Transformers Universe is a four-issue limited series published by Marvel Comics in 1986 featuring expanded bios for the Transformers that had appeared thus far in the comic and toy lines. The entries were organized alphabetically, with the exception that characters who first appeared in The Transformers: The Movie were held until Issue 4. Each character had a lengthy write-up, divided into three sections: Profile, Abilities, and Weaknesses. A header section gave the character's name, allegiance, function, and the issue number of their first Marvel Comics appearance, for those who had appeared in the book (which included the bulk of the entries).

Entries for characters from Transformers: The Movie differ greatly in style from the rest, sometimes omitting sections entirely. The writing style for these characters suggests that their profiles are actually pre-production notes from very early in the characters' development, before their character models had actually been designed; Cyclonus, for example, is described as a "multi-engine, and perhaps multi-wing" spacecraft, with weapons such as "an incendiary bomb rack" which are clearly not present on his character model.
Omissions
* Divebomb's eagle mode is not shown at all.
* Metroplex's entry includes no individual art for Scamper, Six Gun and Slammer.
* Perceptor's third "artillery piece" mode is mentioned but not shown.
* Sky Lynx's combined bird-lynx mode is omitted.
* Tracks' flying car mode is omitted.
* Like Metroplex, Trypticon's entry contains no artwork for Brunt and Full-Tilt (or even Wipe-Out).
* The "base" modes for the four Scramble City combiner team leaders are neither mentioned nor portrayed.
* Characters entirely missing include the Omnibots, the two Deluxe Vehicles (Roadbuster and Whirl), the four Deluxe Insecticons (Barrage, Chop Shop, Ransack and Venom), Reflector and...
Errors
* Bluestreak's name is parsed as two words: Blue Streak.
* Cassette-mode Buzzsaw is colored almost entirely red.
* Cliffjumper's "Weaknesses" are written as if he still has his preliminary nomenclature of 'Blow-Out'.
* Hot Spot's name is parsed as "Hotspot".
* Huffer's art features a rounded hood behind his head, out of keeping with his toy, alternate mode, and usual character model.
* The lower half of Kickback's face is colored the same blue-black as his body, as if he had a faceplate instead of a standard mouth.
* Megatron's art is based on his pre-animation model, including the differently-shaped head and a trigger on his fusion cannon. His pistol mode is mostly colored blue-black.
* Marvel had misplaced the model sheet for the front of Optimus Prime's vehicle mode, explaining why it is shown from behind.
* Ramhorn has a Decepticon symbol on both his rhino mode and his cassette mode.
* Roller and the Combat Deck are likewise not shown in Optimus Prime's entry.
* Perceptor's face gets the same colored-lower-half treatment as Kickback.
* The faces of Shrapnel, Sideswipe, Skywarp, Snarl and Slag are colored the same blue-black as their heads. Most should be white or light gray.
* Sideswipe is missing his shoulder missile launcher.
* Soundwave is drawn as though he has a mouth. He's colored purple instead of blue, but this is consistent with his appearance in the Marvel comics.
* Sunstreaker's entry notes his disdain for his brother Sideswipe's rear-mounted engine... even though Sunstreaker is the one with said engine.
* Steeljaw's entry is placed out of alphabetical order.
* Trailbreaker's forcefield projector is missing.
* Scourge's alternate mode is shown in the earlier (less toy-like) version which features his head poking out of the top, though his eyes have been replaced with some kind of scanner reading panel.
* The Movie characters' write-ups are incomplete. Arblus, Arcee, the Quintessons, and the Sharkticon are missing the "Abilities" section; Blurr, Cyclonus, Galvatron, Kup, Springer, Ultra Magnus, Wheelie and Wreck-Gar have no "Weaknesses" section.

Notes
* The series was later republished in a single volume although a handful of character profiles, such as Eject, Rewind, Inferno, Steeljaw, Sandstorm, Tailgate, Top Spin, Twin Twist and Pipes were left out (although their pictures appeared on the cover).
* Although cleaned up by artists Ian Akin and Brian Garvey, all the character artwork was based upon character models for the animated series.
* Characters such as Cyclonus who had two different character models generally use the earlier version, showcasing the divide between models used for the cartoon and models used for the comic.
* Issue 4 includes The Transformers: The Movie characters, including several non-toy characters.
* The profiles were also used as part of the UK comic’s "Transformers A-Z" feature.
* Scans of the series frequently appear on the Internet.
* Although the title on the cover is Transformers Universe, the title in the indicia is The Transformers Universe.
* Transformers Universe has essentially been supplanted by the More Than Meets The Eye guide books, which include profiles for every toy-based G1 Transformer, including the Micromasters.

Addenda
A second series was mentioned in the Marvel Comic's letter column but it never appeared. Instead starting with issue #47 of the Marvel Comic, new post-1986 character entries under the Transformers Universe heading began appearing on a semi-regular basis featuring artwork that was based upon the character models used in the US toy commercials. Although this process continued for the rest of the series, ending in issue #79, many 1987 and 1988 characters were ultimately denied a profile of their own.

* Sky Lynx's combined bird-lynx mode is omitted.
* Like Metroplex, Trypticon's entry contains no artwork for Brunt and Full-Tilt (or even Wipe-Out).
* The "base" modes for the four Scramble City combiner team leaders are neither mentioned nor portrayed.

Addenda
With issue #47 of the Marvel Comic, new post-1986 character entries under the Transformers Universe heading began appearing on a semi-regular basis featuring artwork that was based upon the character models used in the US toy commercials. Although this process continued for the rest of the series, ending in issue #79, many 1987 and 1988 characters were ultimately denied a profile of their own.

The 2007 Transformers film was accompanied by one of the largest product blitzes in the history of the Transformers brand. The prominence of the movie allowed Hasbro to push the toy line to new levels of complexity and diversity.

In addition to the standard "main line" figures, several sub-lines were developed. Some, such as the Fast Action Battlers and Cyber Slammers, are aimed at younger users. Others, such as Real Gear Robots and the various role play toys, expand on the plot and concepts of the movie.

Virtually all of the movie cast received multiple toy incarnations at various price points, from the tiny $4 Legends versions and two-for-$5 Robot Heroes PVCs up to the massive, complex, electronic $80 Ultimate Bumblebee. Given the limited number of Transformers featured in the movie, the toyline naturally contains many additional characters. Many of these are featured in alternate movie-related media, such as prequel comics and video games.

Toyline
Action Figures ("main" line)
Overview
The main line movie figures attempt to emulate the spindly, multi-faceted appearance of the screen characters, succeeding to a remarkable degree. This aesthetic carries over to characters that do not appear in the movie, giving the line a unified appearance. Most alternate forms are realistically styled contemporary Earth vehicles, many of which are licensed replicas.

The main line figures feature an above-average design complexity, with figures such as Deluxe Bumblebee packing an amazing number of moving parts into a small package. Transformations are fairly complex, and tend to capture the movie's visual spectacle of a vehicle flying apart into a thousand pieces as the robots transform. The primary gimmick of the main line is "Automorph Technology", a gimmick by which moving one piece of a toy will in turn move other pieces into their designated positions via hidden gears, furthering the parallel with the movie's visuals.

Many of the vehicle modes' exteriors are formed by thin panels, but limbs and torsos are sufficiently integral to the vehicle-mode panels that they are not shellformers. On some of the toys, these panels swing back on themselves or are otherwise concealed to such an extent that the finished robot gives comparatively little indication that it turns into a vehicle at all -- yet another point of unity with the movie's design aesthetic.

Unfortunately, due to issues of vehicle-mode licensing and the fact that the robot designs are the shared intellectual property of DreamWorks, it is a virtual certainty that the Movie toys will never be made available as redecos in other franchises or as convention exclusives. So get 'em while the getting's good!
Movie Real Gear Robots
Capitalizing on movie scenes in which the All Spark brings ordinary Earth machines to life, Real Gear Robots is a line of modern electronic items which convert to miniscule robots. The toys are comparable to the Scout class in size and price. Their alternate forms tend to be slightly scaled down from life size, with realism varying widely. The robot modes are generally more in line with the blocky aesthetic of Generation 1, rather than the more complex look of the movie characters.
Premium Series
In October 2007, Hasbro announced a series of "Premium" redecos of previously released Movie toys with an improved (oftentimes metallic) and more movie-accurate finish and paint applications. When the "Premium Series" was announced, it was confirmed to include a few redecos that had already been released by that point (and therefore didn't sport any indication that they were supposed to be part of a "Premium Series" on the packaging), as well as various other toys that wouldn't be revealed until later. Four of these redecos are store exclusives, whereas the rest has been confirmed to be available as part of the mass retail assortments. The Premium Series, as confirmed thus far, consists of:

Mass retail Deluxe Class toys
Notable international variants
Even though the Movie toyline differs from previous Transformers toylines insofar as TakaraTomy's Japanese versions of the toys were almost identical to their Hasbro counterparts (as a matter of fact, the Japanese "mainline" toys even come in Hasbro packaging, with additional Japanese stickers on the packaging identifying them as the Japanese versions), there are a few genuine variants - and on top of that, one of those variants was also released in the United Kingdom, making it the first shared Japanese/European "variant" toy since red Armada Powerlinx Thrust.

UK variants
* Nightwatch Optimus Prime (Leader Class; missing the US version's "Allspark Power" blue paint and coming in slightly different packaging) - was available in the UK several months before the US version came out, as an Argos exclusive

Japanese variants
* MA-03 Bumblebee (Deluxe Class Classic Camaro; using clear blue plastic for the windows with painted over yellow car parts, instead of the US version's yellow plastic with tampographed blue windows)
* MA-18 Nightwatch Optimus Prime (Leader Class; identical to the UK version)
* MD-22 Incinerator (Voyager Class; sporting a different main color color and a slightly different deco than the US version, thus making it more accurate to the V-22 Ospreys featured in the Movie; also comes with a small Allspark cube accessory)

International exclusives
Even though European countries got some of the US toyline's store exclusives (such as the Toys'R'Us exclusive "Decepticon Desert Attack" two-pack with Voyager Class Blackout and Deluxe Class Scorponok) as well, some of them even at mass retail (such as the Target exclusive Scout Class redecos of Cybertron toys, or the "Evolution of a Hero" two-pack with the Deluxe Class Classic and Concept Camaro Bumblebee toys), and some toys that were released as store exclusives in the UK (such as Deluxe Class Recon Barricade) or Japan (such as Leader Class Decepticon Brawl) were available at mass retail in the USA, there were some multi-packs and redecos that were genuine exclusives to European countries or Japan.

Non-US Legends Class single packs
*Cliffjumper (redeco of Legends Class Bumblebee)
*Recon Barricade (redeco of Legends Class Barricade)
*Autobot Jazz (minor redeco of Legends Class Autobot Jazz)
*Bonecrusher
:Note: The toys themselves are identical to those released as part of the "Allspark Battles" two-packs in the USA. However, these versions come on European-style single cards. Thus far, they have been released in various countries in Europa and Asia, as well as New Zealand.

UK exclusive multi-packs
* Autobot Jazz, Protoform Optimus Prime & Decepticon Brawl three-pack (Deluxe Class Autobot Jazz, Deluxe Class Protoform Optimus Prime & Deluxe Class Decepticon Brawl)
* Bumblebee and Optimus Prime two-pack (Deluxe Class Concept Camaro Bumblebee & Voyager Class Optimus Prime)
* "Towed to Safety" two-pack (Deluxe Class Longarm & Deluxe Class Classic Camaro Bumblebee)

Japanese exclusive redecos
*EZ Collection Bumblebee "scanning version" (a clear redeco of Legends Class Bumblebee, exclusively available with the August 2007 edition of Hyper Hobby magazine)
*Bumblebee "limited metallic color version" (a redeco of the first Deluxe Class Bumblebee toy with a shiny gold metallic finish, exclusively available at Lawson stores)
*Protoform Optimus Prime "Fusion Cluster Edition" (a redeco of Deluxe Class Protoform Optimus Prime in "entry mode" colors, exclusively available at the C3xHobby Convention and later also from e-Hobby)
*Protoform Starscream "Fusion Cluster Edition" (a redeco of Deluxe Class Protoform Starscream in "entry mode" colors, exclusively available at the C3xHobby Convention and later also from e-Hobby)
*Optimus Prime (a Movie-esque redeco of the Robots in Disguise Spychanger Scourge mold, available at pretty much every store for purchase of the Transformers Movie DVD)
*EZ Collection Bumblebee metallic version (a metallic redeco of Legends Class Bumblebee, exclusively available at Tsutaya Records stores for purchase of the Transformers Movie DVD)
*Blackout "4500x version" (a more movie-accurate redeco of Voyager Class Blackout and his little Scorponok companion, exclusively available at Lawson stores; virtually identical to Hasbro's "Premium Series" redeco of Blackout)
*Starscream Vardia Red Model (a red-ish redeco of Voyager Starscream, exclusively available at Toshiba stores for purchase of the Toshiba RD-A301 HD-DVD player)
* MA-20 Black Arcee (black redeco of Deluxe Class Arcee, based on the motorcycle used by William Lennox during the final battle of the Movie; thus far the only redeco of a movie toy available at mass retail in Japan with no US counterpart)
* Arcee G1 color edition (a pink and white redeco of Deluxe Class Arcee, limited to 1000 pieces, exclusively available at Wonder Festival 2008 Winter)
Trivia
*The "Ultra" pricepoint was abolished for the run of the Movie toyline. Hasbro will return to this pricepoint with Classics 2.0 Powerglide and Onslaught.

Since the movie's premiere, many fans have complained of a severe toy shortage in most markets, particularly the U.S. Mainline figures have proven to be more difficult to locate at retail than in many years, if not ever. This is due to the convergence of several factors:

*The tremendous success and high profile of the movie has vastly broadened the toy-buying audience, with many more kids, adult collectors, and scalpers seeking out product.
*Major retailers such as Wal-Mart and Target placed orders for TF movie product based on their sales records for Cybertron and Classics figures, as well as movie-related toylines in general, which tend not to do well (as the Spider-Man 3 figures still warming shelves wherever you live can attest).
*Unusual congestion at Chinese factories and shipping docks lengthened the time necessary to produce and ship new figures to the West.
Synopsis
Skids has returned from Limbo, but he's not alone -- the mind-leaches that infest the Limbo dimension have fashioned his nightmares into a reality, and that reality has followed him back to Earth in the form of monstrous creatures. The monsters taunt him, inviting him to join with them, but Skids vows to destroy them. To that end, he breaks into a nuclear power plant.

Elsewhere, Springer, Inferno and Broadside -- the last survivors of the decimated Wreckers -- are getting the runaround from their superiors on Cybertron. Feeling frustrated, they're eager to join forces with their one-time brothers in arms Carnivac and Catilla, when the two Decepticons drop by for a chat. The pair explain how they got their new Pretender shells; Snarler shows up about that point, not at all sanguine about the proposed alliance. A human radio call for help provides a convenient out for the Autobots; Springer and company head out, while Carnivac discusses matters with Snarler. The choice is simple, Snarler tells him: kill the Autobots, or face a charge of fraternizing with the enemy.

Springer and company head into the power plant, where Skids remains hesitant to take definitive action against the creatures -- the creatures are a part of him, and he wonders if killing them will destroy him as well. But the Autobots tell him he's got to take firm action one way or another. They can't shoot, for risk of setting off the reactor, and the monsters are getting the upper Springer puts a call in to Carnivac.

Carnivac, with Snarler staring him down, hesitantly refuses to come help. Snarler is satisfied -- leaving the enemy to die is enough. But Carnivac can't suppress his warrior's honor, and changes his mind. Catilla's happy to join as well. As they head off, Snarler vows that he'll be the first to sign up for the execution squad.

The two Decepticons make a dramatic entrance into the battle, and quickly turn the tables against the monsters. One of the creatures confesses to Skids -- they can survive without him, and vice versa. Angry at being played for a fool, Skids joins the others in a short, swift fight to destroy the creatures.

Afterwards, Carnivac is ready to head out, as the Decepticons will surely be coming after them. But Springer says they're all in it together, and offers them a place on the team. Catilla accepts the offer to become an honorary Autobot; Carnivac also joins, but on his own terms, as a Decepticon. The Wreckers, Skids, and former Mayhems are now... the Survivors!

Errors
* Skids is drawn with Crosscut's head and face throughout. Unfortunately, this means he looks like a completely different dude, <I>and</I> he can't really emote all that much.

Continuity & References
* Skids vanished into Limbo when Galvatron time-jumped from the future -- waaaay back in Fallen Angel, 120 issues earlier.
* Carnivac, Snarler and Catilla were granted their shells by Scorponok in exchange for running a mission for him -- namely, to kill Fortress Maximus's human partner, Spike Witwicky. The Man in the Machine! As Catilla didn't appear in that US story, it's explained here that he "just monitored", with no further elaboration.
* It's not really clear where Snarler came from. He could be a reserve member of the Mayhems, a previously unseen member of Scorponok's crew, or a recent arrival from Cybertron, but there's no direct evidence to support any of these ideas.

Items of note
* The Survivors storyline would eventually tie into the alternate continuity of the Earthforce storyline. It's not clear where one draws the line between the main storyline and this portion of the Earthforce branch.
* This was originally meant to be a 2-parter, but the change in format in #213 led to it being hacked into four parts.
