Robot mode is the form that Transformers have outside of their alternate mode. Although generally a bipedal humanoid in shape, the robot mode is not always so. Prominent examples include the Mini-Cassettes with animal based forms, as the cassette would be considered their alternate mode, while the "beast mode" would be considered their robot mode. Another unique situation concerns the Mutants, Transformers who have lost their robot mode but acquired two beast modes.

Generally speaking robot mode provides greater freedom of movement and better combat capabilities (though this can also be said of alternate modes which are designed for combat). Often, the alternate mode will be given or taken to better facilitate the robot mode, such as repair (which is what Teletraan I did with the Autobots and Decepticons aboard the Ark) or for protecting the robot mode (which was done to protect the sparks of the Maximals and Predacons during the Beast Wars). After taking an alternate mode, the robot mode will display characteristics of the alternate mode.
Where the Decepticon cassette with a cat-mode is a master of moving about undetected, it is fitting that his Autobot counterpart is one of the best at tracking down robots who don't want to be found. Steeljaw is a tenacious tracker of unmatched skill, whose olfactory sensors can track even the faintest scent for a range of 800 miles. All business when on the job, he can come off as cold, even rude to others, but that's just his professionalism and determination getting the better of him. Off the clock, he loves to investigate odors of all shapes and sizes, and Earth has many new and unusual smells for him to enjoy - the perfume of young women being one of his favorites. Steeljaw has a nearly unbreakable bite, from which he takes his name, and is armed with two solar-powered pellet guns. He can electromagnetize himself to stick to surfaces in cassette mode. His only real weakness is a tendency to rust.
Generation 1
Marvel UK future timelines
In an alternate timeline of the year 2008, Steeljaw was stationed at Autobot City: Earth when it was sacked by Quintessons. He survived, hidden within Blaster's tape compartment, and was activated by Hot Rod and Arcee to help them fight off the invaders. Space Pirates!

Generation 2
G.I. Joe Starring Snake-Eyes and the Transformers
In the normal timeline (albeit in a G.I. Joe comic), Steeljaw was part of a team sent by Optimus Prime to stop a Cobra-rebuilt Megatron. Steeljaw was killed rather abruptly, being the first victim of Megatron's new "hyper-velocity" rail gun. Final Transformations
Animated continuity
Scramble City OVA (Japan-only)
Megatron sent Ratbat to find the secret location of Metroplex's construction site. Blaster ejected his own cassette troops, Steeljaw among them, to counter the Decepticon threat. His cassette army failed, allowing Ratbat to slip through and discover the location of Metroplex. Scramble City

Generation 1 cartoon
In 2005, during Megatron's attack on Autobot City, Soundwave ejected several of his cassette warriors to prevent Blaster from sending a radio transmission to Optimus Prime on Moonbase One. To fend off Soundwave's cassettes, Blaster ejected his own force, including Steeljaw. Blaster's cassettes and Soundwave's cassettes appeared to be evenly matched, and Steeljaw had no small bit of fun gnawing on Rumble. The Transformers: The Movie

In the year 2006, Steeljaw was summoned by Rodimus Prime to help track down Daniel Witwicky, after he vanished from a dignitary's party on Cybertron. Steeljaw tracked the boy and Grimlock to an old abandoned corridor and a hidden chamber, where the Quintessons had once exiled their unwanteds into other dimensions. Along with Ultra Magnus, Blaster and the other cassettes, Steeljaw followed the trail into Menonia. He ultimately found Daniel trying to free a great sorcerer known as the Golden One from a tomb. With Ramhorn's help, they broke open the mouth of the cave, and the Golden One helped the Autobots defeat the Quintesson exile who had enslaved the locals. Madman's Paradise

Steeljaw also helped recover a lost Quintesson journal, The Quintesson Journal, briefly fought alongside Rodimus Prime and Ultra Magnus in Europe The Ultimate Weapon, and was chosen as a "Primitive" by Primacron's Assistant to face the threat of Tornedron. Call of the Primitives

Headmasters cartoon (Japan-only)
After Blaster was killed in a duel with Soundwave, Steeljaw, his cassette partners, Wheelie and Daniel Witwicky pleaded with Rodimus Prime to rebuild their friend. Rodimus eventually caved and rebuilt Blaster as Twincast.

:(Note: In this series, Steeljaw had the power to talk in normal Japanese.)

Teletraan Go! Go! comics
As Teletraan 15 recovered from her injuries at the hands (and mouth) of Galvatron, Blaster gave her a cassette tape to cheer her up, saying, "A princess like you deserves happier music." When she listened to it, she discovered that it was in fact entirely full of depressing songs.

It was also apparently Steeljaw, who became her companion in her next adventure, when she visited the Generation 2 timeline and encountered the Jetfire of that era. Steeljaw commented that the Autobot smelled "like a warrior I know" and asked if he was the same person in a new body.

Steeljaw accompanied and protected Teletraan 15 on her journey as she filled his recording space with data on the Transformers whom she had been sent to study. The observing Teletraan 10, on the other hand, was more than perturbed by Steeljaw's fondness for the smell of young women, and threatened to reveal publicly his tendency to rust. When the pair returned to the artificial satellite Nana, Teletraan 15 was suddenly possessed by the disembodied spirit of Starscream... and Steeljaw was not seen in her company again.

Dreamwave continuity
Steeljaw was depicted among Blaster and the cassettes as part of the resistance movement organized against Shockwave on Cybertron by Hot Rod and Kup. He participated in the final conflict against the Decepticons and the Guardian Robots, bringing the planet back under Autobot control. Countdown to Extinction (comic issue)

Built around the undersea crash site of their former starship, Decepticon Headquarters served as the main base of operations for Megatron's troops on Earth. The base included several new buildings, and a docking tower, a giant telescoping "elevator" which allowed the Decepticons to reach the surface without having to get wet and risk getting rusty.

Fiction
Generation 1 cartoon
In the months after the Decepticons' new space cruiser crashed into the ocean, they built several buildings around it to serve as their main base. Transport to Oblivion

Being located underwater, Decepticon Headquarters was quite prone to flooding; its walls were breached on at least four known occasions. The first was due to enemy action. The Decepticons had kidnapped Sparkplug Witwicky; in the process of rescuing him, Cliffjumper uses his glass-gas to burn a hole in the base. Brawn later punched another hole in the wall before the Autobots made their escape. The Ultimate Doom, Part 1

When the Decepticons used the space bridge to move Cybertron to Earth's orbit, it caused massive natural disasters which the Decepticons hoped to make Energon with. Unfortunately, the space cruiser was damaged, with rocks from a nearby extension falling on the base and breaching the hull. Also, the docking tower snapped in half due to a tidal wave, flooding much of the base. That's what happens when Rumble is responsible for material acquisition. The Ultimate Doom, Part 2 The Decepticons spent some time repairing the damage and cleaning up the flooding. Countdown to Extinction

When Carly allied herself with the Autobots, she took it upon herself to sabotage Decepticon Headquarters, placing bombs on the hull. Unfortunately, when it went off, she had been captured and placed in the very room that was being flooded. The Decepticons sealed off the rest of the base, keeping it dry, and left the human to drown, unaware that Ironhide rescued her. The Immobilizer

Later, after the Sky Platform, a hovering energy collecting station built by the Constructicons, was lost, the Decepticons fled back to the space cruiser. However, Powerglide directed the station to sink directly above the space cruiser's location. Megatron ordered Soundwave to activate the base's force fields, only to learn that the Decepticons had never installed force fields. As the station came crashing down, Megatron assigned the Decepticons to their most difficult task to date...clean up the mess the station's impact had made of the base. They probably made Starscream do it. The Girl Who Loved Powerglide

It is unknown what happend to the base when the Decepticons fully conquered Cybertron and abandoned Earth.

::The cyber-virus is an evil... thing in the Dreamwave portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

Megatron's cyber-virus fuses human DNA with Tansformer central circuitry. The resulting virus spreads organically, then solidifies into metal, transforming Earth's landscape into a semblance of the planet Cybertron.

Once it begins spreading, the virus is self-sustaining.

Fiction
Megatron created the cyber-virus by merging the essences of Lazarus' captured soldiers with the captured Autobots. The process left the Autobots near death, and the humans... not-so-near.

Wheeljack invented an anti-viral weapon, directly channeling the Autobots' life-energy to halt the virus' progress, and reverse the changes it had wrought.

Though the cyber-virus' transformation was reversed, the humans transformed by it seem not to have survived the reversion.

Set before the war began, the State Games was an inter-city competition created by the Autobot Overlord to facilitate goodwill between the various city states such as Iacon, Tarn and Vos. Tensions had been rising on Cybertron as new Transformer life was created unabated putting increased pressure on the planet's resources.

Megatron, a citizen of Tarn, was a successful but particularly vicious athlete. Optimus Prime was very much his equal, and the two shared a somewhat acrimonious sporting rivalry.

The games in this story were being held in Tarn. The Vos athletic team broke into Tarn's power generator with the purpose of planting a bomb, destroying Tarn, while at the same time leaving evidence to suggest that it was Iacon who were responsible. The resulting war would decimate Tarn and Iacon, leaving Vos (ruled by a criminal syndicate headed by Starscream) the most powerful city on Cybertron. However the team were caught in the process. The bomb still went off, but not before Vos' guilt became known. Tarn was instantly nearly completely destroyed and the war between Vos and Tarn began.

The commencement of hostilities trapped the athletes and the Autobot Overlord in what was now the frontline of a inter-city war. The Autobot Overlord was ancient and frail, and required frequent care. Megatron and Optimus Prime accompanied the Overlord's two bodyguards Ravage and Nightstalker in attempting to return the Overlord to Iacon through the battlefield. However the fighting became too intense, and Optimus Prime left the other three with the Overlord to go to Iacon alone to gather reinforcements. While Prime was away Nightstalker sacrificed himself in a suicide explosion leaving only Ravage and Megatron to stand guard. Megatron, seeing that Cybertron was about to go through a major political change, left the Overlord to die, with Ravage following suit.

When the war between Vos and Tarn had finished, Megatron convinced the survivors to unite as a new faction, Decepticons, against Iacon, who Megatron was convinced could have intervened to prevent the war.
Items of note
* This issue is prefaced with the title "A Tale from Cybertron".
* Optimus Prime is but a successful Iaconian athlete in this story. The Autobot Overlord seems to be the (possibly figurehead) leader of Cybertron. Emirate Xaaron and High Councilor Tomaandi appear to be Iacon politicians, with General Traachon being the leader of the Iacon military.
* This story precedes "And There Shall Come...a Leader!" chronologically and retcons that story's stance that Megatron and Prime did not know each other before the war.
* The concept of the Decepticons having their origins in gladiatorial games was visited again in both the Dreamwave and IDW continuities.
* IDW's Megatron Origin is in many ways a retelling of "State Games", using combat games (albeit illegal), economic depression and anger towards the politics of Iacon as major plot points.
