If even Grimlock gets a Spotlight, what chance then, do we have?

Synopsis
Agent Red and Skywatch scientist Weston discuss activating Grimlock. Red feels the recent extraterrestrial robotic activity is a precursor for an invasion and wants Grimlock under their control to help counter the threat. Weston urges caution, stating that the other robots under their control have gone rogue and fears the same with "Thunder-Lizard 1". Red considers this but gives the orders to begin the process.

Grimlock is zapped with electricity, which activates his memories—one where Optimus Prime lambastes him for insubordination, one where he tells his Dynobots not to mind Prime since their controversial methods work, and one of the battle against Shockwave and their subsequent entombment in lava. With this, Grimlock awakens and breaks his restraints; after a brief skirmish with security, he escapes the facility. Agent Red tells Weston to find out what went wrong and "fix it" so that they can try again with the other "Thunder Lizards". A Skywatch employee named Kloss ducks into a room and calls the Machination, revealing that a planted virus has had the desired effect on Grimlock and that he is "yours for the taking",

As Grimlock makes his way down the streets and through inhabited areas, he wonders what the local humans are, and notes that his vocal processor is damaged and his internal chronometer and sensors are not fully functional. He does, however have a transporter chip he can use to recall him to his ship, the Skyfire, but he assumes it's been destroyed.

Abraham Dante combines with Scorponok and transports to the Lahontan Dam, where Grimlock has arrived. Grimlock takes an aggressive stance, but Scorponok tells him that his Dynobots are dead and that Ultra Magnus has him on the list of wanted Cybertronians. He asks Grimlock to join him in the Machination plot to dominate Earth by running interference and delaying Megatron's plans long enough for the Machination to put their plans into action.

Grimlock considers for a second, but smashes Scorponok in the face. He refuses the offer for two reasons: he could turn Scorponok in to Ultra Magnus for redemption, and as revenge for Scorponok once robbing an installation the Dynobots were guarding. The two do battle and Scorponok quickly gains the upper hand, mostly due to his Headmaster upgrade. To be fair, though, Grimlock's out of ammo.

As Scorponok chokes Grimlock, Grimlock nearly passes out, but remembers having betrayed the Dynobots in their battle with Shockwave, dooming them to a living death. He activates his transporter chip, which remarkably still works, beaming him back to the Skyfire, which is somewhere buried in ice. He hopes he can use the ship to find the other Dynobots, make his peace, and bring the Machination down.

As scientists repair the damage to Dante, he is informed that Skywatch have begun work on the remaining Dynobots. He instructs Kloss to install software that will let Skywatch believe they have control of the robots, while they will be used to dispose of their former leader.
Notes
* The Dynobots' ship is named the Skyfire, a homage to Jetfire's name in the cartoon, and like Skyfire in that continuity, it ends up frozen beneath polar ice.
* Despite a rather purposeful moment commenting on a damaged vocal processor, Grimlock speaks in perfectly normal speech here, as he did in Spotlight: Shockwave.
* Joshua Red bluntly states that, following Devastation, the Transformers are public knowledge. Turns out he didn't clear this with IDW.
* After the story is an IDWords section about The Reign of Starscream.
* Contains the Transformers: Mosaic "Rank".
* Advertisements originally stated that Grimlock and Mirage's Spotlights were "1 of 2" and "2 of 2", respectively, due in March 2008. Due to a delay in Grimlock's, Mirage's was released first (March 5) and Grimlock's was pushed back to 7 weeks later. Amusingly, both the Mirage ad and the "Focus on Decepticons" ad retain their "March 2008" notes. Even the IDWords section features releases for March.
*For the trade paperback Transformers: Spotlight #3, the "strength" typo and the cut word balloon were corrected.

Errors
* The door that Kloss walks through has a hand-scrawled "Control Room" sign on it, with a still-visible artist's note below to "put better font".
* Grimlock's speech balloon, speculating about taking the captive Scorponok back to Cybertron, is incorrectly attributed to Scorponok.
* One of Grimlock's captions typos "strength" as "strenght" (amusingly, it's shortly after he notes damage to his vocal processor).
* As Scorponok boasts about his upgraded speed, his speech balloon is partially cut off at the edge of the page, truncating some words.

Covers (2)
* Cover RI: B&W sketch of cover A.

On present-day Earth, the Autobots take down a thief; long ago on Cybertron, Ratchet discovers a Decepticon scientist.
"Stiletto"
Synopsis
Professor Sumdac has once again been robbed. The Autobots and the police are investigating the scene, when one of the officers reveals to Fanzone the perpetrator is a woman who goes by the alias "Stiletto", a former kick boxer turned industrial saboteur. The professor reveals that the stolen materials were two new prototypes: a new kind of metal alloy and a high-power laser scalpel. Optimus Prime assures Sumdac the Autobots will do all they can to catch the crook, but Fanzone suggests they leave it to the police. After all, she isn't just gonna show up, parading the goods out in the open, now is she?

Meanwhile, out in the open, Stiletto is parading the goods by slicing bridge cables. Prowl shows up, but as Stiletto attacks, she passes right through. The real Prowl throws one of his stars, but she kicks it out of the air and jumps onto an oil tanker. Bumblebee takes a shot, but Stiletto punctures the tanker, and it promptly blows up, with Prowl caught in the blast. Optimus douses the flames, while an ever cranky Ratchet repairs the bridge cable. Meanwhile, Bulkhead charges, but only ends up hitting himself on the head with his own wrecking ball. Bumblebee blocks Stiletto's escape, but she punctures his tires, steals a bike and makes a break for it. The bike is summarily pulled out from under her by Ratchet, and Prime lassos her. She slices free and ATTACKS!...and promptly gets her heels stuck in Optimus' axe. In one last attempt to flee, she slips out of the boots, but Optimus pins her to the bridge using her own heels and leaves her for the police to find. Back at base, the Autobots wonder why she tried to collapse the bridge.

Megatron, watching the news feed, considers this test of the material he plans to use for his new swords a successful field run.
"'Bots of Science"
Synopsis
On the Hydrax Plateau, Ratchet arrives to find dozens of Transformers, both Autobot and Decepticon, dead, killed by a chemical weapon created by the Decepticons that's been nicknamed "Cosmic Rust". Ratchet is horrified, both by the loss of life and by the fact the 'Cons seem so willing to sacrifice their own. He is contacted by his commander, but before he can report, he hears someone calling for a medic. Rushing towards the voice, he realises it is a Decepticon. Despite being ordered to leave him be, Ratchet can't go against what he believes, and begins working on the fallen soldier.

After the examination, he tells the Decepticon he has to lose his leg to save his life, but the 'Con reveals he knows an antidote, and just needs someone with medical training and supplies to help create it. After a few moments of wariness, Ratchet agrees. The 'Con introduces himself as Oil Slick, and they get to work. During the operation, they begin comparing philosophies, and as the formula is finished, Ratchet hopes that maybe someday they can learn a bit more about each other, with out being on opposing sides. He applies the antidote, but Oil Slick suddenly turns on him, infecting him with the rust.

Oil Slick reveals he is the chemical warfare expert who created the rust, and that he considers the loss of a few soldiers worth it in the grand scheme of things. Oil Slick transforms and drives away but not before Ratchet manages to snatch enough of the antidote to not only cure himself but bring back for mass production. As he leaves the plateau, he muses on the little bit of deception he learned from Oil Slick... and whether or not something from the Autobots might rub off on the Decepticons one day.
* In the last panel on page 19, Ratchet's Autobot insignia —which is computer-generated rather than hand-drawn— is correctly aligned with the angle/plane of his chest... but is incorrectly placed, weirdly hovering a couple of centimeters (or real-life meters) in front of his body, just hanging in space in front of his knee.

It was in fact not Liam Shalloo's fault. He just made it more awesome

Items of note
* Among the dead Transformers killed by the Cosmic Rust are a green Decepticon with a body similar to Sentinel Prime, Guzzle, and Generation One Optimus Prime.
* As Ratchet offers the hand of friendship to Oil Slick, a familiar-looking mechanical scorpion with Decepticon symbols on its back looks on.

Continuity notes
* "'Bots of Science" is similar to "The Thrill of the Hunt" insofar as it depicts Ratchet during the Great War having a traumatic, up-close-and-personal encounter with a coolly calculating evil bot. Look, he said he didn't want to talk about it!
* The story depicts Oil Slick breaking off the right half of Ratchet's forehead crest, despite the fact that "Thrill of the Hunt" had already established that it was Lockdown who had been responsible for breaking it. Ratchet has his EMP, which definitively places this story before the flashback events within "Thrill of the Hunt."
*In the episode "TransWarped", Oil slick is shown with a very different body than the one here.

Transformers references
* The term/idea of "cosmic rust" has cropped up a few times, going back to early Generation 1. Cosmic Rust (episode)
