Mixmaster

:Mixmaster is a Decepticon Triple Changer from the Revenge of the Fallen franchise in the live-action film continuity family.

A genius chemist, Mixmaster serves as a weapons designer to the Decepticon elite. He has spent his entire lifespan mastering the intricacies of chemical reactions, becoming an expert in poisons, corrosive substances, and most especially explosives. He has a knack for improvisation, being able to make deadly concoctions from just the native materials a world has to offer. A member of the Constructicons, when Devastator is formed he constitutes the lumbering beast's head.

There are three of him, one of which forms the head of Devastator, the other two may or may not be also named "Mixmaster".

In the distant past, the AllSpark Cube created a race of powerful, trans-dimensional beings as the first inhabitants of Cybertron. The Cube gave these beings mighty powers, as well as terraforming their world, but it was not limitless, and gradually became depleted. The first beings learned that the AllSpark's power could be replenished by harvesting the energy of stars, but they were unable to locate new stars to suit their purposes, despite their amazing ability to travel between dimensions. Once again, the Cube came to the rescue, creating a race of workers, who had the ability to change their shape.

The "Mixmaster" body-type was among the very first of these new beings, one of several "builders" who would construct a harvester when a suitable sun had been found. Once built, the device would drain the energy of these stars, thus replenishing the AllSpark. Defiance issue 4

One of the Mixmasters was part of The Fallen's early Decepticons. On Earth, he and his brothers were sicced on the turncoat Jetfire. Mixmaster was the last one standing and managed to get the Seeker in a crushing embrace, informing him "You die". Jetfire got out of this by teleporting into Earth's atmosphere, causing Mix's death by atmosphere re-entry. Tales of the Fallen issue 3

It is presumed that at some point during the civil war on Cybertron, a surviving Mixmaster(s) sided with Megatron, the new protege of the Fallen.

Mixmaster was the leader of the Constructicons on the Nemesis. He grumbled at Soundwave for ordering them to stay in the Longshots cargo hold when they left the damaged Nemesis to pursue the Ark. Convergence chapter 1

After the AllSpark shard was retrieved from NEST's secure bunker at Diego Garcia, Long Haul, Rampage, Mixmaster, Scalpel, Ravage and another, smaller Constructicon secreted themselves aboard the Bayos freighter heading towards the North Atlantic. Once the ship passed over the Laurentian Abyss, the Decepticons jumped overboard and dove down to where Megatron's broken body lay. Scalpel ordered the death of the smallest Constructicon to rebuild Megatron, a request that Mixmaster and the others obliged with. Soon, Megatron was reborn!

After Megatron killed Optimus Prime, Mixmaster climbed the Brooklyn Bridge and knocked down the American flag in a display of dominance.

Some time later, Mixmaster and another Constructicon with the same body-type were present in Egypt during Operation: Firestorm. Mixmaster and several other Constructicons waited in a quarry in their construction vehicle disguises until the humans Seymour Simmons, Leo Spitz and their Autobot guardians Skids and Mudflap approached. The Constructicons combined into the mighty Devastator and attacked.

Elsewhere, the other Mixmaster fought against the NEST forces in the Egyptian town near the great ruins of the pyramids, using his cannon emplacement mode to cause serious problems, until the ex-Decepticon Jetfire arrived to slice him in half and crush his torso, popping his head off and killing him.

Meanwhile, Devastator had shrugged off the Autobot twins and was busy demolishing the Great Pyramid of Giza when Simmons called upon the United States Navy to attack Devastator. The U.S.S. Kidd fired her experimental rail gun, smashing one of his arms to pieces and destroying Devastator. Revenge of the Fallen (film)

Mixmaster was one of the Decepticons dispatched to intercept an evacuation led by Ratchet and a NEST convoy. He led an assault group which was able to destroy the convoy; however, the evacuation had already ended. Since his mission had failed, Mixmaster tried to console himself by killing Ratchet and was able to put him in a critical state before Ironhide arrived and helped him. Mixmaster threw Ratchet away and ordered his troops to attack Ironhide, but the Autobot defeated them. Mixmaster then decided to take care of the situation by himself, but ended up trapped under a platform dropped by Ironhide.

However, this didn't stop him for too long, and he was able to quickly get out and place his remaining soldiers into a scrapyard. The troops were once again defeated by Ironhide and his new weapon sent by Wheeljack. Mixmaster was too confident that the weapon wasn't strong enough to take out his shields, and he attacked with no warning. During the battle, his shields were in fact destroyed by Ironhide's new weapon, turning the tide of the battle towards Ironhide's favor. Ironhide defeated the Decepticon and terminated his opponent, gangland execution-style.
:Mixmaster and the six other Legends class Constructicons combine to form Devastator. In Japan, the Legends class Constructicons were sold individually. Mixmaster has the dubious honor of pulling Devastator's face around like a rectal growth in robot mode. He forms (you guessed it) the head of Devastator.
Voyager Class toys
*Mixmaster (Voyager, 2009)
**Japanese ID number: RD-12
**Accessories: Missile

: Voyager Class Revenge of the Fallen Mixmaster transforms into a gray and silver cement mixer with purple windows and headlights, based loosely on the Mack Granite truck seen in the film. The vehicle mode's mixing drum is incapable of rotating due to the transformation, but does boast a pair of gigantic Decepticon logos on either side. The cement chute at the rear of the vehicle mode can accurately raise and lower on a hinge, and the cannon can be fixed to fire directly overhead or behind at pursuing vehicles.

: His robot mode is designed to be squat with very long arms, but in order to be fully functional and look like the stock photo, his legs at the hip joints must be slightly mistransformed from what is depicted in his instructions. This results in a robot mode that is very thin and lanky, with numerous joints on the extremely long arms alone. The packaging calls out Mech Alive gimmickry in the form of "spinning gears" on his chest, but the feature is only present at the thighs and forearms, which reveal shifting internal bits when the joints are rotated. The robot mode's missile-firing cannon is locked in place on its back pointing straight upward; it can be raised over Mixmaster's head, although this involves letting the cab hang loose on his back as it's designed to attach to the cannon. Alternately the toy can be transformed to its artillery cannon-like Battle Mode that has him essentially performing a belly flop, letting the launcher fire forward. At least, according to the Battle Mode's official depiction on the instructions.

: The instructions and the box pictures show the joint that attaches the cab to the robot to be inverted, with the released toy having the cab joint upside-down as compared with what is in the instructions and box pictures. Out of the box, the toy cannot exactly mimic the battle mode of the instructions or stock photos, but it's close enough for most people to assume they were doing something wrong until one realizes this mis-assembly. The joint can be corrected by the removal and re-attachment of the metal pin behind the front-bumper, but this is not as easy as it sounds and may potentially be damaging to the toy. This only applies to the Hasbro version of the instructions, however, as the Japanese Takara release had instructions depicting a completely different battle mode, which utilised the joint in the direction it is assembled, as well as pegs and holes present on the rear wheel segments and the inside of the cab respectively. Unfortunately, the transformation instructions have since been removed from the Takara website.

: The image of the cement mixer mode on the packaging has been flipped horizontally as well, leaving the location of the ladder switched. Additionally, the robot mode image on the packaging has a different mold for the mixing drum shells, with rectangular-shaped pegs rather than circular.
:Available only in the Toys"R"Us-exclusive "Back Road Brawl" figure pack with Hoist, this release of Mixmaster features a new head that was gang-molded to Mixmaster, but until now went unused. His colour scheme has been extensively redecoed in a layout resembling the Generation 1 Constructicons. He is decorated with a small tampograph reading "Ol' Lefty", a reference to how Generation 1 Mixmaster formed Devastator's left leg.
*Constructicon Devastator (2009)

:The Mixmaster component of the Devastator set becomes Devastator's head. He contains the lights and sounds for Devastator, as well as individual sounds for his vehicle mode. They are motion activated, which means he never, ever shuts up. As with the other Constructicon members in this set, Mixmaster does not have his own robot mode. To activate sounds (if you're willing to do so, that is), press down on a lever on Devastator's chest. Doing so will raise Devastator's mighty head and open his mouth, and cause one of a myriad of sounds to play, including: "I am.... DEVASTATOR!" "CRUSH... AUTOBOTS!" "MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" "I am...DECEPTICON!". In Devastator mode, pressing the button down for a few moments also activates his "vortex grinder". Transforming him back into his own component activates the transformation sound when the face cover is pulled from the underside of his truck mode. After that, he randomly starts making engine stalling noises whenever you look at him funny.
*Constructicon Devastator (2009)
: Mega Power Bots Devastator is a simple toy for younger children, featuring plenty of playing sounds and flashing lights. His limbs have limited swivel articulation and do not detach into separate vehicles. He has a distinctly more humanoid stature than normal.

: Unlike regular Power Bots, and unlike other portrayals of the character in general, Devastator features a transformation! It consists of putting his arms up and laying him flat on his stomach, which lets him roll around using the wheels on his limbs.

: Pressing down the Decepticon shield on his crotch (!) spins the vortex in his chest, lights up his eyes and makes him utter one of many Welker-recorded phrases, including "Prepare for extermination!", "Crush Autobots!" and "I am Devastator!" Pressing on the crane of his excavator arm makes a cannon blast sound effect, while pressing the cab of his loader arm turns the scoop into claws.
Unlike Takara's go at the same idea, Mixmaster and the other Constructicons are mostly just lime green and gray, with the only bits of purple being their windshields. The Mixmaster figure itself appears to be an unchanged version from the Revenge of the Fallen release of the Legends Constructicon Devastator combiner figure, and comes packed with (apparently) similarly unchanged Constructicon Devastator figures of Long Haul, Rampage, a red redeco of Scrapper, who was probably intended to be Scrapmetal, and a metallic green redeco of Voyager class Megatron

Notes
*According to Ben Procter's concept art, Mixmaster originally had a friendly face based on that of actor Brendan Gleeson... and was apparently going to be an Autobot. The early head design was actually put to use in the Generation 1 Mixmaster-themed redeco store exclusive, as well as the Legends Mixmaster.

*Not unlike Bonecrusher in the first movie, Revenge of the Fallen sees Mixmaster (and indeed, quite a lot of other Decepticons) emit some heavily-processed, garbled Cybertronian noise that could maybe pass for English dialogue if you cup your ear and turn your head sideways. The difference is that the DVD subtitles actually interpret the roar he lets out before transforming to battle mode as the sentence fragment "Listen up..." Unlike Bonecrusher, however, no voice actor is listed in the end credits.

*Though the green Mixmaster was a Toy'R Us exclusive, he was featured as a co-sell on exclusive products sent to competing stores (notably the Super Tuner Showdown, exclusive to Walmart)

*There are evidently two or three Mixmasters. One forms Devastator's head, another was killed by Jetfire, and the one in the Dark of the Moon video game for PS3 and XBOX 360 could be the same one that formed Devastator's head, or possibly another one.
Foreign names
*Japanese: Mixmaster (ミックスマスター Mikkusumasutā)
Synopsis
The Decepticons approach an asteroid belt in deep space, searching for a material known as isodrite. As Galvatron rants about crushing his enemies and everyone else, Ratbat finds an isodrite deposit — already being mined by the Autobots. A battle ensues, during which Galvatron spends nearly as much time bashing his own troops aside as he does firing at the Autobots. With his "help", the bemused Autobots make a clean escape aboard Sky Lynx.

Back on Chaar, Motormaster and Swindle have words with Cyclonus: either do something about Galvatron's madness, or face rebellion. A holographic image of a Quintesson appears to Cyclonus, and advises him that there are planets which specialize in repairing damaged minds, such as Torkulon. Not knowing what else to do, Cyclonus considers the idea, while the Quintessons gloat among themselves that shortly they will have several less Transformers to deal with — including the "most dangerously unpredictable of them all."

Cyclonus lies to Galvatron, informing him that the Autobots are resting on Torkulon after their most recent skirmish; the deranged leader eagerly takes the bait, flying to the planet with Cyclonus and the Sweeps. Upon landing, Galvatron threatens several alien flesh creatures, demanding that they hand over Ultra Magnus. The intelligent Torkuli arrive shortly; when Galvatron predictably refuses their orders for non-violence, they restrain him. Galvatron quickly realizes Cyclonus has deceived him. Galvatron is carried away to begin his therapy, while Cyclonus fills out a small ream of paperwork.

As the therapy proceeds, Scourge has his doubts — "This is stupid! Let's get him out of here!" Cyclonus says to at least give it a chance. The Torkuli are unsuccessful in getting Galvatron to talk about his problems, and even less successful when they have him put together external objects to repair his damaged psyche: Galvatron builds himself a blaster and tries to escape. Finally they attempt "exo-drama" where patients act out their problems but a bouncing alien screaming at Galvatron finally causes him to snap further, shouting back that "I'll give you something to scream about!!" Galvatron becomes immune to the electromagnetic restraints of the Torkuli; they throw everything they have at him, restraining him for their last resort — the Alya solution.

The chief therapist reveals that Torkulon itself is a living planet, and can manifest itself in the form of insectoid creatures that consume the damaged portions of those who cannot be helped, in effect lobotomizing the planet's victims and leaving them mindless. Cyclonus protests and demands Galvatron's release, but he and Scourge are also restrained by the Torkuli.

The Alya begin to feed on Galvatron who continues to resist: "You have no right to change what I am!" The Torkuli doctor informs him "You've already been changed; that's the problem." Cyclonus can barely watch as his leader's mind is invaded by Torkulon — but something goes wrong. The madness of Galvatron proves to be too strong for the living planet, causing it to malfunction. In the chaos, Galvatron, Scourge and Cyclonus are released from the planet's grasp. After taking a few shots at Cyclonus for getting him in this mess, Galvatron fights to the center of the planet, having seen into its mind while it was inside his. The planet fears Galvatron's madness and destructive potential and attempts to restrain him, but Galvatron powers his way through to its living-computer core. Several cannon mode blasts render the entire planet inoperable. Galvatron informs Cyclonus he will now destroy whatever is left, and warns Cyclonus against stopping him.

After the planet is reduced to smoke and rubble, Galvatron gloats over the beauty of "devastation wrought with precision and care," seemingly just a little more sane... until Cyclonus informs Galvatron that it will take the Torkuli centuries to rebuild. Galvatron decides his work isn't done if it's going to take "only centuries", but a weary Cyclonus suggests that the Autobots might be a more pressing concern. Galvatron smiles at the prospect of killing Ultra Magnus; the Decepticons flee the planet, leaving the Torkuli at the mercy of their former insane patients.

Notes
Animation or technical glitches
* Soundwave is missing all his yellow stripes as he looms up to eject Ratbat.
* Ratbat is given a high-pitched series of squeaks as he ejects...and another, lower-pitched caw at the same time, layered on top of the squeaks.
* Perhaps the script called for Galvatron's forehead to blaze with energies, as it's been seen to do on occasion. Instead, two random spots on his temples are animated lighting up like console buttons.
* As Ratbat flaps over the horizon, his wings are layered behind the planet's limb instead of above it.
*Soundwave's only line in this episode once again lacks the trademark harmonics processed by Scott Brownlee, meaning it once again sounds like Dr. Claw. This marks the fourth time it is known to have happened.
* As he speaks that line, he's missing his yellow stripes again.
*The laser blasts' colors in this episode are...odd. When the Decepticons attack the Autobots on the asteroid, their blasts are yellow (usually an Autobot blast color), orange and red. Perceptor fires a blue laser blast at Galvatron, who fires blue lasers back at him! This is a trademark element seen in the G.I. Joe cartoon, which is animated by the same company: The Joes' kid-friendly lasers are red while Cobra has blue kid-friendly lasers.
* After the Sweeps miss colliding with Springer, Sky Lynx is back on the ground and takes off a second time. He rather oddly leaves his lower half just standing there, rather than converting to lynx form. When he lands at the battle's end, he's once again combined with his lower portion.
* Scourge and his accompanying Sweeps are at least partially animated based on their older, "incorrect" character models. Their heads are visible in their vehicle modes:
** when Sky Lynx grabs one of them in his claws.
** when they transform to leave Torkulon.
* Just before Galvatron jumps him, Magnus's shoulder superstructure is blue instead of white.
* Magnus has a white missile as he grapples with Galvatron.
* The last time he grapples with Galvatron, the top of Magnus's back is red instead of grey.
* Galvatron's gun mode is mostly purple instead of its usual gray as Sludge bashes him aside.
* As the Autobots flee, Swindle can be seen among the damaged Sweeps, despite not being seen approaching the asteroid.
* In the wide shot of Cyclonus and company walking, they are sliding across the screen far more rapidly than the speed of their walk.
* Cyclonus's gun is white instead of gray as he points it at Swindle.
* Roger C. Carmel's inconsistency with the voice of Cyclonus starts to affect Motormaster. In this episode and "The Ultimate Weapon" (Motormaster's last speaking role in the series) his voice for Motormaster sounds weaker than before. The voice lacks most of its usual heavy flanging.
* In the second wide shot of Cyclonus speaking with the Quintesson, he's not quite standing flat on the ground.
* In the closeup of the Quintesson hologram, his mouth isn't animated as he speaks.
* Soundwave is missing his stripes and insignia as he watches Galvatron being repaired.
* Galvatron has a "goatee" in most shots, but is "clean-shaven" in others (his chin is sometimes dark grey, sometimes just grey).
* As Galvatron struggles against the inhibitor blast, the Sweeps behind him are set too low on the landscape, making them look like they only come up to Galvatron's knees.
* In the shot before Galvatron is sent to Advanced Treatment, the rectangle on Cyclonus's chest isn't colored orange. In the shot after, the "eyes" on his Decepticon symbol are colored in (purple) instead of blue.
* As he vows to destroy the planet, then the Autobots, Galvatron's shoulder pieces are dark grey. In the next shot, they're back to having light grey tops with red squares. A few shots later (as he shoots the gun he built), the red squares are missing.
* After he's immobilized on the arena floor, a few shots show Galvatron floating in mid-air above the steps.
* During the Torkuli's line, "That's why your friend brought you here," the rectangle on Cyclonus's chest is yellow instead of orange. A few shots later (just before the commercial break), it's not colored in at all.
* An odd edit cuts off the head therapist: "We cannot allow you to interfere. Besides."
* As he yells, "Free me!" a closeup shows outer space behind Galvatron's face instead of the ground (or the purple webbing that surrounds him).
* As he says, "He'll be nothing at all!" Cyclonus's eyebrows are white instead of grey.
* While Galvatron is being lobotimized, while begging Cyclonus to help him, he's completely light grey, missing the purple of his armour entirely.
* Cyclonus's eyes are black instead of red as he observes that the planet has become infected with Galvatron's madness.
* The Sweep that transforms after the planetary overload is inexplicably given an energy glow as he does so.
* In a closeup shot, Galvatron has two ragged holes in his forehead, but they're not seen in any other view.
* The white rectangle near Galvatron's elbow flashes between white and purple as he struggles with the web stuff in mid-air.
* Glavatron's emblem is missing just before he leaps into the crevasse.
* When Cyclonus says "He IS crazy," part of the Autobot symbol is on his chest.
* As he picks up the last Torkulon, the red squares on Galvatron's shoulders are missing.

Continuity errors
* Despite appearing in the group approaching the asteroid, Soundwave promptly disappears and doesn't play any part in the following battle.
* Galvatron is grappling with Magnus when the Sweep offers to help; when he bashes the Sweep aside in the very next shot, Magnus is nowhere to be seen.
* A wide shot shows Galvatron, Cyclonus, and three Sweeps arriving on Torqulon. The rest of the episode shows only two Sweeps, however.
* The mutiny that Laserbeak, Swindle and Motormaster claim will happen, never does.

Continuity notes
* Some allusion is made to Galvatron's former life as Megatron. While the Torkulons attempt to lobotomize the Decepticon leader, he states that they have "no right" to change what he is, to which the Torkulon doctor replies, "You have already been changed, that's the problem." On the other hand, this could also be taken to mean the change away from his saner personality from the movie. Speaking of which...
* The Torkuli diagnose Galvatron's madness as being caused by a plasma accident, presumably his plasma bath in "Five Faces of Darkness".
* This is the final appearance of Laserbeak in the (US) Generation 1 cartoon continuity, and one of only two appearances in Season 3 (the first was a brief cameo in "The Five Faces of Darkness, Part 5"). No, he doesn't perch on Galvatron's shoulder.

Real-world references
* A classic Looney Tunes sound effect (used for the Road Runner) shows up as the Decepticons fly across the title screen.
* Star Wars sound effects:
** Millennium Falcon engine burst: when Sky Lynx launches at the start of the battle; when he launches a second time during the battle; when he launches a third time to leave the battle; when Laserbeak flies off with Motormaster and Swindle; as Galvatron takes off to destroy the planetary core
** X-Wing diving whine: as Cyclonus follows Galvatron toward the core.

* Large portions of the episode, especially the therapy sessions, seem to parody real psychological treatment methods such as word association and dramatherapy. The intentions of the Alya to consume Galvatron's mind could also be taken as a reference to a lobotomy, a process that can "cure" certain mental illnesses but removes significant parts of the patient's personality.

Trivia
* This is by far the most Decepticon-centric episode of the series; the Autobots are only onscreen for part of the first act.
* Twice in this episode (when Cyclonus takes him to Torkulon to look for the Autobots, and when leaving the planet in search of the Autobots), Galvatron says "Ultra Magnus", as if Magnus is the leader of the Autobots.
As Jack was pretending to ride a parked motorcycle and talking to it about how he would like to own it, Sierra and a friend caught him in the act and mocked him for talking to what she thought was his motorcycle. Flustered, Jack tried to explain away his embarrassment while also flirting with her. When two cars, seeking out the motorcycle, appeared and threatened to run them over, Sierra and her friend fled. Darkness Rising, Part 1

Another day after school, she tried to take Jack up on his offer of a bike ride. They were interrupted by Vince, who challenged Jack to a race. Sierra and her friend accompanied them to a road outside town where they held a race, and Jack easily won. Sierra and her friend spread word around school, and she later told Jack she was impressed with his racing skills. Jack subsequently felt compelled to accept Vince's second racing challenge: Take part in an illegal street race. Sierra acted as starter and waved to Jack before the cars blasted off. The next day, she again asked Jack if he'd give her a ride. At first he turned her down, but changed his mind a short time later, and they whizzed through the streets of Jasper. Speed Metal

At some point, Sierra left a message on Jack's social network page about his race with Vince. Crisscross
