust Sentinel's judgment regarding the planet. This might well have been because the big blue lug wouldn't let anyone else get a word in edgewise. Hearing that the AllSpark had been supposedly destroyed, Magnus announced that he intended to take these charges very seriously and investigate. Adopting the vehicle mode suggested by his subordinate, the Autobot Supreme Commander proceeded to drive around downtown Detroit as a massive military vehicle. Smooth.

However, once he was led to Dinobot Island, he had to bail out that same subordinate, who had angered the Dinobots. After a distress call from Sumdac Systems was answered, he turned the tide in a battle against malfunctioning police drones. As Optimus Prime acted bravely, loyally, and with sound tactical judgment during that incident, he commended the wayward Academy bot, simultaneously putting Sentinel in his place, much to Sentinel's chagrin. Seeing evidence that the AllSpark indeed still existed scattered about the city, he settled in for the long haul. The Elite Guard

Ultra Magnus was unable to come to the press meeting, so Sentinel Prime went in his place. Supreme Commander Magnus wanted a report about the reported Decepticon activity, and about Sentinel "losing [his] head". Optimus covered for Sentinel, stretching the truth in front of him. Magnus left to report to Cybertron Command on "a matter of great importance". The Return of the Headmaster

Upon his return, Magnus received a report from Ironhide that there was an increased amount of Decepticon activity at the galaxy's rim, particularly targeting space bridges. Ironhide was unable to report further, as the Decepticon attack destroyed the transmitter. Since Magnus had still not seen any evidence of Decepticon activity on Earth, he reasoned that resources were better dedicated to the defense of Cybertron and its colonies, and thus ordered Optimus and his crew to prepare for departure.

Taking Optimus Prime aside, he expressed concern that should the general population come to believe that Megatron was still alive, it would incite a panic and embolden the Decepticons. Optimus objected, but Magnus felt that easing the concerns of the civilians was their duty to Cybertron. Optimus continued to drag his heels until Magnus was alerted to AllSpark activity on a commuter train. Ordering Sentinel to remain behind to keep an eye on Optimus, he left with Jazz to investigate.

After his hammer proved insufficient to dislodge the AllSpark shard, he was ultimately saved by the insubordinate Optimus and his crew, particularly the intervention of the little organic with the Key. Optimus insisted that the whole event was a Decepticon trap, just as Sentinel Prime arrived with charges of assaulting a fellow officer. Finally having enough of the insubordinate repairbot, Magnus was about to give Optimus Prime a serious reprimand—right when evidence of Decepticon activity quite literally fell into his lap as Starscream was knocked from the sky. As Starscream rebooted, Magnus turned and ordered his subordinates to stay back while he dealt with Starscream. He was rather surprised to find Starscream pointing a blaster in his face when he decided to turn around again, and even more so when the flying traitor blasted him point-blank. Magnus was repaired by Ratchet and Sari while the remainder of the Autobots brought Starscream into custody. Once all was said and done, Magnus apologized for doubting Optimus Prime's claims of Decepticon activity, and again praised Optimus's decision-making skills and scolded Sentinel for insisting that things be done "by the book". He also decided that while he was needed to direct the war effort on Cybertron, the Decepticons on Earth had to be dealt with as well. Therefore, Ultra Magnus and the Elite Guard left for Cybertron, while Optimus Prime's crew remained on Earth to locate the AllSpark shards and capture the Decepticons. Magnus helpfully left a box of stasis cuffs to make their jobs somewhat easier. Mission Accomplished

Ultra Magnus later witnessed Starscream's escape from his ship and contacted Optimus Prime to inform him of the breakout. A Fistful of Energon

Ultra Magnus contacted the Earth Autobots to inform them that a convicted traitor named Wasp had escaped from prison. After finding out Bumblebee had some history with him, Magnus requested he keep an optic out, on the off chance the traitor showed up on Earth. Autoboot Camp

In the wake of Megatron's return, Magnus found himself faced with ever-mounting attacks by Decepticons on space bridge outposts all over the galactic rim. As a security measure, he ordered the entire space bridge nexus on Cybertron shut down, much to the consternation of Intel Chief Longarm Prime. He then convened a meeting of the Autobot High Council, at which he announced that the level of coordination in the Decepticon uprisings indicated an inside source, a Decepticon double agent on Cybertron. Longarm Prime was quick to assert that the agent in question was Wasp, as the Decepticon activity had occurred following the fugitive's escape. Magnus assigned Sentinel Prime and Jazz to assemble an Elite Guard unit to track down Wasp, then ordered that they contact Optimus Prime, as the Earth Autobots had been out of touch for decacycles. He was a bit nonplussed at Longarm Prime's insistence that all communications with Earth be filtered through Longarm himself first—Longarm assured him this was for security reasons. TransWarped

Despite Longarm's request, Magnus ordered Jazz and Sentinel Prime to pursue Wasp to Earth without letting Longarm know, lest word of the pursuit somehow reach Wasp and give him warning. Unfortunately, Magnus was preparing against the wrong traitor. Caught off-guard by a desperate Shockwave, Magnus was left heavily damaged and bereft of his hammer, barely able to tell Ironhide who was responsible. Where Is Thy Sting?

Cliffjumper informed Sentinel Prime of the details, noting that the Autobots had been thrown into shock and despair. Five Servos of Doom

Though Ultra Magnus survived the attack, he was left incapacitated and on spark support. Sentinel Prime returned to Cybertron to assume command as a "temporary Magnus," though the other members of the Autobot Council disapproved of his rush to take control and his penchant for secrecy. In his inaugural parade, Sentinel swore that Ultra Magnus would be avenged, and the crowd cheered approvingly. Decepticon Air

His image was used—kind of gratuitously—in an anti-Decepticon propaganda ad by Sentinel Prime. Comatose in the Cybertron Central Infirmary, he was seen by Ratchet and the Decepticon spy Shockwave as their fight spilled over into the room he was being held in. With a final goodbye to his former boss, Shockwave was preparing to deal the fatal blow with Magnus' hammer, when Ratchet blasted it and then Shockwave with his EMP Generator, saving Ultra Magnus (for the time being). This Is Why I Hate Machines

As Ultra Magnus lay on his death bed, he told Ratchet that he wanted him to deliver the Magnus hammer to Optimus Prime. He also wanted him to tell Optimus that he should return to the elite guard and tell him he was wrong to have discharged him so cruelly. Ratchet assured him he would be able to tell Prime himself. After Magnus said this, Shockwave showed up to finish him off. Ratchet defended his supreme commander by using his magnets to throw things at the Decepticon spy. Unfortunately Ratchet had also thrown the Magnus hammer at Shockwave, so he could now use that to destroy both of them. When suddenly the Magnus hammer activated, electrocuting the spy.

Shockwave was dead and it turned out the one who had activated the hammer was Ultra Magnus.

After an undetermined portion of time, the Magnus hammer was delivered to Optimus Prime who also had a new wingblade jetpack. He prepared to use these weapons in his battle with the three Lugnut Supremes. Optimus Prime swore that his team would show Ultra Magnus victory. The Cool Extra issue 1
He can simply grip it in his hand or one can attach it by inserting the tab on the handle into the slot in his palm. Pressing the red switch on the side of the vehicle mode activates laser sound effects and causes his guns to light up yellow. Rotating his shoulders down or up activates transformation noises. His guns can be hidden in both modes for show-accuracy, or deployed for Blowing-Everything-Up-accuracy. : Unfortunately, there are reports of problems with the sounds on several units. Some have partial sounds or no sounds at all, while others have overly sensitive sensors for the shoulder joints, leading to transformation sounds every time you move the arms. Also, an inordinate number of units suffer from notably poor quality control of the face's paint applications.
Notes
* Furman also uses repeated sound effects. Grimlock gives a stellar example of some favourites during The War Within as he chases after Prime and Megatron. SPOOM! used to be quite common, although it has stopped appearing since some fans decided it was so awesome that they asked Simon in person to use it more. Thankfully though, Transformers still have a tendency to die with a good ol' SHEEAAAGH!, more than once preceded by a truncated "Got to—" as their final words.
* Even Furman's non-canonical works are not immune to Furmanisms. In the pseudocanonical story "The Last Days of Optimus Prime" Megatron uses the phrase "It never ends."
* Furman himself is wryly aware of his frequently repeated phrases, and even refers to them as Furmanisms.
* In the "Shattered Expectations" April Fools comic, Goldbug uses a reverse Furmanism: "Once we have this secret technology the Decepticon insurgency will be FINISHED... OVER!" He later uses it (for real) in "Eye in the Sky". In later parts of the Shattered Glass universe, the Furmanisms begin getting not only flipped but fully mirrored.
* Fisitron uses Fisitronisms in his Wreckers: Declassified datalogs. Skyfall chides the author for overusing certain phrases, but Fisitron notes that after 331 datalogs one is bound to start repeating oneself. Bullets
Transformers writer Simon Furman is infamous among fans for dialogue concepts that are frequently retrod. Such repeated phrases are known informally as Furmanisms.

Bullets
Bulkhead encounters life-threatening danger during the last relic hunt.

Synopsis
With other teams dispatched to find relics, Megatron visits the Insecticon hive and calls for a volunteer. Hardshell steps forward and Megatron sends him and three others to find the fourth and final relic. The four Insecticons arrive in a volcanic region on the equator and immediately split up.

At the Autobot base, Bulkhead watches Miko leave with her team before he is dispatched to the area at the equator. Though he arrives at the correct coordinates, there's no relic there, but his search is interrupted by the approach of Hardshell. The Insecticon attacks Bulkhead and, after a brief exchange of words, the pair fight. Although he takes a few hits, the Wrecker flattens Hardshell, knocking a mandible off the Insecticon in the process. Bulkhead then heads downhill, realizing that an old lava flow may have taken the relic in the same direction. He keeps Agent Fowler updated back at base via radio. Meanwhile, Hardshell comes to and heads off with the other Insecticons to find their target.

Though leaking energon from his fight, Bulkhead manages to find the relic. Unfortunately, it turns out to be a toxic form of Energon known as Tox-En, which Megatron could refine into a lethal bioweapon. Though Fowler suggests bringing it to base, Bulkhead realizes that he's going to have to dispose of it himself, "Wrecker style". Hardshell and the other Insecticons find the vessel shortly after, but as one of them goes to grab the small piece of Tox-En within, the grenade Bulkhead left behind explodes, leaving him fatally riddled with Tox-En shrapnel. Hardshell lets Megatron know about the Tox-En, but Megatron wants to know why Hardshell doesn't have the stuff yet.

Bulkhead, meanwhile, runs away from the volcano with the rest of the Tox-En, leaving a trail of leaking energon to throw off the Insecticons. As he turns and starts to head up the volcano, Bulkhead strikes up a conversation with Fowler about their past war-time careers and discovers they've more in common than they'd previously thought. However, as Bulkhead continues his journey, he begins to feel the effects of the toxic energon and almost succumbs to its spark-sapping properties. After Agent Fowler convinces him to keep going for the sake of duty and family, namely Miko, Bulkhead trudges on.

Meanwhile, Hardshell figures out the false trail, and he and the other Insecticons fly uphill. They catch up to Bulkhead, who has just arrived at the volcano's mouth, and surround him. Bulkhead throws a grenade at one Insecticon and jabs the Tox-En into Hardshell. The third Insecticon charges in bug mode, but Bulkhead decks it with the Tox-En and jabs the chunk into its shell before turning back to face Hardshell. Receiving the news that Miko is safe, Bulkhead begins sparring with Hardshell, though they are both now weakened from the toxic energon. Though Hardshell manages to get the better of Bulkhead, as he moves to finish the Wrecker off, Bulkhead works up the strength to throw Hardshell over to the Tox-En before flinging the monster towards a hole in the caldera crust leading down into the molten lava. Bulkhead then throws the Tox-En to Hardshell, and the dizzied Insecticon falls into the volcano, destroying the toxic relic. As Bulkhead heads for the GroundBridge, Hardshell climbs out of the volcano and shoots the Autobot in the back, sending him flying through the GroundBridge to land within the Autobot base, his back burning. Ratchet, Raf, and Fowler see the smoke coming out of Bulkhead and run to his aid.
"No, they'll want it even more! During the war for Cybertron, Megatron figured out a way to refine raw Tox-En; turned it into a weapon of mass destruction. :—Hardshell confronts Bulkhead at the volcano's crater.

"Bulkhead, you still with me?"<br>
"I'm in the scrap and you put me on hold?"<br>
"I want you to know; Miko's safe. Mission accomplished."<br>
"That's my girl..."
:—Agent Fowler removes a weight off Bulkheads mind.

"Fowler...mission accomplished. Though you might have to...tuck me in."
:—Half-dead from Tox-En poisoning, and all Bulkhead needs is a nap? Hardcore.

Notes
Animation and technical errors
* Both of Bulkhead's maces silently transform during his first fight with Hardshell.
* In the establishing shot of the Tox-En before the commercial break, there are two samples in the container; the larger one which Bulkhead takes with him, and the smaller one he leaves as a booby trap. After the commercial break, the same shot shows only the larger sample.
* When Bulkhead incapacitates one of the Insecticons with the Tox-En ("Here, hold this!"), it is in its beetle alt-mode. After it manages to shake to Tox-En off of its body, it is suddenly in robot mode after the shot of the crystal rolling on the ground.
**Speaking of that Insecticon, its fate is somewhat ambiguous. It falls over in a way that suggests that it's unconscious or dead, but Hardshell acts as though it is still online. Either way, it doesn't appear for the rest of the episode.
Continuity errors
* In "Triangulation", Bulkhead is shown running through the GroundBridge for his mission. However, in this episode he is shown just walking through the bridge.
* As Fowler tries to contact Bulkhead during the battle in the volcano's caldera, we see Ratchet and Raf downloading the Iacon database in the background (as seen in the previous episode). However, when the same scene was shown in "Triage", Fowler was silent for the duration of Ratchet and Raf's conversation.

Continuity notes
* This is the final episode of the four-part relic-hunting arc, all four parts of which happen concurrently. This episode focuses on Bulkhead and Fowler. Fowler's handling of Vogel in "Tunnel Vision" and the Antarctic research base in "Triangulation" are shown from his point of view. Raf is also seen programming the virus that Ratchet installs in Laserbeak in "Triage". The ending scene is the same as in "Triage".
* The room currently occupied by the Insecticon hive was previously used to store Dark Energon way back in "Darkness Rising, Part 2".
* During Bulkhead's first fight with Hardshell, the Insecticon delivers an attack that looks eerily similar to how Starscream killed Cliffjumper. The actual hit is obscured (the camera is set behind Hardshell), but it doesn't seem to do any visible damage (although this could be why Bulkhead was leaking energon after the fight).
**At the end of the fight, Bulkhead clocks Hardshell with a wicked uppercut, knocking off one of his mandibles. The scene plays out in a suspiciously similar fashion to how Cliffjumper lost one of his horns to a Vehicon in "Darkness Rising, Part 1"; the mandible even sticks point-first in the ground.
* Fowler makes mention of his old Army Ranger days, which he first mentioned in "Nemesis Prime".
* Bulkhead flashes back to numerous episodes from the first season when Fowler is trying to get him to continue the mission. First, he remembers several instances where his life was threatened, including:
**Leading Scraplets through the GroundBridge into the Arctic in "Scrapheap".
**Getting his Energon drained by the energon harvester in "Deus ex Machina".
**Clashing with Breakdown in "Out of His Head".
**Getting blown back by the malfunctioning GroundBridge in "Shadowzone".
**Protecting Miko from falling rocks in "Rock Bottom".
**Clashing with Breakdown in "Operation: Breakdown".
**Being wired to one of Dreadwing's bombs in "Loose Cannons".
**Getting attacked by Scraplets in "Scrapheap".
* Shortly after the above, Bulkhead remembers several interactions with Miko, including:
**Miko assuring him that she's protected before Bulkhead heads down a slope in "Darkness Rising, Part 3".
**Bulkhead showing Miko a new battle scar in "Metal Attraction".
**Miko revealing herself from inside Bulkhead's chest in "Darkness Rising, Part 4".
**Bulkhead trying to dissuade Miko from using him as a role model in "Deus ex Machina".
**An exhausted Miko trying to clear rubble in "Rock Bottom".
**Miko trying to get an amnesiac Bulkhead to remember her in "T.M.I.".
* Bulkhead's tactic of hiding a grenade in the Tox-En container is similar to the one proposed by Wheeljack in "Triage".

Transformers references
* Hardshell is the modern name for the G1 Insecticon Bombshell.
* During Bulkhead's flashback to the victims of Megatron's refined Tox-En weapon, one of the corpses in the foreground looks a lot like an Ironhide from another continuity. The reddish one behind it looks similar to the generic impaled by Megatron during Ratchet's flashback to the beginning of the Great War in "One Shall Rise, Part 3".
* Hardshell says "yes" in a suspiciously familiar fashion, yesss...
* Green-tinted energon that emits visible fumes and is toxic to Cybertronians was previously seen in Transformers: Energon. Given Bulkhead's flashback, Megatron's refined, weaponized version of Tox-En may be a small-scale version of the energon gas that plagued that series' version of Cybertron.

Real-world references
* While still recovering from the shock he received in "Flying Mind", Fowler blurts out "I can has cheeseburger", a popular cat-based internet meme.
* Considering its green coloration, mineral-like composition, and fatal effects from prolonged exposure, Tox-En is essentially Cybertronian Kryptonite.

Trivia
* In the past, the Wreckers have generally been a small, closely knit unit (despite their horrific attrition rates). However, Hardshell's comment that he's faced Wreckers numerous times suggests the team is much larger in the Aligned continuity.
* Despite having at least one more grenade on his person, Bulkhead doesn't attempt to leave the entire Tox-En cache in his Insecticon trap. Presumably, it wouldn't have been enough to completely destroy the toxic fuel, or it wouldn't have fit in the canister, giving Hardshell's team warning that something was up.
* Bulkhead finally finds something even worse than Scraplets. Incidentally, he saw the effects of both Scraplets and Tox-En during the war, and neither was a pleasant experience.
