A wounded Spike is turned into an Autobot Frankenstein's monster to save his life.

Detailed synopsis
After a battle with the Autobots, Megatron plans his escape by creating a diversion for the Autobots: He blasts Bumblebee while Spike Witwicky is riding in him. The attack leaves Bumblebee damaged and Spike comatose. Spike is taken to Metro Hospital, where the doctors suggest that if Spike's mind could be transferred somewhere else, they would be able to operate on his fragile body. Wheeljack and Sparkplug Witwicky transfer Spike's mind into a creation of Sparkplug's called Autobot X, in effect turning the boy into Autobot Spike. However, as a side effect of the transferral process, Spike's mind is left in an extremely unstable state. Angry about his new body, Autobot Spike rampages, destroying several computers and machines in Wheeljack's shop.
Optimus Prime is able to subdue Autobot Spike without damaging his mind. To keep Spike calm, Wheeljack tunes Teletraan I to a television station, where cruel Fate just happens to have scheduled an airing of the movie Frankenstein. Spike is roused to anger, convinced he is a "monster", and begins to rampage again throughout the Autobot Headquarters before he escapes.

Going out into the wilderness alone, Spike suffers from the conflict between his own mind and what there is of Autobot X's. Will he use his new body and powers to help the world like Optimus Prime, or conquer all Humanity?

Laserbeak informs Megatron of Spike's new Autobot body and unstable mind, and Megatron forms a plan to trick Autobot Spike into destroying the Autobots. Megatron soon finds Spike with Reflector's help. Autobot Spike attacks, but Megatron has other plans. Spike's unstable mind makes it hard for him to think, and he is easily twisted by Megatron to go against the Autobots.

Bumblebee brings the Autobots to Spike's location, but they are unable to fight against the vengeful being for fear of destroying Spike's mind. Only after Autobot Spike shoots his father off the edge of a cliff does he realize what he has done. At once, he saves his father and turns on the Decepticons.

Finally, Spike's mind is returned to his human body after the surgical operation on it is successfully completed.

Spike will never be placed in a robot's body again. Never?.

Ironhide is the Autobot's resident weapons specialist and Optimus Prime's old friend. He is old because he is hard. He's probably had enough replacement parts to build a small army, but Ironhide doggedly refuses to roll over and die for anyone. He'll fight to the bitter end and take down more than his fair share of Decepticons in the process.

Ironhide doesn't always see optic to optic with Prime, despite their friendship. He's perhaps the more practical of the two, and more than a little trigger happy, so he can be more willing to push to Autobot code to the limit if he thinks it will get the job done faster.
Fiction
Titan Magazines
During the war, Ironhide ran training missions for the younger Autobot recruits. These missions would often have the recruits thrown into the sharp end: one, involving Signal Flare, Strongarm and Skyblast, abruptly turned into a raid on a Decepticon base and rescuing a prisoner. He also developed skills at resisting psychic interrogation techniques. Transformers Comic issue 5

He would later be one of three Autobots who tried to prevent Megatron from reaching the All Spark. They hadn't, however, expected for Devastator to be demented enough to set off a foldspace warhead at pointblank range - a weapon that warped everyone to different parts of the galaxy. Transformers Comic issue 2

After spending some time planet-hopping, Ironhide detected Ratchet's homing signal and headed for it. En route, he was captured by an alien spacecraft, one that appeared to belong to immense entities that created the Allspark and wanted it back. Ironhide, shrugging off a psychic probe, worked out these entities were an illusion - the ship was a derelict that had been salvaged by a group of aquatic aliens who wanted to find & exploit the Allspark. Ironhide removed their ability to do so by taking the derelict's device that tracked down Allspark energy. While he then went on his way, he was left wondering what race had originally owned this vessel and what their connection to the Allspark was... Transformers Comic issue 5

Responding to Bumblebee's call for assistance, Ironhide and the other Autobots under Optimus Prime's direct command came to Earth, with the old soldier landing in a suburban pool. As he climbed out of the water, a little human girl asked him if he was (of all things) the tooth fairy before he quickly hid behind some trees when the child's parents exited the house. He scanned their GMC Topkick truck and transformed, leaving the residence. He linked up with Jazz and Ratchet, and they proceeded to the rendezvous point, where they met up with Optimus and Bumblebee. After meeting Sam Witwicky and Mikaela Banes, Ironhide displayed an eagerness to show off his cannons, and made a classic Clint Eastwood impression to show it by saying 'You feeling lucky, punk?'.

Going to the Witwicky residence, Ironhide had lubricant released upon him by a rodent. This unpleasant situation was made worse by Sam Witwicky's frantic refusal to let him shoot it. Ironhide relented, despite the fact that it would cause rust. He also suggested shooting the parents, as they were interfering with Sam's search for Captain Witwicky's glasses. Optimus reminded him that they don't hurt humans and scolded his weapons expert, to which Ironhide meekly responded that he merely thought it should remain an option.

After Sam, Mikaela and his parents were captured by Sector Seven, Ironhide and the other Autobots totally outclassed the S7 agents by instantly disarming them of their weapons, then rescuing the boy and his girl. Unfortunately, their escape was to be short-lived, as Bumblebee was captured by the mysterious agents after saving Sam and Mikaela's lives. The next morning, when Optimus Prime was pondering their next move, Ironhide asked why they had to save the humans, prompting Prime to go into one of his long speeches about freedom and sacrifice, concluding that the humans need not pay for the mistakes of Cybertron-kind, and if need be, he would destroy the All Spark by fusing it with his own spark. Inspired by his words, Ironhide debated no further, and the Autobots set out for the location of the All Spark, Hoover Dam. Halfway there, to their surprise, they saw Bumblebee leading a column of Sector Seven assault vehicles, so Ironhide and the rest of the Autobots joined the unit.

During the final battle at Mission City, Ironhide realized that the F-22 Raptor that appeared to be providing Captain Lennox's troops with air cover was in fact Starscream. Ordering the others to take cover, Ironhide and Bumblebee lifted a discarded truck full of Furby toys to protect the humans against Starscream's strafing run. It worked, but threw Ironhide back and accidently crippled Bumblebee. Soon afterwards, Devastator attacked, forcing Ironhide to do several somersaults to avoid the Decepticon's missiles, thus totally scaring the fuck out of a lady sitting in the middle of the street.

Ironhide and Ratchet took it upon themselves to protect Sam from Starscream and Blackout as he made his way to a rooftop where he could pass the All Spark to a military helicopter. Unfortunately, Starscream blocked off Sam's path, prompting the Autobot guardians to engage the more powerful Decepticon immediately. After being knocked down, Ironhide implored Sam to keep running.

After the destruction of Megatron and the All Spark, Ironhide somberly cradled the body of the fallen Jazz while Ratchet informed Optimus Prime that there was nothing they could do. Ironhide then gave Captain Lennox a ride home and spent the remainder of the day observing Sam and Mikaela making out on the hood of Bumblebee's vehicle mode.

Brief aside with Optimus Prime reveals Ironhide's actions may have resulted in the destruction of a small planet at one point. Ironhide maintains that it was going to blow up anyway. Strangely, Ironhide uses only his right cannon. But when fighting Ironhide, he uses both. Ironhide is such a gun nut that he even uses it in his melee attacks.

:Ironhide transforms into a modified black 2006 GMC Topkick 4500 four-wheel drive pickup truck. The two exhaust smokestacks behind the rear cabin have been shortened from the real scaled length and the prototype due to safety and durability reasons, but otherwise the vehicle mode is very accurate to the real prop truck... well, aside from the fact that Ironhide's massive missile launchers are quite visible underneath the vehicle.

:Ironhide features an Automorph gimmick in his legs during transformation: As the user swings down his feet, all of the panels that make up his legs automatically shift and fold into place. This gimmick does not affect Ironhide's articulation. Confusingly, the instructions omit the exact positioning of the roof panels and rear window on his back.

:In robot mode, Ironhide is quite accurate to his CGI design, though obviously simplified for toy practicality. Contrary to appearances, he features full standard up-down and lateral shoulder articulation, as well as articulation in his elbows, hips and knees. His arm-mounted cannons are inactive while mounted on both arms. However, detaching the left arm cannon and combining it with the right arm creates a huge functional missile launcher that is almost as big as Ironhide himself. The missile-launching mechanism itself isn't the typical spring-loaded button design, instead relying on a pressure-launch system to fire the missiles from the four barrels.
As reported at Edmunds and The Monroe Times, Monroe Truck Equipment, in association with Hasbro, released a GMC TopKick 4500 Ironhide special edition featuring most of the modifications made to the Ironhide vehicle props used in the movie, with the only difference being that the truck will retain its stock orange running lights (the movie used blue) and the large stock sideview mirrors.

Sadly, installing a grumpy trigger-happy alien robot and deadly high-tech weaponry into the works is not part of the included modifications.
Trivia
* In the initial draft of the movie, Ironhide was not present among the Autobot cast. However, he replaced female Autobot Arcee in later drafts and the subsequent final script.

* In the movie, Ironhide's guns have 10,000 CGI parts each.
Marvel Comics continuity
Generation 1
(Note: Events from the UK-only comic stories are in italics.)

Blaster was a rather grim, brooding, rebellious loner and one of the best, kickass fighters the Autobots had. He had a bit of a problem with authority and hated Decepticons with a passion due to the death of his former partner Scrounge. Originally part of Perceptor's Autobot resistance cell on Cybertron, he often disagreed with his superior's orders.

Shortly after Scrounge was killed, Blaster took part in an assault on Darkmount, where he engaged and seemingly destroyed the Decepticon commander Straxus, before using the Space Bridge to flee to Earth. The Bridge to Nowhere!

Upon arriving on Earth, Blaster was among the Autobots deactivated and disassembled by Circuit Breaker and RAAT. Heavy Traffic

He was later released and joined the other earthbound Autobots at the Ark, shortly before Optimus Prime's death. Blaster was one of the Autobots who voted for Grimlock to be leader of the Autobots, however he soon came to regret this decision. King of the Hill!

Blaster developed a reluctant friendship with Goldbug whose more naturally upbeat personality provided the Boy-Wonder to his Batman. After an encounter with The Mechanic, Blaster and Goldbug went AWOL from Grimlock's command, having grown tired of his aggressive orders and increasing mental instabilities. Mechanical Difficulties!

For this disobedience (and their failure to capture The Mechanic), Grimlock branded Blaster and Goldbug traitors, and sent the Protectobots to hunt them down. They eventually captured Blaster, but after he saved their lives from the Combaticons, they realized Grimlock's orders were purely vengeful and let him go. Used Autobots Child's Play (comic issue)

Blaster finally returned to the Ark, where his fellow Autobots begged him to take over as leader. However, he was forced to surrender to his former commander when Grimlock threatened the safety of several earth children. Spacehikers!

Imprisoned by Grimlock, Blaster was strapped to a Variable Voltage Harness as punishment for his desertion and disobedience. However, when Fortress Maximus and his Autobots arrived and Grimlock challenged him to a duel, Blaster took his place. Their duel was interrupted by a Decepticon attack. When Blaster pointed out that their feud had put all Autobots in danger, Grimlock agreed to call their duel a draw and declared a truce with Blaster as they fended off the Decepticons side-by-side. Totalled!

While Blaster, with Buster Witwicky's girlfriend Jessie, failed to rescue the young boy from the Decepticon's island resort/base they proved instrumental in discovering the upcoming arrival of the legendary Transformers database, the Underbase. Club Con! Like many other Transformers, Blaster was killed fighting the Underbase powered Starscream, shot dead atop the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. Dark Star

Blaster was later among the first Autobots resurrected by Grimlock with Nucleon. He took part in and survived the battle with Unicron. On the Edge of Extinction!

Blaster was one of the few Autobots present to survive the initial Decepticon ambush on Klo. End of the Road! (Marvel US comic)

In the future of 2008, Blaster was present at Autobot City when the Quintessons attacked. He was deactivated in the battle that followed and his body strung up from the battlements. Space Pirates

Animated continuity
:Voice Actor: Buster Jones (US), Keiichi Nanba (Japan)

Blaster was a fun-loving, hip and happening robot. Loud and energetic, and happy to share his choice of rockin' tunes with anyone, whether they really wanted to hear them or not.

Blaster appeared out of nowhere one day during Wheeljack's demonstration of the modifications he made to the Dinobots to improve their sense of balance and coordination, and to that end Blaster was requested to play something 'nice'. For some reason, Blaster had trouble tuning into a station until Grimlock (obviously tired of this scene's padding) blasted fire at Blaster's controls, allowing the Autobot boombox to tune into the local Rock and Big Band Music Fusion station. Ironhide, Trailbreaker and Sidewipe showed their appreciation for the fine selection of elevator music by jerkily dancing around and claiming their audio sensors were being fried. Blaster continued to enthrall Grimlock until Slag and Sludge bumped into their leader and totally freaked him out. Dinobot Island, Part 1

His loud music often got him into trouble, especially when he jammed emergency frequencies with bad 80's hair metal. Blaster and Cosmos eventually converted a deserted Decepticon headquarters on Earth's moon into an Autobot base, they were never shown to use it (it's possible the base they built was later used by Marissa Faireborn of the EDC).

Blaster had a rivalry with Decepticon tapedeck, Soundwave. The two clashed frequently, though they were most often shown to be evenly matched. In 2005, when the Decepticons ransacked Autobot City, Soundwave attempted to jam Blaster's distress signal to Optimus Prime with his Cassette forces. Blaster countered with his own Cassette army, and the itty bitty guys 'rassled.

In 2006, Blaster was stationed most frequently at Autobot City on Earth. However, at one point in Transformer history best left forgotten, he traveled with the Autobots to another planet where he translated opera into English.

Scramble City OVA
Blaster was finally gifted with some Cassette forces of his own to counter Soundwave's. Steeljaw and Ramhorn took on Ratbat but couldn't protect the secrets of Metroplex.

Teletraan Go! Go! comics
As Teletraan 15 lay recuperating from her Galvatron-inflicted injuries, a voice came from a nearby boombox, remarking that the song in her heart sounded lonely.

Transforming into his towering robot mode, Blaster told 15 that a princess like her deserved a more cheerful song. After listening to her problems, he advised her not to worry about what she ought to do and suggested that she concentrate on doing what she loved best. He told her that as individuals, sentient beings are notes, and that together, they become music.

He handed her a small cassette tape and told her that whenever she was depressed, she should listen to music. She thanked him as he left.

Despite Blaster's good intentions, the tape turned out to be full of depressing music. It also turned out to be Steeljaw.Teletraan Go! Go!

Kiss Players
Blaster hand-picked Rosanna to join his cassette team, feeling that she was the only Autobot who properly understood his love of music.

He was later appointed by Ultra Magnus as the Producer of the Kiss Players singing group, of which Rosanna became a founding member.Kiss Players (fiction)

Headmasters cartoon
Blaster's rivalry with Soundwave increased dramatically by the year 2011. At one point, when Hot Rod was searching Earth for the Matrix, he was ambushed by Soundwave. Blaster took Soundwave on alone, urging Hot Rod to leave without him. Soundwave and Blaster then prepared for their final duel. The result was a tie, sorta. They both died.

Later, all the Autobots were content to leave Blaster as a corpse until Daniel and Blaster's cassette forces whined enough to have their pal resurrected. Rodimus then brought Blaster back online as the yellow and blue repaint, Twincast. Coincidentilly, the Decepticons reanimated Soundwave as the black-as-coal Soundblaster. The two arch enemies then renewed their struggle.

After his revival, he also serves as the Autobots karaoke machine.

Japanese Generation 2 story pages
After Optimus Prime and Megatron forged the Cybertron Alliance, Twincast returned to his original form as Blaster for reasons unknown.

(The artwork by Hidetsugu Yoshioka for the single story page Blaster appeared in features all the characters in their Action Master bodies, implying Blaster may have become an Action Master as well.)

Dreamwave comics
Blaster and his partner Perceptor were co-leaders of an Autobot faction millions of years ago on Cybertron. While this faction may or may not have existed in the Dark Ages before Ultra Magnus unified the Autobots under his command, they were the only known resistance to Megatron's tyrannical rule during the Age of Internment that followed.

In modern times, Blaster allied himself with Hot Rod and Kup's underground resistance, opposing the new tyrannical rule of Shockwave.

Blaster seems to have a 'thing' against tyrannical rules.

At one point, he remarked that he couldn't wait to go to Earth. Ironically, Dreamwave's bankruptcy meant he never got to go. Poor Blaster.
Pressing the "eject" button pops open his tape door, which can store a single microcassette Transformer.

: Some releases of Blaster still retain the battery-cover back from the Microchange release (see Trivia).

: Blaster was re-released in 2006 as part of the "Transformers Collection" "bookbox" series, packaged with Steeljaw.

: The first Blaster toy was redecoed, and had its tape-door retooled in order to accommodate two cassettes at once. The clear-plastic part of the door was also changed to clear-red, so when certain cassettes were placed inside, the "secret plans" decals on them would reveal the "weak point" of either Fortress Maximus or Scorponok, much like using the tech-specs decoders. He came with Steeljaw, who was given one of these new decals.

: In 2006, Twincast was reissued as an e-Hobby exclusive, this time packaged with the new character Flip Sides.
He has working doors, hood, and trunk, plus his engine becomes a non-firing weapon. He also comes with an extra decal sheet, which includes signs for "TBN" which possibly stands for "Transformers Broadcast Network" or somesuch; there is Japanese text on the labels as well, but it's really tiny and hard to make out.

Trivia
* The pre-Transformers version of Blaster was actually a functioning AM radio. The Microchange release of the toy came with a microcassette-sized radio that plugged in to Radi-Casse Robo, which had internal wiring that allowed the radio to play through the speakers in its' legs. The big hole in his Electro-Scrambler rifle is an earphone storage space, and the cord can be wrapped around the gun and then the plug connects to the hole in the gun's stock. Despite popular belief, the compartment in the back of some Blaster toys was not a reminat of a battery compartment, but was actually storage for one of the transforming micro cassette since a plug kept them from fitting in the cassette door. The battery compartment was actually in one of his legs.

* According to Grimlock on a Letters Page, Blaster's visor is retractable. He uses it to shield his especially delicate optical sensors from sunlight.

* The packaging for Twincast's e-Hobby reissue was the same generic Decepticon-scheme box used to package Magnificus. However, since Flip Sides is technically a Decepticon, it...sorta works.

* According to Blaster himself on the UK letters page he has two siblings: Toaster and Karmen.

* According to the G1 Production Bible, Blaster's preliminary name was Blastbox.
