Optimus Prime's search for answers about his predecessors leads to a dark discovery.

Synopsis
In the wake of his brush with death at Megatron's hands, Prime is pensive. To find out more about the sinister presence he felt while transferring his Spark through infraspace, he takes Ark-32 and journeys to the Muta-Gaath Nebula—secret home of Omega Supreme. Unfortunately, another ship observes his transit, its inhabitants vowing to destroy whoever is inside the asteroid base that Omega calls home.

Prime quizzes Omega about Nova Prime. He believes that he encountered Nova while in infraspace, and was filled with a sense of dread, something only Megatron and Thunderwing normally cause. Omega explains that Nova Prime felt that Cybertronians were superior to other life forms and had a duty to impress their likeness on the rest of the universe. Optimus surmises that the Ark was not an exploratory vessel, but part of Nova's expansion, something Omega also suspected.

But before they can further pursue the matter, Monstructor smashes his way in to Omega's domain. The enraged combiner robot has come for Omega Supreme; Monstructor makes short work of him, ripping off his cannon arm within seconds and nearly crushing him with a shuttlecraft. Prime's weapons are repelled by an energy-dampening field, so Prime blasts open an airlock, sucking all three of them into space.

Omega uses his rocket-engine arm to transport himself and Prime as far away as he can, but they both know Monstructor is hot on their heels. Prime demands answers, and Omega explains that Monstructor was an attempt by Jhiaxus, at Nova Prime's behest, to combine minds and bodies of a group of Transformers to enhance strength and intellect. But the process failed, and the combined form "devolved into a monster". After Jhiaxus and Nova Prime disappeared aboard the original Ark, Omega locked Monstructor away in a dimensionally-displaced prison, an act which Prime finds reprehensible.

Further debate is ended as Monstructor's ship arrives, and the monster dives at them. Omega tells Prime that Monstructor has one weak spot, an area of his chest; unable to reason with the giant, Prime strikes the area, and Monstructor breaks apart into his components. Prime swears to the fallen robots that he will help them.

An Autobot cleanup crew arrives later, to restore Omega Supreme and take the Monstructor team prisoner. Omega warns Prime that if the gestalt technology falls into Megatron's hands, the result will be an all-consuming war. Jetfire takes the combiner robots away, leaving Optimus to reflect on the tarnished legacy of the Prime lineage.
* A strange conversation occurs among the Monstructor bots:

Panel 1:
:Unknown: Is it him?

Panel 2:
:Birdbrain: Only one sure way to find out.
:Bristleback: Which is?
:Birdbrain: Smash our way in...

Panel 3:
:Bristleback: ...and kill whoever and whatever we find inside!

It's possible that Bristleback did indeed chime in with his two cents' worth (particularly given the intertwined nature of this team), but considering IDW's history of misattributed speech balloons, it also seems likely that Birdbrain and Bristleback's speech balloons got switched in the second panel. Whatever the case, the conversation was not altered for the trade paperback version.

Items of note
* The issue includes 2 pages of sketches by Don Figueroa—one of Optimus Prime in several stages of transformation (though it's the transformation design of Masterpiece/Dreamwave Optimus, not the IDW one), and the other of the various alternate modes of Sentinel Prime and Nova Prime.
* Among the Autobots reporting in to Prime at the issue's opening are:
:* Springer (presumably the one reporting on Kup's status)
:* Ultra Magnus (with a new lead on Scorponok—possibly implying that he cut another deal with Swindle)
:* Wheelie, making his first appearance in the IDWverse, wondering if anyone can hear him. The reason for his transmission would be shown almost a year later in his own Spotlight.
:* Hound reporting Sideswipe's desire to follow up on Sunstreaker's disappearance.
* A similar scene starts off Escalation #1.
* This issue establishes that the various combiner teams shown to date in the IDW universe (Technobots, Constructicons, Predacons, the odd Protectobot and Combaticon) aren't actually combiners yet.
* Colorist Josh Burcham made the vents on the butt of Optimus Prime's Ion blaster a sort of ammo gauge, based upon an idea from fandom. After each subsequent blast, the blue glow dips lower.
* Also, the Pretender Monsters are not Pretenders nor Decepticons, as they were locked away before the Pretender process and factions were developed. Stormbringer (comics) See IDW timeline.
* This issue further establishes that the Pretender Monsters are AWESOME and that Monstructor is a total bad-ass death machine. But we already knew that.
* This issue was reissued in December 2008 as a special 3-D edition, including a pair of cardboard unfoldable 3-D glasses.
The former miner-turned-gladiator-turned-rebel leader kills lots of other guys for the hell of it.

Synopsis
Autobot security escorts Starscream away from the other detained gladiators held in the Kaon holding cells. They take Starscream to stand before the Council of the district, to whom Starscream delivers a message: Everything that has happened is the council's fault. As punishment for their sins, Starscream and Soundwave destroy the council, etching their symbol into the meeting room's view screen.

The next stage in Megatron's master plan carried out by Starscream is to free all the inmates. Starscream releases them all, and the criminals with prior association with Megatron are recruited into his new army. Soundwave provides armaments, and Starscream introduces Megatron to a new arm-mounted fusion cannon. Blasting a hole in the wall with his new weapon, Megatron orders the group to attack with an offensive that is as simple as it is destructive: Everything burns.

In an area inhabited by Cybertron's high class, snooty recreation comes to an end when Skywarp and Thundercracker fire upon an airborne vessel, causing it to crash below, destroying an incredible amount on the way down.

Soundwave meets with his boss, Senator Ratbat. The senator admits that not only did he aid Megatron's cause by supplying arms, he was also the one who arranged for Megatron to be removed from the mining operation where he was originally working. Now that Megatron's forces have destabilized the area, the senator is embezzling what he can before moving on to new pastures. Soundwave, however, shoots Ratbat, takes Ratbat's ill-gotten gains, and seals his spark inside of a frame — his new "cassette" body. Evidently, Soundwave prefers Megatron as his new boss.

Sentinel Prime and the other Autobots fight to retake Kaon from the rioting rebellion. However, the rebels are causing massive damage, have jammed communications with Iacon, and just won't give an inch of ground. Running out of options, Sentinel Prime decides to bring his incredible assortment of firepower (using his Apex System) head to head against Megatron. A colossal explosion blasts Megatron out of sight.

Sentinel Prime radios to the other Autobots that he's created a route that can be used to fight against the enemy. But when his armor's helmet is shattered by Hound's body, he discovers that Megatron still functions. Their struggle takes them over a precipice as they battle while discussing Megatron's goal: Megatron wants to transform the world. With a final strike, Megatron (possibly) kills the Prime.

The other Autobots arrive, following Sentinel Prime. They find their leader's body. Prowl, assuming command, orders a retreat.

Megatron sits on his throne and discusses the victory with Soundwave. Now that Kaon has been taken, the next step is clear — the rest of Cybertron shall be conquered. But they will not do it as Cybertronians. From this day forward, they are the Decepticons.

The Great War has begun...
Errors
* On page 10, Trailbreaker is depicted grabbing Starscream as the Decepticon makes his escape. Starscream then kicks the Autobot off, sending him into what is heavily implied to be his death (what with the long fall into a massive explosion and all), despite Trailbreaker turning up alive and well many years later in the previously published Spotlight: Kup as well as the later published Spotlight: Blaster. * It also wouldn't be the last time a Spotlight issue has a conflicting plot point, as despite appearances here, Hound shows up fine in Spotlight: Galvatron.
* Straxus shows up as one of the Senate guards... when really he shouldn't be there at all.
* The string of word bubbles meant for Ratbat on page 12 instead appear to come from Ravage.

Items of note
* Civilians cry out "Primus!" when they are attacked by Thundercracker and Skywarp. His name is only used as a curse here, but it is the first time their creator's name is mentioned in this continuity in which writer Simon Furman has claimed Primus and Unicron will never take part. Furman claimed that this "doesn’t necessarily mean it’s G1 Primus", and that there was someone or something else called Primus that they were referring to.
* According to Alex Milne, Sentinel Prime isn't actually dead, and the script called for him to look like he could go either way. But he is drawn with a gaping hole in his chest and an expression of horror frozen on his face, and his colors are extremely washed-out. The dialogue leaves the question "He alive?" spoken but unanswered.
Although the fusion cannon is Megatron's more notable weapon, the leader of the Decepticons has many others. Among the more infamous weapons of his is the Energon mace.

Strangely, he only seems to use it when he is fighting Optimus Prime on a particular dam.
Generation 1 cartoon
When Megatron led the Decepticons on a raid of Sherman Dam, Megatron and Optimus Prime battled on the top of the dam. As the Autobot leader brought out his energon-axe, Megatron revealed his energon mace. After some obligatory trash talking, Megatron and Prime proceeded to thrash each other. However, Megatron only won when Prime's attention was turned to Spike Witwicky calling for help, allowing Megatron to knock Prime off the dam, and fly away with the Decepticons. More than Meets the Eye, Part 2
Full Throttle Scramble Power!
After having his latest weapon, the Omega Whip, destroyed by a mind-controlled Starscream, Megatron found his means of escape blockaded by his nemesis, Optimus Prime. Megatron swiftly unleashed his energon mace, tangling his foe in its powerful chain. Megatron's upper hand in combat did not last long, as Optimus was soon rescued from the confrontation when Metroplex arrived on the scene and scared all the Decepticons away, including Megatron. Full Throttle Scramble Power!
Eons ago, when Optimus Prime and Megatron were fighting in the bowels of Cybertron, Megatron breached the casing on the Matrix, causing the two Transformers to see visions of the future. Among them were Prime and Megatron fighting with their respective Energon weapons on Earth. The War Within issue 5
G.I. Joe vs. the Transformers
As the Joes dared to attack Megatron, he lost patience and attempted to squash the puny fleshlings with his mighty mace. Sadly, a satellite laser removed said mace, and a decent portion of the arm it was attached to. G.I. Joe vs. the Transformers issue 6
Prompted by Senator Ratbat, Soundwave offered several weapons to Megatron, including the Energon mace. Megatron Origin issue 2 When Megatron later lost an arm in gladiatorial combat, his new arm featured the mace. Megatron Origin issue 3
Rartorata is easily the most vicious of the Blendtron trio, ready to sacrifice anything, even his team-mates Elephorca and Drancron, to accomplish his mission.
In the wake of Unicron's last attempt at eating Cybertron, the hidden cells of cultists continued to operate in secret. As the dead god's consciousness called out to his scattered followers, Larrylatta was chosen to be reformatted into a Blendtron. As his Anti-Matrix filled, he would be transfigured and Cybertron would be remade in his image. The Ascending issue 1 However, they were in secret agents of Unicron, seeking only to use Shokaract as a "vessel" for the resurrection of their true patron.
Pressing down on a plate on the back of his head in either mode tilts it forward and deploys spring-loaded spines on his skull. ==Notes==
* Many attempts were made to romanize the character's nonsense name until finally, in 2007, the IDW Beast Wars comics set down a canonical English name for the little fella. Which still doesn't make any goddamn sense. It's like the whole Deathsaurus thing all over again, only there wasn't an option that looked like it meant something. You'd think they could have just called him "Dave" or something.

* One vaguely likely explanation for the name of this guy is that the scientific name for a species of lionfish is Pterois lunulata, and even that's a bit of a stretch. Considering 'L' is pronounced like an 'R' in Japanese, this seems the most likely explanation... well, the only explanation.
