:The Grand Mal is a space ship in the Beast Machines portion of the Generation 1/Beast Era continuity family.

The Grand Mal is the vessel that served as Megatron's body during much of the second season of Beast Machines. It could change between a rarely-seen aircraft mode and, well, a big floating head (bearing a resemblance to Megatron's own ugly mug.)

:Japanese name: Megahead

Fiction
Beast Machines cartoon
Megatron had been working at length to purge his body of its biomechanical elements. In the midst of a cataclysmic confrontation with Optimus Primal, he apparently succeeded, splitting his organic components off into a separate entity (the purely biological Noble/Savage). His Spark, however, remained with the Noble/Savage portion, while his original robot form was destroyed by the combined forces that he and Primal had been unleashing.

Shortly afterwards, the Maximals encountered the Grand Mal, a giant version of Megatron's own head drifting empty, unmanned and lifeless above Cybertron. Apparently Megatron had been constructing it for some time in secret, but was unable to reach it before the destruction of his original body. Some time later, with the unwitting help of the Maximals, "Noble" was eventually able to re-enter the Council Citadel, where he transferred his Spark into the Grand Mal.

With Megatron's spark inside, the Grand Mal became as animate as the face of a normal Transformer, its mouth moving when Megatron spoke to others outside. To speak to his generals inside the big floating head, Megatron often manifested himself as a slightly smaller floating holographic head composed of Cybertronian symbols.

At some point, Megatron had the captured Sparks of Cybertron's missing population transferred from the Council Citadel to a massive cylindrical holding vessel within the Grand Mal.

When Megatron first attempted to enact his plan of consuming all the Sparks of Cybertron, his own Spark emerged from the Grand Mal -- an act which left him vulnerable to an attack by Nightscream. Nightscream's sonic blast left Megatron's Spark "depolarized", wandering madly about Cybertron without a body for a time. The Maximals occupied the empty Grand Mal and used it as their base, defending the captured Sparks of Cybertron's population that it contained.

In a subsequent battle, Megatron's Vehicons managed to match the shield harmonics of the Grand Mal and shoot it down. The ship crashed on top of the Council Citadel and was the site of the final battle between the Vehicons and Primal's team of Maximals. After the reformatting of Cybertron, its form remained visible, though covered with technorganic greenery.

Note: The Grand Mal was not named in the Beast Machines television series. The name comes from scripts and the short story Singularity Ablyss by series writer Bob Skir.

Beast Wars Returns
* Megahead Megatron (Deluxe, 2005)
: Japanese ID number: BR-12
:Megahead Megatron transforms into the Grand Mal with scuttling spider-leg action, opening jaw for chip-eating action, and a hidden spring-loaded missile launcher in its mouth. In robot mode, the launcher swings over his head, placing a battle mask down over his face.

: If one removes the toy's spider-legs in head mode, it fits into the head socket to the Fortress Maximus main body.

: The toy was originally intended to portray Megatron in the Beast Machines toy line, but was shelved for a year till it was used as Megatron Megabolt, part of the Robots In Disguise line. It was later used for Megabolt. Not till the Japanese edition did it finally appear as the character it was originally intended to portray.

Trivia
*Grand Mal is a type of seizure.
*Megatron had the Grand Mal in the works for quite some time -- schematics of it can be seen in the episode "Forbidden Fruit", early in Season One.
*In a nod to the original series, Rattrap refers to the uninhabited Grand Mal as "...a sparkless floating tribute to Unicron."
*The ship's aircraft mode is entirely fictional, relative to the toy, and is only seen once, when the vessel transforms to destroy Botanica's crashed ship.
*The Grand Mal's vehicle mode resembled the Darksyde. Megatron's ship from Beast Wars.
Original air date: May 6, 1999

Summary
The Maximals, secure for the first time since they moved into Mount St. Hilary, begin searching for the Predacons, who have been vulnerable since Tigerhawk destroyed the Darksyde. Optimus Primal quotes a verse from the Covenant of Primus, believing Tigerhawk's arrival to be divine prophesy. The Predacons are growing disaffected with Megatron (even Waspinator is mouthing off). Inferno, ever loyal to his "queen", declares that a new "colony" will resecure them. Megatron orders him to take Waspinator and Quickstrike, while he, Rampage, and Dinobot 2 search the remains of Tarantulas' lair. Dinobot finds a hatch which leads to an underwater tunnel, which in turn leads to something that greatly excites Megatron.

Silverbolt and Depth Charge spot Inferno, Waspinator, and Quickstrike leaving. Optimus orders them to fall back, but Depth Charge heads in. Optimus leaves with Blackarachnia, Cheetor, and Tigerhawk to support them. As Primal arrives, Depth Charge finds the hatch&mdash;and a bomb. The explosion fails to kill any of the Maximals, but Silverbolt is damaged, and Blackarachnia and Cheetor escort his parts back to base. At the Protohumans' cave dwellings, Inferno declares that the caves will be their new "colony". He orders Quickstrike and Waspinator to engage, but Waspinator angrilly refuses. Something has finally snapped in the Waspy's central processor, and he declares that he is out of the Beast Wars. After a tirade against Megatron, the Predacons, life in general, and always being blown up, Waspinator tells them that they can kiss his stinger. Inferno and Quickstrike blast him, and proceed to attack the Protohumans (who have become much tougher, having learned from the example of Dinobot and the Maximals).

In the tunnels, Primal, Tigerhawk, and Depth Charge continue searching. After locating a dataterminal, Primal accesses it, and discovers what Tarantulas found and Megatron desires&mdash;the Nemesis, the flagship of the Decepticon fleet and vessel which shot down the Ark. Realizing the threat the Decepticon warship holds, Depth Charge heads out to locate it. Meanwhile, Megatron and Dinobot find that Tarantulas modified the vessel with a transwarp cell, installed a Predacon control console, and left behind a Covenant of Primus to boot. Megatron and Dinobot begin powering up the vessel for an attack. Reaching the sunken behemoth, Depth Charge engages Rampage. The two enemies fight, and Depth Charge grabs an Energon crystal. Driving it into Rampage's spark, the explosion destroys both Transformers, and also causes Dinobot 2 to cry out in pain. Optimus, though mourning Depth Charge's loss, is relieved to know the threat of the Nemesis has been dealt with.

That is, until the Nemesis rises from the ocean, fully powered and targeting them. To be continued...

Quotes
*Waspinator: I said no! Dragon-Bot command you, Sub-Commander Kiss-Butt! Dragon-Bot not command Waspinator! Not any more! Waspinator sick of being evil! Sick of being Predacon! And Waspinator especially sick of getting blown to scrap all the time! Sooo, Waspinator quit! As of now, which means Ant-Bot and Two-Head can just pucker their mandibles and plant big, wet, juicy one right here on Waspinator's big . . . fat . . . stripy . . . <br>[Inferno and Quickstrike blow Waspinator to scrap]
But I think you're due some time in the CR chamber.<br>Silverbolt: Sir, I'm fine.
Notes
Technical/Animation glitches
* When Dinobot squeezes the piece of Rampage's spark he possesses to pacify his "half-brother", his shoulder pads are missing.

Continuity errors
* The flashback to the battle between the Ark and the Nemesis recounted by Optimus Primal and Megatron neglect to mention that the Decepticons boarded the Ark before the crash. This was probably done to either simplify the retelling, increase the significance of the Nemesis involvement, or both.
* Some fans state the inclusion of a space battle and the lack of a tractor beam is an error, but these elements (or lack of them) were only present in the animated series' version of the crash. Additional versions, such as the crash depicted in the Marvel Comics, did indeed have a space battle and there was no tractor beam. (In fact, the Nemesis did not crash, but instead it was parked beneath the ocean by Shockwave.) It should be mentioned that Beast Wars is not a direct continuation of any specific continuity by design, seeking to treat all previous Generation 1 stories as if they were Arthurian legend, so most claims of continuity error in the flashback would be fruitless.

Transformers references
*Megatron refers to Tarantulas as Unicron's spawn.
*This is the first source to give the Decepticon vessel that attacked the Ark a name.
*Optimus Primal tells Depthcharge to stop Megatron "No matter the cost" which echoes Optimus Prime in the Transformers movie during the Decepticon siege of Autobot City on Earth.

Real-world references
*Inferno calls Rampage a drone at least once in this episode. It is unknown whether the writers knew that a drone is a male ant whose main purpose is to mate with the queen, who in this case would be Megatron.
*When contacting the Maximals, Optimus contacts them by encoding transmission "M Sipher", a reference to Greg Sepelak.

Trivia
* The death of Rampage is the only time in the series that a Maximal kills a Predacon (not for lack of trying).
* Nemesis was originally going to be a three-part episode, but was later changed.fact
Dinobot makes the ultimate sacrifice to save those who are still to come.

Detailed synopsis
In a wild valley, a group of primitive hominids forage for food. A gargantuan snake attacks two of their number, and the protohumans are helpless to stop it...

At the Axalon, a haunted Dinobot meditates on his sword... and holds its blade ominously over his chest. But after a long moment of tension and hesitation, he casts it aside.

On the bridge, Rhinox announces that he's been calculating the path of the Transwarp Wave from the Planet Buster's destruction -- it's travelling through time at an accelerated rate, and will reach Cybertron in the "present". Optimus fears Megatron has made similar calculations, and the group realizes they need to increase their defenses.

Dinobot, still somber, runs into Rattrap, who rips him a new one over his turning the Disk over to Megatron. Dinobot is left to reflect that his actions cannot be undone... but may yet be "mitigated". He arms himself and heads off into the wastes.

Megatron and Rampage are out for a stroll, when Cheetor observes them. They drive him off with some damage, but Cheetor calls in the sighting to Dinobot, who promises to follow up.

At his lair, Tarantulas has captured a tasty antelope for his dinner. But as he creeps up to the struggling beast, Dinobot bursts out of the ground, holding him at gunpoint and demanding to know what information is on the Golden Disk. Tarantulas doesn't know -- there are no more copies remaining, and Megatron is keeping the Disk on his person at all times. Dinobot uses Tarantulas as his unwilling ride.

Megatron and Rampage have arrived at a particular mountain near the protohuman valley. Megatron is expecting visitors from Cybertron soon... but not if he can alter reality. He pulls out the disk and explains that it contains images recorded in the future, including one of the same mountain. Megatron has Rampage destroy the mountain, and the image on the disk changes to suit the altered reality. Dinobot observes all this with dawning dread: Megatron has the power to change the future.

The Predacon leader intends to change the outcome of the Great War in the Decepticons' favor... by destroying the protohumans and depriving the Autobots of an important ally race. The rest of the Predacons arrive, and begin a full assalt on the valley. While Dinobot's back is turned, Tarantulas blasts him; Dinobot reciprocates by squashing him under a rock. Dinobot contacts Optimus, who orders him to maintain position, but Dinobot knows there is no time to wait. He moves in to attack the entire Predacon force single-handed.

Dinobot is able to take out the Predacons, but he loses his weapons in the process, suffers considerable damage, and drains most of his energy supply, rendering his optic lasers unusable. Soon, it's just Megatron and Dinobot, who reveals a human captive. On his last bit of Energon, Dinobot plunges a rock into a stick, creating a makeshift hammer. He knocks the disk out Megatron's hand and then destroys it with his optic lasers, expending his last bit of energy. Megatron flees as the Maximals arrive, but it is too late for Dinobot. As he lays dying, Dinobot solidifies his friendship with Rattrap, and asks Optimus to tell the whole truth about him, the good and the bad, and allow him to be judged accordingly. With that, Dinobot's spark leaves his exostructure, and he dies.

The Maximals hold a funeral for Dinobot, dissolving his remains. At the valley, a curious protohuman finds Dinobot's hammer. He soon figures out how to use it to help gather food... and to fend off predators like the giant snake. Dinobot's actions have not only saved the protohumans, but also helped them take a step toward evolving into humanity.

General Cicadacon is a member of the Tripredacus Council.

A Predacon Elder, the cruel and clever Cicadacon is suspected of being very old, indeed. His knowledge of Cybertronian history, especially military history and tactics, is encyclopedic, stretching back even to the era before the Great War. Some suspect he may have once had a Decepticon identity, but if this is true, no records of that identity survive. Regardless of the truth of his origin, Cicadacon uses the stories and rumors to engender fear and respect in his followers. Despite his tactical genius, Cicadacon's long-term strategy against the Maximals has become increasingly unpopular with the more impatient Predacon forces.

He uses chopping rotor blades to spread plague-like destruction and combines with his fellow council members to form Tripredacus.
