Holomatter

208.40.182.138: /* Known Avatars */

Holomatter makes its appearance in the Transformers: Infiltration comic series. It is used by the Autobots infiltrating Earth to create fake drivers for their alternate forms so as not to arouse suspicion among the human populace.

The Autobot Ratchet mentions "holomatter generators". These are presumably a network of power and / or projection systems scattered across his chassis. These devices are small enough to fit within a standard Transformer and, aside from the image of the fake driver they project, give off no visual or auditory emissions. The generators operate like a highly-advanced holographic projector; they are capable of creating an image a considerable distance away from the Autobot they are installed within. The image is projected not only through the Autobot's skin (holomatter drivers have appeared both within and outside their Autobots, as far distant as several metres) but also through solid walls and even tens, possibly hundreds, of metres of intervening ground.

Two features of holomatter images separate them from "run of the mill" holographic technology, though. The first is that holomatter projections are actually solid. Although the actual strength of a holomatter avatar is yet to be established, Ratchet's handling of the SM-40 in Infiltration Issue 3 indicates that they can carry and manipulate small objects with ease. The holomatter avatar isn't just a friendly image to fool human beings; it's also the Autobot equivalent of a remotely operated vehicle, allwing Autobots to go places and perform actions that would otherwise be prevented by their size (and need to camouflage their true identities).

The second feature is potentially more interesting, though: A holomatter avatar projection somehow houses the consciousness of its generating Autobot, effectively making what would otherwise be a "simple" projection a direct extension of the Autobot's will. In a way, the avatar becomes part of the Autobot.

Overload jolt
In emergencies, a holomatter avatar can be used to deliver a massive electrical surge at very close range. This surge is powerful enough to momentarily disrupt the systems of a single Transformer, enough to cause disorientation and possibly unconsciousness for at least ten seconds. The cost of this surge is the holomatter generators themselves; whether an Autobot's internal systems will repair the damage given time or whether repair facilities are required is unknown; both the general pacing of the Infiltration series and the absence of any "repair" scenes in the comics suggest the former.

Limitations and weaknesses
One apparent problem with holomatter disguises is that they're limited by their programer's understanding of the lifeform they mimic. For most of their early time on Earth the holomatter avatars of the Autobots wore a "creepy-fixed-smile"; although Ratchet's avatar's upper face expressed worry, fear and resignation (and its eyes closed) during the Autobot's initial interactions with Hunter, Jimmy and Verity, its smile never disappeared. This lack of understanding may account for why otherwise male-seeming Autobots (for example, Bumblebee and Sunstreaker) have selected female avatars forthemselves. The question of if the Autobots can alter their voices to suit hasn't been answered yet.

After Optimus Prime arrived on Earth, Hunter was able to give the Autobots a "crash course in Earth culture" prior to his departure (Jazz noted that the Autobots never realised that humans found the smiles of their avatars disturbing). After this, the Autobots' holomatter avatars became much more expressive.

Finally, the unique transferral of consciousness to the avatar has risks; if not shut down in time, damage to the avatar can backlash along its link, causing pain to its Autobot.

Known Avatars
*Ratchet - Blond middle-aged, sightly hefty white male. Wears EMT uniform (without jacket).
*Bumblebee - Blonde and smokin' white female in baby-doll tee.
*Wheeljack - Balding "scientist-type" older white male w/ white hair, glasses, goatee.
*Jazz - Young black male with slight soul patch in a black suit.
*Sunstreaker - Blonde female who looks similar to Bumblebee's Avatar
*Ironhide - Older "military brass-type" white male with silver hair and mustache in a gray suit.
*Prowl - "Federal agent"-type: Red hair, receding hairline, middle-aged white male with dark sunglasses and a gray suit.
*Optimus Prime - Bearded trucker, well built, with white or blue shirt and baseball cap.
*Ultra Magnus - Nebulan scientist/security guards
Synopsis
The Throttlebots are under attack from the Combaticon Vortex. Although they are able to able to fight Vortex off with the help of Blaster, they attract unwanted human attention. When the Throttlebots stop for fuel at a Blackrock service station, the owner is able to report them to awaiting RAAT troops, who immediately attack. Although the Throttlebots are able to escape from RAAT, the battle gives Vortex the opportunity to track the Throttlebots once again. Meanwhile, Grimlock sends the Protectobots the retrieve Blaster and Goldbug.

Unable to refuel, the Throttlebots stop at a used car lot for the night. When the owner, "Big Steve" Ludwig, tries to have the damaged Rollbar towed, the Throttlebots reveal themselves to Big Steve to stop him. Big Steve promptly reports the Throttlebots to the authorities, and fills the Throttlebots' fuel tanks with soda to immobilize them.

When RAAT arrives to collect the Throttlebots, they are intercepted by the Combaticons, who intend to destroy the Throttlebots themselves. The Protectobots soon arrive on the scene, and prepare to do battle. Big Steve attempts to save his lot by proposing that the opposing teams bid on who gets to take the Throttlebots. The auction is short-lived, however, as Onslaught radios Swindle, commanding him to kill Big Steve. Blaster sees Swindle prepare to fire, and manages to throw off Swindle's aim just in time. The battle starts anew, and in the confusion, RAAT manages to take the Throttlebots away.

The Combaticons eventually retreat, and Blaster ensures that Big Steve doesn't get to profit from his friends misfortune by destroying a check RAAT had paid him for the information leading to their capture. Blaster is then arrested by the Protectobots for rebelling against Grimlock's command. He is to be returned to the Ark to be tried and executed....

The space bridge appears in several Transformer continuities. The exact properties of the space bridge vary, but typically they serve as a more convienient means moving Transformers from one planet to another than the traditional means of space travel.

Space bridges are nonetheless distinct from Transwarp in that their primary function is movement through space, not time, though the time taken to traverse a space bridge seems to depend on the technology used.

Generation 1 Cartoon
The Space Bridge was apparently first conceived by Shockwave in 1984, as a means of transport back to Cybertron for the Decepticons stranded on Earth, and to allow them to ferry energon cubes to revitalize the planet. Capable of virtually instantaneous transport to other galaxies, the mechanics of the Space Bridge are not particularly clear, but appear to either involve some form of interdimensional displacement, or matter-energy transformation.

The Cybertronic end of the Space Bridge is a fixture in Shockwave's command centre, where it takes the form of a cylindrical tube resembling an Earthen elevator, the top of which projects outside of the centre's dome; it is through this open end that transportees enter or depart. The Earth-based end of the Space Bridge is decidedly more flexible - the Decepticons frequently constructed new Space Bridges in various locations, normally in the form of a large metal rings. Early Earth-built Space Bridge access points proved somewhat unstable, and in order to shuttle energon cubes, transportees were required to ferry them over the bridge a small vehicle, which rolled into the ring on a train-like track, and then had to be piloted along a "beam of light" with particular concentration. Some Decepticons displayed pronounced horror at being chosen for this unenviable task, and in the very first practice run of the mechanism, the villains opted to use the captive Spike Witwicky, rather than risk any of their number. Megatron, however, soon proved able to traverse the bridge without a craft, and the technology was apparently refined so that transportees and energon cubes merely had to enter the ring on their own to make the journey.

The Space Bridge technology was taken to its ultimately extent when the Decepticons constructed three colossal pylons that would generate a "space pyramid," the apex of which extended to Cybertron's location in another galaxy. Using this, Cybertron was transported into Earth's orbit for a brief period, but was later blasted off into space to save the planet. Cybertron remained in the Milky Way galaxy, however - perhaps the reduced distance between it and Earth could account for the increased safety of Space Bridge transit. The process could, however, still go wrong, as it did when the Decepticons attempted to convert a baseball field into a new Space Bridge site, and a malfunction blasted a small group of Transformers to an alien world of giants. The Space Bridge was also used for planetary transportation once more when the Combaticon Onslaught wired his missile guidance systems into it and used it's powers to redirect the orbit of Earth, intended to send it spiralling into the sun, only to be stopped by an Autobot-Decepticon team-up.

Headmasters
Although the Space Bridge fell into disuse when the Autobots relcaimed Cybertron in 2005, rather than dismantle it since Vector Sigma maintained an Autobot power balance on the planet, thereby rendering the Decepticons unable to use it - it is apparent that they studied and duplicated the technology, installing their own Space Bridge network that allowed for easy transport between Cybertron, Earth and the planet Athenia, with fixed Space Bridge receptors in each base (the transport beam was, of course, now the traditional Autobot orange, as opposed to the Decepticons' iconic purple). Their failure to destroy the Decepticon Space Bridge, however, came back to bite them when the release of the Matrix's energy to cure the Hate Plague caused Vector Sigma to destabilise in 2011, allowing the Decepticons to use the Space Bridge to invade Cybertron.

When Mars was destroyed by Scorponok, the gravimetric balance of the solar system was disrupted, making Space Bridge travel to Earth unstable. This soon ceased to be an issue, however, when the Decepticons headed off on an interplanetary energy raid, and, in order to slow the Autobots down, Sixshot destroyed the Earth-based Space Bridge, causing a chain reaction that detonated the entire network.

(Note: The destruction of the Space Bridge left the only means to travel to Earth as the Trainbots and Battleship Maximus. After the Headmasters series, this reduced ability to travel to Earth is one of the reasons for the heavy human involvement in the following series, Masterforce, since Transformers are mostly unable to join the battle on Earth themselves.

Marvel Comics
(Note: Events from the UK-only comic stories are in italics.)

The space bridge was built by Lord Straxus' Cybertronic Decepticons, in response to the discovery that Megatron's lost group of Decepticons was alive and had set up operations on Earth. The bridge, which resembles a normal Earthen suspension bridge when not in use, has two halves; one which which remains stationary on Cybertron, and another which teleports to Earth. Passing through the bridge's central arch transports objects across vast distances, instantly and painlessly. Although a properly functioning space Bridge is a far more pleasant mode of transportation than the more fuel-efficient Autobot version, the Trans-Time Dimensional Portal, an improperly calibrated space bridge will annihilate any object or being who attempts to pass through its arch. Lord Straxus illustrated this fact when Blaster sent him over the edge during transit.

The original space bridge was built from the vast body of Spanner, a neutral scientist who had been captured by Straxus's forces and forced to design the Bridge. After the space bridge was almost completely destroyed, a new Bridge was built to replace it.

Robots in Disguise
In the Robots in Disguise cartoon, the Autobots used a complex network of hidden tunnels, bridges, and most notably, transwarp portals to travel to any location on Earth in a matter of minutes. This was called the Global Space Bridge in the English dub, and the Cybertron Network in Japan.

Dreamwave Generation 1 Comics
Unicron Trilogy
Space bridges are the main mode of traveling in the Unicron Trilogy. Unlike their Generation 1 counterparts, they do not appear to need use of a fixed device at both ends.

They appear to change in variation from series to series, although this is likely simply due to art direction. In Armada, the Transformers are 'stretched' into warp gates, while in Energon and Cybertron, space bridges tend to appear as large holes in the sky that may or may not have a clear ramp leading into it.
:Wrecker Hook is a Decepticon from the Robot Masters portion of Generation 1.

His own past is a mystery to Wrecker Hook. With no memory of his creation or who he really is, he stays with the Decepticons, thinking he might find answers one day. He is a skilled mechanic who can effect repairs on most anything, and does so without complaint. He seems to be friends with Wing Stun.

On the battlefield, however, Wrecker Hook is a danger to everyone around him, especially once he starts swinging his "Boost Hammer" weapon around. This might be a sign of his past self, or it could just be another result of some scrambled circuits.

(Note: There is speculation among fans that Wrecker Hook is the same character as the Robots in Disguise Tow-Line, who was called "Wrecker Hook" in Japan and used the same mold. However, what little fiction there is for Robot Masters barely acknowledges Wrecker Hook's existence, never mind getting into his real history.)

: As part of the first assortment of Robot Masters, Wrecker Hook is a heavily-painted redeco of the Machine Wars Hoist/Hubcap mold, transforming from a tow truck to robot with a spring-loaded one-step transformation. The grill of the truck detaches to form his "Aiming Shot" blaster weapon.

: The same mold is used by Robots in Disguise Tow-Line.

: Unique to this release of the mold is the solitarium weapon called the "Boost Hammer", a clear-plastic chain-and-mace melee weapon. It can be combined with the other Decepticons' solitarium weapons to form the "Arsenal Force" megaweapon.
