Jolt, Dune Runner, and Rollbar are on a survival exercise in Death Valley, looking for a town "that doesn't exist on any map", running only on their reserve power. Both Jolt and Dune Runner aren't too happy with the area, with Dune Runner noting that there's something wrong about it. Possibly it's the ravenous decomposing horror that's spotted them and roars that it needs parts...

An irritated Rollbar tells them it's a survival exercise, it's meant to be hard: they need to stop acting like the raw cadets they are and start acting like proper Autobots. Dune Runner is having none of it, pointing out they're going to be cadets for a long time: they all arrived on Earth after the great battle against The Fallen, and Ironhide's crew can handle the mopping up of the remaining Decepticons. But while he thinks they're surplus to requirements, Rollbar is determined that they're going to prove themselves to be Autobots anyway! While Dune Runner is dismissive of Rollbar's enthusiasm and their chances of finding their objective, the truck knows where to go: he did some research before coming, and leads the other three to an old, abandoned mining town. (The decomposing fiend follows...)

Their task now is to find the emergency recharge pack in town before their reserves give out. (Dune Runner will be glad to get it and leave this creepy place!) Jolt swiftly finds the pack, happily noting that he can find any power source... but the undead monster finds him as well! One horrified scream later and the monster makes his way towards the other cadets, tearing into Dune Runner. Rollbar finds Jolt, his left arm torn off at the shoulder, but the wounded 'bot orders his comrade to go help Dune Runner instead. As the monster tears an arm off the other cadet, screaming about a need to rebuild, Rollbar whallops him so hard the creature's neck bends back...

And then he hits Rollbar flying! His rotting arm has shattered in the process, so he plugs Dune Runner's severed arm into its place. But he needs more, and Jolt knows that, with them running on empty, they've only got one chance against this rotting fiend... and so he uses every bit of energy in the recharge pack to charge up his electro-whips and finally puts the monster down! The battle done, Dune Runner wants to put the creature down; Rollbar disagrees, saying they're going to act like Autobots. Instead of killing him, they're going to take him back to Diego Garcia.

Two days later, Ratchet calls the cadets in with answers. It turns out the half-dead Decepticon is called Dead End, and the Decepticons built him with an experimental regeneration circuit that should have repaired combat damage automatically. Instead, it drove Dead End mad and ate away at his molecular cohesion; with his core programming running, he was driven to desperate extremes to keep himself together. By getting Dead End to Ratchet, the cadets saved his life and showed their commitment to being Autobots. In Ratchet's book, they've got what it takes!

Quotes
"So what you saying, Dune Runner? We should just give up? Not me. Uh-uh. We show them what we can do. And keep showin' 'em!"

"We should put it out of its misery."<br>
"No, we shouldn't. Cadets or not, we're Autobots — let's start acting like ones."

Errors
* It's presented like Jolt was also a dude who came to Earth after the second film. Now, we know he didn't have many scenes but c'mon, guys...
* That's not a Decepticon Ironhide and Sideswipe are 'cleaning up', it's Hoist! (This could be a twisted G1 homage rather than meant to be the movie-verse Hoist)

Notes
* On the Transformers Comic Facebook page, a solicit for the issue says that Dead End was cast out by Megatron after he was released from stasis on the Nemesis and it was clear he'd gone wrong. This is never stated in the issue itself, but is pretty implicit since he's wondering around on his lonesome, muttering as he dies that he "MUST... OBEY... MUH-MEG...". (Bizarrely, the solicit says the story takes place in Alaska and that Depthcharge is in it...)
** This indicates Megs is experimenting on the hatchlings.

* The war on Earth is explicitly stated to be considered over, reduced to a clean-up operation.
* Dead End is based on his Deluxe class toy, and is given a fearsome set of fangs that his toy doesn't have. When Ratchet saves him, his face turns into the toy's mouth.
* When Dead End attaches spare parts to himself, they change colour to match his other parts.
* Ratchet looks disturbingly happy when talking about the regeneration unit that almost killed poor Dead End!
"Look, I'm not defecting to the Autobots. I mean, it would be nice to hang out with other 'bots who transform into cars, but I just can't!"

"I like this [Decepticon jack o'lantern] because two days after this photo was taken, the whole thing probably rotted and collapsed. Quite a fitting visual metaphor for the Decepticons, huh?"<br>
"I prefer to think of it as a shining beacon of artistic talent and human ingenuity, from a loyal supporter of the Decepticon cause."
"SAGITTARIUS (22 NOV - 21 DEC): The sun has put a smile on your face. That's because Megatron has used a giant magnifying glass to burn one on."

"AQUARIUS (20 JAN - 18 FEB): The only way you'll walk in Megatron's shoes is when he stomps on you and you end up like toe jam between his claws."

"TAURUS (20 APR - 20 MAY): Wow. It turns out you're a Decepticon, not an Autobot. That would explain all the dreams you have about conquering helpless planets and then you wake up crying."
* We get the oversized card covers with cutaway gifts again. The price goes up to £2.75.
* A ten year old mailed in his own Superion!
* This is the first time the magazine cover hasn't featured a character who appeared in the latest film. Props to Dead End for breaking the glass ceiling there!
Their war.

Synopsis
Bumblebee narrates as he travels through space in protoform mode. He attempts to find the All Spark before the Decepticons do. He explains that the All Spark is responsible for all life on Cybertron and that it was basically worshiped for eons. Peace flourished under the rule of Optimus Prime and Lord High Protector Megatron. Eventually though, Megatron secretly assembled an army to help him possess the All Spark for himself. He started a global war and many died. The once peaceful Tyger Pax was now a war-ravaged wasteland. The All Spark was moved to Tyger Pax in secret but Megatron soon learned of its location.

Bumblebee's mission was to delay Megatron while others made preparations. His unit of six, including Arcee and Inferno, was under fierce attack while Optimus Prime's forces held off Megatron's main forces at Simfur. Megatron arrived and the tide turned against the Autobots. Bumblebee led the survivors into a building and planned to lead the Decepticons in and sacrifice the remaining Autobots to take out as many Decepticons as possible. They take out the roof supports and it collapses, but the Decepticons survive. They torture the remaining Autobots to find out the All Spark's location.

Megatron arrives and Swindle apologizes for not extracting the information. Megatron sends him away and questions Bumblebee, who tells him nothing. He breaks off Bumblebee's arm and throws him across the room. Before Megatron can do more, he hears the rumbling of the All Spark being shot into space. Before he can transform into jet mode and follow though, Bumblebee trips him, allowing the All Spark to speed away. Megatron crushes Bumblebee's voice capacitor and transforms to follow the All Spark.

The other Autobots soon arrive and repair Bumblebee's arm, but his voice capacitor is beyond repair. He learns to communicate in other ways and alerts the others to Megatron's actions. When it's decided to also travel into space to find the All Spark before Megatron, Bumblebee is the first to volunteer. He laments that the war is spreading to other worlds.
Errors
* Bumblebee's voice capacitor is said to be damaged beyond repair, yet later in the movie, it is repaired by Ratchet. Were they lying or exaggerating? New technology?
* Also, it was called a "vocal processor" in the movie by Ratchet, not a "voice capacitor".

Items of note
* This issue was originally scheduled for a February 21st, 2007 release; however, there were several problems which delayed its release:
*Initially, artist Don Figueroa had drawn pre-Earth Bumblebee in a design more closely based on an unused Earth mode concept art. However, Hasbro demanded that Bumblebee's Cybertronian form was to look more like the "Protoforms" seen in the movie (the Autobots' robot forms after emerging from their interstellar travel pod modes, before scanning Earth-based alternate modes) and the "Protoform" Optimus Prime toy, so Figueroa had to devise a new pre-Earth design for Bumblebee and redraw all panels from the issue depicting Bumblebee to reflect the new design.
* Furthermore, the initial printing run of this issue featured a printing error, with the text captions from page 2 repeated on page 5. Because of this, the release of this issue was officially pushed back to March 7th; however, some stores still received a shipment of the error-ridden version of the issue on its originally intended release date, February 21st. IDW then shipped out the corrected version to stores and recalled the error version, even asking retailers to replace their customers' already-purchased "error" versions with the corrected ones at IDW's expense.
* This issue was also available as a "black and white" edition, with both regular cover variants (also in black and white). Instead of simply featuring Don Figueroa's uncolored inks, however, the already colored pages were grey-scaled.
* Inferno is only accidentally in this comic: Don repurposed Ratchet's original design as a generic and decided to name him "Inferno" in private... and then, a year later, there was an Inferno toy!
* The first few pages of this issue were also released as part of Free Comic Book Day on May 5th, 2007.
* Prime Directive was reprinted in Titan's Transformers comic, with the original strips in the first two issues set directly set around this issue. Prelude Optimus Prime showed Prime launching the All Spark while Bumblebee was carrying out this story (with a brief panel showing 'bee and his boys); Prelude Megatron opened with Megatron watching the All Spark launch as he tortured Bumblebee. Unfortunately, the panels tying in to Prime Directive did not quite match what happened in this issue.
* Ratchet was also absent from Cybertron for a length of time in the Titan strips, which means it took the Autobots yonks to get round to recovering the wounded Bumblebee!
* The backstory of Optimus and Megatron as co-leaders on Cybertron would got contradicted somewhat by the later Defiance, where Optimus appeared to be a subordinate to Megatron.
As the Cybertronians search for the secrets of their past, an ancient threat rises...
Synopsis
Commander Starscream returns to Cybertron after a patrol of the Eshems Nebula and is met by First Officer Ratchet. Starscream is sporting a wound from an encounter with a scout ship, the fourth one he's spotted so far. As Ratchet works on him, they chat about the science sector's latest archeological dig. With repairs complete, Starscream meets up with his captain, Ironhide, and the two go to meet "the boss". Meanwhile, Optimus is filling in Megatron on the dig's progress and recent unusual energy pulses being emitted by the Allspark. Starscream and Ironhide interrupt, however, and Megatron has them report on the defense record of the past solar cycle.

In the Eshems Nebula, an alien fleet awaits, attracted by a mysterious signal. The aliens decide that they should launch an attack and try to claim the energy source.

In Simfur, Bumblebee and Cliffjumper are standing guard over the Allspark. Bumblebee complains that Optimus is running off on a dig when he should be investigating the Allspark energy spikes. Cliffjumper tells him to calm down and points out Bumblebee is just complaining because he'd rather be out fighting someone. Cliffjumper tells him the two of them are able for anything and are already Defense Force material, but that they'd be just as bored with the Defense Force, going on nothing but patrols.

Above Cybertron, the aliens ready for their attack.

At the dig site, Arcee's team finds something, and she rushes off to tell Optimus. Observing with Ratchet and Jazz, Optimus is considering whether or not the artifacts they keep finding might actually predate their race. His thoughts are interrupted as Megatron arrives and asks Optimus what he thinks the site contains. Optimus isn't ready to give any definite answers, and the pair quickly start arguing over procedure, culminating in Megatron telling Optimus that when he chooses to lead, he can make the decisions, not before. They're interrupted by Arcee, who tells them of her team's discovery, an intact artifact bearing an unknown marking. Following her to the site, they find a large, triangular slab bearing a strange symbol. Megatron wants the artifact removed at once, but Optimus says that they need time. Before the argument can kick off again, an explosion goes off in the nearby city of Metrotitan. Starscream calls in, confirming it to be an attack by the same species he encountered before. Megatron prepares for battle, but Optimus wants to have his division follow the same procedures as before: They will guard the site and the Simfur Temple, while the Defense Force fights directly. Megatron accepts this, but orders the artifact transported to his quarters in Trypticon.

In the Simfur Temple, Bumblebee and Cliffjumper are pinned down and desperate for help. It arrives in the form of Megatron coming through the city. He is disgusted that they haven't taken the fight to the enemy, but takes a serious wound while berating them. He quickly destroys his attacker, and as Starscream arrives, orders him to continue the battle and to keep Optimus' team out of their way.

Megatron returns to Trypticon, drawn to the artifact, feeling as if it calls out to him. He begins to scrape the dirt away from it, but his injury overwhelms him and he collapses. As he lies there, the artifact moves ever so slightly closer...

Beachcomber never wanted to go to war. He was perfectly happy trekking through the wilderness on remote planets. Unfortunately, like most other Cybertronians, he's found himself drawn into the conflict, and now he has to deal with Deadlift.

:Beachcomber is a blue and gray redeco of Dune Runner, an homage to the original Beachcomber. Like Dune Runner, his vehicle mode is based on the Sector Seven dune buggies seen in the first film. The twin gatling guns mounted on his roof/shoulders have multi-jointed armatures for different firing positions.

:A Walmart exclusive, Beachcomber comes packaged versus Deadlift. This package is included in the N.E.S.T. Global Alliance promotion.

:This mold was also used to make 2010 Transformers Crankstart.
