Though many (and some might even say ''most'') Transformers toys are designed to resemble Earth vehicles, only a significant minority actually represent ''specific'' Earth vehicles, the majority having been fudged so as not to have to pay royalties to the actual owners of these vehicle designs.

The exception to this is when [[Hasbro]], [[TakaraTomy]] or both acquire a license specifically to make a toy sculpt of a given vehicle. These licenses are most often with car manufacturers across the world, but have recently expanded to include aircraft and other military hardware.

The notion of Transformers toys being officially licensed replicas of vehicles is a fairly recent one, and even more recent in Hasbro and TakaraTomy actually embracing it with gusto. It can be a risky decision, as licenses need to be maintained and working relationships with the originating companies fostered. Molds whose licenses have expired are unable to remain in production, thus lessening the potential for [[redeco]]s and [[retool]]s. As well, the companies granting the licenses often request a level of creative control over the characters created from their licensed property.

==History==
===Generation 1===
Even though the original ''[[The Transformers (toyline)|Generation 1]]'' Autobot Cars released in 1984 and 1985, just like their ''[[Diaclone]]'' predecessors, were closely based on existing car models, none of them were officially licensed. In some instances, sponsor decals of racing cars were slightly altered ("[[wikipedia:Gitanes|Gitanes]]" becoming "Citanes", "[[wikipedia:Martini_Racing|Martini]]" becoming "Martinii", "[[wikipedia:Alitalia|Alitalia]]" becoming "Alitalla" etc.) in order to avoid legal trouble with those companies.

An odd case is the Autobot Car [[Jazz (G1)|Jazz]] (based on a Porsche 935 Turbo), whose original European version, released by [[Milton Bradley]] in 1985, sported an additional "Porsche" note after the name "Jazz" on the packaging. It's still unclear whether this was supposed to indicate a licensed vehicle, or was merely intended to highlight a domestic vehicle, as the MB toys were also available in Germany.

===Robots in Disguise===
Although the three ''[[Transformers: Robots in Disguise (toyline)|Robots in Disguise]]'' Autobot Brothers [[Prowl (RID)|Prowl]], [[Side Burn (RID)|Side Burn]] and [[X-Brawn]] were all based on real-world vehicles (Prowl on a Lamborghini Diablo, Side Burn on a Dodge Viper and X-Brawn on a Mercedes-Benz ML320 SUV), Takara released their ''Car Robots'' versions without any licensing. When Hasbro brought over the ''Car Robots'' line as ''Robots in Disguise'', they also intended to avoid having to pay license fees, going so far as to retool X-Brawn's headlights as compared to the ''Car Robots'' version in order to make the vehicle look "different" from a real Mercedes.

However, Dodge/DaimlerChrysler apparently still considered Side Burn's vehicle form too close to a real Dodge Viper. Therefore, they pressured Hasbro into acquiring a license. Starting with the red "new style" redeco of RID Side Burn, all subsequent versions of the mold were officially licensed, and in return sported a small official Dodge Viper logo on top of the front grille. Furthermore, the last release of the mold, the Wal*Mart exclusive ''[[Transformers: Universe (2003 toyline)|Universe]]'' Deluxe from 2004, even sported a "Viper" sticker on the front of the packaging, and a "Dodge Official Licensed Product" sticker on the back of the packaging.

The established licensing relationship between Hasbro and DaimlerChrysler/Dodge was presumably also the reason why a Dodge Viper was one of the first vehicles to be actually released as part of the ''[[Transformers: Alternators| Alternators]]'' line.

A few months after the "new style" redeco of ''RID'' Side Burn had come out, Hasbro also released a Wal-Mart exclusive two-pack of [[Retool|retools]]/redecos of the ''[[Transformers: Generation 2 (toyline)|Generation 2]]'' [[Laser Cycle|Laser Cycles]] [[Road Rocket (G2)|Road Rocket]] (based on a Yamaha GTS1000A motorcycle) and [[Road Pig (G2)|Road Pig]] (based on a Harley-Davidson Electra Glide motorcycle), named [[Sideways (RID)|Sideways]] and [[Axer (G1)|Axer]], respectively. One of the inside flaps of the packaging for the two-pack contained a copyright note identifying the two toys as licensed Yamaha and Harley-Davidson vehicles, respectively. (The G2 versions of the two molds had been unlicensed.)

===Alternators/Binaltech===
Hasbro and Takara finally jumped in with both feet in 2003, launching a toyline that was ''entirely'' composed of licensed vehicle modes. Some of this line was leveraged by the companies' growing relationship with the DaimlerChrysler corporation, with some of the toys using vehicle modes by DaimlerChrysler subsidiaries Dodge and Jeep. Other car manufacturers participating were Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru), Mazda, General Motors (Chevrolet), Ford, Honda (including its US subsidiary Acura) and Toyota (plus its US subsidiary Scion). Most of these companies have their parent companies based either in Japan or the United States; the only genuine European manufacturer willing to license one of their vehicles was Jaguar, owned, at the time, by [[wikipedia:Jaguar_Cars#Ford_Motor_Company|Ford]].

The ''[[Transformers: Alternators| Alternators]]'' line hit some snags in its early development stages when Hasbro approached Porsche and Volkswagen with plans to make new toys of [[Jazz (G1)|Jazz]] and [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]], respectively. Prototypes of Jazz as a Porsche 986 were made, but Porsche refused to grant Hasbro and Takara the license, arguing that Transformers are "war machines" and thus "not worthy [of] carrying the Porsche trademark."<ref>[http://www.tfarchive.com/community/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24622 Former Porsche employee Addl recounting an informal inquiry with Porsche's licensing department at TF Archive]</ref> As a consequence, the toy ultimately never went into production. Volkswagen had similar concerns as Porsche, what with not wanting to be associated with "war toys", therefore the design (as a Volkswagen New Beetle) never made it past the 2D stage. The [[prototype]] for Jazz was later shown in the Japanese book ''[[The Transformers: Binaltech & TF Collection Complete Guide]]'' and during the [[BotCon 2007]] Hasbro Tour, and control drawings for both Bumblebee and Cliffjumper were also published in the same book.

Other companies also had their own objections: General Motors/Chevrolet initially denied Hasbro and Takara the license for a new version of [[Tracks (G1)|Tracks]] based on a Chevrolet Corvette Z06 for unknown reasons. Unlike other companies, they later had a change of mind, but not before the real-life C5 generation Corvette was about to be phased out of production, making the toy (and its [[Redeco|redecos]]) seem somewhat outdated when they were finally released. An ''Alternators'' toy based on a Mini Cooper was allegedly also in the works in 2004 (semi-confirmed by early preorders for a ''Binaltech'' version), but Hasbro and Takara reportedly failed to obtain the required license. Rumors of actually existing prototypes were never confirmed, however.

Along the same lines, Honda's North American branch urged Hasbro to omit a long gun barrel accessory from the ''Alternators'' version of [[Windcharger (G1)|Windcharger]] (a Honda S2000), together with all references to "weapons" from the packaging. Even though Honda's Japanese branch had no such concerns, allowing Takara to release their ''Binaltech'' version of the toy (named [[Overdrive]]) with the full barrel, Honda Japan insisted that the packaging must not feature any official Honda logos... out of fear that customers might mistake it for an official Honda product, rather than a licensed product by a third party.<ref name="ichhonda">[http://groups.google.com/group/alt.toys.transformers/msg/bf10a2825e6382d6 Hirofumi Ichikawa clearing up some details behind Binaltech Overdrive, relayed by Doug Dlin at alt.toys.transformers.]</ref> (Apparently that policy has changed in the meantime, since ''Binaltech'' [[Arcee (G1)|Arcee]], a retool of Overdrive, ''does'' sport official Honda logos on the toy's packaging.) There were also store listings for an unspecified Mitsubishi vehicle which ultimately never materialized... and Hasbro themselves confirmed at [[BotCon 2006]] that a Cadillac XLR (as [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]]) would have been the next mold in the line, had ''Alternators'' not been cancelled.

Eventually much of the ''Alternators'', ''Binaltech'', and derived toylines (such as ''Binaltech Asterisk'' and ''[[Transformers: Kiss Players (toyline)|Kiss Players]]'') had to be taken out of production due to the expiration of the licenses which initially allowed their release.

===Star Wars Transformers===
Beginning in 2006, Hasbro leveraged its existing license to produce [[Star Wars (franchise)|Star Wars]] toys for Lucasfilms with its ownership of the Transformers brand. The resulting toys were considered Transformers, but not Cybertronians and had no ties to prior franchise fiction. Rather, the figures were mecha piloted by Star Wars characters, and each included a "pilot" figure.

In 2008, Hasbro rolled this toyline into the greater umbrella of their new [[Transformers: Crossovers]] brand. Thus rebranded, the "pilot" figurines were omitted from the re-released toys.

===2007 Movie===
The advent of the [[Transformers (film)|2007 live-action movie]] required licensing on a grand scale, as nearly all alternate modes featured in the film had to be at least nominally real-life vehicles. [[DreamWorks]]/[[Paramount Pictures|Paramount]] reached what must be assumed to have been a very lucrative deal with General Motors, using vehicles from their product line as the movie's [[Autobot|Autobots]]' alternate modes almost exclusively. All of those vehicles were also licensed to Hasbro for their accompanying [[Movie (toyline)|toyline]]. [[Barricade (Movie)|Barricade]], meanwhile, whose vehicle mode was based on a Ford Mustang, was licensed by Saleen (who had provided a tuned up Saleen S281 "Extreme" Mustang for the movie), because Ford didn't want one of their cars used as a "villain". Therefore, Barricade sports no "Ford" logos in the movie. On a rather bizarre note, even the [[Robot Replicas]] figures of [[Bumblebee (Movie)|Bumblebee]] and [[Jazz (Movie)|Autobot Jazz]] were licensed (whereas the Barricade figure wasn't), as was the Turnarounds Unleashed Autobots bust (Autobot Jazz and [[Ratchet (Movie)|Autobot Ratchet]], only released in Australia and Asia since it was cancelled for the US market). Since the figures and the bust don't actually ''transform'', and the copyright remark for the bust only mentions Pontiac but not Hummer, this was likely due to the fact that the robot modes feature the official manufacturer logos on their chests.

In addition, a new development in the official licensing of vehicle modes came in the fact that the movie used real-life ''military'' vehicles as well, namely the [[Blackout (Movie)|Sikorsky MH-53 Pave Low helicopter]], the [[Starscream (Movie)|Lockheed-Martin F-22 Raptor]] and the [[Bonecrusher (Movie)|Force Protection Buffalo mine-protected vehicle]] - in fact, even the Starscream Barrel Roll Blaster role-play accessory was an officially licensed toy based on an F-22 Raptor!

Meanwhile, new-mold toys inspired by non-transforming vehicles that appeared in the movie, such as [[Longarm (Movie)|Longarm]] (based on a GMC Topkick tow-truck), [[Incinerator (Movie)|Incinerator]] (based on a Bell Helicopter V-22 Osprey) and [[Stockade (Movie)|Stockade]] (based on a Cadillac Escalade SUV), again had their alternate forms modified in order to avoid having to acquire licenses (for example, Longarm's toy was more closely based on a Ford F-350 truck). The only exception to this was [[Landmine (Movie)|Landmine]], who was based on a [[Sector Seven]] buggy specifically designed for the movie. Therefore, Hasbro was able to keep the toy's vehicle form spot on to the movie vehicle, since they didn't require an additional license aside from the obligatory DreamWorks/Paramount one.

Unfortunately, due to issues of vehicle-mode licensing and the fact that the robot designs are the shared intellectual property of DreamWorks/Paramount, it is a virtual certainty that the Movie toys will never be made available as [[redeco]]s in other franchises (except [[Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (toyline)|movie sequels]]) or as [[BotCon|convention]] [[Exclusive|exclusives]]. So get 'em while the getting's good!

===Universe===
In August 2007, a particularly odd toy with a licensed vehicle mode turned up. The purported character was [[Swerve (Chevy)|Swerve]], though the toys were poly-bagged with no character bio. The vehicle mode was a General Motors Chevrolet Aveo. To make matters even more complicated, the instructions sheet included within the polybag marked Swerve as part of the ''Universe'' line (using the logo of the [[Transformers: Universe (2003 toyline)|''original'' toyline of that name launched in 2003]] rather than that of the [[Transformers: Universe (2008 franchise)|second line of that name officially launched in 2008]]).

Early reports throughout the fandom, tepidly verified by Hasbro sources, suggested that the mold's creation had been commissioned by General Motors for that company's [[exclusive]] use; neither Hasbro nor TakaraTomy can use it in their own lines. This amounts to the first time that a "mainstream" Transformer mold was created to be an exclusive (as opposed to things like Happy Meal toys which are obviously distinct from standard product and cost far less to design and produce). The prevailing theory for the toy's existence was that it may have been commissioned as part of an advertising budget tax writeoff. "We spent X amount of money so we don't have to pay Y amount of taxes on our profits; thanks, Byzantine corporate tax laws!"

Not only were the exact origins of this toy a mystery, but also its intended purpose. Ultimately, it was only ever made available in extremely limited venues over the years, sometimes as a free giveaway for a local Chevrolet promotion (in Ontario, Canada in 2009), sometimes via online stores such as the Chevrolet online store in 2008 (which alternatively shipped from Switzerland or the United Arab Emirates, with massive markups for international shipping that made even [[toy scalping|scalper]] prices look reasonable by comparison) and [[BigBadToyStore]] in 2010.

===Alternity===
In early 2008, [[TakaraTomy]] announced a new toy to be released under the header ''Transformers: Alternity''. The toy's vehicle mode was based on a licensed Nissan GT-R, whereas the robot mode was based on a cross between the ''Alternators''/''Binaltech'' and the 2007 Movie line's aesthetic. The character was soon confirmed to be [[Optimus Prime (G1)/toys|Convoy]] (Optimus Prime), and the toy was announced to be released in two different color variants, similar to some ''Binaltech'' toys. This was followed by a licensed Nissan Fairlady Z which transformed into Megatron, likewise available in two deco variations, as well as a third color variant for Convoy. The line expanded beyond Nissan vehicles with the solicitation of a figure for [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]], which transforms into a licensed [[wikipedia:Suzuki Swift|Suzuki Swift]], and [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]], with a vehicle mode of the [[wikipedia:Mitsuoka Orochi|Mitsuoka Orochi]]. Hasbro stated at [[BotCon 2009]] that they have no intention to release those toys in the USA.

===Revenge of the Fallen===
Hasbro's relationship with General Motors continued into the development of the sequel to the live-action movie. In addition to recurring same-alternate mode characters [[Bumblebee (Movie)/toys|Bumblebee]] as a slightly updated 2009 Chevrolet Camaro, [[Ironhide (Movie)/toys|Ironhide]], [[Ratchet (Movie)|Ratchet]] and redecos of toys from the characters from the first movie (e.g. [[Smokescreen (Movie)|Smokescreen]] as a Pontiac Solstice), the ''[[Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (toyline)|Revenge of the Fallen]]'' line featured many new GM vehicles, this time all of them from their Chevrolet subsidiary. Among them were a new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray concept car ([[Sideswipe (Movie)|Sideswipe]]), the Chevrolet Beat ([[Skids (ROTF)|Skids]]), the Chevrolet Trax ([[Mudflap (ROTF)|Mudflap]]) and a new electric vehicle, the Chevrolet Volt ([[Jolt (ROTF)|Jolt]]). Unfortunately, due to GM's financial problems, a decision was made not to cross-promote the film from their end. [[Barricade (Movie)|Barricade]] also made a toy line-only return; however, whereas the first film's toys had only been licensed by Saleen, all his ''Revenge of the Fallen'' toys were licensed both by Saleen ''and'' Ford.

A lot of other vehicles, on the other hand, were not licensed, most of them from the Scout Class range. The most notable case is [[Sideways (ROTF)|Sideways]], a character who appears in the movie (with full support from Audi): His alternate mode is based on an Audi R8, but either due to Hasbro's well-known problems with acquiring licenses from German manufacturers or because of an exclusive deal with General Motors, the toys' vehicle mode was tweaked just enough to avoid having to obtain a license (similar to ''Robots in Disguise'' X-Brawn).

Just like the first movie, the film continued to license military vehicles. Lockheed Martin provided Hasbro with the licenses not only for the F-22 Raptor, but also for the SR-71 Blackbird ([[Jetfire (ROTF)|Jetfire]]), and various [[Grindor (ROTF)|Grindor]] toys were released as redecos of [[Blackout (Movie)|Blackout]] from the first movie, also as MH-53 Pave Low helicopters. Meanwhile, none of the construction vehicles used as the Constructicons' alternate modes were licensed.

===Transformers (2010)===
The [[Transformers (2010 toyline)|2010 ''Transformers'' line]] served as a toy-only continuation of the ''[[live-action film series]]'', bridging the gap between the second and third movie. It featured various redecos of older toys, but also entirely new sculpts for characters such as Bumblebee, Ironhide, Sideswipe and Starscream, all of them making use of the existing licenses.

===Dark of the Moon===
The [[Transformers: Dark of the Moon (film)|third entry in the live-action film series]] once again featured many of the established characters in slightly tweaked versions of the same vehicle modes. Sideswipe remained a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray but became a convertible, and Bumblebee's Chevrolet Camaro mode once again featured a few tweaks. The [[Transformers: Dark of the Moon (toyline)|accompanying toy line]] featured all those vehicles as well as redecos and retools of toys from the previous lines with their older vehicle models. Barricade also finally returns in the movie, and thus has several new toys. in Skids and Mudflap were intended to return in the movie as well, this time both of them in the form of a Chevrolet Spark (the production model of Skids' Chevy Beat concept car from ''Revenge of the Fallen''), but even though they were ultimately scrapped from the movie, Hasbro still released several toys of them, with some of Skids' toys being straight redecos or minor retools of their ''Revenge of the Fallen'' counterparts, while the rest, including all of Mudflap's toys, were new sculpts and accurate renditions of the Chevrolet Spark. Another new licensed GM vehicle was the Chevrolet Suburban, used for the [[Dread (DOTM)|Dread]] [[Crankcase (DOTM)|Crankcase]].

A (more or less) new addition to the licensing fold is Mercedes-Benz. Unlike other German manufacturers, they apparently had no objections to their cars representing weapon-equipped alien robots (one of them even an evil Decepticon!), despite what [[Michael Bay]] claimed before the movie's release. [[Wheeljack (Movie)|Wheeljack]] aka "Que" transforms into a Mercedes-Benz E550 and [[Soundwave (ROTF)|Soundwave]] into a Mercedes-Benz SLS-AMG, and all their toys are fully licensed. It's possible that Mercedes's different attitude towards the ''Transformers'' brand compared to other German carmakers has something to do with them being part of Daimler-Benz, itself previously part of Daimler-Chrysler, which had already licensed some of their vehicles for the ''Alternators'' line a few years earlier (though all of them from the Chrysler end, which split from Daimler in 2007).

Italian manufacturer Ferrari also provided a Ferrari 458 Italia to serve as the alternate mode of [[Mirage (Movie)|Mirage]]; however, due to an exclusive licensing deal with Hasbro's biggest competitor Mattel, the character was not allowed to sport the name of a Hasbro toy in the movie (hence he was named "Dino" at the request of Ferrari), and the only toy Hasbro released of the character thus far, a non-transforming [[Speed Stars]] vehicle, is naturally not a licensed Ferrari model.

When [[Starscream (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Starscream]] was banished from the Decepticons for Yet Another Failed Coup Against [[Megatron (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Megatron]], he was deposited on the island of [[Guadalcanal]], the site of one of the major battles between the [[United States of America]] and [[Japan|Imperial Japan]] during [[World War II]]. There he found and rebuilt several abandoned US military vehicles to pass the time. After he finished, he decided that if Megatron can have a Decepticon army, then so can he!

After bluffing his way past [[Skywarp (G1)|Skywarp]] and [[Thundercracker (G1)|Thundercracker]] to use the [[space bridge]], he travelled to a [[Decepticon Detention Center|detention center]] on [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] and liberated the [[personality component]]s of several [[Renegade Decepticon|Decepticon political prisoners]] before destroying the rest. Back on [[Earth]], Starscream installed the sparks into the rusting military vehicles and ordered them to transform.

The reborn Combaticons were less than pleased with their 'new', primitive bodies, nor were they particularly thankful to Starscream for freeing them after millions of years of imprisonment. That is, until the former Decepticon Air Commander revealed that he had neglected to install [[energy absorber]] units into their bodies, so they would have no way of refueling. As he was the only one with the knowledge and expertise to install them, he demanded their allegiance in his aim to overthrow Megatron. The Combaticons agreed to obey Starscream, for now.

Under Starscream's leadership, the Combaticons managed to capture several prisoners, then used their energy absorbers to recharge themselves at a power plant. Unfortunately, Megatron and the Decepticons attacked, while the Autobots rescued their comrades. The [[Constructicon (G1)|Constructicons]] formed [[Devastator (G1)|Devastator]], who was quickly defeated by the Combaticons' much more powerful, but dull-witted combined form, Bruticus. Starscream ordered Bruticus to grab Megatron, forcing his former commander to acknowledge Starscream as the new leader of the Decepticons. Under duress, Megatron did so as the [[Stunticon (G1)|Stunticons]] watched nearby. The latter group, deciding that Starscream would be too dangerous as a leader, quickly formed [[Menasor (G1)|Menasor]] and defeated Bruticus with a single attack.

Starscream and the Combaticons were banished from Earth on a small asteroid, left to wallow in their own misery and blame each other for their failures. {{storylink|Starscream's Brigade}}

Starscream and the Combaticons quickly had a falling-out. After Starscream left, the Combaticons attacked Cybertron, easily defeating [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] and his [[Sentinel (G1)|drones]]. Thirsting for revenge, Onslaught reprogrammed the space bridge to pull Earth closer to the [[Sun]], in the hopes of destroying it and every Transformer there. The Autobots and Decepticons temporarily joined forces to retake Cybertron and prevent Earth's destruction, and with Starscream's help, they deactivated the Combaticons once they formed Bruticus through a failsafe device built into the treacherous giant's back. Optimus Prime and Megatron agreed that Bruticus must be destroyed, but the Decepticon leader fooled the Autobots by using Shockwave's [[holographic projector]] to make it appear as though Bruticus was destroyed, when in reality the combiner was reprogrammed to be loyal only to Megatron. {{storylink|The Revenge of Bruticus}}

Soon afterwards, during Megatron's latest scheme on Earth involving the theft of fighter aircraft using Middle-Eastern criminals, the Combaticons were called into service to defend Megatron's [[Giant Purple Griffin]], a large... thing that apparently pumped [[oil]]. Or something. Struggling against the [[Aerialbot (G1)|Aerialbots]], the Combaticons formed Bruticus, yet were still knocked over when the Aerialbots twisted a tow cable around his legs. The Decepticon combiner was finally defeated when the Aerialbots ignited the nearby oil wells, causing a massive explosion that sent Megatron, [[Rumble (G1)|Rumble]], Bruticus and gas prices flying away. {{storylink|Aerial Assault}}

Only Swindle survived, and he sold the remains of his comrades to various mercenaries and [[El Presidente|third-world dictator-types]], only to be forced to locate and rebuild the Combaticons by Megatron. The reformed Bruticus was then defeated when Megatron's disruptor cannon was overloaded by the human-built [[B.O.T. The Autobot [[Powerglide (G1)|Powerglide]] soon arrived to put a halt to their activities, and the dog expressed its gratitude by using its experimental powers to energize Powerglide with [[Scramble Power]]. As Powerglide used the power to combine with his fellow [[Mini Vehicle|Minibots]], the Combaticons responded by forming Bruticus. He proved weaker than this new [[Minibot combiner]], however, as it used the "Minibot Warrior Spiral Attack" to drill straight through Bruticus's chest, defeating him.

:As a [[Scramble City (toyline)|Scramble City]]-style [[combiner]] team, the Combaticon team includes four small toys, sold carded at the $5 price point, and one large leader toy, sold boxed for $12 or so and including all the combiner [[kibble]]. They were available as part of the 1986 and 1987 assortments. In most markets, the Combaticons were only sold as individuals; the combined [[giftset]] was only available in Japan and Italy.

While on their latest fantastical exploit, gentleman adventurers [[Walter Simmons]] and [[Theodore Joseph Wells]] run afoul of a [[Cave brute|race of inhuman subterranean monsters]] beneath the Sierra Nevada mountains. After escaping the beasts and re-entombing them beneath the Earth through a combination of Theodore's fondness for firearms and Walter's predilection for rational thinking, the pair are approached by [[United States of America|United States]] Secret Service agent [[Billy North]], who has been sent to draft the two men on orders of the [[President of the United States|president]]. Walter and Theodore's history of endeavours into the worlds of the unreal make them the ideal men to study the case of Captain [[Archibald Witwicky]], who has returned from a voyage to the [[Arctic]] blind and mad, spinning "delusional" tales of a giant mechanical man frozen beneath the ice. After questioning Witwicky in Boston, Walter is intrigued at the possibility, while Theodore scoffs at the notion, enraging Witwicky's first mate, [[Reginald Danco]], who accosts him. Defusing the confrontation, Walter and North learn that Danco also saw the metal man, and begin putting together an expedition to follow Danco's directions back to the Arctic and see it for themselves.

A short time later, Walter, Theodore, North and Danco set sail for the Arctic, joined by metallurgist [[Jack Arden]], explosives expert [[Philippe Bowen]] and geologist [[Theodore Grant]]. Witwicky's claims prove more than mere fantasy when the team discovers the frozen form of [[Megatron (Movie)|Megatron]], and Walter begins speculating about the true nature of the alien marvel before him. As Witwicky's presence did before, however, the arrival of the seven activates something within Megatron, and one-light second away, in [[Havana]], [[Cuba]], the long-dormant [[Jetfire (ROTF)|Jetfire]] senses the Decepticon leader's energy signal. Having been disguised as a [[United States Navy]] boat, Jetfire promptly transforms and flies away, leaving his crew none the wiser, thinking that their ship has merely been sunk by the Spanish.

Danco advocates destroying Megatron to North before he can pose a threat to humanity, while Walter and Theodore discuss each other's reactions: the former shocked by the latter's incredulity, the latter fearing the former may be consumed by the enormity of what they face. Arden, meanwhile, studies Megatron's metal body, coming to the frustrating conclusion that he is made of no metal he has ever seen; information without which Grant cannot calculate where Bowen should place his charges to free Megatron. The whole matter soon becomes a secondary concern when Jetfire comes crashing through the roof of the ice cave, having followed Megatron's signal there. Ignoring the humans, who look on in awe, he converses with the reactivated Megatron, but upon learning that the [[Decepticon]] is not [[The Fallen]], upon whom he seeks revenge, he simply punches his prone form. Jarred out of their shock by Jetfire's violent act, the seven spring into action, with North firing upon the Transformer with his six-guns. Irritated by the "insect's stings", Jetfire seizes North, and hurls him over his shoulder to his death. At Danco's direction, Grant and Bowen set up charges to blow the ice out from under Jetfire, while Walter, Theodore and Arden distract him from either side. The resultant explosion sends Jetfire plunging into the depths of the freezing sea, and partially immerses Megatron as well, knocking him offline; as he shuts down, Megatron gasps out his name, which Walter mis-hears as "Mega-Man".

The death of Agent North weighing heavily on his conscience, Walter tells Theodore that to be consumed by the extra-terrestrial mystery is inevitable. He tells the others he expects nothing from them, their duty to him and the mission done, but they all object, insisting that the group stay together. And so ends the first and only adventure of the [[First Seven]]...

*While the art keeps our heroes Joseph and Walter consistent (Joseph has dark hair and mutton chops, silver-haired Walter has a mustache), the script does not do them such favors. They are ''supposed'' to be Walter Simmons and Joseph Wells, but on page four, North refers to them as "Joseph Simmons" and "Walter Wells". The names then switch to the correct arrangement from page eight onward. One is perhaps given pause to wonder, then, why it is Wells who mispronounces "Witwicky" as "Wickety", just as [[Seymour Simmons]] did in [[Transformers (2007)|the first movie]], when this would make more sense as a joke if it was Seymour's ancestor Walter doing it.
*Despite the correct design of Megatron being used on the cover, the inside pages depict Megatron as he appeared in ''[[Revenge of the Fallen (film)|Revenge of the Fallen]]''.

*We won't judge you if you didn't realize this story had a title, because it's basically hidden as part of the artwork on the splash page of the seven boarding their ship, as a weathered word painted on the boards of the deck. It doesn't really ''look'' like a title, even, but later issues have clearly one-word titles that prove it must be.
*The issue has "FIELD NOTES From Agent John Barber": continuity notes and behind-the-scenes info about how the issue was created. Barber says this was editor Andy Schmidt's idea.
*Theodore and Walter previously appeared, unnamed, in the [[Movie Prequel issue 2|second issue]] of IDW's [[Movie Prequel|Movie Prequel]] comic; Walter was previously named in the prequel novel, "[[Ghosts of Yesterday]]". A building containing mysterious objects that appeared to be Sector Seven's headquarters appeared in that comic, at a time before the movie itself claimed the organization was supposed to have been founded, but is here [[retcon]]ned away as being Walter and Theodore's trophy collection from the various strange adventures and treasure-hunts they've been on (in his notes, Barber says these guys were presented as adventurers ''in'' the Prequel, which is a bit of a fudge). Barber also says that since the Prequel says [[Seymour Simmons]]' great-grandfather was part of the original Seven, he had to be one of those guys.
**A bit of a retcon-slash-error-smoothing takes place with the characters, however: despite not being named, the second issue of the prequel treated the dark-haired, mutton-chopped character (Wells) as being the one with the family and the growing obsession with Megatron. The [[Movie Prequel issue 3|third issue]], however, then puts the silver-haired, moustached character (Simmons) in that role, as he wistfully returns to Hoover Dam before his retirement over thirty years later. ''Sector 7'' united all these attributes in Simmons.
**Danco also appears in the prequel as part of Witwicky's crew, and does get named. A guy quite like him is seen with Sector Seven's crew later in the Prequel, so Barber decided to make them both the same character.
*The human cast are meant to represent "disparate parts" of the era, according to Barber: Simmons and Wells are "Jules Verne/HG Wells gentlemen scientist-adventurers", North is a "cowboy", Bowen is "basically... Oscar Wilde as an explosives expert", Grant is a "rugged hero in the mold [sic] of... fictional colonialist Allan Quatermain", and Arden is a throwback to the vanishing "pre-Industrial Revolution master-apprentice era".
*The ship's manifest seen on page nine is the list of the "[[First Seven]]" released on the internet during the [[Sector Seven (game)|Sector Seven alternate reality game]] promotion for the first movie. The names are here established to be aliases for the real men.
*Jetfire's appearance in this issue comes during the time he was wandering the Earth, previously glossed over in the final pages of [[Tales of the Fallen issue 3|''Tales of the Fallen'' #3]]. The old coot hasn't really appeared in a lot of media outside of the film itself, but ''Sector 7'' is fairly notable for being about the only thing to actually recreate the boisterous, self-aggrandizing, violence-happy personality that Jetfire has going on in the movie (complete with plenty of instances of him referring to himself in the third person!), compared to the much more reserved characterization seen in ''Tales of the Fallen'', or the [[Kup (Movie)|Kup]]-like treatment the video games gave him.
*Jetfire's maritime accident is a little unclear. It's based around the real-life sinking of the [[wikipedia:USS Maine (ACR-1)|USS ''Maine'']], which started the Spanish-American War. Barber's notes at the end of the issues claim that Jetfire was responsible for accidentally sinking it, but the art itself actually appears to suggest that Jetfire ''was'' the ''Maine'' (observe the anchor chains, masts and gunnery cannons that decorate his robot mode), and that him transforming was mistaken for the ship breaking up and sinking.
