Synopsis
On the metal-and-steel planet of Cybertron, a single flower bizarrely grows out of a tear in the street. Suddenly, a munky races past, pursued by a horde of Tank Drones. In an even stranger vein, Primal has lost his Transmetal properties and is now in his original furry body. After a couple minutes of cat-and-mouse, Optimus decides to face them down and prepares to Maximize. But his beast-mode parts refuse to move and he screams in pain as he is tortured by electrical shocks.

Suddenly, his eyes glow and he receives a strange signal from an alien source. He sees a monorail vehicle nearby and swings away from the drones, and finds another one of his missing comrades &mdash; Rattrap. Rattrap explains that he has had a lot of trouble transforming as well and has no memory of returning to Cybertron after the end of the Beast Wars and the capture of Megatron. They escape from the transport after the drones blow it to pieces and Rattrap tries to use his command code repeatedly, resulting in nothing but shocks and pain.

Fortunately, Cheetor leaps out of nowhere, covering the eyes of one of the drones. Its head spins wildly, and it takes pot shots, destroying one of its counterparts. Cheetor is hoping to find a CR chamber and use it to eliminate the transformation lock virus that plagues them all. Rattrap points out that Cybertron seems to have changed a lot in their absence. But there is no time to discuss matters, as new tank drones are readying a renewed assault. Plunging into a hole, the Maximals bounce on a web. It is Blackarachnia, the Predacon-turned-Maximal, unable to convert and stuck in her organic body.

Primal decides that the best course of action is to head deeper underground, where the Vehicon drones have failed to look. Using the webs of Blackarachnia, they head deeper into the bowels of Cybertron, passing layers and layers of cities as they descend. Brushed metal and steel give way to rusting iron, which gives way to stone. Eventually, too weak to climb, they fall, plunging into complete darkness. Determined not to die, Primal throws a piece of scrap metal, shattering some kind of covering and awakening the supercomputer called the Oracle. A wall of flames springs up. Undaunted by the seeming threat, Optimus walks straight through them, revealing the hologram. The Oracle speaks to Primal, taking him into the bowels of the Matrix.

Granted visions that he could not yet understand, he sees images of an Earth-like planet transformed into a purely mechanical world. Concluding with the mysterious statement that "the seeds of the future lie buried in the past", the Oracle declares that it is time for him to begin his "reformatting", tapping the power of the Matrix and converting his purely organic gorilla body into a perfect blend of organic tissue and mechanical parts. Stepping back into real-space in a wash of light, the other three Maximals admire his new body. Primal says that they must be "reformatted" as well, and one by one, Cheetor, Rattrap and Blackarachnia exit the Oracle, in new, technorganic bodies.

Suddenly, the Oracle winks out of existence, and a hum fills the cave. This is another squadron of Vehicons, but instead of tanks, they are motorcycles. Lining up, Primal orders the Maximals to Maximize. Although no pain ensues, nothing happens. Optimus realizes they must learn how to transform as it has somehow become a lost art after the first Transformers "came" to Cybertron. Realizing this, the Maximals resign to combat in their strange new beast modes. Rattrap attacks a Cycle Drone's wheel with his teeth, Cheetor pounces on a motorcycle, and Blackarachnia uses her webs to snare another. Primal is shot, and plunges into a pit. Panicking, a voice from the Oracle reminds him that "he must tame the beast without to release the warrior within".

Finding his inner balance, he manages to transform. A blue light spreads throughout his body, converting it to robot mode through a liquid-morph style transformation. Activating his jets, he flies out from certain doom. Grabbing the nearest Drone, he demands answers, but gets none as they escape. His anger has made him lose his center, and he converts back to beast mode. Awed, Cheetor expresses his interest in this new transformation style. Optimus declares that they must re-learn the art of transformation and their new style of combat.

Meanwhile, a mysterious figure watches the battle in the citadel and vows to destroy the "impure" organic Maximals. It's Megatron, now the supreme ruler of Cybertron!
:—The post-mortem on Optimus' transformation.

Notes
* A special advance screening of this episode was held at 1999, where it received an overwhelmingly positive reaction.

Continuity errors
* Although the Maximals' original beast modes from Beast Wars are shown in this episode, there are some rather strange inconsistencies here. Optimus' fur is brown instead of grey, Rattrap's feet are dark orange instead of pink, Blackarachnia's skin is a lighter shade of blue and smoother, and Cheetor has black eyes with two black streaks running down his face.
* While an easy mistake, Optimus cannot have regressed to his organic (non-transmetal) beast mode. Optimus' organic body was destroyed during the Planet Buster crisis and with it the DNA sequence of the gorilla he scanned in the first episode of Beast Wars. So technically Optimus should have returned to his Transmetal body. Anyone who additionally attempts to factor in the effects of Optimus Prime's spark and its similarity or dissimilarity to a normal Transmetal upgrade or what permanent effects it would logically have had's head might explode.

Transformers references
* It was from this episode that the term "reformatting" passed into general use amongst Transformerdom.
* Optimus says that the first Transformers had to learn to transform before it became second nature to the robotic races... this is possibly a reference to several flashback sequences in the original cartoon series which mentioned how Autobots had to learn to change their shape to overcome their enemies.

Real-world references
*Rattrap says, "Ground Control to Major Optimus," which is a reference to the 1969 David Bowie song "Space Oddity."
*During Optimus Primal's visions, a group of black monoliths are briefly seen, a nod to the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
The end of the Underbase Saga... and the Transformers?

Synopsis
Out in the vacuum of space, the Underbase travels ever closer to Earth...

On that planet, the Aerialbots are the first to respond to the alert beacon triggered by Buster Witwicky. Seeing the responsible party, they quickly radio back to the Ark and Fortress Maximus. A full Autobot response battalion arrives within a matter of minutes. Spike is reunited with his brother only to find him on the brink of death. He places Buster within a heating unit in Fortress Maximus's chest to fight off the effects of exposure and frostbite. As the Autobots gather their wits enough to question the situation at hand, though, they are treated to a full scale Decepticon attack, as Ratbat and Scorponok have detected their approach.

The following battle is quick and merciless, and comes to a stop only when Ratbat ends up confronting Fortress Maximus and his own former prisoner, Buster. Buster outlays what Starscream told him before departing, and makes Ratbat see reason about putting his feud with the Autobots on hold until the larger issue can be dealt with. The various faction leaders agree to work together and make a space-worthy craft to hunt down Starscream.

At the edge of space, the most treacherous Decepticon of all leaves his star cruiser to bathe directly in the light of the Underbase's powerful knowledge and knowledgeable power. Before he absorbs much, however, he is blasted out of the way by Optimus Prime, manning the guns on the island starship. Unfortunately, that momentary exposure was enough to supercharge Starscream, and he manages to grab hold of the entire star cruiser he stole and toss it straight through the island ship, leaving the combined armies crippled and stranded in space, and the Decepticons in particular without any means of star travel from then on.

For some reason, Starscream chooses to let them live drifting in the vacuum of space. He also chooses to return to Earth and attack it instead of chasing down the Underbase to fulfill his lust for power. He also announces in advance the exact set of cities he plans to assault. Clearly, the "knowledge" part of the Underbase takes awhile to set in.

Optimus Prime enacts Plan B and summons the Ark to pick them all up and speed back to Earth ahead of Starscream. As the factions begin splitting into teams to cover Starscream's previously identified destinations, Optimus makes the stunning announcement that he will stay aboard the Ark and not confront Starscream. The Decepticons quickly dismiss this as pure cowardice, and leave for Earth in disgust.

Autobots and Decepticons alike confront Starscream one after another and in groups, but ultimately he slaughters them all. The only difficulties he runs into are the Pretenders and those who are binary-bonded, as the organic outer shells and bonding prove somehow resistant to his destructive energies. As the battles continue, both Ratbat and Scorponok become suspicious that Prime's alleged cowardice might actually be greed to capture the Underbase for himself, and abandon their respective battles to return to the Ark and confront him.

Aboard the Ark, Optimus Prime and Hi-Q are guarding Buster Witwicky, while constructing a rocket with reflective panels, designed to catch the Underbase and change its course. Buster makes the mistake of radioing his brother during the battle, though, and Starscream realizes the potential threat an absent Optimus Prime poses to him. He takes off for space to intercept the Autobot leader and the Ark. Ratbat and Scorponok get there ahead of him, however, and confront Prime. After Scorponok blasts Prime and annihilates Ratbat, he heads off to reach the redirected Underbase on his own. Optimus manages to replace his Powermaster engine in time to go after Scorponok, and physically drags the two of them out of the Underbase's path, so that it strikes Starscream instead. The combined power of the Underbase mutates Starscream until he is overwhelmed with power, and is obliterated.

In the aftermath, Optimus Prime explains to Scorponok that he learned his lesson about the Underbase millions of years ago. He arranged for the reflector rocket and for Buster's "ill-timed" radio message to Fortress Maximus in order to lure Starscream back out into space, where he would surely try to take all of the Underbase's power and destroy himself. The Cybertronian leaders part in peace, but Scorponok makes it clear that the war will begin anew, tomorrow...
Errors
* Ratbat and Scorponok figure out that Starscream stole the spacecraft to go after the Underbase... and then Buster inexplicably needs to explain it to Ratbat all over again a few pages later. (The only new information Buster gives him is that Starscream arranged for the Autobots to show up.)
* Not technically an error, but the background shot of Prowl under attack from Scorponok is copied right from "Totaled!".
* So is the entire sequence of Cerebros and Spike transforming out of their respective head modes.
* In said sequence, Cerebros' name is misspelled as "Cerebro".
* Another repeat from "Totaled": Fortress Maximus's Autobots are completely absent from the first half of the issue, most notably from the Autobot-Decepticon battle.
* On page 11, panel 2 Fortress Maximus has only 3 fingers on his left hand. Ratbat COULD have POSSIBLY eaten it off panel...MAYBE.

Items of note
* Part 4 of the Underbase Saga.
* This issue is double-length in honor of its milestone issue number. Accordingly, it also cost 50 cents more than a standard issue.
* It features the biggest battle toll of any issue, including the battle with Unicron. Among the confirmed casualties are the Aerialbots, Hound, Bluestreak, Mirage, Hoist, Brawn, Gears, Goldbug, Jazz, the Seacons, Jetfire, Blaster, the Throttlebots, Thundercracker, Skywarp, the Dinobots, the Predacons, Laserbeak, Buzzsaw, Octane, Astrotrain, Blitzwing, the Technobots, the Terrorcons, Omega Supreme, Ratbat and, of course, Starscream.
* Bob Budiansky's reasoning for the mass murder was that he needed a big end for the story, he had too many characters, and Hasbro wouldn't care about characters that didn't have toys for sale. And hey, they weren't getting any panel-time these days anyway, "so they were already just about dead".
* Many people also assume that the rest of the earlier armies, those not possessing organic enhancements like Headmasters and Pretenders (save the ever "lucky" Ratchet), were also wiped out behind the scenes. Though unconfirmed, there's something to be said for this theory. Many Transformers like the Protectobots, Insecticons, and Combaticons are never seen again (within the course of the G1 series, though Protectobot First Aid is mentioned as being deactivated during the UK story "The Greatest Gift of All!"). Later issues show Prime mourning the loss of warriors not seen killed in the Underbase Saga, like Perceptor and Powerglide, while rough estimates made in later issues of the number of Autobots or Decepticons active on Earth would not allow for the survival of so many behind-the-scenes soldiers. Still, it remains a point for debate.
* Prime refers to the casualties as "destroyed", but later issues make it clear that at least some of them could be repaired. The Dinobots, Jazz, Goldbug, Blaster and Silverbolt are all revived later in the series. Ratchet is also seen working to restore Omega Supreme. The task of repairing them all will have consequences very shortly.
* Starscream's actions would inevitably haunt the Decepticons for some time when reborn. Several Decepticons would actually desert because Starscream was among them.
* With Ratbat's demise, Scorponok is now in charge of all the Decepticons of Earth. Since most of them were wiped out in this issue, that's probably not much of a promotion.
* Soundwave is explicitly blasted by Starscream, but survives unscathed. This is never explained, other than Soundwave is BADASS! Additionally, the next issue shows Seaspray among the survivors, though by the time Greatest Gift saw print, he was deactivated.
* This is clearly Slingshot's worst day ever. He gets left behind by his fellow Aerialbots when they go pick up Buster, is ionically-disrupted by Astrotrain, transforms into jet mode only to get strafed by a Decepticon flying patrol, and finally is atomized battling Starscream. Some people just can't catch a break.
* The Seacons got axed 3 issues after their debut appearance (though Marvel UK had them appearing sooner). Even Nemesis Breaker lasted longer than that.
* Optimus Prime returns to the US cover corner box, although it's his original form as it appeared on the first 29 issues. This image of Prime will remain in the corner box for the next 25 issues.

Among the confirmed casualties are Jetfire, the Aerialbots, Hound, Bluestreak, Mirage, Hoist, Brawn, Gears, Goldbug, Jazz, the Seacons, Blaster, the Throttlebots, Thundercracker, Skywarp, the Dinobots, the Predacons, Laserbeak, Buzzsaw, Octane, Astrotrain, Blitzwing, the Technobots, the Terrorcons, Omega Supreme, Ratbat and, of course, Starscream.

In Bloenfontein, South Africa, most people are paying attention to the final of the 2010 World Cup at Free State Stadium. But at the local NEST maximum security holding facility for captured Decepticons, Bludgeon is paying attention to getting out. Brakedown is paying attention to needling the dangerous killing machine, mocking him for being beaten by a cadet and mocking the idea he let himself get caught. Bludgeon, however, releases Scalpel from a hidden compartment to slice through his locks, and points out that there's nowhere better to recruit a Decepticon splinter faction than a jail full of angry, murderous mechs...

As Bludgeon is set loose, declares war on humanity, and begins to spring his fellow prisoners, NEST calls in the Autobots Wideload, Smokescreen and Brawn, who are on post. While they're en route, the liberated Brakedown hurriedly tries to apologise to Bludgeon... only to find out he was let go so he could be murdered, as an example to any other dissenters!

The Autobots take up positions: Brawn warns things will get ugly, while Smokescreen realises the Decepticons will be disabling the clamps that restrict their weaponry and alt modes. The group of five Decepticons breals through the walls and Wideload is immediately sent flying towards the stadium. With back-up ten minutes away, Brawn orders Smokescreen to take cover behind him, as he can take more punishm- wait, no, he takes damage too and Smokescreen is smashed backwards into the stadium by an irate Lockdown. Brawn tries futilely to stop Bludgeon but to no avail, about to get killed... when Bumblebee, Springer and Gears arrive to save him!

But that done, they inform him that Optimus has ordered them to allow the Decepticons to leave: there are too many civilians around. Brawn protests, pointing out the human media will just see them letting the enemy go, whatever their reasons, but Gears tells him that they have no choice. Their pride is not worth more than human lives.

Quotes
"Time I was getting out of here."
:—Bludgeon

"Imagine for a moment that you wished to build your own splinter group of Decepticons. Where better to start a recruitment drive... than in a holding pen full to bursting with embittered captives?"
:—Bludgeon

"You're.... going... back... to... your.... nice... warm... cells..."<br>
"I think not."
:—Brawn pushes through Bludgeon's cannonfire

"Whatever our reasons, it'll look like we lost. Or worse... that we were scared."<br>
"I know. But when it comes to saving lives we have to shelve our pride. Sometimes, Brawn, the hardest thing of all... is doing nothing."
:—Brawn and Gears

Errors
* The shot of the Decepticon gang is... confusing, as Reverb is the wrong colour and Bludgeon's line is given to an identical but differently coloured tank. Who that tank should be is not clear; it could be Tankor but the colour is wrong there too.

* Lockdown is gold with blue car parts, which makes it initially tricky to tell it's him.

* We never see Optimus play football like the cover promises! :(

Notes
* Having Decepticon prisoners online is odd, but seen before. The former was even seen in a story where a Bludgeon escaped!
** Similarly, G1 Bludgeon has also become a Decepticon leader.

* Bludgeon's gang includes Reverb, Lockdown, a purple plane (Skywarp?), and a grey-and-purple tank.

* Scalpel was blasted to scrap in the official movie adaptations Revenge of the Fallen (novel) Revenge of the Fallen issue 2, but his death wasn't in the film itself. So he's alive here! Yay!

* South Africa is established as a NEST member-state.

* Furman's Nefarious issue 2 also introduced Brakedown, only to kill him. Guess no one likes Brakedown!

* Smokescreen is shown as being alive and not dead, not the first time Titan's clashed with IDW's 'official' Movie comics.

Contents
Law and Disorder
"I wasn't 'destroyed' in the first film, merely inconvenienced. So there! Anyone who says different sucks coolant."<br>
:—Barricade

"What is it with you people and Unicron? He's the destroyer of worlds, the infinite darkness, he ushers in the end times, I tell you. THE END! And you want to see him in a movie, as a piece of sideshow entertainment? I despair, I really do."<br>
"Hmmmm, I think I'm going to have to agree with 'Cade on this one ... Unicron is the dark lord of the TRANSFORMERS; he's like Simon Cowell, George Bush and a Tyrannosaurus Rex, all rolled into one...
:—Barricade and Ironhide paint a grim picture

"Devastator can be anything from six, seven or even nine seperate 'bots! However, I blame those pitiful minions, White (Editor) and Patrick (Deputy), for this oversight, and have reduced their beer rations accordingly."
:—Barricade

"Is there going to be a third TRANSFORMERS movie?"<br>
"Gemma, there is a thing called the internet. If you use it, and perhaps a search engine.."
:—A teenaged fan and Barricade

Starscream's Stars
"CANCER (22 JUN - 22 JUL): The Stars have promised that your special someone is just around the corner. Well that's great but which one? Can't the Stars give you a reference from the A-Z, just so you know where to be at the right time? And what time should you be there anyway? The Stars aren't actually being of any help."

"VIRGO (23 AUG - 22 SEPT): Oh, now the Stars are moaning because they're saying you don't appreciate their help."

"LIBRA (23 SEPT - 23 OCT): You have defriended the Stars from Facebook."

"SCORPONOK (24 OCT - 21 NOV): The Stars have deleted your number from their mobile."

"PISCES (19 FEB - 20 MAR): Run into the Stars at McDonalds. It all gets a bit awkward but there are apologies and hugs. Stars give you their mobile number again."

Errors
* Contents page forgets to mention The Beautiful Game quiz.
* Ironhide capitalises the "r" in rex.

Notes
* The comic blatantly ties into the contemporary 2010 World Cup. That starts in June rather than May though, so #13 is a bit early. This story was originally meant to be in #14, the June issue.
* Barricade and Ironhide cover both the number of Decepticons in Devastator (however many Dev wants), whether the three Arcee robots are sisters (they're not), and who the Buffalo MPV Decepticon was (Ironhide isn't sure but says he's just a Bonecrusher imposter). Those guys like it tough!
* Ironhide also mentions a new, never seen character, Sideswipe's brother Sunstreaker
* The comic got so many entries for the Build A Bot competition that it's still printing some of the honourable mentions!
* This is the first time Starscream's Stars told a narrative.

"Time I was getting out of here."

"Imagine for a moment that you wished to build your own splinter group of Decepticons. Where better to start a recruitment drive... than in a holding pen full to bursting with embittered captives?"
:—Bludgeon

"Whatever our reasons, it'll look like we lost. Or worse... that we were scared."<br>
"I know. But when it comes to saving lives we have to shelve our pride. Sometimes, Brawn, the hardest thing of all... is doing nothing."

It was even seen in a story where a Bludgeon escaped!
** Similarly, G1 Bludgeon has also become a Decepticon leader.

* Scalpel was blasted to scrap in the official movie adaptations Revenge of the Fallen (novel) Revenge of the Fallen issue 2, but his death wasn't in the film itself. So he's alive here! Yay!
"Hmmmm, I think I'm going to have to agree with 'Cade on this one ... Unicron is the dark lord of the TRANSFORMERS; he's like Simon Cowell, George Bush and a Tyrannosaurus Rex, all rolled into one...
"Devastator can be anything from six, seven or even nine seperate 'bots! However, I blame those pitiful minions, White (Editor) and Patrick (Deputy), for this oversight, and have reduced their beer rations accordingly."

* The comic got so many entries for the Build A Bot competition that it's still printing some of the honourable mentions!
* This is the first time Starscream's Stars told a narrative.
The former miner-turned-gladiator-turned-rebel leader kills lots of other guys for the hell of it.

Synopsis
Autobot security escorts Starscream away from the other detained gladiators held in the Kaon holding cells. They take Starscream to stand before the Council of the district, to whom Starscream delivers a message: Everything that has happened is the council's fault. As punishment for their sins, Starscream and Soundwave destroy the council, etching their symbol into the meeting room's view screen.

The next stage in Megatron's master plan carried out by Starscream is to free all the inmates. Starscream releases them all, and the criminals with prior association with Megatron are recruited into his new army. Soundwave provides armaments, and Starscream introduces Megatron to a new arm-mounted fusion cannon. Blasting a hole in the wall with his new weapon, Megatron orders the group to attack with an offensive that is as simple as it is destructive: Everything burns.

In an area inhabited by Cybertron's high class, snooty recreation comes to an end when Skywarp and Thundercracker fire upon an airborne vessel, causing it to crash below, destroying an incredible amount on the way down.

Soundwave meets with his boss, Senator Ratbat. The senator admits that not only did he aid Megatron's cause by supplying arms, he was also the one who arranged for Megatron to be removed from the mining operation where he was originally working. Now that Megatron's forces have destabilized the area, the senator is embezzling what he can before moving on to new pastures. Soundwave, however, shoots Ratbat, takes Ratbat's ill-gotten gains, and seals his spark inside of a frame — his new "cassette" body. Evidently, Soundwave prefers Megatron as his new boss.

Sentinel Prime and the other Autobots fight to retake Kaon from the rioting rebellion. However, the rebels are causing massive damage, have jammed communications with Iacon, and just won't give an inch of ground. Running out of options, Sentinel Prime decides to bring his incredible assortment of firepower (using his Apex System) head to head against Megatron. A colossal explosion blasts Megatron out of sight.

Sentinel Prime radios to the other Autobots that he's created a route that can be used to fight against the enemy. But when his armor's helmet is shattered by Hound's body, he discovers that Megatron still functions. Their struggle takes them over a precipice as they battle while discussing Megatron's goal: Megatron wants to transform the world. With a final strike, Megatron (possibly) kills the Prime.

The other Autobots arrive, following Sentinel Prime. They find their leader's body. Prowl, assuming command, orders a retreat.

Megatron sits on his throne and discusses the victory with Soundwave. Now that Kaon has been taken, the next step is clear — the rest of Cybertron shall be conquered. But they will not do it as Cybertronians. From this day forward, they are the Decepticons.

The Great War has begun...
Errors
* On page 10, Trailbreaker is depicted grabbing Starscream as the Decepticon makes his escape. Starscream then kicks the Autobot off, sending him into what is heavily implied to be his death (what with the long fall into a massive explosion and all), despite Trailbreaker turning up alive and well many years later in the previously published Spotlight: Kup as well as the later published Spotlight: Blaster. This is not the first time that the Megatron Origin books would conflict with the events in Spotlight: Kup.
* It also wouldn't be the last time a Spotlight issue has a conflicting plot point, as despite appearances here, Hound shows up fine in Spotlight: Galvatron.
* Straxus shows up as one of the Senate guards... when really he shouldn't be there at all.
* The string of word bubbles meant for Ratbat on page 12 instead appear to come from Ravage.

Items of note
* Civilians cry out "Primus!" when they are attacked by Thundercracker and Skywarp. The name is only used as a curse here, but it is significant because the principal writer of the series at the time, Simon Furman, intended to keep Primus and Unicron out of this continuity. Although Furman didn't write Megatron Origin, he did comment on it on his blog: "just because someone refers to something called Primus, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s G1 Primus. There are still no plans to do feature Primus (as was). But is/was there someone or something called Primus in the IDW/TF-verse, quite possibly."
* According to Alex Milne, Sentinel Prime isn't actually dead, and the script called for him to look like he could go either way. But he is drawn with a gaping hole in his chest and an expression of horror frozen on his face, and his colors are extremely washed-out. The dialogue leaves the question "He alive?" spoken but unanswered.
* Sentinel Prime uses Apex Armor, a reference to the Commemorative Series reissue of Powermaster Optimus Prime.
* Megatron's intention to "create desolation — and call it peace!" is a paraphrase of the real-life Caledonian chieftain Calgacus, who described the philosophy of the Romans he was fighting against: "To robbery, slaughter, plunder, they give the lying name of empire; they make a solitude and call it peace." Megatron's wording also reflects the motto from his original bio, "Peace through tyranny."
* Starscream gives Megatron his fusion cannon. It shouldn't be hard to see the irony in this.
Synopsis
The closing scenes of The Transformers: The Movie show us the destruction of Unicron and the Autobots escape, along with their victory celebration on Cybertron.

It is the year 2005. Autobots have reclaimed Cybertron while the Decepticons, now squabbling with each other for energon, retreated to the planet Chaar. Astrotrain returns to the planet with a pitiful number of energon cubes, resulting in a tussle as the Decepticons fight for their share. Cyclonus realizes that to return the Decepticons to fighting form, they need drastic measures.

Somewhere else, the first Galactic Olympics are being held. Blurr is griping about being stuck in a mission with Wheelie when he wants to join the events. But Perceptor wants them to go to Autobot City on Earth, to deliver the new transformation cog for Metroplex, as his old one was damaged during the battle the year before.

Meanwhile, the Galactic Olympics are being sabotaged. A Skuxxoid detonates the Olympic flame, raining smoke down on the area and allowing a group of Sharkticons to land. The Autobots fight back, but in the confusion, Spike, Kup and Ultra Magnus are kidnapped. Rodimus Prime immediately suspects Decepticon shenanigans and orders the planet quarantined, but they are unable to prevent the Skuxxoid's spaceship from taking off. Arcee and Springer set off to find a spacecraft of their own so they can pursue it.

Cyclonus, Scourge and the Sweeps sneak into Unicron’s head, still orbiting Cybertron. They're able to access Unicron's memory banks and watch footage of Rodimus's battle with Galvatron, culminating in the Decepticon leader being flung into space. Cyclonus then does some fast calculations and works out that Galvatron would eventually have reached the planet Thrull. There they see their leader soaking in the hot lava pools.

On Earth, Blaster and Outback go to the Federated Republic of Carbombya to investigate EDC reports of Decepticons in that country. Despite the country's ruler, Abdul Fakkadi, claiming that they would never harbour such criminals, the Autobots land. Outback, equipped with a “Decepticon detector”, then flushes out Dirge and Ramjet. The two Autobots get the coordinates of Chaar from them... which they report to Rodimus Prime who wants to go there to investigate.

Arcee and Springer, meanwhile, have pursued the Skuxxoid to an asteroid, which he ducks behind. The Autobots follow, only for their ship to be seized by a huge claw. They evacuate the ship, only to find that the "asteroid" is actually a disguised spacecraft. Springer hijacks it from the Skuxxoid, who escapes in his smaller ship and then calls his benefactor to confirm that the Autobots indeed suspect the Decepticons to be behind the disruption. The tentacled, egg-shaped benefactor listens to the report and then tunes out as he sees their prisoners, Spike, Kup and Ultra Magnus, being led by a Sharkticon.

Cyclonus, Scourge and the Sweeps return to Chaar, where the rest of the Decepticons are convinced that the solution to their problems is to have a strong leader again. They cheer when they hear that Galvatron lives, and are desperate enough that they give their remaining scraps of energon for reviving him. Rodimus Prime and Grimlock are spying nearby. Rodimus almost pities them, while Grimlock finds it funny (giving a rather possessed-sounding chuckle). Rodimus realizes that the Decepticons are too down on their luck to be the ones responsible for the kidnappings. Their cover suddenly gets blown and the Decepticons attack.
Quotes
Cyclonus: Once Decepticons nearly held the quadrant through terror. Now we scrap like slaargs over a few energon cubes. Is this how you honour the memory of Galvatron?! Is this the fate of the mighty Decepticon Empire?!<br>
Astrotrain: In the days of Megatron, it was not like this.<br>
Cyclonus: You mean Galvatron.<br>
Cyclonus and the Sweeps: Hail Galvatron! Hail Galvatron! Hail Galvatron!<br>
Astrotrain: [Muttering to Menasor] Well, they were the same guy.
:—The Decepticons remember the good old days.

"Let's do it!"<br>
"Didn’t you want to say something about concord and tranquility in the galaxy?"<br>
"Aww, give me a break. Start the games!"

"Ah, Rodimus is missing a few chips."<br>
"Nah, I was the same way until I got blown apart a few times."
Rodimus Prime: This planet is quarantined. Nobody comes, nobody goes until we find Kup, Spike and Magnus.<br>
Arcee: And what if we don't?<br>
Rodimus Prime: Then we'll trash every Decepticon in the galaxy!<br>
[A spaceship escapes]<br>
Springer: So much for quarantine. I need a ship!<br>
Arcee: And you’ll need a gunner!<br>

Cyclonus: There’s nothing to fear; Unicron is dead.<br>
Cyclonus: Quiet!
:—Cyclonus and Scourge learn that daddy's still home.

"Our charts don’t show any planets in that sector—no, wait. Here it is. I thought it was a smudge on the screen.<br>
Wildrider: Or ... Well, I'll think of somethin'.
:-The Stunticons see the newer Decepticons return to Chaar.

Notes
Animation or technical glitches
"Five Faces of Darkness" is one (five) of the most notoriously error-plagued episodes in the entire series. Brace yourself...
* Quite a few Transformer voices appear to be processed with a very heavy bass end in this episode, including Rodimus, Arcee, Outback, and Springer.
* Chaar's moon and sun are bizarre. If the opening animation is to be believed, the moon takes about 20 seconds to orbit the planet, yet when we see it again later, it's just sitting there. The moon also appears to set with the red dusk sky behind it. The red dusk sky is a red dusk sky despite the sun having passed overhead in the opposite direction. The red dusk sky is also visible along the horizon in all directions. Maybe Chaar sits in a nebula?
* Long Haul is missing when the Constructicons combine.
* After he knocks Astrotrain away from the energon cube, Devastator's mouth does some lip-flapping, but there's no dialog to go with it.
* Menasor's "hi-yah!" sword grunts aren't in his voice. He sounds more like an unprocessed Astrotrain or Bonecrusher. When he finally speaks a non-grunt line, he suddenly goes to his own voice, right after a generic-voice grunt.
* Devastator goes from his usual eyeband, to two large separate eyes as he grabs the energon cube, to two small separate eyes as Menasor whacks him apart.
* Menasor's first sword strike clearly knocks Devastator into his components (well, some components, anyway; none of them look like actual pieces of Devastator.) Devastator then re-forms with no transformation noise.
* When Menasor smashes Devastator apart the second time, only Bonecrusher, Scavenger, Hook and Long Haul are shown. Bonecrusher shouldn't be there (he didn't "have the energy to hang on"), and Scrapper and Mixmaster are totally unaccounted for.
* As a shot hits the energon cube next to him, Kickback grunts with the same generic voice that Menasor had earlier.
* Kickback is drawn with the more toy-centric version of his insect mode, wherein his robot face is clearly visible on the bottom of his insect head; he even visibly emotes and looks around with it. Most episodes portray him with his robot face concealed in his insect mode.
* The vehicle-mode Sweeps first show up in their incorrect "early" models, with their robot-mode heads sticking out of the top. This model would appear again and again and again through the series.
* As Cyclonus and company approach, Astrotrain finally completes his transformation to robot mode, but with no transformation noise.
* The first Sweep to transform and land is also missing his transformation sound.
* Jazz is shown winning the first race in the Galactic Olympics, but a few seconds later an announcer declares that "the winner is Munka Spanka." It's possible a generic character was intended for use in the scene and Jazz was mistakenly picked at random; however, given Jazz's prominent survival of the movie, it seems more likely that an editing mistake failed to portray the passage of time (and other races) after Jazz's win. Fans also have speculated that this was an intentional name change, prompted by the fact that Scatman Crothers, Jazz's voice actor, had recently passed away, though why this would be necessary for a non-speaking part is unclear.
* The Quintesson monitor shows Magnus and company against a blue sky, when they'd been standing against an orange wall a second earlier.
* Improbable viewpoints:
** How did the Quints get that footage of the Autobots, anyway?
** Okay, maybe Unicron can monitor and record events within his own body. But does he really have a camera outside himself to show things like Galvatron flying out of him and off into the distance?
* In addition to lighting up, the button that the Quintesson pushes changes shape when pushed.
* One of the scrambling Olympians walks right through a column during the torch attack.
* Arcee and Springer's "cooking my sensors" lines carry an echo that shouldn't be there, as if they were in a soundproof room.
* When Rodimus starts shooting, he gets the second half of Optimus Prime's laser rifle sound effect. A second later, he gets the whole sound effect.
* How are the Sharkticons so consistently in shadow when everyone else is not?
* Rodimus is missing the "age lines" on his face as he threatens to trash the Decepticons, which basically makes him Hot Rod.
* The center piece of Rodimus's spoiler is yellow instead of orange as he watches Springer and Arcee leave the stadium.
* Cybertron's appearance has changed a LOT since the movie. The first shot shows it looking like one of its own moons, with almost no detailing. The second shows it with much more detailing, but still very different than its previous appearance.
* Cyclonus is far too large as he stands on Unicron's face, taller than Unicron's eyes. He should be a speck at that distance.
* One of Scourge's helmet rims is white instead of blue as he says the "no wind in space" line.
* Unicron's snoozing groan is recycled as Scourge spots Galvatron's hand on Thrall. Is Scourge supposed to be hearing Galvatron snore from across millions of miles of space?
* The helmet rim around Outback's eyes is consistently colored blue instead of light gray. This could be an alternate model sheet, given its consistency. Later episodes would show him with his eyes the same color as the rest of his face.
* Rodimus's "smudge on the screen" is a sharp, glowing, blinking dot.
* The Skuxxoid's ship is white when it leaves the Olympics planetoid, but light orange as Arcee and Springer pursue it through space.
* In an odd moment of humanizing, Springer and Arcee clench their eyes shut when their ship is grabbed by the claw.
* A repeat of the establishing shot of Chaar includes its moon (which, by the by, is a recycled Cybertron moon design.) This time, instead of warping around the planet, the moon is hanging in the sky, stationary.
* Two different pans across the assembled Decepticons show quite a few robots that don't correspond to any actual character. The characters are distant enough that the animators probably figured we wouldn't notice.
* Dirge is with the Decepticons on Chaar as they debate leadership. How'd he get back there from Earth? In the same shot, Soundwave's shoulder button is blue instead of white.
* Cyclonus has consistently had three Sweeps up to this point, but as they return to Chaar there's suddenly half a dozen of them.
* Drag Strip has a gray optic visor during the "I'll think of something" line. It should be red.
* The subsequent shots of cheering Decepticons are infamously screwed up. The first one features:
** Tantrum well before the Predacons have actually been introduced to the series. To be fair, the Predacons' later introduction is so ambiguous that it might not be a genuine screwup to have one of them present.
** An off-model non-conehead Seeker in Ramjet's colors
** Octane also makes his inauspicious debut here, without any sort of explanation or introduction, though it doesn't actually contradict anything to have him there.
* The second cheering shot has Soundwave with a malformed, half-colored visor.
* When Motormaster throws down his energon, Hook and Long Haul are standing nearby. When he falls over in the subsequent shot, they've both been replaced by generics in the same pose.

* The third cheering shot ("Giiiiive till it hurrrrts!") features two more made-up Seeker models, a random blue guy, and Galvatron himself cheering for his own eminent rescue.
* As the Decepticons rally to attack Rodimus and Grimlock, two Motormasters run past the camera.
* When Cyclonus fires on the rock outcrop, some guy in Fireflight's colors is behind him. The subsequent shot of charging Decepticons includes several made-up guys.
* The line of charging Decepticons at the end includes a Seeker in Silverbolt's colors.

Continuity errors
* Most of the character screwups on Chaar are probably just cheap/lazy/screwed up animation; in fact, all the off-model and made-up designs could really be excused as generic Decepticons we've never met before, if one is so inclined (and one is prepared to accept that for some reason, we never see them again, either.) However, Kickback and Shrapnel have a whole sequence dedicated to them landing, trying to munch an energon cube, and then fleeing, which is far too long and explicit not to be a scripted appearance. Both characters were supposedly reformatted into Sweeps during Transformers: The Movie.
* Why does Astrotrain wait until he's landed to gobble some of the energon he's struggling to reach?
* So why didn't Menasor grab and eat the energon cube he just fought so hard for?
* Perceptor's description of the transforming cog is rather confusing. He introduces it as Autobot City's transformation cog, but then says "it controls Metroplexs ability to transform". This begins an ongoing trend of the cartoon dialog treating the two as if they were one and the same, despite the animation showing them as two distinct (though sometimes related) entities.
* "How we gonna find the Decepticons? It's like looking for a needle in a haystack!" It would be, Blaster, except that they conveniently left their Decepticon insignias in place for you to see.
* How do Arcee and Springer hear the Skuxxoid's voice? He's inside a space ship, and they're on the outside. Does the ship have its own external atmosphere?
* Voice consistency for the show's more obscure characters took a nosedive after the movie, starting with this episode:
** Ramjet has nearly the right voice, but it lacks the clipped mannerism that characterized his speech throughout the second season. Instead of sounding like an enforcer, he sounds... cheerful. In fairness, he occasionally lost that mannerism during Season 2.
** Onslaught's lines, beginning with "I admire your passion, my friend...", are provided by Terry McGovern in this episode, as opposed to his regular actor, S. Marc Jordan. Jordan would later be replaced again by Steve Bulen for Onslaught's final line of the series in "The Rebirth, Part 3".
** Terry McGovern tries on a brand new voice for Wildrider's two lines. He'll also develop a hick accent that he didn't have before in "The Burden Hardest to Bear".
* We never do find out why Cyclonus is carrying around a big black box. It's not present in the next episode.

Continuity notes
* This episode picks up an unspecified amount of time after The Transformers: The Movie (which had played in theaters during the summer preceding this episode's debut), and draws directly on many of its events. References include the Battle of Autobot City, Unicron's head orbiting Cybertron, the loss of Optimus Prime, the rise of Galvatron, and more.
* The episode even opens with some of the closing scenes from the movie. The scenes were re-soundtracked with the cartoon's standard background music for television airing. A second movie excerpt, also resoundtracked, is used to show the end of Rodimus's battle with Galvatron.
* First appearances: Outback, Octane, Tantrum (who probably shouldn't be here yet) and Abdul Fakkadi.
* Dirge's "Death comes to he who crosses me," line is a slight paraphrase of a line cut from the original Transformers The Movie script, "Death comes to anyone who crosses me." It was to be delivered aboard Astrotrain as the Decepticons squabbled over leadership. Another iteration comes in the later episode "Starscream's Ghost" ("I know, I know - 'Death comes to anyone who hides behind my marker!'"), though Dirge is not mentioned by name.

Real-world references
* The Galactic Olympics are, obviously, based on the modern Olympic Games, including the opening parade of "nations" and the Olympic torch presiding over the events.
* Middle East tensions in the 1980s resulted in the poorly made (depending on whom you ask) spoof called Carbombya.
* In one scene, Blurr asks why Metroplex's new transformation cog wasn't shipped via Galactic Express, an allusion to the fact that John Moschitta had previously appeared in a series of Federal Express commercials.
* Star Wars sound effects:
** Kickback and Shrapnel fly in with Millennium Falcon engine whine, and take off with the ship's engine burst noise.
** Ramjet and Thrust get the TIE Fighter engine sound as they lose control amid Outback's explosive. Some Millennium Falcon engine whine can be heard as well.

Trivia
* In an interview with Flint Dille, he said that the Quintesson origin story came from "The Secret of Cybertron," an aborted script for the movie by him and his fellow writer, Jay Bacal.
* When originally aired, this and the other four parts of the story all had a unique set of opening credits. Unfortunately, the DVD release of the mini-series only includes this opening on parts 3 and 5.
:Magmatron is a Predacon from the Beast Era portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.
predacon

As befits a decorated Warrior-General, Magmatron is capable of both elegant, reasoned judgment and wild, vicious action. Once he has set his sights on a goal, his drive to achieve it is unwavering and he will accept nothing less than total victory. Despite these attributes, and prodigious physical power, Magmatron's greatest advantage often lies in his charismatic leadership. Revered and admired by his soldiers, Magmatron fits the title "Emperor of Destruction" better than most.

On the surface, Magmatron seems to have much in common with Megatron. Both are schemers and planners, willing to subvert the established Predacon power structure to suit their plans and ultimate ambition for power, and possessing the strength to fight off any who challenge them. Their key difference lies in their relationships to that power structure. Megatron is at heart a rebel, working outside existing society. Magmatron, on the other hand, values his position of power and eminence in the current Predacon hierarchy, and though he schemes to someday stand at the top of that body, he is unwilling to risk his current high standings any more than he must to achieve those future goals. Also, while Megatron is more openly abusive and harsh with his troops, Magmatron operates with more military professionalism when interacting with his own soldiers. This aspect of Magmatron's personality may also be due to his more professional background, as opposed to Megatron's more rogue-ish ways.

Magmatron possesses a mitotic spark which allows him to separate into three dinosaur forms called Landsaur, Seasaur, and Skysaur, or merge them into a single monstrosity called Magmasaur.

After the defeat of Galvatron, Magmatron (who suffers from a similar chronic grin, even while talking) became the new Predacon Emperor of Destruction. A loyal and effective servant to the cause of Predacon equality on Cybertron, Magmatron was perfectly suited for the job. He had a long-standing rivalry with Big Convoy, albeit there was a mutual respect between the two enemies.

Aboard his ship, the Dinosaur, he tracked Big Convoy and his Maximal recruits to the planet Gaea where he learned of the Angolmois capsules that had been launched from the self-destructing Nemesis. Magmatron immediately set a course to track them down, desiring their incredible power. Competing with Big Convoy, Magmatron secured numerous capsules for the Predacons.

However, he did not keep them long. The Blendtrons, a trio of super-powerful and freakish Transformers, stole the capsules from both factions. As it turned out, the Angolmois energy was actually the lifeforce of Unicron. Offering up Galvatron's corpse as a new body, the Blendtrons released the Angolmois energy and Unicron was reborn.

Magmatron immediately challenged the Chaos Bringer but was quickly vanquished into a wormhole, leaving his crew of Predacons leaderless and rather ineffective. Magmatron escaped the wormhole toward the end of the Unicron battle, after Unicron had possessed Vector Sigma, and willingly fought side-by-side with Big Convoy and the Maximals to stop their mutual enemy.

After a lengthy battle, Unicron was defeated and driven from Vector Sigma by Big Convoy's Matrix Buster. Putting aside their rivalry, Big Convoy and Magmatron formed an alliance. The Maximals and Predacons then worked side-by-side and hand-in-hand to rebuild their ravaged planet.

Beast Wars Neo comic
Magmatron and his forces were changed into Transformers from actual animals by the power of the Angolmois capsules. Magmatron and Big Convoy battled across the cosmos until Magmatron was finally felled by the might of Unicron. In his dying moments, he repented of his wrong-doings, and indeed, Big Convoy struck the blow that finished Unicron once and for all with Magmatron's own sword.

IDW Beast Wars comics
During the early days of the Pax Cybertronia, Magmatron endangered the fragile peace, being an indomitable general who would not accept defeat. When he was finally brought to heel by the Tripredacus Council, he still chafed under the terms of the treaty and the council's apparent willingness to roll over for the Maximals. However, he accepted his change in status and maneuvered into a position on the Bi-Partate Committee for State Affairs alongside his old enemy, Big Convoy. Beast Wars Sourcebook

Frustrated by the Council's decision to bide its time, Magmatron recruited a small band of disenchanted warriors and fostered a professional relationship with the Tripredacus agent Ravage to keep abreast of the situation on Earth. With this information, he formed an elegant and tightly-knit plan to travel backwards in time to prehistoric Earth and reprogram all of the remaining protoform Maximals into Predacons. Keeping his plans secret until the last moment, he revealed to his forces that the Council has ordered him to pick up where their previous agent failed: capture the rogue Megatron.

Chronically displacing his crew so that they could not be detected by the beast warriors who are already there, they set to work. He ordered Razorbeast to begin activating the stasis pods while Spittor, Manterror, Transquito, and Iguanus reported on their progress. They witnessed the birth of three Predacons, but Spittor was greeted by the Maximal, Polar Claw. More Maximals were spotted, revealing Razorbeast as a spy, but the red warthog escaped into the wilderness. The Gathering issue 1

Once his new army was assembled, Magmatron ordered them to hunt down the Maximals. Drill Bit and Spittor, however, accompanied Magmatron on his personal quest to find Razorbeast. He located the spy and quickly gained the upper hand with his three dinosaur modes, but Razorbeast pulled a fast one, and buried the Predacon leader beneath a mountainside. Magmatron soon recouped his losses by recovering the spark of the Tripredacus agent, Ravage. The Gathering issue 2

Iguanus, having located a blank protoform, assisted Magmatron with rebirthing Ravage in a new, Transmetal 2 body. After issuing seek-and-destroy orders to his new lieutenant, Magmatron set forth on his next mission. He located Megatron, and the two engaged in battle. Megatron insisted that Magmatron was foolish for coming after him alone, as Ravage did, but Magmatron was not alone—Iguanus and Drill Bit ambushed Megatron.

With the transwarp shunt set up and ready to send Megatron into the hands of the Council, it was with reluctance that Magmatron again did battle. This time, an intruding Grimlock challenged the Predacon schemer. The Gathering issue 3 A tough fight, but Magmatron's triple beast modes eventually won out. Grimlock was enough of a distraction, however, to let Razorbeast and Optimus Minor enter his camp. Magmatron was thwarted by Razorbeast in hand-to-hand combat. As the Predacon lunged toward Minor, who was sitting upon the unconscious Megatron, the monkey activated a chronal displacement device. This sent Megatron back into his own chronal place, making Magmatron stumble onto the transwarp shunt. Razorbeast activated it, sending the warlord to parts unknown. The Gathering issue 4

Razorbeast's meddling in Magmatron's escape caused the Predacon commander to be consigned to a temporal limbo, able to traverse the whole of history but unable to affect any of the events he witnessed. Through this, he saw the eventual end of Cybertron as its inhabitants set upon each other with beastly fury while Shokaract summoned Unicron to devour the planet. Knowing that the roots of this catastrophic event were already beginning in his time, Magmatron turned to the enemy who had consigned him to this fate. Exerting what little influence he could, he stabilized Razorbeast's Transwarp carrier signal, allowing the time-lost Maximal's message to be received by Lio Convoy. The Ascending issue 1

Magmatron's meddling effect on the timestream was noticed by Unicron, who dispatched Rartorata to Earth to deal with the assembling combatants there. His ability to change the future was increased further, however, when during the confusion of the battle on Earth between the Maximal and Predacon forces, a playing 'possum Ravage made contact with the chronal displacement bands. Magmatron was able to use his limited influence to hold Ravage inside Chronospace, where he was able to make contact with the former Decepticon. Magmatron briefed him on the apocalypse that could yet come, urging him to call a truce with the Maximals in an effort to stop the end of all things. The Ascending issue 2

After a combined group of Maximals and Predacons returned with Ravage to present-day Cybertron to battle Shokaract, Ravage again briefed with Magmatron, who instructed him to send a Maximal to attach a chronal-displacement device onto Shokaract's body. When this happened (at the cost of Prowl II), Shokaract was brought to Magmatron within Chronospace. Magmatron showed him Cybertron's future and the realization that he was a pawn of Unicron caused Shokaract to rip out his Anti-Matrix and explode, sending Magmatron back to his normal time on Cybertron (and cause a disruption in transwarp space where Autobot shuttle Omega Delta was travelling). Magmatron stated there would be no more war, for the day at least, and reported that Razorbeast died heroically.

Things might have gone that way, if Megatron hadn't escaped and showed up. Way to go, Magmatron. The Ascending issue 4

Beast Machines toy bio
Magmatron is a member of the Dinobot faction, revered and reviled in equal measure. He'd been on an intergalactic quest for energy capsules, but when he returned to Cybertron he found it being overrun by Vehicon drones!

While he has the nickname "Emperor of Destruction", he serves under T-Wrecks.
: Magmatron transforms from a massive robot into three prehistoric reptiles—a Quetzalcoatlus ("Skysaur"), a Giganotosaurus ("Landsaur"), and an Elasmosaurus ("Seasaur"). These three beasts can also combine into some horrible, chimeric dragon-like creature. In robot mode, Magmatron has free-rolling wheels on his feet, for some unknown purpose.

: The Landsaur unit features a spring-loaded launcher in its mouth, enabling it to fire any of the five missiles the toy comes with. The launcher/throat assembly disconnects for robot mode, forming a sword-hilt primarily for use with the sword-blade missile. The hilt can also be converted into a pistol by flipping out an extra handle from the side. The Seasaur's lower body forms a shield that mounts on Magmatron's left arm; it also contains two grey missiles, and features a spring-loaded gimmick that causes the front paddles to flap when the rear ones are squeezed together. The Skysaur's wings feature a spring-loaded flapping action, triggered by pulling on its tail, and also hide a pair of smooth red blade/missiles.
Notes
* Magmatron's Maximal status on his Beast Machines toy bio (and the rest of his bio, for that matter) is difficult to reconcile with his appearances elsewhere, but one hypothetical sequence of events is that, after the climax of Beast Wars Neo, he returned to Cybertron, discovered it overrun with Megatron's Vehicons, changed his allegiance to Maximal, and fought the Vehicons as a member of the Dinobots. Or, call it a micro-continuity and be done with it.

* Magmatron's Maximal on-package bio gives his quotation as "Til all is won", an obvious reference to a similar phrase that pops up in numerous other places in Transformers lore.
Synopsis
En route to San Francisco, the Autobots and NEST soldiers converse about their mission. Two Decepticons have been spotted in the city, but thankfully, there was no mention of robots, so they must be in their vehicle modes. Lennox wonders how their team can do this without drawing attention from bystanders; Ironhide tells him to leave it to the Autobots, knowing that the two Decepticons will put up a fight. Once they land, Salani reminds them that this is for real. Team 3 is to serve as perimeter defense, Team 2 sets up the trap, and Team 1 (consisting of Lennox, Optimus Prime, and Bumblebee) will flush them out. Lennox once again lays down the plans, with a chemical spill used as cover for their operations, as they need as much secrecy as possible.

In downtown San Francisco, the area is cordoned off, and the civilians have been moved out, so Team 2 is cleared to go. Ratchet teases Ironhide about his appearance being unsuited to the mission, but Ironhide tells him to stow it. Suddenly, Ratchet picks up energy readings, then Swindle and Deadend crash through a sliding wall and Team 2 picks up the chase. Swindle thinks that, if Barricade's intel is right, he and Deadend are chased by Ironhide and Ratchet; no sign of Prime. Just then, Prime appears out of nowhere and runs over Deadend. Oops. Swindle runs off, but Bumblebee chases after him.

Prime is okay, but Deadend isn't, as noted by Ratchet. Salani calls Epps for a clean-up crew, while at the Golden Gate Bridge, Epps asks Lennox for his status. Lennox is pursuing Swindle, and Swindle is heading toward the Bridge fast. Lennox tells Epps to have the soldiers let Swindle get a bit of "clearance", then he and Bumblebee continue the pursuit. When they reach the bridge, Swindle transforms and is incredulous that Bumblebee came alone, but Lennox tells him otherwise. Swindle blasts at them, then beats up Bumblebee. Lennox fires at Swindle, and he turns his attention to Lennox, but before he can do anything, Bumblebee blasts him. Dying, Swindle declares: "None of you are safe. We'll find it," but shuts down before he says anything more. Lennox considers the mission a success, and Epps thinks they pulled off the secrecy thing.

Hours later, during the trip back to base, Optimus Prime notes that Lennox looks tired, but Lennox says that he was wondering if things are about to get worse, and is worried about what Swindle said. Prime asks him if he's also worried about Sam Witwicky; Lennox says yes, but is more concerned about the "we'll" part--are more Decepticons going to arrive, and if so, why are they on Earth? Prime doesn't have the answer to that, but does agree that Sam needs to be kept safe--whatever's going on, Prime thinks he's going to be involved. Lennox tells Prime that they need someone to watch over him, and Prime knows just the one.

When the team lands back at the base, a refreshed Epps meets with the still-tired Lennox, who tells him that something's going on out there. Epps tells him that they're ready for anything, but Lennox questions this, saying that for all their training, they weren't clean during the day's mission. Epps thinks it could have been worse, but Lennox says that it might get worse, as well as saying that Bumblebee is leaving the team to once again guard Sam. Epps is upset, saying that they can't lose team members that came from another planet; Lennox agrees.

Later, Lennox is debriefed by the Army on the day's mission. Lennox tells them about the incident at the Golden Gate Bridge; the commander debriefing the team isn't pleased with this, as they were given strict orders to not transform. If the Decepticons did so, then so be it; however, the team was ordered not to, as the Army doesn't want to risk disclosure in a major city again. Lennox says that they had no choice, as the Decepticons had engaged them, and they took caution in how they responded. The commander says that civilians aren't used to seeing robots or jets flying in major cities. Lennox points out the jet was an enemy, and only proves that the army needs the Autobots on their side. The situation isn't perfect, but they're working on it, and despite the incident at the bridge the mission was a success.

The army commander still isn't sold on Lennox's idea. They authorized that mission, but they expect that the rules to be followed in the missions that will be coming, and that the unit will be used to fix problems, not make new ones. After making Lennox clear on this issue, the commander says he'll pass this onto his superiors, and tells Lennox that he and his men need to look over the day's mission and learn from them. When the conversation ends, Lennox is upset at the commander, saying that he's impossible to work with. Prime says that the team will have to work harder, but Lennox thinks that the problem is the army still doesn't get the difference between Autobots and Decepticons. Optimus Prime says that they have to succeed.

The next day, Bumblebee says his brief good-byes to the group. Ironhide tells him to stay out of trouble, while Optimus Prime reminds Bumblebee that Sam's protection is his first priority, then Bumblebee leaves. Later, the team is briefed by the army. There have been multiple Decepticon sightings all over the globe. Lennox lets Optimus Prime talk to the army, and Prime believes that, given Swindle's comments, the Decepticons are looking for something, be it Megatron's remains, Sam's house, or something else. The commander asks if they aren't spreading out for another attack, but Prime thinks these Decepticon soldiers are acting less like soldiers and more like scouts. The commander gives them new orders; they are to find these Decepticon scouts, engage, hunt down, and eliminate them.

And so, as Prime relates, with upgraded technology from Sector Seven installed by Ratchet, the Autobots found the Decepticons, and, when found, they were destroyed immediately (in Italy, Fracture gets smashed by Ironhide and falls to the ravine). With help from NEST, the war with the Decepticons continues. As weeks, then months went by, they trained and got better. Soldiers from all over the world signed up. Together, they celebrated triumph (in Europe, Overcast is shot down by NEST forces) and mourned those who made sacrifices (a mission in the Middle East resulted in the death of Salani as well as Jetstorm). They grew as a team and learned from one another, becoming stronger allies in an ever-changing war. The Decepticons wouldn't give them info, but they never lasted long enough anyway (in Florida, they eliminate Dropkick and Incinerator), and others they couldn't get rid of (Barricade flees after the Florida battle).

Each mission was followed with an army debriefing. It was from there that they received judgment and new orders. It was in one briefing that they were given hope and joy. The next day, the Autobots head to a junkyard. Lennox says that the rad detector is going crazy, and that it's not them. Optimus reassures Lennox, then calls to the hiding Autobots. The new Autobots respond by appearing (in the guises of a silver sports car, three motorcycles, and an old ice cream truck), and saying that they got Optimus' call. However, the reunion is cut short by more sightings. The old Autobots catch up with the new ones through their training. The training ends as they are called to the briefing room, as Optimus wonders that if something is out there, friend or foe, they are the only ones who can deal with the situation, one which is threatening their new home, themselves, and their alliance with the humans.

Inside, Lennox briefs the team on a new assignment, which will involve the new Autobots sticking to their training and watching their backs. Their target location: Shanghai...

* Much like the changes made to Josh Nizzi's cover for "Defiance issue 3", his cover for this issue went through several revisions. When it was previewed on ComicNewsi.com on December 13, 2008, the cover featured a much brighter background with only the Pyramid of Giza behind the characters; Optimus Prime was more awkwardly posed; Ironhide & Ratchet were large and prominent; and Jolt could be (barely) seen on the cover behind the three bikes. On Nizzi's final version, the tone is much darker and more sombre; at least two pyramids are visible; Optimus Prime has been given a different pose; Ironhide & Ratchet are less prominent and Jolt has been removed entirely, probably because he doesn't appear in the movie adaptation. The final published cover removes some forward window pillars that do not exist on Sideswipe's prop vehicle.
* Probably due to his last minute addition to the movie, Jolt is not seen among the new Autobots who appear at the end of this issue.
* Though they do not appear in this issue due to lack of space, Reverb and Gunbarrel are most likely to have been destroyed in Italy, judging by Ironhide's comment about Fracture being the last of the group there.
: A Toys "R" Us exclusive redeco of Cybertron Mudflap, Mudflap transforms into a yellow crane truck, although the Cyber Planet Key is now Cybertron styled with a movie Decepticon logo on it (painted over a normal Decepticon logo molded on the key, as evidenced by looking on the key's underside). The toy features two Cyber Key gimmicks, but unfortunately, they both suffer from design flaws. Inserting his key into the side of his cab flips out a firing missile launcher, which works fine in truck mode; in robot mode, however, it is slung under his right arm, and the spring-loaded hinge that flips it out is not strong enough to hold it up, meaning that it dangles loosely underneath his forearm. His second gimmick is his ridiculously colossal saw-blade—first, his crane arm is manually extended, opening up the Cyber Key slot in its side, and inserting the key then flips out the translucent blade. When fully extended, the blade and crane are about three times the height of his body. Sadly, the blade is molded from soft, flexible plastic, and if left undeployed for too long, essentially the amount of time it takes to go from manufacturing plant to retailer (arg),will warp due to tension from the spring holding it down.

He is also a major shelfwarmer (Maybe his nastiness extends beyond his universe).
* According to Hasbro designer Joe Kyde's design notes on Hasbro's Transformers website, Mudflap was originally going to use the unreleased Landslide deco, with the name "Sawtooth". It was decided that Landslide's deco wasn't realistic enough for the Movie toyline, so a new deco based on Micromaster Erector (giggle) was chosen. The name Sawtooth was unavailable, so he got stuck being Mudflap.
Mudflap is a Decepticon. A really nasty Decepticon, who tends to beat the slag out of already beaten Autobots. This brutal exterior, however, masks a weaker interior filled with doubt about being a Decepticon. He wants to quit and hook up with the Autobots, but knows that his reputation keeps him from having a chance at joining. So he's stuck with the 'Cons, and lets his enemies know it by way of inflicting enormous amounts of pain on them.
