'''It's launch day for Rodimus and the crew of the ''Lost Light''—what could possibly go wrong?'''

==Synopsis==
Following [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]]'s [[Transformers: The Death of Optimus Prime|departure]] from [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], [[Hot Rod (G1)|Rodimus]] publicly announces his intent to do likewise aboard the ''[[Lost Light]]'', following the map found within the [[Matrix of Leadership|Matrix]] in hopes of locating the [[Knights of Cybertron]]. [[Prowl (G1)|Prowl]] predicts virtually no [[Autobot]]s will respond to his open invitation to join him, but Rodimus winds up with a little over two hundred recruits, including (much to [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]]'s consternation) [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]]—who believes he is getting old, a concern punctuated by his failure to save the life of a [[NAIL]] who has committed suicide as a political protest—[[Chromedome (G1)|Chromedome]]—the loss of whose scientific talents particularly infuriates Prowl, prompting him to order the loading of a mysterious cargo onto the ''Lost Light''—and Chromedome's friend, [[Rewind]]. [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]], of course, has misgivings about nearly every recruit, but Rodimus is thrilled to have so many.

In the skies above Cybertron, [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]] grieves in his own way for the loss of the world he had known and all the memories he made there. Detecting a life-sign resembling [[Scourge (G1)|Scourge]]'s, he investigates a small shack, only to find the unhinged [[Whirl (G1)|Whirl]] talking to a collection of [[Sweep]] corpses that he has strung up inside. Cyclonus enters and interrupts him just as he is about to burn down the [[energon]]-soaked building, and Whirl immediately attacks him, professing innocence and explaining the bodies were already dead: he had merely collected them. Cyclonus, for his part, doesn't care in the slightest, but can't convince Whirl of his fact.

Elsewhere, [[Red Alert (G1)|Red Alert]] is running security checks on the Autobots who have signed up to join the ''Lost Light'': [[Brainstorm]], carrying a mysterious briefcase but exempted from security checks by Rodimus; [[Swerve (G1)|Swerve]], in the mood for "a good quest"; and [[Rung]], whom Red Alert does not recognize at first, despite having been a patient of his for six centuries. Rung tempts fate by commenting on his knack for staying out of trouble: before the sentence is even finished, Cyclonus and Whirl's running battle swoops through the area, and Rung winds up with his forearm cleaved off by Cyclonus's wing.

Ratchet, Chromedome and Rewind, meanwhile, are making for the ''Lost Light'', but are running behind schedule due to Rewind's lack of a vehicular [[alternate mode]], a trait of his that Chromedome has never understood. Just as the group are about to start having an argument about the validity of alt mode variety, Cyclonus and Whirl come crashing down out of the sky, their battle at an end with Whirl the victor. Whirl spins a few quick lies and is about to deliver a killshot when a sudden, unexpected energon explosion from beneath the ground blows him to bits. Peering into the blast crater, the Autobots find [[Tailgate (G1)|Tailgate]], who, unbeknownst to them, is an Autobot from six million years ago who was supposed to be on the ''[[Ark (G1)#IDW Generation 1 comics|Ark I]]'', but became trapped underground in a subsidence. He has spent the past six thousand millennia periodically going offline and reawakening, unaware that any time has passed, until he was just now finally able to detonate the energon rations he had with him in bid for freedom. Panicking and passing out before he can tell the Autobots any of this due to his belief he has killed Whirl, Tailgate is brought aboard the ''Lost Light'' by the other Autobots, as are Whirl and Cylconus. Rewind takes advantage of the brief confusion to slip off and purchase some golden discs from [[Swindle (G1)|Swindle]].

Soon after, the ''Lost Light'' takes off, but is immediately crippled by an explosion that forces the ship to [[quantum jump]] before preparation is complete, hurling it off to some far corner of the galaxy. A fifth of the ship's crew is sucked out into space before the breached hull repairs itself, and Rodimus orders them to set down on a desolate nearby planet, where they watch as the Autobots come raining down, burning up as they enter the atmosphere. All in all, as Rodimus succinctly puts it: "Not a good start."

And back on Cyberton, in Prowl's quarters, a scrambled transmission plays. A transmission from one of the ''Lost Light''<nowiki>'</nowiki>'s crew. A transmission that has been sent back in time, from the future. But it has arrived too late, and now Rodimus will never hear the warnings of the dangers that await them...

"Did he give you all that scrap about finding the Knights of Cybertron and retracing our steps to the Golden Age? <font size = "1">It's all scripted, you know, Drift writes it for him."</font>
:—'''Bumblebee''''s not bitter!

"You know what '''your''' problem is, Chromedome? You think that just because the war is '''over''', we can afford to stop '''fighting'''!"
:—'''Prowl''', summed up in one sentence.

"'''Please''' tell me you're here to wave us off."<br>
"No, no, no, I'm here for the quest. Love a good quest. Haven't been on a quest since the whole Luna 1 thing. The Moonquest."<br>
"Stop saying 'quest.'"<br>
"So, can I go on board?"<br>
"Of course—if you promise to never, ever speak."
:—'''Red Alert''' and '''Swerve''' evidently have a history.

"Oh, it's started. The alt mode bashing. Every time you get '''agitated'''... Let's have a go at Rewind because he turns into a '''giant memory stick''' and not a... '''super space tank''' or—or—whatever..."
:—'''Rewind''', on the defensive.

"Remember the old saying? 'Everyone's shape serves a purpose.'"<br>
"Yeah? Tell that to Sky Lynx."
:—'''Rewind''' and '''Ratchet''' have a difference of opinion.

==Notes==
*The title of this issue pays homage to the Dexys Midnight Runners' song, "Liars, A to E" (with A and D of course standing for "Autobot" and "Decepticon"). James Roberts previously used it as the title for a comic-strip prequel to his unofficial Transformers novel, "Eugenesis", published in the souvenir magazine for UK convention Transforce 2001
*The trailer Tailgate is carrying his energon rations in is a [[Micro Trailer]].
*Brainstorm's mysterious briefcase was [[Malevolent Counterintuitive Pathogen|previously mentioned]] in "[[Bullets]]", as was Rung's fondness for model spacecraft.
*Brainstorm's security pass sports a [[Tech Spec]]s graph and a [[rubsign]].
*The release of this issue was preceded by a "scavenger hunt" of sorts on January 10th, with one each of a series of twelve images spotlighting individual characters being released to twelve different websites, both Transformers fansites and popular comic book new sites. '''When Arcee takes Jack on a routine mission, Airachnid turns up, putting him in danger.'''

==Synopsis==
A mysterious object streaks through the [[Solar System]] and crashes in a remote part of the northern [[United States of America|United States]]. Trudging through the forest nearby are [[Arcee (Prime)|Arcee]] and [[Jack Darby]], out searching for an underground [[energon (fuel)|energon]] deposit that [[Ratchet (Prime)|Ratchet]] has detected. Jack complains about the mosquitoes, but Arcee picks up some strange readings and they quickly come upon the crashed spaceship. Telling an increasingly unnerved Jack to stay where he is, Arcee moves in closer to examine it, and suffers a flashback containing a [[Airachnid|menacing figure]] as she realizes whose ship it is. She attempts in vain to contact [[Autobot Outpost Omega One|base]] to request a [[GroundBridge]]. Leaving Jack by the ship, Arcee walks out into the trees to find a trail left by her mystery assailant, and again flashes back to a past time when she had been captured. Jack interrupts her, and she transforms before driving them both at high speed through the trees for a distance. When she still can't contact base, she drops Jack off on the other side of a deep crevasse and heads back. Jack starts climbing down the side of the crevasse. Arcee, scouting among the trees, finds a tree stump covered in an acidic compound, and has another flashback.

[[Image:Predatory-Airachnidscratch.jpg|thumb|250px|left|]]

''On [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], Arcee runs through ruined buildings while radioing [[Delta Team]] for backup. She trades banter with her partner [[Tailgate (Prime)|Tailgate]] before asking directions, but before she can complete her next sentence, she's stuck to a nearby wall by a glob of webbing. She finds herself chained up, a prisoner of [[Airachnid]], who scratches her face with an acid-emitting talon.''

Elsewhere, Airachnid moves in on an unsuspecting camper in a tent. As she jumps to strike, she's tackled by Arcee, and the pair roll downhill to a clearing. Amused to be reunited with the Autobot after all this time, Airachnid reveals her new hobby: collecting the heads of endangered species, though most of them weren't endangered until she got to them. Now she has her sights set on a human for her next trophy. Enraged, Arcee begins fighting her, but Jack arrives, distracting Arcee long enough for Airachnid to web her to a nearby rock. Arcee cuts her arm free and zaps Airachnid before informing Jack that he's more a liability than a partner. Jack responds that he doesn't believe her and he can tell she's afraid, and Arcee flashes back again.

''Finding Arcee a tough nut to crack, Airachnid has a couple of [[Vehicon (Prime)|Vehicons]] drag in a severly battered Tailgate, and demands the information she wants, or Tailgate dies. Arcee, however much she wants to save her partner, doesn't know the attack coordinates, and Airachnid calmly kills him.''

Airachnid recovers from the battle and closes in and says she'd heard about [[Cliffjumper (Prime)|Cliffjumper]]'s fate, then twists the knife by asking Arcee if she has a problem with losing partners. As Jack flees, Airachnid promises to finish Arcee later, after she's added her human companion's head to her trophy collection. As Airachnid leaves, Arcee flashes back once more...

[[Image:Predatory-ArceeBeeCliff.jpg|thumb|250px|Color coded for your sake.]]

''As Airachnid moves in on her living prisoner, [[Bumblebee (Prime)|Bumblebee]] and [[Cliffjumper (Prime)|Cliffjumper]] burst in to execute a dramatic rescue. Though they gun down the Vehicon guards, Airachnid makes her escape. The Autobots free Arcee and carry her out as she laments that she couldn't save her partner.''

Arcee is overcome with grief at having put Jack's life in peril, realizing that she should have just... kept... driving! Her lament gives her the insight she needs to free herself, pulling at the webbing enough to transform to cycle mode and peel out at full throttle, eventually breaking her bonds.

Meanwhile, Jack ducks behind a fallen tree in an attempt to evade Airachnid, but she easily finds him. He continues running, and though he's scared, keeps looking for ways to fight back (though he quickly dismisses his Swiss Army knife as a viable weapon). Eventually, he reaches Airachnid's ship and hides against it as she enters, believing him to have snuck inside. While clambering through the trench left by the ship's landing, he finds a puddle of [[energon (fuel)|energon]] leaking from a port on its underside. Grabbing a nearby stick, he uses his pocket knife and flint to set fire to it, then throws it into the leaking port. Airachnid, now standing on top of the ship, yells his name as the ship explodes.

Jack is thrown clear, but just as he's beginning to relax, a still-burning Airachnid pins him to a nearby tree with webbing. She moves in, ready for the kill, but Arcee comes barreling through the trees and beats her with feet and fists, finally sending the Decepticon flying through the forest, creating her own trail of debris. Arcee cuts down Jack, but then they hear the sound of drilling, and find Airachnid has burrowed into the ground and escaped.

Arcee says she admires Jack's bravery, and as she radios base for a GroundBridge, saying she needs to get her ''partner'' back to safety. As Jack notices the choice of words, Arcee quips that he's still the ''junior'' partner in this team.
*This episode contains four or five possible references to the ''[[Predator (alien)|Predator]]'' franchise: Airachnid's ship entering Earth's atmosphere resembles the movie's opening scene, Airachnid coming to Earth with the sole purpose of hunting humans echoes the Predator's motive, Airachnid's trophy case of heads is similar to one seen in ''Predator 2'', and the scene in which Jack uses a personally made flaming "arrow" to ignite energon resembles a tactic used by Arnold Schwarzenegger's character Dutch in the first film. The title "Predatory" may also be just as much a reference to ''Predator'' as it is to [[Predacon (disambiguation)|Predacon]]s.

Long ago, '''Airachnid''' was with the [[Decepticon]]s, where her cruel, cold-sparked, murderous demeanor served her well. But after the [[Great Exodus]] of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], she decided to go solo.

These days, Airachnid spends her time engaging in her new hobby: collecting [[Airachnid's specimens|endangered species]]. Well, parts of endangered species. Mostly the heads.

And if a species ''isn't'' endangered? Oh, they will be. She'll make ''sure'' of that. And she'll make sure it's a slow, painful process.
{{spoiler|Predatory|April 30, 2011}}

During the war for Cybertron, Airachnid managed to capture [[Arcee (Prime)|Arcee]] and her partner [[Tailgate (Prime)|Tailgate]]. Quickly realizing that Arcee would resist the physical torture she used, Airachnid decided to employ a simpler threat: Tell her the attack coordinates, or Tailgate dies. Arcee insisted she didn't know the coordinates, but Airachnid didn't believe her and killed Tailgate. Moments later, [[Bumblebee (Prime)|Bumblebee]] and [[Cliffjumper (Prime)|Cliffjumper]] burst into the holding room, killing the two [[Vehicon (Prime)|Vehicon]]s and rescuing Arcee. Airachnid, however, fled.

Following the [[Great Exodus]], Airachnid concluded that the war was over, meaning she needed a new way to spend her time. She decided to hunt sentient species, then wipe them out after getting a trophy. Eventually, Airachnid crash-landed [[Airachnid's ship|her ship]] on [[Earth]]. She initially laid her optics on a lone camper, but was ambushed by Arcee. While Arcee gained the upper hand, she was distracted by her human partner, [[Jack Darby]], and Airachnid webbed her to a rock. Having learned of Cliffjumper's recent demise, Airachnid decided that making Jack her next trophy would be a delicious way to hurt Arcee before finally snuffing out her [[spark]]. She chased Jack back to her ship, but discovered too late that the human had snuck out the underside. She spotted Jack ''just'' in time to see him hurl a flaming stick into a pool of [[Energon (fuel)|energon]] that was leaking from her ship. Airachnid barely managed to escape the explosion, but she was wounded and ''really'' pissed. She managed to web the fleeing Jack to a tree, but before Airachnid could deliver the killing blow, Arcee came to the rescue and absolutely wiped the forest floor with the Decepticon. Deciding she had endured enough for one night, Airachnid drilled into the ground and fled. {{storylink|Predatory}}

==Notes==
* Airachnid is in [[Generation 1]] non-Deluxe [[Insecticon (G1)|Insecticon]] colors.
* Airachnid went her entire introductory episode without transforming into a true [[alternate mode]], only from biped-mode to spider-legs mode and back.
* Unlike real spiders, Airachnid has [[wikipedia:compound eyes|compound eyes]].
* The existence of the name "Airachnid" was first revealed when Hasbro filed an intent-to-use [http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=serial&entry=77892423 trademark application] for the term with the US Trademark and Patent Office. However, the application was eventually denied for registration.<ref>[http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/beast-wars-2/case-closed---goodbye-airachnid-170451/ "Case Closed - Goodbye Airachnid"]</ref> so whether Hasbro will still use the name for the toy is unknown.
* She is not [[Blackarachnia (disambiguation)|Blackarachnia]]. Deal with it.
* Intended or not, her head design seems to have quite a lot of similarities with the Disney's 1959 ''Sleeping Beauty'' villainess [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maleficent Maleficent].
Following the defeat of [[Sentinel Zeta Prime|Zeta Prime]] in the [[Iacon (city-state)|Iacon]] Vaults, the [[Autobot]] leader was transferred to [[Kaon]] prison facility where he was tortured by Soundwave. In the hopes of luring [[Optimus Prime (Prime)|Optimus]] to Kaon, [[Megatron (Prime)|Megatron]] and Soundwave orchestrated events that allowed Zeta Prime to send a message to the Autobots revealing of his survival. Even though the Autobots recognized it for the trap it was, Optimus nevertheless led [[Bumblebee (Prime)|Bumblebee]] and [[Sideswipe (Prime)|Sidewipe]] allowing themselves to be captured and briefly imprisoned. They broke free, releasing all of the other Autobots in the prison and fought their way to Soundwave's laboratory. Soundwave protected himself behind an impenetrable forcefield and unleashed Rumble, [[Frenzy (Prime)|Frenzy]], and [[Laserbeak (Prime)|Laserbeak]] upon the Autobots. Any attempt by Optimus and his team to free Zeta was met with a gleeful attack by Rumble and his compatriots. However, when they received damage, Soundwave was forced to leave his protective shield to administer repairs, leaving him open to attack. Eventually, Soundwave and his minions were soon overwhelmed and had to retreat but not before mortally wounding Zeta Prime. {{storylink|Transformers: War for Cybertron (360/PS3/PC)|Transformers: War for Cybertron}}
[[Image:WFC Rumble intro.jpg|thumb|right|250px|Look everyone; no hands!]]
As a loyal Mini-Con warrior under [[Soundwave (Prime)|Soundwave]]'s command, '''Rumble''' loves using his quake-producing armament to shake up the opposition. Though he is most often found by the side (or rather, ''inside'') of his powerful commander, Rumble can be a surprisingly effective warrior on his own, throwing even warriors like [[Sideswipe (Prime)|Sideswipe]] and [[Optimus Prime (Prime)#War for Cybertron video game|Optimus]] for a tumble!
