Nightbird was Megatron's precious cuddle-wumpus in Generation 1 continuity

Generation 1
Animated Continuity
Nightbird was a robotic ninja warrior created by the "famous scientist" Doctor Fujiyama, ostensibly to show how advanced Human technology had become. The Decepticons stole Nightbird, and Bombshell implanted her with an enhanced brain chip which turned the drone-like Nightbird into a true ass-kicking machine. Nightbird broke into the Ark and stole the Autobots' World Energy Chip, which contained the locations of a variety of energy sources, energy sources that the Decepticons would most assuredly use for conquest!

The Autobots were, at first, hampered by their promise to Doctor Fujiyama not to damage or destroy the ninja robot, and found themselves flustered in botched attempts to capture her. Eventually, however, they used an Energy Net which drained Nightbird's power reserves and allowed the Autobots to capture her without serious damage.

Doctor Fujiyama placed Nightbird into cold storage, but apparently didn't see fit to fully deactivate her, as she seems aware of her plight and gives an angry glare as she's stored away.

3H Wreckers Comics
In 2025 or so Fujiyama built an entire army of Nightbird drones. Daniel Witwicky detonated an explosive to destroy them, killing himself and Wheelie in the process. This event caused Arcee to enter a deep depression, setting the stage for her personality change as she became a Wrecker.

Presumably, the Nighbird drones were all destroyed, since they are never seen or mentioned again.

Dreamwave
In the Dreamwave comics, a science fiction movie Enter the Nightbird featured Nightbird kicking shiny metal robo-ass.

Trivia
The Chiba Institute of Technology actually built a ninja robot in 2003. Martial arts is used as a benchmark of physical dexterity in robotics.

Apocrypha
Various fan fiction authors have paired Nightbord with Megatron as a potential love interest, based on a few lines of dialog where Megatron declares how impressed he is of her skills. Some fans have deliberately misinterpreted these lines as cries of affection, something that Megatron has never shown being capable of (not that it comes up much in the cartoon).

It's unlikely that Megatron would regard Nightbird as a 'real' robot (IE, a Cybertronian), since she had no personality component to speak of, and showed no signs of a personality or much capability for independant thought - except the sole angry glare as she's being shoved into storage.

Daniel Witwicky is a human in Generation 1 continuity.

Daniel Witwicky is the human son of Spike and Carly Witwicky. He is approximately 12 years of age in 2005, and was presumably born sometime between 1990 and 1993. He is the grandson of Sparkplug Witwicky.

Daniel often gets into trouble, which requires either his father or the Autobots to save him.

Daniel is the Headmaster partner to Arcee.

Fiction
Generation 1 Cartoon
Voice actor: David Mendenhall (US), Mayumi Tanaka → Masumi Gotō → Tomiko Suzuki (Japan)

In the year 2005, Daniel appeared to be in the care of Hot Rod at Autobot City while his father was preparing for an assault on the Decepticon-held planet Cybertron from Moonbase 1.

Following a brutal Decepticon attack on the city (in which he was almost killed), Daniel tearfully witnessed the death of Optimus Prime, sobbing on the fallen commander's hand as the color left his corpse.

Escaping from a second Decepticon attack, Daniel and a group of Autobots were stranded on Junkion (planet), where Daniel donned his father's old exo-suit to weather the harsh environment. He did not get much time to enjoy the suit, as yet another Decepticon assault left Ultra Magnus dead and stirred the native Junkions into violent action. Daniel proved his worth in this battle by smacking Junkion leader Wreck-Gar with an I-beam, saving a prone Springer.

Hostilities with the Junkions were settled with the arrival of Hot Rod and Kup, Ultra Magnus was revived, and a brief celebration was held wherein Daniel showed he could boogey down.

Daniel joined the combined Autobot-Junkion attack force in the assault on Unicron. He was on the ship that plunged into Unicron's eye, and soon became separated from the main Autobot group. As luck would have it, he ended up in Unicron's acid-based digestion center, where he was able to save his father, Bumblebee, Jazz, and Cliffjumper from certain death.

Daniel and the rest soon met up with the other Autobots inside of Unicron. Everything around them was exploding! And then came this Rodimus Prime guy. Spike and Daniel hopped into his front seat, all of the Autobots drove out of Unicron's undamaged eye, through space (!), and back to Cybertron as Unicron blew up. Daniel looked on as Rodimus gave a heroic speech.

Daniel would subsequently be around to watch his father get kidnapped by Sharkticons, witness Optimus Prime's revival as a zombie, become the subject of a Quintesson dream/reality experiment, try to determine Ultra Magnus's birthday, bring a mad Quintesson wizard to justice, and steal Trypticon's transforming cog.

Following those adventures, Daniel took on the role of "chew-toy" and was seriously injured in an attack by Snapdragon and required extensive life support. Arcee volunteered her own systems to assist in saving Daniel's life. Her head was reconfigured into an exo-suit, and allowed Daniel to become Arcee's Headmaster partner.

Daniel is good friends with both Wheelie and Grimlock.

The Headmasters
(The Headmasters anime ignores the events of the 3-part "The Rebirth" story arc.)

In 2011, Daniel seemed to be regressing in maturity. He hung out with Wheelie a whole lot more than was probably healthy, and the two shared constant adventures. In fact, at one point, Daniel and Wheelie defeated Trypticon by tricking him into trying to walk a rope bridge across a deep gorge.

As the series progressed, Daniel changed from a snot-nosed little cry-baby into a responsible young man. These coming-of-age adventures included traveling alone to a robot-killing asteroid, befriending the murderous psychopath, Sixshot, and finally rescuing his Mom from inside a narrow crevice she had tumbled into, injuring herself.

Real men don't cry, Danny.

The Headmasters Manga
Shortly after Mega Zarak and the Decepticons were driven from Earth, Soundblaster showed up and took Daniel's family hostage. Not havin' none-a that, Daniel finally snapped. He went insane and took on both Slugfest and Overkill in a bare-knuckle brawl, defeating the pair of Cassette dinosaurs and leaving Soundblaster open to an attack from Chromedome.

Marvel Comics
In 2009, the Terrorcons and the rest of the Decepticons rampaged across Earth unhindered, and Daniel and his father Spike were rescued from the carnage by Kup. Kup brought them to Autobot City, where Daniel convinced Rodimus Prime that he wasn't devoting enough resources towards defending Earth.

Universe: The Wreckers
Daniel detonated an explosive to destroy a legion of Nightbird drones, killing himself and Wheelie in the process. This event caused Arcee to enter a deep depression, setting the stage for her personality change as she became a Wrecker.

Dreamwave Generation 1
Daniel could be seen running around his home with his father, Spike. He wears pajamas to bed.

Coloring Books
In The Lost Treasure of Cybertron, Buster Witwicky and Jesse were portrayed as Daniel's parents. Daniel, however, looked the same as he always did.

Super Figure Collection
*A PVC figure of Daniel in his exo-suit was released in Takara's Super Figure Collection series.

Additional notes
* In Japanese continuity, it is not explained why Daniel did not seem to age between the animated film, which took place in 2005, and their season three, which took place in 2010. To the contrary, in Headmasters his mental age seemed to regress.
Spike Witwicky is the oldest (or only) son of Sparkplug Witwicky.

Spike was an adolescent woking with his father Sparkplug on an oil rig, when the Decepticons attacked. After the Autobots rescued them, they volunteered to become their native guides to planet Earth.

Spike had many adventures with the Autobots. In the course of these adventures he met Carly an impetuous prodigy and MIT graduate. Despite being smarter than him, older than thim (she could drive) and hotter than him, Carly displayed a noticable affection for the somewhat-dim Spike. They mated and produced offspring.

Spike later become an ambassador or something and then a Headmaster partner to Cerebros. He polished up good.

Marvel Comics continuity
Generation 1
(Note: Events from the UK-only comic stories are in italics.)

Spike Witwicky was away at college for the first few years of the Autobot/Decepticon war on Earth until he returned home to find his younger brother Buster kidnapped by the Decepticons. Spike soon became the binary-bond partner to the Headmaster Fortress Maximus, after Fortress Maximus' first partner, Galen, was killed in a battle with the Deception Scorponok.

In an alternate timeline in the year 2009, Decepticons had built a machine to destroy Earth while a space-time anomaly was eating entire planets. After Rodimus Prime orchestrated a plan to travel twenty years back in time to the source of the anomaly, Spike Witwicky and his son Daniel accused Rodimus of shirking his responsibilities towards Earth and guilted Rodimus into allotting more troops to help destroy the Decepticons' machine.

In another alternate timeline in the year 2009, Spike Witwicky was part of a very small Autobot/human resistance movement in a world where Galvatron II's Decepticons controlled North America. The handful of Autobots who remained alive despaired and were on the cusp of giving up, but Spike and Lisa (who shared growing feelings for each other) guilted them into one last suicidal attack on Decepticon headquarters in New York before the rest of the world could unleash a nuclear holocaust onto America at midnight. Though there were several casualties, Spike managed to hoist an American flag on the Decepticon stronghold on live television, a symbollic measure which prompted the end of the planned nuclear strike. Before Galvatron II could respond, the Decepticon despot was abducted by Hook, Line, and Sinker into another timeline.
