Wing Dagger served the Autobots as a security guard on Cybertron; he was the jailer in charge of the Decepticon criminal [[Shockblast (Energon)|Shockblast]]. During a Decepticon uprising, Shockblast escaped his prison. {{storylink|Alpha Q: Identity}} Wing Dagger and his friend [[Padlock]] pursued him, but Shockblast ended up killing Padlock. Wing Dagger grieved for his friend and swore revenge on Shockblast. {{storylink|Shockblast: Rampage}}

During a Decepticon assault on Cybertron, Wing Dagger lassoed Shockblast with energy bands, but the powerful Decepticon simply pulled him up into the air. As they wove through the sky among the [[energon tower (building)|energon towers]], the Decepticon blasted one of the towers, causing it to crash down upon Wing Dagger and Tidal Wave. Tidal Wave survived with damage, but Wing Dagger died. {{storylink|Each One Fights...}}

Wing Dagger's inert form was taken to [[Primus]]. {{storylink|Unicron Unleashed}} With the aid of [[Rad White|Rad]], Primus restored the warrior, imbuing him with a [[Spark of Combination]]. {{storylink|Open Fire!}} Reformatted into Wing Saber, he joined Optimus's team not only to find energon, but to avenge the death of his friend.

Wing Saber, having been reformatted and re-powered by Primus himself, understood his task of being Optimus Prime's personal servant. Optimus Prime reminded Wing Saber that he was not Prime's property, and Wing Saber seemed to have issues figuring out who he was. Wing Saber eventually faced off with Shockblast again on [[Iron Planet]]. After making sure that his half-dozen buddies were backing him up, he gave the lone Decepticon a thorough trashing and captured him. Oh, brave Wing Saber! Wing Saber returned during the search for the [[Cyber Planet Key]]s, but with a new rebellious, irreverent edge. Having undergone a falling out with Optimus Prime in the brief period between ''Energon'' and ''Cybertron'' involving the life of a stranded astronaut, Wing Saber apparently took off into space. {{storylink|United}} He returned when he encountered the [[Omega Frequency]] wave after the [[Velocitron|Speed Planet]] Key was inserted into the [[Omega Lock]] on [[Earth]]. He approached the Earth at a breakneck speed, blazing like a meteor. Reaching the volcanic island where his comrades were doing battle with the Decepticons, he nailed Megatron with missiles before the Decepticon could fire his Death Machine Gun at Optimus Prime. Jetfire, while not entirely happy to see Wing Saber again, provided him with an Earth vehicle mode, a powerful fighter-bomber. Wing Saber now showed signs of a new, defiant attitude toward his former allies, even to the point of violence. He fired at Hot Shot's feet when the latter questioned him once, but cooled down, with Jetfire explaining to a worried Lori that "That's just how he is." Wing Saber continued to battle Megatron while Optimus Prime and Vector Prime pursued the Lock, and later rescued Vector Prime after Starscream's growth to skyscraper size caused an eruption. Several attempts to take Starscream down were made, all of which failed. After Starscream thwarted one attempt by filling the air between him and the Autobots with chunks of rock, Wing Saber was reminded of the mission in the Chaar asteroid belt. He suggested trying the same trick again, and attempted to link up with Optimus. The attempt failed, but Prime agreed the method from the first attempt to clear the asteroids worked. Wing Saber and Prime flew together through the boulders to reach clear sky, which led to reviving his ability to combine with Optimus Prime to create their Sonic Wing Mode. Wing Saber took the place of Prime's Super Mode backpack,lending his leader his weapons and his powerful jet engines. Cautious. Reliable. Uneager. These are not words to describe '''Cyclonus'''. He is one wild and craaaaaaazy guy. Seriously, he's the guy in the group that even the other Cons think is a little unbalanced. His usual battle tactic is to rush straight in with every piece of artillery he has blazing, all while laughing maniacally. Other times, he yodels while rushing straight in with every piece of artillery he has blazing.

He loves combat, and isn't particularly picky about which side he's on, so long as he gets to shoot things. He's not especially bright, but [[Megatron (Armada)|Megatron]] knows the value of a soldier largely without fear.

He is closely partnered with his comrade [[Demolishor (Armada)|Demolishor]], with whom he sometimes shares a love/hate relationship. He is known for having a maniacal personality and will often fire at targets frantically, risking damage to his own teammates. He has a quirky and sarcastic personality, often leading to harsh punishment by his commander. For some unknown reason, Cyclonus had the habit of falling asleep at random intervals during downtime after battles. He could be the first recorded case of a narcoleptic Decepticon (although not [[Galvatron (BWII)|the first narcoleptic]] in ''Transformers'' full-stop).

Cyclonus served Megatron throughout [[The Unicron Battles]], and was a key player in the united Armada against the [[Unicron|chaos-bringer]]. His alternate form is a helicopter, and he often took pleasure in tormenting the three kids under [[Optimus Prime (Armada)|Optimus Prime's]] protection. He joined the Autobot unit after the demise of Megatron, though with reservations.

As [[Demolishor (Armada)|Demolishor]] prepared for more [[Terrorcon (Energon)|Terrorcon]] assaults on Earth, Cyclonus surfaced, having tucked tail and ran, abandoning the Cybertron City on the moon to be looted of its [[Energon (Energon)|Energon]]. Cyclonus assisted Demolishor and the Autobots until [[Tidal Wave (Armada)|Tidal Wave]] showed up wielding [[Megatron's Sword]], a blade forged by [[Alpha Quintesson]] from the Spark of Megatron. Believing that it was proof of Megatron, Cyclonus abandoned the Autobots and Demolishor, joining Alpha Quintesson's forces.

Cyclonus would once again serve Megatron when the commander was revived within Unicron for some time, before sustaining damages from an [[Autobot]] assault while retreating. Having failed to topple the [[Energon Tower (building)|Energon Towers]], Cyclonus returned injured to his commander, begging for repairs. In a rage, Megatron bound Cyclonus to the wall using [[Unicron]]'s internal tentacles as punishment. One million years later, Cyclonus was present when the Decepticons learned that the Mini-Cons who had fled from Cybertron during the war had ended up on [[Earth]]. {{storylink|Dreamwave Armada issue 3}} He, Demolishor and [[Starscream (Armada)|Starscream]] traveled to the alien planet via [[space bridge]] and assaulted a military base for new [[alternate mode]]s. After complaining about the humans' stench and taking out their communications systems, Cyclonus scanned a helicopter and joined Megatron for some Mini-Con hunting. Cyclonus later helped capture the [[Air Defense Mini-Con Team (Armada)|Air Defense Mini-Con Team]], which led to Megatron getting his hands on the [[Star Saber (Armada)|Star Saber]]. {{storylink|Dreamwave Armada issue 6}} Using this mighty weapon, the Decepticons attacked the Autobots' headquarters. Cyclonus overheard Starscream complaining that Megatron didn't even need his loyal troops now that he had the power of the Star Saber, and told him to stop being so whiny: they were Megatron's eyes and ears, and he would never forget about them! He then fought with the Autobots, lost, and retreated in short order. {{storylink|Dreamwave Armada issue 7}} Some time later at the Decepticons' [[Silver Ridge]] base, Cyclonus went to put the Mini-Cons <s>to bed</s> back in their cells, but found that the little 'bots had run away. When he tried to recall them, he found that they had tampered with the base's internal defenses, turning them against him. Cyclonus, who had forgotten the emergency override code, was promptly imprisoned in the base and blasted by laser turrets. Luckily, the lasers were only set to harm Mini-Cons, so he wasn't too injured to participate in the hunt for the escaped Mini-Cons. The Decepticons followed their Mini-Cons to a [[Mini-Con Ark|structure]] in [[Kansas]], but failed to stop them from entering it and blasting off into space. {{storylink|Dreamwave Armada issue 8}}

The Decepticons found that the Mini-Cons had traveled to the [[Moon (moon)|Moon]], and soon followed them there. After retreating again, Cyclonus decided to pick a fight with a newly arrived Autobot shuttle instead, but this turned out to be a poor decision as the ship heavily outgunned him. {{storylink|Dreamwave Armada issue 11}}

Megatron eventually wrecked the moonbase and captured the [[Destruction Mini-Con Team]] who had built it. However, the Mini-Con trio proved capable of overloading anyone who [[powerlinx]]ed with them, so rather than using them himself, Megatron decided that Cyclonus had volunteered to try them out. He was sent to help [[Thrust (Armada)|Thrust]] retrieve some Mini-Cons in [[Alaska]], but shortly after he took out the [[Adventure Mini-Con Team]], the Destruction Team indeed overloaded him. The Decepticons followed their Mini-Cons to a [[Mini-Con Ark|structure]] in [[Kansas]], but failed to stop them from entering it and blasting off into space. {{storylink|Dreamwave Armada issue 8}}

The Decepticons found that the Mini-Cons had traveled to the [[Moon (moon)|Moon]], and soon followed them there. The flying Decepticons and Megatron attacked the [[Mini-Con Moonbase]], but were driven off by its automated defenses. {{storylink|Dreamwave Armada issue 9}} Cyclonus doubted that the moonbase had any weaknesses at all, but Megatron scoffed at this and fought his way into it using a really big drill. {{storylink|Dreamwave Armada issue 10}} With help from [[Leader-1 (Armada)|Leader-1]], he took control of the base's defenses and ordered Cyclonus to renew his assault... only for Leader-1 to betray the Decepticons and reactivate the defenses. After retreating again, Cyclonus decided to pick a fight with a newly arrived Autobot shuttle instead, but this turned out to be a poor decision as the ship heavily outgunned him. {{storylink|Dreamwave Armada issue 11}}

Megatron eventually wrecked the moonbase and captured the [[Destruction Mini-Con Team]] who had built it. However, the Mini-Con trio proved capable of overloading anyone who [[powerlinx]]ed with them, so rather than using them himself, Megatron decided that Cyclonus had volunteered to try them out. He was sent to help [[Thrust (Armada)|Thrust]] retrieve some Mini-Cons in [[Alaska]], but shortly after he took out the [[Adventure Mini-Con Team]], the Destruction Team indeed overloaded him. Driven mad with power, Cyclonus attacked Thrust in a berserker rage. {{storylink|Fire & Ice}} The Destruction Team's power allowed him to easily defeat his Decepticon comrade, and he even outmatched an entire team of Autobots which arrived shortly afterward. * Broadside has the distinction of having two animated [[Character model|character models]], one based on a prototype toy that apparently went just short of production for some reason, and one based on the actual toy. The prototype design—which could be seen in a European toy catalog, at right—was rendered in animated form only in "[[Carnage in C-Minor]]" and the commercial for the 1986 Triple Changer toys, where it featured a different color scheme that appeared to be derived from the actual finished toy (lacking the prototype toy's blue). The prototype design also appeared in the 1986 [[package art]] mural, and was consistently used for Broadside's [[Marvel Comics]] appearances, colored to resemble the prototype toy, blue and all.

* Broadside made an animated appearance in a television commercial for the Autobot Triple Changers (Sandstorm and himself) and the new Decepticon Triple Changer, [[Octane]]. Created as a counterforce to [[Astrotrain (G1)|Astrotrain]] and [[Blitzwing (G1)|Blitzwing]], both Broadside and Sandstorm were animated transforming from robot to both [[Alternate mode|altmodes]] and back again. Broadside appeared in the character model based on his original prototype in the colors of his final toy.

* According to "[[Carnage in C-Minor]]", Broadside has quite a temper when it comes to his paint job.

* In the Italian adaptation of the characters names, all the three autobot triplechangers featured names of winds. The Italian name of Broadside, however, fit particularly well because is also the name of a [[wikipedia:Mistral_(L9013)|French Navy helicopter carrier]]: "Mistral". This name could also refers to the Grand Prix car [[wikipedia:Maserati_Mistral|Maserati Mistral]], but ''not'' to the Chilean woman poet [[wikipedia:Gabriela_Mistral|Gabriela Mistral]].

* In the Italian dub, Broadside - Mistral speechs imitating the songs of the whales.

* In the American cartoon, plus in both [[Dreamwave Productions|Dreamwave]] and [[IDW Publishing|IDW]] comics, Broadside has been portrayed as a relatively large warrior, likely because one of his altmodes is an aircraft carrier. (In Dreamwave's case, however, he was large only in ''[[The War Within]]'' series and was "normal-sized" in the modern era.)

* Broadside's bio in Dreamwave's ''[[More Than Meets The Eye (G1)|More Than Meets The Eye]]'' attempts to explain his abilty to change into a giant aircraft carrier. Plates, which overlap in his other modes, extend out to cover the mass. As a result, his armor is terribly thin in this mode. It's not like those things need to repel gunfire or anything.

* Oddly, no one ever had a problem with Astrotrain growing into a '''space shuttle'''. Those are kinda big too.
