The "Wyoming base" is a base belonging to the Decepticons stationed on Earth. It is located in eastern Wyoming, in a mining pit in the coal-rich Powder River Basin. It is the third hideout the Decepticons created for themselves on Earth, succeeding Fortress Sinister and Blackrock Aerospace Assembly Plant Number One but preceding Club Con.

Fiction
Marvel Comics continuity
noteukonly
After months of misfortune, Megatron's need for fuel led him to a coal mining pit in the Powder River Basin of eastern Wyoming. However, he found the coal to be indigestible and moments later froze up from fuel depletion. The area was immediately sealed off by the government, who at the time tried to calm the population by presenting the Transformers as evil inventions of a technological genius, Robot-Master, the creation and chance alter ego of Donny Finkleberg. Three days later, the government sent Finkleberg and Walter Barnett, an agent of the Intelligence and Information Institute, to the mining pit for another Robot-Master recording. G.B. Blackrock joined them to inform the two men that they were certified morons, but things really went awry when the Autobots got to the mining pit as well to deal with Megatron. Noting their ally Blackrock was present, they assumed they could approach, but instead Barnett gave the order to open fire on them. The chaos that resulted from this gave Soundwave and co. the opportunity to get near Megatron and refuel him. The fresh addition of the Decepticons to the fight made both the humans and Autobots retreat, but Megatron had Laserbeak bring back Finkleberg to see him killed for pretending to command the Decepticons. In return for his life, Finkleberg offered a deal to continue his Robot-Master charade to prevent the humans from ever allying with the Autobots. Megatron loathingly accepted. I, Robot-Master!

Megatron continued to occupy the mining pit, alongside Finkleberg and Ravage, who kept an eye on the human. Soundwave was intent on getting Megatron and Shockwave, who resided in Fortress Sinister in Oregon, to agree to co-commandership and so traveled back and forth between the two bases for a while to keep both Decepticons up to date on events. The intel on the Special Teams messed up those plans, as Megatron invited Shockwave to the mining pit to let their fists decide once and for all who was the true leader of the Decepticons. After Finkleberg had woven a story around the battle on camera, Soundwave stepped up to talk the two into finally joining forces. He succeeded Second Generation! and Shockwave left to prepare his troops for relocation to the mining pit. Meanwhile, Soundwave built an interspace transmitter-receiver tower so that Finkleberg's Robot-Master act no longer depended on humans coming close to the mining pit to film him.

When Shockwave returned with his troops, he and Megatron quickly got at each other's throats again, a situation that deescalated when the interspace transmitter-receiver tower picked up a holographic signal from Cybertron. The message it contained was from Straxus, who promised to aid the Earth-stationed Decepticons by sending them troops and materials over the recently built space bridge. Megatron and Shockwave agreed again to cooperate now that the possibility of conquering Earth and Cybertron was near. The Bridge to Nowhere! Shockwave had the Constructicons fortify the mining pit so as to make it a more suitable base. The timing was excellent too, since the Autobots opted to launch an attack not longer after. The new defenses kept the Autobots busy, though they still obtained data on Devastator's combiner technology, the secret goal of their attack. Moreso, Finkleberg found an opportunity to escape the base while the Autobots had the Decepticons preoccupied. The Autobots made a run for it once they were done, leading Shockwave to believe he had beaten them. Megatron snapped him out of his illusion, arguing that the Autobots must have had an ulterior reason for their attack and that he had been had big time. Shockwave agreed to that logic and acknowledged Megatron as the sole Decepticon leader. Command Performances! Still, Megatron's position was not secure as he had failed too. Not only did the Decepticons notice Finkelberg's escape, but a TV journalist announced that Robot-Master was an impostor and that she would prove it. Megatron, Soundwave and the Constructicons left the base to deal with this problem. In the National Interest

Upon their return to base, Megatron went over the latest developments regarding the war on Earth. His speech was interrupted when the time-travelling trio of Galvatron, Cyclonus and Scourge arrived. It was presumed for a moment that Straxus had sent them, but the three explained that they were actually from the future. Megatron saw them as a threat and attacked, but ended up buried with Soundwave under a couple of layers of rubble, after which Galvatron took command of the Constructicons. Since the three future Decepticons' time-jump had made three important Autobots disappear, the Autobots had come to the Decepticon base to see if their enemies had anything to do with it. As such, they witnessed Megatron's defeat and Galvatron's takeover. After Galvatron had proven too powerful to defeat with brute force alone, the Autobots saw no other option than to return to Wyoming, dig out Megatron and see if he'd be willing to lead them against their shared opponent. Megatron agreed to the deal, he and Soundwave joining the Autobots gathered in Autobot Headquarters. Thus the Decepticon base was deserted when Shockwave, Thundercracker and Frenzy returned there. Though curious where everyone was, they didn't have much time to ponder, as a time-jump by three future Autobots carried them off to Limbo. Target: 2006

With the aid of Bombshell and Soundwave, Megatron tapped energy from Optimus Prime's Creation Matrix when the latter used it to grant the Aerialbots life at Autobot Headquarters. The Decepticon leader simultaneously matrixed his Stunticons, soon after sending them out on a mission to reinforce the Autobots' bad reputation. Heavy Traffic! Next, Megatron summoned the Battlechargers to Earth via the space bridge and tasked them with the deliverance of a challenge for a duel to the death to Optimus Prime. Decepticon Graffiti! A rather one-sided conflict between Megatron and Motormaster on whether anyone but Megatron could defeat Optimus Prime caused the Earth-stationed Decepticons to realize Megatron was no longer fit to lead. Soundwave was the first to support Shockwave's leadership, manipulating Megatron in summoning the Predacons to Earth so that they could assist him in killing Optimus Prime. Shockwave requested them to kill Megatron instead in return for a better position in the Decepticon hierarchy, to which they accepted. The Predacons fought Optimus Prime and Megatron not too far from the base, accidentally sending them to Cybertron per space bridge. Prey! Since Megatron had not died, Shockwave was worried he'd return some day and take revenge. When the Decepticons noticed a large explosion not too far from their base, they thought Megatron had come back, but it was only Galvatron. Fallen Angel (issue) Meanwhile, a run-in with Straxus wiped Megatron's memories of his soldiers' betrayal and suppressed his obsession to see Optimus Prime dead, so when he did return he simply resumed his rule as if nothing had happened. Resurrection!

Following a mission that resulted in Optimus Prime's death and the obtainment of a hydrothermocline, the Earth-stationed Decepticons began planning to have at least part of their troops relocated to a new island base where the machine could be put to good use. Megatron let his troops handle this, as all he was interested in was moping he wasn't the one who got to kill Optimus Prime. He never even knew the current base had finally been completed through the addition of equipment with which contact with Cybertron could easily be maintained. Megatron's utter apathy in furthering the Decepticon cause was highlighted when finally the United States military got permission from the Intelligence and Information Institute to launch an attack on the mining pit. Megatron ignored Shockwave's concern that the humans might pose a threat and almost killled Brawl when the latter argued that in any case Optimus Prime was no longer a concern. Responding to Megatron's pliable mindset, Shockwave suggested Optimus Prime could very well have survived, setting off Megatron badly. He destroyed most of the base and only coincidentally scared the military into retreat. As he and most of the troops left to relocate to their one remaining base, Shockwave and Soundwave momentarily stayed behind to contact one of the deep space receiving towers on Cybertron, requesting the Predacons again to come to Earth and rid the faction of Megatron. Gone but Not Forgotten!
When Landquake, Breakaway, Topspin, and Heatwave made an attempt to use their powers to revive the recently-assassinated Megatron, they were transported—along with a revived Skyfall—to the presence of Primus in the "afterlife". He gave them a choice of living (or staying dead) as they were, or being reborn as what they were meant to be. After the gestalt members made their deliberations, Primus declared, "The choice is made.

Nexus Prime reformatted the dead Megatron into the powerful Galvatron, investing in him some of the power of the Thirteen. The two exited the Decepticon stronghold to counter Omega Doom's offensive, but they were forced to split up when Doom launched a starkilling missile into Cybertron's sun. Though his Decepticon components protested leaving the battle, Nexus Prime knew saving this Cybertron's star system was of more immediate importance. Regardless, he was too late in stopping the missile, and its energies began to destroy the sun. Nexus began to concentrate.

Nexus returned to Cybertron triumphant, having used his own powers to negate those of the starkilling missile, and he made short work of Omega Doom, saving Galvatron in the nick of time. Though there was more on this Cybertron to do, such as finishing Optimus Prime once and for all, Nexus Prime knew he had to leave for another universe. After saying goodbye to Cliffjumper, he entered a portal with Aquarius, trusting fate to bring him to the correct destination. Reunification: Part 6
Wings of Honor
Nexus Prime and Aquarius traveled from world to world, but without finding what Nexus Prime was looking for. Eventually, the pair arrived on a Cybertron where they were attacked by a group of smaller Decepticons who thought they had an easy mark. Though Nexus Prime was unwilling to use his more supernatural powers, lest he draw unwanted attention towards himself, he was still able to easily beat their attackers. As they left the group of dazed Decepticons behind, Nexus Prime and Aquarius wandered through a Cybertronian marketplace. Finally, Nexus Prime began to drop hints about what mysterious artifact he was looking for; he hadn't yet clued Aquarius in. Ultimately, Nexus Prime spotted a shipping container with an Elite Guard symbol on it. This unlocked a memory in the ancient Transformer, allowing him to determine their next destination. He and Aquarius vanished through another portal to yet another Cybertron, his future travels to be potentially unchronicled. The Coming Storm: Part 1
His combined form's head was retooled to give him a unique one, which is an amalgamation of visual elements of its components' own heads: Skyfall's eyes, Landquake's chin, Breakaway's forehead, Topspin's "mohawk", and Heatwave's "ears".

Notes
*It's hard to say what toyline Nexus Prime is from, as his components are from multiple franchises. How often does that happen?
*Nexus Prime's backstory bears a noticeable similarity to that of Voltron.
*Fun Publications stated at 2009 that the official limb arrangement for Nexus Prime is that of the configuration in his instructions. With Landquake as the right arm, Breakaway as the left arm, Topspin as the right leg, and Skyfall as the left leg. Why he was depicted in a different arrangement in the caverns around the Caretaker no one knows.
*Ironically, despite being labeled as an Autobot, a majority of the Transformers that make up Nexus Prime are Decepticons, albeit ones that are disenchanted by the Decepticon cause, misled by deceitful leaders, or a completely different kind of Decepticon.
*Nexus Prime's TFCC profile mentions that he "no longer has an alternate mode", due to being split apart for so long and then reassembled.
*With his components released one at a time, one per year, he's the combiner toy it took the longest to complete in an official capacity.

Naming Issues
Fun Publications originally submitted the possible names "Prime Nexus" and "Maximus Prime" to Hasbro for the character (reflecting the fact that the character is a Prime in-fiction), Hasbro rejected these, apparently because they are feeling protective towards the use of the name Prime (despite previously having approved the fiction that already named him a Prime, written by their own Forest Lee). Hasbro suggested merging the non-Prime segments of the two names instead... oops.

Apparently neither Hasbro nor Fun Publications did their research when naming Nexus Maximus, because there is another product which shares that name and was, as of May 24, 2009, the top Google result (this wiki page has since surpassed it). While it is definitely a "toy", it is most assuredly not intended for ages 5 and up. It's also probably not safe for work, so click here at your own risk. According to the Fun Publications Club panel at 2009, Hasbro did a search for the name with "safe search" on, causing them to not see... well, that.

When he finally appeared in person in fiction, his name was given as indeed being Nexus Prime. Which makes much better sense story-wise but deprives us of many cheap and easy joke opportunities. Pete Sinclair posted an image on the Transformers Collectors' Club forums of Aquarius blaming the "Nexus Maximus" name on a bad translation by Beta Maxx.

(The debate is still on as to whether Nexus Maximus constitutes a choking hazard.)

Just as weird is that there is a school in Brazil which is named Nexus Maximus. Adress and phone are given here, here and also here, if you have doubts.

*Nexus Maximus (2009)
:Nexus Maximus is composed of his five team members, with Heatwave forming his central body component. His limbs' energon weapons form his hands and feet. Similarly to Generation 1's Scramble City-type combiner teams, Nexus Maximus (as well as Superion Maximus, Bruticus Maximus and Constructicon Maximus) features universal connection points for the limbs, allowing many different combinations and even swapping of limbs from different teams. His combined form's head was retooled to give him a unique one, which is an amalgamation of visual elements of its components' own heads: Skyfall's eyes, Landquake's chin, Breakaway's forehead, Topspin's "mohawk", and Heatwave's "ears".

:Nexus Maximus is the combined form of the first five Transformers Collectors' Club freebie toys: Skyfall, Landquake, Breakaway, Topspin, and Heatwave.

Just as weird is that there is a school in Brazil with named Nexus Maximus. Adress and phone are given here, here and also here, if you have doubts.
