Ravage's body and armament are all dedicated to hitting the enemy before they even know what hit them. He can be orbitally inserted at fifteen times the speed of sound, spy inside highly secure locations using swarms of marble bots, and generally ruin your day.

Prime is a rank of highest distinction in many Transformers continuities. Typically, it is used as the identification for the leader of the Autobots, something that is bestowed only on those that carry the Matrix of Leadership within them. It is retroactively derived from Primus, the creator of the Transformers.

With the retcon that Primus is one singular entity that exists (and must exist) threaded through all Transformer continuities, the term Prime is likewise given one singular origin. It was, first of all, the designation granted by Primus to the Thirteen original Transformers created, by his own hand, at the dawn of the physical universe to crew his planetary form.

:Japanese equivalent: Convoy

Fiction
Marvel Comic continuity
The idea of Prime being a title/rank has its first, fullest expression here. A direct lineage of Creation Matrix bearers is established, each taking on a derivation of the name of their god Primus. They are Prima, Prime Nova, Sentinel Prime, Optimus Prime, and Rodimus Prime.

Cartoon continuity
The evidence for "Prime" being a rank here is weaker than elsewhere but the case can still be made. Though many Matrix-Bearers are seen, and all are by definition Autobot Leaders, only four are ever named; 2 Primes, 2 not: Alpha Trion, Optimus Prime, Ultra Magnus, and Rodimus Prime. Without knowing any other names it is hard to make a concrete case here for "Prime" being a title given only to Matrix-Bearers.

It is of note though that if it were, then "Prime" in this continuity would be a military/political title (since it is the Matrix of Leadership), rather than the religious title of the Marvel Comics.

Note: Not all Convoys are Primes. If you can lead Ant-droids to a picnic, you're a Convoy in Japan.

Beast Wars continuity
It's only passingly touched on, but may be noteworthy that the phrase, "Who died and made him Prime?" was used by Maximal characters in Beast Wars, implying that, to them, "prime" was roughly equivalent to "leader". They also used the word to mean "great" or "good" in the phrases "That's just prime," (said sarcastically), and "Feeling prime."

Dreamwave continuity
This continuity also establishes Prime as designating the leader of the Autobots, but there is some muddled information. The Prime carried within him the Matrix of Leadership, but it appears that the Matrix doesn't contain the wisdom of past leaders, as that was held on a separate datatrak. Also, the Prime did not appoint his successor. A new Prime was chosen by the Council of Ancients, supposedly through divine authority.

It's unknown what powers the Prime shared with the High Council and the Council of Ancients, but the Prime had several powers. In addition to being commander-in-chief of the Autobot Army, the Prime also had the authority to order a planet wide evacuation. Autobots gave oaths of loyalty to the Prime, and were expected to risk their lives for the Prime's safety (whether the Prime wanted them to or not). The War Within

There are five known Primes in Dreamwave continuity, listed in MTMTE #8. These are Alpha Prime, Guardian Prime, Sentinel Prime, Optimus Prime and Rodimus Prime. The list does not specify chronology, and Rodimus Prime never appeared in any actual Dreamwave comics.

Armada/Energon/Cybertron continuity
Prime is indeed a title given to leaders and matrix bearers here, as evidenced by both Vector Prime and Optimus Prime, but no other Primes are ever named.

IDW Comics continuity
Optimus Prime describes Primes as beings that define the eras they ruled. Thus, Nova Prime presided over an era in which the populace believed the Cybertronian race's destiny was in the stars, and commissioned the first Ark spacecraft. Spotlight: Optimus Prime Although certainly a matrix-bearer, as confirmed by Optimus and Galvatron, Nova Prime disappeared into the Benzuli Expanse while aboard the Ark, with the Matrix guiding him into the Dead Universe. Spotlight: Galvatron

Before the Great War, Sentinel Prime served as the head of the Autobot Security Services, the chief law enforcement and military body on Cybertron. However, he stresses that he is ultimately subservient to the will of the Senate who enact the laws he enforces. Megatron Origin issue 3

After Cybertron is rendered uninhabitable, Optimus Prime is the apparent highest ranking Autobot, directing the galaxy-spanning conflict to deny the Decepticons conquest of additional planets. In this task, he occasionally seeks the guidance of the ancient Autobot and weapon of last resort Omega Supreme.

There appear to be at least four Primes predating Optimus Prime. Spotlight: Optimus Prime

There seems to be an Autobot who held the rank of "Prime" between Sentinel and Optimus in the IDW continuity. During an early skirmish during the opening days of the Great War, a pre-Prime Optimus and Blurr discuss a plan to rescue the Autobot commander Zeta Prime. It can be assumed that this "new" Prime was "sworn in" following Sentinel Prime's death in Megatron: Origins (LBJ style), before ultimately dying himself, passing the "Prime" mantle onto Optimus. Spotlight: Blurr

Movie continuity
The rank was an ancient and forgotten one until Autobot archaeologists uncovered "Prime" was the meaning of the symbol on Optimus' head. The Autobots began referring to Optimus as Optimus Prime since they liked the sound of it. Defiance issue 3

The title of Prime was bestowed upon the civilian and spiritual leader of Cybertron but at the same time, aided the Lord High Protector in stewarding the All Spark just as the Lord High Protector was co-ruler. Optimus Prime held this title before, during and after the war for the All Spark as leader of the Autobots. Ghosts of Yesterday

According to The Quest For the ALLSPARK paperback's opening paragraph, "...Most revered were Optimus and Megatron. They were twin brothers of the Prime dynasty."
This, along with the note from the Autobots version of the same DS game that Megatron "took the spark" of his and Optimus' father, implies that “Prime” may have been their father’s name and that Megatron may have also had the surname "Prime" as well.

Transformers Animated
Prime is still a rank in this continuity, but surprisingly one far lower than commander of all the Autobots (Ultra Magnus - the "Magnus" refers to his rank). This is revealed when Sentinel Prime attempts to give an order to Optimus Prime. Optimus is able to disregard this order because regardless of Sentinel's standing on the Cybertronian Elite Guard, they are both still of equal rank, Primes. The Elite Guard Both Ultra Magnus and Sentinel Prime have bars on their forearms, with more bars present for the superior officer. Optimus Prime lacks these, and as such it is unknown if they are only present in the Elite Guard.

In addition to Optimus and Sentinel, there is also Rodimus Prime and Longarm Prime. Longarm is head of Cybertron Intelligence. Hilariously, since he's really someone else in disguise.

Fun Publications fan club comics
It is revealed that the first Thirteen original Transformers created by Primus to crew his planetary form were all designated Primes. In addition to this designation, each was given a specific task or role in creation.

Vector Prime was granted guardianship of space-time. The Prime who would become The Fallen was charged to oversee the force of entropy. Another of these Primes was made the guardian of Rarified Energon. Of the known members of The Thirteen only Prima's "function" is yet unknown.

There is some evidence that these Primes are multiversal singularities (like their creator, only one version of each existing across all realities).

Shattered Glass
The title of Prime is not an honorary rank but the title of the diabolical leader of the Autobots. Optimus Prime stands as the current Prime. For now. Rodimus may very well usurp the title and position in the future.
The Transformers did not go about speaking English or any other known Earth language long ages ago on their distant metal world. Though the records of such conversations are frequently translated for us, we should not forget that these conversations originally flowed in odd electronic syllables past strange metallic lips, or were etched by alien hands long eons before the first humans painted muddy shapes upon dark cave stone.

Rather unique to this universe, several Transformers (notably Optimus Prime and Megatron) have Cyberglyphics etched onto their heads, near the cheek area. What they say is anyone's guess. The All Spark was covered in Cyberglyphics, leading Sector Seven to conclude a connection between the All Spark and Megatron. Additionally, cometary forms are covered in Cybertronian "tribal markings".

The Decepticons communicate in Cybertronian (which to human ears sound like a collection of vowel-intensive electronic noises and rumbles... with the notable exception of Frenzy, who has a very staccato manner of speaking) when speaking among themselves on Earth, but have learned enough English to communicate with the humans when necessary. The crew members of the vessel Ghost 1 thought that one could make out words if they had a degree in theoretical physics...and were tripping on bad acid. Ghosts of Yesterday

Cybertronian languages appear to contain a lot of information in small fragments.

This is the first time that Transformers are seen speaking their own language.

The Battle for the Allspark v2 online game included a countdown in this language, revealing that it uses base-10 positional notation numbering system. This is notable because previous examples of Cybertronian language have used a system similar to Roman numerals.

There are also two versions of Cybertronian used in the Wars Mini-ARG (Alternate Reality Game.) These are recycled versions of Ancient Autobot from "Cosmic Rust" and Decepticon from "Decepticon Graffiti!". They retconed a canonical order to both languages, based on fonts created by Jim Sorenson in the late '90s. The Autobot Agoracer posted in Ancient Autobot, while the Decepticon Agoraptor posted in Decepticon. Both are available for download here under the names "Ancient Autobot" and "Decepticon Regular."
autobot

:Arcee is an Autobot from the 2007 movie franchise in the live-action film continuity family.

Though small compared to many of her peers and adversaries, Arcee compensates with speed and aggressive maneuvers, making her one of the most dangerous Autobots around. Moreover, Arcee is a born hunter. She honed her speed hunting turbofoxes with other speedsters, challenging herself to get as close as possible before tagging them with her bow. She's a crack shot with said crossbow weapon, and Ironhide has trained her to use her speed to her advantage in battle, striking suddenly and swiftly and then vanishing away again as fast as she appeared.

The events at Tyger Pax created a nagging doubt in Arcee about her abilities. She carries some guilt about Bumblebee's injuries, and part of what drives her is the desire to prove herself, not only in the optics of her friends and comrades, but most importantly in her own.

Fiction
IDW Transformers movie comics
Many, many years in the past, Arcee was a member of Optimus's science division, in charge of excavation site LT34 near the temple of Simfur. While Optimus was showing Lord High Protector Megatron around, her team discovered a mysterious relic with a strange symbol etched into it. She led her superiors to the ancient relic and watched as Megatron and Optimus began to argue when the former demanded the relic be relocated to his private quarters, Optimus relenting due to a sudden alien attack. Arcee assisted with its evacuation from the dig site. Defiance issue 1

charstubfiction
Defiance issue 2

During the war, Arcee was one of a handful of Autobots under the command of Bumblebee who desperately fought against Megatron's vast army at Tyger Pax. She was captured and interrogated by the Decepticons but survived the ordeal. She recounted to their Autobot rescuers Bumblebee's heroics in delaying Megatron, preventing Megatron from intercepting the wormhole-bound All Spark. Prime Directive (IDW) issue 1

Many years later, following the death of Megatron and the destruction of the All Spark on Earth, Arcee was in command of an Autobot assault team on Mars and led Cliffjumper and others in an attack on Starscream's ship. The Reign of Starscream Issue Number Two

While her team made short work of the Swindle, Dreadwing, and Payload drones the Decepticons sent against them, Arcee killed the Decepticon sniper Hardtop before he could snipe Smokescreen. Her teammates were unprepared for the arrival of Thundercracker, however, and he quickly slew Camshaft and wounded Cliffjumper. Remembering her failure at Tyger Pax, Arcee leapt into action, and soon she and Cliffjumper had Thundercracker at their mercy. The arrival of Starscream changed that, as he killed Smokescreen and Air Raid and badly damaged Cliffjumper. As she attempted to pull the last surviving member of her team to safety, Arcee was kicked aside by Starscream. The Reign of Starscream Issue Number Three

However, Arcee recovered an instant later. The Decepticon starship was already taking off, but she jumped and grabbed onto a piece of landing gear, holding on tight...through the space bridge. Wow. Later, she made her way back to an Autobot facility, where she unexpectedly met Clocker and Crosshairs. Along with a large force of Autobots, the three moved in on the Simfur temple, where Starscream was using captured Autobots for a strange project of his. The Reign of Starscream Issue Number Four

She split her troops into two forces: One would attack the city of Trypticon as a diversion, while the other moved in on Simfur. Arcee and her team could only watch helplessly as Starscream drained the life out of the Autobot prisoners strapped onto the replica All Spark, despite her friend Elita-One's pleas for mercy. An opportunity to cause havoc presented itself when Dreadwing's forces attempted a coup. Arcee lined up her sights on the generator holding the life energy of the deceased prisoners, dedicated the shot to Elita, and destroyed it, annihilating the Cube and sending the Decepticons into disarray. Arcee's team fought their way through the disorganised Decepticons, linked up with Wingblade's team, and rolled out just as the crippled 'starship came crashing down on the city. With the destruction of the capitol and the defeat of a significant portion of the Decepticon drone army, Arcee considered this to be the turning point of the war, but as long as Starscream was alive, he was a thread that she had to track down. The Reign of Starscream Issue Number Five

Target Robovision bio
Arcee was on Earth for a short time at the beginning of the conflict there, presumably arriving shortly after Bumblebee. When the situation on Earth began to ramp up into out-and-out combat, she was reassigned elsewhere, where her stealth skills would be of more use.

Now she fights in the Charii system against a Decepticon splinter cell working on a star-breaking weapon. If she has her way, the only things breaking will be their heads.

Originally, Arcee didn't serve either faction, working alone to solve injustices in her own way. Megatron personally decided to make an example of her, and only an Autobot extraction team led by Kup saved her life. This debt saw her join the Autobots. She's chimerical in nature and is constantly changing her alt-mode in an effort to go as fast as possible. She previously had a hover-car form, but on Earth takes a modified bike mode. Once you earn her trust, she's never going to let you down. Transformers Comic issue 21

Arcee was one of the six Autobot reinforcements hiding on the Moon. Transformers Comic issue 9 When Starscream attacked them, the quick-thinking Arcee was the one who took command and rallied the troops. When this still failed to work, she ordered them to Earth (following Strongarm's initiative) and their prearranged targets. Transformers Comic issue 11 Alongside Armorhide, she guarded Ratchet while he destroyed the captive All Spark and thus saved Earth from being cyberformed.
And, of course, they didn't lose. However, Arcee was left bewildered by the idea that Humanity would not trust and love the Autobots, and Optimus explained to her that, from a human point of view, all the Transformers are alien horrors fighting on their planet. Following this, she guarded the Savannah, Georgia shelter and was caught in Starscream's ambush. Transformers Comic issue 14 Transformers Comic issue 15
She was later part of Ironhide's team in retrieving Nucleon from Cybertron, which ran afoul of Stockade. Transformers Comic issue 17 She acted as Bumblebee's distraction, drawing Storm Surge and Fracture away, Transformers Comic issue 18 and doubled back to regroup with Ironhide (and pull him out of rubble) when Unicron arrived. Transformers Comic issue 19 Later, she got Optimus Prime up to speed on the situation. Transformers Comic issue 20

Following the Decepticon re-conquest of Savannah, Arcee was part of the raid to rescue Mikaela Banes. Instead, her Energon Bow mounts on a peg on either arm, with her hands being positioned to give the appearance of her using the bow. **Japanese ID number: MA-11
**Accessories: Launcher, missile

: Deluxe Arcee transforms into a purple 2006 Buell Firebolt XB12R motorcycle, genericised to get around licensing issues. Arcee has references tampographed on her vehicle mode, such as her motorcycle's model name, "RC 1100", and her Massachusetts license plate marked TF7407, the original release date of the movie.
: Arcee's Automorphing feature is located in her crossbow weapon (formed out of the seat/storage area of the bike), activated when the projectile (the bike's tailpipe) is inserted, which pushes out the recurved lath parts on the sides of the weapon. The rectangular peg which is supposed to be used to attach her weapon to her forearm in robot mode is sometimes a poor fit, and the weapon may pop off. As an alternative, the round peg by which the weapon is attached in vehicle mode can also be used in robot mode, with a little rearranging of parts.
: Undocumented in the instructions, the two shoulder-mounted half-wheels contain a small niche on the edge of the tires. By folding the wheels down with the hubcaps pointing towards the chest and turning the tires towards the shoulders, one can feel the wheels gently click into place via the tire niches and hidden tabs in the shoulders, allowing the wheels to remain in place and more closely resemble the figure as pictured on its packaging.
: As with most larger Transformers toys that become motorcycles, Arcee has a kickstand on the left side of the bike; unfortunately, it's mounted so low that she will fall in the opposite direction if it is fully extended.

: A three-pack, exclusive to Sam's Club stores, consisting of redecos of Voyager Class Optimus Prime and Deluxe Class Arcee, both with battle damage deco, and an unchanged Voyager Class Starscream.

: This version of Arcee later was sold at Asia online retailers and in European retail stores in the same packaging as the first release of Arcee. The packaging did not indicate any of the changes made to the figure, apart from a sticker on the bubble exclaiming "Exclusive! Battle-damage!".
Trivia
* As part of 2007's Hasbro tour, fans viewed "Robot Scale Chart v03", dated 11.22.05, which showed Arcee's height as 9' (2.7m). However, all of the designs on this chart were very early and later heavily revised (though Jazz was revised far less than the others).

* Arcee was originally going to be a member of the live-action movie's Autobot cast, but was later replaced by Ironhide. According to screenwriter Roberto Orci, they would have needed to explain the point behind female robots, which there wasn't any time for in the movie. In another interview, Alex Kurtzman cited "scale issues" as an additional reason for dropping Arcee; allegedly, Michael Bay simply considered her too small as compared to the rest of the Autobots. It's commonly assumed that Arcee's big part in the movie would have been the scene in which William Lennox starts his solo assault on Blackout using an abandoned motorcycle. However, the screenwriters rejected that notion, stating that this scene wasn't written until after Arcee had already been dropped from the script—but if she had remained in the movie, that scene would have probably featured her as the motorcycle.

* Arcee came this close to being killed off in The Reign of Starscream, as the trade states that two revisions of the plot had her dying.
: Decepticon (di-sep-ti-con ) A member of a subversive sect or society. From the noun — 'decepticon'; one who deceives.

The Decepticons are one of the primary factions in the Transformers mythos. They are typically concerned with such things as galactic conquest, defeating the Autobots, amassing large quantities of energon, developing powerful weaponry, and beating people up. Not necessarily in that order.

Unlike the Autobots, whose leader is a Prime bearing a Matrix, the Decepticons are led by the most powerful of their ranks. This tends to cause some conflict, given how everyone thinks that they're the most powerful. Also, the Decepticons are not exactly the most compassionate beings in the universe, but not all fight for greed. More than a few have a sense of honor, while others believe that Cybertron would be better protected by aggressive expansion. Ultimately, the Decepticons desire to protect their homeworld, even if it is at the expense of others.
Marvel Comics
The Decepticons emerged from the gladiatorial State Games, which caused Megatron's rise to public prominence - in the aftermath of the destructive Vos-Tarn War, Megatron was able to use his fame and charisma to unite both the survivors and the planet's malcontents into a new army. His plan was to turn Cybertron into a mobile cosmic dreadnought and conquer the galaxy. The Decepticons developed new technology to allow them to transform into attack vehicles and weaponry, launching a devastating attack that killed billions and shook the planet from its orbit before Optimus Prime turned the tide.

Megatron, Shockwave and others were lost on Earth for four million years; as Optimus was too, the Autobots swiftly lost ground to Decepticon leaders Trannis and Straxus. Cybertron was devastated and conquered, causing the cream of the Decepticons to leave the burnt-out planet to form a Cybertronian Empire out in the stars, while Straxus threw all those he considered weak into the Smelting pool. The Empire would go on to slaughter and Cyberform planet after planet, their actions unknown on Cybertron.

Eventually the Earth-bound Decepticons would awaken in 1984, sparking off a new front in the war. After the presumed suicide of Megatron, an escalation in fighting would see Decepticon leadership fragment and change hands rapidly, with frequent clashes, plots and counter-plots between the primary leadership, namely Starscream, Shockwave, Ratbat, and Scorponok, until most of them were killed in the Underbase conflict, leaving Scorponok the only surviving commander. A brief truce with the Autobots was held when Unicron attacked in 1991, but Scorponok was killed in the following conflict. Immediately after this, Bludgeon came to power. Charismatic and driven, Bludgeon turned the beaten Decepticons into a new army; after a defeat on Klo, they regrouped and reorganised. (In one reality, they were immediately massacred afterward.)

Earthforce
In the side-continuity of Earthforce, while Unicron continues on to Cybertron, Megatron and Shockwave continue a Decepticon civil war on Earth with a small handful of troops - wasting most of their time trying to take out each other. Eventually Soundwave and Starscream overthrew them, uniting both factions into a stronger Decepticon force. The two former leaders attempted to regain their position but never appeared to succeed.

Generation 2
Bludgeon invaded Earth with the intention of capturing the Matrix and making a new generation of Decepticons, but Megatron returned, killed Bludgeon in one-on-one combat, and stole this plan. However, the threat of the Cybertronian Empire forced an alliance between the Autobots and Decepticons again.

Classics
Cartoon
Season 1 & 2
In the various continuities descending from Generation 1, the Decepticons and the Autobots are the two great powers in the Transformer population. The factions, however, are not a complete set -- there are Transformers who are unaffiliated / neutral, or even members of smaller or splinter factions.

Many G1 timelines actually credit Megatron as the founder of the Decepticons, not merely its most recent leader. In contrast, Optimus Prime is almost always depicted as only the latest in a long line of Primes or Matrix Bearers.

Eventually, the Decepticons managed to take control of all of Cybertron, forcing the Autobots to operate on Cybertron's two moons, but Autobot City on Earth was viewed as the greater threat. The Decepticons overtook a supply shuttle and launched an attack, with disastrous consequences for the Autobots. The battle saw one of the Decepticons' long held dreams achieved in the death of Optimus Prime, but Megatron was damaged, and left to rot in deep space. Unicron reformatted him into Galvatron, and Galvatron attempted to enslave Unicron with the Matrix of Leadership. When Unicron attacked Cybertron, most of the Decepticon forces on the planet were wiped out, allowing the Autobots to retake control of the planet.

Season 3 & 4
Times would turn harsh for the Decepticons who were forced to abandon their homeworld of Cybertron and get exiled to the burnt out planet of Charr. There they would face constant energy shortages and engage in constant inter-fighting as well as suffer from a lack of leadership. From this chaos came Cyclonus and the Sweeps, who hatch a plan of finding Galvatron who would lead the Decepticons once more.

Eventually, the Autobots, led by a resurrected Optimus Prime, managed to finally defeat the Decepticons.

Dreamwave
The Decepticons arose out of the underground fights that Megatron once partook in. After discovering certain secrets about Cybertron's origin, including massive planetary engines, Megatron began using the games to recruit combatants. For nearly half a million years, they grew in numbers and trained, until they rebelled against the Council of Ancients and took Kaon by force. While the war raged on, the Constructicons repaired the engines and introduced a mecha-forming process, but what they really needed was a power source. Megatron became convinced that he could find one powerful enough within the Matrix, which was in the possession of Sentinel Prime. However, when Megatron finally killed the Prime, he discovered that it was not within him. Soon after, Optronix became Optimus Prime, and Megatron initiated a plan: an assassination team under Communications Officer Soundwave would elimate the Prime and claim the Matrix, while Military Operations Commander Shockwave would lay siege to Iacon, preventing the Autobots from coming to Prime's rescue. However, Megatron made two mistakes: he informed Air Commander Starscream of his intentions, and he underestimated Optimus Prime. The Prime managed to erase some of Megatron's memories of what he discovered, while Starscream activated the mechaforming process using energy from the planetary engines. The engines were destroyed before the process was complete, ruinning both. The War Within

After Megatron disappeared with Optimus Prime in a space bridge test, Shockwave became Decepticon leader, though Starscream and High Auditor Ratbat broke off with their own splinter factions shortly afterwards. The Decepticons allied with Prowl's Autobots and Grimlock's Lightning Strike Coalition (an Autobot splinter group), to stop the machinations of the Fallen. The War Within: The Dark Ages Several thousand years later, Shockwave was prepared to sign a peace treaty with Ultra Magnus, who had become Autobot leader, the LSC, and Ratbat's Ultracons. However, Megatron returned with the Aerospace Extermination Squadron, an army of Quintesson created seeker drones, whose abilities allowed the Decepticons to fully conquer Cybertron and enslave the Autobots. The Decepticons' control over Cybertron was ended when Optimus Prime returned to Cybertron and the Air Warriors were defeated. The War Within: The Age of Wrath

When Megatron disappeared along with the Nemesis crew, Shockwave again emerged as Decepticon leader, this time as head of a triumverate including Ratbat and Scorponok. With energon becomeing scarce, Shockwave agreed to work with Ultra Magnus and Fortress Maximus in the creation of the Micromasters, Transformers who were downsized for better fuel efficiency. Shockwave suffered a rebellion when Skystalker overthrew him, using Shockwave's severed head as a tool. Micromasters However, all Transformers on Cybertron entered stasis lock when the Great Shutdown occurred. Around 1,000 B.C.E., Shockwave was reactivated by Scourge, and then defeated the Unicronian Transformer. Studying Scourge and discovering some of the secrets Megatron had learned, Shockwave made peace with the Autobots, installing himself as Head of State with an Autobot High Council as a legislature, while Ultra Magnus became his senior security officer. However, the High Councillors were unsuited for peace time government, and gradually gave Shockwave more and more power...which is exactly what he had planned.

On Earth, the Nemesis crew was reawakened in 1984. Cut off from Cybertron, the Decepticons concluded that they had no other choice but to conquer the planet. Megatron soon learned that others had come looking for them, including Jetfire and the Dynobots. The Decepticons captured Jetfire and the Dinobots except Grimlock, and used the hostage situation to force Grimlock to serve the Decepticons. Additionally, the Constructicons located Earth and served under Megatron. In 1998, the Autobots allied with humanity to defeat the Decepticons. They were to be returned to Cybertron in the Ark II, but Shockwave, through a human intermediary, sabotaged the Ark II, causing the ship to crash and send the Transformers aboard into stasis lock. Renegade members of the United States Military managed to capture the Decepticons and a number of Autobots, intending to use them as instruments of war, but Adam Rook later stole them and set himself up as an arms dealer. Unfortunately, Megatron overwhelmed the programming that kept him a prisoner, and freed the other Decepticons. Megatron then intended to unleash a technovirus on Earth, but the Autobots defeated him. Prime Directive

A year later, Shockwave arrived to tie up loose ends, quickly capturing Megatron and the Nemesis crew. Starscream ejected Megatron out of the ship carrying them to Cybertron, leaving him to die in space. The Nemesis crew were granted amnesty, but Starscream quickly recruited them into going back to Earth to conquer the planet, taking the Combaticons with them. Shockwave was finally overthrown when Optimus Prime united the Autobot resistance groups, but he escaped with a small number of troops. War and Peace

Meanwhile, Megatron was rescued by Wreck-Gar, who repaired his memory loss. Using some recovered Air Warriors, Megatron located the Predacons, who were used take control of Shockwave's small army. On Earth, Starscream's failures during Sunstorm's rampage were reason enough to convince the Nemesis crew to mutiny against Starscream in Megatron's favor. With two combiner teams, an army of seekers, Soundwave's cassettes, and knowledge of Earth's connection to Cybertron, Megatron prepared to lead the Decepticons on the conquests of Earth and Cybertron Generation One (Dreamwave comic)...
The Decepticons appear to have been formed out of the uprising in Kaon that Megatron spearheaded in Megatron: Origin. They also may have competely abandoned Cybertron, and have bases set up on the worlds they've captured or space stations as seen in Spotlight: Sixshot.

Aftermath
Both sides signed the Pax Cybertronia, which eventually led to peace, but left the Decepticons in a second class position.

Beast Era
In Beast Wars continuity, the Predacons were the descendants of the Decepticons and fought with the same aggression and ideas of conquest. They faced the Maximals in the same way their ancestors had fought the Autobots.

In the Robots in Disguise cartoon, the Decepticons were a brand new faction that came into being during the events of the story. Because there were so few Decepticons (only six or seven), and because they were a subset of the Predacon antagonists, they can almost be viewed as a subgroup rather than a proper faction. The RiD Decepticons were created on Earth when Megatron's forces captured a set of stasis pods from an ancient Transformer spaceship that had been found on Earth, leading to the birth of the Commandos and Scourge. The toy version of Galvatron was also labeled as a Decepticon, although this "change" in the character's faction was only mentioned once in the cartoon series.

In the Japanese version of RiD, Car Robots, the Decepticons were known as Combatrons. This is the same name by which the G1 Combaticons were called in Japan.

For the Hasbro toy line, several other non-show Decepticons were added to the ranks to help fill out the line. It is unknown how most of these actually fit into the story, though one of them, Axer, is actually a dimension-hopper who arrived from the Generation 1 universe.

Unicron Trilogy
Animated continuity
Armada
The exact origins of the Decepticon faction are a bit muddled. It is widely assumed, though never directly confirmed, that the movement was founded by Megatron. Also, the enslavement of the power-enhancing Mini-Cons is considered to be the impetus to the Decepticons' rise to a massive multi-planet-spanning army, though at what point in the war this occurred is unclear; it's possible the Mini-Cons' arrival was what gave Megatron the opportunity to rise to power, or that they arrived after the war had already begun.

Either way, the Mini-Cons fueled the war machine for centuries, and the war with the Autobots soon spread from Cybertron to other worlds. The self-imposed exile of the Mini-Cons to an unknown destination was seen as a major setback for the Decepticons (and something of a pyrrhic victory for the Autobots), but despite this, the war continued, as both sides had amassed a large enough power base to continue on without the little buggers.

The Autobots and Decepticons seemed to fight to a stalemate, neither able to gain a distinct advantage over the other. When a signal reached Cybertron centuries later that the Mini-Cons had landed on Earth, it seems neither side was capable of sending a full force to retrieve them, despite the power they contained. Though the Decepticon force sent to Earth was small in numbers, it was far from insignificant; Megatron himself led the squad, backed by some of his most trusted warriors.

When Megatron returned to Cybertron, the overwhelming majority of the Mini-Cons were in the protective custody of the Autobots, but Megatron was unfazed; he had assembled the Mini-Cons required to make the three legendary weapons the Star Saber, Skyboom Shield and Requiem Blaster. Bolstered by this new power and the apparent death of Optimus Prime, Megatron attempted to take Cybertron once and for all.

But Megatron's return to Cybertron was the beginning of the end of the Decepticon army. When Unicron revealed himself as a threat to both armies, fueled by the negative psychic energies from centuries of death and destruction, the two sides eventually joined together to beat back the planet-eater. Despite the truce, Megatron and Prime engaged in a brutal duel on the surface of the weakened Unicron after the three legendary weapons had been removed from his core. Realizing their battle was keeping Unicron active, Megatron sacrificed himself, and both Unicron and Megatron disappeared into nothingness.

Energon
Megatron's final orders to his troops still stood: work with the Autobots. The Decepticons maintained a degree of autonomy, still wearing the faction sigil and often taking military/defensive positions in the growing number of energon-mining colonies, but they were ultimately answerable to Optimus Prime and the Autobots. There were, of course, dissenters, most of which were captured and imprisoned. For a decade, Autobot and Decepticon worked side-by-side in a somewhat stable truce.

Both sides found themselves the target of attacks from Unicron again; hordes of Terrorcon drones, sent by Alpha Quintesson to steal energon ore with which to revive the now-shattered husk of Unicron. What the alien did not count on was that Megatron's spark had survived within the remains, and was siphoning energon from Unicron's body. Soon the Decepticon leader had revived himself in a new form, drove off Alpha Quintesson, and along with an elite cadre of soldiers and a seemingly inexhaustible supply of mindless Terrorcon drones, began his new plans for conquest.

When news of Megatron's return reached Cybertron, hundreds of Decepticons rose up and rebelled, eager to get back to conquering. But having been joined to Unicron for so long apparently had given Megatron a taste of godhood; he had no more interest in amassing a galaxy-spanning army of troops. Countless Decepticons died in the resulting battles, with Megatron more than willing to sacrifice them without a thought to attain ultimate power for himself. As the "Powerlinx Battles" -as they came to be called- came to their climax, Megatron found that his actions and thoughts were being influenced and controlled by the dark spark of Unicron. Unwilling to let Unicron stand in his way, Megatron ultimately sacrificed himself (again) and seemingly destroyed Unicron's spark by plunging himself into a newly-formed energon sun created by Primus.

Cybertron
What little remained of the once-mighty Decepticon army after Megatron's loss was at best a loose association of criminals, thugs, and lunatics, with no real political or military power to speak of. For a decade, Cybertron was once again at peace, with the population overwhelmingly Autobot or neutral. The Transformers had withdrawn from Earth and its other colonies to focus on revitalizing their homeworld after the devastation of the Powerlinx Battles. However, two great catastrophes shattered this peace; the energon sun collapsed in on itself, forming the powerful black hole known as the Unicron Singularity, which threatened to devour Cybertron and, if left unchecked, the entire universe... and the return yet once again of Megatron, who had absorbed much of what remained of Unicron's power.

Megatron's goal of attaining godhood was now at hand. By obtaining the legendary Omega Lock and the four Cyber Planet Keys, Megatron intended to accelerate the growth of the black hole, consuming the universe in a vast sea of nothingness that only he would survive, then use his powers to re-create the universe in his image.

To this end, he had no need of an army. He gathered a small group of allies and lackeys to seek the items he needed, but they were nothing more than pawns to him, to be used and discarded at a whim.

The Decepticons briefly regained their status as a mass army of individuals when Starscream, who had long suffered at Megatron's hands since the beginning of the Decepticons, made his own bid for ultimate power with the help of the Planet X agent Sideways. Having sealed Megatron and his troops in a trap, Starscream freed hundreds of criminal Transformers who had been locked up on Earth for millennia, and formed his own globe-spanning army. The Decepticon "Monsters" were tasked with finding the Omega Lock and Earth's Cyber Planet Key, which they eventually brought to their leader. However, numerous Decepticons were killed in the battles with the Autobots, and it soon became apparent that Starscream, like Megatron before him, didn't care. Most of these criminals soon abandoned Starscream and went into hiding.

As for Megatron, he too had deserters among his own considerably-small ranks. Most notably, the powerful Scourge, leader of the Jungle Planet and the colossal Menasor from Gigantion, both of whom eventually joined forces with their former enemies the Autobots.

This was not seen as a concern for Megatron, however, as by this time Starscream and his allies were seemingly destroyed on Gigantion, and Megatron (now calling himself "Galvatron" again) had the Omega Lock and all four Keys. What few Decepticons remained loyal to him were too stupid to see what Galvatron had planned, and made perfect distractions as he set his final plan in motion. If they weren't strong enough to survive the coming cataclysm, then so be it.

Ultimately, Galvatron's plan failed, and the Unicron Singularity was sealed. His remaining Decepticons quickly left him, realizing what was likely to have happened to them, and eventually joined the Autobots. After Galvatron's seemingly-final defeat and death in a one-on-one duel with Optimus Prime on Cybertron's moon, the Decepticons, not knowing when to quit, rose again, albeit in a rather pathetic fashion. Having cobbled together a rather rickety rocket, Ransack, Crumplezone and Thunderblast shanghaied the reluctant Thundercracker, who was really keen on being on the winning side for once, and flew off to parts unknown as the New Decepticon "Army".

They made it to Mars before the rocket crash-landed.

Meanwhile, the Autobot Wing Saber reported form a deep-space recon mission that he thought he had picked up traces of Starscream, seemingly backed up by Sideways and Soundwave. Landmine and the former Decepticon Mudflap raced off to join Wing Saber and investigate...

Comics continuity
Armada
Founded by Megatron, the exact number of the original Decepticons is unknown. Using the Mini-Cons as weapons, they were able to conquer Cybertron and force the Autobots underground. Eventually they were beaten due to the arrival of Unicron: his heralds slaughtered the entire Decepticon base on Cybertron, and the Chaos-Bringer's arrival forced them to join forces with the Autobots. With Megatron shot dead during the Unicron battle, the peace held for a period of years.

Transformers (2007) movie
The Decepticons are the Transformers who sided with Lord High Protector Megatron and attempted to seize the All Spark. Their numbers ranged from the treacherous, the fanatical, the violent, and the spastic, to the treacherously fanatically violent spazzes. The Decepticons overwhelmed the valiant yet peaceful Autobots, and Optimus Prime made the desperate decision to launch the All Spark into deep space. Megatron obsessively followed after it, and disappeared. Starscream took over leadership, and began a search for Megatron and the All Spark. After a while, Starscream began to focus more on the All Spark, hoping Megatron would remain lost, something the other Decepticons began to suspect.

The Decepticons are, in general, less human in appearance than the Autobots in the movie, resembling carnivorous mammals, birds, insects or the Decepticon insignia itself. The comics show that the Decepticons are overstretched on Cybertron: they use drone units to bolster their forces and many of their outposts are mostly automated.

In a departure from previous Transformers incarnations, Japan used the name "Decepticons" for this franchise, rather than "Destrons".

Animated
4 million stellar cycles ago, the Autobots and Decepticons battled each other in what is now known as The Great War. The Autobots pulled a victory after sending the AllSpark into deep space. Defeated, the Decepticons dispersed, and according to Ultra Magnus, the only sight of them would be an occasional scout ship. In fact, they had been missing for so long, Optimus Prime believed a Decepticon presence was a thing of the past. This was quickly reassessed upon encountering Megatron's crew.

The Decepticons in Transformers: Animated are planned to be fought by the Autobots a lot less than in previous continuities, instead staying mostly in the background, thus making it more momentous whenever they do appear. To go with this plan, the Decepticons are, for the most part, stronger than the Autobots in this series. In fact, after the AllSpark was destroyed it's mentioned that the only advantage that Autobots had over the Decepticons were their exclusive access to space bridges (which, according to Megatron at least, is one of two things that led to Decepticons' defeat, the other being the AllSpark).

Among the Decepticons, there is one guiding principle: rule of the strong. Where as the leader of the Autobots consults his subordinates, the strongest and the most powerful Decepticon leads, everyone else is expected to follow without question. But strength of body is not enough. One must also have the brains to lead, the intelligence to outwit their rivals and plan their victories. ====Marvel Comics continuity====
Marvel Comics
noteukonly
Megatron was at first the sole Decepticon leader. Under his leadership, much of Cybertron was conquered. When Megatron disappeared, Trannis siezed power, destroying Iacon and forcing the Autobots underground. After the Wreckers killed Trannis, Straxus took command of the Decepticons on Cybertron.

When Megatron was defeated shortly after the Decepticons reactivated, Military Operations Commander Shockwave defeated the Autobots and usurped Megatron, reducing him to second-in-command. However, Megatron was soon defeated by the Dinobots, allowing Shockwave to fully assume command. Megatron's subsequent return saw a joint leadership, while Megatron was able to use logic to convince Shockwave to give him full leadership. After seemingly killing Optimus Prime, Megatron went mad and apparently killed himself, allowing Shockwave to assume full leadership again.

Meanwhile, after receiving a mayday from the Earth bound Decepticons, Straxus constructed a space bridge that linked Earth and Cybertron, only for Straxus to be killed when it was attacked by Perceptor's resistance cell. Fuel Auditor Ratbat emerged as the most powerful Decepticon in Polyhex, entering into an uneasy alliance with Shockwave. While this was going on, the Decepticon Scorponok took his unit to follow Fortress Maximus to Nebulos, where he underwent binary bonding with Zarak. Following Fortress Maximus to Earth, Scorponok also entered an uneasy alliance with Shockwave and Ratbat. With this many bytes of aggression, the stage was set for a coup.

Ultimately, it came about that Air Commander Starscream was the catalyst that launched a rebellion. When the Decepticons learned that the legendary Underbase was coming to Earth, Starscream caused the Decepticons to turn against each other. By the end of the conflict, Shockwave was presumed to have burned up on reentry into Earth's atmosphere, Ratbat was shot dead by Scorponok, and Starscream killed when he tried to absorb the Underbase's power. Without any rivals, Scorponok easily settled into power as Earth's sole Decepticon leader.

Meanwhile, on Cybertron, Thunderwing petitioned the Decepticon High Council to be appointed leader of the Decepticon army. His bid was successful. Learning that the Autobots were searching for the Creation Matrix, Thunderwing managed to gain the Matrix and corrupted it. Thunderwing was ultimately killed, and the Matrix believed destroyed. With Unicron fast approaching Cybertron, Optimus Prime made the decision to surrender to Scorponok, in return for allying with the Autobots against Unicron. Scorponok planned to betray Prime, but Zarak latter agreed to the alliance. However, Scorponok's troops were growing disgruntled, especially by his recruitment of Starscream, who had decimated them months earlier then was resurrected by Megatron, who had survived his space bridge suicide (only to be fused together with Autobot Chief Medical Officer Ratchet). Taking advantage of this, Shockwave, who had survived his burn-up, managed to get several disgruntled Decepticons to ally with him and attack Scorponok's group. Ultimately, they were all transported to Cybertron by Primus, who named Optimus Prime as the commander of Cybertron's united army.

During the battle with Unicron, Optimus Prime and Scorponok were both killed. As Shockwave and Starscream fled the dying Cybertron, Bludgeon was acclaimed Decepticon leader by the surviving Decepticons. He led the Decepticons in the conquest of Klo, then massacred the Autobots who arrived to stop them. However, Optimus Prime had been revived by the Last Autobot, whom Bludgeon had worshipped as the Ultimate Warrior. The Last Autobot revived the fallen Autobots, and Bludgeon agreed to lead the Decepticons into exile...planning to bide their time.

Shockwave, meanwhile, had hijacked the Ark alongside Starscream with the intention of using it to conquer Earth. He didn't count on an alternate timeline Galvatron to have attempted the same thing. He also didn't count on Ratchet and Megatron to be on board the Ark in stasis, though, nor did he expect the pair to awaken during the journey. While Megatron kept Shockwave and Starscream occupied, Ratchet forced the Ark to crash violently into the ground. Galvatron was the only one to emerge from the crash, and he appeared to be the only survivor.

Generation 2
After his resurrection, Megatron challenged Bludgeon for leadership of the Decepticons. After a fierce battle, Megatron emerged victorious.
Generation 1 cartoon
At first, the Decepticons were lead by an old Decepticon who could not transform. However, when he lost the Second Cybertronian War against the Autobots, he was replaced with Megatron, who lead the Decepticons to conquer much of Cybertron. However, when Megatron and Optimus Prime disappeared, the war on Cybertron entered a stalemate. Shockwave had been appointed Guardian of Cybertron in Megatron's absence, and became de facto Decepticon leader. Once Megatron resumed contact with Cybertron, Shockwave resubmitted to his authority. More Than Meets the Eye, Part 1 Transport to Oblivion

Air Commander Starscream, long contemptuous of Megatron's leadership, made several attempts to supplant Megatron. They all ended with failure, usually due to his own impatience or the other Decepticons loyalty to Megatron. However, Starscream eventually decided to get some help. He made plans with Blitzwing and Astrotrain to trap Megatron in a tunnel and freeze him. However, the Triple Changers betrayed Starscream, leaving them both to freeze, and proceeded to wreak havoc. Megatron and Starscream were freed due to an accident on Astrotrain's part, and after defeating Astrotrain, Blitzwing, Devastator, and Starscream, Megatron resumed leadership of the Decepticons. Triple Takeover

By 2005, the Decepticons had conquered Cybertron. However, the Autobots retained a control of two moons and held a reserve force at Autobot City. Megatron launched an assault on Autobot City, where he and Optimus Prime motrally wounded each other. During the trip back to Cybertron, Astrotrain required the Decepticons to jettison excess weight or he would be unable to make it back. The wounded Decepticons were thrown over board to allow the survivors to return, with Starscream personally ejecting Megatron. After a mild scuffle aboard Astrotrain, Starscream emerged as the new Decepticon leader. However, Megatron was discovered by Unicron, and reformatted into Galvatron. With a new body and troops, Galvatron returned to Cybertron and killed Starscream with a single blast. Galvatron was hailed as the new leader of the Decepticons. The Transformers: The Movie

After Unicron's attack on Cybertron and the disappearance of Galvatron, the Decepticons fled to Chaar. Without strong leaders like Galvatron, Starscream, or Shockwave, the Decepticons fell into a period of disunity, where they fought each other for scraps of Energon. Ultimately, Cyclonus located Galvatron, who reorganized the Decepticons. Five Faces of Darkness

Robot Masters
After the disappearance of Megatron, the leadership of the Decepticons was helmed by Starscream. However, a Megatron from another time challenged Starscream for leadership and won.

Dreamwave
At first, Megatron was the sole leader of the Decepticons, with his chief lieutenants being Air Commander Starscream, Military Operations Commander Shockwave, and Communications Officer Soundwave. The War Within After Megatron was believed to have been destroyed along with Optimus Prime in a space bridge explosion, Shockwave became Decepticon leader.
After Megatron, Starscream, and Soundwave disappeared chasing Optimus Prime's crew aboard the Ark, Shockwave emerged as Decepticon leader, this time as part of a triumvirate that included Scorponok and Ratbat. He was briefly overthrown by Skystalker, who used his head to issue commands to Shockwave's troops, but Skystalker was defeated and Shockwave resumed command. Micromasters (comic). With the Great Shutdown, all Transformers entered a period of enforced stasis lock. Shockwave was reactivated by Unicron's herald Scrouge, but Shockwave defeated Scourge, studying him. Learning secrets about Cybertron that Megatron had previously discovered, Shockwave made peace with the Autobots, installing himself as Head of State with an Autobot High Council as a legislature. On Earth, Megatron retained command of the Nemesis crew, but he was defeated when Shockwave arrived, intent on gaining the Matrix from Optimus Prime. Starscream ejected Megatron from the ship transporting them back to Cybertron, then recruited the Nemesis crew and the Combaticons to conquer Earth. When Optimus Prime was brought to Cybertron, he united the Autobot resistance groups and overthrew Shockwave. Prime Directive War and Peace
Meanwhile, Megatron was repaired by Wreck-Gar, and managed to locate a trio of Air Warriors he used to recruit the Predacons. Heading for Cybertron, he took command of Shockwave's forces, forcing Shockwave into a subordinate state. On Earth, Starscream's failures against the Autobots and Sunstorm made Soundwave, his cassettes, and the Seekers all too willing to mutiny against Starscream in favor of Megatron. Generation One (Dreamwave comic)

Animated
Styled Supreme Leader, the title was held by Megatron for over four million solar cycles, since the days of the Great War. When Megatron was believed killed trying to secure the AllSpark, Starscream immediately nominated himself the new Supreme leader...no one took him seriously. Transform and Roll Out!

He finally did manage to get the Decepticons Lugnut and Blitzwing to swear allegiance to him in exchange for repairs. Lost and Found However, this was also short-lived, as Lugnut was really taking orders from the disembodied head of Megatron. Megatron Rising - Part 1 After his restoration, the Decepticons repledged their loyalty to Megatron, who decided to reinforce it by seriously damaging Starscream. Megatron Rising - Part 2

Trivia
*Unlike the Autobots, whose leader is called a Prime, the Decepticon leader has no official name or rank.
*Being Decepticon leader means that Laserbeak has to perch on your shoulder. Seriously.
A franchise, for lack of a better term, is an incarnation or "generation" of the Transformers brand. The word is used here to refer to the collection of not just toys, but also media, merchandise, and ideas that surround each of these incarnations. Because of these other elements, the word "toyline" would not be broad enough; the toyline is just the toy component of the whole thing.

US Franchises
There have been many franchises over the two decades that Transformers has been around. A list follows.

* 1984-1991: Generation 1 is the retroactively-applied term for the original toys and associated media, including the original cartoon and Marvel comics. Many later toy lines have been based around Generation 1's fiction and characters.

* 1993-1995: Generation 2 was a relaunch of the toy line, a mix of old and new toy designs. A new comic continued the story of the Marvel G1 comics, while the G1 cartoon was re-edited and rebroadcast.

* 1996-2001: Beast Wars changed the direction of the line with robots that changed into "realistically"-styled animals, and soon moved into other varieties of animal-alt-mode robots. It was supported by a CGI cartoon.

* 1997: Machine Wars was a limited line of redecorated older toys, released to capitalize on the popularity of Beast Wars. Fiction was limited to on-package bios.

* 1999: Animorphs was a short-lived franchise using the Transformers name but unrelated with regard to fictional backstory. As this line was in support of a non-Transformers fictional universe, no specific fiction was tied to the toy line.

* 2000-2001: Beast Machines continued the directions of Beast Wars and added futuristic vehicles to the mix. The latter portion of this franchise was subtitled "The Battle for the Spark". Like Beast Wars, it was supported by a CGI cartoon.

* 2001-2002: 1-2-3 Transformers was a short-lived line of large, simple toys aimed at younger children. The line's niche was later filled by the Go-Bots line. No fiction exists for this franchise.

* 2001-2003: Robots in Disguise was a port of the Japanese Car Robots toyline and cartoon, padded out with additional toys in the US.

* 2002: Expanded Universe was a short-lived labeling of BotCon toys. It was only used for 2002 and only consisted of CatSCAN, Cyclonus, Glyph, and Tap-Out. For simplicity, most people combine this line with the later Universe line.

* 2002-2003: Armada marked a new beginning for the toys and fiction, heralded by the addition of the Mini-Con faction. The latter portion of the franchise was subtitled "The Unicron Battles". It was marketed in Japan as Micron Legend. The toyline was supported by a full cartoon series, comic book, pack-in mini-comics, on-line bios, and a great deal of ancillary merchandise.

* 2002-2004: The Commemorative Series consisted of reissued toys from the first three years of Generation 1, primarily available at Toys 'R' Us. The toys were previously reissued by Takara in Japan, in the Transformers Collection line. As a reissue line, fiction was limited solely to on-package bios.

* 2003-2005: Universe supplemented the wildly successful Armada with redecos of older toys and convention-based fiction. Package blurbs provided a general fictional overview, and the line was briefly supported by a comic book.

* 2003: Built to Rule consisted of Lego-compatible building blocks used to assemble various transformable Armada characters. It received no fiction independent of Armada.

* 2003-2005: Go-Bots introduced a line of larger, simple toys aimed at children too young for the mainline toys. Fiction included on-package bios and a short-lived cartoon.

* 2003-2005: Energon followed up on Armada. The latter portion of the franchise was subtitled "The Powerlinx Battles". It was marketed in Japan as Superlink. Fiction included a full cartoon series, a comic book, pack-in mini-comics, and on-line bios.

* 2003-2006: Alternators, a toy-only franchise, combined licensed, 1/24th-scale replica vehicles with complex transformations and Generation 1 characters. It was marketed in Japan as Binaltech. The American franchise received no fiction beyond an on-package character quote.

* 2005-2006: Cybertron completed the arc begun by Armada, capping off the "Unicron Trilogy". The latter portion of the franchise was subtitled "Primus Unleashed". It was marketed in Japan as Galaxy Force. Fiction included a cartoon, on-package blurbs and pack-in "Planet Maps" with character bios and profiles of various worlds.

* 2006-: Star Wars combines the transforming play pattern with the characters and vehicles of the popular movie franchise. Fiction was limited to on-package bios, as this line was in support of a non-Transformers fictional universe.

* 2006: The Beast Wars 10th Anniversary limited line featured 6 reissues of older Beast Wars toys with special packaging, new decos and bonus features, and two all-new molds. Fiction included on-package bios and pack-in DVDs of Beast Wars cartoon episodes.

* 2006-2007: Classics was a line of rehashed Generation 1 characters intended to be a stopgap while the 2007 movie toys were being prepared. Its success prompted Hasbro to continue it as the "Classic Series" under the 2008 Universe line. Fiction was limited to a fan club comic.

* 2006-2007: The Titanium Series was aimed specifically at fans, with a range of characters from older franchises and more obscure corners of the fiction, and die-cast metal designs. As the characters are all based on previous franchises, fiction consisted solely of on-package bios.

* 2007: The "Movie" franchise marked a new level for Transformers, with the live-action film as its centerpiece. The later portion of the toyline, primarily consisting of redecos, was subtitled "Allspark Power". In addition to the movie itself, fiction included various comics, bios, package blurbs, and other ancillary merchandise.

* 2008: Transformers Animated is the first American-written cartoon franchise in just under a decade. It carries on the brand with a new look and some old familiar faces. Fiction includes the cartoon, a comic book series, and on-package bios.

* 2008: Universe re-uses the catch-all name of several years prior, but is a new umbrella franchise over the Classics and Robot Heroes lines. It is not slated to receive any fiction.

* 2008: Crossovers rebrands the Star Wars line, as well bringing in transforming Marvel characters, following the New Avengers / Transformers crossover comic.

Japanese Franchises
Generation 1
Beginning in 1986, (the second year of the franchise in Japan), Takara got into the habit of annually rebranding the Transformers property. Moreover, 1987's The Headmasters kicked off a trend in which Takara's toylines and fiction branched off from Hasbro's versions to increasingly significant degrees. Thus, the later iterations of Japanese Generation 1 are often referred to as "franchises", despite being part of the larger Generation 1 franchise. They include:

*1985: Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers

*1986: Transformers 2010

*1987: The Headmasters

*1988: Super-God Masterforce

*1989: Victory

*1990: Zone

*1991: Return of Convoy

*1992: Operation Combination

Beast Wars
To fill the sometimes-lengthy gap between the seasons of the Beast Wars television show, Takara decided to augment that series with two Japanese-exclusive franchises.
*1998: Beast Wars II, with a toyline mostly consisting of redecorated existing Beast Wars toys.

*1999: Beast Wars Neo, additional redecos combined with numerous new molds.

Post-Beast Wars
* 2000: Car Robots was a mixed line of complex new molds and redecorated toys from previous lines. An expanded version was later marketed in America as Robots in Disguise.

*2002-2004: Micromaster Collection re-released the various Japanese-exclusive Micromaster combining teams from late in the Generation 1 era.

*2001(?)-?: Transformers Collection consisted of book-boxed reissues of toys from the early years of Generation 1. Many of the same toys would subsequently be reissued in the United States in the Commemorative Series line.

*2003: Smallest Transforming Transformers (often mislabeled "World's Smallest Transformers") reworked early Generation 1 toys at extremely small scale.

*2003-2006: Binaltech, Japan's version of Alternators.

*2003- : Masterpiece is a collector-oriented series of "ultimate" versions of classic G1 characters, with great complexity and high prices.

*2004-2005: Robot Masters was a line of mixed heritage, collecting characters from several continuities. Most of its toys were redecos or new designs based on larger toys reduced in scale.

*2006-2007: Kiss Players picked up the tail end of the Binaltech/Alternators toyline, but with an all-new, all-creepy storyline.

*2007: Beast Wars Telemocha Series was Japan's expanded equivalent of the Beast Wars 10th Anniversary line.

*2007- : Transformers Encore revives the trend of reissuing older Generation 1 toys, including many not previously available in Japan.

Elsewhere
*1990-1991: Classics was the name of a Generation 1 subline in Europe and Australia, reissuing many toys from 1984 through 1986.

Merchandising Franchises
Several lines of non-transforming figures have been released, capitalizing on the popularity of the Transformers characters.

* 2000-?: Super Collection Figure, a Japanese line of PVC figures based on character models from the Generation 1 cartoon. It was later marketed in America as Heroes of Cybertron, with some minor alterations.
* 2002-2003: MyClone, a Transformers iteration of a super-deformed figure line in Japan.
* 2007: Robot Heroes, adorably cute figurines of various characters. It continues under Universe (2008).

Since then, Furman has also written Transformers comics for Dreamwave Productions, IDW Publishing, and 3H, and scripted the final episode of the Beast Wars cartoon, "Nemesis Part 2".

He has also written and created many non-Transformers characters, including Death's Head with Geoff Senior and "Brute Force" with Jose Delbo. He is an editor at Titan Books, which publishes collections of Transformers comics, among other material.

Furman is a highly prolific writer, and well-regarded in the fandom. As a result he is often the first, last, and occasionally only resort in penning Transformers literature, with a deep involvement a wide variety of product. Notably, he penned Transformers: The Ultimate Guide, a book which described the background of several continuities of which he was not particularly involved in crafting. This book has seen significant criticism for being biased towards comic canon (particularly that which he penned) and in places, inventing continuity wholecloth without any precedent in prior fiction. In such instances it has since been assumed that Furman was filling in neglected areas of the (at the time underdeveloped) Dreamwave continuity.

Contrary to the popular opinion that he is an outspoken critic of the Generation 1 animated series, Furman has stated in an interview that he loves the series, and explained that when he was involved the Marvel comic books as a twenty-something year old writer, he thought the show was pitched a little young, stories were simplistic and had huge logic flaws, but conceded that he saw them from a different perspective than the generation that grew up watching the cartoon and buying the toys as kids, and so he concentrated on his work which he believed was more 'adult' in tone. He added that in hindsight he went back to watch the series and now really enjoys it, particularly Season 2's strong character stories. When he wrote for Marvel comics, he was averse to episodes that dealt with the character back-stories because they clashed with his own back-stories, and also caused him to worry that he wasn't presenting the characters as intended. But now he has the freedom to take the series as a viewer and admire the way they were building upon their own mythos.

In the same interview, he thought the the animated movie was 'fantastic', and one of his stated reasons was that 'characters died'.

Not surprisingly, Furman enjoys drinking Corona and killing off hordes of background characters.

Fiction
Unicron Trilogy continuity
The flesh creature known as Simon Furman pleases Unicron with his accurate depiction of Unicron's omnipotent magnificence. The End

Titan Magazines
According to Starscream, Furman is a Maximal disguised as a "strategically shaved ape. Especially on his head." Transformers Comic issue 7
