When the Autobots came into possession of a large amount of energon, Starscream tasked the Combaticons with diverting the transport by destroying a bridge. Vortex and Blast Off were sent to clear a short cut to allow Brawl to take a drop ship through. Blast Off went through first, drawing out Autobot mines for Vortex to destroy. Once they got through the ruins, the Autobots closed some huge shutters, so Blast Off went ahead, leaving Vortex behind to fight all the Autobots by himself. Vortex eventually reached the bridge and helped out Brawl when it turned out the shielding on the bridge supports was too much for his artillery mode to handle. After the pair took out the side supports, Brawl blasted a hole in the center support so Vortex could head in and destroy it with a detpak. Once Swindle brought the transport to a halt, the Combaticons combined into Bruticus and smashed through the rest of its defenses. Unfortunately the damage they did resulted in the transport crashing. Starscream was not very pleased at all and had them all arrested.

Vortex and the other Combaticons were later freed once Megatron was resurrected and retook his leadership. They were aboard the Nemesis as it pursued the Ark and Vortex took part in the assault on the Autobot ship's engines as part of Bruticus. * Vortex's body parts are available to Scientist-class characters in Fall of Cybertron multiplayer, identified as Vanguard-type components. Because of his unique vehicle mode, there are no Vanguard-type wings. However, wings from other characters can be used by equipping the desired wings on one chest, then switching over to the Vanguard chest. They are only visible on the tail of the helicopter, however.
* Although Vortex's alt-mode normally appears as a helicopter (fitting the trend of other Vortexes in the multiverse), he reconfigures himself into a jet-like form when his boost is used. Unfortunately it appears that the toy is not capable of replicating this "boost mode".
The Path Blaster is a semi-automatic weapon that fires dense packets of molten metal with a good deal of accuracy. There are a number of common modifications to the basic model, perhaps none so remarkable as the so-called "Gambler" upgrade, which inserts an explosive synthetic Destronium round randomly into every magazine.
An introduction to Grimlock's way of doing things.

Synopsis
At the defensive perimeter around Autobot City, several Guardians attack alongside Decepticon Seekers and Wall Crawlers, trying to hold the line without wasting the dwindling Autobot energon reserves. Suddenly, however, the Lightning Strike Coalition joins the battle, and proceeds to carve its way through the enemy forces with no concern for energy conservation. Its leader, Grimlock wants answers: why do the Decepticons fight as if energon supply is no concern, and what happened to the soldier he sent to investigate that question?

At High Command in Iacon, the Coalition's offensive draws the attention of Optimus Prime, Perceptor and Jazz, and the Autobot leader demands that they fall back and stop wasting energon. Although Grimlock initially refuses, he is persuaded to follow orders by his teammates, and they break off their assault.

Later, back at Iacon, Optimus admonishes Grimlock for his actions, but the warrior retorts that the Autobot leader's strategy consists of sitting and waiting for the Decepticons to win. The Coalition leader hands Prime the recordings from their earlier battle, and then storms off into the base. Whilst Optimus and Jazz lament the Autobots' situation, and restate that the Ark is their best hope, Perceptor goes to Grimlock with an incoming transmission, for his eyes only. The broadcast is from Swoop, who has found where the Decepticons are getting energon, but is cut off before he can elaborate. Angered, Grimlock immediately declares that the Lightning Strike Coalition is setting out to find its missing member.

* Grimlock's security code designation is "LSC85", a reference to the Lightning Strike Coalition and the year the Dinobots debuted.

Errors
* The Lightning Strike Coalition appear in bodies nearly identical to their Dinobot forms (though featuring more vehicular parts), despite this story taking place directly before the events of the game (in which Sludge is seen to have a very different, pre-dinosaur mode).
