Daniel and Wheelie's first team-up! Run!

Detailed synopsis
Spike and the Autobots throw a surprise party for Daniel, but it is interrupted by an attack from the Combaticons. Wheelie gets caught in the crossfire and Ultra Magnus throws himself over the boy Autobot to save him from being shot. After hitting the shuttle bay and destroying several ships, the Combaticons retreat. The attack was a coordinated effort by Galvatron to disrupt a peace conference to be hosted on Cybertron the next day.

Daniel and Wheelie want to throw Ultra Magnus a surprise party, but no one knows the date of his creation and it isn’t on file in the Hall of Records. An annoying and clumsy records robot tells them that the information must be stored on the lost Autobot storage asteroid. Daniel and Wheelie steal a garbage ship and head out to find the asteroid and the info. Unbeknownst to them, their movements are being watched by Cyclonus, who evidently doesn’t have anything better to do than spy on garbage ships. Galvatron orders his troops to follow it.

Stuck in a meteor shower, Daniel and Wheelie crash on an asteroid that – surprise! – happens to be the asteroid they were looking for. While they are exploring they are attacked by scaly flying eels and take refuge in a cave, which turns out to be the opening to the records. Inside, robot drones attack them for asking for the wrong file name. To make matters worse, the eels have found their way inside and attach themselves to Wheelie. Just as they are about to be shot by the drones and eaten by the eels, both menaces are destroyed by Cyclonus and the Sweeps, who take the pair hostage and interrogate them.

Cyclonus reprograms the asteroid into a collision course for Cybertron and then sends Spike a message that he’s holding Daniel hostage. The Autobots have two choices: destroy the asteroid and kill Daniel, or let the asteroid hit the planet and kill all the peace delegates.

Ultra Magnus takes Sky Lynx to the asteroid. The Sweeps attack, but Magnus makes short work of them, then heads after Cyclonus. They pound on each other as Wheelie sneaks by and presses the convenient self-destruct button. Cyclonus runs off and the Autobots and Daniel escape in Sky Lynx as the asteroid blows up.

Safe on Cybertron, Daniel explains how they got into this mess, looking for Ultra Magnus’ birthday. Spike declares today as Ultra Magnus’ birthday and everyone cheers.

:Jessica Morgan is a human in the cartoon portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

Jessica Morgan is a scientist in the far flung future of 2007. While Earth still suffers the threats of the war between the Transformers, Jessica is well aware of the difference between the Autobots and the Decepticons.

The men in her life don't have a clue about the difference. They also tend to be jerks.

Fiction
Generation 1 cartoon
While testing the new heat resistant metal she and her colleague/boyfriend Gregory Swofford had developed, their ship came across the ship that was carrying lifeless body of Optimus Prime. Gregory was willing to leave it to be destroyed in the impending supernova, as he had been scarred during a fight between Prime and Megatron. Jessica, however, decided to retrieve it, and convinced Gregory to do the same. After loading the body, the sun went nova. The metal on their ship succeeded in protecting it from the heat and radiation, but it coated the ship with a strange spore. Returning to Earth, Jessica and Gregory met with Jessica's father, Mark, who had helped them develop the metal, discovering that the spore that coated the ship induced rage. However, the Terrorcons attacked, trying to retrieve the metal for Galvatron. The Technobots arrived to stop them, and Jessica was injured in the battle, paralyzing her. Enraged, Mark and Gregory decided to play god and bring Optimus Prime back to life in an attempt to infect the Transformers with the spores. First Aid developed an exosuit to help Jessica walk, but Mark and Greggory forced her to lead the Autobots into a trap. Jessica warned Rodimus Prime and Ultra Magnus of the trap, but the Autobot commander ran headlong into it. Unfortunately, the plan worked, and Transformers were infected with the Hate Plague...as were others all over the world. The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 1

After Optimus Prime was revived by a Quintesson, the Autobot leader found himself at a lost without the Matrix of Leadership. Jessica recommended that he coat himself with the heat resistant metal she and Swofford developed, as it would allow him to remove the Matrix from the infected Rodimus without being infected himself. Though she was asked to remain in Autobot City, Jessica convinced the Autobots to take her with them to Chaar to retrieve the metal with Galvatron's help. One by one, they were whittled down until all that remained were Prime, Jessica, Galvatron, and Sky Lynx. Upon seeing the metal, Jessica declared that there was enough to coat Optimus with it...which Galvatron heard. Jessica jumped in Galvatron's line of fire, distracting the Decepticon leader enough for Prime and Sky Lynx to disarm him. Unfortunately, Cyclonus arrived and infected both Galvatron and Jessica. However, Jessica's idea worked: with the heat resistant metal, Optimus Prime recovered the Matrix and used it to cure the universe. Upon regaining her senses, Jessica was present for the apology that her father and Gregory gave to Optimus Prime. The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 2
*Japanese title: "Stop the Transform!"

Detailed synopsis
While watching a car race, Spike and Chip comment on how cool it would be to see the Autobots perform in a race as well.

Meanwhile, in an old west ghost town, the Constructicons have completed the Transfixatron, a new device that will lock a Transformer in the mode they currently occupy (usually vehicle mode). Laserbeak arrives, informing the Decepticons about the Autobot race. Starscream complains that Megatron is wasting time with the device instead of leading an attack. In response, Megatron tests the device on his whiny subordinate, and it's a success. Starscream is stuck in jet mode and begs to be released, saying he'll do whatever Megatron wants and he's too valuable to the Decepticon cause. Megatron gets bored of Starscream's pleas and frees him. Satisfied with the test, Megatron orders the Constructicons to start working on a second device whose purpose will be revealed later.

Chip and Spike suggest their race idea to the Autobots, and Optimus Prime agrees, as long as it's for charity. Huffer complains that it's a waste of time and a bad idea (as usual), but the Autobots decide to do it. Huffer, Brawn, Ratchet, and Wheeljack remain to guard the base.

The Autobots arrive at the track and wait at the starting line in robot mode before they compete "in the greatest automobile race in history." Some numbskull in the audience wonders aloud where their cars are. The Autobots transform, and the race is on with a whole lot of trash talk. Jazz, Sunstreaker and Mirage rush ahead of the slower vehicles like Trailbreaker and Ironhide.

During the race, Skywarp teleports to a position over the track and uses the Transfixatron on the Autobots, who don't notice. The Autobots near the finish line, but they're kicking up so much dust its impossible to tell who won. "The real winners are us, folks!" says the announcer.

Next up, the Autobots line up to do some stunts and make "Evel Knievel look like a kiddie car driver," according to Spike. But Sunstreaker's attempt to jump the other Autobots falls short and he has to be saved by Windcharger's magnetic powers.

Before they can do anything else, the Decepticons arrive. The Autobots attempt to transform, only to find that they are all stuck in vehicle mode. Optimus orders the Autobots to ram the Decepticons, but they simply shoot out the Autobots' tires, fire rays to make their engines overheat and disable their radios. Helpless, the Autobots are herded away by the 'Cons.

Bumblebee takes Spike and Chip back to the base, hoping Ratchet and Wheeljack can figure a fix for the Transfixatron ray. As usual, Huffer complains, but a massive bearhug from Brawn gets him to shut up, while Ratchet and Wheeljack get to work.

At the ghost town, Megatron forces Optimus Prime to watch his soldiers die one by one in the Constructicons' second device, a horrific crushing machine, starting with Ironhide. The Autobot leader dispatches Roller to distract Megatron, allowing Prime to ram the crusher, which frees Ironhide. Hound manages to send a signal to Teletraan I, just as Ratchet and Wheeljack finish working on a device which will allow the Autobots to transform...a grenade. (Real good thinking there, guys.)

Spike and the other Autobots arrive to save their comrades, but Soundwave dispatches Ravage and Rumble to deal with them. After a game of keep-away with the grenade, Chip manages to get it close enough to release its energy, allowing the Autobots to transform to robot mode. The Constructicons form Devastator, but Cliffjumper and Wheeljack fire the Transfixatron at giant Decepticon, causing the Combiner to separate. The Decepticons retreat, and the Autobots destroy the Transfixatron.
Detailed synopsis
While patrolling a refinery, Trailbreaker and Brawn spot Thundercracker and Starscream stealing steel. The Decepticons get away with the loot by collapsing the refinery behind them. The Autobots report back to Optimus Prime, who is puzzled about the Decepticons’ motives. The Autobots launch a Sky Spy to hone in on any Decepticon activity, and the satellite picks up strange energy readings in the Peruvian Andes.

There, the Decepticons have followed an Incan legend to an ancient temple that rests on a shaft leading deep into the Earth’s core, capped by the Crystal of Power. With the metal acquired by Starscream, the Decepticons have fashioned a weapon frame to accommodate the crystal. Laserbeak spots the Sky Spy, and Megatron tests the weapon by blowing the satellite out of the sky. The metal, however, proves inadequate and melts with exposure to the raw energy unleashed from the Earth’s core. Starscream tries to shift blame to Thundercracker for the faulty metal, but Megatron blames them both and has them stay behind at the temple while he soars to a nearby mining town to find replacement metal.

The nearby Peruvian mining town is abuzz with the sudden show of power from the ancient temple. A reactionary elder proclaims that long-forgotten gods have come back to punish them, but her more level-headed granddaughter, Luisa, realizes that someone must have uncovered the fabled Crystal of Power.

In the Arctic, Sideswipe and Wheeljack are jackhammering through the ice to resurrect the fallen warrior Skyfire. The massive jet emerges from the ice and transforms into robot mode. Wheeljack immediately assigns him to fly back to Autobot headquarters to pick up Brawn and Windcharger before heading down to the Andes mountains.

In short order, Skyfire is in the Andes, closing in on the Decepticons. Windcharger and Brawn skydive from the jet, tangling with Soundwave and Reflector while Skyfire goes to investigate the strange energy readings from the Incan temple. While the smaller Autobots are able to hold their own against Megatron’s lieutenants, the Decepticon leader proves too powerful for them and they scatter. Windcharger desperately calls for Skyfire to return while Brawn bites off more than he can chew in the form of an angered Megatron.

Skyfire zooms in to the rescue and gracefully airlifts Brawn and Windcharger from the thick of Decepticon danger. Skyfire quickly returns to the Ark to pick up some reinforcements and streaks back to Peru. He deposits the Autobots near the mining town to take care of Megatron while he goes to investigate the Incan temple.

The Autobots stop Megatron, Reflector and Soundwave mid-raid, with Brawn having the ball-bearings enough to swipe Megatron’s arm cannon and blast the Decepticon leader with his own weapon! Laserbeak steals back the weapon and Megatron swears vengeance. He has gathered a metal strong enough for the Crystal, and requests that Skywarp come to retrieve it, adding further insult to Thundercracker and Starscream who are left guarding the temple.

A stray blast during the battle nearly drops an electrical tower on top of Luisa, but she is saved by Spike and Bumblebee. Luisa quickly explains that these “evil creatures” have stolen the Crystal of Power. She leads Bumblebee and Spike to a secret entrance in the temple. Soundwave detects their presence, and dispatches Ravage to follow them.

Meanwhile, Thundercracker spots Skyfire skulking about the temple. The Decepticon warrior is torn; if he blasts Skyfire, Starscream is likely to take all the credit. Conversely, if he lets Skyfire destroy the Crystal-based weapon, perhaps Starscream can take the blame. Starscream overhears Thundercracker plotting, and blasts Skyfire. He then blackmails Thundercracker to do his bidding, lest Starscream reveal to their leader just how uncertain Thundercracker’s loyalties can be.

The Decepticons load up their stolen steel with Skywarp’s help and depart. To cover their exit, Megatron blasts a nearby mountain, creating a deadly rockfall that threatens the mining town.

The Autobots use their firepower to reduce the falling boulders to pebbles, saving the village. Meanwhile, Megatron returns to the temple, where he successfully tests a new weapon frame that can handle the power of the crystal. Bumblebee, Spike and Luisa surreptitiously arrive in the temple, spotting the inert form of Skyfire. Spike starts repairing the fallen warrior, just as Ravage pounces. Bumblebee tries holding off the Decepticon jaguar while Spike works as fast as he can.

The rest of the Autobots arrive at the temple, but Megatron pins them down with devastating firepower from his weapon frame cannon. The Autobots are able to outflank Megatron, and the tide of battle is turned by Skyfire, freshly repaired by Spike. Skyfire strafes the weapons frame, destroying it and unleashing the power of the mountain. The Decepticons retreat, and Thundercracker takes fleeting pleasure in seeing Megatron and Starscream fail.

That night, Wheeljack caps the fire stream with a new invention that can contain the power that the crystal formerly held in check. The Autobots celebrate their victory while Bumblebee and Spike drive Luisa back to the mining town, where she promises to introduce Bumblebee to her brother’s convertible, Juanita.
Other notes
Animation and/or technical glitches
* At the start of the episode, when Brawn confronts Starscream and Thundercracker, the Decepticons' colours are switched.
* When Skyfire strafes the crystal-powered weapon, he momentarily has Skywarp's colors.

* The Rhino DVD version of this episode uses a number of erroneous takes as the basis of its remastered animation. As a result, the DVD introduces several coloring errors that were not present in the broadcast version. For example, Trailbreaker is colored a solid red (like Ironhide and Sideswipe) in his introductory shot. When Skywarp mocks Starscream for having to guard the Crystal, he is colored like Thundercracker. When Starscream and Thundercracker carry Skyfire’s inert form, the Autobot jet has Skywarp’s colors, and as Megatron addresses Starscream, the latter has Thundercracker's colors. The broadcast version has correct colors for all these shots. (See illustration)
* When Megatron follows Starscream and Thundercracker out of the pyramid after leaving Skyfire in, his Decepticon emblem disappears for a moment.
*In the battlefield scene between Soundwave and Reflector versus the other Autobots, the Autobot lasers are coloured purple.
*When Skyfire swoops over Soundwave and Reflector and destroys their stone bunkers, both the lasers hitting their targets and the explosions are missing, so it appears the walls just fall apart.
*When Skyfire is about to destroy the cannon, it already apears to be melted to slag.

Continuity Errors
* The Incans apparently built temples with steps large enough for Transformers to use.
* Skyfire was left for dead and mourned in his previous, debut appearance in "Fire in the Sky". Why do the Autobots return to his resting spot to dig him up out of the ice for a quick ride?
* In order to do the above, the Autobots drive from the United States to the North Pole to dig up Skyfire so he can fly them down to South America. Think about that for a minute.
* Luisa evidently can teleport.
* If the Autobots can fly, why does Brawn need rescuing when he's running from Megatron? Why doesn't he just fly away?

Transformers References
* This episode references "Fire in the Sky", the previous (and first) episode that Skyfire appeared in.
* This is the only episode to play on Thundercracker's uncertain loyalties, a trait called out in his original bio. It's also one of the few episodes in which he displays his sonic powers, and even then, only when Starscream whines about the "awful thunder noise" he's making as they fly away. His sonic powers are also mentioned in Heavy Metal War, where Megatron uses them after gathering all the Decepticons' powers.

Real-World References
* The Transformers visit Peru, an ancient Incan temple, and a mining village where everyone speaks heavily accented English.
* The title of this episode may be a reference to the Grateful Dead song of the same name.

Miscellaneous trivia
* Starscream is depicted having a dozen rockets within hidden chest compartments. Despite only appearing in this episode, the feature was immortalized in toy form for Starscream's Robot Masters incarnation through clip-on accessories, and again as part of his Masterpiece figure, this time actually incorporated into the figure.
* Megatron can apparently pick off the Sky Spy from the temple to the atmosphere but can't shoot Optimus Prime with his weapon from 30 feet in front of him.
