The "RTM 1 dub" is the most correct name that can given to the hilariously bad English-language dubs of the Japanese Generation 1 animated series, The Headmasters, Super-God Masterforce, and Victory. The name comes from the Malaysian TV channel, RTM 1, on which the dubs originated, but they gained greator notoriety when they were later shown on the Singaporean channel StarTV, leading to the more popular (but somewhat misleading) monikers that fans refer to the dub by, the "Singapore dub" or the "Star TV dub".

Characteristics
The dub has gone down in infamy for a combination of reasons. Clearly produced by a small number of people with little knowledge of the source material and even less talent, the English translation is... rudimentary, at best. Although it is often touted as being wholly inaccurate, it actually manages to render the intent of the dialog correctly more times than not. It is, however, the way in which it proceeds to mangle the translation so much, with clumsy English, run-on sentences, non-sequiter lines and just generally inappropriate language, that creates its distinctive surreal, not to mention hilarious, qualities.

Generally speaking, the dub employs American names and terminology, but in some instances, the scriptwriter(s?) were apparently unable to find the correct equivalent, leading to the dub's single most famous attributem-its collection of new names for various characters and concepts. Some of these names are based on a misinterpretation of the Japanese pronunciation of the name, and some just pulled straight out of thin air. These ludicrous instances include:

*Blaster as "Billy"
*Metroplex as "Phillip"
*Blurr as "Wally"
*Spike Witwicky as "Sparkle"
*The Matrix as "The Power Pack"
*Energon cubes as "Power Packs"

The process proved especially difficult for the writers when the characters had no American equivalents. This only affected a few members of the Headmasters cast, who all wound up with new names. The Super-God Masterforce cast, on the other hand, were all re-named as their American toy-equivalent characters (Ginrai as Optimus Prime, Minerva as Nightbeat, etc.), while the Japanese-exclusive characters either managed to retain their original names (Overlord, Metalhawk) or followed tradition by winding up with looney new ones. The Victory characters, meanwhile, mostly managed to keep their Japanese names, but a few still managed to slip through the cracks. Wacky examples include:

*Soundblaster as "New Soundwave"
*Twincast as "Blaster"
*Raiden as "Grimlock"
*Both Sixknight and Greatshot as "Sixshot"
*Browning as "B.M."
*Jean Minakaze as "Meekon"
*Dashtacker as "Batchtaster"
*Holi as "Fixit"

We could go on like this.

Despite a cast of noticeably untalented voice actors, the actors were none-the-less professionals and have dubbed such other high-profile pieces of foreign media as the Heisei era Godzilla movies, Jackie Chan's Police Story, and Dragonball: The Magic Begins.

Ownership and releases
Sunbow legally acquired ownership of the RTM 1 dubs at some point, branding every episode with the Victory opening sequence (with the English word "Transformers" masked in over the title card) and English-language closing credits. These credits were rendered in the traditional font of the Generation 1 cartoon series, and even featured the Generation 1 closing theme tune. All 115 dubbed episodes are included in this Sunbow-modified form as part of the Transformers rights package for lisencees.

After circulating in the fandom for years via bootleg VHS tapes, the RTM 1 dubbed episodes of The Headmasters have been officially released on DVD in several forms, starting in the UK. Maverick Entertainment inclued "The Four Soldiers From the Sky" on their release of the movie, and later released the first six episodes of the series on a single DVD (albeit with cover art of Star Saber, thanks to the Victory opening confusing them). The next rights holders, Metrodome, included the same episode on their "Generation 1: Season 2, Part 2" boxset, and subsequently released a box set of the entire series in dual-language format. Madman Entertainment later released Metrodome's dual-language version in Australia.

The dubs of Super-God Masterforce and Victory have yet to be released on DVD, but along with The Headmasters, have aired in a late-night slot on the UK channel Anime Central. Additionally, footage from the Masterforce dub (mainly the episode recaps) were used as special features for Rhino's Transformers season 1 DVD set.
The genuine material's properties are unknown, save that it allows the creation of substances sturdier than normal Earthly ones for building servos and such. However, its Earth-made synthetic equivalent is incredibly unstable. Moving it at high speed makes it incredibly volatile, risking detonation within a matter of minutes.

Transformers Animated cartoon
While experimenting with robotic parts, Megatron (Animated) said to Professor Sumdac that in order to build his new body, he needed Destronium circuitry. Sumdac regretfully informed Megatron that Destronium doesn't come in such vast quantities on Earth as it must wherever Megatron comes from, but he'd been able to synthesize a small amount. However, by the time that sample was shipped to his lab from across town, it would be useless or highly explosive. The only way to avoid that would be to transport it in under 10 minutes. Megatron then hatched a scheme to use Prof. Sumdac's experimental turbo suit to transport the Destronium within the required time. Nanosec (episode)

Trivia
*Destronium is most likely derived from Destron, the Japanese name for the Decepticons. Considering that the Japanese name for the Autobots is Cybertron, it may even be a counterpart of sorts to Cybertonium, a slightly differently spelled substance from the Generation 1 cartoon which was critical for the proper functioning of Transformer bodies.
Like many Decepticon leaders, Thunderwing strikes a delicate balance between calm composure and explosive rage (what humans would call "bipolar tendencies"). Thunderwing wants to be admired and respected by his subordinates, but all too often he can be caught in a consuming obsession that leads him down the irreversible path of darkness, bringing his entire home plant to the brink of destruction in several universes.

Thunderwing was a driven Decepticon who rose quickly from relative obscurity to a command position in the ranks. He made a bid for full leadership of the Decepticons to the High Council, and they decided to test him with a hunting mission -- three Autobot prisoners were released on Earth, and Thunderwing was charged with chasing down and executing them on his own. While Playback and Horsepower did fall before his cyclone cannon, the last runner Hosehead was saved by his fellow Autobots Nightbeat and Siren. The Headmasters exploded the fuel core in Playback's corpse at close range to Thunderwing, nearly cooking him alive inside his own impenetrable Pretender shell. Shrieking in agony, Thunderwing plunged into the nearby surf. The Big Shutdown

Thunderwing eventually rose from the waters, his still-cooling shell juxtaposed with the growing intensity of his rage at being beaten. Thunderwing lashed out at everything around him, and very nearly destroyed a ship of his fellow Decepticons who had been sent to find him. As a duly appointed officer of the Decepticon High Council, Ruckus was sent to inform Thunderwing that his bid for leadership was not being rejected outright, but was still under review and the Councillors had asked that he return to Cybertron. Instead, Thunderwing violently conscripted Ruckus and his team into joining him for an assault on the Ark, in order to get revenge on Hosehead and his ilk. Thunderwing single-handed blasted his way into the Ark and confronted Optimus Prime directly, before Ruckus convinced him to save the fight for another day. Returning to Cybertron, Thunderwing was surprised to learn that the Decepticon High Council was impressed by his initiative and the strength of his vendetta, and granted him full leadership of the Decepticons of Cybertron. Rage! Assault on the Ark!

One of Thunderwing's first actions on taking over Decepticon leadership was to abolish neutral territories, making places such as Maccadam's Old Oil House Decepticon-only establishments. Out to Lunch

Lord Thunderwing became displeased with the growing success of Jazz, Grimlock, and Bumblebee and their raiding of Decepticon fuel depositories. He ordered Bludgeon, Octopunch and Stranglehold -- the Mayhem Attack Squad -- to find and kill the Autobot Pretenders.

At the beginning of the Matrix Quest, Thunderwing began to take matters into his own hands. After learning of the Matrix from some captured Autobots, he realized that it was the key to power beyond comprehension. His obsession with finding the Creation Matrix caused some concerns for the Decepticons under his command (as they did not know of the Matrix's true power), he even attacked his own troops when accused of taking his personal quest too far.

It was at this time that Thunderwing revealed that he was one of the select few Transformers, and indeed, the only known Decepticon, to possess a natural affinity for the Matrix. He was one of the very few who could actually use the powers of The Matrix. (Whether this makes him an actual Matrix Templar like Snarl or Hot Rod is unclear.)

After forming a psychic link with an immense whale-like alien called a Kludd whom had been restored from the brink of extinction by the Matrix's power, Thunderwing learned where the Matrix was last seen: the third moon of Cameron. Thunderwing immediately set out to retrieve it, much to the disapproval of his troops.

As it would happen, between the revival of the Kludd and the arrival of Thunderwing, The Creation Matrix had become warped. A dying alien "Deathbringer" had touched the Matrix, and was fully healed and recreated by its power. This malevolent entity gave The Matrix its first taste of evil. Later, another creature found the Matrix: a parasitic insect which existed purely to kill and destroy. The Matrix, now quite fascinated by the nature of darkness, restored and improved the creature, considering it to be the single most evil creature it had ever seen. This new creature was referred to as the Matrix Spawn and would serve as its vessel.

Meanwhile, the Autobot Pretenders, having escaped from the Mayhem Attack Squad, arrived on Cameron after hearing the reports of a research team on that moon. The researchers had discovered an incredible power source inside Optimus Prime's old body -- shortly before being slaughtered by the Matrix Spawn creature. The Autobots could only assume that the described "power source" was the Creation Matrix.

When Thunderwing arrived on Cameron, he attacked the Autobot Pretenders. The battle was pre-empted by the arrival of the Matrix Spawn however. Thunderwing, possessing a natural affinity for The Matrix, managed to catch The Spawn off guard, causing it to flee with Thunderwing in pursuit.

The Spawn fled straight to the Matrix, where it met Thunderwing in mortal combat. The Spawn was defeated, and the Matrix was Thunderwing's prize.

In the final issue of the Matrix Quest mini-series, Thunderwing, using his new found power as a result of having the Matrix, moved to the Ark with the intention of destroying the Autobots.

After nearly beating Optimus Prime using the power of the matrix, the other Decepticons under Thunderwing's command realized how completely Thunderwing had fallen, and turned against him. After being damaged by one of the Pretenders, the true scope of relationship between The Matrix and Thunderwing was revealed. The Matrix's newly found evil influence was even enough to dwarf Thunderwing's own judgement, and was controlling him!

After Thunderwing (or "The Vessel" as the Matrix called him) was damaged, The Matrix manifested itself as an immense spectral demon. This new entity proved to be too much for both Autobots and Decepticons to handle. After seeing what he had become, Thunderwing struggled to break free of The Matrix's control. While the Thunderwing/Matrix demon was distracted, the course of the battle shifted.

During the turmoil, the Autobots who had been captured by Thunderwing earlier in the Matrix Quest story-line had gotten free. Nightbeat managed to fire the Decepticon ship's grappling hook into Thunderwing's shoulder. They then launched the ship out of the Ark, and detonated it, apparently destroying both Thunderwing and the Matrix. This saved all the Transformers on board, but left no method for defending themselves from the coming threat of Unicron.

Only when Unicron finally arrived on Cybertron, did the corrupted Matrix and Thunderwing reappear. Despite now being corrupted and enraptured by the nature of darkness, The Matrix was created to destroy Unicron. It could not deny this aspect of its existence.

Sensing its ancient nemesis, The Matrix rebuilt Thunderwing, who promptly sped to Cybertron. Unfortunately, because the Matrix was now a product of evil, it had no effect upon Unicron, who destroyed the Decepticon completely with a massive burst of energy, ending Thunderwing's career permanently. On the Edge of Extinction!
According to Bludgeon, his warnings were ignored, even by Jetfire.

Subsequently, Thunderwing took action on his own, subjecting himself to a "polydermal grafting" process of his own design, one that had previously been summarily rejected by Megatron as "unnatural" and "ill-concieved." This process, of grafting tissue culled from living subjects onto a Transformer to create an armored symbiotic carapace, somehow also appears to have made him the avatar of the very apocalypse he had warned against. The process drove Thunderwing insane but made him invulnerable; even the combined might of the Autobots and Decepticons coudn't stop him. In the end, he was swallowed whole by Cybertron itself, leaving the planet completely uninhabitable.

When Shockwave went missing, Megatron assigned Bludgeon to dig into his research and find out what he was up to. An indeterminate time later, Thunderwing's resting place was discovered by a group of Decepticons led by Bludgeon, who planned to continue where Thunderwing left off. The project was completed in the present day, using a combinaton of "Ultra-Energon" (culled from Shockwave's research) and a set of imprinted commands. Thunderwing was thus resurrected, and immediately departed for Nebulos following Bludgeon's plans to sacrifice that world to somehow restore Cybertron. There, Thunderwing was engaged by the Decepticon Infiltration team in place, which did not want to see Nebulos completely destroyed. After Thunderwing totalled Crankcase, Ruckus, and Roadgrabber, the survivors, Dreadwind, Darkwing, and Thrust, abandoned the planet, leaving Thunderwing alone. However, after the destruction of Bludgeon's control harness, Thunderwing changed course - back towards Cybertron.

There, he was attacked by Optimus Prime, the Wreckers, the Predacons, and reprogrammed Centurion drones. Jetfire revealed that enough punishment would eventually cause Thunderwing to drain most of his Energon reserves. However, Thunderwing revealed a third "Ultra" robot configuration. Thanks to the Wreckers, the Decepticons, the instability of Ultra Energon, and a speech/salvo combination from Optimus Prime, he was stopped dead in his tracks. His inanimate form was taken into custody by the Autobots. Stormbringer (comics)
Galvatron would later steal Thunderwing's body from Hound's detail of Autobots, in service of his master in the Dead Universe. The inner robot is relatively generic in appearance (as with most Pretenders) while his outer Pretender shell resembles an alien warrior, armed with two large blasters.

One way that non-Transformer species seem to have influenced Cybertronian culture is the relatively rare occurrence of Transformers wearing clothing.

Capes
From time to time, some high ranked Cybertronians tend to wear capes. Presumably they are a symbol of office, as only generals, commanders, and other such leaders have been seen sporting them. Exactly what material these capes are made from is unknown, but one presumes that Earth-style fabrics are likely extremely rare on Cybertron (which could make the capes even more special, considering).

* Starscream wore a cape, large shoulder pads, and a crown at his coronation as Decepticon leader

* The Nine Great Demon Generals mostly wore capes, except Trypticon, who wore a Batman-like cowl in the Zone Story Pages.

* Armada Scavenger wore a large, body-obscuring cloak when he first arrived on Earth.

Trenchcoats
Quite a few characters have been depicted wearing trenchcoats, mostly when involved in detective work or similarly secretive activity.

* Nightbeat has been drawn quite a few times wearing a trenchcoat and fedora, due to their connection with detective fiction.

* The Micromaster Air Patrol wore trenchcoats and fedoras while trying to pass as human professional wrestlers. Interestingly enough, these coats somehow obscured large physical protrusions on their bodies (jet intakes, wings, etc.).

Others
* Six-Speed's curiosity about human clothing led him to examine the closets of his human friends Bud and Coby. However, his attempt to dress like a human basically amounted to putting random articles of clothing on his limbs, looking more ridiculous than clothing-wearing- Transformers normally do.
* The Jointron brothers have been shown wearing ponchos and sombreros, as well as using banjos and maracas.
*The Space Mini-Con Team and <i>Armada</i> Grindor have disguised themselves as humans using large heavy jackets, coats, baseball caps, hats, sunglasses, and other items of clothing to try to blend in with other people in robot mode.

Decepticlones are largely autonomous and display no sentience, though some models have a higher degree of artificial intelligence and combat skill, attempting to evade enemy attacks or use stealth in their approach. Also, most Decepticlones show no signs of transformation capability. Hound was one of the original Autobots aboard the Ark when it crash-landed on Earth four million years ago. When awakened in 1984, he was reformatted to have a terrestrial alt-mode, that of a Mitsubishi military jeep.

As the Autobots got their bearings on this strange new planet, Optimus Prime dispatched Hound on a recon mission to find the Decepticons. The impetuous Cliffjumper tagged along uninvited, and itching to start a fight, took a pot-shot at Megatron once Hound sniffed out the Decepticon base. Cliffjumper missed, and the Decepticons gave chase. Laserbeak pursued the two Autobot eavesdroppers, and Hound took the brunt of the assault, getting blasted by Laserbeak's cannons. Hound spun out of control on the winding mountain roads, and crashed into a ravine.

Cliffjumper returned with help: the Autobot medic, Ratchet. Hound was too injured to even transform, so the crane truck Hauler had to lift him out of the gulch so he could be dragged back to the Ark for repairs. Despite the mishap, Hound bore no ill-will against Cliffjumper. The scout had heard enough about the Megatron's plans to plunder the Earth's resources that Optimus immediately launched a mission to stop the Decepticons. More Than Meets the Eye, Part 1

The label 'brat punk' isn't completely inaccurate. Rumble is your basic street punk. Small, but always acting tough as a cover. Quick tempered and of a generally mean disposition, he follows Megatron eagerly. Rumble has a tendency to toss out a taunting rhyme at his enemies and is, according to Brawn, a "jerk".

As the Decepticon demolitions expert, Rumble loves nothing more than to break things apart. His arms can transform into powerful piledrivers that, when pounded against the ground, can cause earthquakes, usually with fissures. He can be easily overpowered in a one-on-one match, though the real challenge, however, is actually getting to him first.
(Events in italics occur in UK-only stories.)

Rumble's achievements in the comic amounted to not being able to see humans because they were too small, and getting his chassis handed to him by Omega Supreme. It took him a very long time to get better.

Animated continuity
:Voice Actor: Frank Welker (English), Keiichi Nanba (Japanese -- See note below.)

(In the Japanese dub, the lesser-seen red Decepticon cassette, or our Frenzy, was indicated to be Rumble to more accurately reflect his toy colors.)

Rumble was one of the original Decepticon raiding party that crashed into Earth four million years ago aboard the Ark. Reawakened in 1984, he was reformatted into an audio cassette that fit snugly into Soundwave's chest compartment. Despite his small size (he was usually shown to be about the height of a tall human), he seemed to be on equal footing with most other Decepticons. No doubt this was due to his seismic power, which was used quite often (including once by Megatron when he had borrowed Rumble's power chip rectifier). A common Decepticon tactic was to use Rumble to use his earth-shaking abilities to agitate hydroelectric power sources, as the Decepticons did at Sherman Dam and Great Falls.

Assisted by his diminutive stature, Rumble was also responsible for stealing some of the cars that would later become the Stunticons.

Rumble was effectively doubled by his bodytype-brother Frenzy. Both had identical voices, personalities and abilities, though Rumble appeared alone more often than not.

Fairly prominent in Seasons One and Two, his appearances dwindled after the start of Season Three.
: Rumble was part of the first wave of Transformers toys releaed in 1984. Using the same mold as a Microchange Microcassette Robo Micro, he was packaged with Ravage by Hasbro in 1984-1986, and with Soundwave by Takara from 1985-1986, and by himself in 1987.

Trivia
*On the G1 TV series, Rumble was represented with the colors of Frenzy's toy - that is, dark and medium blue, rather than red and black (and vice versa). This led to some confusion (and later, controversy) amongst fans. (See RIBFIR.)
:Hot Rod is an Autobot in the Generation 1 continuity family. He has also been known as Rodimus Prime, Rodimus, and Rodimus Major.

Hot Rod is brash and headstrong, with an overwhelming self-confidence that borders on arrogance. Kup has assumed the role of mentor and advisor to the impetuous young Hot Rod, offering him wisdom and advice when he needs it (though Hot Rod rarely feels that he does, much to Kup's annoyance). Arcee, a female Autobot, also serves as a calming influence on Hot Rod, and tends to either worry about him when he is not around, or deride and tease him when he is. Their relationship is antagonistic, but friendly. Exactly how deep Hot Rod's feelings for Arcee might run is unknown, whether they be friendly, romantic, or otherwise.

In contrast, his Rodimus Prime persona - while still headstrong and stubborn - seems to suffer from a severe lack of confidence, often doubting his own decisions and expressing distress over his position as an Autobot leader. Of course, much of this comes from having immediately succeeded leadership from Optimus Prime, and shoes-to-be-filled don't get much bigger than that.

One thing that both sides of this Autobot's identity have in common is their impatience - neither Hot Rod nor Rodimus Prime can stand to wait around when they could be doing something instead. He is also very self-reliant, rarely sending others to do anything when he could be doing it himself.

His Targetmaster partner is Firebolt.
Animated continuity
:Voice actors: Judd Nelson → Dick Gautier (US); Hiroya Ishimaru (Japan)

Hot Rod was one of the many Autobots based in Autobot City, on Earth. He was close friends with the young human Daniel Witwicky, and seemed to have a reputation for being something of a trouble-maker, judging from a few of Kup's comments to him at the time. Realising that the Decepticons were invading, Hot Rod opened fire on their stolen shuttle and exposed their ruse before Megatron could enter the city. Although this did give the rest of the Autobots time to begin transforming Autobot City and raising their defences, it also left Hot Rod trapped outside with Kup and Daniel. After defeating the Decepticons Blitzwing and Shrapnel with some help from Kup, Hot Rod managed to find a way inside the fortress city and took part in its defense. During Optimus Prime's battle with Megatron, Hot Rod intervened in an attempt to help, but succeeded only in giving Megatron the chance he needed to mortally wound the Autobot leader.

After Prime's death, Autobot City was attacked again - by Galvatron. While escaping, Hot Rod and Kup (and the Dinobots) were seperated from the rest of the Autobots and crashed on the planet Quintessa. There, Hot Rod met the Quintessons, an enemy who would haunt him for some time later. After escaping their sadistic trial and attempted execution (as well as meeting Wheelie), Hot Rod went on to the planet Junk, where he was just in time to stop Wreck-Gar from destroying the rest of the Autobot City refugees with a timely use of the Universal greeting. Together, they all travelled to Cybertron to stop Unicron before he could eat more than just its moons.

Inside of Unicron, Hot Rod was seperated from the rest of his team when their ship crashed (something which happens to Hot Rod a lot). Alone, he found himself facing Galvatron in a battle to the death over the Autobot Matrix of Leadership. Claiming the Matrix, Hot Rod evolved into "Rodimus Prime", an older, larger, and more powerful version of himself, and used the power of the Matrix to destroy both Galvatron and Unicron once and for all (supposedly).

Peace reigned on Cybertron for at least long enough to put up some of the more important buildings, and Rodimus Prime began to ease into his role as the new Autobot leader. When Ultra Magnus and Spike Witwicky were kidnapped during a peace celebration, it was Rodimus who spied on the Decepticons with Grimlock to determine if they were the ones who had done it. The way Rodimus had it figured, the Decepticons were usually behind everything anyway, so they seemed like a good enough place to start. After getting caught and severely beaten by the Decepticons (who were innocent of the kidnapping, but not really fans of his anyway), Rodimus was able to interface with the Matrix and learned about the origins of the Transformer race. He also learned that his old enemies, the Quintessons, were back and looking to destroy every Transformer in existence. Making things worse, Galvatron soon returned as well, and the war that everyone had assumed was safely over quickly started up again.

During this period, Rodimus Prime's greatest achievements both revolved around his predecessor, Optimus Prime. While fleeing from a Decepticon attack, Rodimus and several other Autobots took refuge in a massive Autobot crypt and discovered that their former leader seemed to have returned to life. Perhaps a little too trusting of Optimus (and possibly eager to relieve himself of the burden of leadership), Rodimus quickly passed the Matrix back to Optimus and, much to his glee, reverted back into Hot Rod. His happiness was short-lived, however, as Optimus was quickly revealed to be nothing more than a puppet of the Quintessons, sent to trick the Autobots into an ambush from which none of them would escape. With no other choice, Hot Rod was forced to do battle with Optimus Prime for the fate of the Autbots. Although their duel was clearly in the favour of the more powerful Optimus, Hot Rod was able to re-awaken the true spirit of his leader. Returning the Matrix to Rodimus, Optimus then piloted his ship into the heart of the ambush and sacrificed himself to save them all.

Or so it had seemed at the time. As was so often the case for Rodimus, things did not quite wrap up as tidily as he might have hoped. Far from being destroyed, Optimus had been retrieved by a team of human scientists who were hoping to use him (again) as a weapon against the Autobots - this time as the bearer of a malignant "Hate Plague" that would cause them to destroy each other. When he learned of this, Rodimus swiftly formed a rescue party and led them to retrieve Optimus' body so that their former leader could rest in peace. When all of the rest of the Autobots with him were exposed to the Hate Plague, only Rodimus was able to escape unharmed - and with the still uninfected body of Optimus. Returning to Autbot City, Rodimus ordered Sky-Lynx to find a Quintesson to repair Optimus, then risked his life to shut down Metroplex before the Plague could spread to it. Attacked by Ultra Magnus and Wreck-Gar in the process, he succumbed to the plague and became infected with hate. In order to stop the Plague, the resurrected Optimus had to defeat the crazed Rodimus and forcibly extract the Matrix from him, changing him back into Hot Rod once more. This time, as Optimus had decided to stick around, the change was somewhat more permanent. Somewhat.

"Rebirth" miniseries (America-only)
Even after losing his position as Autobot leader, Hot Rod was not the sort to rest on his laurels. Among other things, he was instrumental in championing the idea of human/Transformer binary bonding, a technique that later resulted in the Headmasters and Targetmasters. Hot Rod himself became one of the latter, bonding himself to a Nebulan named Firebolt.

Headmasters (Japan-only)
(The Headmasters anime skips the events which occurred in the 3-part "The Rebirth" story arc)

After the events of "The Return of Optimus Prime", Hot Rod maintained a high-level position among the Autobots as well as a new sense of duty and responsibility. After Vector Sigma was under threat of explosion, Hot Rod raced all over Earth trying to find the Matrix, which was still being repaired after its confrontation with the Hate Plague. Hot Rod eventually found the Matrix in a hiding place on Earth and rushed it back to Cybertron. Racing down to Vector Sigma, he met up with Optimus Prime and the ghost of Alpha Trion. Alpha Trion repaired the Matrix fully and Hot Rod transformed back into Rodimus Prime. Together, Optimus and Rodimus fought side-by-side to defeat Galvatron and his goons. However, to save Vector Sigma, Optimus Prime sacrified his life by merging with the super computer.

Rodimus became Autobot Supreme Commander once more and continued to lead the Autobots against the Decepticons. However, once again, Vector Sigma came under threat of destruction. However, he was unable to save it this time but managed to evacuate all of Cybertron before it was destroyed. In search of a new homeworld, Rodimus, Kup and Blurr left the planet. Arcee asked if she could go, too, but Rodimus made her stay behind because she's a girl, and girls can't do anything but stand around and worry and make coffee for the men.

Japanese manga
In the concluding chapter of the Headmasters manga, issue number 8, Rodimus Prime returned from his journey in space. During his quest, he faced many dangers and hardships and learned a new admiration for the human race and the planet Earth. His trials also increased the power of the Matrix, which he had taken with him on his journey.

Battlestars: Return of Convoy (Japan-only)
Rodimus would not appear again until Battlestars, where he was shown to have reverted back to Hot Rod and now been converted into a Micromaster. As a Micromaster, Hot Rod took up residence in Star Convoy's chest, boosting his Supreme Commander's power.

(Note: Hot Rod's Micromaster body leaves fans to believe that the new homeworld he went searching for ended up being Planet Micro, which was featured prominantly in Transformers Victory.)
Generation 2
Dreamwave comics continuity
Hot Rod joined an underground Autobot cell led by Kup after Shockwave's takeover of Cybertron. Among the members of the cell was Arcee, who Hot Rod became attached to.

From the Wastelands, Hot Rod, Blurr, and Springer observed an incoming Decepticon shuttle carrying the Dinobots. Shortly afterwards, the cell rescued Optimus Prime from Runamuck and Runabout, and took him to their base. After awakening, Prime attacked Gnaw, Blurr, and Wheelie, forcing Hot Rod (who didn't recognize him) to hold him at gunpoint. After being admonished by Kup, Hot Rod apologized.

After Shockwave unleashed the Guardian Robots on Iacon, Prime organized the resistance cell and other Autobot forces on the planet in an assault on Shockwave's citadel. Fighting alongside the Autobot leader, Hot Rod was amazed that the stories Kup had told him about Prime's courage and heroism had all been true. As an injured Prime breached the citadel, Hot Rod, Ironhide and Springer provided cover fire, taking down a number of Guardians in the process. Along with the rest of Iacon, they witnessed the divine light of the Autobot Matrix of Leadership when Shockwave activated it.

As Prime and Ultra Magnus battled Shockwave within the citadel, Hot Rod and Grimlock took down Astrotrain and Blitzwing. Immediately afterwards, they were confronted with the looming threat of a remaining Guardian Robot - a threat that was soon neutralized by the arrival of the Wreckers, the Autobot High Council, and Defensor. The unified Autobot group soon breached the citadel.

Some time later, Hot Rod ran a simulation combat scenario against Kup, and won using tactics that, in Kup's opinion, would have killed them both had it been real. Only after his victory did Hot Rod remember that he'd promised to take Arcee to see an Earth-bound shuttle launch - a duty Springer was happy to relieve him of. Soon afterwards, he was assigned to perimeter guard duty at Autobase with Gnaw and Wheelie, separating him from Arcee.

Universe: The Wreckers
A few months after the destruction of Unicron in 2005, Rodimus Prime spearheaded an effort to establish multiple recon posts to watch for advancing threats... even though some of his scientists said he shouldn't. When only two of the five launched ships were ever heard from again, Rodimus felt like a schmuck. Guy can't catch a break. Betrayal

After the Great Wars ended and the Pax Cybertronia was signed, he changed his name to simply "Rodimus" and decided to check out the new "Maximal upgrade". His relationship with Arcee effectively ended shortly after, as the latter went through dark gripping emo depression over the death of Daniel Witwicky and vanished.

Rodimus joined the Wreckers at some undetermined point afterwards. After Megatron took over Cybertron with his Vehicon drones, Wrecker leader Apelinq got stranded on prehistoric Earth, leaving Rodimus in charge. True to form, he ditched leadership duties to Primal Prime as soon as possible.

After Primal Prime got his marching orders from the Oracle, he met Rodimus deep inside Cybertron's caverns, where an even more gothy-emo Arcee --in a new Maximal body-- lurked and stewed in her depression. Realizing he couldn't convince her to give a damn about anything, he left, rejoining the main Wrecker force in battle. Making it onto an ancient Autobot shuttle, the Wreckers blasted off.... with late-arrival Arcee. Departure

Rodimus recognized the homing beacon emitting from Archa Nine as one of those missing exploration parties mentioned before. When the shuttle landed, Rodimus stayed behind to help repair the damage the ship had suffered. The entire Wrecker team later gathered in an Akalouthan village, where Rodimus was reuinted with Glyph, who took them to see the artifact known as the Divine Light. The Wreckers' analysis of the item was cut short, as it was stolen by the traitor Cyclonus. Rodimus saw the back-in-his-old-body Devcon off, who was sent to chase after Cyclonus, while the Wreckers made for their next destination... even though several of them were now leery of the visions Primal Prime had been getting. Because they've really done so well by the Wreckers so far. Betrayal

Upon landing on the frozen planet, Rodimus was part of the search party immediately dispatched to look for... something. Primal Prime wasn't too sepcific. They came across Al-Badur, an exiled Quintesson, who gave them a little history lesson. They were then promptly attacked by a school of Sharkticons, but the Wreckers made short work of them. they made their way back to the ship, with Al-Badur in tow, and made for their next destination... Disclosure

(Note: As the comic series ended prematurely here, it is unknown how things went. The Wreckers series was intended to end shortly afterwards and tie directly into the Universe comic, but it never happened.)
Hot Rod (in his Micromaster form) rescued Teletraan 15 from a strange mechanical monster, a Novaroid. Teletraan 15 noted that Hot Rod was considerably smaller than she remembered him.

Irked, Hot Rod laid the blame for the transwarp holes in space-time on 15. It was through these holes that this future/alternate version of Hot Rod and the Novaroid had arrived in Teletraan 15's time.

Things probably turned out allright from that point.

Following the death of Optimus Prime and the defeat of Unicron, Hot Rod became Rodimus Prime, the new leader of the Autobots. However, when his defeat of Galvatron led to a calamitous disaster on Earth, he gave up the Matrix to Ultra Magnus, reverted to Hot Rod once more and returned to the human homeworld.

Damaged by the E.D.C.'s anti-electron field, Hot Rod fused with a Legion and was reformatted into a Ford GT body by a kiss from the former Earth Defense Command Kiss player Lǐ Shāo-Shāo. Now, partnered with the kung-fu mistress, he travels around Japan battling the E.D.C., Legion, and the resurrected Optimus Prime.

Hot Rod is cocky and confident in his speed and sharpshooting skills, and weathers his human partner's complaints that he's slacking off on his hand-to-hand combat training. He would much prefer to practice kissing, and the resulting fusion grants him Shāo's considerable martial arts skills as well as the ability to wield his firearms as tonfas. In return, he steals underwear for her.

He enjoys fishing and carries a customized rod that can be converted into a forearm-mounted weapon called the "Exhaust Eliminator". Shāo-Shāo doesn't like working with him after a fishing trip due to the smell, but she secretly wishes that he would take her with him anyway. Hot Rod is also suspicious of Optimus Prime, and claims that he is not the real Optimus, presumably because he still believes his former commander to be dead following the battle of Autobot City.

Hot Rod has the distinction of being the only known robot with a Kiss Player partner to have lips. This may contribute to Shāo's feelings of excitement when she kisses him, though the rest of the time she's a bit outraged that a robot would have the audacity to talk to her like a person.
* Hot Rod (Autobot Car, 1986/2000/2002)
: Japanese ID number: C-78

: Hot Rod was one of the first toys designed specifically for the Transformers toyline, versus being an imported pre-existing toy. Designer Floro Dery created Hot Rod for the animated film and then the toy was created from his model sheet. (The model sheet would be altered further after the toy was completed.) Hot Rod transforms from a robot into a "futuristic" hot rod sportscar. The toy comes with two rifles. There are two versions of this toy; initial releases have die-cast (unpainted) metal feet, while later shipments use black plastic.

: In 2000, Takara re-released the Hot Rod toy, having had to retro-retool it from the Targetmaster release. In 2002, Hasbro released it as part of the Toys 'R' Us exclusive Commemorative Series line as Rodimus Major. Both versions use die-cast metal for his feet.

: The same mold is used by Black Rodimus.

* Rodimus Prime (Autobot Hero, 1986/2004)
: Japanese ID number: C-77

: Rodimus Prime was designed in much the same way as Hot Rod. Rodimus transforms from a robot and battle platform into a futuristicky Winnebago camper. The toy comes with a "Photon eliminator" rifle and two blast shields to attach to either side of his battle platform's cannon. (The yellow spoiler was also to be removed and replaced during transformation.) Like Hot Rod, there are materials variations; initial releases have metal toes with rubber tires, while latter shipments replaced both with black plastic.

: The metal-toes/rubber-ties version of the toy saw re-release in both Japan and the US in 2004.

: This mold is also used by Primus.

* Hot Rod w/ Firebolt (Targetmaster, 1987/2004)

: Hot Rod was re-released with his new Nebulan Targetmaster partner Firebolt a year after the original release. The toy was retooled to have larger pegholes in his fists and his engine block so the Targetmaster gun would fit. Latter versions of this toy retooled his lower legs to minimize the scraping of his thigh decals.

: Takara reissued Targetmaster Hot Rod in 2004 as sort of an "ultimate" version, with metal toes (the original versions all used plastic) and the twin rifles from the non-Targetmaster version.

*Crystal Rodimus (Autobot Car, 2001)
: Japanese ID number: C-78C

: One of the earliest e-Hobby exclusives, "Crystal" Rodimus uses the reissue Hot Rod mold, but cast almost entirely in transparent plastics. He was availbale only in a set with the evil clone Black Rodimus.

: Available only with Star Convoy, Hot Rod's Micromaster form is a simplified version of his original toy, transforming into the same futuristic race car. In 2005, Star Convoy was re-released with several deco changes; among them, the decals used on Hot Rod were changed to paint applications.

: In a twist of delicious buttery fandom irony, Classics Rodimus has elements that were introduced in his Energon namesake, making him a somewhat backwards-homage. ==Trivia==

* The original Hot Rod toy was initially cast in a pinker plastic similar to the color of his animation model. For unknown reasons, this was later changed to a decidedly less show-accurate red before release, but the earlier version of the toy is visible in the original 1986 Hasbro toy catalogue, and the televised Sharkticon toy advert.

* A new Rodimus Prime was devised for the 1991-1992 lineup, however this one did not leave the drawing board. He was to be a fire truck, apparently with a design in the spirit of Star Convoy and with transformation scheme similar to Inferno.

* Hot Rod might be the Transformers character with the most names in the US. From "Hot Rod" to "Rodimus Prime", to "Rodimus Major" to just plain "Rodimus". Varieties of "Rodimus" appear to be how he will be for a while, as Hasbro appears to be unable to secure the trademark on "Hot Rod".

* Aside from the Energon namesake character, Hot Rod has also been homage'd twice (or possibly thrice depending on how you look at it) in the Unicron Trilogy. For Armada, the "Powerlinx" upgrade of Hot Shot was given a very Hot-Rod-inspired deco. In Cybertron, Takara made a redeco of Hot Shot (well, "Exillion") with Hot Rod deco as a DVD-pack-in exclusive. Hasbro then took this deco, altered it, and released it in the US line at mass retail as the new character Excellion.

* One of the first concepts for Classics Rodimus was based around the Pagani Zonda super car, before the Dome Zero design was decided upon.

* At Botcon 2002, Dick Gautier "confirmed", jokingly, that Rodimus Prime is gay.

Silverbolt's character is defined by his extreme fear of heights and by his refusal to bow to it. He constantly struggles to project the image of a brave, determined soldier to hide his fear from others. Optimus Prime named him leader of the Aerialbots in the hopes that worring about them would give him something else to focus on besides his own phobia. This has proven true and, not surprisingly, the mature, responsible Silverbolt makes an excellent commander.

He can combine with his fellow Aerialbots to form the torso of Superion.
Animated Continuity
Silverbolt was constructed out of a low-flying cargo transport vessel, which was modified to resemble an Earthen jet. He was later given life by Vector Sigma, along with the other Aerialbots, then returned to Earth with the Autobots via Omega Supreme. It was soon discovered that Silverbolt had a crippling weakness: an intense fear of heights, due to his low-altitude origins. Conversely, he was the only Aerialbot who wasn't a complete jerk. Because of this, Optimus made him commander of the Aerialbots, reasoning that it would give him something to worry about other than his acrophobia. He proved worthy of this role when he persuaded his teammates, who had decided to desert, to return to the Autobots and protect humanity by showing them how Sparkplug was able to disregard his fatigue at will due to his concern for Omega Supreme's well-being, something robots cannot do.

Marvel Comics
The Aerialbots were created when Bumblebee filmed Devastator's combining sequence. Using the Autobot Matrix of Leadership, Optimus Prime gave the Aerialbots life. The leader, Silverbolt's alternate mode is that of a human transport airplane. After given life and during testing, Prime ordered them to stop the Decepticon assault on the Hoover Dam.

The fight went well, but Air Raid used his super-sonic ability to bring out a Transformer's deepest fear, it warped Silverbolt's fear of heights (ironic for an Aerialbot) and forced him to land. The Aerialbots prevailed the fight, however, and as the Decepticons fled, Silverbolt combined them all to form Superion, trying to stop the drill from absorbing all of the Hoover Dam's electricity.

Superion's reflex was to strike out and kill the human who held Megatron in his Gun Form, but Silverbolt stepped in and prevented him from doing so. He forced the Aerialbots to disassemble. The human fired Megatron's gun at the drill, winning the day for the Autobots.

Nonetheless, Silverbolt's mind was wiped along with his fellow Aerialbots shortly afterwards, due to Optimus Prime's dissatisfaction with the mission.

Later, when Skids was transporting the human Donny Finkleberg home, Silverbolt and the Aerialbots were sent to do battle with the Stunticons. Both combiners fused, creating Menasor and Superion. Josie Beller, known as Circut Breaker, fired upon Superion, however, crippling him heavily and leaving Menasor the victor.

Kibble is a feature of many Transformers, both in their toys and in their animation/comic designs. In its modern usage (see below for earlier meanings) it refers to pieces which have no clear purpose in one mode but are there only because they are part of another mode. In most cases, "kibble" is used to refer pieces of the character's altmode which "hang" or stick out in their robot mode. Sometimes these pieces are there as a matter of aesthetics, and sometimes it's simply because there wasn't any place better to put the stuff.

Much less frequently, the word is used to refer to "robot parts" which are badly hidden in an altmode; This is most common in figures with aircraft altmodes, where whole limbs or compressed torsos were left exposed on the underside. In this case, the term undercarriage junk is more often used. During the Beast Wars era, the term was also applied to any figure with robot mode limbs hanging from underneath the animal-mode shell.

Parts of one mode which are merely visible in other modes are not necessarily kibble. For example, an altmode part which is well-integrated into the robot's form -- like the front of a car or truck that becomes a character's chest -- is not kibble because it is an integral part of the robot's body, rather than being "tacked on".

When "kibble" entered the Transfan lexicon, it had a different meaning, and referred to a Transformers' accessories and detachable parts which had nowhere to go when not attached/worn/held. This meaning has almost, if not completely, disappeared from use.

Examples of kibble
Although it was most prominent during the Beast Era and Robots in Disguise, kibble has been a part of Transformers from the very beginning. G1 Prowl, for example, has car doors that stick out behind his shoulders. The doors have no purpose in robot mode. They are not part of his actual body; they are just there, serving as decoration, but otherwise pointless. Those doors are kibble. In the robot modes of the G1 Seeker toys, the jet's nosecone and tailfins are also kibble. The jet wings, despite being one of the Seekers' most prominent features, are kibble as well because they are not needed for the robot mode. In the old sense of the word, their fists can also be considered kibble since they are removed for jet mode yet do not store anywhere in said mode.

One of the most infamous examples of beast kibble on a robot mode is Big Convoy from Beast Wars Neo. Many of the Neo toys are kibble heavy, with "panels" of beast skin attached to the robot body by swiveling rods. This is also common in the Car Robots/Robots in Disguise line, most notably with the Car Brothers (Prowl, Side Burn, and X-Brawn). (See shellformer.)

Connotation
Kibble is usually only brought up when it is being used derisively. Indeed, kibble often has a negative impact on a toy. It can restrict movement by getting in the way, it can make a toy unbalanced if it is too concentrated in one part of the body such as a "backpack", and it can simply make the robot look like a purely humanoid robot that has car or animal parts stuck to it, rather than being a robot composed of car or animal parts.

However, kibble serves an important purpose in Transformer design, often giving characters distinctive or interesting silhouettes. As mentioned above, the airplane wings on the Seekers' backs, as well as the doors on Prowl, are one of their most memorable features. They look "cool" even if they are not integrated into the robot body. Thus, kibble is not an intrinsically bad thing. Most Transformers have it, and it may even be seen as an integral part of some characters' designs.

Other meanings / development of term
The word "kibble" was first applied to Transformers in February of 1996, when Lizard coined the term "combiner kibble" in a post to the newsgroup alt.toys.transformers. At that time, and for the next two years, the word kibble was used mainly to refer to detachable parts or accessories. It seems to have acquired its modern meaning sometime in 1998. A more detailed discussion follows:

In Google's archive of ATT, there are no recorded uses of the word "kibble" until the year 1996. In that year it was used only in reference to detachable parts and/or accessories, usually (but not always) in reference to pieces needed for combiners to combine properly, such as Scramble City feet, heads and fists. The very first instance of the word comes from a post by Lizard which is missing from the archive, but appears quoted in other posts:

<blockquote>Now, if only there was a convenient place to store "Combiner Kibble" -- all the hands, feet, chestplates, etc, that go into making a combiner... (Quoted text in &lt;3122E99A.19BB@texas.net&gt;, Feb 1996)</blockquote>

Said Lizard when reflecting on this ten years later, "The word comes from, of course, pet food -- I guess I felt the plethora of small pieces of Transformers detritus strongly resembled the little bits of cat food batted all over the kitchen." Lizard also used the word to refer to G1 Megatron's accessories in his 1996 report. Three others fans refered to "combiner kibble" in the first half of 1996 after Lizard's use of the term, all of them either placing it in quotes or adding an emoticon, which emphasizes the newness of the term. Later in the year the word shows up about a dozen more times, always in reference to combiner pieces or other detachable parts.

The first archived use of the word kibble to refer to something other than detachable parts is a January 1997 review of Claw Jaw, by Dave Richter. "In beast mode, he looks great from head on, but the abdomen (made out of robot legs and jointed squid kibble) doesn't look too solid if viewed from the side." (&lt;32F023AC.397A@virginia.edu&gt;, 29 Jan 1997) In March, Dave made a more explicitly-modern use of the word in response to another fan. This post serves reasonably well as a definition:

<blockquote><i>IMO, toys should look cool from any angle. You should be able to turn a BW or any figure around have it look as cool as it does in the front. The rear should not be a place for a toy designer to throw any excess pieces on the figure that are not needed in robot mode. There are much more better designs than that.</i><br><br>
I don't know, you've got to put the animal kibble somewhere. This is standard TF fare; look at all the T-rex bitz Grimlock has hanging off his back. BW has alot of junk hanging off the back of many of it's entries, but it doesn't overbalance them, so what does it matter? (&lt;33237FCB.656E@virginia.edu&gt;, 9 Mar 1997)
</blockquote>

Still, through 1997 the "detachable parts" sense was more heavily used, with 6 uses to the modern meaning's 3. In the previous year, 1996, the word was used to refer to detachable parts 16 times. In 1998 Dave Van Domelen began to use the word regularly in his posted toy reviews. He used it in both senses, but more often in the modern one. Overall, the word appeared in ATT 21 distinct times in 1998, with 13 of those being the new/current meaning. In 1999, usage exploded, with virtually all instances of the word being in its modern usage. The original "detachable parts" meaning has essentially become archaic and all-but-unknown, most likely due to the toyline itself largely abandoning that form of construction (indeed, it is rare for modern Transformers toys to not integrate or at least store all of its parts in all modes). By Novermber 1999, the meaning was well-enough entrenched in ATT that Straight-Edge gave this definition, from which the meaning has not drifted at all in the years since:

<blockquote>It means pieces of the alternate mode (Beast mode, vehicle mode) being not only visible, but actually hanging off the robot body. IE the Doors hanging off of Prowl's shoulders, and the Crab Legs/Claws on Rampage's robot mode. They are not part of an anthropomorphic robot, hence they are kibble. (&lt;19991109002603.08548.00002231@ng-fg1.aol.com&gt;, 9 Nov 1999)</blockquote>

It can't be determined from the limited breadth of the Usenet archive how the word kibble shifted its meaning, but it seems reasonable to guess that the earliest uses in the modern sense were simply an extension of the idea of "parts that stick on". Kibble, as we discuss it today, is just that -- parts that are "stuck on".
Guard City is a high-ranking Autobot warrior, who commands the Micromaster Six-Teams in their defense of Earth. His arch-nemesis is the Decepticon combiner Battle Gaia.

Guard City is comprised of the following individual Autobots:

*Fire Chief
*Streetstar
*Fly-Up
*Sparkride

As a combiner, Guard City was a master of Scramble Power. He could rearrange the Autobots he was comprised of into various formations which allowed him different special abilities.

Mach Formation: With Streetstar and Sparkride forming his legs, Guard City can reach incredible speeds.

Attack Formation: With Sparkride and Fly-up forming his arms, Guard City can use their various abilities (such as Fly-up's rotor blades) to aid him in battle.

Signal Formation: With Safety and Streetstar forming his arms, he can use the lightbars of both vehicles to make himself highly visable and demand attention during emergency situations.

Repair Formation: With Safety forming one of his arms, Guard City can call-upon the medic's skills to repair wounded soldiers.
: Guard City is a redeco of the original Defensor, a combination of five emergency-response vehicles. He is largely similar to Defensor, with only a handful of plastic colors changed, plus some but not all of the decals are changed. Since he uses the Scamble City style of combination, he can be composed of any combination of limb-robots, so long as Fire Chief is the torso. He was only available as a complete box set.
Trivia
* As part of the very last Transformers series in Japan for several years, Guard City is remarkably hard to find on the secondary market, and demands some heavy prices, despite the similarities to the original.
"Grimlock hate Optimus Prime. Grimlock believe leader should show strength by attacking quickly and mercilessly! Prime often reconsider or hesitate, in fear of possible casualties, both Transformer and squishy -- Grimlock say that cowardice! If Grimlock were in charge, war would have been over long ago."

Some Autobots wonder why Grimlock is even on their side. His disposition is much more suited towards the Decepticons. After all, he values power and strength over wisdom and compassion, and furthermore, he doesn't get along with any of the Autobots. It's been hypothesized that Grimlock just hates Megatron more than he hates Optimus. (Which means he must hate him A LOT.)

Grimlock is the leader of the Dinobots, a small but very close team of misfits. It's been said that anyone who enters a battle with the Dinobots usually leaves it feet-first.

(Grimlock's intelligence-level differed greatly between the comic and cartoon, leading to vastly different portrayals. See the entries below for details.)
Marvel Comics continuity
While the Autobots remained dormant inside Mount St. Hilary, the Ark detected Cybertronian life. Dispatching a probe, the Ark learned that Shockwave had come to Earth and was wandering the Savage Land. The Ark used data gathered from the Savage Land to convert five of the dormant Autobots into the Dinobots. They traveled to fight Shockwave, but all combatants became trapped in a tar pit. The Last Stand

Grimlock was a powerful and arrogant warrior who believed he knew best. He ascended to the post of overall Autobot leader on several occasions, growing in the process and eventually, despite their original conflict, becoming Optimus's hand-picked lieutenant and likely successor. Early on, Blaster was a major thorn in his side, deserting his command. Later, he tended to fight with the straight-laced, logical Prowl.

(Note: Comic Grimlock and the other Dinobots were much more intelligent than their Cartoon counterparts. They weren't Perceptor, mind you, but they had average, functional intellects. When he first appeared in the comic Grimlock spoke normally, but later the Comic adopted the caveman-esque speech of the cartoon, though only for Grimlock himself. The other Dinobots continued to speak normally. This vocal tic was alternately portrayed as a malfunction or an intentional choice by Grimlock, but in either case, he retained his full intelligence.)
Animated continuity
:Voice Actor: Greg Berger (US), Takurō Kitagawa (Japan)

(Note: In the animated series, Grimlock was more dimwitted than in most other continuities. As the series progressed, he was portrayed increasingly as a comic relief character.)

Cartoon Grimlock, like all the cartoon Dinobots, has a stereotypical "caveman" type personality and intellect level. They originally decide to help the Autobots, for instance, because "them have face like this on chest..." Pre-movie this lack of intelligence is usually coupled together with their great power to make them dangerous wild cards; Post-movie, however, Grimlock and the Dinobots are generally played as just plain dumb for comic relief.

When mysterious tremors shook the Autobot base, Wheeljack's investigation revealed strange objects behind a rock wall. After removing the wall, the Autobots found a cave full of dinosaur bones. The Autobots decided the idea of dinosaurs was interesting and researched the prehistoric beasts. Wheeljack and Ratchet asked Optimus Prime if they could build robot dinosaurs, and Prime agreed this was a good idea. Grimlock, Slag, and Sludge were built and unveiled to the Autobots, but the Dinobots were dimwitted and violent, and they attacked their makers. Grimlock blasted Teletraan I with his fire-breath, damaging it. Optimus Prime decreed that the Dinobots must be destroyed. However, Wheeljack convinced him instead to lock them away, and the trio were herded back into the cave and buried alive.

Later, the Decepticons took over a hydroelectric plant, but when the Autobots arrived to stop them, the Autobots were defeated and captured. Wheeljack, Ratchet, and Bumblebee, left behind at Autobot base to finish repairing Teletraan-I, decided to go against Optimus' orders and release the Dinobots, but not before upgrading their brains to be smarter and more obedient. After the Dinobots are reactivated, Wheeljack asks them to save their friends. Grimlock says he will obey... this time. They successfully attack the Decepticons and free the imprisoned Autobots. Optimus forgives Wheeljack, Ratchet, and Bumblebee for disobeying his orders and welcomes the victorious Dinobots back to the Autobots.

After a meteor surging with unknown energies struck the Earth, Optimus ordered the three Dinobots to guard it. He was so pleased with the Dinobots he asked Ratchet and Wheeljack to build two more. Meanwhile, Megatron was frustrated at the Dinobots' success, and sent Soundwave to probe them for potential weaknesses. Reading the Dinobots' minds, he discovered that Grimlock was arrogant and believed he would make a better leader than the weak Optimus Prime. Megatron decided to use this to his advantage, and approached them himself. He played to Grimlock's jealousy and agreed with him that the strongest should be leader. The Dinobots declared Optimus Prime their enemy.

Realizing the meteorite was due to explode, Optimus left to warn the Dinobots, but they attacked him. Instead of destroying him completely, however, Grimlock carried him to the Decepticons, who had stolen the meteorite during the battle. Megatron was angry that Optimus Prime was not destroyed, and Starscream suggested that despite Grimlock's arrogance, inside he was still compassionate. This enraged Grimlock. They were interrupted by the two new Dinobots, Snarl and Swoop, whom Megatron ordered the original three Dinobots to attack. At the climax of the battle, the meteorite exploded, but Optimus Prime pushed Grimlock out of the way, saving him. Grimlock realized the error of his ways and the Dinobots forced the Decepticons into retreat. Grimlock apologized for his jealousy.

The Decepticons joined forces with Sub-Atlantica and staged a full-scale attack on Washington, D.C.. The Autobots were overwhelmed, forcing Wheeljack to call for the Dinobots' assistance. Grimlock expressed his frustration at being called whenever the Autobots were in over their heads. With their help, the Autobots were able to overturn the Decepticons' advance and plunge the city of Sub-Atlantica, burning, into the sea. This pattern of the Autobots' dependence on the Dinobots repeated when the artificial intelligence TORQ III turned machines against mankind. With every piece of help he and his troops gave, Grimlock was never slow to add a scathing remark about the inabilities of the Autobots. That said, he was not unwilling to admit the failings of his own troops, either, and willingly took them to the time-displaced "Dinobot Island," where they trained in the wilderness and helped stop a Decepticon raid on the prehistoric paradise.

The final straw for Grimlock came when he and the Dinobots were injured in a Decepticon trap at an airfield. Enraged, Grimlock refused to take orders from Optimus Prime any more, and led the Dinobots away from the Ark. When the Autobots began to suffer from Cybertonium deficiency, Spike Witwicky and his girlfriend Carly attempted to persuade the Dinobots - who continued to function perfectly, as they had been built on Earth without Cybertonium - to steal some of the mineral from a Decepticon shipment coming in from Cybertron. Grimlock instead opted to lead the Dinobots to Cybertron itself, where they were captured by Shockwave and put to work in the Cybertonium mines, until Spike and Carly rescued them. Brought back to Earth, the Dinobots agreed to follow Prime's order again - until such time as Grimlock didn't feel like it.

By the Earth year 2005, it seemed apparent that Grimlock had undergone some degree of a personality change, becoming more childish and petulant, rather than brutish and stubborn. Throughout 2006, he regularly participated in missions with his fellow Autobots rather than the other Dinobots, battling on the planets of Chaar, Goo, Dredd and Eurythma. He and Daniel Witwicky were transported to the sorcerous other-dimensional realm of Menonia, where Grimlock was duped into fighting on the side of the tyrannical Quintesson, the Red Wizard, and later, he helped to sniff out the "dinosaur transform static" that implicated Trypticon in the theft of world monuments. Later in the year, when Decepticon leader Galvatron had Cybertron infused with function-inverting anti-electrons, a dose of the particles gave Grimlock super-intelligence. During a mission to Unicron's disembodied head, where the Autobots were outmatched by the new Decepticon Terrorcons, Grimlock used components of Unicron's head to construct the Technobots to battle them. Combined as Computron, the Technobots felt they could not match the Terrorcons, until Grimlock transferred his super-intelligence into Computron, reverting to his old self and allowing the Technobots to claim victory.

Grimlock's greatest victory came when he and a large number of other Transformers with animal transformations were summoned to a world at the centre of the galaxy by the ex-assistant of the ancient genius, Primacron, creator of Unicron. The assistant had assembled these "Primitive" Transformers in the hope that their simple instincts could defeat Primacron's newest creation, Tornedron, but one by one they fell to him, with Grimlock apparently crushed under Trypticon. Grimlock survived, however, and followed Tornedron back to Primacron's lab. When Tornedron turned on his master, like his predecessor, Primacron's complicated plans and equations could not find a way to stop him; Grimlock, on the other hand, randomly flicked a switch which reversed Tornedron's energy polarity, undoing the damage he and done and dissipating. Dancing around over his successful saving of the universe, Grimlock decimated Primacron's lab, dubbing it the smartest thing he'd ever done

The Headmasters
In the year 2011, the Decepticons invaded Cybertron in full force. Grimlock was deployed by Wreck-Gar to fend off the invaders. He was seen fighting alongside his fellow Dinobots as well as the Throttlebots against the invading Decepticons, however, they didn't fair too well against the Decepticon Headmasters, as they are all quickly put to sleep by Mindwipe's hypnosis attack.

Transformers PD-Type
Star Saber recruited Grimlock as backup for a duel with Deathsaurus. Grimlock became bored watching the two of them fight in the sky, but when Star Saber finally succeeded in knocking Deathsaurus to the ground, Grimlock ate his head while Star Saber looked on, pleased at the outcome of his clever plan.<ref>From the TF-PD type comic [http://www.tfarchive.com/comics/japanese/superdeformed.php?dgallery_show=deformed/SDComicTrans06.jpg Me Strongest! When Razorbeast and Optimus Minor where attempting to "rescue" Megatron from Magmatron, Grimlock showed up and acted as the perfect distraction. Grimlock and Magmatron battled. Magmatron narrowly arose as the victor by use of his triple beast modes. Grimlock was knocked out, but later helped to construct the Maximal's new base. The Gathering, Part 4

IDW comics continuity
Grimlock, and the rest of the Dynobots were a close-knit group of hunters, suffering from neither low intelligence nor Grimlock's traditional speech impairment.

After Shockwave destroyed a caché of Energon the Dynobots had been hoarding, causing them severe Energon burns and causing them to feel humiliated, they swore revenge. And so, against orders from Optimus Prime, they followed Shockwave when he left Cybertron to stabilize "Ultra-Energon" deposits he had sent to other worlds as a precaution against the depletion of Cybertron's own Energon reserves.

When Shockwave reached his first destination - Earth, at the end of the last Ice Age - the Dynobots destroyed his ship and took on dinosaur alternate modes with synthetic flesh coatings to protect against the high levels of Energon radiation (see also Beast Wars), Grimlock having rejected the suggestion of a mammoth alternate mode as not at all palatable (but got plenty excited at the notion of a Tyrannosaurus mode).

On transporting down to the planet's surface to confront Shockwave, they gained an initial advantage, as Shockwave's logic was unable to comprehend the effort and risks they had taken for their revenge. However, when Shockwave recognized this weakness shut down his logic processors and operated a "rage" program to enable him to operate on pure instinct, he shrugged off their attacks and beat them severely, ending by burning off their organic coatings. Unable to accept another defeat, Grimlock transformed to robot mode and fought against his immenent stasis lock to no avail.

However, before leaving the Dynobots' ship, he had enabled a "dead man's switch", designed to take Shockwave with them if they were defeated. On entering stasis lock, this failsafe activated, firing on a nearby dormant volcano, causing an eruption which buried Shockwave and the Dynobots under ash and lava.

However, in 2006, Shockwave was discovered by a team of human archelogists. Whether he, Grimlock or the rest of the Dynobots can/will be reactivated remains to be seen.
: Grimlock's toy was originally part of Takara's Diaclone Dinosaur Robo series. When Hasbro imported the toy in 1985 for the Transformers line, the blue crotch was changed to red and the Diaclone driver mini-figure was dropped.

:The original Grimlock changes from a robot into a robotic T-Rex and comes with a red sword, a black double-barreled rifle, and a rocket launcher with three silver rockets.

:Grimlock was later reissued in the European/Australian-exclusive Classics series (not to be confused with the 2006 Classics line).

: Released in 1989, this simplified and slightly-modified version of Grimlock transforms into a robotic T-Rex whose tail becomes a handgun. He came with a large human Pretender shell with a rather knight-like armor theme, with a helmet and large cannon.

: His human shell looks a lot like Ed Asner. (Actually it also rather strongly resembles his voice actor from the cartoon Greg Berger.)

: A K-Mart exclusive in its Hasbro release, this version of Grimlock is simply the inner robot of his Classic Pretender form without the shell or its accessories, leaving him only his tail/gun. In Japan, he was only available in a boxed "Hero Set" with the other three Legends toys, but with a silver face rather than the Hasbro version's orange.
* Grimlock (Action Master, 1990)
: Part of the initial assortment of non-transforming Action Master figures, Grimlock's design combines his cartoon model with extra toy-based detailing. He came with the Anti-Tank Cannon "partner" machine which Grimlock could ride, or be unfolded to form a really big "long range mortar launcher."

: Grimlock's original toy was redecoed for release in Generation 2, this time lacking the missile launcher accessory. He was available in three different colors; the first --and rarest-- in his original silver (the easiest way to spot if this is a G2 or original is by the "Autobot" tampograph on his leg), then in a medium turquoise-blue, and finally (and most commonly) in a dark blue.
: Beast Wars Grimlock is a redeco of Dinobot in gray and gold with black spots, transforming into a "raptor" of some variety. His tail becomes a sword and a rotate-blade. He was slightly retooled to have space for an "energon chip" rubsign.

: This mold is also used by Dinobots Grimlock, and was retooled to make Dinotron, Hardhead and Thrustor.

Beast Machines
:T-Wrecks may have been intended to be a new form for Grimlock, based on the references in his tech spec bio to his Beast Wars "Attack Specialist" function and other hints. However, T-Wrecks' appearances in the Universe: The Wreckers comics suggests he is a new, unrelated character.
Alternators
: Alternators Grimlock transforms into a silver 1:24 Ford Mustang with opening doors, hood, and trunk. His engine transforms into a double-barreled gun, and he also carries an orange sword which can attach to the underside of his vehicle mode. The toy is one of the most-complained-about Alternators toys, due to its notoriously finicky transformation (with many small steps that must be performed in exactly the right order) and to several pieces which have a tendency to pop off with relatively small amounts of force.

:This mold was remolded into Alternators Wheeljack.

Universe
:The Grimlock toy released in Energon was originally created by Hasbro for release as a special new-mold addition for the Universe toyline and was intended to represent Generation 1 Grimlock. However, it wasn't and it didn't.

: Classics Grimlock, a gray and gold Tyrannosaurus rex, is a reimagined form of his original toy. His dinosaur mode's sculpt is based heavily upon TakaraTomy's Zoids Genosaurer toy, and features articulated jaws, some neck and arm movement, posable legs and a segmented, articulated tail.

:In robot mode, his tail detaches to become a sword/whip. His bayonet blaster can be deployed in either mode, and fires a clear red projectile. Both weapons can be stored on his back when not used.

:As with most Classics toys, Grimlock features a heat-sensitive rubsign, placed on the left side of the tyrannosaurus torso/his left leg.
Synopsis
A group of four small children are playing in a railyard, but they're play is interrupted when one of them sees a police car: the Protectobot Streetwise. The Protectobots are transporting Blaster to the Ark to be tried and executed for treason. The grim task is likewise interrupted when Blades discovers that the Combaticons are nearby. Groove transports Blaster to a safe hiding place while the other Protectobots investigate.

While the Protectobots and Combaticons battle, one of the children discovers Blaster. As the nearby battle threatens the children, Blaster convinces one of them to remove a mode lock that prevents him from transforming out of his tape deck mode, so that he may be able to protect them.

When Bruticus stuns Defensor, Blaster steps in to confront Bruticus himself, telling the giant robot that he no longer has allegiance to the Protectobots, who are holding him prisoner. Bruticus forces Blaster to prove his loyalty by killing one of the human children. Blaster points him rifle, and pulls the trigger. The child immediately cries out in pain, and collapses.

As Bruticus examines the child's fallen form, Blaster knocks him out with a massive electrical shock from a downed powerline. The child then gets up, having only played dead, knowing that Blaster would not really have hurt him, but understanding Blaster's need to convince Bruticus that Blaster had no loyalty to the humans.

Hot Spot chooses not to arrest Blaster, realizing that to do so would be to go against his own principles. The mode lock is instead attached to the Combaticon Blast Off, enabling Blaster to treat the children to a ride in space. No sooner do they achieve orbit than Blaster and the children find themselves fired upon. The Ark is spaceworthy once again, and Grimlock is using to make sure Blaster is brought to justice!
Synopsis
Megatron, not yet having rejoined his fellow Decepticons, is rendered immobile when he runs out of fuel. Meanwhile, III scrambles with a way to explain the presence of giant robots to the public that will calm panic. Despite the efforts of G.B. Blackrock to convince III that the Autobots can be Earth's allies, III decides to go with a cover story, inspired by the Robot Master comic book, that all Transformers are controlled by a terrorist supervillain with an army of robots under his control. The first broadcast to the public of "Robot Master's" exploits takes advantage of the inert Megatron, whose presence bolsters the government's claims. This broadcast gains the attention of both the Autobots and the Decepticon Soundwave, who undertakes to free Megatron. The Autobots, knowing the presence of Megatron to be a threat, attempt to collect him, but are met with resistance not only from Soundwave, but from the human military, which does not recognize the Autobots anything other than a threat. Soundwave frees Megatron and the Autobots are forced to retreat. Although Megatron wishes to kill Finkleberg for claiming to control him, Finkleberg is able to appeal to the Decepticons that, by continuing to convince the humans that the Autobots are as much a threat to them as the Decepticons, the Autobots efforts might continue to be thwarted. Finkleberg is spared, for now....
Synopsis
G.B. Blackrock plans to unveil a new weapon designed to destroy the Transformers, and visits Josie Beller in her hospital room to update her on the situation. She, in turn, shows Blackrock some technology she's been working on from her hospital bed, causing Blackrock to worry that she may put herself in another dangerous situation in her desire for revenge against the robots who crippled her. These fears are proven warranted when Josie escapes from her hospital room, and shows up in Blackrock's office as Circuit Breaker, wearing a metal suit designed to compensate for her damaged nervous system and granting her offensive capability against any mechanical form. The Autobots, revived from their imprisonment aboard the Ark, seek a new solution to their fuel shortage, and Jazz strikes a deal with G.B. Blackrock to provide him with protection from the Decepticons in exchange for fuel. The unveiling of Blackrock's secret weapon is sabotaged by Circuit Breaker in an effort to get him to announce her as his intended weapon. When the Decepticons attack, the situation is made even worse when Autobots Jazz and Wheeljack appear to make good on their promise to provide Blackrock with protection. Circuit Breaker, unable to discern between Autobot and Decepticon, severely injures Wheeljack as the Decepticons escape. Although Circuit Breaker spares Jazz at Blackrock's pleading, she severs her ties with him.
Synopsis
Ratchet journeys to the Savage Land to locate the Dinobots, who fought Shockwave there shortly after the Ark crash-landed on Earth 4 million years ago. Meanwhile, Shockwave checks in on Megatron, who has been left to guard the Ark alone and prepare the head of Optimus Prime for transport to the aerospace plant recently captured by the Decepticons. Shockwave returns to the plant with Optimus Prime's head to begin the construction of a new generation of Decepticons. After Ratchet revives the Dinobots, he arranges for Megatron to meet him on a nearby mountain, where Megatron is attacked by the Dinobots after threatening to kill Ratchet. Megatron is knocked off of a cliff, and transforms into his gun mode in a desperate effort to survive. With Megatron thus defeated, Ratchet and the Dinobots are able to retake the abandoned Ark. Meanwhile, Josie Beller is about the check out of her hospital room....
Errors
*Megatron still has his off-center insignia, which is so consistent it has to be intentional, but I can't figure out why.
*If Optimus Prime transferred the Creation Matrix to Buster in "The Worse of Two Evils," why is Shockwave able to begin the new lives (eventually to become the Constructicons) in this issue on page 13? Indeed, this is the first verifiable evidence we have that Shockwave has proven that Prime has (had) the Creation Matrix, as opposed to just suspects that he has it.

Items of note
*Although this is advertised as the introduction of the Dinobots, they had actually been introduced in issue #4. This issue features their recovery from the Savage Land in the present day.
