==Synopsis==
Autobot security escorts Starscream away from the other detained Decepticons held in the [[Kaon]] holding cells. They take Starscream to stand before the Council of the district, to whom Starscream delivers a message: Everything that has happened is the council's fault. As punishment for their sins, Starscream and Soundwave destroy the council, etching their [[insignia|symbol]] into the meeting room's view screen.

The next stage in Megatron's master plan carried out by Starscream is to free all the inmates. Starscream releases them all, and the criminals with prior association with Megatron are recruited into his new army. Soundwave provides armaments, and Starscream introduces Megatron to a new arm-mounted [[fusion cannon]]. Blasting a hole in the wall with his new weapon, Megatron orders the group to attack with an offensive that is as simple as it is destructive: Everything burns.

In an area inhabited by Cybertron's high class, snooty recreation comes to an end when Skywarp and Thundercracker fire upon an airborne vessel, causing it to crash below, destroying an incredible amount on the way down.

Soundwave meets with his boss, Senator Ratbat. The senator admits that not only did he aid Megatron's cause by supplying arms, he was also the one who arranged for Megatron to be removed from the mining operation where he was originally working. Now that Megatron's forces have destabilized the area, the senator is embezzling what he can before moving on to new pastures. Soundwave, however, shoots Ratbat, takes Ratbat's ill-gotten gains, and seals his [[spark]] inside of a frame{{m-}}his new "cassette" body. Evidently, Soundwave prefers Megatron as his new boss.

Sentinel Prime and the other [[Autobot]]s fight to retake Kaon from the rioting rebellion. However, the rebels are causing massive damage, have jammed communications with [[Iacon]], and just won't give an inch of ground. Running out of options, Sentinel Prime decides to bring his incredible assortment of firepower (using his Apex System) head to head against Megatron. A colossal explosion blasts Megatron out of sight.

Sentinel Prime radios to the other Autobots that he's created a route that can be used to fight against the enemy. But when his armor's helmet is shattered by Hound's body, he discovers that Megatron still functions. Their struggle takes them over a precipice as they battle while discussing Megatron's goal: Megatron wants to transform the world. With a final strike, Megatron (possibly) kills the [[Prime (rank)|Prime]].

The other Autobots arrive, following Sentinel Prime. They find their leader's body. Prowl, assuming command, orders a retreat.

Megatron sits on his throne and discusses the victory with Soundwave. Now that Kaon has been taken, the next step is clear{{m-}}the rest of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] shall be conquered. But they will not do is as Cybertronians. From this day forward, they are the [[Decepticon]]s.

'''Blackarachnia''' hates her techno-organic beast mode with a passion. Once she was an [[Autobot Academy]] cadet, but when she was abandoned on an alien world by her [[Optimus Prime (Animated)|former]] [[Sentinel Prime (Animated)|teammates]], she was forced to adapt to the monstrous organic lifeforms that inhabited the world. Now she is trapped between organic and machine, unable to take a new form. The experience fueled a newfound hatred of the [[Autobot]]s and a quest for revenge that led her to join [[Megatron (Animated)|Megatron]] in his war against them, but she doesn't appear to hold any real loyalty toward him. Her hatred of her organic body is driving her insane, and she will do ''anything'' to get rid of it, no matter whom she has to crush in her path.

By stabbing other mechanoids with the spider legs projecting over her shoulders, she has the unique ability to download and mimic their traits and weaponry for a limited amount of time. Hope nobody told [[Lockdown]].

Blackarachnia acts differently around robots of the "opposite sex" depending on faction; she's bitting and sarcastic towards the Decepticons, but seductive and manipulative towards the Autobots. However, these appear to be but shells worn by a being who desperately wants to be normal again.

Blackarachnia was previously known as '''Elita-1'''. A thousand [[Units of time|stellar cycles]] ago Elita and her teammates, [[Optimus Prime (Animated)|Optimus]] and [[Sentinel Prime (Animated)|Sentinel]], were exploring an alien world, looking for a Decepticon ship filled with [[energon]]. They accidentally fell into a series of caves. They were ambushed by giant spiders and, when escaping the massive energon explosion caused by the battle, Elita ended up being left behind. When she tried using her ability to borrow powers from other beings, she was injected by the spiders' venom, turning her into the hideous freak she is now. Because of her new, semi-organic nature, her signal did not appear on Optimus's radar, leading him and Sentinel to believe that she had perished in the explosion. {{storylink|Along Came a Spider}}

When the [[AllSpark (Animated)|AllSpark]] was found by a group of Autobots, Blackarachnia was aboard the [[Nemesis (Animated)|''Nemesis'']] with the other Decepticons, annoyed at [[Lugnut]]'s emphatic, vocal loyalty to Megatron. She even suggested that Lugnut's speech of praise was hardwired into his mind. She also had conflict with [[Blitzwing (Animated)|Blitzwing]], who touched a sore point by insulting her organic mode. Her retort to "blow it out your actuator, three-face" angered Blitzwing to the point that he...began to express his feelings in song. Later, at Megatron's orders, she scanned the Autobots' ship to determine the nature of their high-energy cargo. She confirmed the Autobots were carrying the AllSpark, or at least something just as powerful. When the Autobots escaped and it became clear the ''Nemesis'' was going to crash into an exploding space bridge, Blackarachnia fled in an escape pod. {{storylink|Transform and Roll Out!}}

Later, she stalked [[Bumblebee (Animated)|Bumblebee]], [[Bulkhead (Animated)|Bulkhead]], and [[Sari Sumdac|Sari]] on Halloween night. After she took out Bumblebee and Bulkhead, she started lying to Sari, who, even after her encounter with [[Starscream (Animated)| Starscream]], still couldn't recognize a Decepticon. Fortunately, Optimus came along, but Blackarachnia kidnapped Sari and started web-swinging.

After she got to the top of a skyscraper, Prime tried to fight her, only to realize at last who she was. Blackarachnia tried to use [[Sari Sumdac's Key|Sari's key]] to become fully mechanical. However, the energies unleashed caused any organic life in range, including Sari (and presumably any other [[Human|fleshy]]) to shrivel and sicken. It almost killed Blackarachnia, but Optimus Prime pulled the key out, restoring the organics. Prime tried to reason with "Elita", asking her to come with them in the hopes of curing her, but Blackarachnia stabbed him, saying that it would be a long time before she trusted him again. After she knocked out Prime, she cried her four eyes out. {{storylink|Along Came a Spider}}

Later, she again kidnapped Sari, who was running away after having the key taken away from her. When she heard about the key and how Sari felt totally mistrusted by the Autobots, Blackarachnia played on the girl's sympathies by saying she knew how Sari felt. BA noted how she was not a Decepticon until after the Autobots turned their backs on her, and how the AllSpark's power was the only thing that could cure her current form. Despite being kidnapped again and nearly being killed by BA's previous use of the key, Sari appeared to start seeing eye to eye with her captor. {{storylink|Megatron Rising - Part I}}

At least, that was what she wanted Blackarachnia to believe. Leading her around in circles over the frozen Lake Erie, Sari was finally forced to admit that the [[Autobot ship (Animated)|Autobots' ship]], which contained the AllSpark, was underwater. Blackarachnia's organic half couldn't survive the icy underwater; incensed she prepared to kill Sari. [[Ratchet (Animated)|Ratchet]] brought the ship up through the ice, and Sari bit Blackarachnia's hand, showing that her organic half couldn't withstand teeth, causing her to drop Sari and allow Ratchet to grab her and get in the ship. As Blackarachnia tried to force the door open, the vessel accelerated, and Blackarachnia was thrown off the ship. '''Captain Carmen Fanzone''' is the apparent head of the [[Detroit]] police department. He hates machines, but in an "I'm old" sort of way rather than being evil or anything. However, despite his oft-repeated mantra of "''This'' is why I hate machines/robots" whenever some device in his vicinity goes on the fritz (often with comedic, embarrassing results), he's pragmatic enough to make use of technology when needed. For example, he's a world champion at yelling at subordinates through megaphones for added effect. And firing heavy weaponry at [[Dinobot (Animated)|rampaging robot]]s.

Despite his endless battle with the march of progress and general poor luck, Fanzone is a good cop, dedicated to protecting the people of his city. He's also not a bad guy to have in a brawl. He doesn't ''completely'' trust the [[Autobot]]s, but he's at least assured that they mean well and, like him, are here to protect and serve the city.

Along with machines, he also hates lawyers and kids.

It was the beginning of a bad day when Captain Fanzone got a call for all units to respond to [[Sumdac Systems]] down by Lake Erie. (It was in the middle of his lunch break.) Taking command of the assembled emergency units, Fanzone quickly realized that they were in over their heads fighting a rampaging cybernetic bug-slug, and he ordered all humans to fall back and allow the drones to deal with the creature. When he noticed four cars refusing to fall back, he demanded to know who they were...at which point he realized [[Prowl (Animated)|a cop bike]] had no driver, and his own car was among the group. It got even weirder when it turned out they were [[Transformer|alien robot]]s, but [[Sari Sumdac|some little girl]] managed to talk the cops down from shooting at the invaders.

Several days later, Fanzone, the Mayor, [[Isaac Sumdac]], and [[Bumblebee (Animated)|that robot that looks like his car]] were taken hostage by [[Starscream (Animated)|an evil jet]], but were saved by the aforementioned little girl and the cop bike. As the cop bike took him down, Fanzone declared that this is why he hates machines. Thankless primate. {{storylink|Transform and Roll Out!}}

Fanzone was courted by [[Prometheus Black]], who hoped to use the Captain's mistrust of machines in general and Sumdac products in specific to win his company a contract with the Detroit police department. However, once he saw the berserk rage that [[Colossus Rhodes]] displayed when smashing up the parking lot of an arena, he decided he didn't much like Black's biotechnology either. Not long after, he presided over a demonstration of new Sumdac models which proved to still have a few bugs in the system. Sumdac mentioned that these models had much better recognition systems, thus avoiding the unfortunate incident with the Captain's wife. However, sabotage courtesy of the newly minted supervillain Meltdown ensured that the new robots were still far from ready for prime-time. {{storylink|Total Meltdown}}

When police responded to the rampage of the [[Dinobot (Animated)|Dinobot]]s, Captain Fanzone arrived and asked how bad it was into his megaphone...to an officer who was standing right next to him. The officer pointed at the rampaging robots, as [[Snarl (Animated)|a mechanical triceratops]] sent a car flying through the air, which hit Fanzone's car, crushing it. Captain Fanzone remained completely unmoved, then grabbed a bazooka from a nearby officer and fired at the triceratops...which promptly ate the projectile. Fanzone again proclaimed his dislike of machines. {{storylink|Blast from the Past}}

After [[Nanosec]]'s defeat by the Autobots, Fanzone took the suddenly elderly supervillain into custody. {{storylink|Nanosec (episode)|Nanosec}}

Captain Fanzone accompanied a number of DPD officers to a military base where the [[Decepticons]] [[Blitzwing (Animated)|Blitzwing]] and [[Lugnut]] had been sighted. He was quite miffed to find that the two giant alien robots had apparently vanished into thin air, unaware that the two had adopted [[Earth]] modes and were hiding in plain sight, and with very odd color schemes. {{storylink|Lost and Found (Animated episode)|Lost and Found}}

Captain Fanzone was brought in to lead the investigation regarding Sari Sumdac's disappearance and probable kidnapping. In questioning the Autobots, he was somewhat dubious as to the merits of teaching a little girl "ninja nerve blows." After noticing suspicious behavior from Prowl and Bulkhead, he resolved to follow the two Autobots and pursued them in a (increasingly leaking) submersible. Nature proved almost more hostile to the Captain than technology, ultimately resulting in him getting trapped in quicksand and requiring rescue from the very individuals he was shadowing. Grudgingly going along with them, he uncovered Prometheus Black's plan to genetically alter Sari into a biotechnological shapeshifter. His outrage was brief however as the mad scientist dropped him into a gladiatorial arena and sicced his failed experiments on the Captain and Prowl. Forced to team up to survive, the Autobot earned the Captain's respect and trust as they fought their way out of the research facility. {{storylink|Survival of the Fittest}}

And then that trust was destroyed along with a good portion of Detroit after [[Megatron (Animated)|Megatron]]'s rampage. When an [[Elite Guard's ship|alien ship]] landed in Detroit, Fanzone told the Autobots to stay away, least something worse happen. When it turned out to be the [[Cybertron Elite Guard]], Fanzone was resigned to the fact that the Autobots would have to deal with them. While the Autobots aboard the alien ship, he refused Sari Sumdac's plea to go to their aid. Once [[Optimus Prime (Animated)|Optimus Prime]] stepped out and told them they were Autobots, Fanzone appeared mildly relieved{{m-}}until [[Ultra Magnus (Animated)|a missile carrier]] and [[Sentinel Prime (Animated)|a jerk monster truck]] rolled right after Prime, with the later vehicle denting Fanzone's car. During a press conference with [[Mayor Edsel]] and the monster truck named Sentinel Prime, Fanzone recieved a phone call from what he believed was a woman reporting on Decepticon activity. Heading to old Detroit, Sentinel Prime condescendingly told the humans to stay away. Later, he was on hand to arrest [[Headmaster (Animated)|Henry Masterson]], only [[Porter C. Powell]], the new CEO of Sumdac Systems, to arrive and point out that Masterson had committed no real crimes, as robots weren't protected by law, not to mention that the incident occured on a boat in international waters between the [[United States]] and [[Canada]]. Reluctantly, Fanzone released Masterson. This is why he hates businessmen. {{storylink|The Return of the Headmaster}}

With the prospect of being recalled to Cybertron, the Autobots had the dilemma of who was going to care for Sari after the mean old businessman put her out on the streets. First on their list of grade-A trustworthy humans was Carmen Fanzone. Granted, the list was short and also included Prometheus Black and Nino Sexton. In an effort by the Autobots to get the two humans to bond, Sari discussed with Fanzone the merits of being able to stay up as late as she likes, as well as her need for a very large allowance.

Captain Fanzone breathed a sigh of relief when the Autobots got to stay. Sari said they could still hang out. {{storylink|Mission Accomplished}}

* With his "why can't things be as they were" attitude and dislike for anything new, Fanzone could well be a tongue-in-cheek parody of the most homicidally conservative members of the Transformers [[Fandom|fanbase]]. His surname seems to confirm this{{m-}}heck, it could only be more blatant if his first name was [[Geewun]].
* According to [[Marty Isenberg]], Captain Fanzone was named after Detroit native [[wikipedia:Carmen Fanzone|Carmen Fanzone]], a neighbor of his and a former player for the Chicago Cubs. Due to the relative scarcity of Fanzones in Michigan, the real Fanzone had to sign a waiver before the character could be used.
* Captain Fanzone is so slow to adopt new technology that he has a [[wikipedia:rotary dial|rotary dial]] cell phone...and he even has problems with that.
* His car has been crushed several times, yet it continues to show up to be crushed again.

'''Soundwave''' is one of [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]]'s most reliable troops, and he has positioned himself comfortably and irreplaceably in Megatron's upper command structure. He stands at the [[Decepticon leader]]'s side as a confidant. Though "only" Communications Officer, he is comparable to [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] and [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] in rank and is the only one of the three to display consistent loyalty to Megatron. Soundwave guards his place in the hierarchy fiercely. Other Decepticons (except Megatron) see him as a two-faced snake, since, as Communications Officer, Soundwave hears all and doesn't hesitate to use blackmail to keep himself high in Megatron's esteem. The other Decepticons wouldn't mind abandoning him on the battlefield{{m-}}if they thought Megatron would let them get away with it.

Soundwave commands [[Mini-Cassette|a legion of cassette troops]] to carry out tasks big and small. He has a symbiotic relationship with them, providing them transportation and a cheap, if cramped, place to live in his chest. Sometimes he lets them all out to watch impromptu gladiator games or takes them to discotheques. In return, they perform spy and recon missions for him and make sure no one calls him "unchrasimatic". 

He usually has all the personality of a stump (as evidenced by his computer-style speech). He also has no imagination, sending the aforementioned cassettes on operations with mundane names.

After the Transformers' awakening on Earth, Soundwave served quietly under Megatron before Megatron was overthrown by [[Shockwave]]. When Shockwave was removed from power, Soundwave smoothly transitioned to serving under the new Decepticon leader, Ratbat, and helped to operate his [[Realvision]] playback system to decode data from Autobot tapes [[Grand Slam]] and [[Raindance]]. {{storylink|The Flames of Boltax!}} The tapes, it was discovered, contained information on the [[Underbase]], the power of which was desired by [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] so badly he sparked off a Decepticon-Decepticon war to cover himself. Released by Diamond Select Toys in 2007, Soundwave was sculpted by Mark Wong of Art Asylum and limited to 1,000 pieces. The sculpt features both his concussion blaster gun and shoulder cannon with Laserbeak perched on his left shoulder. His tape deck altmode is sculpted on the base of the bust.

* According to an interview in the magazine ''Otaku USA'' (issue 3, pg. 102-3), the original Microchange toy and the accompanying cassettes were at least partially designed by famed mecha designer and anime director [[Shinji Aramaki]]. He did not come up with the transformation scheme, but designed most of the outward appearance and details. He also worked on the toys that became the deluxe [[Insecticon]]s, [[Reflector]], and [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]].

* Including the ''[[Microchange]]'' "Cassette Man" version, the original Soundwave mold has sported at least four different tape doors:
** The original MC-10 version had a cassette door that had "Cassette Man" emblazoned on it and featured a hinge that was internal to the robot's body.
** For the initial ''Transformers'' release by Hasbro, the "Cassette Man" text was removed.

* Soundwave's distinctive voice proved to be one of G1's most memorable aspects. The highly processed voice began with [[Frank Welker]] basically doing his Dr. Claw voice. Whether due to variations in the performance or the processing, the final result varied quite a bit across Soundwave's three seasons on the show. Occasionally, as in the episodes "[[Roll For It]]" and "[[Webworld]]", the processing was left out and Welker's actual voice can be heard.

* Soundwave has flown in his [[alt mode]] one time, in the episode "[[Masquerade]]".

* The Marvel US comics chose a purple scheme for Soundwave. This could have been an error, an early look for him that was dropped in other media, or perhaps an attempt to distinguish him from the other Decepticons, who were mostly blue (especially since blacks also ended up as blues in the industry's then-limited color palette). He was also sometimes shown without a faceplate. The Marvel UK comics colored him blue like everywhere else (partially due to using a more sophisticated colouring system) and always included his faceplate.

* Soundwave's computer model was used for one of the [[generic]] Transformers in ''Beast Machines''. It is seen in [[Nightscream]]'s flashback being cornered by [[Vehicon]] drones just before Nightscream flees into the lower levels of Cybertron. * Later, Soundwave's character model showed up numerous times in various color schemes as a generic background character in [[Armada (cartoon)|Armada]].

* [[Sideways]] listened to music using a tape deck resembling Soundwave in the [[Cybertron (cartoon)|Cybertron]] cartoon. Later, after a new [[Planet X (Cybertron)|Planet X]] was found, ''Cybertron'' [[Soundwave (Cybertron)|Soundwave]] held tape deck Soundwave in his arms.

* In the Japanese dub of the [[Generation 1 (television series)|Generation 1 cartoon]] as well as the [[manga]], all of Soundwave's cassette forces which could talk referred to him as "big brother". It should probably be noted, though, that this is a fairly common way to refer to others you admire and such in Japanese. It's also a term that gang members use toward older, more experienced members who aren't actual gang bosses. Take it as you will.
