Following the exile of the [[Quintesson]]s from [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], the two races of robots that they had created, the [[Autobot]]s and the [[Decepticon]]s, went to war with each other. Although physically weaker, the Autobots claimed victory thanks to their development of a new ability: the art of [[transformation|transforming]]. The Autobots' victory began the [[Golden Age]] of Cybertron, but all was not well within this seeming paradise. After many centuries of Autobot rule, the Decepticons developed transformation as well, along with new robot-mode flight powers, leading to the creation of Megatron. {{storylink|Five Faces of Darkness, Part 4}}

Megatron quickly gathered a small group of like-minded warriors together beneath him, and he began his mission to restore the Decepticons to glory and overthrow the Autobots. In these early, shadowy days, Megatron is known to have attacked the outer cities, {{storylink|War Dawn}} and was responsible for the death of the current [[Sentinel Prime (G1)|Autobot leader]]. {{storylink|Five Faces of Darkness, Part 4}} Using a device called the [[Robo-Smasher]] to reprogram Autobots and Decepticons permanently into servitude of his cause, Megatron swelled the Decepticons' ranks into a true army. For whatever reason, the aggressive actions of Megatron and the Decepticons were not made public knowledge, and young robots like the naive [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Orion Pax]] still looked up to Megatron and his followers because of their flight powers. However, Pax soon learned the error of his ways when Megatron approached him about the possibility of using one of the local warehouses for storage, only to turn on Pax once he had gained access to the energy stored within the facility. Megatron fatally injured Orion in a scuffle and left the young robot to die while he set about pillaging and battling the [[guardian robot]]s who arrived to quash his uprising. Unbeknownst to Megatron, thanks to the actions of the time-displaced [[Aerialbot (G1)|Aerialbots]], Orion was rebuilt by [[Alpha Trion (G1)|Alpha Trion]] into a new configuration that could truly stand up to Megatron's power—now, he was [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Optimus Prime]]. Prime and Megatron proceeded to face off on the battlefield for the first time, and, as Megatron's [[fusion cannon]] blasts splashed harmlessly off Prime's armor, the new Autobot leader declared himself Megatron's worst nightmare. {{storylink|War Dawn}}

Under Megatron's leadership, the Decepticons conquered a large portion of Cybertron, but the war drained the planet of most of its energy. Learning that the Autobots were planning a space voyage to search for new worlds and new sources of power, Megatron appointed [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] guardian of Cybertron in his absence while he and his elite forces–including the treacherous [[Starscream (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Starscream]], who considered Megatron a relic and sought leadership of the Decepticons for himself, and Megatron's most loyal subordinate, [[Soundwave (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Soundwave]]—boarded a [[Nemesis (G1)|space cruiser]] to pursue the Autobots' own [[Ark (G1)|craft]]. After navigating a treacherous meteor shower, the Decepticons attacked and boarded the Autobot craft, but during the battle that ensued, the ship was caught in the g-forces of the nearby planet [[Earth]] and crashed there, knocking all its occupants offline.

Four million years later, in 1984, the eruption of the volcano into which the ship had crashed jarred the ship's computer, [[Teletraan I (G1)|Teletraan I]], back online. The computer restored the Decepticon [[Skywarp (G1)|Skywarp]] to life, and he immediately dragged Megatron into Teletraan's reconfiguration beam. Within moments, the Decepticon leader was restored, now outfitted with an Earthly [[alternate mode]] in the form of a Walther P.38 pistol, and he quickly set about reviving the rest of his troops. Realizing that they were on a planet far from Cybertron, Megatron immediately made plans to gather energy from Earth's resources and build a [[Victory (G1)|new space cruiser]] so they could return home... and perhaps he would have succeeded in this goal, if the Autobots had not been there to stop him. Unfortunately, Starscream proved petty enough to fire a few parting shots at the buried Autobot spacecraft as the Decepticons were leaving, causing a tremor that jostled Optimus Prime's body into the path of Teletraan I's beam. Thus, Optimus Prime was revived and the rest of the Autobots soon followed, and the war continued on Earth.

For their first strike, Megatron led the Decepticons to an offshore oil rig. The Autobots followed, and Prime and Megatron found themselves in battle once again, but Megatron soon broke off the fight and covered his escape by collapsing the rig with a blast from his cannon. {{storylink|More than Meets the Eye, Part 1}} Next, Megatron chose to attack [[Sherman Dam]], atop which he battled Optimus Prime with his [[energon mace]]. After pillaging another clutch of energy from the [[ruby crystal mines of Burma]], Megatron made preparations to attack a rocket base to acquire the last of the energy needed. Starscream took the opportunity to grouse about his leadership once more, and in a rather foolish move, attempted to shoot Megatron in the back. Responding to Soundwave's shout of warning, Megatron blocked the beam with a force field and returned fire, bringing Starscream to his knees. The following morning, the Decepticons attacked a [[Cape Carlson|rocket base]], successfully foiling an attempt by the Autobots to dupe them with a holographic illusion, and obtained the required energy. The Autobots launched one final attack on the Decepticons before the villains could escape, during which Megatron faced the firepower of Prime's [[Combat Deck (G1)|Combat Deck]], but ultimately, the Decepticons made it to their cruiser and blasted off. Once airborne, Starscream challenged Megatron for leadership once again, and Megatron was fully prepared to take on the traitor...until the Autobot stowaway [[Mirage (G1)|Mirage]] used the fight as a distraction to sabotage the ship and send it crashing back to Earth, where it submerged itself in the ocean. {{storylink|More than Meets the Eye, Part 3}}

Although the Autobots believed the Decepticons deceased, in reality, Megatron and his forces had survived, and in the intervening months, they repurposed the hulk of their spaceship as a sub-oceanic [[Decepticon Headquarters (G1 Earth)|headquarters]]. Megatron re-established contact with Shockwave on Cybertron, arranging for the joint construction of a new intergalactic transport system called a "[[space bridge]]". After revealing his continued existence to the Autobots in an attack on a solar power plant, Megatron captured Spike Witwicky for use in the first test of the space bridge and reprogrammed Spike's Autobot friend [[Bumblebee (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Bumblebee]], causing the little Autobot to lure his comrades into an ambush. Despite his carefully-laid plans, everything backfired for Megatron when the Autobots disrupted the test and he was inadvertently sucked through the space bridge. {{storylink|Transport to Oblivion}}

While a lesser being might have been destroyed by the voyage, Megatron survived and re-materialized on Cybertron. He quickly had Shockwave send him back to Earth, where he led the Decepticons in stealing an [[antimatter]] formula from the scientist [[Alcazar|Doctor Alcazar]] and his student, [[Chip Chase]]. Using the formula, Megatron created antimatter cubes that he used to power himself, transforming his pistol mode into a devastating "antimatter gun". Regrettably, the plan was short-lived: During the ensuing battle, the antimatter reached ignition temperature, and he was forced to dispose of it and flee. {{storylink|Roll for It}}

When Optimus Prime was badly wounded in a battle with the Decepticon jets, a group of Autobots travelled to Cybertron to secure a replacement part to save him, prompting Megatron to order the [[Rainmaker]]s into battle to stop them with [[acid rain]]. Thinking this tactic a success, Megatron launched a major attack on [[Ark (G1)|Autobot Headquarters]], but the Autobots returned from Cybertron in time to repair Prime, who thrashed Megatron soundly in one-on-one combat. {{storylink|Divide and Conquer}}

Megatron's scheme to drain heat energy from Earth's core was foiled by the Decepticon-turned-Autobot [[Jetfire (G1)|Skyfire]], {{storylink|Fire in the Sky}} after which his attack on the [[Great Falls]] hydroelectric power plant was squashed by the powerful, newly created [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobots]]. {{storylink|S.O.S. Dinobots}} His attempt to use the [[Crystal of Power]] as a weapon met with similar success, {{storylink|Fire on the Mountain}} so Megatron turned his attentions back to the Dinobots, using his charisma to confuse their simple minds and turn them against the Autobots. While the Dinobots were busy battling Optimus Prime, Megatron and the Decepticons stole an [[Meteorini Chipperoni|unstable meteorite]] and began draining its energy, but the meteor soon exploded, denying Megatron another success. {{storylink|War of the Dinobots}}

Megatron's next plan was his grandest yet, as he allied himself with the human scientist [[Doctor Arkeville]] for his mind-controlling [[hypno-chip]]s and constructed a colossal space bridge design to teleport Cybertron itself into Earth's orbit. Prime engaged Megatron in battle just before the Decepticon leader could activate the final pylon of the space bridge, but victory in this battle was Megatron's, as he revealed his scheme to Prime, forcing Optimus to activate the pylon himself or cause Cybertron's destruction. {{storylink|The Ultimate Doom, Part 1}} Megatron's forces and mind-controlled human slaves set about gathering the energy generated by the catastrophic forces unleashed by Cybertron's arrival, {{storylink|The Ultimate Doom, Part 2}} until eventually, a huge transport full of energy cubes was ready. As Megatron personally flew the ship to Cybertron, but the Autobots opened fire on it, detonating the energon cubes and causing an explosion large enough to force Cybertron out of orbit, saving Earth. Megatron proved his preternatural durability yet again by surviving the blast, {{storylink|The Ultimate Doom, Part 3}} and he quickly returned to Earth, only to discover that Starscream and Doctor Arkeville had formed an alliance.

To stop Starscream's plan to use an [[Exponential Generator]] to destroy the Earth, Megatron was forced to team up with Optimus Prime, transforming into pistol mode so that Prime could use him to fire the generator into space. When the generator exploded, it knocked the passing Starscream out the sky, and he crashed right at the vengeful Megatron's feet. {{storylink|Countdown to Extinction (episode)|Countdown to Extinction}}

Whatever revenge Megatron reaped upon Starscream, it was enough to put the Air Commander out of commission for the Decepticons' next mission to [[Bali]], where Megatron formed a partnership with a trio of Decepticon "[[Insecticon (G1)|Insecticons]]" that had been living there. When an Autobot attack foiled their attempt to steal energy from an oil tanker, however, Megatron cut his losses and ordered the Decepticons to retreat with what energon cubes they had acquired, earning him the Insecticons' enmity. {{storylink|A Plague of Insecticons}}

After the Decepticon forces were bolstered by the addition of the Constructicons, Megatron put the builders' skills to use constructing a device that would transfer the other Decepticons' powers into him. With these additional abilities in place, Megatron challenged Optimus Prime to a one-on-one duel according to Cybertronian law, in which the loser would be exiled from Earth forever. The law, however, dictated that combatants had to fight without additional reinforcement, so to hide the nature of his new powers, Megatron dispatched the Constructicons to destroy Teletraan I, so that the computer would be unable to scan him and realise his broach of the rules. Using the powers of his Decepticons, Megatron easily defeated Optimus Prime, but the Constructicons' were foiled in their mission by the Dinobots, and Megatron's deception stood revealed. Faced with a furious Optimus Prime, Megatron was hurled into a river of lava, but as the Autobots departed, his charred form bobbed to the surface, and he vowed the Decepticons would rise again. {{storylink|Heavy Metal War}}

During a raid on an Air Force rocket base in 1985, Megatron covered the Decepticons' retreat by opening fire on Bumblebee and Spike, badly wounding the young human. While his body was being operated upon, Spike's mind was transferred into the Frankenstein-like body of "[[Autobot X]]", and Megatron was able to exploit the youth's resulting addled state and turn him against the Autobots, even allowing Spike to wield him in pistol mode. Unfortunately for Megatron, Spike got a hold of himself and turned Megatron's power on the other Decepticons, winning the day. {{storylink|Autobot Spike}}

After attempts to drain energy from the Earth's sun with his new [[Solar Needle]] {{storylink|Changing Gears}} and to conquer [[New York City]] and transform it into "[[New Cybertron]]", {{storylink|City of Steel}} Megatron decided to hit the Autobots where they lived, using [[invisibility spray]] to sneak into Autobot Headquarters and plant a [[personality destabilizer device]] in Teletraan I's recharging systems. The device turned the Autobots into rampaging brutes, and while they were busy causing destruction, Megatron led the Decepticons in hijacking a solar satellite, only to be foiled at the last second when the Autobots were restored to their right minds. {{storylink|Attack of the Autobots}}

Wild and wonderful technology formed the basis of Megatron's next few schemes, as he formed another unstable alliance with the Insecticons to appropriate human-made [[electro-cell]]s, {{storylink|Traitor}} attempted to steal Wheeljack's new paralyzing [[Wheeljack Instant Immobilizer|Immobilizer]] weapon, {{storylink|The Immobilizer}} and had the Constructicons build the [[Transfixatron]], a device which froze the Autobots in their vehicle modes. {{storylink|The Autobot Run}} When these plans met with failure, Megatron teamed up with King [[Nergill]] of the undersea fish-race of [[Sub-Atlantica]] and tried to conquer [[Washington, D.C.]] Megatron felt right at home sitting in a "throne" made from the [[Abraham Lincoln|Lincoln Memorial]], but the plan fell apart when the insane Nergill betrayed Megatron. {{storylink|Atlantis, Arise!}}

Despite the failure of his plan to manipulate the Earth computer [[TORQ III]], {{storylink|Day of the Machines}} Megatron stuck to his guns and tried controlling Earth technology again, stealing the human-made robot ninja [[Nightbird (G1)|Nightbird]] and unleashing it upon the Autobots. Megatron was full of praise for Nightbird, describing "her" as "all he had ever wanted", and dubbed her "hot enough" to replace Starscream if he so chose. Threatened by this prospect, Starscream helped the Autobots defeat Nightbird. Needless to say, Megatron was not pleased. {{storylink|Enter the Nightbird}}

For his next plan, Megatron got very hands-on, creating a perfect [[Optimus Prime clone|clone]] of Optimus Prime that he controlled personally via a special helmet. Despite Megatron's inability to operate Teletraan I or even get the Autobots' names right, Prime's comrades failed to tell the difference between the clone and the genuine article. It was only when Megatron dismissed the safety of Spike during a battle for control of a crevasse of [[korlonium crystal]]s that his trickery was revealed and the clone was destroyed. {{storylink|A Prime Problem}}

Megatron's next run of plans went especially badly for the Decepticon leader. Another attempt to harness the power of the Earth's core nearly destroyed the planet, necessitating a team-up with the Autobots to save the world, {{storylink|The Core}} while another failed alliance with the Insecticons also led to a team-up, as Megatron was forced once again to allow Optimus Prime to wield him in pistol mode, so that he could shoot capsules into the over-energized Insecticons in order to bring them under control. {{storylink|The Insecticon Syndrome}} No alliance resulted from Megatron's attempt to harness the energies of the time-lost [[Dinobot Island (G1)|Dinobot Island]], {{storylink|Dinobot Island, Part 1}} but his scheme nearly tore apart the fabric of space and time, until the Dinobots and the island's native dinosaurs stopped him. {{storylink|Dinobot Island, Part 2}}

Next, Megatron tried stealing Autobot technology, going after [[Grapple]]'s [[Solar Power Tower]] {{storylink|The Master Builders}} and the [[Negavator]], {{storylink|Auto Berserk}} but failure on both accounts led him to try and rediscover a piece of lost technology, rather than steal a new one. Venturing into the jungles of [[South America]], Megatron and the Decepticons uncovered the ruins of the space cruiser that had brought them to Earth, and Megatron had its power core, the [[Heart of Cybertron]], installed within his body. Now bestowed with incredible energy-blasting powers, Megatron would have destroyed the Autobots, had Bumblebee, [[Brawn (G1)|Brawn]] and [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]] not shrunk themselves to microscopic size and ventured inside his body to disconnect the Heart of Cybertron. {{storylink|Microbots}}

Seeking to exploit the gullibility of humankind, Megatron entered into a partnership with the human politician [[Shawn Berger]], promising him control of [[Central City (Earth)|Central City]] if he would help Megatron "expose" the Autobots for the villains they truly were. Megatron tricked Berger into believing the Autobots had ransacked an oil field by disguising the Decepticons with costumes, and the tape "proving" the Autobots' evil deeds was unveiled to the public. Found guilty in a court of law, the Autobots were exiled from Earth, and Megatron secretly reprogrammed their ship's navigation computer to send them not back to Cybertron, but into the heart of the Sun. {{storylink|Megatron's Master Plan, Part 1}} Megatron played nice for a little while, joining in a parade and a television interview, but it was during the latter that he revealed his deception and announced his intention to conquer the planet. The Decepticons' attempt to steal [[Greene|Professor Greene]]'s [[Ultra Plane]] was foiled by depletion of their [[cybertonium]], which robbed Megatron of his ability to fly and shoot straight. {{storylink|Desertion of the Dinobots, Part 1}} Megatron was not pleased to hear that Shockwave's attempts to transport some fresh cybertonium from Cybertron were stymied by Spike and his girlfriend [[Carly]]. {{storylink|Desertion of the Dinobots, Part 2}} Once he was fully functional again, Megatron stole the [[Voltronic Galaxer]] and used it to disrupt communications signals all across Earth from a [[Decepticon moonbase|base on the Moon]]. Holding the world to ransom for energy in exchange for clear lines of communication, Megatron was ultimately defeated in a battle with Optimus Prime on the [[Moon (moon)|Moon]]'s surface. {{storylink|Blaster Blues}}

Megatron next led the Decepticons in a mission to [[United Kingdom|Britain]], {{storylink|A Decepticon Raider in King Arthur's Court}} after which he briefly gained the power of an [[electrum]] coating {{storylink|The Golden Lagoon}} and then turned his attention back to New York City, allying with the criminal [[Geddis brothers]] in order to make drone warriors out of the cars their crime ring stole. {{storylink|Make Tracks}} Later, an attempt to create a new space bridge in a baseball stadium went awry when Megatron accidentally blasted the bridge's controls, creating a disruption that transported several Autobots and Decepticons to a planet of alien giants. {{storylink|Child's Play (episode)|Child's Play}} Megatron was lucky enough to escape this fate, and once his followers had returned, he unleashed a series of schemes against the Autobots that saw them pitted against alien creatures like the [[Morphobot]]s {{storylink|Quest for Survival}} and a [[asteroid bird alien|creature from the heart of an asteroid]]. {{storylink|The Secret of Omega Supreme}}

While conducting an experiment of his own, Megatron inadvertently wound up creating the demented energy imp known as [[Kremzeek]]. Megatron released Kremzeek into the Autobot base so that he could cause havoc, keeping the Autobots occupied while he tested the Decepticons' new [[energy magnet]] off the coast of [[Japan]]. However, Megatron had not anticipated that Kremzeek would follow him to Japan and wind up destroying their operation there. {{storylink|Kremzeek!}}

After a mission to the planet of the [[Tlalakan]]s at the behest of the neurotic Decepticon computer [[Deceptitran]], {{storylink|Sea Change}} Megatron fell victim to betrayal by Starscream, [[Astrotrain (G1)|Astrotrain]] and [[Blitzwing (G1)|Blitzwing]], and was frozen solid in a subterranean chamber by absolute zero degree molecules. As luck would have it, the chaos caused by the trio's attempts to take control of the Decepticons caused a flash flood that destroyed the chamber and freed Megatron, and he took on all comers to retake his leadership position. {{storylink|Triple Takeover}}

Megatron then took a step back from the front lines for a while, delegating Astrotrain and Blitzwing to make contact with the big game hunter [[Chumley|Lord Chumley]], {{storylink|Prime Target (episode)|Prime Target}} placing Starscream in charge of missions to hypnotise humans with the [[Dancitron]] nightclub {{storylink|Auto-Bop}} and to capture [[Elita One]] on Cybertron, {{storylink|The Search for Alpha Trion}} and appointing [[Thrust (G1)|Thrust]], [[Dirge (G1)|Dirge]] and [[Ramjet (G1)|Ramjet]] to capture [[Astoria Carlton-Ritz]]. {{storylink|The Girl Who Loved Powerglide}} Megatron got proactive again when a movie studio captured footage of Dirge crash-landing in their back lot while carrying a secret cargo. Starscream's failure to recover the negatives of the footage enraged Megatron to such an extent that he slammed the Air Commander off a wall and tore wires out of his chest, knocking him offline. Megatron was tricked into believing the negative had been destroyed by [[Hoist (G1)|Hoist]], but as it turned out, the "secret cargo" was totally worthless anyway! {{storylink|Hoist Goes Hollywood}}

Seeking to challenge the Autobots' rule of the road, Megatron created the [[Stunticon (G1)|Stunticons]] and brought them to Cybertron so that [[Vector Sigma]] could bring them to life. Stealing the mega-computer's key from [[Alpha Trion (G1)|Alpha Trion]], Megatron succeeded in his goal, {{storylink|The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 1}} and upon returning to Earth with the key, discovered that it possessed the additional power to de-energize matter and turn it into metal. Cutting a swathe through the [[Seattle]]-Tacoma area with the key, Megatron sought to transform Earth into a new Cybertron, but he was stopped by the Autobots' newest members, the [[Aerialbot (G1)|Aerialbots]]. {{storylink|The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 2}}

Megatron soon sought to dispose of the Aerialbots by sending them back to the dawn of time using the [[Kronosphere]] time machine, but an Autobot attack disrupted the process, and the Aerialbots wound up on Cybertron nine million years in the past. There, they saved Orion Pax from dying at Megatron's hands, making Megatron–who was the reason for the Aerialbots being sent back in time–unwittingly responsible for the creation of his greatest enemy. {{storylink|War Dawn}}

Coercing the aid of [[Abdul Ben Faisal]] and [[Teranova|Professor Teranova]], Megatron located the weather-controlling [[Pearl of Bahoudin]] and arranged the [[Europa 2000]] so that he could obtain the experimental metal of [[Auggie Cahnay (G1)|Auggie Cahnay]]'s car and use it to contain the pearl's power. An Autobot attack caused Megatron to lose control of the pearl, and he fled the massive storm that resulted. {{storylink|Trans-Europe Express}}

While investigating the planet [[Antilla]], Megatron discovered a new "[[Lightning Bug]]" weapon, but also fell victim to the deadly disease [[Cosmic Rust (disease)|Cosmic Rust]]. Autobot scientist Perceptor was captured and brought to Decepticon Headquarters to diagnose him, and he offered a cure in the form of his newest invention, [[Corrostop]]. With the Decepticons protected by Corrostop, Megatron unleashed Cosmic Rust upon the Autobots, exacerbating its effects with the Lightning Bug. After another failed coup by Starscream, Megatron reached the end of his rope and dismissed the traitor from the Decepticon ranks. When news then came in from Shockwave that the [[personality component]]s of the political dissidents known as the "[[Renegade Decepticon]]s" had been freed from imprisonment on Cybertron, Megatron suspected the Autobots were responsible, but he soon learned that Starscream had done the deed and used the components to create an army of his own, the [[Combaticon (G1)|Combaticons]]. Megatron could not stand up to the power of the Combaticons' combined form of [[Bruticus (G1)|Bruticus]], and he was forced to hand power over to Starscream...just before [[Menasor (G1)|Menasor]] blindsided Bruticus and saved Megatron at the last minute. Megatron exiled Starscream and the Combaticons to an asteroid in space, {{storylink|Starscream's Brigade}} but this merely made things worse, as the Combaticons towed the asteroid to Cybertron and took over the planet. While supervising an Insecticon rampage on Earth, Megatron received a communication from Starscream informing him that the Combaticons had rewired the space bridge and were using it to hurl the Earth into the Sun. Once again, Megatron and Optimus Prime were forced to join forces to stop the Combaticons, but first, both leaders had to donate some of their own parts to repair the damaged space bridge control panel. After a pitched battle on Cybertron, Bruticus was defeated, and Optimus Prime believed he witnessed Megatron destroying the giant warrior with a blast from his fusion cannon. In truth, the whole scene had been a holographic illusion masterminded by Starscream, who gave Megatron the defeated Bruticus's body. Planning to reprogram the Combaticons to be loyal to him, Megatron welcomed Starscream back into the Decepticon ranks as reward for his efforts. {{storylink|The Revenge of Bruticus}}

Megatron's final recorded schemes in the twentieth century were some of his most outlandish yet, as he used armies of drone planes and a fortress in the shape of a [[Giant Purple Griffin]] to pillage the oil fields of the Middle East, {{storylink|Aerial Assault}} created a giant laser out of a ruby, {{storylink|Masquerade}} and planned to blast the Moon out of orbit so he could control the tides of the Earth and... flood one single canyon. {{storylink|B.O.T. (episode)|B.O.T.}}

Over the course of the next twenty years, Megatron turned his attention away from Earth and succeeded in conquering the entirety of Cybertron. The Autobots were forced off the planet and founded [[Autobot City]] on Earth, in addition to two staging bases on Cybertron's moons. At some point during this period of time, Megatron was known to have battled Optimus Prime in a laboratory on Earth, during which he hurled a flask of chemicals which exploded, scarring scientist [[Gregory Swofford]]. {{storylink|The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 1}}

In the year 2005, Megatron learned of the Autobots' plan to stage a major strike against him, and he responded by hijacking an Autobot shuttle on its way to Earth. After wiping out the occupants of the shuttle, Megatron announced his intention to wipe out the city and cripple the Autobot war effort, then looked down to see the wounded Ironhide crawling towards him. Deeming the action "heroic nonsense", Megatron delivered a point-blank fusion cannon blast to Ironhide's head, killing him.

When the shuttle began its approach to Autobot City, the young Autobot [[Hot Rod (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Hot Rod]] was able to spot the Decepticons aboard from his vantage point on [[Lookout Mountain]] and opened fire, exposing the villains before they were actually able to penetrate Autobot City. Megatron was undeterred, and he initiated a massive siege of the armored fortress. After a night of combat, Devastator successfully breached the city walls, allowing Megatron to enter. Before Megatron could get too deeply into the city, however, Optimus Prime arrived and faced him in a final battle. Megatron fought fiercely, and although deprived of his fusion cannon, he tore into Prime with a laser sword and even hunks of rubble, threatening to rip out the Autobot leader's optics.

Ultimately, Optimus Prime prevailed, bringing Megatron to his knees and standing over him, ion blaster in hand, poised to deliver the killing blow. Spotting a discarded pistol lying nearby, Megatron stalled for time by begging for mercy, crawling ever closer to the weapon, until Hot Rod spotted what he was doing and jumped him. Hot Rod proved a much less formidable opponent for Megatron, even in his weakened state, and he seized the youth, using him as a shield while he grabbed the gun and opened fire on Prime. Prime was felled by the shots, and Megatron tossed Hot Rod aside, striding up to the fallen Prime and preparing to end their war once and for all. With his last ounce of strength, however, Prime caught Megatron off-guard with a double axe-handle blow and sent the Decepticon leader toppling over the edge of the overhang on which they were standing. Crippled by the fall, Megatron was carried to the safety of Astrotrain by Soundwave as the tide of battle turned and the Decepticons retreated. Although Megatron was defeated, he had not failed; the wounds Optimus Prime had suffered were mortal, and he died soon after.

On the journey back to Cybertron, it became necessary for the Decepticons to jettison excess mass in order to return home safely. The wounded Decepticons were voted out and set adrift in space, with Starscream taking great delight in personally jettisoning Megatron, despite Megatron's protestations that he still functioned. Before long, however, Megatron's drifting body was found by the planet-eating [[Unicron]], who offered to rebuild the Decepticon's body if he would destroy the Autobot [[Matrix of Leadership]] for Unicron. Megatron professed that the Matrix had died with Optimus Prime, but Unicron revealed that it had been passed to the Autobots' new leader, [[Ultra Magnus (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Ultra Magnus]]. Testing the waters, Megatron inquired what he would receive for doing Unicron's will, and despite his dubious bargaining posture, Unicron offered to recreate his wounded body and give him new troops. Megatron demanded more but was denied, as Unicron declared that Megatron now belonged to him. This was the final straw for Megatron, who declined to be anyone's servant, so Unicron simply began to reformatted him. As the Decepticon movement began to grow on Cybertron, [[Kaon]] was among the first city-states to declare allegiance to the cause. Because Kaon controlled the smelting pools and forges of Cybertron that produced the majority of construction materials, [[Hook (G1)|Hook]] of the [[Constructicon (G1)|Constructicon]]s had little choice but to align his people with the Decepticon cause as well. However, seven unnamed Constructicons wanted the alliance to be more than in-name-only. They secretly constructed a new and powerful warrior named Megatron, hoping to use him to claim power over the Constructicons, the Decepticons, and Cybertron at large. These Constructicons grossly underestimated their own creation, though, as Megatron wanted all those things for himself. Using the Robo-Smasher, Megatron brainwashed Hook and the other Constructicon leaders into his servants on his first step to conquest. {{storylink|Hasbro Transformers Collectors' Club issue 42|Devastator's "Wings of Honor" Profile}}

Megatron proceeded to cement himself as one of the fourteen [[Decepticon Warlord]]s vying for power within their faction, though the [[Autobot High Council]] initially regarded his threat as a minor one. In addition to the Robo-Smasher, technology used by his forces included the Flying Upgrade, which gave him a Seeker-Skyraider Brigade. Megatron's chief rival was [[Deathsaurus (Victory)|Deathsaurus]], and like him, Megatron rarely attended the Decepticon War Council in person, but rather sent his lieutenant, Shockwave. He steadily consolidated his power, using the Robo-Smasher to brainwash more troops (including the entire ranks of the Autobots' [[Gyronian Sentry|Gyronian Sentries]]) and securing the loyalty of [[Reflector (G1)|Reflector]] of the [[Photon]]s, covertly increasing his influence over the Council, which he used to arrange an agreement between the council's members to share knowledge and technology for the purpose of eliminating the [[Cybertron Elite Guard|Autobot Elite Guard]]. Once he had access to their secrets, however, Megatron abandoned the War Council with his allies, leaving them to realize how they'd been duped. His first shot felled Magnum, but his second, meant for Prime, was intercepted by [[Dion]]. When the Decepticons detected magnetic fluctuations emanating from the caves, Megatron dispatched [[Soundwave (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Soundwave]]'s cassettes to investigate, and [[Ratbat (G1)|Ratbat]] discovered the facility. Hoping to destroy the fortress before it was completed, Megatron sent Starscream, Skywarp, Thundercracker and the Constructicons to attack the facility, but they were forced back by the Autobots. Incensed at their failure, Megatron ordered the Stunticons into action, then the Combaticons, leading to an all-out combiner brawl. Ultimately, Megatron's plan met with failure, as the Autobot combiners were able to hold off the Decepticons long enough for Scramble City to be completed and transformed into Metroplex. Jenny was able to use a [[fusion plate]] to get control of Starscream's motor functions, and she used him to destroy the Omega Whip controls, prompting Megatron to order a withdrawal. Before they could escape, however, the Decepticons were met with the full force of the Autobots, and Megatron unleashed his [[energon mace]] upon Optimus Prime once more. In the 1990s, the formal alliance between the Autobots and the American government led to a joint project to create the [[Trigger]], an [[Warp gate|interstellar transportation system]] that almost immediately became a target for Megatron, who knew they could use it to ferry huge quantities of energon back to Cybertron. Exploiting other countries' dissatisfaction with the Autobots' decision to ally solely with America, Megatron forged a clandestine pact with another Western power, which installed one of its people, [[Trov]], as part of the small crew that manned the Trigger space station. Trov granted the Decepticons access to the station, but was promptly killed by a blast from Megatron's fusion cannon, as the Decepticon leader naturally had no intentions of sharing power. Unfortunately for the Decepticons, the one surviving member of the crew, [[Makoto (Star Gate)|Makoto]], was able to activate the Trigger and send the Decepticons hurtling towards its portal. At the last moment, Megatron was able to blast the portal and deactivate it, and he was about to kill Makoto in rage when the Autobots arrived to rout the Decepticons. {{storylink|First Contact}}

Megatron was content to wait the six months the humans would take to rebuild the Trigger so that they could make another attempt to take control of it, and he mocked Starscream's impetuous desire to destroy it outright, accusing his subordinate of being unable to grasp the concept of long-term development. {{storylink|Divided Views}} Seeking to prove his competence, Starscream took a leaf out of Megatron's book and arranged an alliance with the [[Prime Minister of Japan]]: the country would provide them with energy in return for a promise of non-aggression. Despite the huge amount of energon cubes that Starscream's plan brought in, Megatron was not impressed, and his reservations toward Starscream's plan only proved correct when the Autobots deduced what was going on and showed up to stop them. Optimus Prime tackled Megatron into the ocean, and they battled on the sea bed with their axe and mace, until Megatron had [[Rumble (G1)|Rumble]] and [[Frenzy (G1)|Frenzy]] trigger an earthquake that caused widespread devastation. Megatron revealed the Prime Minister's role and declared that this was a lesson for Prime not to trust humans, before sending his old foe tumbling into a chasm opened by the quake. {{storylink|Activation}}

Discovering that Starscream had absconded with the energon cubes while he had been battling Prime, Megatron led the Decepticons back to the Trigger, where Starscream had returned. In actuality, Starscream's hand was being guided by the time-displaced ghost of his future self, and using the energon, both present and future Starscream merged with the Trigger to become a monstrous, misshapen robot. The Autobots arrived to protect the Trigger's crew, and a huge space-battle ensued, during which Optimus Prime returned from his apparent demise. To stop Starscream, Megatron was forced to transform into pistol mode and allow Optimus Prime to wield him. Prime channelled the power of the Matrix through Megatron's firing systems, shocking the Decepticon leader with its sheer power, before unleashing the blast that destroyed the Trigger. The vast majority of the Autobots were occupied battling Megatron's forces on Cybertron, leading to the creation of new "Binaltech" bodies for the injured Autobots on Earth to protect the planet. {{storylink|Story of Binaltech, Chapter 1}}

In the midst of this Binaltech affair, the time-tossed Decepticon [[Ravage (G1)|Ravage]] attempted to alter history by using the [[Kronosphere]] time-machine. In the middle of a decisive battle between the Autobots and Decepticons, Ravage used the Kronosphere to transport Megatron and the Decepticons through time, altering history so that the Autobots were left to face the looming threat of [[Unicron]] alone. {{storylink|Changing Lanes}} This disruption of the natural order of time proved almost catastrophic, but reality was saved by the appearance of a mysterious entity known only as the "[[Optimus Primal|Protector]]", which restored the timeline as it should have been, but also preserved the altered "BT World" timeline as an alternate universe. {{storylink|Binal Time}}

There, he was faced by [[Nemesis Prime (G1)|Nemesis Prime]], a clone of Optimus Prime created by Doctor Arkeville, who desired to conquer Earth for himself and refused to allow Megatron to go any further. Outraged at the sight of an Earth machine wearing a Decepticon insignia, Megatron attacked.

At the same time, however, the Autobot spy Mirage had been dispatched to Cybertron, where he was instructed to locate and throw a [[large switch]] on which the Autobots had received information. With his Decepticons now mere cavemen in comparison to these super-evolved Autobots, Megatron embarked on a journey across space and time, allying himself with the Megatrons of numerous other worlds in the multiverse and conducting exhausting research and training in order to perfect a scheme that would grant him power on the level of the Alternity.

Putting his plan into action, Megatron lured the Alternity's natural enemy, the transdimensional time-eating god-beast known as [[Hytherion]], into the parallel world of [[Primax 109.0 Beta]] in the year 2009. Watching as the Optimus Primes of the Alternity engaged the creature in battle, Megatron activated his new [[chaotizer]] device, successfully fusing himself with Hytherion and transforming himself into a hyper-dimensional entity of power on the level of the Alternity itself. Disappearing into a higher realm, Megatron revealed he had created [[auto-avatar]]s of his own to interact with the physical world the same way the Alternity had. Although still new to higher-dimensional battle, Megatron's attacks were powerful and deadly, as he managed to tear a gash in the moon overhead with his Tesseractal Sword. He mocked Nemesis Prime's turn to the side of good, thinking it had cost him his edge in battle, as the Alternity warrior had been continually missing him with the shots he fired. Unfortunately for Megatron, he soon discovered how wrong he was: Nemsis Prime had actually exploited his unfamiliarity with this new form of combat, and trapped him in a closed time loop, where he was repeatedly struck a single laser blast over and over again, until his Auto-avatar was reduced to scrap. {{storylink|Arch-Nemesis!}}

Continuously foiled at every turn by the Alternity, Megatron began recruiting Decepticons from various universal streams to serve as his agents. Seeking to gain control of the [[Planicron]]s, inhabitants of a two-dimensional universe known as [[Flatworld]] who had bonded themselves to the very fabric of their reality, Megatron dispatched [[Reflector (G1)#Alternity)|Reflector]] to [[Primax 905.0 Beta]] to search for a magical tablet that would permit him access to this lower dimension. To lure out the others, "Reverse Convoy" sent out an SOS message, prompting Star Saber to come to their rescue. Star Saber was shocked to be shot out of the sky by Reverse Convoy, who promptly shed his disguise and revealed himself to be "Rebirth Megatron". As Megatron pressed his cannon barrel against Prime's head, Lio Convoy came leaping onto the scene at the last moment. Unimpressed, Super Megatron shrugged off Sixliner with a single blow, informing the runt he was a million years too young to challenge him. A worthy foe soon appeared in the form of Star Convoy, and the two eternal enemies threw down once more. Super Megatron transformed to his "gunjet" mode and proved a powerful enemy, but was tricked by Star Convoy into crashing into the side of an oil tank. During an early battle, Megatron threatened to destroy [[Volt]] and [[Electro]]. He attempted to persuade Electro to join him, but Electro politely declined the invitation, as his rescue had just arrived. Megatron was demoted to overseeing an experiment the Decepticons were carrying out on [[Earth]], creating biomechanical creatures in an undersea base with the aid of some human scientists. The experiment ran out of control when the monsters turned on Megatron and the Decepticons and kept them trapped in the base, only periodically departing to attack human shipping vessels. These attacks caught the attention of the Autobots, who discovered the existence of the base by tracking the creatures' movements, and sent a team in to investigate. The team include an [[Eldedroid]] (a robot duplicate of Optimus Prime) controlled by the mind of a human named [[Daniel Witwicky (G1)|Dan]], who was attacked by Megatron when he broke off from his teammates to search the base. As Megatron was without his fusion cannon, Dan was unwilling to shoot him, and instead engaged him in a fist fight, albeit one that he had little chance of winning. Unlike the other Decepticons, Megatron was not fooled by the Eldedroid's appearance: He knew that he was not fighting his true eternal enemy. '''Megatron''' is the founder of the Decepticon uprising, and their most well-known and feared [[Decepticon leader|leader]]. As a young, charismatic leader forged in battle and the heritage of war, he began to believe in a grand purpose for his race—it is the [[Transformer|Transformers]]' glorious destiny to rule an [[Decepticon Empire|empire]] which will span the universe. The opposite of his mortal enemy [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]], he feels great contempt for other Transformers who, he feels, betray their proud heritage by demanding peace and cooperation with weaker life forms. It is the destiny of the Decepticons to bring order to the universe through conquest, though in the millions of years since coining this purpose it remains to be seen how much of his mission statement is altruistic... and how much of it is mere words built to fuel warriors to further his desire for personal power.

Megatron will attempt almost anything to achieve his goals, but his schemes are rarely in any way subtle. This is perhaps due to his arrogance, but his pride is not so strong as to dissuade him from abandoning a battle he is losing. Some would question his sanity, though these few are mostly now dead by his hands... or his [[fusion cannon]], depending on his mood. Sometimes he uses his [[energon mace]] to strike them down. It does not matter how they die. Death by the hands of Megatron is an honour.

Megatron was a [[gladiatorial combat|gladiator]] from [[Tarn]], who sought to turn Cybertron into a cosmic dreadnaught. To win his war for conquest, Megatron's Decepticons developed the art of transformation. Reawakening on Earth in [[1984]], Megatron was ousted from command by [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]], and their power struggle continued for sometime until Optimus Prime killed himself in a video game duel. Refusing to believe his nemesis was dead, Megatron committed suicide by blowing himself up on a [[space bridge]]. However, the explosion had merely deposited him in the [[Dead End (place)|Dead End]] region of Cybertron, where he wandered as an [[empty]], with no recollection of who he was.

After regaining his memories, Megatron forced [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]] to turn [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] into a [[Pretender]], but the ploy failed and the two were grotesquely fused in a [[trans-time dimensional portal]] explosion. Megatron was responsible for bringing Cybertron out of its [[Golden Age]] when he re-started the Autobot/Decepticon civil war nine million years ago. Among his first actions was the fatal wounding of a young dock worker named Orion Pax, who was rebuilt to become Megatron's mortal enemy, [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Optimus Prime]].

Megatron's forces boarded the Autobots' spacecraft when it was on a mission to search for new sources of energy on other planets, and was knocked offline like all the other Transformers when the craft crashed on prehistoric Earth. When both factions reawakened in 1984, Megatron made it his mission to pillage all of Earth's natural resources and enslave its populace, with the goal of revitalizing Cybertron and dominating the entire universe. His plans were by turns cunning, wicked, outrageous, and often, utterly, utterly ludicrous.

In 2005, Megatron faced off with Optimus Prime in a battle at [[Autobot City]], during which he fatally wounded the Autobot leader, but not without taking severe damage himself. Cast adrift into space, Megatron was found by the planet-eater, [[Unicron]], and he agree to destroy the Matrix then recreated as [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]].

In other timelines which branch out of this one, Megatron became a [[Transmetal]], ordered the [[murdered puppy|murder of a puppy]], and years after his transformation into Galvatron, became Megatron once again, in various powered-up forms.

To rule [[Earth]], Megatron came up with the idea to raid sunken treasure. Once they obtained the treasure, Megatron decided to use a truck to take it into town and buy some factories. Unfortunately for him, the truck was [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]], who released a bunch of [[Autobot]]s and defeated Megatron and his men. {{storylink|Search for Treasure Under the Sea}} Megatron's next plan was to lock up the Autobots in a [[special Autobot prison]]. They managed to get most of their enemy captured, but while Megatron was distracted by a [[Giant fake Autobot|cardboard cutout]], [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]] freed the Autobots and Optimus soon had Megatron wrapped in an iron bar. {{storylink|Bumblebee to the Rescue!}}

Megatron sent out the Decepticons to find factories to build more troops. They ended up falling into a trap laid by the forewarned Autobots, but Megatron refused to surrender and Optimus Prime threw him into orbit. Tricking thousands of humans into digging a large cavern underneath the [[Kalahari Desert]] in [[Africa]], Megatron detonated them with the largest explosion the world had ever seen, transforming the coal and humans into the world's largest diamond. Transporting it to a satellite launch base in [[Brazil]], Megatron gloated the [[crystal satellite|satellite]] would use the diamond as a lens to melt the [[Rocky Mountains]]. Prime countered the attack by constructing a square mile of polished metal, which the Autobots placed below the satellite, deflecting its beam and destroying it. Megatron and Soundwave escaped underground in a [[turbine mole machine]]. {{storylink|Satellite of Doom}}

The duo stole an enormous hovering fuel transport, but [[Jetfire (G1)|Skyfire]] destroyed it, forcing Megatron to come up with a new scheme: to drill the [[Prudhoe Bay oil reservoir]]. Their drill was so powerful, it caused volcanic eruptions and [[Siberia]] to approach the US, accelerating tensions between the US and USSR. Optimus had [[razon gas]] pumped into the reservoir, returning the oil below the sea floor and rising the Decepticon device. As Decepticon leader, Megatron was part of the forces that attacked the Autobot Ark while it was trying to eliminate asteroids that threated to smash [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] to pieces. The Ark crashed on [[Earth]], and four million years later, the Decepticons were first to be woken by the ship's computer. Leaving the ship, they attempted to destroy it, but their energy levels were too low, and Megatron announced they'd have to find new sources of energy. After raiding the nuclear plant at nearby [[Kimball]], they returned to the Ark, only to find it empty. He ordered his men to split up and go in two different directions, and hence they were able to outflank the Autobots. The battle was short-lived, as the Autobots proved too much for them, and the Decepticons retreated. {{storylink|Battle for Cybertron}}

A bunch of humans set up a race for charity, and the victor would receive a year's supply of oil and gasoline. Well, the Decepticons desperately wanted that bounty, so rather than just steal it, they decided to sneak into the race. [[Cliffjumper (G1)|Cliffjumper]] was one of the Autobots driving in the rally and was unaware that the scary black Cadillac was actually being driven by Megatron! Megatron dogged Cliffjumper for quite a while but ended up losing to the Minibot. Cliffjumper won the race and everybody smiled, even Optimus Prime. {{storylink|The Great Car Rally}}

After a particularly damaging battle, Megatron sent the [[Seeker (body-type)|Seeker]]s to distract the Autobots while he took a small squad to capture a broken-down oil truck nearby, claiming it would allow them to defeat the Autobots once and for all. While he and his men were implementing the plan, somehow [[Sunstreaker (G1)|Sunstreaker]] sneaked up and got the truck working again. Megatron furiously pursued the truck and managed to seize it from behind. Suddenly [[Swoop (G1)|Swoop]] appeared overhead and Megatron proved unable to shoot him down. The [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobot]] dropped a bomb on the group of Decepticons, reducing them to a pile of metal scrap. An automated signal summoned a [[Decepticon rescue squadron|rescue squadron]], who arrived a short time later to retrieve the remains of Megatron and his men. {{storylink|Decepticon Hijack}}

Megatron set his sights on raiding a power plant, and promised his men that whoever came up with a fool-proof plan would be made Decepticon [[second-in-command]]. He was pleased when [[Kickback (G1)|Kickback]] informed him that [[Grapple]] had been captured, and even more so when [[Bombshell (G1)|Bombshell]] arrived back at base with the [[cerebro-shell]]ed Autobot. Megatron instructed Grapple to come up with a plan to steal the energy in the power plant. When the rest of the Autobots turned up to rescue their friend, Megatron took the opportunity to gloat before battle commenced. He was furious when Starscream led an impromptu attack on the Autobots at the solar plant and ordered the three jets to retreat before they damaged the reactor. Being unfamiliar with volcanoes, Megatron decided to investigate, but his men were unable to capture the [[John Gordon|two]] [[Tim Gordon|humans]] helping the Autobots. After the Autobots had retreated, the Decepticons got their change to look more closely at the volcano, only for it to erupt, trapping them with lava. {{storylink|Terror of Mount Sheelah}} Megatron had his men kidnap humans from towns to use as slave labor, but after [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]] stole the Decepticons' [[global crystal]], the Decepticons were forced to set the humans free. {{storylink|Bumblebee to the Rescue (G1)|Bumblebee to the Rescue}}

After [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] spotted a hydro-dam at [[Stanley Lake]], Megatron decided to see if it was suitable for their energy needs, and staged an invasion. Though they appeared triumphant after the Autobots retreated, the valley was flooded with water from the dam a short time later, washing them all away. {{storylink|Menace at the Dam}} Furious at the mounting defeats, Megatron sent Starscream to infiltrate the Autobot ranks. With the discovery of a new super energy source known as the [[Blackball]]s, Megatron found himself joined by numerous Decepticons from all across the timestream, all hoping to obtain the ebony spheres. Naturally, oposing him were a team of Autobots, also gathered from all across the timestream.

In one confrontation with his eternal foe, Optimus Prime, Megatron got to relive their battle at Autobot City. Except this time around, Megatron was defeated when Prime launched his "Matrix Attack" (''literally'' launching the Matrix from his chest, bonking Megatron on the noggin). {{storylink|Transformers PD Type##1 "You're Great! Later, [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] managed to find what he ''thought'' was a Blackball. He presented it to Megatron and received much praise...until the Blackball turned out to be a cartoon bomb which exloded in their faces. During battle with [[Victory Leo]], Megatron found himself horribly outmatched. Thinking quickly, he launched a special weapon from his fusion cannon: a ball of yarn. In the year [[199X]], the Decepticons had learned of a powerful new energy source known as [[forestonite]] which just happened to be located (surprise surprise) on [[Earth]]. Megatron sent his trio of [[Cyberjet|Cyberjets]] to Earth first to draw out the enemy Autobots. The Cyberjets made quick work of [[Electro]] but were soon halted by the appearance of Optimus Prime.

Megatron then entered the fray and fired his Black Hole Burn attack from his fusion cannon, narrowly missing Optimus Prime but vaporizing [[Hooligan (G2)|Hooligan]] in the process. Prime fought fiercely but Megatron began to take the upper hand in battle.

However, Prime was encouraged to keep fighting by the cheers of a human boy named [[Junpei]]. Megatron, surprised at Prime's resilience, attempted to finish his foe off with his Tornado Axe attack. Prime countered with his Double Wheel-Torque Mega-Ton, which trumped Megatron's attack and injured the Decepticon badly. After the Autobot/Decepticon war moved to Earth, Megatron hunted down the [[Voyager probe]] as it traveled through the [[Solar System]] and encoded a message on its disc. Should his efforts fail, he left detailed instructions to any Decepticon descendants who recovered the disc, instructions which apparently condoned use of [[transwarp]] technology to alter history in his favor by locating the [[Ark (G1)|Ark]] before it was reactivated, with access codes to the Ark stored in the disk, and killing Optimus Prime before the Autobots and Decepticons reawaken. {{storylink|The Agenda (Part 2)}}

The original Megatron himself was stranded in Earth's past on board the Ark, offline. Before long, Predacon Megatron was able to approach the comatose body of his namesake and steal his [[spark]], integrating it into his own system. Almost immediately, however, during Predacon Megatron's painful reaction to this integration, he was thrown into a pool of lava by his treacherous underlings. In spite of—or perhaps because of—this, Predacon Megatron emerged from the lava, with a new body that could now transform into a fire-breathing dragon. Young Megatron was a rising star in gladiatorial combat in the depths of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]. As victory upon victory mounted, he began to realize that the games were nothing more than an elaborate conspiracy by the [[Council of Ancients]] to divert the attentions of the masses from the dangerous truth of Cybertron’s history. When Megatron began to show interest in Cybertron's buried past through exploration and research, the Council of Ancients attempted to have him assassinated—a plan that only resulted in stirring up even more discontent among Cybertronians, allowing Megatron to begin recruiting for the Decepticon movement.

First his "inner circle", then many of the gladiators, and then finally disgruntled civilians answered his call to action. The Decepticons were born. {{storylink|The Route of All Evil}}

When Megatron drove his fist into his opponent's chest, the Matrix enveloped them both in light, and they found themselves on [[Earth|an alien world]]. {{storylink|The War Within issue 4|The War Within #4}} Visions of the future, spawned by the Matrix, played out before the two warriors, even as they continued to fight. Finally they were returned to subterranean Cybertron, but were quickly separated. {{storylink|The War Within issue 5|The War Within #5}} Optimus returned with [[Grimlock (G1)|Grimlock]]'s sword and a new resolve, defeating Megatron. Meanwhile, Starscream had activated the planet mechaforming process too soon, resulting in the destruction of the machinery. Roughly 7.4 million years BCE, Megatron and Optimus Prime disappeared in an early test of the then-unstable [[space bridge]] matter-transport system. {{storylink|Fragmentation}} Spending an undisclosed time on the planet [[Quintessa]], Megatron returned with an overwhelming army of lifeless [[Air Warrior|seeker clones]], arriving as the planet was on the verge of peace. {{storylink|The Age of Wrath}} He quickly subjugated the planet, though he kept secret the fact that he was working with the Quintessons. He took great delight in sealing Starscream in a tank of [[Piranacon (Quintesson)|Piranacons]] and placing the Autobots in internment camps, while working on a plan to access Cybertron's core. {{storylink|The Age of Wrath Pt.2}}

Four million years BCE, Cybertron was threatened by a massive approaching asteroid, so Optimus Prime led a contingent of Autobots aboard the [[Ark (G1)|Ark]] to blow the rock to fragments, which were transported away by an orbital space bridge network. When this task was completed, Megatron chose this moment to strike, attacking the Ark with his troops. Crippled, the craft flew through one of the space bridge portals, and was transported to prehistoric Earth, where it crashed, entombing the occupants in stasis for four million years.

The Autobots and Decepticons were reactivated in 1984, but specific details of their battles in the 1980s and 1990s are unrecorded. In 1999, a Autobot/Human military alliance succeeded in capturing and deactivating the Decepticons. However, the [[Ark II]] spaceship carrying them back to Cybertron exploded shortly after liftoff, and the Transformers were believed destroyed. In actuality, they had been scattered back to Earth, where they lay in [[stasis lock]] across the globe for three years.

This slumber was brought to an end when [[Lazarus|Adam Rook]] (aka Lazarus), a rogue military scientist who had devised a method of controlling Transformers, salvaged many of the fallen Cybertronians and reprogrammed them as mass killing machines, which he then attempted to sell on the black market. Megatron was used to attack and destroy a rebel encampment in [[South America]]. Lazarus later demonstrated his voice control of Megatron to a prospective client, however though Megatron obeyed the lesser commands, he would not move when commanded to kneel. {{storylink|Prime Directive issue 1|Prime Directive #1}}

Having sufficiently raised interest, Lazarus held an auction, beginning with Megatron. He was unprepared when the Decepticon leader demonstrated his autonomy, blasting his way out of the bunker. {{storylink|Prime Directive issue 2|Prime Directive #2}} Megatron swiftly put into action a plan to use a [[cyber-virus]] to reformat Earth into a new Cybertron, with Lazarus as its first casualty. As the Autobots arrived, Megatron outlined his plan to Optimus, suggesting that the Autobot leader simply let it happen. Prime declined, however as the two factions fought, the US Military decided to enact [[Operation Clean-Up]] and dropped a bomb on them. {{storylink|Prime Directive issue 3|Prime Directive #3}}

The bomb's energy absorbed by the virus, the Decepticons left the area before the Autobots could recover. Megatron unleashed [[Devastator (G1)|Devastator]] on [[San Francisco]], resulting in mass slaughter and the devastation of the city. The Autobots arrived and engaged the Decepticons in battle, but [[Superion (G1)|Superion]]'s defeat turned the course of the battle towards Autobot defeat. {{storylink|Prime Directive issue 4|Prime Directive #4}} Although Prime took down Devastator, he still fell before Megatron, who took the time to point out how worthless the humans around them were. He again suggested that Optimus join him. {{storylink|Prime Directive issue 5|Prime Directive #5}} The actions of a group of humans, including ramming Megatron with fire engines, inspired the Autobots to fight back. Optimus slammed Megatron to the ground and delivered a beating, but Soundwave's news that the humans had launched a nuke at their battleground in a virtual repeat of the events in Canada, provoked a peal of laughter from Megatron. Several months later. Megatron was subliminally summoned to a remote area in Alaska along with the other Earthbound Transformers. There they battled until Megatron's former second-in-command, [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]], arrived and revealed that in their absence the war on Cybertron had ended. He arrested Megatron, Prime, and their troops as war criminals. Megatron, weakened by battle, was quickly defeated by Shockwave and loaded aboard a shuttle for return to Cybertron, only to have Starscream seize the opportunity to jettison him into space on the return trip. {{storylink|New World Order}} Megatron used the time floating in space to contemplate his existence and the Decepticon goal. Realizing that he had wasted millennia in his feud with Prime, Megatron resolved to once again conquer Cybertron as a means of enhancing the Transformer race and strengthening it from outside threats. His spark within the body of [[Megatron (BW)|Megatron]], Megatron was able to talk the [[Predacon (BW)|Predacon]] leader into a new plan. Once they had broken into the [[Ark (G1)|Ark]] and implanted a fragment of Megatron's spark into Starscream, he was able to use the air warrior to attempt to return his spark to its rightful place. Unfortunately the beast Megatron resisted and overcame Megatron in a war of wills, subsuming the older Megatron. After the [[Beast Wars (event)|Beast Wars]] ended, the [[Maximal]]s returned Megatron's spark to his body. {{storylink|A Meeting of Minds}}

Following yet another fight between Megatron and Starscream, the latter went missing. The discovery that Starscream appeared to be working with the Autobots drove Megatron into a rage, and he unsuccessfully tried to extract the Seeker from the clutches of his foes, only to be beaten off by the Autobots. Starscream later returned of his own accord, claiming to have been feigning amnesia in order to gain access to the Autobot base. When [[Cobra]], a ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world, found a crashed spaceship full of Transformers in [[stasis lock]], Megatron proved to them that the machines weren't piloted vehicles when he briefly awoke and groaned that he still functioned. Cobra rebuilt the aliens into new vehicles and reprogrammed them to serve Cobra, with the exception of Megatron, who was rebuilt to transform into a Walther P38 handgun, but was only locked in this mode and not reprogrammed. Holstered by [[Cobra Commander]] at all times, the Decepticon mocked Cobra's decisions, such as deciding that [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]], Megatron's traitorous lieutenant, would serve as the Commander's choice of transport. {{storylink|G.I. Regardless of his complaints, Megatron's only chance to be released from his state was to follow Cobra Commander's orders, such as providing instructions on how to create [[energon]]. Things weren't all bad, though, as he still got some enjoyment out of seeing his nemesis [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] being forced to steal and destroy. {{storylink|G.I. When the Transformers were cleared of their reprogramming thanks to [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]], Cobra Commander found himself face to face with a very stern Optimus Prime, and tried to use Megatron to shoot the Autobot. However, Megatron still had some control of his body and strictly refused to fire, instead bargaining with Cobra Commander to return him to normal. The human gave in, and Megatron transformed and clashed with his old enemy. With Prime low on energon, Megatron came out on top, but before he could finish Prime off, Starscream attacked him and tried to take leadership of the Decepticons. Ignoring Prime to focus on some more long-term plans, Megatron made [[Doctor Mindbender]] use the [[SPS Satellite]] to create large amounts of energon. However, his party was soon crashed when Optimus Prime attacked the facility and used the energon to power up. Finding the situation unsalvageable, Megatron tried to escape while Prime was busy with [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]] and [[Reflector (G1)|Reflector]]. {{storylink|G.I. Joe vs. the Transformers issue 5|G.I. Joe vs. the Transformers #5}} He ran right into [[G.I. Joe (team)|G.I. Joe]], but was unimpressed with their firepower and fought back with his [[energon mace]], possibly killing [[Mercer]]. Things quickly turned for the worse for Megatron; his arm was heavily damaged by a stray beam from the malfunctioning SPS Satellite, he was pounded by G.I. Joe's rockets, and Optimus Prime caught up to him and beat him to a pulp. Prime then stole his [[fusion cannon]] and used it to destroy the satellite and smack Megatron across the jaw, defeating him and ending the battle. A few years later, the human scientists had used Megatron's technology to create the [[Serpentor|Serpent Organic Robot]], a synthetic creature that combined the personalities of several of [[Earth]]'s most famous warmongers and Megatron. After being prematurely activated by Cobra Commander, Serpent O.R. flashbacked to a memory of Megatron's imprisonment and attacked the Cobra leader. After learning that [[Cobra]], like the Decepticons, were ruthless conquerors in search of power, Megatron allied himself with the humans. However, this was merely a ruse so that he could get his hands on the Matrix, which proved hard as [[Cobra Commander]] kept on his person at all times. Megatron and his troops spent the following year helping Cobra ransack various European nations, stealing energy for themselves while leaving the useless "[[Gold|yellow metal]] and painted paper" for Cobra. In the summer of [[1939]], he took out the aerial defense of the English Channel alongside [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] and [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]], clearing the way for an invasion of the [[United Kingdom]]. {{storylink|The Line}}

Hours later at the Fera Islands, Megatron was in the process of beating up Starscream for leaving his post when he spotted an Autobot [[Sky Spy|repair drone]] in the process of reactivating [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] and his troops. This angered him slightly more than [[Destro]] eyeing his [[energon cube]]s. {{storylink|Transformed}} Deciding that he needed a safer place to store the energy, Megatron commandeered a submarine and forced Cobra troops to move the cubes into it, which did not please Cobra Commander. However, Megatron had decided their alliance had outlived its usefulness anyway, and prepared to squish the fleshling, only to learn the hard way that Cobra Commander could use the Matrix to cause him great pain. As Megatron collapsed, the Cobra leader warned him against ever rebelling again. {{storylink|Trial by Fire}}

The Decepticon commander decided to bide his time, and stood calmly by Cobra Commander's side as their enemies closed in on the Terrordrome. When [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] refused to follow Cobra Commander's orders, Megatron admonished him in order to further trick the commander that he had learned his lesson. {{storylink|Trenches}} As Cobra Commander's orders led to Shockwave breaking apart, Megatron suggested that he be given the Matrix so he could repair his underling. Unfortunately for him, Cobra Commander did not fall for it, but Megatron at least got to taunt him for wasting valuable troops like that. Shortly afterwards, [[Bruticus (G1)|Bruticus]] was unleashed, causing a rockslide that crushed Cobra Commander's legs, despite his orders for Megatron to shield him. Instead, Megatron "humbly" suggested that the commander use his gun mode as a means of ending his life. Cobra Commander could not go through with it, but Megatron was simply picked up by the [[Baroness]], who executed her former leader. Free at last, the Decepticon leader went after the Matrix, only to find it had been stolen by [[Snake-Eyes]]. Before he could kill the ninja, [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] arrived and attacked him, keeping him at bay while Snake-Eyes destroyed the Matrix in an attempt to destroy Bruticus, killing all the Transformers in the process. {{storylink|The Iron Fist}}

Long ago, before the war and under the reign of [[Nominus Prime]], Megatron of [[Tarn (city)|Tarn]] was an [[energon]] miner, a member of the lower class, living near [[Rodion]]. The caste-ridden social apartheid of Cybertronian society—where your form determined your role, and your role your rights—sickened him and, being an intellectual sort, he wrote [[After the Ark: Nominus Prime and the Illusion of Progress|a treatise]] on how pacifist dissent and the exchange of ideas could change things. But then he was arrested for a crime [[Impactor (G1)|a friend]] had committed against the Autobot upper classes, and [[Whirl (G1)|one of their friends]] in the police beat him in his cell, intending to kill him, while mocking him for how nobody would care about the death of a lowly miner. Police captain [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Orion Pax]], however, found out Megatron was innocent and let him go. But now he was filled with rage and hate, disillusioned with his former ideology and realising the power of applied violence. {{storylink|Chaos Theory Part 1}}

Continuing to seethe with hate and frustration, Megatron began working at [[Mining Outpost C-12]]. One day [[Decimus|Senator Decimus]] arrived at the mine to announce that the mine was being closed immediately and the workers would be relocated. However, one of the Senator's guards killed a worker for insubordination and claims of Senate corruption, which spurred Megatron into action. He attacked Senator Decimus and killed the guard in self-defense, and was shocked to find he had done so. He and the other miners were en route to [[Penal Facility H-3|imprisonment]] when [[Rumble (G1)|Rumble]] and [[Frenzy (G1)|Frenzy]] broke free and started a riot aboard [[Longshot (G1)|their ship]]. They overpowered their guards, damaged Decimus's ship to ward off pursuit, as the authorities would focus on his rescue, and made their way to [[Kaon]]. {{storylink|Megatron Origin issue 1|Megatron Origin #1}}

After evading law enforcement, Megatron joined a team of underworld gladiators under the tutelage of [[Clench (G1)|Clench]]. Initially repulsed by killing his opponents, the games eventually turned him more brutal and excessive, and he took control of the entire operation from Clench. The opportunistic Senator [[Ratbat (G1)|Ratbat]], after seeing how much money there was in the underworld matches, sent his agent [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]] to offer Megatron weaponry and technology to upgrade himself and his comrades. {{storylink|Megatron Origin issue 2|Megatron Origin #2}} [[Sentinel Prime (G1)|Sentinel Prime]]'s Autobots were sent to investigate the gladiatorial games, but when two Autobots were personally killed by Megatron, Prime's forces stepped up their pursuit. Megatron used the gladiatorial games to drum up an army of violent malcontents and spread chaos throughout Cybertron. He then deliberately allowed Sentinel Prime's forces to capture his burgeoning army, {{storylink|Megatron Origin issue 3|Megatron Origin #3}} so that [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] (pretending to defect) and Soundwave and his hidden cassette army could exterminate the Kaon Senate and then free every last prisoner. Megatron led the army of prisoners against the Autobots, beat Sentinel Prime nearly to death, and took control of Kaon. {{storylink|Megatron Origin issue 4|Megatron Origin #4}}

Megatron's infamy spread and his message of rising up against the ruling classes struck a chord with many disenfranchised Cybertronians. One such fellow was [[Drift (G1)|Drift]], who attended a Decepticon rally and was personally asked by Megatron to fight at his side. Megatron rechristened Drift as "Deadlock" and welcomed him into the Decepticon fold. {{storylink|Drift issue 2|Drift #2}} Soon enough, the growing Decepticon forces had spread across six [[Polities of Cybertron|Torus-States]]. {{storylink|Parasites}} At one point, he met Orion Pax again on [[Sherma Bridge]], where they did battle for the first time. Orion chopped off Megatron's cannon arm during the fight, but the Decepticon leader came out victorious by tossing him off the bridge. {{storylink|Chaos Theory Part 1}}

To Megatron's interest, his now-abandoned treatise had been a source of inspiration for Orion Pax, who had even quoted from it when he confronted the Senate and openly accused them of corruption. When the Autobot captain came close to Kaon during a mission, Megatron saw it as a chance to speak to him and had his Decepticons bring him in. {{storylink|The Hunt for Soundwave}} Orion, turned cynical by his time in the force, refused Megatron's offers for them to work together against the newest corrupt Autobot leader, [[Zeta Prime]]. Megatron let him know that Zeta was even worse than he seemed, having planned to let Orion die in [[Nyon]] so that he could use his death as pretext to invade the rebel-infested city and drain the citizens of their energon. Orion then escaped, but knowing the doubts he'd placed in his head would only serve to damage the Autobot cause, Megatron let him go. {{storylink|Cause and Effect}}

Megatron continued to keep an eye on Orion Pax's activities, spying on his encounter with the Nyon insurgent [[Hot Rod (G1)|Hot Rod]]. {{storylink|Ruins}} When Zeta Prime's [[Omega Destructor]]s suddenly attacked Nyon, Megatron was surprised by how zealously the new Prime fought against the city's rebels, but his real interest still lay on how Orion would handle the crisis. {{storylink|Purge}} Orion turned on Zeta, who in turn attempted to kill him, prompting Megatron to intervene and force the Prime to retreat. Taking Orion back to Kaon, he again offered that they work together against Zeta's corruption, and this time the Autobot officer accepted. {{storylink|Choices}} As their combined forces invaded the [[Citadel]] in Iacon, Megatron and Orion Pax made their way inside and fought Zeta Prime in person.The battle ended with Megatron killing the Prime with a head shot, and with his objective complete, he then betrayed the injured Orion by shooting him in the back. {{storylink|Overthrown}}

With Zeta dead, Megatron conquered Iacon and declared himself ruler of Cybertron. His soldiers patrolled the planet's streets to "keep the peace", mostly by hunting down and capturing any remaining Autobots who opposed him. {{storylink|Transformation (issue)|Transformation}} During his rule, Megatron attempted to sway the neutral [[Hot Rod (G1)|Hot Rod]] into joining the Decepticons, but he decided otherwise upon witnessing Megatron ordering the execution of several Autobot prisoners. {{storylink|Rise}} Megatron was shocked to learn that Orion Pax had survived the betrayal and was organizing a rebellion against him under the name "Optimus Prime", and even more shocked that people actually had the courage to listen to him. He wasted no time in striking back against the rebels approaching the Citadel with the full force of his army. {{storylink|Broadcast}}

During the battle, Megatron ordered Blitzwing to distract the Autobots long enough for him to bring out the "vamparc annihilator", a giant [[vamparc ribbon]] built inside the Citadel by Zeta Prime. Though he managed to knock out a lot of Autobots, [[Metroplex (G1)|Metroplex]] arrived and took out the cannon along with the entire building, causing Megatron to fall to the streets and face Optimus Prime himself. He lost the ensuing [[The Transformers: The Movie|familiar-looking duel]] and was badly wounded after a failed attempt to defeat Prime by holding Hot Rod hostage, forcing him to escape aboard Astrotrain. As he fled, he warned Optimus that he hadn't won, he had only started a war unlike any Cybertron had ever seen. {{storylink|Endgame}}

At some point early in the war, he wrote ''[[Towards Peace]]'', a new treatise to replace ''After the Ark'', in which he described continuing to fight the war until the very notion of conflict was literally inconceivable. Over time, the war between Megatron's Decepticon army and Optimus Prime's Autobots covered the entire planet and soon beyond to the rest of the galaxy. Optimus grew to respect and fear Megatron as a calm, calculating and measured opponent, while Megatron himself respected Prime's sheer power and his skill as a tactician and as a leader. {{storylink|Escalation issue 5|Escalation #5}} They would proceed to duel each other directly many times, such as during the [[Battle for Hell's Point]] and the [[Siege of Massunstrad]] {{storylink|Chaos Theory Part 1}}, and also fight by proxy, sealing themselves into [[Omniglobe]]s, "hypercongizance shells" which would feed them the entirety of data from the frontlines, enabling the sides to throw everything they had at each other for a prolonged period of time. The Decepticons didn't even spare the resources to collect their dead, who lay where they fell for eons. {{storylink|Rules of Disengagement}}

Ultimately, with total war getting nowhere, Megatron would go on to develop a six-stage [[infiltration protocol]] to be used for conquering targeted planets, and selected Sixshot, a living weapon he had constructed with frightening amounts of power that only he had the "off-switch" for {{storylink|Devastation issue 5|Devastation #5}}, and the similarly ultra-powerful Overlord and [[Black Shadow (Victory)|Black Shadow]] to be the agents who would strike the final blow in each battle. {{storylink|Last Stand of the Wreckers issue 2|Last Stand of the Wreckers #2}} As the Autobot/Decepticon war progressed, the conflict became so great that it created an impending energy crisis and threatened the stability of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] itself. When [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] left Cybertron, secretly pursuing alternate energy sources, Megatron ordered [[Bludgeon (G1)|Bludgeon]] to investigate his files, secretly assigning Soundwave to investigate Bludgeon. {{storylink|Spotlight: Shockwave}}

When Deadlock deserted the cause at some point during the war, Megatron sent the bounty hunter [[Lockdown (G1)|Lockdown]] to bring him back. {{storylink|Drift issue 2|Drift #2}}

Later, a Decepticon scientist, [[Thunderwing (G1)|Thunderwing]], came to Megatron with a revolutionary, controversial plan to stave off this energy death by [[Pretender|polydermal grafting]], a process where they encased themselves in "symbiotic carapaces", or shells created from living tissue. When Megatron dismissed him angrily and cut him down, Thunderwing did not abandon his research, but instead experimented on himself. As a result, Thunderwing became so powerful that Megatron had to join forces with Optimus Prime to stop him. This battle at [[Thunderhead Pass]] accelerated the apocalypse destined to befall Cybertron, leaving it an uninhabitable, radioactive husk and forcing both armies to continue their war on other worlds. Megatron advocated that they simply destroy Cybertron to ensure that Thunderwing was destroyed, but Prime refused, and threatened to stop Megatron if he tried. Megatron agreed not to destroy the planet, but warned Prime that whatever happened was on his head. Shortly after the last big push by the Decepticons, Cybertron was abandoned by both factions.

Seven hundred [[Units of time|stellar cycles]] later, in current times, it was discovered that as a result of digging through Shockwave's files, Bludgeon had resurrected Thunderwing's dangerous project, as well as Thunderwing himself. After being informed of Thunderwing's attack on [[Nebulos]], Megatron dispatched the [[Predacon (G1)|Predacons]] in the ''[[Thanatos]]'' to Cybertron, authorizing [[Razorclaw (G1)|Razorclaw]] to do whatever was necessary to destroy Thunderwing, including the destruction of Cybertron. {{storylink|Stormbringer issue 3|Stormbringer #3}} However, Optimus Prime and the [[Wrecker]]s were able to thwart both Bludgeon and Thunderwing, and so destruction of the planet was averted. {{storylink|Stormbringer issue 4|Stormbringer #4}}

Megatron, meanwhile, was on Earth, investigating Starscream's infiltration team. He discovered that Starscream had stumbled across [[Ultra-Energon|Ore-13]], an incredible energy source which had been [[Spotlight: Shockwave|mysteriously seeded there]], and that the [[Air Commander]] was planning to use it to usurp Megatron's command—this annoyed him, as he had thought they were beyond such power games. {{storylink|Infiltration issue 4|Infiltration #4}} After seriously damaging the hesitantly rebellious [[Skywarp (G1)|Skywarp]] and [[Blitzwing (G1)|Blitzwing]], {{storylink|Infiltration issue 5|Infiltration #5}} Megatron ordered the AWOL team to stand down and then took on a super-powered Starscream. Though the Ore-13 made Starscream a formidable adversary, Megatron was still more deadly than he, and Starscream was destroyed. All throughout, he acted eerily calm & measured and made both Autobot and Decepticon wet themselves in fear. {{storylink|Infiltration issue 6|Infiltration #6}}

Megatron took stock of Starscream's progress on Earth in light of the discovery of Ore-13 and called a meeting to make Starscream's former troops aware, in no uncertain terms, that any further insurrections would be met with deadly force. {{storylink|Escalation issue 1|Escalation #1}} Initiating phase two of infiltration protocol, Megatron stole a prototype [[Psycho-Prism]] from [[Doctor Doom]]'s laboratory. He created an "array" structure in [[Latveria]] as a base of operations. He sent Skywarp and Thundercracker to the nearby country of [[Symkaria]] in hopes they will blame Latveria and start a war. He activated the Psycho-Prism which produced an aggression wave that made nearby humans more aggressive in order to further increase international tensions. {{storylink|Man and Machine, Part One}} Doctor Doom, not appreciating the Decepticons' setting up shop in his country, tried to remove their base with an army of [[Doombot]]s. Megatron had no problem repelling them. {{storylink|Man and Machine, Part Two}}

The [[Avengers]] arrived and Megatron let them enter his facility where he scanned them looking for a suitable sample to leech power from as part of their [[mirror response mode]]. He selected [[Spider-Man]] and captured him. The remaining Avengers retreated and Megatron energized the facilities energy shield. The Autobots arrived and were attacked by the Avengers thanks to their heightened aggression. {{storylink|Man and Machine, Part One}}

Megatron energized himself and all of his troops except Ramjet, who he didn't trust. Outside, the Autobots were able to nullify the aggression wave amongst the Avengers and they teamed up and started attacking the array. Megatron sent out his energized troops to repel the invaders. {{storylink|Man and Machine, Part Two}} Ratchet, Prowl, and [[Luke Cage]] were able to breech the array's defenses. Megatron captured Ratchet and Luke Cage while Ramjet and Megatron's new ally, Doctor Doom captured Prowl. When his forces outside were defeated, Megatron—on the advice of Doctor Doom—sent a holographic message to those outside that he would kill his captives if they did not surrender. They did not surrender and instead renewed their attack. Megatron blamed Doctor Doom for the failure and turned on him.

Megatron did not go through with his threat of killing the hostages. Instead he went out to face his attackers himself, holding Luke Cage. {{storylink|Man and Machine, Part Three}} He was beating the opposition until Prowl, Ratchet, and Spider-Man [[orbital jump|orbital bounced]] out of the facility. They had been freed by Doctor Doom and the two Autobots used the Decepticon equipment to energize themselves with [[Wolverine (superhero)|Wolverine]]'s super power. This added firepower led to his defeat. His Psycho-Prism was destroyed so there was no point in continuing the fight and ordered his troops to retreat using an [[emergency warp-out]]. Megatron himself stuck around awhile hoping to beat someone up, but Spider-Man wrapped him up in webbing, Luke Cage knocked him over, and the Autobots opened fire on him while he was down. He finally warped-out taunting Optimus Prime on the way out. {{storylink|Man and Machine, Part Four}}

After getting the infiltration protocols back on track, Megatron stayed instead of leaving Earth in the hands of a new commander. He decided to try out his new [[Size changing|mass-displacing]] handgun [[Alternate mode|altmode]] and the Ore-13 power. {{storylink|Escalation issue 2|Escalation #2}} He personally took charge of the Decepticon subterfuge in [[Brasnya]], guiding the facsimile of [[Georgi Koska]] in an attempt to escalate an international incident into a full polarizing war, and acting as Koska's personal weapon. (His alt-mode only works when a human is holding and firing him, which left him at a disadvantage against the Autobots, who could simply pin him down in that form. Maybe Megatron just wants to be held.) {{storylink|Escalation issue 3|Escalation #3}}

When Optimus Prime arrived, Megatron transformed and started a full-blown to-the-death melee with his longtime foe for all the nuts and bolts—this surprised Optimus, who accused Megatron of letting the Ore-13 power go to his head and causing him to be "some raging braggart". Even with his fusion cannon disabled almost right away, Megatron gained the upper hand due to his Ore-13 high. Beating his foe down, he squeezed Prime's spark casing and seemingly killed him; {{storylink|Escalation issue 5|Escalation #5}} aghast, the Autobots moved into a full but ineffective counterattack, their only edge being that Megatron had no long-range guns left. However, Prime's death was a desperate ruse, and the Autobot leader countered with a surprise attack on Megatron, able to exploit Ore-13's weakness—the more it's used, the faster it burns itself out. Megatron almost collapsed from power loss and was forced to have Skywarp take him to safety before the Autobots could kill him.

Upon returning to base and being refueled and repaired, Megatron was hopping mad. Mad enough to prematurely call in his ultimate living weapon—[[Sixshot]]—despite [[Astrotrain (G1)|Astrotrain]]'s panic attack on hearing that. {{storylink|Escalation issue 6|Escalation #6}}

During this time, he discovered a plot by [[Ramjet (G1)|Ramjet]] to overthrow him. Without saying a word, he beat the living [[Slag (slang)|slag]] out of the attempted traitor before tearing him apart and keeping his head as a trophy. {{storylink|Spotlight: Ramjet}}

Upon Sixshot's arrival, Megatron ordered him to utterly destroy the Autobots, throwing out the methodical "Phase" strategy. The other Decepticons were worried that Megatron was losing his grip—and since they were too scared to tell him that, they decided to revive Starscream to do it for them. {{storylink|Devastation issue 1|Devastation #1}} Before Sixshot could obliterate the Autobots, Megatron recalled him to deal with a new threat—the [[Reaper|Reapers]]. {{storylink|Devastation issue 4|Devastation #4}} Megatron deduced that the other Decepticons betrayed him by awakening Starscream, but decided not to punish them '''yet''', due to the present task of destroying the Reapers. {{storylink|Devastation issue 5|Devastation #5}} After these foes were dead, Megatron was forced to accept Starscream and the others when it became clear the humans were aware of them now. {{storylink|Devastation issue 6|Devastation #6}}

Some time later, the Autobots were led into a trap; false information was planted by an [[Sunstreaker (G1)|Autobot traitor]], and they were led into an ambush and soundly defeated by the Decepticons and the newly-created [[Devastator (G1)|Devastator]]. After personally ripping the [[Matrix of Leadership]] out of Optimus Prime's chest, Megatron planned to drop the Autobots into the midst of [[Insecticon swarm|three thousand horrendous things he had created]] on Cybertron. When all but Prime had gone through the space bridge, Prime grabbed Blitzwing's gun and somehow saved the other Autobots from certain death, closing the portal. Optimus was critically injured by the space bridge, which fried his circuits. {{storylink|All Hail Megatron issue 7|All Hail Megatron #7}} This caused Starscream's status among the Decepticons and their concern about Megatron to go ''way'' down, with former dissenters like [[Skywarp (G1)|Skywarp]] becoming Megatron fanboys. {{storylink|All Hail Megatron issue 1|All Hail Megatron #1}} By use of Sunstreaker's input with Starscream and Bombshell's experimentation on [[Hunter O'Nion]], Megatron was able to defeat [[Omega Supreme (G1)|almost]] all the Autobots in the galaxy...

A year after the defeat of Optimus, Megatron decided to take Earth and make it the new Decepticon homeworld. He arrived on the front lines as the Decepticons attacked [[New York City]], humiliating Starscream by outdoing him in destroying things with just one shot from his fusion cannon. When the US Air Force responded with an F-22 squad, as a show of force Megatron had Soundwave disable the human's missile targeting, followed by the Decepticons just standing there shrugging off bullets before making their attack. After one jet was damaged by Skywarp, [[DJ (G1)|its pilot]] attempted to take out Megatron with a suicide run, but the Decepticon leader calmly swatted the incoming plane, causing it to explode. As flames rose from the wreckage, Megatron emerged, completely undamaged, laughing maniacally. {{storylink|All Hail Megatron issue 1|All Hail Megatron #1}} Megatron continued to direct the Decepticon assault on New York, dispatching [[Frenzy (G1)|Frenzy]] to mop up the U.S. Army's ground forces and ordering the [[Constructicon (G1)|Constructicons]] to combine into [[Devastator (G1)|Devastator]] and destroy the underwater tunnels leading out of the city. {{storylink|All Hail Megatron issue 2|All Hail Megatron #2}}

His plan executed flawlessly, the Decepticons continued their assault on the major cities of the United States, disabling or nullifying any attempt by the army or navy to counterattack. As he surveyed his handiwork in New York, he ordered Hook and the Constructicons to begin building ''something'' in the once-great human city and appreciated their "sacrifice" in using "substandard" building materials. Soon thereafter he was joined by Starscream, with whom he had a heart to heart and revealed he believed Starscream to be the embodiment of the Decepticon cause, but that Starscream was blind to realizing this. {{storylink|All Hail Megatron issue 3|All Hail Megatron #3}}

When the humans had fallen, Megatron made a propaganda speech to his men in the ruins of New York. He heaped great praise on their efforts, both on Earth and across the galaxy, announcing they had finally crushed the Autobots for good. {{storylink|All Hail Megatron issue 4|All Hail Megatron #4}} After making this speech (and dispatching Ratbat to attack a small group of mercenaries led by [[Spike Witwicky (G1)|Commander Witwicky]]), Megatron entered one of the "buildings" to gaze at his newly prized possession... the Autobot Matrix of Leadership that he stole from Optimus. {{storylink|All Hail Megatron issue 5|All Hail Megatron #5}}

That praise turned out to be empty, as Starscream started noticing that Megatron didn't have a plan now victory had been achieved, and the smashy-smash fun on Earth was him trying to distract the troops—because now he had an army of evil sociopathic murderers with nothing to murder and a doctrine of taking power. Not even smashing up [[Israel]] made him feel better. {{storylink|All Hail Megatron issue 6|All Hail Megatron #6}} Eventually, Starscream made his move, revealing to Megatron that he had swayed the Insecticons to his side. Megatron easily swatted the insects aside, however, and explained to Starscream that he had known about his plans all along. Unfortunately, he hadn't anticipated Starscream to have rallied the Constructicons backing him up, and found himself having to fight the mighty Devastator. {{storylink|All Hail Megatron issue 10|All Hail Megatron #10}}

As the battle was interrupted by an attack from human jets, Megatron and Starscream put their differences aside momentarily to organize a defense. Megatron was not at all surprised by the attack, as he had planned the invasion—nay, the ''war''—down to the smallest detail. He explained to Starscream that while the Decepticon forces may have no real goal at the moment, he planned to remodel them into something greater after the war was done. Then he was suddenly interrupted by something he ''hadn't'' planned for: the return of the Autobots. After assuring Starscream that he'd be leader someday (just not right now), Megatron confronted Optimus Prime again, accusing the Autobot of coming for his Matrix rather than truly caring about Earth. He also revealed that Prime's supposedly "innocent" humans were planning to nuke New York, killing millions of their own just to get rid of the Decepticons. {{storylink|All Hail Megatron issue 11|All Hail Megatron #11}}

Prime retorted that it wasn't about the humans, it was about the difference between him and Megatron—the difference between Autobots and Decepticons. The two came to blows, and Megatron eventually came out on top by throwing Prime into a building. He ordered the Decepticons to leave Earth, leaving the Autobots to be killed by the humans' nuke... only to be shot in the face by [[Spike Witwicky (G1)|Spike Witwicky]], wielding a powerful weapon reverse-engineered from Cybertronian technology. Injured and disoriented by the blast, Megatron was finished off when Optimus Prime got back up and smashed his face in with his own fusion cannon. As he wanted to ''take'' leadership rather than just have it fall in his hands, Starscream picked up his damaged leader and took him off the planet. {{storylink|All Hail Megatron issue 12|All Hail Megatron #12}}

On board Astrotrain, Megatron was put on life support and was tended to by Soundwave and his cassettes. {{storylink|All Hail Megatron issue 13|Uneasy Lies the Head}}

The Decepticons eventually settled on a desolate asteroid and Megatron spent the next three years in a [[CR chamber|CR tank]]. He was somehow conscious and aware of current events during his recovery. Megatron was forced to simply watch as most of the Decepticon army languished in inactivity and slowly began to unravel under Starscream's leadership. {{storylink|All His Engines}} But despite Megatron's mental health and awareness, Soundwave eventually realized that his body was beyond repair. He convinced Shockwave, who had been given access to plenty of resources for his space bridge project, to help him build a brand new body for Megatron's consciousness to inhabit. They were successful, and even included space bridge technology in Megatron himself, allowing him to create warp portals to Earth.

Back in action, Megatron devised a plan to destabilize the relationship between the humans and Autobots on Earth. Together with Soundwave and Shockwave, he chopped up his old body and used it to create human-scaled replicas of his former gun mode, containing small pieces of his own consciousness. Starscream caught them in the act, but wasn't too shocked to learn of Megatron's return, as he knew it had been inevitable. Megatron was unable to take back leadership of the Decepticons at the moment, however, as Starscream was in possession of the Matrix of Leadership, an object which Megatron considered a threat due to its mysterious nature. {{storylink|Revenge of the Decepticons Part 2: Altered Carbon}}

When [[Hot Rod (G1)|Rodimus]] infiltrated the Decepticons' asteroid base and recovered the Matrix from Starscream, Megatron stepped in to intercept the Autobot. Rodimus panicked when coming upon the reborn Decepticon commander and held up the Matrix to try and ward him off. But Megatron simply shot Rodimus at point-blank range, blasting him out into space, Matrix and all. Intent on reestablishing his authority, Megatron then informed Soundwave to gather the other Decepticons so he could address them. {{storylink|Heart Like a Wheel}}

Megatron and Shockwave then sent a box full of Megatron guns (and his old head) through a space bridge to Earth, where it landed in [[Quetzaltenango]], [[Mexico]]. Without the knowledge of any human government, the powerful weapons were then smuggled into the United States by gun enthusiasts and civilians looking for anti-Transformer weaponry. This allowed Megatron's consciousness to spread throughout the land, until it was focused enough to contact one particular owner of a Megatron gun: [[Joe Gladki]]. He deceived and manipulated the paranoid human, and eventually convinced him to perform an assassination attempt on [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]], the new Autobot leader. {{storylink|Revenge of the Decepticons Part 2: Altered Carbon}} In their ignorance, the Autobots then mistook Gladki's gun for Megatron himself and held it captive. {{storylink|Revenge of the Decepticons Part 1: The Demolished Man}}

With the Autobots in chaos, Megatron started the next phase of his plan and returned to Earth personally, where he used his new stealth bomber mode to shoot down a plane carrying Optimus Prime and several other Autobots. He then hunted down [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]], who was in charge following the loss of both Bumblebee and Prime, and killed some Mexicans attacking Magnus's troops with Megatron guns just because. With his powerful new body, he effortlessly defeated the entire Autobot team and killed some of their [[Skywatch]] allies. Ultra Magnus tried to stop him, telling Megatron that he was back for the Autobots and not the humans, but Megatron assured him that humanity was his real target. {{storylink|Revenge of the Decepticons Part 3: Woken Furies}}

Megatron revealed that his entire scheme was a plot to try and crush Optimus Prime's spirit and ruin the fragile alliance between humanity and the Autobots by arming deranged and unstable humans with advanced weaponry based on his old body, thus forcing the Autobots to choose between fighting the humans or allowing them to kill them. He dumped several of the Autobots in a heavily populated area and mind controlled three already paranoid humans to kill the Autobots. He also took Ultra Magnus hostage, having Soundwave keep a weapon trained on him as he taunted Prime about the no win situation he had created. However, he also revealed to Prime that he was controlling the humans, and in a bid to distract him enough to break the mental control, Prime shot Soundwave in the head, badly wounding him. Distraught and furious that his faithful lieutenant had been wounded, Megatron chose to flee to get Soundwave medical attention, forcing him to break communication. Unfortunately however, despite this Megatron's plan succeeded. Jazz was forced to kill a human to save Bumblebee's life, increasing the paranoia and hatred that humanity felt for the Autobots. {{storylink|Revenge of the Decepticons Part 4: Burning Chrome}}

With Soundwave wounded severely, Megatron took him to a temporary lab that Shockwave had set up on Earth, to have Soundwave repaired. However Shockwave noted that much of the Decepticon's resources had been used to construct Megatron's new body and the new space bridge, and it would take a great deal of time to properly rebuild Soundwave. It was at this point that Optimus Prime attacked again and after threatening Shockwave, goaded Megatron into a confrontation. Megatron ordered his troops not to attack Prime, wanting them to watch as he crippled the Autobot leader and left him for the humans to kill. However one thing Megatron didn't suspect was for Prime to be desperate enough to drop a satellite on top of him, in an effort to kill him once and for all.

However Megatron's new body, empowered greatly by Ore-13, was virtually unharmed by the attack. He beat Prime senseless but then, shockingly, surrendered to the Autobots and was promptly imprisoned inside Omega Supreme. Optimus demanded to know why he surrendered and Megatron taunted him by revealing that Spike Witwicky had murdered a Decepticon in cold blood and told him the humans couldn't be trusted, mocking Prime's desire to work with the humans and warning him that he had doomed his Autobots by allying with Skywatch. {{storylink|Revenge of the Decepticons Part 5: Enemy Mine}}

Prime immediately had Prowl begin investigating Spike and Skywatch, and one of the first things Prowl did was quiz Megatron on what he knew about Spike's activities. Megatron told him what he needed to know after a little verbal sparring. {{storylink|Police Action: Prologue}}

When Rodimus returned to Earth and warned the Autobots that [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]] had taken control of Cybertron, now habitable once more thanks to Alpha Trion repairing the ravaged world and Ironhide and Sunstreaker having wiped out the Swarm, Optimus decided to lead the Autobots to claim their homeworld back from the insane Galvatron. He also decided to bring both Megatron and the Matrix, believing that the humans would be less at risk of Decepticon attacks if Megatron and the Matrix were both off earth. {{storylink|Space Opera—Final Tableaux: Orphans of the Helix}}

On the way to Cybertron, Megatron was fully scanned by both Ratchet and [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]], who, along with [[Xaaron]] had come to assist the Autobots in making sure Megatron was secure and to provide legal counsel in how to treat him as he was now a prisoner of war. Megatron was silent while they confirmed that he had no concealed weaponry on him. Shortly after this, Prime himself came to talk to Megatron, wanting for once to have an actual conversation with his old foe and try to make peace, seeing the situation as a chance to finally end the war. Initially skeptical of Prime's reasons for talking to him, when Prime released Megatron from his bonds. Megatron challenged Prime's motto of "Freedom is the right of all sentient beings" by pointing out that it was he, not Prime, who had stood up for the Cybertronians who were treated as little more than slaves by the corrupt ruling class of Cybertron and claiming that the only true way to bring peace to the universe was through conquest. After arguing about their conflicting viewpoints the two began to remember old battles and the numerous near death experiences, even laughing together as they shared war stories. It was then that Optimus tried to reach out to Megatron, offering him the chance to end the war once and for all with a handshake, telling him that all he had to do was tell him that he wanted the war to end and it would. Megatron appeared to consider it for a moment but ultimately remained silent. {{storylink|Chaos Theory Part 1}}

Under pressure to decide whether Megatron would be executed or imprisoned should he be found guilty of crimes against the species and genocide, Prime confronted Megatron and asked him if he regretted any of his actions. Megatron coldly replied that he did not and in fact only regretted that he hadn't done more and killed more Autobots, claiming that he would kill Autobots solely for pleasure and that as long as anyone stood in his way he would kill them. He also claimed that Optimus was secretly glad for the war, taunting him in a manner similar to the way Whirl had once taunted Megatron by pointing out that if the war had never happened Optimus would have lived and died as a nobody, with no one knowing or caring who he was, but because of Megatron Optimus had become famous and the most respected and worshipped Cybertronian of all. It was a taunt designed to make Prime want to kill him and Optimus nearly did, activating the Variable Voltage Harness. Omega Supreme managed to cut the power in time and Megatron, struggling to stay conscious, offered Prime his thanks for saving his life all those years ago in Rodion. Shocked by his actions Prime realised that Megatron wanted to die and wanted him to be the one to kill him.

This was confirmed when he asked Megatron what HE wanted his punishment to be if found guilty at his trial. Death or imprisonment. Megatron calmly replied that he chose death. {{storylink|Chaos Theory Part 2}}

On the way to Cybertron, Megatron demanded to know who or what was attacking the planet, questioning whether it was Starscream, Shockwave or even Thunderwing. Optimus refused to answer, stating that now Megatron was a prisoner everything going on outside the walls of his cell was no longer his concern and questioning why Megatron was suddenly so sentimental. Megatron ominously noted that Cybertron was more than just a metal world and that if it was in the wrong hands they were all in danger. As the battle with the [[Sweep]]s and Galvatron raged across Cybertron, Megatron chose this moment to reveal the ace he had up his sleeve: The Autobots had confiscated a number of the guns made from his old body, which he was able to take control of and use to upgrade himself into a secondary armored mode. This allowed him to break free of his restraints within Omega Supreme, cackling insanely as he broke loose and confronted both the Autobots and the gathered Sweeps, declaring that Cybertron belonged to him and he would not allow Galvatron to have it. {{storylink|Chaos Part Two: Numbers}}

Tearing through the Sweeps with ease, Megatron summoned his Decepticon forces to kill the Autobots gathered on Cybertron, using a beacon built into his new body to lead them to exactly where he was. While Megatron fought the Sweeps his Decepticons came close to overwhelming the battered and exhausted Autobots, before [[D-Void]], acting through the [[Darkness (G1)|Heart of Darkness]], summoned all the Decepticons to combine into a gigantic monster along with the Sweeps, a monster that began attacking Cybertron and the Autobots. Megatron ordered Prime to come join him in battle against the monster but Prime replied that as he had to deal with Galvatron, it would be up to Megatron to stop the advancing monstrosity. {{storylink|Chaos Part Three: Kings}}

The cube crashed on Earth, in the Japanese town of [[Hoshinochō]], where it shattered into innumerable fragments that were scattered far and wide. To search for the cube shards, Megatron and his Decepticons took on the forms of local vehicles and devices, so they could operate in secret. [[Optimus Prime (G1)#Henkei! Henkei! Bun Bun manga|Optimus Prime]] and his Autobots had also followed the Cube to Earth, and so the Transformers' war continued in secret on this new world. {{storylink|Kingdom of Giants}}

Ten years later, Megatron discovered that the humans had a "secret weapon" of sorts in their quest: They had allied themselves with the human boy [[Akira Kihara]], who possessed the incredible powers of a "[[Booster]]", one of a small number of beings in the universe born with the power to detect and manipulate the energies of the Energon Cube. Seeking the boy's power for his own, Megatron struck, but was repelled when Akira used his powers to their fullest. The events that unfolded during the conflict confirmed Megatron's suspicions: Wataru was also a Booster! {{storylink|Wataru's Power}} Once again seeking to take the power of a Booster for himself, Megatron tracked Prime and Wataru when they went on a mission to investigate a local relic (in actuality, a cube shard), then struck hard. Taunting Prime with the memory of the last Booster that he had allowed to die, Megatron goaded the Autobot leader into a ferocious battle with their energon-axe and flail. Throughout the duel, Megatron challenged Prime's philosophy and beliefs, eventually striking home with the claim that Prime had hoped to use Wataru's power to defeat him. With Prime's focus broken by this sadly-true accusation, Megatron was able to lay Prime low and seize Wataru, informing the boy that he would not allow him to die like Akira had if he came with him willingly. Naturally, Wataru refused, and activated his powers, forcing Megatron back with a barrier shield; this, Megatron realized, was what had deflected his shot during his first encounter with Wataru, rather than Prime's blast. Wataru used his powers to heal Optimus and power-up his energon axe into a mighty sword, which Prime used to tear a massive gash in Megatron's armor.
