:Action Masters are a subgroup in the Generation 1 continuity family.

Action Masters are Transformers that traded in their ability to transform to become stronger, faster, and more alive. As the Autobot/Decepticon war drained more and more of their resources, a new source of fueling, Nucleon, was discovered which would grant Transformers amazing power, but at a cost. To compensate for their lost ability to transform, the Action Masters built transforming partners and (massive) vehicles to aid them in battle.

A few Action Masters managed to retain (or possibly regain) the ability to transform; they are known as Action Master Elites.

Fiction
Toy packaging blurb
According to the toy packaging Optimus Prime went searching for new energy sources and, within the heart of a black hole discovered Nucleon: a miracle fuel that made Transformers stronger, faster, and more alive, but cost them the ability to transform. Soon the Decepticons stole the technology and created Action Masters of their own.

This story was later referenced with the Japanese release of Nucleon Quest Convoy, a black repaint of Powermaster Optimus Prime who was given the backstory of being Prime specially outfitted for this trip into the black hole.

Marvel Comics continuity
Grimlock heard rumors of a new miracle fuel on the planet Hydrus 4. Against orders he stole the non-functioning bodies of his fellow Dinobots and headed there to find out. What he descovered was a ruined world filled with creepy, obsessive, rotting zombie-like beings warning him that it was all because of Nucleon. Being Grimlock, he then went ahead and used the fuel anyway, first on himself then to revive his fallen teammates.

Grimlock soon found parts of his body inexplicably seizing up, and began to fear that he should have listened to the creepy dying robots after all. After returning to the Ark Grimlock used the Nucleon to repair all the damaged Autobots in the ship's medical bay (as well as Megatron, whom he didn't know was there). Following the Transformers battle with Unicron Grimlock froze-up entirely. It was then that Hi-Q (in the process of merging with Optimus Prime) saw with "Powermaster eyes" that Grimlock wasn't malfunctioning, but changing. He used his Powermaster abillities to speed-up the process and Grimlock burst forth in his new, more-powerful Action Master form.

Meanwhile, HiQ's own mental merger with Prime was also accelerated by his contact with Nucleon. Soon afterward, the Last Autobot re-created HiQ as Optimus Prime, looking very much like his Action Master toy and never being seen to transform. However, while Grimlock explicitly said that his own transformational abilities had been lost, there was no such statement for Prime. So while the involvement of Nucleon and Prime's general appearance suggest that he had become an Action Master too, the uniqueness of his re-creation makes things less certain.

:(Note: Other Action Master toys were represented in the comics, but not having been changed by Nucleon, they are likely not actual Action Masters. Simon Furman has commented that if the comic book had continued we would have seen other Transformers become Action Masters, and we also would have seen a follow up to the hints that Nucleon affects everyone differently, with some Transformers being affected by it in various alternate ways.)

Timelines Classics comic
As in other fiction, neither Grimlock nor Prime kept their Action Master bodies for long. However, Snarl is seen as an Action Master (and his partner Tyrannitron even gets a mention). Given Snarl's hatred of his own dinosaur mode, his remaining an Action Master was likely a matter of taste.

Japanese continuity
Optimus, and Megatron's pre-G2 bodies share a striking similarity to their Action-Master toys. Likewise Optimus Prime has been documented as searching out a New Energy source called Nucleon that's located within a black hole. Finally, Optimus Prime's Actionmaster was sold with New Years Convoy, and described as the intermediate form between Prime's various G2 Bodies.

Fandom reception
:I DEFINITELY like my transformers to transform. Down with the action masters. --Posted to alt.toys.transformers by Josh Freeman Frankel, 02-25-1994

The Action Master toyline, depicting the obvious oxymoron of "Transformers who don't transform," generated initial ire from some fans. This was magnified as Action Masters were released in the final year of the original Transformers toyline in the US. When Transformers was summarily cancelled in North America, some fans blamed the gimmick for the death of the franchise (despite the wide variety of other factors that doubtlessly were involved).

One aspect Action Masters is notable for, however, is the mass reintroduction of "classic" characters. New toys for old characters was not a theme the original toyline visited very often, and so to have a single subline with so many recurring favorites was, at the time, a novelty. In addition, the classic characters were designed to more closely resemble their cartoon counterparts. For much of the Season 1 and 2 cast, the original figures having been designed years before they were stylized and simplified for the cartoon, these Action Masters were the closest likenesses of their fiction representatons ever.

As with many other changes to the Transformers brand, initial hostility towards Action Masters from the fandom eventually became less intense, and diversified into a broad range of opinion. Many of the most in-demand vintage (and therefore expensive) Transformers toys are Action Masters, and new characters from this subgroup are still harkened back to in newer toylines. For example, Axer shows up in the Robots in Disguise toyline, Armada Overload has design elements based on Rollout, and Cybertron Smokescreen's colors are a partial homage to Rad.

199.31.3.195: /* Production */

nav-armadaArmada was the first Transformers cartoon to be co-developed in the United States and Japan. The show was produced in Japan, aired first in the United States, and then aired later in Japan. The cartoon served as a media tie-in for the overall Transformers Armada franchise.

Story setup
Armada is set in a Unicron Trilogy universe, and is the first series in its continuity. Thus, the Armada cartoon was responsible for establishing the animated UT universe. (There are also comic books based on Armada that are set in slightly different UT continuities.)

Armada added to Transformers mythology the notion of Mini-Cons, a tiny (human-sized) race of Transformers that, when "powerlinxed" to their larger brethren, would unleash a floodgate of energy. Because of the great potential for their exploitation, the Mini-Cons attempted to abstain from the Autobot/Decepticon war and fled Cybertron, crashing several of their ships on or near Earth. When some Mini-Cons are accidentally reactivated in 2002 by clumsy teenagers, a beacon alerts both the Autobots and Decepticons on Cybertron, who track them to Earth and continue their battle here.

Production
Armada was plagued with translation errors, particularly the repeated misnaming of characters in dialog, and also wildly varying animation quality. This is due in large part to an extremely rushed production schedule; the ADR studio Voicebox often recieved unfinished animation to work with, and rarely had time to get more than a first-draft translation of the script together in time for recording.

The nature of this rushed-job is still under speculation, but there appear to be two primary suspects. Initial plans called for Dreamwave to supply character models for the series (at least, that was the claim), but that never materialized, possibly throwing production schedules off. Also, it has been mentioned that Cartoon Network, the channel that aired the show, would not sign off on the series without a certain number of episodes already finished, forcing a rush-job to get the cartoon out in a timely manner to coincide with the toyline's release.

Although fans had a mixed reaction towards the product as a whole (which is in reality typical of any new series), it was incredibly successful with the target audience, children ages 4-9. The success of Armada lent to the more expensive R&D that went into the next two toylines, Energon and Cybertron, as well as help launch the Transformers Universe subline. Armada remains a toyline of controversy still to this day.

May 2007
An Easter egg is a special treat hidden in something, (a comic book, a web site, a DVD) as a reward for the person who finds it. Since an Easter egg presumably requires extra effort to find or recognize, it represents a reward for the more 'hardcore' fan.

Example Easter egg: Some of the trashed bodies in the Quintesson jail cell in Transformers: The Movie are recolored robots from the Gundam series, a long-running Japanese robot franchise.

Easter eggs: threat or menace?
Easter eggs are generally enjoyed by most fans... when used with restraint. Dreamwave was notable for its frequent unrestrained use of Easter Eggs; often Japanese logos on Cybertron or obscure toys and background characters.

Unfortunately, the frequent use of such Easter Eggs resulted in some confusion. Is the Empty near the Old Slave Trails (at right) actually Devcon... or did the writer/artist simply throw him in as a fanwank to cause 20-something fans to go OMG! I rcgniz taht 1! and experience near-orgasmic nostalgic delight quite independent of what's actually going on in the story? This could be compared to a "walk-on cameo" by an actor previously associated with the franchise, like if William Shatner appeared in a crowd shot in Star Trek: Enterprise... except in this case Shatner would be dressed like Capitan Kirk, but not intended to be him, which is really more weird than pleasing.

First Encounter, the pilot for the Armada cartoon series, has a scene wherein multiple "lookalikes" of Generation 1 characters appear... but are not supposed to actually be those characters. It is considered by some to be the highlight of an otherwise plain episode.

The problem of intentionality
Possibly the best example of the problem of unrestrained Easter-egging is in Dreamwave's G1 ongoing #3. In a large meeting-hall scene, several Japanese and Generation 2 Transformers are used as crowdfiller. Most of the Transformers in attendance can be assumed to "be" themselves -- but there is a problem with one of the Generation 2 Cyberjets. Specifically, the character this toy represents (Air Raid) is both on Earth and dead at this point in the ongoing story. As it can not be Air Raid, we are left with three choices;

# It is actually Aero Raid, a Japanese character that, despite having one toy (this one) identical to Air Raid's, is a separate character.
# It is a previously unknown robot identical to both Air Raid and Aero Raid.
# None of these robots actually represent any particular character -- they're just throwing in the likeness of obscure characters to thrill readers, they're not actually supposed to be those characters.

Option #2 means that we cannot trust anything we read/watch to tell us anything meaningful about the Universe. The non-speaking robot we assume is Gears in the episode Day of the Machines may in fact be an unrelated identical twin.

Option #3 means that Devcon was not Devcon -- and Gears may not be Gears (after all, the script probably didn't name him by name, he was just added to fill in the background of Autobot Headquarters!) A character is only "there" if they are intended to be there by the writers.

Option #1 means that it was Aero Raid in the crowd, even though the writer/artist almost certainly intended it to be Air Raid. This is an argument against author intention, essentially saying "the story says what it says, and if Bush didn't know what he was saying... well he still said it."

By default, a limited version of Option #1 is used on this Wiki. Easter eggs are treated at face value unless it makes no sense to do so.

Scorponok was a Decepticon commander on Cybertron in 1987, and was a rival of the Autobot Fortress Maximus. He was also the commander of the time-displaced Cyclonus and Scourge. Though quite powerful, he stood only a few heads taller than the average Transformer in size.

When Fortress Maximus and his followers quit the war and left for the planet Nebulos, Scorponok tracked them and lead his troops there, vowing to conquer the new planet. Upon reaching Nebulos, Scorponok manipulated and blackmailed the politician Lord Zarak into working for him and becoming his binary bonded Headmaster partner. This would affect him dramatically, however, and resulted in the alteration of both his and Zarak's personalities.

When Galen decided to leave Nebulos for Earth, Scorponok and his forces again followed, leaving the war-torn Nebulos behind. Shortly after he arrived, his plans were set back when the Autobot Highbrow ripped his head off. The shock left both Scorponok and Zarak out of commission for quite some time while they were separated. Once reactivated, Scorponok found that, due to the fractured Decepticon forces on Earth, he had to vie for command of the Decepticon forces against Ratbat, Shockwave, and Starscream. By the end of the Underbase crisis, however, Shockwave had apparently burned-up on atmospheric re-entry, Starscream had exploded from an energy overload, and Ratbat was dead by Scorponok's hand. His command of the Decepticons was assured.

In 1991, Scorponok made Decepticon history as Optimus Prime formally offered his surrender in hopes of making a new force to combat the Dark God Unicron. Scorponok initially planned to betray Prime's trust to bolster his own leadership position, which was faltering in the wake of Starscream's return; his troops were threatening mutiny, and two even left the ranks. But Prime eventually persuaded him to unite their forces -- just as a contingent of rebel Decepticons under Shockwave's command attacked Scorponok's base.

After a protracted battle which ended with Shockwave knocked out by the human Circuit Breaker, Scorponok agreed to help the Autobots and was brought by Primus to Cybertron to prepare for the ultimate battle.

Scorponok met his fate in this battle as he sacrificed himself to rally his forces against Unicron. In his last few moments, Scorponok realized the nobility of Optimus Prime, and hoped that his sacrifice would redeem him.

Though a Decepticon to the core, Scorponok/Zarak died a hero, defending Cybertron from Unicron, and was called "old friend" by Optimus Prime himself.

Animated continuity
In the animated continuities, Scorponok is as big as Trypticon, Metroplex and Fortress Maximus.

Scorponok was a gigantic Headmaster robot built from scratch by Lord Zarak, the dictator of Nebulos, upon learning of the Transformers. Lord Zarak has full control of the giant, which was built from the Hive's underground city. Scorponok itself did not appear to have a mind of its own, though it did have a different voice than Zarak in robot mode.
(The Japanese Headmasters series diverged from "The Rebirth" greatly, completely ignoring the events of the 3-parter.)

Scorponok was one of a group of Transformers who left Cybertron long ago to escape the Great War and took up residence on the planet Master. Chaffing under the leadership of Fortress Maximus, Scorponok and several Headmaster warriors rebelled and were exiled from the planet, joining up with Galvatron and the Decepticons and joining them in an attack on Cybertron in 2011. Scorponok reluctantly served under Galvatron, but saw his chance to take power when he instigated the destruction of Cybertron, tricking Galvatron into the heart of the explosion, apparently destroying him.

Scorponok subsequently took control of the Decepticons, falsely claiming that Galvatron was alive and commanding him from afar. Enslaving the Beastformers, he had them toil on the planet Zarak within a dark nebula to construct a giant Transtector for him, and activated it in the midst of his attempt to destroy the planet Mars. Arriving on Mars to battle Fortress Maximus, Scorponok redubbed himself "Megazarak" and successfully destroyed the planet, harnessing its plasma energy for his own purposes.

Believing that his deeds had cemented his position of power, Megazarak arrange for a coronation ceremony on Earth's moon so that he could become the new Emperor of Destruction, but in the midst of it, Galvatron returned alive and well and retook leadership. This saw Megazarak relegated to the insulting position of interplanetary bus as the Decepticons travelled from world to world, pillaging energy, with which Galvatron planned to fuse himself with the Earth itself. Galvatron did not get the chance to put this plan into action, though, as Megazarak abandoned him to face the Autobot Headmasters alone in a battle at the North Pole, buring him beneath an iceberg.

Once again, Megazarak was now Emperor of Destruction, and began his assault on Earth, only to be foiled when the Autobots discovered his weak point, behind the Decepticon sigil on his chest. Critically wounded, Megazarak had the Decepticons retreat back to planet Master, where he forged the Zarak Shield out of G Metal to combat the Master Sword. The Autobots pursued the Decepticons to Master, and when the two weapons clashed, the Zarak Shield emerged triumphant, and Megazarak lead the charge back to Earth, intending to sent it the way of Mars. Operating out of the sunken continent of Lemuria, Megazarak raised towers of Crysmag metal all over the Earth, tearing it apart with waves of energy, which he collected in his Transtector and the North Pole. Battling Fortress Maximus, he rigged his transtector to explode and fled the planet, but, bolstered by the energy of his fellow Autobots, Maximus managed to destroy the Transtector before it could destroy the Earth, and the Autobots drove the last of the Decepticon forces from Earth.

Headmasters manga
Following his defeat at the end of the anime, all the Decepticons were driven away from Earth. However, Megazarak managed to leave Soundblaster behind to act as a spy. That didn't last long, as Soundblaster quickly revealed himself to the opposition when he attempted to take the Witwicky family hostage. He was defeated by Chromedome's "Master Chrome Hurricane Throw to the End of Hell".

Masterforce anime
:Voice actor: Banjō Ginga (Japan)<br/>

After his defeat on Earth, Scorponok arranged for the reconstruction of his Transtector in a new, smaller, combiner-sized, more powerful form with hyper-dense armor, but before he could recombine with it, he was captured by the evil alien energy entity Devil Z and brainwashed into his service. Scorponok was subsequently linked to his new Transtector, not as a Headmaster, but wired directly into the chest. With a new head atop his Transtector's shoulders, Scorponok was now Blackzarak, and returned to lead the Decepticon forces in battle against the Autobots in space.

Devil Z, meanwhile, fostered a war on Earth where human beings were merged with Transtectors to become Headmaster Juniors and Godmasters. With the Autobot force increasing in power, Devil Z summoned Blackzarak to Earth, but Fortress Maximus's younger brother, Grand Maximus, made it to the planet ahead of him and warned the Autobots of his coming. In preparation, they constructed Godbomber, who merged with Super Ginrai to form God Ginrai, who could battle Blackzarak in space when he arrived. With Overlord and Grand Maximus thrown into the mix, a showdown on the surface of the moon ensuing, during which Blackzarak was decapitated and fled back into space.

During this extended stay in space, Blackzarak mastered localized gravity manipulation and gained the ability to open black holes, which he used to teleport himself directly to Earth and lead the Decepticons in a series of attacks on major cities. When the Autobots directly attacked the Decepticon base, however, Devil Z merged with Blackzarak, subsisting Scorponok's consciousness, and used his body as a channel for his Devil Power, causing widespread devastation across the planet with its deadly waves. Confronted by God Ginrai in a final battle on the Matterhorn, Blackzarak's body was destroyed through the power of the God Fire Guts, and Devil Z then met his end at God Ginrai's hands.

(Blackzarak is referred to as one of the Nine Great Demon Generals. This terminology, coupled with Violen Jygar's supernatural origins, could mean that Violen Jygar was the one responsible for bringing Black Zarak back to life. Furthermore, it is never revealed whether the resurrected Blackzarak has the consciousness of Scorponok or Devil Z.)

During the reign of the mysterious entity Violen Jygar as Emperor of Destruction, the previously much-dead Blackzarak reappeared as one of the Nine Great Demon Generals and was given the rank of Evil Spirit General. Blackzarak's new appearance seemed to have a serious pirate-vibe going on, with the big guy now having a hook for a hand and an eye-patch.

As a group of Autobot Micromasters chased after the Decepticons who had stolen Planet Zone's precious Energon Z, Blackzarak suddenly appeared in the darkness of space. The Demon-General successfully attacked the Micromasters, on board Countdown's rocket, and managed to trap them in a cocoon of powerful webbing. Blackzarak then disappeared into darkness once more.

Dreamwave comics continuity
Shortly before the Great Shutdown, Scorponok attended a teleconference with Ratbat and Shockwave, where he criticized the latter for 'thinking like a calculator instead of a warrior'. Destined For Nothing

IDW comics continuity
On the planet Nebulos, Scorponok was in league with Mo Zarak, head of the Cranium, a cabal of really smart scientists. Presumably with input from Scorponok, the Cranium had created hybrid Nebulan/Cybertronian beings. Unfortunately for Scorponok, Ultra Magnus has tracked him down. In the ensuing battle, Scorponok accidentally shot Zarak (revealing to Magnus that the Nebulan had also been infused with Cybertronian technology), and Magnus shot Scorponok in the head. Scorponok escaped; his current whereabouts are officially unknown but certain aspects of Spotlight: Ultra Magnus point to Scorponok possibly being the mysterious figure currently puppetering the Machination.
