Summary
As Optimus lies defeated, Megatron stands gloating over his nemesis. To add insult to injury, Megatron has taken a new body...Primal's Optimal body, minus the beast mode. And, to make it just right, Megatron then adds the sparks of the Maximals to the spark containment chamber. Enraged, Optimus fights back, breaking out, where he sees the sparkless bodies of Cheetor, Silverbolt, and Blackarachnia. As Megatron attacks, Primal flees to a power generator storage area, where he destroys several, causing Megatron to lose an arm. As Primal to a nearby river, he dives, only to have Megatron shot a hole in the ground, causing them to sink into a whirlpool.

As Optimus wakes up, he realizes he is in the chamber of the Oracle. However, the technorganic orchard has been razed, and he sees Rattrap and Botanica lying on the ground. Megatron then arrives, and takes him to the surface. Heading toward the Council Citadel, Megatron activates a throne built into the Citadel to appear, then opens the spark chamber, absorbing the sparks and preparing to ascend to supplant the Matrix and achieve Godhood. Primal tries to talk, but Megatron then activates the Key to Vector Sigma, to be used against the organic core. However, Megatron cannot fully activate the Oracle, as he and Primal are linked. Megatron then severs the link, and Primal fears that he has failed. However, the sparks of his comrades speak to him, inspiring him on. Shooting two seeds near Megatron's arms, Primal then tries to knock him into the core. However, Megatron grabs hold of Optimus, who merely shoots off Megatron's fingers to sever the vine, allowing them both to fall into the core. At that point, both Optimus and Megatron die in the core. From space, a bright light rises, then begins to cover the surface of Cybertron.

Waking up, the Maximals find themselves in an organic world, which they realize is Cybertron. Rattrap is somewhat worried, then Botanica appears, and he jumps into her arms. As Silverbolt sweeps Blackarachnia off her feet, Waspinator appears as a tiny, technorganic wasp, pissed that he's been screwed over again. Then, the Oracle shows Cheetor a vision of Optimus Primal's spark, flying away, telling him to "transform, and transcend". As it fades, Cheetor mutters that he understands. In the distance, the freed Transformers, their sparks once again in bodies, run over the horizon, ready to assume control of the newly technorganic Cybertron.
Original Air Date: November 6, 1999

Summary
A gazelle-like beast watches Optimus Primal swing from tree to tree in a mysterious forest, following a trail of floating Sparks towards their nexus, the AllSpark. Suddenly, the AllSpark vanishes, and Primal is suddenly restrained by vines. As he watches, the placid forest vanishes, the trees and grass replaced by buildings and steel. Before him, the face of Megatron laughs trimphantly as the organic vines becomes technological.

Optimus awakens, shaken. The dream is revealed to be a Oracle-induced vision. Cheetor explains that he was worried about his leader, seeing as he was yelling and fearful. Primal rebukes him, saying that they should leave him alone no matter how worried they are. With Primal back in the Oracle, Cheetor takes over. Explaining to the Maximals that the Sparks of the Vehicon generals are subverted Maximal sparks, he tells them that they must extract the sparks somehow and reformat them into other technorganic Maximals to help them accomplish their goal (whatever that may be).

Cheetor suggests going after Tankor first, as he is slower then the others (in both speed and mentality). Blackarachnia suggests going after Thrust (for obvious reasons). However, she is the minority, and Tankor wins out. Cheetor splits them into two groups- Nightscream and Blackarachnia will distract Thrust and Jetstorm, Rattrap and Cheetor will (hopefully) extract the spark of Tankor and place it in a new body.

The three Generals are entrenched at a spaceport, supervising work. Tankor is coordinating the loading of a spacecraft, Jetstorm supervises the defense from the sky, and Thrust... is doing something important too. Probably.

Nightscream distracts the two latter Generals by destroying a building, prompting Jetstorm to give chase to the bat. Nightscream manages to escape and drains the energon from his body, weakening the plane. Blackarachnia tries to talk to Thrust about his past identity, and he begins to experience flashbacks of prehistoric Earth, seeing "Optimal" Optimus, Rhinox, Cheetor, and Blackarachnia (all in their final incarnations) looking at him.

At the docks, Rattrap distracts Tankor by throwing a bomb at him, irritating him enough to chase him. Cheetor transforms to robot mode and leaps from Drone to Drone, as Tankor fires at him. Rattrap interfaces with a crane and knocks Tankor away into some crates. Rattrap then attempts to interface with his mind.

Rattrap finally manages to access his past memories, and also breaks his amnesia.

Rattrap discovered that Megatron had broken free of the Shuttle in transwarp space, where he was sucked away. Rattrap remarked that "that was the last of him". Eventually, the team returned to Cybertron and was immediately shot down by orbiting satellites.

Rattrap takes a breather from watching these, and wonders why they all seem to be from his point of view. He then plugs back into Tankor's brain. He sees Cheetor (in his TM2 form) and Primal (in "Optimal" configuration) escaping from tank drones. But the drones fire some kind of "devolving gas", which reverts the escaping Maximals to their weakest configuration (and presumably gives them amnesia.)

Elsewhere, Rattrap and Silverbolt are hit by the same gas. While Rattrap (in a Transmetal form) merely devolves back into his original organic mode, Silverbolt seems to be in great pain (as he has no early mode to revert to). Rattrap wonders why he can see himself if these are supposedly his memories. But as the Drone closes in, he discovers that this is all from Rhinox's perspective- which means that Tankor is Rhinox!

As Thrust and Blackarachnia talk, Jetstorm (strengthened) arrives, buries Nightstorm under fallen rubble, and accuses Thrust of fraternizing with the "enemy". Thrust denies this, and Jetstorm puts pressure on him to remove Blackarachnia's Spark. Grudgingly, Thrust shoots her and uses the device to steal her Spark. Jetstorm prepares to take the Spark to Megatron.

Continuity Errors
* We never discover what the tank drones are loading onto the spacecraft, or why. Sure seems to be important, though.
* Although "Optimal" Optimus seems to be able to fight Megatron and win, he just runs away from the Drones and does nothing when they fire gas at him.
* Oddly enough, on that note, despite having beast/vehicle modes that can easily outrun/combat the Vehicon drones, the Maximals instead run away from them.

Summary
Optimus Primal, still exhausted after Nightscream's recent reformatting, awakens from a dream and is informed by Blackarachnia that Rattrap is on a recon mission with Cheetor and Nightscream.

At a manufacturing facility, Rattrap, Nightscream and Cheetor are being attacked by Aero Drones and Tank Drones. Since Rattrap still is unable to transform, Cheetor orders him go and download the data from the computers. As Megatron observes this, a Diagnostic Drone warns him that the DNA purging process is still in its experimental stage. But Megatron, eager to be rid of his hated beast mode, wishes to proceed before the Maximals can discover any more “mongral beasts”.

During the fight,Nightscream uses his sonic powers and discovers that if they attack the generals, the drones stop operating. Cheetor and Nightscream plan to ambush Tankor to test the theory.

Unfortunately, Rattrap observes the ensueing entrapment setup from his computer. He finally transforms successfully, and being eager to help, swings into action as Nightscream and Cheetor are attempting to disable Tankor and Jetstorm. His interference ends up spoiling the ambush, however, and causes the factory's machinery to start operating and building more Tank Drones at a faster and faster rate. Rattrap realises his robot form is unarmed so he is unable to help in the battle.

As the new tank drones run wild, Megatron takes the control. Rattrap attempts to stop the manufacture of the drones by linking himself into the main computer, only to be a sitting target for Megatron's aero drones. The resulting feedback travels along the power cables and causes a system failure, the total destruction of the manufacturing plant and a power cut for the whole sector.

On their way back to their base Cheetor and Nightscream harshly reprimand Rattrap for not following orders. Rattrap later complains to a sleeping Optimus Primal about his robot mode, when the others appear. Cheetor knocks Rattrap to the ground, ordering him to transform to beast mode; this jolt to Rattrap's system causes him to realise Megatron is weak as he replays vital stats he downloaded earlier. His suggestions of an attack on their weakened enemy are brushed off by Cheetor.

Rattrap overhears Blackarachnia, Cheetor and Nightscream discussing what to do with him and how he is such a burden with his useless robot mode. Infuriated, he leaves the base alone.

Megatron is being told the extent of the damage caused by the feedback earlier, when Rattrap saunters into his citadel, saying he wants “noisemakers”. After a bit of back and forth, Megatron and Rattrap work out a deal wherein Rattrap will defend Megatron for one night when he is at his weakest; if anything happens to Megatron, Rattrap forfeits his new weaponry.

Unexpectedly, Cheetor, Nightscream and Blackarachnia arrive to rescue Rattrap, forcing Rattrap to honour his word with Megatron -- he fires on his friends as they advance. While this is happening Megatron returns to full strength and begins rebooting his control of Cybertron. The Maximals and Rattrap are at an impasse when Optimus Primal arrives, still exhausted, and asks Rattrap to look inside himself and re-evaluate what he's doing. Primal tells him that Rattrap is stronger than any of them realize.

Megatron orders Rattrap to to attack Optimus Primal, but Rattrap reiterates the terms of the deal -- the sun is rising, the solar cycle is over, and Rattrap has kept his end of the bargain. Megatron, impressed with Rattrap's handling of the situation, upholds his word and lets the Maximals walk away. Megatron vows to his Diagnostic Drone that they shall liberate the Maximal’s sparks another day.
Trivia
* This episode was the source of much controversy, as Rattrap was depicted as being a 'traitor' to the Maximals, something many fans claimed was completely against the grain of what his character was all about.

* This episode also highlights a change in Megatron's own personality. Whereas before, he would have crushed a subordinate for mentioning the word 'honour', he demonstrates it when he keeps his word to Rattrap at the end of the episode.

:Depth Charge is a Maximal from the Beast Wars portion of the Generation 1/Beast Era continuity family. He is sometimes known as Depthcharge.

Depth Charge was once an Imperial Peace Marshal, whose territory was completely destroyed, and every robot under his protection slaughtered, by the malicious entity known as Protoform X. Since that fateful day, Depth Charge has lived for no other purpose than to enact justice (or vengeance) on X. His single-mindedness makes him a relentless hunter, stopping at nothing to prevent X from taking any more lives. His quest has more than taken its toll on Depth Charge, though m- whatever he was before, he is now a joyless, hollow shell of a being. While he sometimes expresses sympathy for other beings and lends aid to his fellow Maximals, Depth Charge has clearly been consumed by his mission, and the destruction of Protoform X is now more important to him than the original reasons behind his quest.

It's not revenge I'm looking for. It's justice.
Fiction
Animated continuity
Beast Wars
:Voice Actor David Sobolov (US), Kiyoyuki Yanada (Japan), Afonso Amajones (Brazil)

Depth Charge was a Peace Marshal stationed on Colony Omicron when Protoform X broke free and went on a rampage. As the colony's sole survivor, Depth Charge made hunting down "X" his only mission in life. Pursuing Protoform X to places throughout the Universe (including Starbase Rugby) Depth Charge successfully captured Protoform X, and turned him over to the Maximal Elders. The Elders decided that Protoform X should be placed in stasis aboard the Axalon and dumped on an uninhabited world.

Knowing that "Primal would screw it up", Depth Charge continued to monitor the Universe for any trace of Protoform X. The sensors on his Starhopper picked up traces of Protoform X just as he was pulled through a temporal anomaly. The resulting crash left him on prehistoric Earth with a Transmetal Manta Ray body, and put him right in the middle of the Beast Wars.

Depth Charge became a wild card for the Maximals. Although against the Predacons, and shocked by the presence of the Ark, Depth Charge initially refused to follow Primal's orders. They never knew if he could be counted on, as his pursuit of Protoform X, now known as Rampage always took precedent. His new body gave him the Cybershark (not the fellow Maximal) drone, which he used to track Rampage and later, inadvertently, Dinobot 2. His single-minded obsession usually ended up getting the Maximals in trouble. Once he outright refused to help the other Maximals in a mission to recover their Sentinel defense software, which resulted in its ultimate loss.

However, Depth Charge would comply with the Maximals from time to time. When Depth Charge was called forth to stop Megatron from launching the Nemesis he followed the order, for even he knew how important it was to stop Megatron. Ironically it was Rampage who found Depth Charge on this mission and forced him into battle. They fought, their battle intensified by nearby Energon crystals throughout the terrain.

As Depth Charge attempted to shove an Energon spike into Rampage's spark, Rampage released Depth Charge's hands and laughed maniacally as he allowed his rival to destroy the both of them. His reasons for this are unknown. Some fans believe Rampage was using Depth Charge's own obsession with him to manipulate and corrupt him, with this scenario the ultimate test to see just how far the Maximal would go to claim "justice" over him. It may also be that Rampage simply decided he wished to be free of Megatron's control.

This incident was also the only time in the Beast Wars when a Maximal killed a Predacon.

IDW Beast Wars comics
Depth Charge was observed emerging from the water by Magmatron and Drill Bit. Due to their chronal displacement, they could see him, but he could not see them.

Universe
When Optimus Primal was brought before Alpha Trion and Primus and told to select any Cybertronians past or present to form the foundations of a new army that would take the fight for the multiverse to Unicron himself, Depth Charge was chosen by Primal, along with Rhinox. Depth Charge was less than thrilled about being brought back to life, but that didn't stop him from saving Rattrap from a newly-corrupted Blackarachnia.
: Depth Charge transforms into a robotic manta ray, plus has a third "air skimmer" mode. The very end of his tail detaches to form a sword/javelin. In all modes, his robot chest/manta mouth is a spring-loaded, gravity-fed disc launcher. He comes with a "cybershark" drone-unit that has two spring-loaded missile launchers in its mouth. This drone can attach to Depth Charge's manta/skimmer modes, or be used as a hand-held weapon in robot mode.

: For the Takara Beast Wars Metals line, the "DEPTH CHARGE" tampograph changed to "CYBERTRON" and the faction sigil, as with all toys in the series.

: Depthcharge was redecoed for the Universe line, into a series of dark drab greens, maroons, and black, with paint-wash effects on his wings. The end result is actually kinda Star Wars-ian. The toy had several small changes made for safety reasons. On the main toy, the front small... manta-ray-mouth thingies were cast in a much more pliable plastic. The tail of his cybershark drone was also changed to pop off as a separate piece; this also allows it to spin, plus makes it easier for Depthcharge to hold it in robot mode. The discs were given a much thicker, rounder border as well.

Trivia
*In the jovial Japanese dub of Beast Wars, nearly all the characters were given bizarre quirks with the intention of inserting extra "comedy" elements. Depth Charge had a habit of singing "Ito Maki-maki", a Japanese folk song, while transforming. The words translate to "Wind the thread" (it's a fishing song, get it?).

*Depth Charge's severed head can be seen in the junkyard in the Spark of Darkness episode of Beast Machines, precisely 5 minutes and 3 seconds into the episode.

Summary
The Maximals celebrate the defeat of Megatron inside the now-dormant Grand Mal. But while most of the group high-five each other, Nightscream mourns the loss of his pet Savage/Noble. Silverbolt wonders if Megatron is truly defeated, but Primal assures his team that he knows Megatron is dead, thanks to their mutual connection to the Oracle. When Cheetor mentions there's still business to be taken care of, Botanica responds she feels there's another evil on Cybertron.

Cheetor and Nightscream are sent to find the Vehicon generals. Silverbolt and Blackarachnia are sent assess the dormant Transformer bodies to start the process of returning the sparks Megatron kidnapped to function. Rattrap and Botanica are assign to attend the techno-organic orchard. Rattrap, of course, whines about this. Optimus stays in the Grand Mal.

Blackarachnia tries to put the moves on Silverbolt, but without confirmation that Megatron is truly really dead, he's extremely hesitant to respond to her advances. She's so focused on trying to force open Silverbolt's heart, only he notices the large, lumbering monster emerge behind her. The two Maximals run away (cowardly) from the giant, but when the monster hits Silverbolt with gunfire, Blackarachnia fights back with her electric sting. The monster knocks her over, but Silverbolt has had time to recover and attacks the monster with his throwing blades. Eventually, Blackarachnia has the idea to attack the monster using an explosive component from one of the nearby Transformer bodies. The behemoth steps out of the explosion, and the two Transformers watch a strange red spark emerge from the monster as it falls over in defeat. The red glow races away.

In the orchard, while Botanica works, Rattrap scavenges parts of a Motorcycle Drone to see if anything can be made into a useful tool. As he does this, he moans that he feels his talents are being wasted and he'll be stuck with embarrassing stories to tell his grandkids. Botanica argues that tending the garden is important. The debate between the two heats up, and in their rage, the two Maximals accidentally touch lips. The two quickly agree to completely disregard, forget, and ignore their contact and get to work. But suddenly, the deactivated Cycle Drone comes to life and begins to blast the orchard. Botanica, upset about the carnage, transforms and uses her bolts to bring heavy wreckage crashing down upon the possessed drone. The drone flails its body one last time before falling over, no longer inhabited by the glowing red spark.

Cheetor and Nightscream meet with Strika and Obsidian and invite the two generals to join the Maximals. As the two generals debate, Thrust stops by to make it clear that he has no interest in joining with the Maximals and that he believes that Megatron, "The Big M," will soon return. After Thrust leaves, the remaining four are attacked by a damaged but resilient Aero Drone. Nightscream sucks the energy from the drone, but the monster still tries to pull Cheetor over the edge of a nearby cliff. Cheetor is saved by Nightscream and the drone falls, but before it makes impact with the water below, the glowing red spark leaves the body.

The group returns to meet with the other Maximals (sans Botanica) inside the Grand Mal, and Optimus welcomes Strika and Obsidian to the team. The two new recruits leave to fortify the base - just in time for Rattrap to detect the haunting red spark heading right towards them all. Inside, the spark passes by the two generals and briefly encounters Cheetor and Blackarachnia. Next, the spark uses a Tank Drone body to attack Optimus and Botanica. While Rattrap tracks the movement of the Spark, he deduces a way to neutralize its rampage.

Rattrap uses a Spark Extractor on the Tank Drone to draw out the spark. Once the red spark is contained, he "re-polarizes" his captive, but the Spark Extractor flies alive, trying to break free of Rattrap's grip. After escaping the spark extractor, the spark flies into a Diagnostic Drone and, finally coherent, exclaims "I live!" But Rattrap has the next laugh: The spark, who is clearly Megatron, is now trapped inside of the diminutive body.

The Maximals meet Megatron, but he laughs at them. Even in his tiny form, he's able to reactivate the Grand Mal's internal defenses to evict the Maximals. As the Maximals struggle against the tentacles that have begun to bind them, Primal has an Oracle moment, but the Maximals are all captured anyway. Megatron starts to reformat Primal's spark, but Rattrap gets Botanica to destroy the control panel, freeing the team from Megatron's grip.

Obsidian arrives at the fight scene and is forced to choose: Be loyal to Primal's or Megatron's side. The two generals grab Megatron and fall out of sight. Out of immediate danger, Optimus explains that Nightscream didn't kill Megatron, but only turned Megatron into the monster that he was but no longer is.

Away from the battle, Strika, Obsidian and Megatron meet up with Thrust. No longer in control of the Sparks, Megatron declares, "The time for action is now."
