Black repaint is a fan-coined term referring to a mostly dark-colored redeco of a toy, usually featuring black as its primary color. The term is usually inaccurate, as the toys are almost always redecos and not actually repaints, but the name has stuck. They were primarily a product of Japan until Robots in Disguise popularized the concept on American shores.

Black repaints are a comparatively common type of redeco; in particular, a great many Optimus Prime toys have been produced in a black repaint color scheme at least once. As with most aspects of Transformers, fandom opinion on black repaints is split: some like them, some denounce them as bland and/or uncreative, and some don't think of them as being any different from other redecoes.

A black repaint does not necessarily have to literally be mostly black. Armada Nemesis Prime, for instance, is technically dark blue.

Though not exclusive to these kinds of redecos, black repaints are most commonly the standard method of releasing an "evil counterpart" to an existing Transformer. "Stealth mode" versions of characters are somewhat common as well.

Some particularly well-known black repaints include:

* Skywarp could technically be considered the first black repaint in Transformers, though he doesn't match up to the modern notion.

* Soundblaster is the rebuilt form of Soundwave. He has an unusual backstory for a black repaint; he is an upgrade of an existing Decepticon. This reflects his status as one of the earliest black repaints, before the modern conception had taken root in the fandom or the toy manufacturers. BlackZarak would have a similar origin.

*Nightracer, the first convention-exclusive black repaint, is a true repaint of the Go-Bot Bumblebee (G1), lacking his gold paint (making her a depaint?). Like other BotCon exclusives, she would be unrelated to the mold she was based on.

* Black Lio Convoy is the first black repaint to be an evil Autobot clone, in this case of Lio Convoy.

* Robots in Disguise Scourge is one of the few black repaints that represent main show characters. His popularity helped ensure that Hasbro, not just Takara, would be producing many black repaints in the future. Takara still produces the majority of the black repaints.

* The Multiforce were some of the earliest toys where the black repaints represent a stealth mode.

* Alternators Nemesis Prime is infamous for starting out as a nearly unobtainable exclusive surrounded by various problems with Hasbro Toy Shop, then seeing a wide release in Australia.

* Animated Shadow Blade Megatron is cast entirely in black plastic with the exception of his translucent parts. Rare for a Transformers figure, especially one produced by Hasbro.

After millions of Autobots were killed in Megazarak's war of conquest, Defensor became a Matrix bearer and the leader of the few Autobots — the very few — who remained. In fact, there is only one Autobot who remains under his command whose name is known: Ultra Trion. Needless to say, he needs more help. He is now the focal point of Megazarak's obsession to destroy all of the Autobots of his Cybertron.

He has no known relation to the other Defensor involved in the multiversal war.

:Planned as the larger exclusive toy for OTFCC 2004, the Defensor figure was to be a retool of Robots in Disguise Optimus Prime, the central (or smaller) robot being called "Hot Spot" (for obvious reasons). The super mode's head was planned to be retooled, and the colors would have homaged the original Defensor's.

:Sadly, his release was pushed back to OTFCC 2005, which never happened, as 3H Enterprises lost the convention license to Fun Publications.

Completely without mercy or fear, Megazarak is responsible for the near-annihilation of the Autobots in his timestream, including their Optimus Prime. He amassed a small army of loyal followers – among them Caliburn, Sunstorm, Dreadwind and Smokejumper – and tore through Cybertron in a genocidal war unprecedented in this Cybertron's history... and most other Cybertrons, in fact. The surface of the planet is littered with the remains of Autobot and Decepticon alike, but mostly Autobot. He has utterly decimated the planet, leaving only his followers and a tiny handful of straggling Autobot resistance fighters lurking deep within the planet.

Even though Cybertron is effectively his, Megazarak has not relented. He has become obsessed with one prize that has eluded his grasp; the Autobot Matrix, hidden by the slain Matrix-bearer, and left in the care of the "Last Autobot" Defensor.

Megazarak's evil spread beyond even his own dimension. When he killed his reality's Optimus Prime, he left his victim's chassis – and the Matrix within – to corrode on the shores of the Rust Sea. In time, this would become the cloning source for the malevolent Herald of Unicron, Nemesis Prime.
Megazarak and Caliburn delved deep into Cybertron in search of the Oracle, which Megazarak believed would give him the location of Base Sigma, the last pocket of Autobot resistance, and the hiding place of the Matrix. Only the Oracle's ancient caretaker Ultra Trion stood in his way, but not for long.

Megazarak simply batted Ultra Trion aside, but when the guardian continued to attack, Megazarak quickly grew tired of the distraction and obliterated the ancient Autobot. But the Oracle wasn't in its ancient chamber anymore, delaying Megazarak's final victory yet again.Shell Game (3H)
He is a purple, red, black, and electric blue redeco of Armada Megatron, transforming into a Cybertronic tank. He retains almost all of the gimmicks of the retail releases; the electronic lights and sounds were removed for cost concerns.
Notes
* Megazarak was originally conceived as a new form for the original Megatron, as his colors – particularly in robot mode – loosely imply. One potential name was "Chaos Megatron", after the specific color of black used, but Hasbro did not allow 3H to use the character. Thus, he was renamed after the Japanese version of Scorponok.
