Idea and Design Works, LLC currently owns the Transformers comic book license as of May 2005, following the financial collapse of the previous license holder, Dreamwave Productions, at the tail-end of 2004.

IDW's flagship storyline is a rebooted Generation 1 continuity, which started out being written by longtime Transformers scribe Simon Furman and told through a succession of mini-series and one-shot Spotlights, before finally producing a monthly comic in 2009. IDW has also been authorized to re-release trade paperbacks published by Dreamwave Productions, such as the War and Peace mini-series and The War Within and War Within: The Dark Ages. In May 2008, IDW's relationship with Hasbro proved to be quite healthy indeed as they snapped up the G.I. Joe comic book license as well.

IDW mocks your nerdy belief that writers and editors should be able to remember things that happened in previous issues.

Series published
G1 rebooted
Initial ideas for IDW's Transformer line included a Crisis on Infinite Earths-style story crossing over with the new Cybertron toyline, starting ongoings in both G1 and Cybertron continuity. The G1 cast would suffer Cybertron's destruction and learn Unicron's death had destabilized the entire omniverse, forcing them to try and assemble an artifact called the "Decepticon Matrix" in order to resurrect Unicron. This would parallel with the Cybertron plot, in which the Autobots seek out the Cyber Planet Keys to revive Primus, and Vector Prime would have appeared as a guide in both series. It seems that series would then have come together with the concurrent Cybertron comic as Transformers from across the multiverse were brought together for a final, epic clash.

This was considered too confusing for new readers, however, and dropped for a continuity reboot of Generation 1. Furman mostly oversaw this, creating a more sophisticated universe around the familiar characters and tropes: Marvel Comics' Ultimate line was the inspiration, and Furman deliberately borrowed the more leisurely pacing of Ultimate Marvel.

Instead of an ongoing civil war on Cybertron which spills over to Earth by accident, Furman presented us with an interstellar war between the Autobots and Decepticons, a war of Code of Interplanetary Conflict and alt-form-and-dagger covert operations, with energon the prize and whole planets at stake. A surprising development on Earth heats up the war and turns our planet from just another proxy battleground into the ultimate prize.

This slow, measured storyline was eventually abandoned in an attempt to bring in more casual fans with a more G1 Cartoon-inspired revamp in All Hail Megatron. This failed to have the desired effect both in terms of sales and fan-response, so another revamp was attempted with the start of The Transformers ongoing series. It has met with sharp fan criticism as well. (sigh)

The general order of publications to date is as follows:

* The Transformers: Infiltration (2005–2006) Establishes the presence of the Transformers on modern-day Earth and re-establishes the theme of "robots in disguise" as central to the new continuity; a seven-issue story arc (issues #0 to #6).
* The Transformers: Spotlight (2006–present) Series of one-shot stories focusing on a single Transformer per issue; this series has no fixed publication format and is ongoing. It went on hiatus after "Spotlight: Metroplex" while the new ongoing series was getting established, but has since returned, although at a greatly reduced pace.
* The Transformers: Stormbringer (2006) A four-issue miniseries tie-in to Infiltration, establishing Cybertron's current situation in the re-boot and focusing squarely on the Transformers.
* The Transformers: Escalation (2006–2007) Sequel to Infiltration; a six-issue story arc detailing a conflict with the Decepticons in Brasnya and the abduction of Sunstreaker and Hunter O'Nion.
* New Avengers/Transformers (2007) A collaboration between Marvel Comics and IDW featuring the first ever crossover between the Transformers and New Avengers. Though it has minimal effects on the overall universe, it was specifically designed to fit into continuity between Infiltration and Escalation.
* The Transformers: Megatron Origin (2007) A four-issue story arc detailing the events surrounding Megatron's rise to power and the founding of the Decepticon faction.
* The Transformers: Devastation (2007–2008) Sequel to Escalation; a six-issue story arc following up on what happened to Sunstreaker, as well as the Decepticons' battle with the Reapers and seeds are planted for the upcoming Dead Universe arc.
* Revelation (2008) Sequel to Devastation; composed of 4 Spotlights; Cyclonus, Hardhead, Doubledealer and Sideswipe. This series wraps up the events of the Dead Universe.

* The Transformers: All Hail Megatron (2008–2009) A twelve-issue maxi-series, extended to sixteen to include the All Hail Megatron Coda series. It chronicles the aftermath of the defeat of the Autobots and the Decepticon conquest of Earth. The publication schedule overlaps with Revelation and Maximum Dinobots. Issues 13–16 each consist of two 11-page stories that help strengthen the flaws in All Hail Megatron and tie into the ongoing series.
* The Transformers: Maximum Dinobots (2008–2009) A five-issue which takes place chronologically between Revelation and All Hail Megatron (which it was published concurrently with). The series wraps up Furman's story arcs with the Dynobots, Sunstreaker, the Headmasters, Shockwave, Skywatch and the Machination.
* The Transformers (2009–2011) An ongoing series which began in November 2009 . The series is penned by Mike Costa with art on the first arc by Don Figueroa. Different artists have contributed as well.
It began in December 2009, written by Zander Cannon with art by Chee Yang Ong (the team that worked on the second story of All Hail Megatron #16).
Intended to be a series of Elseworlds-like stories that exist in their own separate continuities, each taking different takes on Transformers. Only one has so-far been produced. ==Editorial policies==

IDW has a somewhat unconventional editorial policy, at least as far as their Transformers titles are concerned: Whereas other companies such as Marvel or DC often tend to dictate writers their stories, IDW takes the opposite approach and gives its writers pretty much free rein, regardless of whether it contradicts previous stories or even makes little sense by itself. What's worse, whereas Dreamwave had enforced a rigid "house style", IDW actively encourages artists to use their own style... which appears to extend to Transformers characters' designs and even alternate modes.
*Regarding All Hail Megatron, Simon Furman, who had been the head writer of the IDW Generation 1 continuity up to that point, confirmed that that there had been no collaboration or communication between himself and All Hail Megatron writer Shane McCarthy, and it was up to then IDW editor Denton J. Tipton to sort out the continuity. The results were questionable, and All Hail Megatron later required a four-issue "Coda" intended to sort out apparent inconsistencies and answer open questions.
*As of All Hail Megatron, recurring characters in the Generation 1 stories started getting redesigned. Depending on which artist was on a comic, several characters repeatedly alternated between Cybertronian alternate modes, E. J. Su's modernized robot mode designs, entirely new designs, and almost slavish rehashes of the Generation 1 animation models. At the IDW forums, artist Guido Guidi stated that, regarding his work on the ongoing series that followed All Hail Megatron, he had been specifically asked to ignore the designs Don Figueroa had used in previous issues and "do [his] own thing", which resulted in him having to re-draw almost half of issue 9 from scratch.
*Artist Alex Milne deliberately drew two background generics that were killed as cannon fodder in Drift issue 2 to resemble established characters from other franchises. He specifically elaborated on this, stating that he had included them at the suggestion of a friend because they were two of the favorite characters of David Willis, an outspoken critic of Milne's art. In response to this, then editor Denton J. Tipton stated that Milne had no control over which characters live or die, and that these were just generics and this was only an issue because of the "fascination with 'canon.'"
How about an actual article?
This thing is basically a list of info. Why isn't this a bit more organized, like on Wikipedia? And is the stuff about the Writers' Strike really neccesary? I'd edit it, but I do not appear to have that privilege. Jim Java 16:56, 8 May 2009 (EDT)
:Yes it's a list of info, because right now all we have is info. It's better than Wikipedia's page because it focuses on confirmed news only and not rumors, stolen toys and third-hand reports. Yes, the stuff about the Writer's Strike is necessary, since it did affect production of Revenge Of The Fallen. No, you can't edit it, because the page is protected on account of so many anonymous users and new users making additions based on rumors, stolen toys and third-hand reports. --Detour 17:28, 8 May 2009 (EDT)

:In about a month and a half, this article will get a total top-to-bottom re-write, when... y'know... we see the movie. Till then, there's not a lot of point in dramatic changes; they'd just be swept away under the deluge of information that we'll have when the film is released.
:That said, I feel your pain. "Writer such-and-such has envisioned a storyline involving the Constructicons" seems like a ridiculous bit of information to have right upfront at this point in the game, when we've seen them in the trailer. ETA: If you'd seriously like to have a go at cleaning it up, you could always set up a temp page somewhere. -- Repowers 17:33, 8 May 2009 (EDT)

::At the same time, I don't really see the point of doing a page like the Wikipedia. We'll never be able to compete with them in terms of sheer information on things like production, and were are restricted by our rule of only using information that has been released by Hasbro/Takara, Dreamworks, Paramount and their partners (and they generally don't release much in the way of information). Besides, as I've understood this wiki, our focus is on the content of the fiction itself and the characters starring in it, which is what differentiates us from the Wikipedia. :I don't think that would make the article better at all. The article as-is is a list of things. Making that list into a big block of text is not going to help anything. We don't need to pretend that this article isn't a list. --ItsWalky 21:18, 11 May 2009 (EDT)

Regarding the grafting of the Steven_F._Udvar-Hazy_Center to the Boneyard: it should be noted that the UHC is in Chantilly, VA, rather outside of Washington, DC proper. There is actually more space next to the hangar, where Jetfire would have exited if they didn't have the compositing transition to the Boneyard. However, while the area's grassy and flat, it's surrounded by small chunks of forest (see , it looks right out over the hangar entrance he would have exited from), and is further connected to Dulles Airport in the distance. :) I can only assume they went with the visual assumption that "hey, it's a museum, they'd have lots of mothballed planes around, and what's there right now is boring", but that's purely speculation on my part. Some anonymous idiot took it upon himself to number the characters in a pretty horrible, incorrect fashion, and while people have since repositioned the names, the order of appearance is still wrong. And we're missing a character from the list. I would think people here who actually care about the accuracy of the wiki (ie, the staff and regular contributors) don't have the time and money to go see the movie again just to jot down when characters appear, so may I suggest we remove the numbering nonsense and restore this box to the way it was before whichever staff member opened up the anonymous floodgates? --FFN 06:34, 15 July 2009 (EDT)
<s>One to be added is that the Predator drone is depicted two different ways. The Predator has a propellor, and you can see this when it takes off since it's footage of the actual vehicle. When the CGI model of the Predator approaches the battle, it has no propellor. Sure I have my doubts that would happen in the real-world, but that is the in-fiction explanation. That is the same fictional universe that gave us... well, this movie. That is hardly the least believable thing. - Starfield 11:35, 25 October 2009 (EDT)
It's a Decepticon!!
This part has always left me kind of confused. At some point in the movie, as also written in the synopsis in here, "[...] in order to read the symbols, they may need a Decepticon. Mikaela then interrogates Wheelie, who identifies the symbols as the Language of the Primes, and suggests they may track down one of the ancient Seekers [...]"

So, if they already knew that they needed for a Decepticon, what reason did they have to freak out like that when they reawakened Jetfire and saw his Decepticon symbol? --Sharky7 03:23, 6 March 2011 (EST)
:I think it's that they probably weren't expecting the Seeker that they're looking for to be also a Decepticon. Wheelie's the only Decepticon they've somewhat gotten along with fine without fear of loosing any body parts. Being Cybertronian he might not understand the Language of the Primes itself but he is able to recognize the origins. Question regarding featured characters: What are opinions on how Terrorcons and Mini-Cons should be handled?
* For instance, Scorponok, while briefly conscipted into the Decepticon forces, was pretty explicitely not a Decepticon, neither at the beginning of the series, nor after Megatron tied him up and sent him into the energon grid as bait. Therefore, I've had him listed as a Terrorcon (or, "Other") at the beginning, a Decepticon after Megatron beat him and branded him, and then as a Terrorcon again after pretty clearly defecting.
:There've been a dozen Transformers series. One of them has to be the worst. That's Energon.
Energon settled the issue, just like Kiss Players settled the "raping my childhood" debate by actually raping your childhood. Energon is the worst Transformers series by such a wide and universal margin... there's no point in pretending it's otherwise.
:Maybe that'll teach him not to try to have sex with a goat. (By which I mean-- that will, and has taught Hasbro not to co-produce with Japan. I don't think they will ever attempt it again.) -Derik 04:26, 4 May 2009 (EDT)

So I was thinking I would try my hand at actually creating a page and adding some real content. I was gonna do it for Black Friday since it doesn't have a page, but I wanted to make sure there wasn't some rule against doing this for episodes that haven't aired yet, even though they already showed this one at Botcon. --Rose.T 06:48, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
:We have a 30 day moratorium on 'club-exclusive' material. (So people don't just rush here and reach rephrased synopses instead of signing up. Also because if you opt for the cheap shipping your stuff arrives later.) In that instance, the material being 'protected' by the moratorium increases in value (for Fun Pub) because it is protected. Black Friday is not a club exclusive (it was a con exclusive,) refraining from documenting it does not increase its value- or offer any secondary value to people who sign up for the collector's club in the future (unlike other club premiums, future members will never 'get' to watch he episode early again.)
Aaaand since the discussion got nuked, I'll just repost my last point which was not spoilerish. You're not getting what I'm saying, KrytenKoro. They were detonated because they were living bombs. That's a bit different. Those two are likely not going to be back, or if they are they'll basically be clones based off of the same archetypes, not the same characters. The clones are inherently disposable. The G1 cast pages don't list every individual insecticon clone.--RosicrucianTalk 04:06, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
::glory be...anyway, I get what you're saying. However, by that tack we might as well remove all the Guest characters until they make multiple appearances. The Insecticon clones, as far as I understand, where "perfect" clones - same design, same personality, and more an ability then actual characters. The Starscream clones have different designs and personalities, and seem to be getting different toys. They have a named faction which plays as an important "third party" in the series, and may not all have the same voice actor. I get that, by the nature of their appearance they "probably" won't come back in the same capacity, but I still feel that they play a big enough role in that episode to be considered full characters, and that they are unique enough to not just be labeled "generic". However, if it will work as a compromise, could we at least list Starscream clones as a cast "member"?
I don't know how impressive this is. David Kaye was in every North American series except RiD and G1, and Susan Blu accounts for G1.--RosicrucianTalk 01:55, 22 May 2009 (EDT)
Can't believe I didn't thought to bring this up after BotCon '09... *chagrined look* Those of us that attended the "Animating Animated" panel remember one of the shorts they showed, that of where Starscream's leader of the Decepticons, Megatron's his most loyal servant, and everything's all nice? In reality, it was all a nice dream because Screamer fell asleep during one of their "staff meetings". --Lonegamer78 23:23, 4 July 2009 (EDT)
ABC Warriors influence
Normally, I would dismiss this as coincidence, but since Wyatt has specifically said that ABC Warriors was an influence on the Animated character designs, I wonder if it would be a good idea to note the similarities in the relevant character pages. == Connection to Go-bots ==

I find it odd that no one has noticed that the production of this series was done by Cartoon Network Studios who started as a division of Hanna-Barbera who produced the Go-Bot's Series. The nice part is Technically CNS is H-B post 2006 Warner droped new series useing the brand after the last founder died.

Fiction
Generation 1 cartoon
Nightbird was a robotic ninja warrior created by Doctor Fujiyama the Famous Scientist, ostensibly to show how advanced Human technology had become. The Decepticons stole Nightbird, and Bombshell implanted her with an enhanced brain chip which turned the drone-like Nightbird into a true butt-kicking machine. Nightbird broke into the Ark and stole the Autobots' World Energy Chip, which contained the locations of a variety of energy sources, energy sources that the Decepticons would most assuredly use for conquest!

The Autobots were, at first, hampered by their promise to Doctor Fujiyama not to damage or destroy the ninja robot, and found themselves flustered in botched attempts to capture her. Eventually, however, they used an energy net which drained Nightbird's power reserves and allowed the Autobots to capture her without serious damage.

Doctor Fujiyama placed Nightbird into cold storage, but apparently didn't see fit to fully deactivate her, as she seems aware of her plight and gives an angry glare as she's stored away. Not that we've ever seen her again. Enter the Nightbird

In 2025 or so, Fujiyama, apparently having learned nothing, built an entire army of Nightbird drones. When they went on a rampage, Arcee, Daniel Witwicky and Wheelie came to the doctor's aid. Though they were rather outnumbered, the group could hold off the drones long enough for Hot Spot to arrive with help and an evacuation shuttle. This was only just too late for Wheelie, who found his back slashed open by a Nightbird drone, disabling him from getting to the shuttle. Loyal to his friend, Daniel stayed with him as the others fled. When he could no longer fight off the drones, he detonated an explosive to destroy them, killing himself and Wheelie in the process.

Presumably, the Nightbird drones were all destroyed, since they are never seen or mentioned again. Departure
