: Big Convoy is a Maximal leader from the Beast Wars era of the Generation 1 continuity.

Big Convoy is a high-ranking yet severely anti-social general in the Maximal army. He is often called by his nickname, "the One-Man Army", due to his lone-wolf behavior and immense skill in battle. He can transform into a wooly mammoth and his weapon of choice is the Big Cannon. At one point he was a freelancer, working with Rockbuster, until he joined the Maximal army officially. He has a heated but respectful rivalry with Predacon Emperor of Destruction, Magmatron. The Maximal Elders recognize Big Convoy's skill and dedication yet do not approve of his introverted attitude.
(NOTE: Big Convoy is often referred to, in the fandom, as "Maximus Prime"...are you listening, Hasbro?)

Fiction
Beast Wars Neo cartoon
Voice actor: Junichi Inoue

Hoping to curve Big Convoy's psychotically anti-social behavior, the Maximal Elders ordered him to train a crew of unruly new recruits. Big Convoy loathed the assignment at first, but being a loyal soldier, accepted the task. His first mission was to explore Gaia and investigate the disappearance of Leo Prime. Little did he know, Magmatron and his Predacons were following close behind him. After finding a black box message from Lio Convoy, Big Convoy learned of the Angolmois capsules ejected after the destruction of the Nemesis. Big Convoy then headed off with his group of trainees to collect the capsules, battling Magmatron every step of the way.

Big Convoy is not one for compassion or sentimental gobbly-gook. Because of this bitter attitude, Vector Sigma took it upon-itself to dispense words of wisdom and encouragement to the recruits directly through Big Convoy, via his Leadership Matrix. Big Convoy hated it at first, but over the course of the adventure, the sense of compassion began to rub-off on him and he started giving words of advice all on his own.

Eventually, after the Maximals and Predacons collected all the capsules, they were attacked by the Blentrons, a fearsome trio of nearly invincible Transformers. The Blentrons beat the mortal hell out of him, the Maximals and the Predacons, taking the Angolmois capsules. As it turned out, the Angolmois energy was really the essence of Unicron and the Blentrons were his creations.

The Blentrons released the Angolomois energy into the corpse of Galvatron, resurrecting Unicron. Big Convoy and the Maximals raced him back to Cybertron but were side-tracked by being sucked into a wormhole. It was actually the same wormhole that sucked-in Leo Prime and his crew after their battle against the Nemesis. Leo Prime told Big Convoy the history of Unicron and helped him escape the wormhole.

The Maximals arrived too late; Unicron had already destroyed the Maximal armada (and Great Convoy with it) and possessed Vector Sigma, turning Cybertron into his new body. Big Convoy, the Maximal recruits and Magmatron stood side-by-side to fight the menace. Unicron briefly exited Vector Sigma to swat his opponents. Using their new-found teamwork, the Maximals managed to hold Unicron off while Big Convoy powered up his trademarked Big Cannon with his own Leadership Matrix. This upgraded his Big Cannon into the Matrix Buster. Big Convoy unleashed a blast from his Matrix Buster directly into Unicron, seemingly destroying him.

With Unicron evicted from Vector Sigma, Big Convoy and Magmatron chose to put aside their differences. Together, all missing Maximals and Predacons set adrift (especially those from Beast Wars II) returned to Cybertron to help rebuild the planet. In the final shot, Big Convoy, Magmatron and Leo Prime were shown standing side-by-side beneath Vector Sigma.

"Grimlock hate Optimus Prime. Grimlock believe leader should show strength by attacking quickly and mercilessly! Prime often reconsider or hesitate, in fear of possible casualties, both Transformer and squishy -- Grimlock say that cowardice! If Grimlock were in charge, war would have been over long ago."

Some Autobots wonder why Grimlock is even on their side. His disposition is much more suited towards the Decepticons. After all, he values power and strength over wisdom and compassion, and furthermore, he doesn't get along with any of the Autobots. It's been hypothesized that Grimlock just hates Megatron more than he hates Optimus. (Which means he must hate him A LOT.)

Grimlock is the leader of the Dinobots, a small but very close team of misfits. It's been said that anyone who enters a battle with the Dinobots usually leaves it feet-first.

(Grimlock's intelligence-level differed greatly between the comic and cartoon, leading to vastly different portrayals. See the entries below for details.)
Fiction
Marvel Comics continuity
Comic Grimlock (and the other Dinobots as well) were much more intelligent than their Cartoon counterparts. They weren't Perceptor mind you, but they had average, functional intellects. When he first appeared in the comic Grimlock spoke normally, but later the Comic adopted the caveman-esque speach of the cartoon (though only for Grimlock himself, the other Dinobots continued to speak normally.) This vocal tic was alternately portrayed as a malfunction or an intentional choice by Grimlock, but in either case, he retained his full intelligence. Grimlock was a powerful and arrogant warrior who believed he knew best. He ascended to the post of overall Autobot leader on several occasions, growing in the process and eventually, despite their original conflict, becoming Optimus's hand-picked leutenant and likely successor. Early on, Blaster was a major thorn in his side, deserting his command. Later, he tended to fight with the straight-laced, logical Prowl.

Animated continuity
:Voice Actor: Greg Berger (US), Takurō Kitagawa (Japan)

(Note: In the animated series, Grimlock was more dimwitted than in most other continuities. As the series progressed, he was portrayed increasingly as a comic relief character.)

Cartoon Grimlock, like all the cartoon Dinobots, has a stereotypical "caveman" type personality and intellect level. They originally decide to help the Autobots, for instance, because "them have face like this on chest..." Pre-movie this lack of intelligence is usually coupled together with their great power to make them dangerous wild cards; Post-movie, however, Grimlock and the Dinobots are generally played as just plain dumb for comic relief.

When mysterious tremors shook the Autobot base, Wheeljack's investigation revealed strange objects behind a rock wall. After removing the wall, the Autobots found a cave full of dinosaur bones. The Autobots decided the idea of dinosaurs was interesting and researched the prehistoric beasts. Wheeljack and Ratchet asked Optimus Prime if they could build robot dinosaurs, and Prime agreed this was a good idea. Grimlock, Slag, and Sludge were built and unveiled to the Autobots, but the Dinobots were dimwitted and violent, and they attacked their makers. Grimlock blasted Teletraan I with his fire-breath, damaging it. Optimus Prime decreed that the Dinobots must be destroyed. However, Wheeljack convinced him instead to lock them away, and the trio were herded back into the cave and buried alive.

Later, the Decepticons took over a hydroelectric plant, but when the Autobots arrived to stop them, the Autobots were defeated and captured. Wheeljack, Ratchet, and Bumblebee, left behind at Autobot base to finish repairing Teletraan-I, decided to go against Optimus' orders and release the Dinobots, but not before upgrading their brains to be smarter and more obedient. After the Dinobots are reactivated, Wheeljack asks them to save their friends. Grimlock says he will obey... this time. They successfully attack the Decepticons and free the imprisoned Autobots. Optimus forgives Wheeljack, Ratchet, and Bumblebee for disobeying his orders and welcomes the victorious Dinobots back to the Autobots.

After a meteor surging with unknown energies struck the Earth, Optimus ordered the three Dinobots to guard it. He was so pleased with the Dinobots he asked Ratchet and Wheeljack to build two more. Meanwhile, Megatron was frustrated at the Dinobots' success, and sent Soundwave to probe them for potential weaknesses. Reading the Dinobots' minds, he discovered that Grimlock was arrogant and believed he would make a better leader than the weak Optimus Prime. Megatron decided to use this to his advantage, and approached them himself. He played to Grimlock's jealousy and agreed with him that the strongest should be leader. The Dinobots declared Optimus Prime their enemy.

Realizing the meteorite was due to explode, Optimus left to warn the Dinobots, but they attacked him. Instead of destroying him completely, however, Grimlock carried him to the Decepticons, who had stolen the meteorite during the battle. Megatron was angry that Optimus Prime was not destroyed, and Starscream suggested that despite Grimlock's arrogance, inside he was still compassionate. This enraged Grimlock. They were interrupted by the two new Dinobots, Snarl and Swoop, whom Megatron ordered the original three Dinobots to attack. At the climax of the battle, the meteorite exploded, but Optimus Prime pushed Grimlock out of the way, saving him. Grimlock realized the error of his ways and the Dinobots forced the Decepticons into retreat. Grimlock apologized for his jealousy.

The Decepticons joined forces with Sub-Atlantica and staged a full-scale attack on Washington, D.C.. The Autobots were overwhelmed, forcing Wheeljack to call for the Dinobots' assistance. Grimlock expressed his frustration at being called whenever the Autobots were in over their heads. With their help, the Autobots were able to overturn the Decepticons' advance and plunge the city of Sub-Atlantica, burning, into the sea. This pattern of the Autobots' dependence on the Dinobots repeated when the artificial intelligence TORQ III turned machines against mankind. With every piece of help he and his troops gave, Grimlock was never slow to add a scathing remark about the inabilities of the Autobots. That said, he was not unwilling to admit the failings of his own troops, either, and willingly took them to the time-displaced "Dinobot Island," where they trained in the wilderness and helped stop a Decepticon raid on the prehistoric paradise.

The final straw for Grimlock came when he and the Dinobots were injured in a Decepticon trap at an airfield. Enraged, Grimlock refused to take orders from Optimus Prime any more, and led the Dinobots away from the Ark. When the Autobots began to suffer from Cybertonium deficiency, Spike Witwicky and his girlfriend Carly attempted to persuade the Dinobots - who continued to function perfectly, as they had been built on Earth without Cybertonium - to steal some of the mineral from a Decepticon shipment coming in from Cybertron. Grimlock instead opted to lead the Dinobots to Cybertron itself, where they were captured by Shockwave and put to work in the Cybertonium mines, until Spike and Carly rescued them. Brought back to Earth, the Dinobots agreed to follow Prime's order again - until such time as Grimlock didn't feel like it.

By the Earth year 2005, it seemed apparent that Grimlock had undergone some degree of a personality change, becoming more childish and petulant, rather than brutish and stubborn. Throughtout 2006, he regularly participated in missions with his fellow Autobots rather than the other Dinobots, battling on the planets of Chaar, Goo, Dredd and Eurythma. He and Daniel Witwicky were transported to the sorcerous other-dimensional realm of Menonia, where Grimlock was duped into fighting on the side of the tyrannical Quintesson, the Red Wizard, and later, he helped to sniff out the "dinosaur transform static" that implicated Trypticon in the theft of world monuments. Later in the year, when Decepticon leader Galvatron had Cybertron infused with function-inverting anti-electrons, a dose of the particles gave Grimlock super-intelligence. During a mission to Unicron's disembodied head, where the Autobots were outmatched by the new Decepticon Terrorcons, Grimlock used components of Unicron's head to construct the Technobots to battle them. Combined as Computron, the Technobots felt they could not match the Terrorcons, until Grimlock transferred his super-intelligence into Computron, reverting to his old self and allowing the Technobots to claim victory.

Grimlock's greatest victory came when he and a large number of other Transformers with animal transformations were summoned to a world at the centre of the galaxy by the ex-assistant of the ancient genius, Primacron, creator of Unicron. The assistant had assembled these "Primitive" Transformers in the hope that their simple instincts could defeat Primacron's newest creation, Tornedron, but one by one they fell to him, with Grimlock apparently crushed under Trypticon. Grimlock survived, however, and followed Tornedron back to Primacron's lab. When Tornedron turned on his master, like his predecessor, Primacron's complicated plans and equations could not find a way to stop him; Grimlock, on the other hand, randomly flicked a switch which reversed Tornedron's energy polarity, undoing the damage he and done and dissipating. Dancing around over his successful saving of the universe, Grimlock decimated Primacron's lab, dubbing it the smartest thing he'd ever done

Binaltech
After the Dinobots were defeated and deactivated on Earth, Grimlock was rebuilt using Binaltech technology to save his life. He hates his new Ford Mustang form.

Dreamwave comics continuity
In the Dreamwave comics continuity Grimlock displays Patton like leadership rivaling Optimus Prime. He also was a traitor, and the "rebel" of the autobots. Consistency wasn't Dreamwave's strong suit.

Beast Wars
* IDW's The Gathering
: When Razorbeast and Optimus Minor where attempting to "rescue" Megatron from Magmatron, Grimlock showed up and acted as the perfect distraction (it is mentioned that he was on board the Axalon in stasis lock). Grimlock and Magmatron battled, with Magmatron arising as the victor -- they fought in their beast mode, so Magamtron had him out numbered three to one. Grimlock was knocked out, but can later be seen in the background of a panel of the final page, helping to construct a fence. It is assumed he will have a greater role in future Beast Wars comics, provided IDW obliges.

IDW comics continuity
Grimlock, and the rest of the Dynobots were a close-knit group of hunters, suffering from neither low intelligence nor Grimlock's traditional speech impairment.

After Shockwave destroyed a caché of Energon the Dynobots had been hoarding, causing them severe Energon burns and causing them to feel humiliated, they swore revenge. And so, against orders from Optimus Prime, they followed Shockwave when he left Cybertron to stablise "Ultra-Energon" deposits he had sent to other worlds as a precaution against the depletion of Cybertron's own Energon reserves.

When Shockwave reached his first destination - Earth, at the end of the last Ice Age - the Dynobots destroyed his ship and, reluctantly in Grimlock's case, took on dinosaur alternate modes with synthetic flesh coatings to protect against the high levels of Energon radiation (see also Beast Wars), Grimlock having rejected the suggestion of a mammoth alternate mode as even less palatable.

On transporting down to the planet's surface to confront Shockwave, they gained an initial advantage, as Shockwave's logic was unable to comprehend the effort and risks they had taken for their revenge. However, when Shockwave recognised this weakness shut down his logic processors and operated a "rage" program to enable him to operate on pure instinct, he shrugged off their attacks and beat them severely, ending by burning off their organic coatings. Unable to accept another defeat, Grimlock transformed to robot mode and fought against his immenent stasis lock to no avail.

However, before leaving the Dynobots' ship, he had enabled a "dead man's switch", designed to take Shockwave with them if they were defeated. On entering stasis lock, this failsafe activated, firing on a nearby dormant volcano, causing an eruption which buried Shockwave and the Dynobots under ash and lava.

However, in 2006, Shockwave was discovered by a team of human archelogists. Whether he, Grimlock or the rest of the Dynobots can/will be reactivated remains to be seen.
In Japan, he was only available in a boxed "Hero Set" with the other three Legends toys, but with a silver face rather than the Hasbro version's orange.

* Grimlock (Action Master)
: Part of the initial assortment of non-transforming Action Master figures, Grimlock's design combines his cartoon model with extra toy-based detaling. He came with the Anti-Tank Cannon "partner" machine which Grimlock could ride, or be unfolded to form a really big "long range mortar launcher."

Generation 2
* Grimlock (Dinobot)
: Grimlock's original toy was redecoed for release in Generation 2, this time lacking the missile launcher accessory. He was available in three different colors; the first --and rarest-- in his original silver (the easiest way to spot if this is a G2 or original is by the "Autobot" tampograph on his leg), then in a medium truqoise-blue, and finally (and most commonly) in a dark blue.

:(Note: Grimlock outranked Optimus Prime in the G2 toyline! (Prime had a rank of 9.)

Beast Wars
* Grimlock (Deluxe)
: Beast Wars Grimlock is a redeco of Dinobot in gray and gold with black spots, transforming into a "raptor" of some variety. His tail becomes a sword and a rotate-blade. He was slightly retooled to have space for an "energon chip" rubsign.

: This mold is also used by Dinobots Grimlock, and was retooled to make Dinotron, Hardhead and Thrustor.

Beast Machines
:T-Wrecks may have been intended to be a new form for Grimlock, based on the references in his tech spec bio to his Beast Wars "Attack Specialist" function and other hints. However, T-Wrecks' appearances in the Universe: The Wreckers comics suggests he is a new, unrelated character.

Alternators
* Grimlock
: He's a Ford Mustang.

Universe
:The Grimlock toy released in Energon was originally created by Hasbro for release as a special new-mold addition for the Universe toyline and was intended to represent Generation 1 Grimlock. However, it wasn't and it didn't.

Classics
*Grimlock (Deluxe, 2006)
: Classics Grimlock, a gray and gold Tyrannosaurus rex, is a reimagined form of his original toy. In robot mode, his tail can detach to become a sword/whip. His bayonette blaster can be deployed in either mode.

:Signal Flare is an Autobot-allied Omnicon in the Energon portion of the Unicron Trilogy.

Signal Flare is a craftsman; he loves spending his time carefully sculpting raw Energon into powerful weapons. He's considerably less interested in applying them to combat, though he's certainly no slouch in that department. Still, he'd rather leave the slice-and-dice to his feistier brother Offshoot.

He is very intelligent, and his ability to to both detect and manipulate Energon in its various forms, be it solid, energy or gaseous, make him an invaluable member of the Autobot forces.

Sometimes there are lots of him, other times he starts every statement with "CRZ!".

The Signal Flares are a type of Omnicon, a group of identical individuals all presumably sharing the same name. Like Marklars.

A team of Signal Flares was vital in the proces of building Energon Towers. A Signal Flare also scanned and replicated the Megatron Sword, while another one (well, presumably another one) discovered that Alpha Quintesson's sun produces Energon radiation.

Dreamwave Energon Comic
Signal Flare and his fellow Omnicons are upgraded Mini-Cons. He and Skyblast guarded Over-Run's access point in the Mini-Con village Six-Beta. Later, they were sent by Over-Run to assist Optimus Prime in repelling the Horsemen of Unicron. They then went to Earth to stop Scorponok and his Terrorcons in Australia.

Proving to be a bit too out of control to base near human cities, they were sent to the site of a new energon well in the Yukon. They were captured by Snow Cat while blowing off some steam, who attempted to rewrite their programming to turn them into Decepticons. Subconciously guided by the snarky floating advice-giving head of Over-Run, they managed to break free by combining their powers. More teamwork led to Snow Cat's defeat, and a better understanding of their abilities.

On a mission with Kicker Jones to the Black Sea in Turkey to locate a new energon well underwater, Signal Flare create the energon bubble that protected Kicker from the crushing pressure of the deep sea. But they were attacked by Mirage (who had previously butted heads with them as Tidal Wave), Slugslinger and Sharkticon, who were attempting to capture the energon-empathic human. Though the Omnicons were beaten down, Kicker’s powers revitalized the them and allowed them to force the Decepticons to retreat

: Signal Flare transforms into a Cybertronic half-track MASER tank. Moving the MASER arm causes the dish on the end to spin. The dish can be combined with a pair of shields to form his Energy Cutter. The Japanese version of the toy uses a very different shade of tan.

: The mold is also used by his brother Offshoot. The Signal Flare/Offshoot body design is used as the model for the Attacktix Omnicon.
*Signal Flare USA Edition (Omnicon, 2004)

: In Japan, the Offshoot toy was made available as a store exclusive, sold as a new incarnation of the Signal Flare "character".

Trivia
* A MASER tank is a vehicle created in the Japanese Godzilla movie series. This would make Signal Flare's Terrorcon counterpart Cruellock, who is patterned on the 1998 American-movie version of Godzilla. MASER tanks never really worked all that well against whatever giant monster was stomping around each week.

* Development sketches from Aaron Archer reveal that part of the inspiration for Signal Flare's vehicle mode was the disinctively-shaped Cobra H.I.S.S. tank from the G.I. Joe toy line.
:Jetfire is an Autobot from the Generation 1 series. In the animated continuity he was known as Skyfire.

Jetfire is a bot of science, literally. Not only is his mind dedicated towards scientific pursuits, but his body is a testament to the technology he studies so intensely. (Some would say "religiously," but not in his presence.) Every inch of his chassis is cutting-edge and kept up-to-date. However, he does not have the trust of his teammates; it was not so long ago that he was a Decepticon. Jetfire is compassionate, so some Autobots feel that he could be soft on their enemies or, even worse, he may turn on them after realizing his "cold calculations" swing the other way.

Jetfire would find their misconceptions about science appalling. After all, is not science just the pursuit of truth? And truth, he maintains, walks hand-in-hand with liberty.
(In the Generation 1 animated series, Jetfire went by the name Skyfire. His character model was significantly altered from the toy, as was his appearance in nearly all media. See Why "Skyfire"?, below.)

Fire in the SkyMillions of years ago on Cybertron, before the war, Skyfire and Starscream were good friends and fellow scientists. On a mission of exploration to prehistoric Earth, Skyfire was lost in a storm. Starscream searched, but there was no sign of his comrade. He returned home.

Millions of years later, after the Autobots and Decepticons had crashed and awoken on Earth, the Decepticons found and revived Skyfire, encased in a block of Arctic ice. Skyfire joined them due to his past friendship with Starscream, though he expressed discomfort with their methods. When Skyfire's compassion for humans led to his disobeying orders, Starscream, who had changed much in the intervening millennia, turned on his friend. Skyfire left the Decepticons and joined the Autobots, sacrificing himself to be buried beneath the ice again to stop the Decepticons' plans. The Autobots held a memorial service in his memory at the location of his involuntary burial.

Fire on the MountainThe Autobots returned later to dig him up when they needed a ride down to South America. Megatron and his Decepticons were in Brazil seeking the Crystal of Power, which was kept in an Aztec temple. After battling the Decepticons, Skyfire arrived at the temple to find Thundercracker guarding it and the crystal inside. Thundercracker was angry at Starscream, and was willing to let Skyfire past him to destroy the crystal so long as Starscream got in trouble. Starscream overheard this and shot Skyfire in the back, knocking him out.

At one point, Optimus Prime actually pats Skyfire on his jet mode's nosecone, like a dog. Sucks to be Skyfire.

Marvel Comics continuity
Brainstorm!Early in the war on Earth, Shockwave held the head of Optimus Prime captive, hoping to use the Creation Matrix he possessed to create a new army of Decepticons. Optimus Prime had secretly passed the energies of the Matrix onto the teenaged human, Buster Witwicky, so Shockwave was stopped short of giving Jetfire's constructed body life. Shockwave soon learned of the human's involvement, so he sent Jetfire after the human anyway, though the lifeless robot could do nothing more than follow orders. When Jetfire found Buster, he was accompanied by the Autobots Bluestreak and Bumblebee for his protection, but it was Buster's Creation Matrix powers that ultimately disassembled Jetfire before their eyes. Buster reassembled Jetfire, and with Bumblebee's help, changes were made to allow Buster to directly control him.

Prime Time! However, Jetfire's programming reasserted itself, and maneuvered so wildly that Buster, riding in the cockpit, blacked out. Buster woke up inside Shockwave's base (a former Blackrock Industries plant), strapped to a machine ready to drill the Creation Matrix out of him. In the meantime, knowing that the Autobots were eavesdropping on him, Shockwave sent Jetfire to drop a fake Optimus Prime head at a disclosed location for the Autobots to find. The fake head attached itself to Optimus Prime's body and began attacking the Autobots, causing many injuries. At the last moment, Buster was able to control Jetfire once again, knocking out Shockwave, and delivering the true Optimus Prime head to the Autobots, allowing for them a costly victory.

With Optimus Prime fully restored, Jetfire was quickly given life and joined the Autobots, the Rite of the Autobrand marking him as one of their rank. When Bumblebee, depressed, had left the Autobots and gotten himself attacked by the Decepticons, Jetfire eagerly came to his rescue. Later, Jetfire helped the Autobots approach the Decepticon base to steal information that would allow them to build their own combiners. He also accompanied Donny Finkleberg to the spot where Finkleberg claimed seven Autobots had crossed over from Cybertron, though they found nothing but traces of oil.

After the death of Optimus Prime, Jetfire voted for the Dinobot Grimlock to take command. He later seemed to regret this decision, offering to help Blaster usurp him, and when the rivalry ended in a duel staged on Earth's moon, he was among the Autobots who watched. When the Autobots were ambushed by the entire Decepticon army, he was blasted out of the sky by both Vortex and Laserbeak.

Jetfire was destroyed along with the Aerialbots and countless others in New York when Starscream absorbed the power of the Underbase.

See & Read Video
He went on a lot of suicide missions.

Generation 2 manga
(While in the US continuity, G2 Jetfire was the same character as G1 Jetfire/Skyfire, the same would not appear to be the case in Japan. In Japan, the G1 character was called "Skyfire" in the cartoon, which was the only Japanese media he appeared in, as his toy was never released in Japan. The "Jetfire" that appears in the G2 manga probably would have originally been a different character, though Robot Masters backstory seemed to consolidate the two retroactively.)

At one point, Megatron kidnapped the Autobot Laser Rod, Electro. While Megatron attempted to persuade Electro into joining the Decepticons, Jetfire infiltrated the headquarters. Busting-in at full-force, Jetfire took the Decepticons by surprise and managed to successfully rescue his fellow Autobot.

Before the war, the scientist Jetfire and Starscream were friends. But when Starscream joined the Decepticons in their assault on outlying city-states, Jetfire was torn. If he followed his beliefs and upheld justice and life, he would end up facing his dearest friend on the battlefield. Jetfire did end up with the Autobots, but not before a barrior of distrust had been built between them due to his inaction and his past loyalties.

The War Within: The Dark AgesThese loyalties came to a head during a period when Optimus Prime and Megatron were presumed lost forever, the two factions splintered into five. Events conspired behind the scenes, building up to an unknown crescendo, and Jetfire was suspicious. Putting his already-shakey trustworthiness on the line, he met up with Shockwave in secret to discuss the looming front of darkness. However, the source of these machinations, the Fallen, had leaked their correspondence to Grimlock, who held a grudge against the scientist.

Grimlock assaulted Jetfire at his intended meeting place, but both were overwhelmed by the Fallen and dragged far inside Cybertron and strapped to a four-paneled contraption in the Well of All Sparks. Jetfire, Grimlock, Hot Spot, and Blitzwing were the "Angles of Dissolution," four "unique sparks" which could catalyze the breach of the Seal of Primus. Combined forces from several factions penetrated the Fallen's operation, but despite Jetfire and Grimlock's teamwork, the Fallen was destroyed only by his own scheme -- the hand of Primus reached out, awaken, from his slumber, and smote the enigmatic being to pieces. Jetfire, a skeptic towards things supernatural, began to wonder if there might be something bigger than them going on, something no one could comprehend.

Generation 1 (Dreamwave comic)Long after, Jetfire and Omega Supreme were sent out into space to search for the missing Ark. When they arrived on Earth, though, they were attacked by Scourge. Jetfire disabled him with their ship's EMP, but when he went outside to identify his assailant he was caught in an avalanche and buried in ice.

Millions of years later he was found by Starscream and stored aboard the Nemesis, still encased in a block of ice. When the zealot Sunstorm arrived on Earth, Starscream freed Jetfire from his icy prison to stop him. An uneasy alliance between Jetfire, Starscream, and Bumblebee's team of Autobots as they tried to come up with a plan to stop the unbelievably powerful Seeker, but Sunstorm was unstoppable. Jetfire started to consider that Sunstorm may be supernatural, despite his natural skepticism. During their encounter, Jetfire realized that Sunstorm's internal fusion reactor was about to go critical, and flew him up into space where he could explode without risk to the Earth. Jetfire was seemingly annihilated in the explosion. His demise caused Bumblebee to throw down his arms and quit the war.

(It was revealed long after the demise of Dreamwave that an issue was planned that involved the return of both Jetfire and the Fallen, meaning his "death" would not have been final.)
IDW comics continuity
Years of war had put the Transformers' home world of Cybertron through too much punishment, meaning a spiral into planet-wide cataclysm, a consequence the scientist Thunderwing had foreseen. Jetfire and other Transformers scientists ignored his warning, until it was too late.

Stormbringer (comics)Seven hundred years later, and against regulations, Jetfire and the Technobots travelled to the supposedly-abandoned husk of Cybertron from their science vessel, the Calabi-Yau, to investigate a strange energy reading. Upon arriving on the dead surface of the planet near Thunderhead Pass, Jetfire, Scattershot, Afterburner, and Lightspeed were ambushed by a mysterious group of robots with stealth abilies. The Technobots were badly damaged and Jetfire was captured. When he revived, he found his captors worshipping the reanimated corpse of Thunderwing.

Their leader, Bludgeon, wished to revisit the mad scientist's plot and harness the power that accelerated the planet's death in a apocalyptic torrent all those years ago. Jetfire pleaded with Bludgeon not to again unleash the powers that destroyed his planet, but he was ignored, and his attempts to escape were thwarted. Thanks to a distress signal sent by the remaining Technobots in the Calabi-Yau, Optimus Prime and the Wreckers soon arrived, released Jetfire, and defeated his captors, just before an alert system announced the arrival of Thunderwing, newly reborn...
Jetfire was able to figure out that the ultra energon powering thunderwing would deplete in a prolonged struggle. This allowed Optimus Prime, the wreckers, and the mayhem attack squad to stop the monstrosity without destroying cybertron.

:A Takatoku VF-1S Super Valkyrie box set was repainted, repackaged, and released with an Autobot symbol (and some minor retooling of the nose cone) and named Jetfire.

:Jetfire features three modes - robot, jet, and an "alternate transformation" that deploys his arms and legs in jet mode. Additionally, Jetfire comes with several red pieces of armor that can snap onto his arms, legs, and back in any mode.

:Naturally, Jetfire was not released in Japan, since the toy (or at least, a dozen variations of it) was released by one of Takara's rival toy companies.

(Note: The shoulder assembly where the jet mode folds in half for robot mode is one of the more commonly-broken parts in the early Transformers toy line. The more rigid plastic used on the armor pieces also means that it's not uncommon for their attachment clips to have snapped off. And finally, the small black clip-piece that attaches Jetfire's rifle to his jet mode is possibly one of the most commonly-missing accessories on secondhand Jetfires, if not secondhand Transformers all around.)
:Jetfire was released in Generation 2 as one of the Autobot Cyberjets, a redeco of the Decepticon Hooligan. Interestingly enough, his toy has Decepticon faction symbol stickers, despite being released as an Autobot.
:Jetfire is based on Don Figueroa's design as seen in Dreamwave's The War Within miniseries, which in turn was based on Figueroa's scratch-build custom Transformer, Strikefire. He transforms into a Cybertronic fighter plane with armor add-ons.

:Like all Titanium Series figures, Jetfire's toy is constructed of both die-cast metal and molded plastic, and it comes with a plastic display stand featuring his name and his faction logo. In jet mode, landing gear can be deployed from underneath the fuselage and both legs. In robot mode, the two wing cannons can be removed to be held by the robot either separately or combined together into a single weapon.
It not only features removeable armor like the original toy, but the toy-inspired head can be removed like a helmet to reveal a cartoon/comic-inspired head. The toy's add-on booster packs have flip-out reveal cannons, and it also features arm-mounted spring-loaded missile launchers.
Why "Skyfire"?
We may never be certain of the exact circumstances behind the change from Jetfire to Skyfire. There are, however, a few known factors, and a lot of theories.

* Not all of Hasbro's Transformers product originated with Takara. The Macross Super Valkyrie, the toy that would become Jetfire, came from a company called Takatoku (who were also responsible for the toys that became Roadbuster, Whirl, and the deluxe Insecticons). Why did Hasbro market non-Takara product? Bob Prupis, one of the original members of the Transformers marketing team, would frequently go to Toy Fairs in Asia, where "any product that really looked good that was exciting we didn't care where it came from. We did some work with Bandai, who had been working with other people, and took a few products that looked right for our line". The Super Valkyrie, then, must have met their criteria for inclusion.

* As a larger toy, it would follow that Hasbro would want to sell Jetfire by including him in the Transformers animated series. However, even though Hasbro had the rights to release Takatoku's Super Valkyrie in the US Transformers toyline, Hasbro's chief collaborator on Transformers was still Takara. It may have been that Takara always had plans to air the Transformer animated series in their own market (as it featured a majority of their products), and objected to the inclusion of a competitor's product on the show. This may also be why no other Takatoku-designed toys appeared in the series, although their relatively smaller sizes as compared to Jetfire may have been a factor in Hasbro not including them.

* As the theory goes, the Jetfire animation model was adjusted to look less like the toy as a compromise to Takara. However - perhaps because it now failed to look like the product it was supposed to be advertising - the character became "Skyfire".

* Conversely, it is possible that licensing issues played in to the decisions to change Jetfire to Skyfire; the story bible for G1 writers mentions how Jetfire had been "transformed" into Skyfire for "legal reasons". See also Trivia.

* The evidence of Robotech influencing Jetfire-related decisions is murky. That show began airing in syndication in March of 1985, whereas "Fire In The Sky", the first episode with Skyfire, aired December 8th, 1984 - and would have had to have been written and animated much before then. Statements indicate that it took nine months to edit Robotech together, placing the start of production somewhere around July of 1984. So... who knows. All that's certain is that Hasbro licensing the Super Valkyrie seemingly did prevent the use of that toy in Matchbox's Robotech toyline.

Beyond Prupis's statement and the notes in the story bible, however, nothing supporting (or denying) any of the previous statements have come out.

Trivia
* The story bible for the original animated series contains a different character model for Jetfire, one clearly based on the actual toy. This model did appear twice "fictionally," once as a partially-obscured background character in the second Marvel Comics issue, and again in the animated portion of the commercial for Jetfire and Shockwave. It would also occasionally crop up in secondary media, such as coloring books.

* In fact, the Transformers story bible offers seemingly contradictory statements on Jetfire/Skyfire. An early page notes how "JETFIRE has been "transformed" into SKYFIRE -- with a different model -- due to legal reasons. Do not use this character unless necessary" , whereas a subsequent page on new Season 2 characters notes that "Although Reflector should no longer be used as a character in the series, JETFIRE will be redesigned and reintroduced in the near future". As the Valkyrie-derived animation model never appeared in the cartoon, and Skyfire was never redesigned, it's uncertain just what these notes refer to.

*It's believed that there were some trademark issues with the name "Optimus Prime" in the Netherlands due to a manufacturer of kitchen utensils named "Optimus". Whether or not this was actually the case, Milton Bradley did not initially release Optimus Prime's toy, referred to Jetfire as the Autobot leader, and called Optimus "Jetfire" in the Dutch translation of the Marvel comic! Whatever the problem was, it was later rectified, as the Optimus Prime toy was later released and they stopped calling him "Jetfire" in the comic.

* The Energon Omnicon Skyblast was created as an homage to Skyfire. He would have been given the name "Skyfire" as well, but the trademark had been secured (and Registered) by Hasbro rival Mattel. Also on the homage front, Robot Masters R Blade features a very Jetfirey deco.
Moon was a transforming bunny from the Beast Wars II portion of the Generation 1 continuity.

Moon is a relic from the past of the planet Gaia. While a transforming bunny rabbit, he is not of Cybertronian origin. He is stationed on the moon orbiting the planet along with his partner, Artemis. Together, they watch the battle unfold between the Maximals and the Predacons, gathering data in secret. He also ends every sentence with the word "moon".

Moon's special ability is the power to become invisible.
Voice actor: Junko Takeuchi (Japan)

Moon, along with Artemis, watched over the Beast Wars on planet Gaia, gathering information on the events and organizing the data. At first they made a stern effort not to interact with the Transformers on Gaia, until Galvatron summoned the battleship Nemesis, which threatened the entire planet.

Choosing to side with the Maximals, Moon and Artemis aided the good guys in reaching the Nemesis from Gaia and were instrumental in the final battle.

After the defeat of Unicron, both Moon and Artemis were invited to stay on Cybertron and helped rebuild the war-torn planet.
* A pocket-sized Japanese guide book to Beast Wars II contained an early concept drawing of Moon. Instead of being a rabbit, he was a bizarre-looking, vaguely lemur-like creature with huge ears and a pierced tail.
* Since Moon hails from Gaia's past and Gaia is a future version of Earth it seems likely that he was of human construction.
